The Eagle's Club is proud to present Eagles Cup, a modern era re-incarnation of the historic Eagle's Cup. 16 esteemed nations from throughout the multiverse will compete over 9 Matchdays to lift the Eagle's Cup and earn their place in the Eagle's Club, securing their place as a competitor and potential host in future Eagle's Cups.

Format :: The 16 nations will be split into two 8-team sub-competitions. Each competition will have two groups where 4 teams will play each other nation twice, once at a stadium of their choosing and once at a stadium of their opponents choosing. The first sub-competition is the Cocoa-bo Challenge Trophy which traces direct lineage to the original Eagle's Cup including the representatives from the Eagle's Club and At-Large entrants. The second sub-competition is strictly invite only, tracing a direct lineage to the Cup of Champions and representing only Major, WCC & Confederation Champions. From there, the top 2 nations in each group table will advance to the Semi-Final round of each half to be held at an official Eagle's Club location. The winners of these matches will receive a special trophy from the Eagle's Club that also grants the nations honorary status with the Eagle's Club for one competition cycle and advance to the Final of their half. The winners of the Eagle's Club Half and Champions Half will advance to the Eagle's Cup Championship match presented by Cocoa-bo where the winner will be crowned overall champion and granted entry into the Eagle's Club. A third place playoff will also be contested back at the Eagle's Club where medals for the Top Three finishers in the overall will be awarded.

Venues:
Group stage matches are standard Home & Away fixtures
Knockout Round Matches shall be played at an official Eagle's Club location with preference to the Eagle's Club facility of the highest Seed unless no suitable Venue is available
The Final for the Cocoa-bo Challenge Trophy shall be contested at the Eagle's Club in Eelandii, Turori
The Final for the Cup of Champions shall be contested at the Eagle's Club in Dodoma, Banija
The Final match of the competition shall be the Eagle's Cup Bronze Medal match to be contested at The Eagles Club where all medals will be awarded in a final ceremony.

Transportation support for teams competing in the Eagle's Cup is available through the multinational Logistics and Holdings Company CoCoCo. Cocoa-bo, a primary holding of CoCoCo which heavily leverages the CoCoCo Logistics infrastructure has been signed as the presenting sponsor of the tournament and will have traveling Cocoa-bo booths at all tournament venues.

Eligible Participants :: The bylaws of the Eagle's Club denote guaranteed entry for up to 8 Nations into the Eagle's Cup as follows:

Eagle's Club Members - Minimum 4 entrants into the Eagle's Cup via the Cocoa-bo Challenge Trophy
Eagle's Cup Semi-Finalist - Maximum 3 Entrants into the Eagle's Cup via the Cocoa-bo Challenge Trophy
Non-Member Applicant - Minimum 1 Entrant into the Eagle's Cup via the Cocoa-bo Challenge Trophy

Should the Eagle's Club contain fewer than 4 active member nations then the Eagle's Club allocation to the Cup shall be reduced accordingly. The Eagle's Club shall fill these slots with Non-Member nations by means of Selection, Invitation or Application as necessary to fill the field.

Should the previous cycles Eagle's Cup semi-finalists include Eagle's Club members, or, should any of the previous cycles Eagle's Cup Semi-Finalists fail to send a delegation to the Eagle's Cup, the Eagle's Cup Semi-Finalist's allocation to the Cup shall be reduced accordingly. The Eagle's Club shall fill these slots with Non-Member nations by means of Selection, Invitation or Application as necessary to fill the field.

Per established precedent, entry for up to 4 Nations each into the Champions and Confederations Groups may be earned earned via triumph in recently contested World Cup Committee and Regionally sanctioned Championships with replacement nations to be selected at the discretion of the Eagle's Club Committee.

Eagle's Club :: The eligibility of Eagle's Club members Eauz, Kingsford and Cosumar are currently in an inactive status. As the once independent nation of Bedistan is now part of the Unified Capitalizt States, the Eagle's Club membership and reserved place in the Eagle's Cup is extended to the Unified Capitalizt States. Temporary Eagle's Club status may also be granted to select non-champion nations based on their final position in the previous Eagle's Cup competition.

Applicant :: At least 1 Additional slot in the Eagle's Cup is available to a nation selected by the Eagle's Club who has submitted an application to the Eagles Club. Additional slots may be made available to non-member applicants if selected delegations are unable to participate. As Invitations are sent out, and delegations formed, all participants will be informed.

The Eagle's Cup is unique in the fact that these semifinals double as miniature Cup Finals. So let's focus on those very fans. What is the fan culture around your national team? Are they violent? Are they political? Do they welcome visiting fans as they enter your country? Will Banijan police groan as your fans descend upon their city for the semifinal? Tell us everything there is to know about soccer fans, both national team and club(if you want), in your nation. Graphic Bonus: Any sort of banners or instruments fans in your nation would carry/play into the stands or on a march to the match.

Final Prompt: Winning. If you've made it this far, you know that you're good at winning. Your squad is competing for a trophy in these semifinals, and if you make the Final, you will have a trophy in hand as you go to collect your second- the Eagle's Cup. But as is true with all Finals, nerves are at a fevered pitch. What do your fans and players do to calm their nerves before a tournament Final? And if they win, what will the celebrations look like? Cocoa-bo, an establishment taking its name directly from the beloved national animal of Turori, started as a small dessert shop in Kionao. However, it was only after they added chocolate topped drinks to their menu that their popularity started to soar. Often referred to by the nicknames Agave-Blues on account of their kit or Los Pitxileros [Transl. The Footballers], the Tequilo national team set-up approaches it's fourth cycle of the World Cup with some moderately impressive showings at all age groups, and finally, some real honours on the board following coach Juan Manuel Botín's Independent Associations Championship win. That eclipses third-placed finishes in Baptism of Fire 72 and runners-up at the last under-18 World Cup as the pinnacle of achievements so far. The feeling before the last IAC was that it may be time to start delivering on early promise for fear of settling in the bracket of good-ish, but not great or even simply never quite good enough - something most Tequiloa, a very relaxed kind of people, would be perfectly happy with but the Tequiloan FA, the Unión, having made such a fuss over the last few years and publishing so much about their great plans for world dominance, could not settle for, politically speaking. Fortunately, coach Juan Manuel seems to have set the national team on an acceptably competitive path... so far.

A Brief History of Los Pitxileros

Team Director: Ooóoos Skeuri (AUD), 59;
Former star defender at Tenth Star Hasiera, KT Moreazerua and Raynor City United and 3-cap Audioslavia international, Ooóoos had a successful post-football career in mask-making whilst unknowingly rising to god-like status in Tequilo without even visiting the country. Many still don't believe the real Ooóoos Skeuri is even still alive, rather preferring that he is a wight in the Shambolic Pantheon, and the Man In The Mask at the Unión is an imposter.

Assistant Director: August Toset (JUV), age unknown;
Won a Cup of Harmony as the first manager of the Juvencus national team and took the nation to a second final as runner-up. Employed to further develop the Unión's plan to create multiversally-dominating pitxi tactics, and given temporary charge as head coach for the last Cup of Harmony to see if he could emulate his success with his home nation. He couldn't: Los Pitxileros bowed out at the round of 32 for the third tournament in a row.

Head Coach: Juan Manuel Botín, 40;
Ex-player for Motozintla, learned his coaching trade with former national team coaches Isaac Martí (resigned) and Luka Entenza (retired through ill-health), apparently destined for moderately good things. Coached the under-18 national team to 3rd and 2nd place finishes in the youth world cup, a NT reserve group to the last Mike Sarzo Memorial Trophy, and capped this with the title at the last IAC. He now formally succeeds August Toset as the NT seniors head coach, and begins with a brief to 'give a good showing' in the Eagles Cup.

Assistant Head Coach: Genaro Rodis, 51;
Former assistant to Ramiro Paredo at SC Pedregal and then with the national team, a quiet man who was instrumental in developing and bringing through so many young talents for club and country. Whilst Paredo's time as national team coach was not deemed a success, in fact something of a failure, Genaro is well liked by senior players, and has been instrumental in securing a place in this squad for some of the younger talents.

Coach: Haize Apeiztegui, 36;
A professor of the game and brilliant defender coming to the last of his playing days at Unuiĝinta, recently retired from playing for the national team as a supporter’s favourite, and one of Tequilo’s most-capped players (60 caps, 4th on the all time list). Temporarily assistant to Juan Manuel with the under-23s at the last IAC, he has landed a full coaching role permanently after such success in that tournament.

Team Captain: Vilca Hualla, ML, 25
Vilca Hualla succeeded legend and first capitan of the national team Mateo Tafalla for the previous World Cup cycle after Mateo retired from international football. Though it was not a happy cycle overall for the team, with disappointing results on the field and controversy off it, this was no reflection on the stewardship of the young, talented captain. Two consecutive record transfer moves to top multiversal clubs in KT Itzalovalle (AUD) and most recently FC Mar Sara (VAL) have underlined his quality.

Vice Captain: Oscar Bienvenida, GK, 22;
Recently completed a record-breaking run of consecutive caps for his country, starting 30 games in a row for Los Pitxileros, holds the current record for most caps (82) and the records for most clean sheets (24) and consecutive clean sheets (4) for the national team. The young goalkeeper still has years ahead of him but is already a mature and experienced figure around the national camp. Also captains his club team, Motozintla, where he signed for a then record domestic transfer fee of ₸3.75m from Tumuloa Xico, and he still holds the record transfer as the most expensive goalkeeper in Tequilo.

PLAYING STAFF

New head coach Juan Manuel Botín will follow up success in the IAC by taking this tournament as another opportunity to shape his future thinking for the next World Cup campaign, and his squad is notable for who has been left out as much as who gets the call. It appears he has looked back at the last poor campaign and quietly lumped the blame for a poor cyle on the defence as much as anyone, dropping regular rightback pair Eolo Sorazar and Huachalla, leftbacks Llösë Lea and Blêxu, and centre half Antton Machinena for his first official full senior squad. Experienced favourite Huracan and durable utility defender Noxochinoch are the only defensive picks from previous campaigns who didn't come through the junior sides with Juan Manuel, as he puts his faith in the new batch of dynamic defenders that he has been working with for some years at the intermediary age groups - Ostando Bertendona, José Tavia, Tol Chicote, Emmanuel París, Diogo Junco and Ochoa Abril. The rest of the starting XI will be familiar to followers of Los Pitxileros, although he has dropped Ecuador from the forwards selection in favour of Pedro Rôa who impressed so much in the IAC tournament. There is only one potential debutant in the squad as highly-touted young leftback Sanço gets a chance to impress and work his way into the coach's thinking for the World Cup. Milan Lucio and Tsttnauayu are perhaps surpirse call-ups at this stage, but then again, they too are 'Juan Manuel's Men' - both appearing in his debut under-18 squad four years ago when the Pitxileros Juniors reached the semi-final and won a third-placed bronze medal.

The national stadium, the jewel in the crown of Tequilo's 'Football City' development centre of El Unión (that's the national FA to you and me), opens it's turnstiles for the first time with three 'test matches' against the confederation champions of Ao, Rushmore and Esportiva as part of Tequilo's debut in the Eagles Cup. Built over the top of the former 'character' suburb of Quezaldad on the outskirts of the capital city Tapalupé, it had become a complete white elephant as the Unión failed to progress from demolishing a residential zone of some 300,000 people into building the dream centre. After eight years of ruin, new Unión project manager Carolina Ruiz got the whole thing erected inside twelve months and was subsequently voted Unión President for Life.

The headquarters of the Unión, presently located in the Museo de Pitxi in the Socrates district, will be moving to state of the art facilities in the Ciudad, which includes the national stadium; a second stadium, the Estadio Juvenil with a capacity of 32,300 to host secondary games including the national amateur People's Cup Final, youth internationals and most likely future internationals within hosted tournaments; the national physiotherapy centre; the Escuela Nacional de Pitxi or national football school to help development of Tequilo's youth players; and the commercial headquarters of several sports-related companies including sportswear manufacturers Natty kit., sports data company XK-OpTeq, Bonesea sports publisher BoldSport and their Tequiloan imprint GOLa (trading as GOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLa!!!), and multiversal scouting group KickAdviser™. It is also expected the famous Museo de Pitxi will eventually move there, or at least open a second facility in 'Football City'.

To increase revenue, both stadiums have taken on domestic tenant teams with Fábrica Tapalupé, the state of Ocotapa's most successful team with 19 state championships, enthusiastically moving into the national stadium, thus succeeding Real Gardaresso as the domestic team with the largest stadium - by ten seats. Meanwhile Galaxía, without a proper home these last nine years since the demolition of Quezaldad and their ramshackle Domo Galaxía stadium, will be delighted to upgrade as tenants of the Estadio Juvenil.

The average Tequiloan has an exceedingly high SQ (shambolic quotient) meaning they are really very good at creating and thriving in chaos… they generally get things done in a very roundabout and often nonsensical way, usually with an unbelievably high portion of luck (either good or bad). They are happy to lose, and prefer it in chaotic fashion - it's all about the journey, not the result. 0-7 is much more interesting than 0-1. Apparently.

For the purpose of media marketing, the PR company attached to the UPT has decided the national team will take the nickname Los Pitxileros - the imaginative epithet translates as ’The Footballers’ - although the press and fans mostly prefer to use ’the agave-blues’ on account of their shirt colour.

Kang Guilin remains the NT head coach but has been given this tournament off, with Bjarnveig Lyngarsdóttir, former GPL Manager of the Year winner and new women’s team coach being given temporary oversight of the squad for this tournament. Kang’s deputy, Torsten, remains as assistant. Bjarnveig was known as a risk-taker with an attacking mindset and a willingness to give young players a chance, but it remains to be seen how these tendencies will adapt to the demands of international play.

Squad: A 23-woman squad has been named for the tournament. With a couple of exceptions, it can generally be assumed numbers 1–11 will start.

The Græntfjaller national team has historically been mixed in gender. However, the Baptism of Fire tournament overlapped with the Olympics, and while the men’s team consisted of young players only, the women’s was not age-restricted. This led to a team consisting of men [and old men at that] being sent to the Baptism of Fire, which they ended up winning. It has always been a minor national embarrassment that the first major footballing success on the international stage wasn’t very representative, and an opportunity to correct this by fielding an all-women team has been sought out, with the Eagle’s Cup being deemed a suitable such tournament.
Football is only just becoming a millionaire’s game in Græntfjall, and then only at the top. Players earn a decent wage in the GPL but rarely more than that; the most expensive foreign transfer signings have been low seven figures NS$.
A particular type of footballer, nicknamed “BFGs” (Big Fucking Græntfjallers), is associated with the country, but these are almost all men; except in central defense and defensive midfield roles, most of the women in this team are quicker and more skilful.
Græntfjall do not traditionally appoint a designated captain, and instead have the starting XI elect a captain before each captain. During the early days of Kang’s reign at the helm, Hrærekur Jvarsson served as captain on a permanent basis, but as he is (obviously) absent from this tournament, they will default to an elective model here.
Timing note: In my timeline this occurs a few months after the WCoH ending and prior to WCQs beginning; 1 year after the last CR; 2 years after the last Eagle’s Cup. It occurs during the Græntfjaller winter; given football is a summer sport here, this affects our hosting arrangements. It occurs immediately after Transfer Window 31 closes, with players assumed to be with their new clubs but granted leave.

Next season, Gabríella is expected to become the first regular female goalkeeper in the GPL, after winning promotion with Mokofen. Livia played a few games with Hofvinger but was never a regular first team starter and is now with second division Esna; Rebecca has never played a single game for her club side, Altendalur, instead being loaned out to lower league Aigsvinger. Livia was reserve at the Olympics but has not played for the national team; indeed, no woman has ever kept goal for the full Snow Wolves side. That suggests this position is likely to be one of the biggest uncertainties, and potentially one of the biggest weaknesses. Though Gabríella is the more talented shot-stopper, she starts as reserve behind the more experienced but less agile Livia.

Every single defender in the Copa Rushmori squad was male, but that doesn’t include Emeli Vilbertsdóttir, who is one of the most experienced players in NT history and was controversially omitted as the team played without fullbacks. She’s back, now, along with her partner on the right, Elektra. Eir – released from the Savojar leagues and looking to move elsewhere – and Paulina, who played for Bjarnveig at Maigburg, are their understudies. The center back pairing marries the experienced Arinbjörg Björnsdóttir with the immensely physically strong but largely untested Magga Vilmarsdóttir. Center back is historically the strongest position for the NT, but all such players have been male, so this is quite a departure. In reserve, Wilhelmina is another Bjarnveig-Maigburg staple, while Naomi is a more skilled player able to push up into defensive midfield roles. With Mühlrich being relegated, she too is looking to impress another club with a good performance here but may find it hard to break into the playing 11.

As evidenced by the cap numbers and foreign leagues represented, the midfield is far more experienced, and includes the bulk of the regular NT. The biggest loss is probably at defensive midfield, where Jade Miansdóttir may need support from Sara Aðalsteinnsdóttir. Otherwise, this is a near-full strength side, with wingers Hanne and Lana flanking Amanda, who has flourished in a more attacking role in recent years. The mercurial young Sara K is included straight from the Di Bradini Cup. Johanna, who had a hugely impressive season with Megabrantid, could get a lot of playing minutes even off the bench.

With Jason Þórhallursson absent, the strikers have a lot to gain – and, having recently completed high-profile transfers, a lot to prove. Both have been effective but not prolific for the NT, Eiríka playing out of position a lot of the time: this is her first chance in a true 9 role to go score a hatful of goals for the coach she played with for years at Maigburg. Justiina, sometimes out of favor through injury concerns, can likewise prove her doubters wrong with a solid tournament. The options behind them are more surprising. Mæja is an outside pick, chosen for her pace rather than her nose for goal, while Lilly, who disappointed at Gunzlach and was bundled off to the Dagan leagues, is a goal poacher but too physically small to make much impression even at the domestic level. At the international level her selection is almost baffling.

Soccer is a summer sport in Græntfjall, which is a wintry, alpine nation with (given its Rushmori location in the temperate zone) an inexplicably harsh climate. Given the timing of this Cup, all ‘home’ games are once again played at the National High Performance Sports Center. This obviates any home advantage and may in fact disadvantage Græntfjaller players who have previously struggled in tropical conditions, but there is a clear secondary aim of gaining experience in the conditions, which are likely to be hot and humid, but not unbearably so.

The NHPSC is a large multi-sports complex featuring training areas for almost every Olympic and other major sport that Græntfjall competes in. Built prior to the last Cup, it has a football stadium with a projected capacity of 50,000: at present, though, only about half that will be made available for use on match-day as work continues on some stands. In order to meet the minimum requirement of 30,000 [whether or not this requirement exists in NS, we will be roleplaying it as doing so] additional seating will be provided through temporary structures. In most respects the stadium is ‘complete’ and up to full international standards, with the exception of limited corporate hospitality availability.

The NHPSC is based in Græntfjaller Multinesia, the largest constituent island of the Græntfjaller South Indies. Where these lie is somewhat confusing as those consulting the Rushmori regional map will find no reference to them: they certainly exist though and lie in tropical oceans far to the south east/west/up/down/strange/charm/other of the Græntfjaller mainland.

The Græntfjaller South Indies were the only major colonial possession of the Queendom captured during the Age of Piracy. During the 20th century, Græntfjall fell under communist rule and the islands were granted independence, an unfortunate oversight which was quickly corrected in the immediate post-communist era, welcoming the islanders back under the benevolent and wise rule of the mainland, which has brought them many modern amenities such as industrial strip-mining of the landscape, while employment opportunities abound in the sweatshops of the Export Processing Zones that, free from international labor regulations, are veritable hives of industry churning out produce for the Græntfjaller and international markets nearly round-the-clock! Many natural beauty spots have been preserved, however, most of them now playing home to luxury vacation resorts, private residences, and golf courses.

There is a naval base, multiple air strips, and a full marine battalion, on the islands, and a heavily military presence is noticeable. There are some restricted areas where photography is not permitted and some areas of the islands are completely off-limits. Have no fear, though, security is assured, and terrorist groups such as the savage “Multinesian Human Rights Council” and “Indigenous People’s Clean Water Defence Fund” are being firmly policed to prevent any rogue action such as passing on documentation of the pollution of their tribal homelands.

Brief National Team History
The Kadongo Kamu have played in exactly 446 games, as of the beginning of AOCAF LXIII. This will be mark the beginning of our 15th World Cup cycle overall. We have entered in 12 previous World Cup Qualification campaigns(WCQ73, WCQ74, WCQ75, WCQ76, WCQ77, WCQ79, WCQ80, WCQ82, WCQ84, WCQ85, WCQ86, and WCQ87), and have made 8 World Cup Finals appearances(WC80-87). We have also participated in Baptism of Fire 60, and been a participant in three different Cup of Harmonies(CoH 66, CoH 67, and CoH 71). In three Cup of Harmonies, Banija has never once moved past the group stage in the competition, and in their lone Baptism of Fire, they earned a lone point.

After not competing at all during the World Cup 78 Cycle due to the RBSA's bankruptcy, they re-entered the world of international football in World Cup 79 cycle. A shocking World Cup 79 Qualification campaign saw them on the brink of qualifying, but the team simply ran out of gas and lost 4 of their final 5 matches to not make it to Ceni/Drawkland. Since then, the U21 team got 3rd place at the 42nd Di Bradini Cup, and the national team advanced to the quarterfinals of AOCAF LV, AOCAF LVI, and AOCAF LVII, establishing themselves as a strong regional side, falling to the eventual champs in the latter two tournaments. They stunningly qualified for World Cup 80, after starting poorly by losing 5 of their first 9, to going unbeaten in the second half of qualifying, where they won 7 of those games. In the World Cup 80 Qualification playoffs, a 3-0 first leg victory in Montreal, Royal Kingdom of Quebec, powered the team through to their first ever appearance in the World Cup Finals, advancing to sport's pre-eminent competition 5-3 on aggregate over Mercedini. While a pair of one goal losses saw them eliminated after two games, they earned their first ever victory at the World Cup Finals in a 2-0 win over New Gazi in their final group stage game. As they hosted World Cup 81, they went directly to the tournament, and went to their first ever knockout stages, winning Group A before falling, 1-1(2-1 AET) to Turori in the Round of 16. They cruised to qualification in World Cup 82, maintaining a top two spot in their World Cup Qualification group behind Brenecia for the entirety of the World Cup 82 Qualification campaign, getting to the tournament with relative ease before bowing out in the group stages.

The World Cup 83 cycle was their strongest yet. Starting with AOCAF LVIII on home soil, co-hosted with the Commonwealth of Baker Park, the Kadongo Kamu won 6 consecutive matches to open the tournament, taking their winning streak all the way to the final. Unfortunately, they were felled, 4-2, at home to their archrivals, the Equestrian States. Co-hosting World Cup 83 as well, the Banijans made a miraclous run at the World Cup, upending 5th ranked South Covelllo on penalties, and defeating the then two-time defending world champions Vilita in the quarterfinals, before falling, 3-2, at the national stadium to Starblaydia. They added to the trophy case, however, earning a bronze medal after defeating Cassadaigua in the 3rd place playoff game.

The World Cup 84 cycle, the first with real title expectations for the Banijans, was a disappointment in the regionals, as we fell 1-0 to Ko-oren in the AOCAF Round of 16, although we advanced to the quarterfinals of World Cup 84 before dropping to Eura in extra time. The World Cup 85 cycle seems to be a promise of hope for the Banijans. Although AOCAF LX was a rough tournament for the Banijans, it was surrounded by two excellent tournament performances for the Banijans. We won the U21 World Cup(DBC 47), and are just coming off earning our first ever senior-level trophy, by winning the 8th Eagle's Cup to be admitted as a full, permanent member of the Eagle's Club right before the beginning of World Cup Qualifying. Following that, the Banijans dominated World Cup 85 Qualifying, going wire-to-wire as the first place team in their World Cup Qualifying group, as well as earning more points in World Cup Qualifying(67) than any other team did throughout the entire campaign. Those strong performances both in the Eagle's Cup and World Cup Qualifying have caused fans to put an up and down AOCAF behind them, and heighten the standard for World Cup 85. While they escaped the group stages with four points, strong wins over Vilita and Zwangzug in the knockouts put them on course for a medal, as they eventually beat allies Baker Park in the bronze medal match, after falling 3-2 to the eventual champions Free Republics in the semifinal.

After a return to the AOCAF LXI Quarterfinals, their first quarterfinal appearance in the last 3 editions of the regional championships, they fell to Chromatika on penalties. The World Cup 86 Qualification campaign went rather swimmingly- the national team went a perfect 18-0-0 in World Cup Qualifying, the first time that had happened in well over 10 cycles. The multiverse's #1 ranked squad was brimming with confidence, the two-time bronze medalists entering World Cup 86 trying to win the biggest trophy in all of sports for the first time.

Marcus Waters has always preached the following- "you've got to win at home before you can win the World Cup." It's always meant you've got to win in Atlantian Oceania before you can expect to win the World Cup. And while we've never won the AOCAFs, our group was all Atlantian Oceania sides- Ko-oren, Chromatika, and Mriin. We finished in first place with a 1-0 win over Ko-oren, a 2-2 draw against Chromatika, and a 0-0 draw against Mriin being enough to earn 5 points. Then, we faced a gauntlet of former World champions. A 1-0 win over them put us in our fourth consecutive World Cup Quarterfinal, against 5 time World champions Valanora. A thrilling 4-3 win put us in the semifinal, again facing a GSW rival- World Cup 84 winners Farfadillis. In one of the wildest World Cup semifinals ever played, Banija came out on top 7-6, with a stoppage time winner to put them in the Final against the World Cup 85 winners Nephara. It was a true game of the century- neither team had lost a competitive match since the start of World Cup Qualifying, neither losing during Qualifying or the Finals. And in that thriller, it would be the Banijans who would win, taking a lead and holding onto it, winning by 3 goals to 2 against Nephara to lift the trophy and declare themselves World Cup Champions.

The ensuing AOCAF was strong, but not as strong as they wanted it to be. After starting slowly and losing their opening two games, they finished well done the stretch of group play, and even won a pair of knockout stage games before eventually falling to the champions, Baker Park, in the Semifinals. The Banijans redeemed themselves by earning a bronze medal against Sarzonia. The team took a B squad to Eagle's Cup IX, but a strong performance there landed them a silver medal, losing in the final to Valanora. World Cup 87 did not go the way they expected, getting eliminated in the group stages for the first time since World Cup 82.

Formation 5-4-1

Given the late communication about the Eagle's Cup invitation, the KFA have made some changes. Davenport, normally an assistant coach, will act as the head coach, heading a slightly modified staff that sees some #2s act as #1. The players are all from the University and Academy teams, hoping to sign their first professional after graduation (for the former) or turning 20 (for the latter) - and yes, there are plenty of exceptions to these two rules. University players are currently still pursuing a degree, while Academy players have chosen football more or less fulltime since high school but are still often given a vocational education on the side.

Players with an asterisk* won't be available for the entire duration of the tournament: they have professional contracts, and their clubs can call on them to appear for them rather than the national team.

They're still working on recruitment, but the work they've done to get on the University clubs' level within half a decade is impressive.

Coach- Brittany Byers (49) (Brattleboro FC)
Brittany was a part of the national team roster as a defender in World Cups 78 and 79, and served as the captain of those teams. She was already in her 30's at that time, so she was unable to have a longer career with the team. Those leadership qualities helped her become a success as a coach domestically. Served as an assistant to Stephanie Sweeney in World Cup 87, and the last two Copa Rushmoris. Expected to be officially announced soon as the regulat head coach (with Sweeney now CASE President).

Asst. Coach-- Matt Villareal (39) (Baker Park)
Villareal, a former center midfielder, was the first ever NT captain of Baker Park in the World Cup, and had a successful playing career. In Baker Park, he became used to mixed gender teams, so will not have an issue here with Cassadaigua. Seen as a strong coaching prospect one day, he was added to Byers staff on loan to get him experience with different international concepts.

World Cup 81/82/83/84

Football Association of the Commonwealth of Baker Park

The FAC are honored to be invited to participate in the legendary Eagle's Cup, which truly represents the best of the best. This will be the the most experienced roster ever sent to a tournament that is neither the World Cup nor the AOCAF.

Annabeth Westmoreland and Antonio Sotolongo are the current NT co-Captains, but will honor four different squad members with the armband on the occasion of those player's 50th NT appearance. Pryna Rasanamira will reach the half-century in the opener versus Nova Anglicana, Grant Coffey and Reggie Laing will each require two more matches and Kelly O'Connell will lead her country most likely in the second half of the tournament.

Jennifer Prescott will lead the side with Tony Weiss as her assistant; AM Darren Kirby has been given an opportunity to take time to be with his wife and their third child, born within the last month. Hailey Reinhart-Zavaros and Elaine King will be joined by Hailey's husband Ryan, the FAC's Director of Coaching Development, in rounding out the coaching staff.

The Cormorants are in the form of their life, and eager to truly continue building a dynasty. Yet again, Nephara will only be selecting players who were not in the Copa Rushmori squad, and many of these players - Reed, Rostock, Kalevi and Senninger especially - will be looking to force their way into the next World Cup squad. Others are on the fringes, while more still are probably only ever going to get this one shot. Still, they're fresh and taking it seriously. Nephara haven't generally done too well in the Cup - apart from the time they won the thing - but their ambitions aren't ready to be checked just yet.

Tactics

Nepharan football is based around playing hard, pressing aggressively, playing for keeps. Occasionally this leaves gaps behind the high defensive line, though most Nepharan goalkeepers are in the sweeping mould these days to compensate. Marchers are, by and large, a physically imposing folk, and eager to throw their size around. The footballing culture is intensely competitive, and those that survive to make their way to the top are hellbent on winning at any cost. Elbows to the face. Subtle digs in the ribs. Diving is dishonest when opponents do it but streetwise when Nepharim do it. In short, Nephara are the bully from two years above who picked you, specifically, out as a natural target.

That is often the foreign perspective, but it overlooks a key fact; Nepharan football can honestly be beautiful to watch. Generations of players brought up on dry plains or asphalt play the ball quickly and fearlessly along the ground, never sideways when there's a forward option open, always looking to stretch and probe and stay one really good pass away from a goal. Nepharim are undoubtedly physical, even cynical, but their success has been built off the backs of ruthless, fast-paced passing football.

The Godhead
For home matches, and during international tournaments, Nephara wheels out the 'Godhead', a giant boulder with an eerie resemblance to Gethin Ramsey, first manager of the Cormorants in the modern era and by now long dead. Nepharim have a superstitious streak, and while nobody's saying it is, in fact, the mystic reincarnation of their most iconic leader, nobody's quite not saying it, either. The Godhead is traditionally 'walked' to the stadium by Nepharim ultras using an intricate series of ropes, and often a flare is wedged into its 'mouth' to simulate a smoking cigar.

Daughter of the legendary Gethin Ramsey, Nephara's Baptism of Fire manager and (probably) the first manager to take three different nations to the World Cup, but Triffid's eager to get out from under that shadow. A very good but not excellent player, Ramsey took naturally to management and pursues a more modern version of the elder Ramsey's ideals - industry backed by data, athleticism backed by sport science, pace backed by skill. Catherine Sedgwick is a former national team player and formidable manager in her own right, here to offer a steady hand at the tiller and keen tactical mind. Together, they won the World Cup. What else is there to say?

Nephara's depth at centre-half looks decidedly thin, though Bruhn is no slouch. Versatile, intellligent Verlander will hope to break back into national team contention, a player who has been at World Cups in the past, but time is against her and she hasn't had the best couple of domestic seasons. Rostock is in a similar boat, but in significant better form, and the captain's armband reflects the faith they have in her. But is she too defensive-minded for the Cormorants' needs?

The deluge of wingers at the moment is a little insane, especially on the right. Mrdja, Belgrade and Koerner seem unassailable, but on the other hand, Reed is a genuinely brilliant talent who deserves an avenue to shine, and Sauthier's pulled her weight in the green and black before. Cross specialist Kalevi and Reed will likely both be on the plane next World Cup. In the centre, it's a little less set in stone. Thalassa Fletcher hasn't quite risen as meteorically as the unrelated Exene Fletcher, but looks to have what it takes to be the creative fulcrum of this side, with Annika Miller a rare Brenecia-based player in support.

While Avetisyan has done capable work for the Cormorants in the past and never quite left Ramsey's list of options, Danica Marinkovic is the one to keep an eye on here, despite what looks to be a fairly narrow opportunity to break through into the national team. Ruthless and ambitious, her eye for goal is never going to go out of fashion. Otherwise, there is solidity but not inspiration; Schanzer has only just left the nest of the Rams, the hulking figure of Pawnbroker's fresh off relegation with Mayville and hasn't quite hit the anticipated heights, while Murin is a promising and well-travelled tecnical striker.

Fillies Make Eagles Cup Debut,

For the first time in their history, Cassadaigua will be participating in the Eagles Cup, which is essentially a cup of champions. It combines the winners of major regional tournaments, as well as winners of the World Cup, Baptism of Fire, and Cup of Harmony. There are also a group of nations that are guaranteed a spot every time out. It is not something that has always run, so when Cassadaigua has won championships, it was not in a year that the Eagles Cup took place. Now, if you are wondering how we are eligible, then, and I know you are, it is because we were the runner up in the Copa Rushmori. The winner of the Copa Rushmori, Nephara, was able to qualify due to winning the World Cup, therefore allowing the Fillies to get in through the Copa Rushmori door.

In their group, Cassadaigua will have to play one of our biggest allies and perhaps our most bitter enemy. The ally is Baker Park, and we look forward to taking them on during the tournament. The bitter enemy is Tequilo, and it will be the first time that we ever play them since that terrible day in the Under 18 championships. That is the way the competition begins for us as well, so we will be interested to see if any bad blood from that boils over. Meghan Wolcott, one of the veterans of this team says that, “We have to keep a smart head about things. We don’t want to be remembered for being the team that in their first Eagles Cup competition, they got a bunch of red cards because they were more interested in hurting their opponent.” Defender Brooke Sutter seems to agree, “We’d like to get good results in the Eagles Cup. It is important for us to play in this as a team as part of our preparation for the World Cup, and if we are getting involved in extra curricular stuff, then we are not getting that needed experience. But I also think that if they instigate anything with us, then the emotions will take over.” Whether or not the players are just saying this right now and things will be different on the field remains to be seen, but I would have to imagine that the team will not be looking to dig themselves into a hole with red cards and potential suspensions, and it does seem as though the team wants to begin the Eagles Cup in a more dignified manner. Lupe’s #22 will be retired during a World Cup proper game involving Cassadaigua, in Concord Heights. About this honor, Enriquez told me, “It is one of those things, that when you are playing, you don’t think about a whole lot, but you really admire those who were the greats before you. I was honored to get the call, I had been told that it was in the works, and I certainly noticed that no one else had worn #22 since I had played, but to have this be official is such an amazing honor.” As a defender, Enriquez’s worth to the team won’t be measured in goals, but what she did in the back end was special.

Coming off of their first victory in the Campionato Esportiva, the Lions are ready to encounter non-regional foes for the first time in many years. They have qualified for the World Cup multiple times, but the last time was over twenty years ago. Strikingly beautiful and fit, nobody would question her if she put on the uniform herself and went out on the pitch; her physique definitely belong out there. Smart, calculating, and personable, there were actually some concerns about her becoming a visual distraction to the players, which were shot down quickly by her professionalism and integrity. That being said, the Chromatik locker room will be... a bit more spicy than before. The players have done an admirable job of keeping things professional between them, which has allowed her to perform her duties without a problem. After spending 3 seasons being trained in Crosaibi at Marine Coast United, Edgeli made the switch down the coast to the Lonngeylin Coliseum for Season 43. While Strike were unable to win any silverware, Edgeli fit straight into the squad as one of the top performing defenders in the entire league earning instant plaudits and recognition back in Turori. Edgeli would be an ever-present in the Turorian squad earning the role of captain as the team advanced to the World Cup Semi Finals for the first time in the nations history at World Cup 81 in the Free Republics and Banija. After a long absence from regional competition, Edgeli, retired from the Turori National Team, would captain the Vilita and Turori National Team during the 60th AOCAF Competition. The midfielder would become a permanent fixture in the Colonial Sile roster in a decision that improved the players exposure but would ultimately reduce their silverware haul as Rammsissil would enter a period of success including internationstatal and domestic trophies while Colonial Sile continued their historical trend of high finishes in the Vilitan Stellar Division with no trophies to show for it.

The Turorian played an important role in Vilita & Turori’s triumph during AOCAF 56, the only major internationstatal tournament Giaoka has won.

Officially declared for Turori during the World Cup 84 Qualification Cycle making their debut in a 3-0 victory over Guadalajara. Scored their first career goal for Turori on Matchday 11 of World Cup 84 Qualifiers agaisnt 95X. Played one season in Apox before returning to Atlantian Oceania to join Farfishi Champions Cup contenders René Skaé during the 27th Transfer Window. Rauogba is also an Olympic Gold Medalist with the Vilitan Union side in the XIV Olympic Games.

Ruaplal was one of just 3 players to participate in both the Vilita & Turori squads for the 45th and 50th Di Bradini Cup, improving on the second occasion winning the Di Bradini Cup Trophy. Mungwaii barely played a full season in Seraii, however, as the Turori National Team strikers potentially was quickly noticed and Jungle Strike FC came calling making Mungwaii the highest transfer in Eastal Lunar history as well. In 15 seasons at Jungle Strike FC, Mungwaii would win the Vilitan Stellar Division Five times, the Vilitan Cup 6 times as well as a pair of Tropical trophies. Mungwaai holds the Strike FC record for most Star-of-Match performances in a single season having been named first star in 12 of Strikes 26 Stellar Division matches during Vilitan League Season 61. Mungwaai is also tied for 5th all time in goals scored for Strike FC along with Friekder Dandaellion. The Turorian is also an Olympic Gold Medalist having been a part of the Vilitan Union Squad at the XI Olympic Games in Aeropag and won the AOCAF 56 Title with Vilita and Turori. After fighting to keep their place in the starting Lineup at Strike FC during Vilitan League Season 62, Mungwaii decided to search for a new challenge and joined Zwangzug side Arlington City, quickly making an impact helping the team to first place and a Taça das Confederações Final victory.

Aikiki’s partnership with Mungwaii helped boost Strike back to the top of the Vilitan League earning trophies in the Tropical Trophy, Vilitan Cup and ultimately the Vilitan Stellar Division. As a youngster, Aikiki won AOCAF 56 for their first major trophy at the intenationstatal level and would later win the Gold Medal at the XIV Olympic Games.

Location :: The Eagle's Club is located in the purpose built city of Eelandii, midway between the Turorian cities of Almintora and Cednia.

Stadium History :: Although Turori were champions of Eagle's Cup III, the purpose built Eagle's Club facility in Eelandii was not constructed until just prior to Eagle's Cup V. Prior to this, Almintora National Stadium in Almintora was Turori's designated Eagle's facility.

The main pitch at the Eagle's Club has only one permanent grand stand which sits directly over the facility entrance at the south end of the stadium behind the goal with a capacity of about 8,000. The main pitch is available as a practice facility for any Eagle's Club member, permanent or cyclic honorary members, when visiting Atlantian Oceania or Turori whether they are contesting an International Match or just holding a tour practice. There are additional pitches and sport facilities on the complex accessible only to Eagle's Club members. Additionally, all facilities in the purpose built sporting hub of Eelandii are available to Eagle's Club members on a first-come first-serve basis.

During Eagle's Cup events, temporary grandstands are constructed along the two long sides of the pitch supporting between 20-45,000 additional fans. The temporary grand stands are physically separated from the pitch by a Brick promenade covered in vine overgrowth.

The most important event held at the Eagle's Club is the Champions Ceremony. While the Eagle's Cup Final is typically held off-site to encourage larger attendance numbers, the final contestants return to the Eagle's Club to receive their medals. Prior to the medal ceremony, a third place match is held to determine which nation will receive the bronze medals. For logistical purposes, the Third Place Playoff match goes straight to penalty kicks if tied after 90 minutes, ensuring the medal ceremony is not delayed. This scheduling detail also makes the Eagle's Cup unique in that the third place playoff match takes place after the competition final.

Primary Tenants :: All members of the Eagle's Club are the primary tenants at the Eagle's Club main pitch. The expanded-seating capacity Eagle's Club venue is used only for Eagle's Club knockout round matches or matches between two Eagle's Club members.

Location :: Almintora National Stadium is located in Almintora, Turori. Almintora is the capital city of the Island Emirate of Turori and has been the capital ever since the time of Turorian independance.

Capacity :: 79,000 (All Seated)

Stadium History :: The Almintora National Stadium served as the home of the Football Association of Turori and the Turori National team from their entrance onto the international competition scene prior to World Cup 15 until the Football Association relocated their headquarters to the purpose built Eels Park community in Eelandii, Turori.

The Almintora National Stadium was originally constructed as a 45,000 seat stadium for use by the National Team during World Cup 15 and World Cup 16 qualification. However, when it became evident that Turori's nearby neighbors, the Tropics of Vilita, were being considered as the potential hosts of World Cup 17, the Football Association of Turori strategically aligned itself with their former colonial lands in order to ensure that of the 8 stadia selected for the World Cup Finals, one would be from Turori. Naturally, the Almintora National Stadium was the stadium of choice and would serve as the first time the Island Emirate of Turori would open its doors to a major international event. With a lot on the line, the Turorian government partnered with the Football Association of Turori to increase the capacity of the Almintora National Stadium from 45,000 to 79,000 in time for the World Cup 17 finals.

The move was proven even more fruitful when the Turori Eels themselves qualified for the World Cup 17 finals, the first finals appearance for Turori, and were able to play each of their group stage matches at their home stadium.

With the success of hosting one group of the World Cup 17 finals at the Almintora National Stadium, Turori had put itself on the map. Soon after it would be announced that the Island Emirate of Turori would host World Cup 19 in a joint bid with The Belmore Family. Naturally, the crown jewel of Turorian stadiums, the Almintora National would ultimately host the World Cup Final - the single most prestigious match in the multiverse.

Unfortunately for the Almintora National Stadium, hosting the World Cup 19 final was something of a 'peak' over the course of the stadiums lifespan. Co-sharing the arena between the Turori National Team and Turorian domestic side FC Almintora accelerated the wear, tear and aging within the facility. To make matters worse, the mediocre performance of FC Almintora in the domestic league meant that incentive to invest in further rennovation of the arena was minimal. The stadium would still be chosen to host the final of the 26th Cup of Harmony, but even by that time the Cednia Beach Center in Cednia had started to become the premier sporting facility on the Island. In fact, even the Cup of Harmony 26 final was originally awarded to the newly built Coliseum of the Inurahtii in the Inura Forest, however, the Safety & Health Initiative of Turori determined that the site would not be ready in time to host spectators, with the Final site being retroactively chosen as the Almintora National Stadium due to its experience having hosted the World Cup 19 final.

Despite having been supplanted as Turori's international stadium of choice, the Almintora National Stadium has accrued one honor that no other stadium in Turori - or in Vilita, can lay claim. Almintora National Stadium is the only stadium in Vilita & Turori to have been selected as a host site for the UICA Globe Cup, having been home to the 55th Globe Cup final. Almintora National Stadium also hosted the 66th UICA Champions Cup Final.

Primary Tenants :: FC Almintora currently compete in the Vilitan Declasse Division. The Turori National Team continue to play occasional matches at the arena during World Cup Qualifying due to the arenas central location in Almintora, the capital city of Turori.

Location :: Cocoabo Park Arena is located at Cocoabo Park in the Cocoabo Forest. The Cocoabo Forest is a Cocoabo Preserve built on Calanian lands formerly held in trust by the Atlantian Oceania Regional Defense Organization (AORDO). Stadium History :: Cocoabo Park Arena is a sports and demonstration complex created at Cocoabo Park to attract future sporting events to the Tropicorp-CPS collaborative education, enrichment and entertainment destination on the shores of the Cocoabo Forest.

The Eagle's Cup VI final at Cocoabo Park Arena was a well attended fixture, open to the public with any admission to the Cocoabo Park. Major events at the Cocoabo Park Arena also serve as educational events as visitors are be able to learn about the Cocoabo, ongoing Preservation efforts at the Cocoabo Forest and see Cocoabo in their re-constructed natural habitat. Cocoabo Park Arena has also hosted Cocoabo Squad matches for the Turori National Team as well as being a major venue of the Tropicorp hosted AOCAF LIVe.

Primary Tenants :: Cocoabo Park Arena has no permanent tenants. It has been used as a training and demonstration facility for the Cocoabo Enrichment & Enhancement Project (CEEP) as well as hosting International Matches for Turori and Tropicorp. It is expected that future uses for Cocoabo Park Arena may include events and shows for Park visitors included displays by trained and skilled Cocoabo as well as one-off international caliber sporting events. The Cocoabo Forest team in the Tropicorp Lower Leagues play occasional games in the arena.

Eagle's Cup pits BP versus elite

The Commonwealth of Baker Park National Soccer Team crosses another threshold with their invitation to the 10th Eagle's Cup, the most exclusive tournament in the multiverse; it's so prestigious that manager Jennifer Prescott has called up a heavyweight lineup for the squad who will face another gauntlet similar to the opposition on offer at the AOCAF.

The "Next Gen"--as the core of the players who made up the roster of the last two regional squads are being called to differentiate them from the "Golden Generation" and the "Second Generation"--will get a chance to see their competition for World Cup 88 squad places up close; Prescott will certainly use the six match group stage in the same way a series of friendlies would provide a platform for mixing & matching lineups and combinations.

The opposition will be a mix of the unknown, familiar, and recently introduced; Nova Anglicana will be the opening day foe at the Newport City Stadium, but it's not the same nation that qualified for the finals of World Cups 81 & 82, ranked in the Top 30 and very close to BP in the rankings at that time.

This is their overseas foothold, Champions of the most recent Campionato Esportiva and correctly identified as the Nova Anglicana Autonomous Zone of Esportiva; perhaps the Methodists and the Anglicans can have a civilized pre-match sing-along ahead of their contests.

Cassadaigua will be next up on the fixture list, having familiarity with the BBP Stadium (they were the first ever opponent) and the squad, as former NT Captain and FAC youth development coach Matt Villareal has been seconded to CASE for further experience.

The final guest will be Tequilo, winners against a BP side in the Sarzo Memorial Cup at the BBP where one of the regions was hosted; they are the current champions of the Independent's Association Championship, which has been a test bed for emerging nations outside of "Big Three" who are continuing to bang louder on the door to the World Cup Champions penthouse. They'll see if the State Fairgrounds Stadium in Springfield is to their liking.

Prescott has proven beyond doubt that she is one of the best managers in the multiverse in single elimination circumstances; if BP can finish in one of top two spots in the group, it would be hard to bet against her.

CORMORANTS BEST XI: REVISITED

It's been over a decade since the Herald's last attempt at an XI. It was, it seems in hindsight, somewhat premature. The national side was in something of a lull at the time, eager to cling onto past glories, and tehre was really one crowning glory above all to cling to; most of the players recognised were in the World Cup winning side of 74.

But now, we have the luxury of success, and more distinct eras of glory. We have more legitimate conflicts about to be sparked on Twii. Things are, in short, more interesting. Here, then, is Nephara's best-ever XI.

GOALKEEPER
One suspects that Aranea Provost will have something to say about this, someday. Honestly, one suspects she wants it now. But she'll have to be patient; Diandra Ballard is the standout pick here. Ballard was never the most modern goalkeeper; her distribution was fine enough, her command good, but what really set her apart was the sheer number of shots that should have crept into her net, and didn't. Ballard made the impossible look possible, and made the exceptional routine. This despite a slow start that saw her have to bide her time to break through at FC Endeavour, in a career that eventually wound down in Samotath in her forties, as lynx-like as ever.
Honourable Mention The strangely clockwork Hesterine Mercator also managed a century between the posts, a truly complete goalkeeper with a glittering club career, most prominently with Eastweald. Portia Thrift is one of two Baptism of Fire veterans to make the list; had she not been in her early thirties by then, she could have done so much.

RIGHTBACK
Scoring the only goal in a World Cup final as a defender? It's hard to look past Rovena Stride. One of many stunningly good players to emerge from the Harriers' academy, Stride's true to her name, always on the move and always taking up the right positions. While she'll often be found roving the forward lines - for instance, that goal against Ko-oren - she does consider herself a defender first and foremost, and prides herself on never being caught out at the back. A patriot at heart, signs are that she's happy spending her career in her homeland, and it's working out for her well.
Honourable Mention Baptism of Fire winner Anna Shrike was never properly appreciated at the time, but a stocky, overweight fullback who always flew her own way really came into her own in Ruland, snapping seamlessly into place at Ma Alameome, where the stress quickly shaved off the kilos. A relentless overlapping fullback, at her best in the opposing third.

CENTRE-HALF
It really cannot be anyone other than Hadrian Belfast. The leader in caps, after being a regular almost uninterrupted from early 20s to late 30s, and yet with a bizarrely bad sense of timing; a drop in form saw him miss out on Nephara's World Cup finals debut, and he retired from international football the year before World Cup 74. A peerless leader, he found his form anchoring the Takil-aggressive Dwile Warriors, once earning the Player of the Year award in what was at the time the world's strongest league. Playing for what was at the time a significantly less gifted Nephara side, however, he was entirely comfortable fighting fires and bailing out of danger - always, always calmly.
Honourable Mention Dieter Konoval has the dubious honour of being a staple of Nephara's time in 'the Wilderness' - the fallow period between World Cup 76 and 83, inclusive. Nevertheless, the hulking brute of a defender was always classier than people gave him credit for, and had the discipline never to put a foot wrong. How often can you say a man with such a penchant for sliding challenges so rarely gave away a foul?

CENTRE-HALF
Right now, Roxelana Thorn is arguably more popular than Belfast. The hulking, inked-up bruiser whose love story with her defensive partner captivated at least some of the world, Thorn's spent her career at the top of the club chain and helped push Nephara on to greater and greater heights. She leaves a gulf behind, but few could argue she has every right to think she's helped take the national team as far as she can, and continue with an increasingly impressive club career.
Honourable Mention Malachite Scharner was the pillar at the back of the other World Champion side, a young player who came in from nowhere, a mercurial and emotional figure who always left a bootprint on every game she played. An eventual falling out with Michael Brandon cut short her international career, in what sort of pass for her own terms.

LEFTBACK
Marcin Close edges it out, but the margin is... narrow. Most expected Close to be a one-club man at Brinemouth, but he's recently departed to see off his career in Audioslavia; even so, he went with Brinemouth and Nephara and the number 3 and the captain's armband like butter on bread. A quietly solid player, that rarest of things in Nephara, but he made an undoubted positive difference to the side's mercurial culture.
Honourable Mention Yet another goalscoring fullback hero, Scylla Vyntra's nerveless penalty-taking made the difference for Nephara a number of times en route to victory in 74. A peerless attacking fullback, intelligent, energetic and two-footed, flexible enough to play on either wing and indeed further forward, her bond with Lienke Vesper (fellow Serpentine-to-Treason-to-Cormorants player, generally partner on the left wing) was legendary. And platonic, surprising many.

RIGHT WINGER
Ahh, Adnan Szalai. Legend had it he couldn't read - ill-educated and dyslexic, sure, but urban legend regardless - but that only made him more exceptional regardless, to most. Szalai was the most vibrant of Nephara's attacking weapons en route to victory in 74, a perfect physical specimen with brilliant creativity and a real eye for goal. Turori National Team All Time XI - Biased to the Modern Era

Throughout the history of the Turori National Team, one thing was always constant. They could not advance past the Quarter Finals of the World Cup. As a result, by default, this look at the All Time Best Turorian players assumes that no player from the era prior to World Cup 50 could be considered as a starting player as none of those players ever played along side, coached or otherwise had any direct influence on the Modern Era sides who finally managed to put in a solid performance at the World Cup. It should be noted, however, that official records for National Team appearances and Goals were lost during the Cocoabo Riots at the Football Association of Turori headquarters. While information surely exists from the period prior to World Cup 79 it was not available for compilation prior to publishing of the All Time List. 11 players were chosen from the era World Cup 60-Present as starters for the All Time Turori Squad while 7 substitutes were chosen from the era prior to World Cup 50 based on popular panel with no statistical backstopping.

Nuakoi was widely expected to openly declare Turorian Nationality going into the qualifying, but with the rise of rival Ronji Miiastara, Nuakoi decided to leave the door open to a Vilitan return should he remain uncapped for Turori. After spending Season 26 and 27 at Turoki Isle, Nuakoi made the move to the Yeaddin Owls midway through Season 27 to become their #1 keeper. Nuakoi returned to Turoki during Season 29, joining the Turoki Tide as they finished runners up in the Stellar Division. Nuakoi was important in the Tide's success in the Tropical Trophy, the clubs first major Top-Level silverware, before rising to prominence in the lore's of the opening of a new chapter of Sporting Success in Turoki. Nuakoi led the Tide to the Stellar Division championship during Seasons 32 and 33 before a remarkable run to defeat rivals Strike FC in the 40th Globe Cup Final for Turoki's first International club competition title. Nuakoi's performances in goal were critical as a 0-0 shutout performance in the final match gave the Tide a remarkable victory in the UICA Super Cup, the first Vilitan League side to lift the trophy. While Nuakoi’s legend is much more impactful at the domestic level than for the National Team, the impact the Turorian goalkeeper had in turning the Turoki Tide into one of the biggest clubs in the multiverse could not be overlooked in the Modern Era 11 Consideration.

Edgeli would be an ever-present in the Turorian squad earning the role of captain as the team advanced to the World Cup Semi Finals for the first time in the nations history at World Cup 81 in the Free Republics and Banija. After a long absence from regional competition, Edgeli, retired from the Turori National Team, would captain the Vilita and Turori National Team during the 60th AOCAF Competition. After working with the Vilita & Turori National Team for two campaigns including the Olympic Games, Edgeli would take on the role of head coach for the Turori National Team during the Eagle’s Cup XIX Competition.

Descendant of Season 4 Turorian Player of the Season and National team legend Cuolia Tuirma, Klaillal workedwith Restiaa Mumamba to become the future "All-Around" player for the Turori National Team. Playing in a unique role, Tuirma was expected to fill the role of being able to play every game, in every position - even Goalkeeper, if there are no subs left. Tuirma started as a substitute during their debut campaign in World Cup 62 but quickly transitioned into a starting role against weaker opposition. After being brought up through the academy system at Kionao, Tuirma signed a professional contract with Colonial Sile in Vilita for Season 35, winning silverware in the first match, the Tropical Trophy triumph over Strike. Tuirma's stay in Sile didn't last long, however, coaxed back to the luxury of Arcticala Inlet to help in their Champions-Cup qualifying campaign of Season 38. Tuirma returned to Turori during Season 44 as a member of Mliona-Lpaka AFC. After retirement, Tuirma would become the manager of the Turori National Team and lead the team through the Glass Ceiling of the Quarter Finals and ultimately through to the World Cup 82 Final which they would lose to colonial rivals Vilita.

Mumamba is an expert choice for a third sub or to allow tactical changes on the pitch without substitutions being made. The strong and versatile performances of Mumamba during Season 28 earned Mumamba a high profile transfer to defending Stellar Division champions Arcticala Inlet but he left the Electricians the following season to be apart of the growing Yeaddin Owls squad. Mumamba spent 4 seasons in Yeaddin without recording any meaningful domestic awards other than the Season 29 Turorian Player of the Season award. The lure of international competition was too great for Mumamba who joined the Turoki Tide for Season 34, doing so in time for their 43rd UICA Cycle run. Mumamba helpd the Tide lift the UICA Globe Cup and UICA Super Cup, one of three Turorian players on the roster for the Tide's Triumph. However, after achieving glory with the Tide, Mumamba returned to his former club Yeaddin, vowing to one day bring the same success back to the Lirai Asku Castle.

In 15 seasons at Jungle Strike FC, Mungwaii would win the Vilitan Stellar Division Five times, the Vilitan Cup 6 times as well as a pair of Tropical trophies. Mungwaai holds the Strike FC record for most Star-of-Match performances in a single season having been named first star in 12 of Strikes 26 Stellar Division matches during Vilitan League Season 61. Mungwaai is also tied for 5th all time in goals scored for Strike FC along with Friekder Dandaellion. The Turorian is also an Olympic Gold Medalist having been a part of the Vilitan Union Squad at the XI Olympic Games in Aeropag and won the AOCAF 56 Title with Vilita and Turori. After fighting to keep their place in the starting Lineup at Strike FC during Vilitan League Season 62, Mungwaii decided to search for a new challenge and joined Zwangzug side Arlington City, quickly making an impact helping the team to first place and a Taça das Confederações Final victory.

Zakazaka was the runner-up in the Stellar Division top Goalscorer charts in Season 38 before moving back to Vilita, this time to the Island of Turoki, to play for the Turoki Tide.

Milauo Slietah: The Goalie who Scored a Hattrick... against Starblaydia!

Of course, the most striking omission from the All Time Turorian XI is Goalkeeper Milauo Slietah. By restricting the starters to only those that appeared in the Modern Era, the selectors missed out on the opportunity to properly recognize one of the most famous goalkeepers in Turorian History, if not in the history of World Cup Committee organized footsport. Of course Slietah is famous for being the first Goalkeeper to score a hattrick in an official match, having accomplished the feat during the Cup of Harmony for World Cup 16 against future Five-Time World Cup Champion Nation Starblaydia, forever ensuring themselves a place in WCC folklore.

'Scoop' Ragnarsson covered the action for the Jhanna Chronical in Cockbill Street and penned the headline for the event "Slietah turns into national hero with performance of the century."

First of all, I thought I'd seen everything. After having seen our very own Stefan Haldorsson score from sixty-yards, I thought I'd seen the longest-distance goal we were ever likely to get in a match involving Starblaydia. I hate to admit it, but I was wrong. Turorians will be glad to hear that their Goalkeeper, Milauo Slietah, 24, of Cednia Beach in Turori, scored the most unlikely hat-trick this reporter, or anyone else, is ever likely to witness. Let me set the scene for you.

Picture, if you will, the Vimesbairn National Stadium in Cockbill Street, one of the more pronounceable grounds in the land. One one side we have the Brown and Blue of Turori. On the other the White and Purple of Starblaydia. Regional rivals, Starblaydia's relativerly poor Qualification campaign has left all the pundits believing Turori are favourites for the win. With the two squads of thirty and twenty-three respectively, Turori and Starblaydia pack their dugouts, technical areas and other seating allocations with players. In the early minutes, some of the younger Corinthian Spirits players squirt water from bottles at their club-mate Duncan Jacob, the Starblaydia U21 sweeper turned Turori Reserve. The fourth official sees to this tomfoolery as Marlian Hunial gently heads the ball back to his keeper. Slietah then proceeds to take a run up and drop-kicks the ball high, high into the air. The ball swirls around in the air as it leaves the stadium at the half-way line, plummeting back to the grass in a pin-point arc.

Just as the commentators are commenting on the huge distance of the kick, we see Starblaydi goalie Rodriguez Da Silva backtracking from his 18-yard line. The shaven-headed, goateed keeper sprints to his line as the crowd send up a cheer. Then, on the TV pictures, we see the white ball flash onto the screen and billow the Starblaydi net, beyond the leap of Da Silva. Somehow, incredibly, Slietah the 'keeper has scored from just outside his own penalty box, in a kick from his hands. Starblaydia are dumbfounded and Slietah is buried under a mass of Turorian players, subs and reserves.

The celebrations go on for more than a few minutes, but at the restart, Starblaydia come back into the game with renewed vigour. With crisp passing moves they makea mockery of the elated Turorian defence, J.J. Stark gets on the end of the move and slots home the equaliser. 1-1 is the score with around fifteen minutes left.

Then, with around fifteen seconds to go in the first half's injury time, Slietah does something strange and sprints up for the corner, won by Cuolia Tuirma. Some of the more aware Turorians yell at the 'keeper to get back, but he's not having any of it. As the corner is whipped in, no one sees him sneak in at the near post and bullet header the ball in off the inside of the woodwork. Once again the Turorians go mental as Slietah cheers like he's won the game. Unfortunately for him, he's not been paying attention and its half-time, not full-time. Starblaydia go in dumbstruck once again.

The second half was less exciting, of course, but there didn't seem to be any sort of a goal coming from either side. Turori seemed happy with their 2-1 lead while Starblaydia just couldn't break through. Then Turori substitute Kaboafo Iobabao broke into the box and was illegaly felled by Robert Cole and the referee blew for a penalty and gave Cole a yellow card for the clumsy challenge. Once more Slietah sprinted up from the back and demanded to take the penalty. This ego-maniac wanted his hat-trick, and he duely got it by smashing the ball past Da Silva's dive.

A goalkeeper with a hat-trick, and Starblaydia back to losing their opening matchdays. Such is life...

It was certainly the match that put Slietah into the history books forever. While perhaps not the Goalkeepers greatest contribution to footstport in the Island Emirate - particularly as a founding member of Cednia Beach AFC - a team that would ultimately go on to become the first Turorian club to win the Stellar Division title, but certainly as a goalkeeper scoring a legitimate hattrick in regular time, the legend of Milauo Slietah would live on for generations to come. After the match, Cockbill Street Reporter Icestone Morracca was able to speak with Slietah:

"Well I was kind of in shock when the first one went in, I'm sure I have gotten a friendly gust from the wind that's taken the ball out of the path that Da Silva's thought it was going in, and a stroke of luck has seen it sneak under the crossbar into the net. I guess from then I felt as if nothing could go wrong, so when the ref signalled that the corner was going to be taken, while the whistle rested in his mouth, I figured what the heck, I'll have a go at it, and being the goalkeeper I guess the Starblaydi players didnt see it in themselves to mark me, so there I went the ball came right to me, it was a great kick by Cuolia and i just managed to get enough of it to put it in off the bar. Obviously when Koboafo went down in the box, it wasn't going to be anyones choice, It's a once in a lifetime, I'll probably never score another goal in my life, so to have three in one night, it was just amazing. As far as the next match, I may be tempted for another long ball or two, but don't expect me running up for any corners!"

Of course, as legend would have it, those would not be the final goal(s) of Milauo Slietah's legendary career as Turori's goalkeeper. The following cycle during World Cup 17 Qualifying Slietah would get on the scoresheet again against one of the most infamous teams in the multiverse... Ravea. Thats right. Not only was Ravea the first team to concede 10 goals in a single match - right there in that very same qualifying group to Rejistania, but they also let Milauo Slietah score on them as well. At the time it was Slietah's 4th career goal and firmly established the legend of the Goalscoring Goalie from Turori.

While coming tantalizing close to winning the World Cup in his first venture into the Finals, he will be looking to the future with a very youthful side looking to try and retain its Eagles Cup crown. His favor of a methodical attack has been an ideal suit to the players in the pool and how they like to play as well as their own skill sets.

Reiniger was an intelligent defender in his playing days with Crawford City FC and the idea of stepping away from the game after his playing retirement didn't sit well with him. Reiniger believes in strict discipline but in being fair, while also preferring to play a possession based defensive tactic, that takes advantage of the opposition when they overextend. Much was admired about his single-minded approach to playing the 'right way', but his lack of a Plan B sank him in the rough waters of the Nepharim Premiership. The VSC hopes that attitude and defensive prowess would be better utilized in a national team capacity.

While not possessing the same level of reflexes as Smørdal, Julius is a great shot stopper in his own right and should be a reliable keeper for the squad.

A young attacking midfielder that has learned to play a little further back in order to have a chance to break into the national team rather than trying to dislodge Hawk. Hawk simply strives to be the very best footballer, captain, and teammate that there can be, with the hunger for perfection driving him forth on and off the pitch.

Gideon emerged as a powerful and reliable center midfielder during the Finals, coming to play a destroyer role alongside Larsen and was able to be a highly influential impact substitute. Strong and pacy, versatile enough to play both in the center of the park as well as on the wing when called upon, he looks to be a long term starter for the Marauders as long as his club career doesn't have him fall out of favor.

Thought to be one of the next great attacking wingers for the Marauders, Indra made the interesting decision to go to one of the struggling sides of the Audioslavia league. With plenty of room still to get better, she could be a superstar in the making, as long as the domestic situation does not get worse.

Part 7: XERO

What ever happened to...

At GOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLa!!! Trace & Track, we help you to answer that perennial pub question when conversation turns to pitxi nostalgia (pitxi meaning football, to you and me). And very popular right now in Tequilo, after the national team won it's first trophy at the recent IAC tournament in Muralos and Almuzahara, is that other favourite topic when you are past your first four litres of SunBeer™ - name your all time favourite XI. Here on the Trace & Track desk, we thought we could kill two Cormorants with one stone, by tracking down our all time favourites to see what they are up to now. Coming up in part 7, ask your nan if she remembers Xero, the Acacoyagua winger who got special dispensation from Unión to become the only player in Tequiloan pitxi history to wear the non-number '0' on his shirt. Winning four state titles in just over a decade with Acaco, Xeronimo Huaco-Coba was one of the most glamorous players of his day, a diminutive but startlingly quick outside left full of tricks and turns. He was quite ahead of his day and perhaps ought to have gone into coaching, since he often led tactical meetings and developed a philosophy of football all his own which today we might call the preposterously high press. But instead of coaching, Xero turned to spycraft, joining the Tequilo Diplomatic Corps, and secretly the Academy for International Relations where he became an AIR agent, specialising in Psychological Operations. Most people in polite company dare not ask what that meant and it was many years before Xero chose to shed any light on the matter, long after he had retired, when his role was alluded to in the biography of a former President under whom he served.

"It was more like marketing," he claimed, when pressed to come clean on what he had been doing all those years after torturing opposition defences with his cunning trickery. Long since retired, he prefers to cultivate apple trees and prune roses these days.

"It was often cunning trickery, yes, but to be clear, nothing at all like torture," he said, secateurs snipping away with a vengeful efficiency.

Missed parts 1-6? It wouldn't be much of a trace and track service if 85.7% of all known parts ended up 'whereabouts unknown', now would it? What kind of a trace and track service would that be? Never fear, the Cross Referencing Department at GOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLa!!! are here to help, with some handy links for those of you who want to catch up on your Tequilo superstars. For those of you that prefer a TL;DR version - we've got you covered too.

A great big lump of a defender who also scored goals at a comparable rate to many half-decent strikers? That would be footballer, champion wrestler, award-winning circus impresario and critically-acclaimed comedy actor Humberto Bustamante, who also formed his own football club, Humberto.

What about someone who'll question your very reason for being in the breakdown lane of the Teneboros Rápido? Just call fractious philosopher-defender Díscolo, a steamroller centre-half who nowadays drives one on motorway repair crews. He once had a smash hit book, Xen and The Art of Motorway Maintenance.

He's been here long enough to get a passport if he wants, and who would deny him? Farv immigrant Râmón Tüjânger, The King of Cooperativa who captained a modest club of the city of Quetodino to a record-equalling four consecutive Ocotapa state championships. May as well give him the shirt - they haven't even heard of him back home in Rüûúùũǔūṹʉůlandiåâäáàǎȁạȧ.

Want to inject a little bit of magic into your line-up? Look no further than legendary Fábrica striker Pablo Invocador who was often sanctioned for using shamanistic confusónism to better his game, including being sent off for making an unfortunate goalkeeper stand on his head when he faced Pablo for a vital penalty.

How about the greatest Tequiloan player of all time, according to just about every Tequiloan: Lepe. He played with a jackdaw feather in his jockstrap for good luck, and it certainly seemed like it worked. As the top man in his later career, he headed the Unión (that's the Tequiloan FA to you and me) and founded Liga-TQ; but we don't talk about The Outbreak and how it all went wrong for him in Gibberwilde.

Finally, we had to get a special visitor pass to track down Correcamino's favourite criminally-gifted playmaker Xuilo 'The Robber' Tlalqui, who currently resides in the Guastenango state penitentiary for his poor life choices and that badly-planned visit to Banque Sept-Nat in Yaya city. He's good at breeding worms.

One we definitely wouldn't include is Xürnô Tzâmbá, who was a world-beater on the football sim game Maximó and got everyone excited about the real life prospect. Turned out, that was a computer error - he wasn’t the world beater from Maximó-102, -103 and -104. He was just a dustman from Ibaeta with two left feet.

There, all caught up. Only four more All-Stars to complete the set of XI. We'll have to get out of the Eagle's Cup group stage for that to happen.

LETTERS OF THE WEEK
When it needs saying and you're not afraid to say it...

Good morning everyone. We have letters! And goodness me but Chelsea Refrain has got you scribbling away...

Regular correspondent Rùben Curto of Chanco Cóndor wants to remind us of a time, a few years ago, when poor Jaïr Iscla was become the focus of great loathing in an extremist rogue nation out in the barbarian wilds of Rushmore: "I see we face those pink devils in the Eagle's Cup - I sort of thought it was supposed to be a friendly affair but, well, you know... I wonder if they still loathe the Tequiloa over in Cassadaigua?"

Calm and helpful (but quite surprised) Aurora Pozo probably has the answer to that: "Have you seen the hysteria in the Concord Heights Times [a 25-centivo tabloid often used to wrap greasy fish y chips of a Friday evening - Ed.]? I was quite surprised - they really still do loathe the Tequiloa in Cassadaigua, don't they! I've never met a D'guana myself, which I suppose I should be grateful for since they do seem to have deep-set prejudices which would make conversation rather... awkward."

Ponce de Gluon tends to agree: "Coach Juan Manuel needs to look out for their diving and unsportswomanlike conduct; as I recall, they subjected our young players to such misandry that poor Jaïr Iscla got sent off for retaliation and then was subject to online abuse for months afterward. Let's make sure we don't fall for those canny tricks again."

Moto ultra Dolores de Silva, of Dolores, is keen to dispense some wisdom on the matter: "You can have all the trophies in the cabinet but it stands for nowt if you cheated to get them - that's just stained silverware. As my mother always said, 'tarnish takes the gloss off' - I'm not sure what she means, but she's right."

Martín Costello of Arca Nueva just hopes poor Jaïr Iscla isn't feeling too nervous about the coming encounter: "Poor Jaïr Iscla, I fear he's going to get it in the neck again from those cyber-terrorists from Concord Heights. Hopefully a win will be all the therapy he needs."

Finally, Llàzaro Baró of Ciura wants to strike a calming tone: "I imagine you have lots of angry letters about those matronising Casserolés and I just want to appeal for calm; after all, it's not like they are elves or something. Don't get me wrong, my best friend is a goblin but -" ...and the rest of it is probably not worth the trouble to publish, for one reason or another. He'd just like to say that we should be more understanding of people with culturally different perspectives on life, the universe and everything. And pitxi. And fun. And all that. He did also wonder how many actual champions were playing in the regional confederations group - we're going with three out of four, Llàzaro.

Should we change the subject before it gets too heated? Minerva Neptune, a Boneswoman of the good ship HMS Wednesday Afternoon presently docked in Ciuredor, takes time out of her busy day in the crows nest to send us a message in a bottle: "I think you should include cheeky Spittalninny Mosey Ackanard in your national All-Stars team. I know he's not a Tequiloan, but if you can pick a Farv, you could just as easily throw in a splendid Bonesman." - It's almost as if you've read the draft for Trace & Track Part 8, Minerva.

Zwangzug actually do have some experience picking an all-time team--shortly before their return in World Cup 64, they "participated" in the Babbagian World Cup of Dreams, inasmuch as that qualifies as a historical event rather than a shared dream. But that only consisted of our "first generation" all-stars, and we've had a couple generations come and go since then, so let's see what happens!

Over its lengthy history, Zwangzug has seven World Cup Hall of Fame players, and they could form the core of a plausible team:

Defense: Andrew Card, Sydney Stefred
Midfield: Eddie Barnes, Patricia Eliot, Lucas Kukiseso, Martina Ruan
Attack: Simon Ryne Olson

This is good! A midfield of Barnes, Eliot, Kukiseso, and Ruan is a match for most of the multiverse. Maybe not most of the sides that participate in a competition like the Eagles Cup, but most other teams. Now all we need to do is select four more players.

In practice how this would play out is: Lucas declares himself in charge of comparing contemporary and bygone players, because the bygone players have no knowledge of his era-mates, and Sydney thinks this whole exercise is a stupid bleeping waste of time. The "second-generation" team didn't amount to a whole lot, and they probably don't need more representation than Martina and Patricia. Correctly remembering that the first-generation had a lot of prolific strikers because people really tended to specialize/not have a clue what they were doing then, Lucas decides to choose a defender from his own time who stands out even in this competitive, diverse era, in Martin Scallop. Martin is happy to have an occasion to ramble about how comparing defender skill is an art, not a science, you can't just count goals, yada yada. (Yes, we now have a Martin and a Martina. It's a good old name, they get along well. It's fine.)

Martin points out that this is an Eagles Cup event, and it would be nice to have one of the players who actually won an Eagles Cup. The only problem is that the Eagles Cup 6 team really fits in between the "second" and "third" generations--they weren't around for WCC football. Nevertheless, Lucas agrees to call up Ogechi Guttuso. This midfield is now stacked. They'll probably play the classic "X"; Eddie is a little out of position in the center, but he's talented, he'll deal with it.

Andrew and Sydney, both difficult personalities, have hit it off surprisingly well; they share similar opinions about "this hypothetical is probably a waste of time" and "even if there aren't many of us defenders, we'll just play defensively, jeez, that's our job." It's about now that Lucas suggests they need to find a goalkeeper. Andrew protests that this is a stupid bleeping idea, we'll just go with the 3-2-1-2-3 like the good old days. Lucas insists that we will not, in fact, do that. Andrew is unimpressed by his descriptions of the "modern" Zwangzug, this is probably all a bad dream anyway. Just when the impasse peaks, another figure from the past shows up. It's Saena Mathash!--but the elderly figure who's seen as an honorary grandmother to the newer generations, not the wunderkind who dazzled briefly as a player. She pulls Andrew aside for a chat. He emerges shaken, but willing to go along with Lucas' ideas about legality.

It turns out nobody has strong opinions on who the second striker should be, or if they even need one; the modern players are used to playing with one (or zero!) forwards. Eventually Peter Vanderpent emerges as a consensus choice, we felt like we needed some CMSC representation in here. Martin calls upon Joel McJakill, his clubmate from Keppal Cosmos, to be the goalie; Joel gives a longsuffering look of "why is it always me" but agrees. Bring on the world!

The teenager tried his damnedest to keep Penniton United up last season. It didn't quite pan out for the Pennies, but Sveyn's excellent shot-stopping abilities earned him a second chance in the Prem with Secklow. Shone between the sticks at DBC50.

The enthusiasm of youth, forged into steel in the crucible of playing for one of the nation's top clubs. Snelders is an all-round threat very much in the mould of Cormac O'Neill; the Eagle's Cup gives him the opportunity to steal his place in the national team.

First name Jesus, last name translates to cross. We'd make a joke here but we'd be crucified if we did. Lives up to his surname, at least, by being an excellent crosser of the ball.

Selhurst like to cut inside, drawing full-backs out of the play and creating space for his team-mates. Has a tendency to hang on to the ball longer than is needed, but there again is excellent in the dribble.

Missed out on the Di Bradini Cup team due to a hamstring injury, but with the opportunity to run the rule over him, Paul Davis has decided to call up the promising youngster. An intelligent ball-player, if not the quickest in his position.

Broke through last season in Casuals' title-winning campaign. Reeder plays the game almost on instinct, looking to find space and run at defenders at every opportunity. A real headache to play against. Was expected to be a fixture at Coalfields for years, but the Owls made Casuals an offer they couldn't refuse. Also, Krytenians do like a trip to Yeaddin...

Cultured midfielder with a sizeable box of tricks. So unpredictable, sometimes even his Saints team-mates are confused. Likely to be used when Davis gets especially experimental. Or desperate. Delete as applicable.

English may not be his first language - in fact, it's his third, behind Welsh and goals. Prodigious young talent, oddly spelt but familiar name. Has lived up to his price tag at the Cygnus thus far, but will be hoping to set that bar even higher.

The "Weekend Warrior" has regained his place in the Dragons squad for the Eagle's Cup. Got his head down after drifting out of the twenty-three prior to the AOCAF Cup; knuckling down for CSKA hasn't hurt his prospects either.

Club: Caledon Simpson
An absolute thunderbolt of a left foot, beware Ellison from range. Caledon may not be the most glamorous of clubs, but fewer opportunities to score has just translated to the youngster making sure he makes the most of what he does get. Hoping to cement his place in the traditionally hard to fill position of left centre forward.

Cande MONTALBAN

Position: Forward
Club: Avidia City
If City can hold on to the lad, they'll be doing well. Montalban could be the answer to Krytenia's left-side problem up front - if it doesn't work for Ellison, anyway.

Alex MEITNER

Sampson, Parsons, Vinelli, and now Meitner; Krytenia seems to be developing a stock in trade of strikers called Alexander. Frippery aside, the Casuals striker is the opportunistic finisher at the spearhead of the Miners' young core.

Ciaran RAFFERTY

Position: Forward
Club: Emberton Hibernians
One of the main reasons that Hibs made it to the top flight is this young man's predatory instinct. A clinical finisher, give him a sight of goal and he'll more than likely score. Scored for fun alongside Montalban at the Di Bradini Cup, but now has the tricky task of trying to extricate Alun Belmwr from his place in the first team.

Back around the time of World Cup 73, a unique match took place to celebrate the nation's one thousandth international match. A game between dream simulacra of the best Krytenia, up to that point, had ever had to offer, versus a Multiverse XI hand-picked by Juan Tzimisces himself. Since then, Krytenia may not have had prolonged success, but have crucially done something no Dragons team had done up to that point; won silverware. So the question is this: how do the modern era Krytenians compare to that "All-Time" team?

GOALKEEPER

The All-Time Team had an embarrassment of riches to choose from between the sticks. If there's one thing Krytenia is famous for, it's producing great goalkeepers. James Barcali, Alan Keys, Juan Garcia, Choi An-Sun...the list goes on. First on that list, though, and first on the All-Time teamsheet, was Adam Vernazza. Debuting in World Cup XVI, his shot-stopping ability helped carry the inexperienced Krytenians to their first ever finals, and would go on to collect over ninety international caps. His stint at Morales Blacks in Melmond also saw him become the first of his countrymen to make a living abroad in the sport.

For the modern Dragons, the conveyor belt has continued to run. Devon Williams picked up an AOCAF winner's medal, whilst Damien Carpenter was first choice in the team that won the Cup of Harmony; indeed, it was his performance in the final's penalty shoot-out that secured that team's place in the history books. It would have been tempting to choose him solely on that performance. To do so, though, would be a disservice to the man who helped usher in the new era of Krytenian football. David Heaton was charged with stopping what many expected to be an inevitable onslaught when the team returned to international competition. Not so. Heaton was a solid rock on which a tenacious defence built its castle, and the Dragons somehow managed not only to make it to the finals, but to push the eternal heavyweights of Valanora to extra time in the second round.

Heaton's heroics, therefore, earn him a deserved place in history; when it comes to a direct choice between the two, however, it's hard to look past Vernazza's role as progenitor of the position. Without him, there is no Heaton, simple as.

WINNER: Adam Vernazza (All-Time)

DEFENCE

We've mentioned that Krytenia has produced some top-notch goalkeepers down the years; arguably, that might be because the defence tends to be a little...lightweight. Kohev Kuengas-Vaga these guys are not. Names like Zack Starkov and Travis Westhuizen aren't exactly ones that trip off the tongue of the average Krytenian when it comes to the names of great national team players. Saffron Lines is legitimately the best female player that Krytenia have ever had, with a couple of World Cup bronzes on the mantelpiece, whilst given the tragedy of World Cup 57, when his ancestral homeland was reduced to flaming radioactive waste, it's possible Colm Ó Riordan got in the All-Time XI on the sympathy vote.

Is it something that has improved in the modern era? Well, yes and no. Krytenia have experimented with three at the back - that didn't work, if we're honest - and have never looked truly comfortable off the ball. That said, there are players who have at least given a good account of themselves in their position at the back. Sam Barcali is the best of a kinda meh bunch at right-back, whilst Mitchell Mitchell on the opposite side was as reliable as his parents were unimaginative. In the middle, things have been a little better, with top-class talents like Jason Davis and Rob Adams missing out; in the end, the combination of reliability and longevity led us to plump for the combination of AOCAF Cup winner Alfie Xousa and Cup of Harmony winning captain Ross Green. Sadly for the latter, someone has to miss out to the incomparable Lines, and the way his game collapsed as World Cup 87 qualifying went on means he's the one to make way.

MIDFIELD

Druida may have been the pioneers of System Hisisim, the midfield-dominant passing game that put a premium on possession and quick movement of the ball, but arguably it's Krytenia who gave it the finesse the current side is famous for. System Munitis, working off a central midfield fulcrum and a free-roaming attacking midfielder, was feared in its day, and though the game has moved on and Krytenia have drifted towards a more conventional 4-3-3, that principle remains. As such, some of the country's greatest players have made their name marauding around the centre of the park. Names that missed out on the All-Time first team, such as Dave van Staveren, Andy Tay, Cecil Poldov, Chris Lydersen...all of them could walk into the first eleven of a whole bunch of international sides in any era. The four that did get picked, then, you can be assured were very much the cream of the crop. Take Tejai, for instance. Not only was he an excellent left midfielder, but the guy almost started a war. Against the backdrop of the highest-ever tensions between Krytenia and Starblaydia, Tejai scored the controversial winner when they met in the quarter-final of World Cup 29. Anyone whose effigy gets strung up and burned in the middle of Jhanna is clearly OK in our books. Warren Kennedy-Worthington, meanwhile, had the silky ball skills to be expected from a member of the famed Kennedy dynasty, albeit a sub-branch; perhaps that's why he played right wing for Avidia United rather than striker for Stanton. Add in the ever-reliable Ricky Sexton, the rock at the centre of Ousevale Borough's imperial period, and the Showman himself, the breathtaking Kiefer Lloyd, and you have a formidable midfield that the modern era surely has no hope of emulating. Right?

Well, let's not be too hasty. System Munitis still had plenty of legs up until the Jaffacake-Phillips era, and there are plenty who made a name for themselves in that time period. It's perhaps a little too soon to consider Cormac O'Neill in this context - he feels he's not done playing yet, even though Paul Davis is exploring other avenues in the Eagle's Cup - whilst Joshua Kelnic is also still active if not selected, so he's also discounted. Jaime Verdano was almost picked - you may remember him for standing up to Valrauncion and helping hasten his exit from the national team and the country itself - but in the end we decided to look elsewhere. Marco Angelo started the modern trend for ridiculously skillful avides (Hispanic) players which continues to this day (at least if Cande Montalban's Di Bradini Cup performances are a sign of things to come), and it was he who captained the Dragons to their first major trophy in the form of the AOCAF Cup. Whether Adrian Anuzzi ever lived up to his tag of "the new Kiefer Lloyd" is up for debate; what can't be denied though, is that he was electric every time he pulled on the national team jersey. Samuel Alinas came through into the first eleven back in World Cup 72 after Craig Grasmere's implosion and never looked back; he edges Verdano out in a tough call for central midfield. Where there was no debate, though, is in attacking midfield. Seb McAllister and Darren Radcliffe may have been serviceable, but there's no touching the exquisite skills of Armando Ortega.

Picking a favourite in each position is like picking your favourite child. Anuzzi, sadly, misses out partly because of that millstone of a tag, and partly because trolling the Men in Mauve is essentially our national pastime. Ricky Sexton is potentially the best holding midfielder we've ever had, Marco Angelo is the model of a modern avides, which just leaves attacking mid. Honestly, if there was a choice, we'd have both and just go three at the back, but sadly we can't. Instead, we'll go for Ortega. Lloyd may have had the higher ceiling, but he had a tendency to go missing for portions of a match; Ortega, meanwhile, lacked that particular failing.

WINNERS: Marco Angelo (Modern), Ricky Sexton (All-Time), Tejai (All-Time); Armando Ortega (Modern)

STRIKERS

We can't mention Krytenian strikers without saying one word: KENNEDY. The family are a never-ending conveyor belt of top-quality strikers, and have produced five guys (hold the burgers and fries) who have pulled on the shirt of both the Dockers and the Dragons. First on the list is the one who made it into the side; Gabriel Kennedy. To this day, he's still one of the most recognised names in Krytenian football; the fact his legacy has been continued by descendants Raphael, Uriel, Zachariel and most recently Selaphiel helps on that front, too. Overlooked for the other spot on the All-Time team include the Permed One himself, Colin Ulvæus, the prolific Jermaine Orange, and other great names such as Phillip Neasden, Darren Scotland, Damon Parker, and Ian Betts. Valrauncion was excepted as he was still playing at the time. Instead, it was Krytenian football's first true "face", Ari Smith, who was selected. Smith was, until Kennedy (G) came along, the benchmark by which all Krytenian forwards were judged. Almost three centuries later, he's still revered and respected for helping to establish the Dragons on the international scene.

The modern era has also produced its fair share of goalscorers. Of course, Neil Smith and Alun Belmwr aren't up for inclusion as they're still active, whilst Valrauncion's sacking and subsequent scurrying back to the milky teat of the SFA means he's disqualified on general principle. That doesn't weaken the pool, though. Kennedy (S) has done the family legacy proud, whilst David Holzmann and Charlie Sammels are forgotten gems. Truth be told, though, there are two standout candidates. Ronnie van Rijn managed to outshine The Cock himself - no mean feat given that Valrauncion's ego has its own postcode - and his goals proved crucial in re-establishing the sky blue as a force to be reckoned with. He's also a cult figure in Farfadillis; so much so, in fact, that his name may as well be "Ronnie van Rijn of Avenida Victoria" as even now, over half a century later, the two seem inextricably linked. His retirement from international football could have left a huge hole to fill; thankfully, though, there was a ready-made replacement waiting in the wings in the form of Alexander Sampson. The Ousevale frontman stepped into van Rijn's shoes and proceeded to tap-dance all over opposition defences with them, picking up an AOCAF Cup winner's medal into the bargain. He would later manage the team, gaining the distinction of being the only Krytenian manager to take charge of the nation at half-time, hastening That Bloody Elf's firing in that (in)famous match against Garifunya. Clearly, he's a national hero twice over by this point.

Sadly, four into two doesn't go, which means there's a couple of big names missing out. Smith may be the benchmark from the early years, but it's a benchmark that has been surpassed by the other names on the list. On the other hand, Gabe has to be in because it just isn't a Krytenian team without a Kennedy in there somewhere. That leaves a choice between Sampson and RVR...and who are we to deny a man who is a cult figure on both sides of Atlantian Oceania?

An all-time XI is a little redundant for Græntfjall given how recently it has begun competing in international football. One member of the team’s first ever squad recently competed in the Di Bradini Cup! But in the spirit of playing along…

Goalkeeper: Alexander Leonardsson

There’s little doubt here. Until he suffered a knee injury during CoH78, Alexander had played every single minute of international football in Græntfjall’s national team history. And done it pretty well: never the most elegant of keepers and lacking the ability of some foreign stars to ‘play it out from the back’, his strong leadership and tactical senses helped him preserve a good record. Only thrice in his career did he concede 3+ goals in a competitive international; his records of 15 career clean sheets and 5 clean sheets in a row have yet to be beaten. Since his injury – which ultimately proved career-ending – goalkeeper has become a revolving door position of instability and uncertainty for Græntfjall.

Fullbacks: Emeli Vilbertsdóttir and Karoline Vernerisdóttir

The silliness of an all-time XI when one of them is in this squad and is just 26 – but as we’ll see below, it gets sillier. And Emeli is the more sensible selection! Her omission from the Copa Rushmori squad was a shock and a gamble that didn’t really work; it turns out it really doesn’t matter what defensive formation the Snow Wolves use, they’ll still lose to Nephara in the Round of 16. Emeli is probably most infamous for being sent home from the Cup of Harmony in Sylestone after being accused of sexual impropriety with a sapient trouser press (to this day, she swears she was just trying to iron her dress) but she’s a very consistent defender otherwise. The right-back position has been a turbulent one for Græntfjall and has seen Else Svennsdóttir – the first Græntfjaller to play in Nephara, though she ultimately went down with her team and missed out on the Zenith – and Elektra Lúthersdóttir both earn significant playing time. But when the team needed her most – with qualification for the playoffs at the end of World Cup 87 qualifying looming – it was Karoline Vernerisdóttir they called up out of soft retirement; she’d stepped away from the team to spend more time with her wife during the last Eagle’s Cup, earning the selectors’ ire, but she came back in their hour of need.

Centerbacks: Ralf Álfarsson and Vilbjörn Hjörleifursson

The two men who introduced the concept of the “BFG” to the world, Ralf and Vilbjörn led Græntfjall to their first (and only) title, the Baptism of Fire. Both served as elected national captains on many occasions; Vilbjörn during the BoF triumph, Ralf subsequently once his old friend had retired. Both had the misfortune to only get a couple of years in blue-and-white, the bulk of their playing careers having taken place before Græntfjall began playing internationally. In future years there are hopes there’ll be some competition here, especially from current GPL MVP Hjörleifur Reynarsson, but it’s hard to argue with the two big men who brought home some silverware for the very first time. Especially as no one else has managed it since.

Defensive midfielder: Kalle Bjørnsson

Chiefly infamous for his “stonks” ban, Kalle is a surprising choice given how infrequently he’s actually started. Instead, he was for several years the go-to super-sub, always brought on once the team had a lead to shut down any attempt at an opposition fightback. His unique combination of a total lack of footballing skill and a dedication to caveman brutality has made him a crowd favorite in one of the few countries that could possibly celebrate such a player, and his impact is perhaps best demonstrated by what happened once he was banned: Græntfjall drew matches they needed to win and ended up missing out on World Cup qualifying. He’s definitely here more as a cult hero than a true footballing selection, though.

Left wing: Hlégestur Snæþórsson

When Græntfjall first burst onto the scene, they had three strong young players: Jason, Amanda – and Matthias Raphaelsson. And of the three, it was Matthias who impressed most while the others flopped. He was the team’s best player at their first Copa Rushmori. Today? He’s nowhere near the national team, despite only being in his 20s. He was usurped by Hlégestur thanks to the situation where the Baptism of Fire coincided with the Olympics: Matthias was young enough to compete at the Olympics, Hlégi wasn’t, and a star was born. Sort of. Hlégestur has been a mercurial presence with injuries and inconsistent performances; he missed a game during the BoF with stomach cramps later revealed to have been caused by gorging on whalemeat slaughtered by his own hand, and he has the most red cards of any NT player in history. But he played a crucial role in the BoF campaign and 2 nearly-but WC qualifying campaigns since.

Right wing: Bríana Noahsdóttir

Another of that crop of bright young players who’s since lost their way, Bríana is no longer a NT starter. She was however the team’s best player at their second Copa Rushmori and has scored a couple of “best goal ever” contenders from free-kicks, though even that role has largely been supplanted by Amanda and Hanne. Her limited skill set, not being tall or fast, was largely about her accurate crossing to Græntfjall’s many large bodied target men, but that wasn’t enough on its own to make up for her lack of pace compared to Lana. She’s still on the NT fringes, but is likely to be used more as an impact sub in situations where set piece specialists are at a premium.

Central midfield: Hrærekur Jvarsson

While Ralf and Kalle may be the names that come to mind with respect to BFGs, Hrærekur is the one who proved they could do more than tackle and throw their bodies. He’s Græntfjall’s all-time most-capped player, was the leading scorer during the Baptism of Fire, has captained them more often than anyone else and since the appointment of a foreign manager been the de facto regular captain. And he’s done it all despite no one giving much thought to his skill level. Hurtling box-to-box for 90 minutes, his incredible combination of size, strength, fitness, and resilience has been the hallmark of the effort-rich, skill-poor Snow Wolves sides. Advancing in years – he missed the most recent Copa Rushmori injured – he will undoubtedly retire a legend and could well still be on this list even when it’s redone after a more suitable period of reflection.

Attacking midfield: Amanda Guttisdóttir

Amanda Guttisdóttir had to be included on this list, but the truth is the first few years of her international career were deeply disappointing. Only recently has she started to prove what she’s about, and she was the team’s MVP during the WC87 campaign and lead scorer for the team at CoH79. Until then, the criticism was she was too small to be capable of playing in central midfield against top defenders. She seems to have flourished in the tactical change that’s promoted her to an attacking midfield role. Græntfjallers fervently believe she is their one truly skilful player who can go up against the world’s best. The world’s best ain’t so sure.

Striker: Jason Þórhallursson

Because, duh. The country’s all-time leading goalscorer recently attracted a national record eight figures in the transfer market. His performances at international level have been mercurial: terrible at the first two Copa Rushmoris he played in but much improved at the third – to no noticeable change in end result; a damp squib at the Olympics but flown in just in time to score a match-winning hat-trick in the BoF final; the team’s MVP through WC86 qualifying but not quite able to push them over the line in two games where a goal was all they needed two years later. Had the occasional magical touch; had quite a lot of brute force muscles to score tap-ins, too. Frustrating, maddening. But, as ever, impossible to avoid.

What a concept! Chromatik Football has been around since World Cup 73, only having missed one cycle. In that time, Chromatika has made it to one WC fourth placed finish and two AOCAF finals, having won one of them and lost another. In that time, who have been the best players playin gin the Black and White?

Jillian Nier (WC 76 - WC 83) - 86 Caps, 125 Goals allowed
Mia Ria (WC 76 - WC 87) - 85 Caps, 120 Goals allowed

After Nikolai Thorben abruptly left with the Sunrisians, Jillian Nier finally won the duel between the two keepers. She was part of the Anomalies for eight cycles, being part of the team that won the only AOCAF ever by the squad and always being the even-keeled rock that they could rely on. Mia Ria? Only on the team for twelve cycles, finally giving up the #1 spot after the last cycle. She was small but mighty, always a part of the mix. Excelsior!

Severin Ilya (WC 73 - WC 79) - 76 Caps

Morningstar remains the stereotypical right back - imposing, composed, unnerved. The one-time Sabrefell Athletic right back anchored the back line for many a cycle, now leading Urrheddiao after her own image. Severin Ilya was the first enforcer of the Anomalies back in the days when they ran a 5-3-2.

Henri de Aea (WC 80 - WC 87) - 101 Caps, 3 Goals

The first captain in Chromatik history who started the Rainbow Revolution by his very existence, Luuk Aart led by example and wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty. Henri de Aea has been on the radar since his teens and remain the key cog of the Chromatik backfield in this present day.

Aysu Damjana (WC 75 - WC 84) - 111 Caps, 1 Goal

Zlastica Ellen was physical, large, and rather looming; Aysu Damjana was more of a forward-pressing left back who knew how to use all of her space. Both of them are well deserving here.

Right Midfielder/Right Winger:
Kaytlyn Victoriane (WC 77 - WC 86) - 155 Caps, 92 Goals
Meagan Kelly (WC 73 - WC 80) - 143 Caps, 20 Goals

Victorine is a former Galcticos player of the year. Enough said. Kelly was the fast speedster who overcame her height and blew past everyone else.

Just how much further could Antonio have gone if she hadn't retired to pursue having a family? We'll never know. Jazmin of Myana, Brinemouth, then Myana again was a well traveled key cog to many of the Anomalies' triumphs.
