They were both human beings, and by most accounts good men also, certainly undeserving of a permanent departure from our earthly plane, just as much as any who has ever lived has been. At the end of it all, were they not creatures, such that we are? The cold, unfeeling vastness is only bearable through love, Carl Sagan once said.. Why darken our own little slice of the universe with hate?
