[SUBMITTED] Class in Ethics

Postby Jutsa » Fri Oct 09, 2020 10:17 am

So, I'm still not entirely sure this constitutes a national issue, but I figured I'd write it up anyway. :P
It's a bit morbid, and might be a bit too on-the-nose, but hoooopefully it works alright?
And, I admit, it wasn't particularly easy for me to come up with either a good humor or good effect lines for this one, so suggestions are all welcome.

Title: Class in Ethics
The Issue: The organization of People for the Ethical Treatment of Everything, branch: Mammalian Omni-Saving Services, has often been the spotlight of controversy. However, an official transparency report for this year has just been released, and has detailed that nearly the entirety of the animals it routinely takes in are euthanized.
Validity: All

Option 1: "How could PETE do this!" cries Peter Griffith, an ex-PETE and ardent animal rights activist in favor of freeing all animals from all captivity ever. "Their corrupt rulership has turned this peace-loving congregation into one of death and hatred! And they're bringing shame to animal rights everywhere. I certainly don't treat my dog that way. You need to ban 'shelters' like these outright! No more killing, no more overcrowding — let these animals be free!"
[effect] it is considered unethical to squash cockroaches

Option 2: "Lets not get all moral justice warrior, here," cautions Pete Chia from the Organization of Servicing Organic Development. "I'm not going to judge their methods; the problem is that they're still officially recognized as an animal shelter. Officially reclassify them as a slaughterhouse and treat them as such, and fine them for any misleading campaigns that don't explicitly state themselves as such."
[effect] hospice clinics have been reclassified as death beds

Option 3: "See, even Pete knows what PETE does is out of mercy, for Pete sake," says @@RANDOMFIRSTNAME@@ Peterson, looking particularly petered out from having to wade through outraged reporters to get into your office. "We only euthanize animals to put them out of their misery, which you can hardly call inhumane. Of course, it'd be easier to achieve our goal if we could legally fudge the numbers on our reports. Oh, while I'm here, if you could give us a sizable grant and a public recommendation..."
[effect] debates and public announcements are interrupted with sleazy ads sponsoring depopulation

Validity: Capitalist
Option 4a: "What I don't like is how inefficient this is," croaks a dangerous looking man wielding a meat cleaver and a T-Shirt reading "No, This is Patrick". "Think of all the money that could be made if we sell their organs to vets and leftover meat to consumers! Of course, you'd need to adjust a few consumer and selling laws to make it happen, but surely you'd be willing to do that in the name of free market capitalism?"
[effect] feral @@ANIMALPLURAL@@ are domesticated to meet market demand

Validity: Socialist
Option 4b: "What I don't like is how inefficient this is," croaks a dangerous looking man wielding a meat cleaver and a T-Shirt reading "No, This is Patrick". "Think of all the money that we could make if the government ran this organization! We could supply organs to vets and sell the leftover meat to our hard-working proletariat! With a few regulatory laws adjusted and workers reallocated, we could be the envy of socialists everywhere!"

Title: Class in Ethics
The Issue: The organization of People for the Ethical Treatment of Everything, branch: Mammalian Omni-Saving Services, has often been the spotlight of controversy, ranging from sexualized ads to bizarre protests at meat sections in supermarkets. However, perhaps their most notorious strategy is their universal shelter, which accepts animals of all kinds. Their report for this year has just been released, and has detailed that nearly the entirety of the animals it routinely takes in are euthanized.

Adjusted it a little. Frankly, I still think it could be peppered with a bit more amusement,
but at least the description isn't a total grammatical fart.

Course, I'd kinda like some opinions as to whether or not this even seems like a big enough issue to be a national one. To me it feels like it'd work for NS,
but I wouldn't mind a second or third opinion.

I think the premise could certainly function as a national issue. While the writing could definitely be cleaned up a bit here and there, I think the execution is quite good. My only real comment is that maybe you could make it more clear what the exact problem is: is PETE creating shelters with the express goal of killing animals, or is it just an unfortunate side effect of overcrowding? In which case, maybe the PETE speaker could ask for funding explicitly to build more shelters?

Also, a really minor thing:

Their corrupt rulership has turned this peace-loving congregation into one of death and hatred!

Maybe say "leadership" instead?

All good suggestions. You can also tell that I've played too much Nationstates @rulership xD

Glad you like it. :)

Right - forgot about this one. Bumping this, but I'll probably keep it up for a while.
I've got at least a few others that I said I'd work on and haven't yet, so I'll wait to bump those until I've actually done something.

They have a shelter for all types of animals? Does that include cockroaches? I think that would add a funny angle

Alrighty, tweaked a couple of effect lines. Mainly I scrapped Option 1's; definitely, cockroaches, while kind-of not pertinent to the issue at large, work wonders for an effect line. Thank you, Aussie! :)

Option 4(a/b)'s effect line's fairly amusing in its context, but for the casual observer, it's just kind of there... so I'm open for suggestions. :P

This feels very unfocused to me, jumping from one topic to another. I'd suggest picking ONE thing that they're doing, and making the issue about that. PETA's euthanasia rate would definitely make for a good issue, so I'd make the whole issue about that.

Agreed. :)

Updated; slashed options, communized option 5 a bit, removed validity checks, plugged in a couple of debatably fitting references, and honed on the description.

Only took a couple of months this time. :)

Gonna just gently bump this. Ed: I realized that "Pete Moss" was already used in the opening, so having a guy named Pete Moss was kind of using the same joke twice,
so instead his name is Pete Chia. :)

My, this place looks a little dusty, doesn't it? :)

I believe I'll be submitting this soon, unless there are any major objections.

This thing’s been poking about the thread for over a year! Submit it, dear God, I beg you. :p

If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.

Hey, just because it's been a year doesn't mean it's ready to submit; if anything it means I've just not been taking enough care of it. :P

But seriously, I will go ahead and submit this unless there're any other major suggestions. I have like four other drafts on-forum I have to take a bit more care of first,
and then I have... oh, maybe a dozen written drafts to work on after that. Too bad I'm just not as into GI atm *shrug* (not to mention I'm still putting off my NS RP and college is starting up again this week.)
