The stars are soaked with blood.
The Age of Gold has slipped by.
The Age of Silver is now tarnished.
Now is the Age of Iron.

The Stars Blood Red
A science fantasy mecha RP set in a Neo-fudal far future.
IC
Co:Op Insaeldor

For nearly a thousand years mankind has been lorded over by the Celestial Emperors of Earth. From there glittering spires upon the cradle of mankind they have ruled, for many there rule has been and age of wealth, progress and stability. But all is not well within the Empire, the heart of the empire has grown decedent. Wealth and power has grown a generation of weak emperors, more interested in idly spending there time in gardens or carnal pleasures than ruling an empire. In there lack of rule has risen a new class of nobility. Men and women who rule through the power of iron and blood, piloting the deified personifications of death. There great war machines stride upon the battlefield of this crumbling age, a new symbol of a new age.

The age of gold was stripped away, the age of silver has tarnished, now is a time of iron, where blood will flow and the currency of power will be men lives. This is an age where the fate of mankind will be decided. Will someone rise up to claim the Celestial Crown of Earth and restore the glory of the Empire? Or is this age doomed to turn to rust and decay?

What is this?

Simply put this RP is set in the dying age of an interstellar empire. Years of inactive rule from the emperors on Old Earth have lead the Empires once robust bureaucracy to stagnate and grow to large to support itself, enterprising men and women have slowly over the last few centuries rose to the top, the head of noble houses that in theory answer to the emperor. To secure there power these nobles use the power of great war machines built in past ages, to have power in this age is to be a mech pilot. You will be one of these pilots, either attached to a noble house or cruising the stars as a mech for hire.

Whatever happens after that is up to you. Weather you will become the next emperor and lead mankind in a new direction or die trying, or perhaps your will become one of the new warlords or a new dark age. The choice is up to you.

An Empire Rotting

It is no lie that the Empire is starting its death spiral. Internally it is a mess. The remains of the old Imperial bureaucracy struggle with religious orders, errant knights and noble houses for power, the Emperor spends more time in his Venusian gardens than attending to the affairs of state and the outer rim remains a neglected backwater. The corruption gets worse the closer to the Throne World you come. Nobles take more interest in there own petty squabbles, the Imperial army stands helpless as noble houses settle there feuds with the stamping feet of mechs and the thundering roar of auto guns, its self often under the command of the local nobility rather than any central authority.

Than we come to the rotten core of this festering edifice, Earth. An entire world given over to the running of an empire and it cant even run itself. Gangs run the streets and the rich get away with murder by putting credits in the right hands. On a world with streets paved in gold the poor starve in the streets. Within the halls of the Imperial Palace the nobles of Sol scheme and plot to advance there own power and the Emperor sits, his mind distracted with the comforts of power but not in its practice.

A figure head in an age that needs a leader. Emperor Antony Abel IV of House Vath has ruled for 25 years, each of those years spent getting ever more hedonistic. The Imperial Court meets more in the gardens of Venus than the Palace of earth as the Emperor prefers the business of wine, food, and women than the business of his empire. But his time upon the mortal plane is nearing its end, at the age of 67 the emperor is nearing a premature death, weather it is poison or the effects of a lifetime of debauchery one cannot tell. But Emperor Antony is dying.

The succession is secure, however the Crown Prince is not much better than the Emperor himself. A vain, petty and selfish man Maximus Vath has neither the will nor the desire to rule, more content to let other do the work for him while he provides a stamp of approval. For the nobles of Sol, this a time ti rise into greater power, should one of them become the force behind the throne they will be the master of man.

The Eastern Threat

To the galactic east upon the fringe of human space a second threat is rising. A great horde of xenos races has untied together and has begun an invasion of the Empire. With Earth seemingly deaf to the cries of help from the fringe it is up to the frontiersmen of the East to defend themselves. With laser rifle, rail gun and mech the peoples of the fringe have held the line thrice of the last twenty years. But worse is yet to come.

Days after the emperor took to his chambers ill a massive fleet of xenos, lead by the fearsome Phrixapear, entered the Juliot Sector, taking twenty worlds and enslaving billions of humans. Calls for aid have gone out to all corners of the Empire, noble houses have mustered there forces, holy orders are giving battler sermons to the faithful and the war against the Phrixapear is about to begin, with or without the Emperor even knowing his realm is at war.

A Time of Uncertainty

Will the empire fall to alien invaders? Or will humanity stand against the tide once more? Will the Emperor become just a puppet to a noble? Or will the power struggle on Earth lead to open war? Or perhaps none of the Sol nobility will achieve there aims, but some other player out in the wider empire will take the reigns of power for himself?

What is certain is that these are dangerous times. Times of trial and tribulation. A time where all of humanity is tested. The current rulers of man will not stand to these coming times, this is the end of there age and a beginning of a new. These are times that forge great heroes and strong leaders, but it is still unknown if even great heroes will be able to rise to the power needed to lead mankind out of its own doom.

A Word on Mechs

Mechs are as much symbols as they are tools of war. A mech is power, security and the right to rule over other men. For as many worlds there are in the Empire there are mech designs. That is to say that you as the player are free to chose what your mechs look like and can do within reason. But there are some things I would like to talk about first before you scour the internet for your favorite mech designs.

• There are two classifications of mechs in the RP. Mechanical and Bioform. Mechanical are your standard mech fair, metal and hydraulics, a giant robot bristling with weapons piloted by a single occupant. Bioforms are different. Amalgamations of bio-engineered flesh and cybernetics, the pilot acts as a central nervous system for the Bioform. Further more a Bioform is unique to the individual pilot, gene coded to them, making it impossible for another pilot to use there mech.
• Your mech is symbol of noble power. Mech pilot and noble titles are one and the same, to be a pilot of a mech is to be the scion of a proud and noble linage. It is possible that your machine was used by your forefathers and bears the marks of previous masters.
• All mechs are subject to my preference, if I don't like what you have your mech capable off, armed with or whatever I will ask you to change it.
Noble Titles within the Empire

The Empire is rapidly turning into a feudalistic society, as the burden of government grows to heavy for the throne and power is split amongst smaller and smaller groups a system of noble titles has taken root. Note that this is not a complete list of noble titles. Just as there is a mech for every planet there is a title for every world. This is to give you a rough idea of the titles and how the rank with each other in the Empire.

• Knight: The lowest title one can hold. This title is what grants you the right to use a mech. Knights may be landed, holding parcels of a planets land or an orbital station. Unlanded knights are often called Questing or Errant Knights as they travel the cosmos seeking recognition and possibly a lord ship.
• Lord: Lords hold land. Sometimes this is just a single moon and a few mining stations or an entire planet. Lords often have several knights that they have granted land to that serve as commanders and retinue.
• Duke: Dukes hold sway over several planetary systems, with lords and knight under them they represent the middle tier of power in the Empire.
• Suzerain: The rulers of massive domains, these nobles are some of the most powerful people in the galaxy, commander several sectors of space. The title used to be a special assignment given to someone directly by the Emperor and was never a hereditary title. However, it now represents the second highest tier of hereditary power in the Empire.
• The Emperor rests at the top of noble ladder. However the Emperors power currently barley extends over his own house. Mars and Venus act as independent nations in an of themselves, Jupiter is a representation of the Empire in miniature, the Jovian moons each ruled over by a Lorldy House with the Jovian Duke ruling inefactivaly for Ganamede.

Its is possible that one person hold multiple titles. A duke may lord over several planets by himself, as well as being a knight, a Suzerain might also hold several title of duke. Keep in mind I have ultimate say in how you stack titles. If you app as just an errant knight you probably wont get looked at to hard.

hmmm, this is definitely interesting.

Does the emperor have bodyguards? I might have an idea for a character for that role.

So you got normal mechs and Eva mechs with organic stuff?

Where does the fantasy factor into this? Can I cast magic through my 40mm auto cannon?

Fascinating... I really shouldn’t be signing up for another RP when I’m already struggling to keep up with the ones I’m already in, but this is just so interesting.

Perhaps later when I have time...

WIP
This is far from done, I'm just tired because it's 3 AM. More to come.

The Imperial Registry

Name: Iona Ashcrown II
House: Ashcrown
Age: 34
Personality: To those beyond the borders of the Far Systems, the names “Iona Ashcrown”, the “Bloody Queen of the North”, and quite popularly “The Ash Bitch” lend themselves to a trail of blood spread from system to system, sector to sector, the edge of a plasma blade and the thrum of a PPC allowing for no resistance.
Within the comfort of her own (quite large) home, however, stories have long since become commonplace of spotting the Ash Queen in a random bar or club, hair down and half a dozen drinks in - though the office of the Suzerain will never admit to it officially.
Appearance:
Image

Personal History:

Titles:
Suzerain of the Far Systems (“Far North”, as much as that means anything in space)
Grand Duchess of Asha Sector, the (unofficial) Core of the Far Systems
Duchess of Lenta Sector, won at the Battle of Mila VI
Lord of Sappho II, also known as Phosa
Holdings:
Heraldry:

Holding History:

Mech Appearance:
Image

Mech Type: Mechanical
Weapons/Systems Info:
Close Range:
Caltek O-55 Plasma Claymore: Guns have gotten bigger and bigger over the centuries, but even still nothing can beat a big ol’ (burning hot) sword. This thing will chop through light plating easily, and even stronger mechs can’t easily take a solid hit. Best to stay out of range while this is in play.

Kinetic Weaponry:
2x Minila PAK-10 Particle Projection Cannons (PPC): Gaussian projectile acceleration has long since evolved to the point that gunpowder is an inefficient ancient relic at best. If you’re unarmored, don’t get hit by a single one of these things, or you’re basically toast. Oh, and it’s rapid-fire.

2x Minila PAK-5 Auxiliary Particle Projection Cannons (PPC): The smaller, side-mounted little brothers of the PAK-10s. Might be survivable for an unarmored victim, but still don’t get hit. Just don’t.

Missile Weaponry:
Karpe O.L.L.I.E. Quick-Lock Missiles: The single missile may not seem like much of an armament, but it’s amazing how many poor fools get caught up in dodging PPC fire, get cocky at having outmaneuvered the Ash Queen - only to eat an Ollie in the back. These things aren’t that hard to avoid or shoot down if you see them coming, but they’ll do some hefty damage if you don’t.

Countermeasures:
Custom Flak: Wide area flak like the ejectors built into the Champion’s legs really have one core purpose in mech warfare: making life suck for everyone, but especially weaker pilots, who rely more heavily on computer assistance for aim. These little bundles of hell are packed tight with various tricks that are great at fooling computer vision in all its many spectrums. Such an environment is perfect for one of the best pilots in this god-forsaken empire to show off her skill.
The Ash Wall: Never underestimate a good shield, not to mention one made of the toughest compounds currently known to man. This thing has been mounted to the Champion of Ashcrown’s left arm for as long as anyone can remember, if not longer. Each and every pilot the machine has had swears by it.

Mech History/Quirks in the machine:
While the Ashen Champion has been in the family for at least a dozen generations, unlike many mechs belonging to old families, the Champion is far from out of date. Like the Ship of Theseus, its parts are constantly replaced and upgraded with the latest tech, its only restriction being the general form in which it was originally built. Three generations back, it even had a short stint as a light-weight mech, under the command of Eldred Ashcrown, Iona’s eccentric great-grandfather.

The Champion favors the approach of fewer, but deadlier weapons as opposed to the “strap on all the weapons!” approach. The deadly flak it keeps packing at all times is an effective counter to that strategy, as the more weapons you have, the more a computer needs to step in to lighten the load. It’s also surprisingly fast for its weight class, another positive side effect of the relatively small number of weapons it keeps packing. The bulky frame allows for powerful movements in any direction, and keeps the frame planted when it comes time to draw its blade.

Traditionally, the Champion is serviced exclusively by the Suzerain’s Hand, an aide they choose at the start of their rule and typically keep for their whole life, though of course assistants are used for manufacturing and larger jobs. Every Hand seems to be in agreement that the Ashcrowns like to complain about “the right leg joint being shifted half an inch too far right”, even though it’s been checked, and they’ll still complain even if it’s moved twice that far left. Iona is no exception.

Mine was the same - honestly mine doesn’t look exactly how I want to, but it makes sense with my vibe for the Far Systems.

Yeah, I've kinda settled on the fewer weapons, stronger build aesthetic that this lends. Helps me really build the Far Systems as "fewer in number, but powerful, and growing where the rest of the Empire stagnates".

I have an idea of Earth as a Trantor-expy, a decrepit and overpopulated administrative world divided up into semi-autonomous administrative sectors with distinctive cultures.

That’ll let me play around with some cyberpunkish aesthetics and urban politics, not to mention it’ll let me make a character based in my old RP stomping grounds that is Northern Europe...

Let me know what you think, OP.

The Imperial Registry

Name: Hi'el of Eshcolon
House: Ptakow (Formerly)
Age: 41
Personality:
Appearance: Hi"el of Eshcolon
Personal History: Born Mihael Antonus Marcaus Iohannen Ptakow, to Duke Anaton III and Dutchess Persaphona. His family, the Ptakows were a strong cadet branch of the larger House of Blazejdzki, to who the Suzerian of Ramlethaal Iohel IX belong. Mihael was from his birth never expected to do great things, he was the 6th child and the 15th in line for his father's title. He grew up acutely aware of this and from a young age resigned himself to his station. He grew up distant from his family, his sister Sarai and the attentive Nanny Henriette were his two main companions in his youth. Him and Sarai were known throughout the Royal estate as trouble making youths. In one instance they were able to train the residents rat dog to chase Countess Attenja's purebred Chartreux around the estate. Henrietta was a guiding force in his life, she was most prominent in helping him to learn basics elf sufficiency skills, one would describe her as loving but stern, never giving into cries and tantrums but being there for him as needed.

In his youth he would meet a woman named Avihail. She was a Countess within the Barony of Ramlethoul. She was Betrothed to his eldest brother, Gevreal. However her situation was not like that of typical royal political marriage. Gevreal suffered from multiple types of nurotic ailments, which had only gotten worse as he aged. At one moment he would act and be as normal as anyone else on the estate, then without much cause break out in uncontrolled fits of rage, targeting anything nearby, and sometimes himself if no one was close enough when the urge struck him. Many physicians from the Imperial Core described as an aliment brought on by the incestuous relationship of the Duke and Dutchess, who were first cousins from their mothers side. On their request a wife was chosen who had distant if no relation to the family. Avihails family were close confidante of Mihaels grandfather and were thus an easy choice. Avihail was offered so that the family could claim the status of hosting a Duke within their midst. However Avihails reasoning for being their was flippant, as was her treatment. She arrived in the care of the estate at age 16, maybe two years older than Mihael. Initial the relationship was distant between the two, she was not Llowed near Gevreal unless supervised, so she spent most of her days wandering the estate. Miheal's was slowly breaking down the guard of apprehension. His boisterous, wiry, lovable chaotic energy helped to open her up, gradually as the years went on. The formed a friendship, and quietly pursued a relationship behind the backs of the family.

As Mihael grew older his father openly started to propose a future for his youngest son. He deemed a life in the clergy to be a possibility. Mostly because he felt he could, through his influence make Mihael an Archpraemonstrator of the Universialist Temple. However Mihael brushed against this idea, more so because it was his fathers idea and not his own. Rather he sought a career in the Royal Interplanetary Defense Force. However his father would force him to Seminary not long after. It was here that Mihael would learn about the history of his faith and dive deeper into its esoteric theology. He would become an Unumite, or a believer in the absolute oneness of God, as opposed to the Divisites, or those who believed in the inherent separation of God and mortal life. It was here he would learn about the Wars of Faith and their implications to the faith. A war which saw early universality at war against various religious movements from the Imperial core. He was particularly taken by the exploits of St. Ostyn of Gath, a martyr who renounced his Monastic vow of nonviolence to lead the universalist forces, contributing to their political consolidation of the Imperial Fringe. He would be captured at the Battle of Mgdalla where after a clerical trile of the church he would be burnt at the stake. But not before being strangled why a garrote. He was said to have miraculously survived his garroting, thus they burnt him at the stake, where he sung a hymnal of grace and mercy for minutes on end, refusing to scream or cry out. The story so moved Mihael that upon graduation from the Seminary he chose to join the Holy Order of St. Ostyn. This again flew in the face of his fsthers wishes, hoping him to join a group like the Society of Pentince or the Hospitalers of St. Marcus, as these were the traditionally more politically powerful orders.

Never the less Mihael went through with his ordainement as a Companion-at-Arms within the Order, renouncing his Nobel titles and claims as was practice. He then renounced his birthname, the presiding Abbott Yohannen gave him the name Hi'el, meaning "God Lives" in the tongue of the ancient forefathers. As a knight his main duty was to help escort pilgrims on their treks to the various holy sites of the Universalist faith. He was station at an Abby on the Planet Izemazigh, a primitive planet. Thus they armed accordingly. Hi'el would be taught early lessons of martial skill, and he would become proficient with Long Sword. As with the majority of men the of his stature he would escort pilgrams to the Shrine of St. Rhetous. He would spend 7 long years here, a desolate deserted world. He eventually grew to the Rank of Knight within the Order, it was around this time he saw his first test of true combat. A dispute between pilgrims and locals caused a riot, the pilgrams were lynched and the crowed eventually turned its rage to the Shrine. Local men armed modestly siezed the shrine and defaced it. It was Hi'el who lead the men to battle, marching to the city from the Abby and attacking at night. The assault was devastating for the defenders, many of whom left to go home for the night and only after hearing of the attack rushed to help fight off the Order. It was here that Hi'el would allegedly slay 8 opponents in single combat, it was also reported to the Council of the Beatles that he suffered what would be a significant wound, when a man with a danger slashed his face, yet no mark appeared. They would retake the shrine and repell multiple attacks throughout the night and would restore the shrine to its original state by the end of the month. It was after this that Hi'el was promoted to the rank of Knight Lieutenant. He was brought to the Grand Temple on the planet Rushched.

During his time at the temple he was offered to join the Ecclesiastica Custodibus, the Ecclesiastical Guard, the vigilant guards of the universalist church. He accepted without hesitation and was consecrated and Knight Lieutenant of the Guard. It was here he piloted his first mech, Ze'ev. His first assignment was to take part in the purging of a holy sect. The Fraternity of St. Miklos were an order of the Universalist Temple who had broken from traditional dogma, stripping God of his inherent goodness and instead believed in God to be a neutral being constantly in flux with its whims amd reasoning, and would use black magic to attemp to understand the nature of God. This heretical belief system was order suppressed by the Metropolitan. The group I filtration a small asteroid colony used by the Fraternity, attempting to gain an element if surprise, however the Fraternity had been expecting something like this. The Knights found themselves in a trap, Hi'el's mech was struck early on by an IED in one of the narrow corridors. And while the purging was conducted and preformed successfully, Hi'el and many other Knights were injured in the process. They would return to the grand temple for rest and recuperation. However not long after he would take a leave if bereavement.

Earlier in the year, unbeknownst to him, Avihail had been left comatosed. She had been the subject of a particular violent outburst on Gevreal's part. Striking her with the weighted end of a lamp, the reasoning unknown, but supposedly because he'd heard the rumors of her and his brother from their early marriage. Most of her bodily functions had been kept in check by various life support systems. Her family had from Hi'el's understanding refused to involve themselves in the matter and his own family was unsure what to do. Hi'el was also deeply unsure, but he knew he loved her, at the very least she was the only woman he ever loved. He requested an Ostynian Hospitaler to see her before he conducted any action. A man named Zebinus arrived, he would tend to her for 3 days before returning to him. He asked if she could be escorted to the grand temple for further analysis.

Zebinus had plans for her. She was still alive. Unresponsive, unable to be roused , and unable to function on her own. But ultimately had significant brain function. While Hi'el was away for duty Zebinus would use this time to conduct experiments related to biomechanical operations. A archeological team had discovered what it thought was a Metatarsal of an unknown creature. The Universalist Temple identified it as a possible regiment of the Pregenetors (supposed extraterrestrial entity which pre-dates and gave birth to humanity.) It was thus kept safe for his experiment. Hi'el was sent to a separate temple on duty, leaving Zebinus with Avihail. With the initial mermerings of the Xeno threat on the imperial fringe he was given permission to also conduct research into bioform mechs for use in potentially fending off incursions in the east. The general process in the creation of what have been popularly dubbed "Nephilim" was fairly well established. Usually the greation of a biomass from the Progenitors DNA using an artificial womb. Yet a pilot was not capable of piloting it unless a sizable portion if the DNA used was of human origin. Different methods had differ effects, the most common route was to use blood samples from the intended pilot early in the early embyrogenisis stage of incubation. However this was the just least invasive, it generally had issues with pilot synchronization later in the Mechs lifespan. other more drastic measures were taken in some cases, but these would cause permanent disability to the pilot. However Zebinus figured he could use a life specimen to great a mech that offered greater control to the pilot, more effectively suppressing the Nephilims inherent consciousness. He chose Avihail for this task.

In the system of Liv'el the Imperial Frontier Guard was struck by a major attack. It was the first know Phrixaperean attack on a standing force. The main target was the planet Henry. Some reports put the whole battle at around 4 days, the Ostynians were stationed on nearby Rammlah and helped to process the evacuated injured and the influx of refugees coming in from the incident. Hi'el would help to organize the relief, yet it was clear that the unknown foe were heading towards Rammlah. He organized a mass evacuation of the planet, while it was thought that only about 2/3rds of the evacuated populace could fit onto the ships on the planet the Order and various elements of local and imperial defense forces were able to accommodate the full breath of the population, granted Rammlah was a planet of only 2.2 million. The evacuation drove deep into the interior fringe and the evacuated peoples were brought to the Grand Temple as an attempt to stage them in a relatively safe area.

Upon his return he was informed that Zebinus was under investigation by a Holy Inquisitor over "moral afronts to God". He was later informed of the situation, being the one who's care she was in. Zebinus had used Avihail as the human genetic component in the process of creating a Nephilim. The Temple still fully intended to use the Bioform mech, even its its creation was inherently sinful. It was in fact the Lord Scribe of the Temple Julius who initially made the offer. It took 3 weeks for Hi'el to contemplate and pray on the issue, but ultimately chose to accept the position after seeing the situation the refugees, hoping he could help fend off the Phrixaperean threat.

Thus as a mech pilot Hi'el engaged in many of the early battles on the conflict in the Fringe. But it was at the Battle of Neo Asculum that he would be thrust into the greatest position of his life. The battle was an overall tactical victory for the Ostynian Knights, a rarity for humanity 5 years into the conflict, but strategically it had no real change. Nearly 1/3rd of all Ostynians Knights had perished in the conflict, to include much of the upper ranks. It was in this aftermath that, as the highest ranking knight Hi'el would be granted the Title of Lord Abbott, jumping a full 3 positions. However this victory was overshadowed by so.ethimg else. A major Phrixaperean fleet had entered a sector just south of them, the devastation and enslavement of up to twenty plants near overnight. The order mobilized to meet the rising threat, however no one has been sure of the potential outcome. The Order has been regrouping and attempting to reorganize amd make important connections with various houses of the imperium.

Titles: Lord Abbott of the Holy Order of St. Ostyn, Prince of Mehr (renounced), Earl of Yoeth (renounced), Baron of Hume (renounced)
Holdings: Earldom of Yoeth (Renounced, passed to his youngest nephew Amil Fabus Marcohs)
Heraldry: N/A
Holding History: having renounced his holdings long before his ability to rule them his is on not position to speak on said holdings.

Mech Appearance: Jephtah, the Sword of Gath
Mech Type: Bioform
Weapons/Systems Info:
  • Hesed: the sword used by Hi'el and his mech. It is a long sword, in a traditional old European bastard sword style. utilizing hard light as the cutting edge of its blade. Given the speed and agility of Jephtah it has been the preferred weapon since they started fighting together nearlyb5 years ago.
  • Alpho P2-16 Autocannon: a autocannon designed to mimic the controls and capabilities of a standard assault rifle. Kept compact and on hand.
  • CUJ Launching System: shoulder mounted rocket pods with one pod containing upwards of 20 rockets. These are kept on base and only attacked for specific scenarios.
Mech History/Quirks in the machine: given the nature of its creation Hi'el and Avihail are capable of holding small conversations an internal voice. This goes for the primordial consciousness of the new being, steming from the reconstituted progenitor.

The Imperial Registry

Name: Eamon Donovan
House: N/A
Age: 33
Personality:
Whilst the world degenerates into madness and chaos around him, battles are waged, with endless bloodshed spilled across fields in great cascading waves; Eamon's attitude remains as calm and tranquil as the endless stillness of the Abyss. A life of loss and hardship has taught him to care and cherish those that surround him, yet he can no longer find it within himself to become attached to any individual that might want of him. For despite his feelings for them, he cannot guarantee their safety from the darkness of this world, he cannot risk those exaggerated feelings of loss again.

Eamon generally tends to seclude himself from people, whilst living his life in an almost tamed state of paranoia. His pessimism has him convinced that one day soon the darkness will come to take them all once more. Instead of chasing the fleeting notions of his heart, he devotes his time to other, more constant aspects of his life, his interests now revolving around mathematics and the Crusaders with which he works. He is however, no ignorant fool. Eamon is well aware of how he is perceived by others, the cold, bitter snare of his persona. He appreciates that while he may no longer have time for his fleeting fancies there are others that should stand and fight for their love. This in turn is but one of the aspects of why he fights the darkness. He suffers so that others might not have to.

Due to the nature of his enlistment, Eamon believes that while working for the Crusaders everything that happens must relate to the mission and its current objectives. He causes the atmosphere of the situation to become so formalised, it leaves little room for a social nature. Even when not working, Eamon remains a blunt and honest man, and almost doesn’t see the point of small talk if it doesn’t have a purpose. Unfortunately it makes him rather macabre and dull, resistant to changes in his life style and the way he lives. If an action is justified, he can adopt it into his habitual return almost instantly and flawlessly.

Every morning he awakens to perform the same routine in preparation for his duties and what the day ahead may yet hold. Every time he’s on a mission he reacts the same way around his superiors, often frigid and cold, concise and to the point; in order to get on with the mission. In a sense, his life almost seems to run by clockwork some days, and people have questioned whether Eamon is actually alive or just as cold and monotonous as the calculations he performs in his head.

While not necessarily religious himself, religion played a large part amongst his former family and so generally his work is followed with prayer, his daily sameness having gotten him into the habit of praying every night before he sleeps, yet his belief in God is uncertain at best. His Commander once asked, with the world so filled as it is with miracles and wonder, where darkness is slain and heroic feats performed; how can he not believe in a God that watches over them. His reply was that it is similar to how, in a world so filled with these splendours and countless wonders, man is still able to feel boredom and become slothful in nature.

Ultimately Eamon is perceived as a level-headed man, with a good sense of logic and reasoning and capable of showing an impressive level of initiative. He remains usually rather calm and collected under pressure and while his formal level of life can sometimes be a little off-putting, just talking to him; it becomes apparent why he is a suitable addition to the forces.

Appearance: Here
Personal History:
The Donovan Clan was one of many mining clans vying for power on the world of Skaela, a barren frozen rock in the corner of the Empire. To maintain their hold of power, such as it was, the Donovan Clan employed tens of thousands of serfs to work the mines and pits that scarred the surface of Skaela.

Eamon was merely another serf born from a long line of slaves. He was neither one of the gene-bred Skaelian mercenaries nor of their noble classes. Instead, he was a boy who knew nothing but rock and earth. He could not remember his parents. He did not see the sky until he was eleven. Digging and traversing the underground complexes of Skaela was all he knew. It was only later, as he began to understand more of his place in the galaxy, did he see Skaela for what it was.

Skaela was once the center of a remote corner of the Empire known as Norsca. Like Skaela, the worlds of Norsca had low populations but high mineral contents. Crime was rife among Norsca as well, the minor clans there embroiled in low-level conflict for decades. This was overlooked for the most part by the Empire due to the massive quantities of mineral ore that was provided to the Empire.

It was only seventy years ago, when an ambitious Imperial count newly come to his title did the Empire take notice of Norsca. Count Ravenburg imposed a hegemony over the worlds of Norsca from Skaela, using genetically modified and eugenic bred warriors. He had hopes of expanding his power further but this was cut short by the Empire. Count Ravenburg was executed and his fiefdom given to another but the warriors remained.

Now, only mercenaries and ore came from Skaela and the status quo was harshly enforced.

It was in Eamon’s times, working as a ‘sparrow’ beneath the earth, where he learned his history from an old wizened miner that would sometimes share his share of bread with the dirt urchin. How this man had come to know so much Eamon did not question. The boy lived on the stories he was told. He did not seek to change his station in life until that old man, Smith, died in a mine collapse. With the death of his only friend, Eamon's hatred was born.

By thirteen, Eamon was taller than most and had thus had become too big to act as a ‘sparrow’. Instead, he was made ‘sparrow supervisor’, watching over the younger ones and teaching them how best to avoid the many dangers found beneath the surface. He also began secretly training them. Eamon had resolved that he would no longer be made to do the work of others. He would find a way to save his people and he would do it with the youngest among them.

Long did Eamon work to make this happen. Pilfering weapons and equipment, Eamon began his rebellion by killing the mining tech operator. From the pits of Skaela, the Skaelian Serf Rebellion war bloody, thousands put down by the Skaelian Defense Militia. Despite leading men thrice his age to victory over better armed and trained forces, Eamon was eventually defeated and condemned to work on the Asteroid mining base known as the Pit. Only the worst offenders and people meant to disappear were sent to the Pit. There, Eamon was supposed to die.

But the Serf Rebellion had other consequences. Pirates, sensing that the Skaelian System was ripe for plundering, raided the Pit. What they did not account for was the Border Legion frigate in the system that immediately fired on and destroyed the pirate gunship and then landed Border Legionnaires on to the mining platform. However, by the time the Legionnaires had mopped up the raiders, most aboard the station were dead. The Legionnaires discovered the pirate leader at the feet of an eighteen year old boy, Eamon having ripped the pirate’s throat out.

The Legionnaires were impressed. Taking on Eamon as their own, they resolved to train him. Eamon Donovan, from failed rebel leader to suddenly being a recruit at the Legion Academy near the center of the Empire. Needless to say, Eamon's dreams had come true. He had escaped the dreary hell of Skaela. Despite that, he did not notice how he had become merely a pawn to another master. Eamon Donovan graduated with honors from the Legion Academy and would spend five years serving as a Border Legionnaire, earning his scars and service medals on a hundred battlefronts.

It was when he was assigned to the Paragon that he was recognized as a possible mech pilot. There, Commander Graham of the Paragon, chose Eamon as his successor for the Azure Defiant. As subcommander of the Paragon, Eamon and the rest of the crew went to the Eastern Fringe and began battling the horrible xenos threat that was arrising. Despite the martial skills of the Border Legion, the Legion suffered terribly. Within three years Commander Graham was dead. For six months afterwards, as pilot of the Azure Defiant, Eamon tried to do what his former Commander had done. Instead, he would see as one by one his fellow Commanders in the Legion were defeated. Distraught, he saw no other choice but to order the retreat and seek allies that could stop the xenos.

Titles: Knight Errant of the Border Legion, Commander of the Paragon
Holdings: The Paragon
Heraldry: Here
Holding History:
The Border Legion and it's line of orbital stations have made it a duty to protect the Borders of the Empire against all threats and, due to the fractious and violent nature of recent times, this has seen them become even more involved in the regional and internecine warfare within the Empire. Once numbering in the hundreds, one by one the Border Legion's Knights have fallen. In recent times, this is mostly been due to the dangers of the xenos. The Commanders saw this as the greatest single threat to the future of the Empire and thus went out in force. They failed. Utterly. The survivors retreated in whatever direction they could find. For Eamon Donovan, newly minted Commander of the Paragon, this also meant fleeing in the face of annihilation. The Paragon is a large station, designed for defense in mind as well as serving as home for the Azure Defiant. Thousands of the Border Legion call the Station home, mostly comprised of mechanics and scientists devoted to keeping the mech up and running. Each one now weighs on Eamon.

Mech Appearance: The Azure Defiant
Mech Type: Mechanical
Weapons/Systems Info:
  • Latna AV-5 Shoulder-Mounted Plasma Cannons: Designed to fire magnetic projectiles that serve as a containment field for superheated plasma, the Latna's serve to knock an enemy down and allow for the Defiant to close the distance and finish an enemy in mid to close range combat. Able to be fired twenty seconds apart without risk of thermal build up, they can be fired more rapidly but the resulting buildup can cause irreparable damage to the Defiant.
  • 6x Prava E.C.O. (Electromagnetic Countermeasure Outfit) Pack, Shoulder Pad Configuration: When flak is not enough to stop enemy fire, the Pravas emit a strong EM pulse to knock smart enemy fire off track. The Prava's activation carries the risk of damaging the Defiant's own systems if its shielding has incurred too much damage.
  • Filagen HC-120 Hybrid Controlled Missiles: In the chest rig these little bundles of joy await to make a mess of any enemy that closes within mid-range of the Defiant. With LAI (Limited Artificial Intelligence) on each missile, they fire unerringly towards a target. If the LAI aboard the missiles is knocked out of commission by countermeasures, the Defiant's AISC (Artifical Intelligence Super Computer) is designed to remote control the missiles, thus making sure they find their targets.
  • Filagen HC-CM Hybrid Countermeasures: The Prava is perfect against smart missiles and directed enemy fire. However, against incoming dumb fire, flak can be released through the hip rigs on the mech. Released by the onboard AISC, the flak can be directed to avoid the Defiant's fire but can also be collected once more upon being released so as to save it for later use.
  • Centurion C-27 Plasma Sword: The Centurion is a staple of Legion mechs, having been applied to all models to come before it. For the Defiant, the C-27 is the latest design of the Centurion to be created. With a white hot plasma coating of the blade, the Centurion is designed to carve through armor plating and deal the final strike on an enemy.
Mech History/Quirks in the machine:
The Azure Defiant has a long and storied history within the Border Legion. One of the newest and most advanced mechs in the Border Legion, it's original owner, Commander Graham, was the first to pilot the venerable machine. Sadly, he was killed defending the Paragon, a single plasma lance being enough to pierce his cockpit and vaporize the Commander. The damage done to the machine was repaired but a memory of it's former master can still be felt. In fact, Eamon would swear the ghost of his dead commander remains with the Azure Defiant. When he had ordered the retreat, he would have sworn that the Azure Defiant defied the fleeing, the controls reluctant to give up the fight.

The Imperial Registry

Name: Gabriel Drake
House: Drake (Formerly)
Age: 45
Personality: Stoic, Pious, and Spartan, Gabriel Drake believes himself to be a crusader, a holy knight, inspired from the ancient texts of Earth's religions and carries with him those ideals on a personal crusade crusade across the lightly populated space of the eastern fringe, defending human populations against threats both alien and rebellious. He sees his service as a moral necessity to keep defenseless humanity safe and alive from forces that threaten their existence.
Appearance:
Image

Personal History: Growing up as the son and inheritor of a small colonial lordship on the eastern fringe, a young Gabriel Drake couldn't have wanted for much. Far out from the politics of the territories closer to Earth, Remnas was a relatively quiet and bucolic colony focused only on self-sufficiency and peace. There was no danger here, no war, and certainly none of the problems that the Empire as a whole was facing.

And then, of course, they came.

Drake had been a young man then, learning the responsibilities of lordship to take over when his father would inevitably pass. He'd learned how to treat people, from nobility to common peasants respect as men. He'd learned that truth and honor were more important than material gain and greed. And he'd learned how to use the family's mech even though it hadn't been needed in years.

But that fateful night, when the xenos attacked Remnas. Drake's skills came in useful. The invaders razed everything in sight, killed armed soldiers and fleeing civilians without regard. It was a genocide of the humanity of Remnas. During the assault, Drake had managed to make it to the family's personal workshop to board the mech and begin fighting, but by that point, it had been too late to save the world. Remnas was lost, and Drake's only reason to fight as he sat into his mech was to conduct a mission of revenge and to buy any sort of evacuation time.

As the hours of the night ticked by, and Drake fought alongside what little defense of the world there was, he'd hoped for rescue, and then he'd prayed for rescue, to any god that would hear him. As fleeing ships were blown out of the sky, and as his family's knights and soldiers were killed one by one, Drake realized there would be no rescue, that the Empire, in its corruption, had failed and abandoned him and his people. And still, in spite of this realization, he fought on in an attempt to save who might remain.

As the dawn crested over the horizon of the burning remains of Remnas' largest village, Drake's mech stood alone in the center of smoldering embers. He was all that remained, damaged as his mech may have been. What xenos had survived had retreated back to whatever hell they'd spawned from, but Remnas was depopulated, forcibly uncolonized by the alien raiders. As Drake came to terms with the loss of everything he'd known and loved, a single communication came from orbit. The family's mech barge had seemingly survived the raid, and had come back when it was safe to search for survivors. All the crew of the Reflection found on the colony world of Remnas was Drake.

After being rescued, Drake looked over the skeleton crew of the barge, as well as the surviving mechanics and technicians who had boarded the ship, and openly declared that their world was no more, that their home was no more. He announced that their lives had changed. Drake had had an epiphany. There was a reason they'd survived against the xenos threat. They'd been given a purpose. These alien beings were a danger to all of humanity if left unchecked, and in a corrupt, uncaring Empire where no help would come to those in similar dire straits as the former world of Remnas, Drake, his mech, and his people would be there to save them. Drake realized that God had decided that if no one else could, then they would. They alone would be the holy defenders and avengers of humanity against the xenos scourge.

On that day, Drake announced that the crew of the Reflection would be known as the Eastern Paladins. And on that day, the Reflection left behind the ruins of their world to patrol the Eastern fringe and defend it from the dangers of the unknowable intelligences from beyond the Empire.

Titles: Lord of Remnas (Formerly), Knight-Captain of the Order Of The Eastern Paladins (Allegedly), Knight Errant
Holdings: Remnas (Formerly), Mech Barge Ship Reflection
Heraldry:
Image

Holding History: Remnas was a small agrarian colony on the eastern fringe of the Empire. Ruled by House Drake and distanced from much of the problems of the more core territories of the Empire, it was idyllic and peaceful. Remnas was ultimately decimated and all settlements razed as a result of xenos invasion.

Mech Appearance:
Image

Mech Type: Mechanical
Weapons/Systems Info: Heavy, outdated, and cumbersome, the Retributor is a family heirloom. Armed with a pair of 30mm rotary cannons, a six-cell missile launcher, an auxiliary flamethrower, and a last stand longsword, the Retributor is a platform built for combat at multiple distances against multiple threat types. Heavy armor plating protects vital systems and the pilot at the cost of advanced maneuverability, turning the Retributor into a defensive bastion, or an advancing wall of destruction. Defensively, the Retributor relies almost entirely on its heavy armor, but can utilize its missiles to intercept incoming fire. For a truly defensive outfit, the Retributor has the option of forgoing a rotary cannon in favor of a heavy plate shield to act as an extra layer of defense, turning the Retributor into mobile cover for those less fortunate to be graced by God with defensive capabilities.
Mech History/Quirks in the machine:
Etched, stenciled, and painted inside the cockpit, as well as across many portions of the Retributor's plating are prayers, testaments, and memorials. Prayers to God so that the Retributor and its pilot may see another day in order to defend humanity. Testaments to the records of the Retributor's mightiest battles, and memorials to those that died on Remnas, so that the pilot and maintenance crew never forget, and so the enemies facing the Retributor know that with their death, those names are given one more drop of vengeance.

In general, the Retributor is maintained by the surviving crew of the Reflection, while Drake himself applies the prayers, testaments, and names personally.

A design flaw has been noted that the Retributor's stability is generally at its lowest if trying to accomplish maneuvering fire, especially if trying to fire both rotary cannons on the move. This results in a common tactic of setting up a stationary field of fire so the Retributor can reduce mobility in order to maintain its stability and accuracy during combat. Additionally, the mech requires a "warm-up" period, and seems to struggle more than usual if undergoing a "cold start" or operating in colder environments. While it hasn't been happened yet, some maintenance crew fear that the Retributor could literally freeze up if its used in too cold of an environment.
