Michael had seen it happen many times since coming to Morizia, and as the boy wandered the lands looking for painting materials - A grace allowed by his nobleman patron - He saw a party of Calarian slavers, bringing with them several members of the Company of the Forsaken, marching towards the town he was staying in to do just that. As he watched from the window, he can see the heavily armed mercenaries troop to the town square, before one of them yelled in a magically amplified voice (Oath Magic worked wonders when one already wanted to speak) to make his demands.

"Hear Ye, Hear Ye!" he shouted, "By the authority of the King of Morizia under the protection of the Most Serene Republics of Calaria, all men, women, and children in the town, be they local inhabitant, visitor, or traveler are to gather in the town square to answer charges of harboring rebels and subversives! Failure to comply will result in this town being put under the Royal Ban and punished forthwith!" This mercenary then brought out a torch, "You have fifteen minutes to come out of your homes or else face immediate judgment as rebels against your King!"

Michael - No, Michal Czeslaw Aleksandrowicz - fumed. This was all a pretext to gather people together for easier capture and enslavement rather than risk them fleeing. Not merely that, but it also made sure that any would-be 'heroes' had to fight in the open, without the advantage of the terrain, and could be more closely identified if they survived the encounter.

Nevertheless, as he went out, wearing his fine clothes, he knew that his connections to his nobleman patron would spare him the dark fate of slavery... But his patron won't like it if he slaughtered an entire company of mercenaries and revealed his powers. But if they endangered him somehow, well, he could justify it. But for now, although these people weren't the Black Band, he'd paint the streets with their blood, one way or another.

The mercenaries wouldn't go as far as to threaten the locals with royal authority directly. They'd claim that they're working for the king, but any threats or other such things would be made under their authority.

Depends on the direction they'd be coming from. If they're coming on the main road and wish to meet with the paladins it's unlikely that they would have found any.

If they're coming from a different direction it might be possible, but you have given no indication that they're aware of how to fight and kill undead to begin with.

They're coming from the Merckburger Fen, which is on the Anselmnian Border. To be honest, my original idea was for them to encounter the border guards patrolling against 'infiltrators from Anselm, present their documents and papers saying they're crossing over legally, and then hear about the undead plague from them. Is that possible?

Edit: As for how they know how to fight and kill undead, aren't there legends saying that Fire and White Magic can kill them?
