"Welcome back everyone to Zellatian News Network's coverage of the Fifth Zellatian National Election. As always, I'm Beatrice ZeTreppe and joining me is Sir Ezerek Neuhauser. Next up is two of the larger, agriculturally minded provinces, Luparia and Lusos. Lets get this started, shall we?"

"Of course," Sir Ezerek said, "First up is Luparia, the Footstone of Conquerors. Historically, invasions of the Zellatian heartland came from Luparia and Zelatun itself was sacked a number of times by the peoples who lived here, though they have long assimilated post our own conquest. "There you have it," Sir Ezerek said, clearing his dry throat with a small bottle of booze, "the Communists have officially gone from having no seats in the legislature, even before qualification to having the 5% required total. At this rate they'll have 10% of the seats instead. The RDP has proven that they are a surprise party to reckon with when it comes to competing against the UDP directly in the south. There are still a number of pro-RDP provinces where the party may gain enough seats to get seated, but there's quite a bit of time before that comes to fruition. The RDP and TSP have passed the Greens, whereas the CRP has passed the ZPP. The Neo-Thelakistine Party's staying power, on the other hand, is unusual - they should have dropped out, but if their goal is to deny the TSP that 5% status...well, the TSP still needs 249 seats."

ZNN Election Update - Zealia, Zeavria, Zrunvia, and Ellato

"Wasn't it exciting to see another set of results a few minutes ago, Beatrice," Sir Ezerek said, clearly a little drunk.

"Ezerek, you apparently have colon cancer. You might want to cut down on the drinking," Beatrice says with a sigh, poking Sir Ezerek with her sword as the results queue behind them. "Lets keep this going then with Zealia! Home to one of the most ardent groups of supporters of Zellatia, Zealia has the highest participation rate in Zellatia's armies than any other province besides Zeagarde in the north. Lets see how things went!"

"The Conservatives are getting closer and closer to the ZMP in grand totals and the PAP aren't far behind. And despite the defections caused by the RDP, it appears that the UDP's lead remains by nearly 100 seats. Further, the ZPP's got to do better in the coming seats if they want to stay at above 5%...but will they? Lets see how Zeavria goes," Sir Ezerek said, bobbing his head a little as he continued.

"Amazing," Sir Ezerek started, "This is the first time since the election before last that the Conservatives have outperformed the Moderates - the ZMP just isn't that strong in the south and it shows. Will they recover in Zrunvia or Ellato? Lets find out!"

Bugratu was the first step, the fortress there holding the pass that protected the heartland of the Zrunvian kingdom and it fell quickly under skilled Zellatian siegeworks."

For now, it is home to a number of lumbermills and more people in the region work in the Timber industry than any other."

"Unfortunately for the ZPP, they've now dropped out of the 5% threshold. They have to do better if they want to survive all of this - as do the CRP, who are only barely above the threshold at this time. There's just one more province being added up today - Ellato!"

"The forested province of Ellato was once like the Four Autonomies, split between three different provinces for each of the major cities," Sir Ezerek explained. "However, after a series of rebellions that severely disrupted Zellatian control of the south, they were forcefully merged into one province and the three groups of peoples, already closely related, were forced to share a single leader. Foren, the first city to be conquered, is also known as the Hidden City, much like Hejaro on the other side of the mountains - for a time, only people who knew the forests could find it - but eventually it was found and conquered. Though they are also rabidly anti-monarchist, hence the RDP's likely strength here."

Zelgar Landrek was many things in his role as Ambassador to both Andrenade and Xuande-Xiphoi. Sometimes he wondered why Prime Minister Destronikan put him here, but he was rather sure by this point that it was to kill him from stress. He'd never been a member of the Zellatian Moderate Party, instead he was a Progressive Action Party official that seemed to luck into the role (his wife's statement on the matter anyhow) here in Xuande-Xiphoi. And while he appreciated having responsibilities, the constant explanations he was forced to make whenever the Prime Minister was in a mood...it defied his ability to keep his stress levels down. Still, he wasn't about to fail to do his duty, especially when called upon.

And so he listed carefully to the message from the DDA Ambassador, Lana Paralle. He'd never really spoken to her - again, directives from Prime Minister Destronikan meant that any direct conversations would usually fall to the Foreign Minister, former Lt. General Skanir Savage, but with the election still being tallied up in progress, Zelgar was technically the highest ranking member of the Diplomatic Service that could be talked to at this time without breaking Zellatian Electoral Laws.

Of course. She WOULD complain about that.

Responding in kind, he left a message with Ambassador Paralle's people:

"Thank you for getting in touch with me, Ambassador Paralle. Your surprise is the same as mine at the Prime Minister's statement on the Demilitarized Zone between our two nations. His stance, as far as I am aware, is a personal one and does not reflect current Zellatian foreign policy, as directed by the Foreign Ministry. If you have specific questions, I will do my best to answer them, but I cannot do so in a direct conversation as I am working with the Zellatian Consulates across Xuande-Xiphoi to make sure votes from various jurisdictions are properly counted among the expatriates. The RDP are getting closer and closer to the required 450 and if they do, well, it'll be an interesting discussion of coalitions. The local elites, unlike elsewhere, though that it was now their time to be independent, despite the odds of Zellatia not collapsing. While the nobles were disloyal, the people of Zegrav had long had a beneficial relationship to being part of Zellatia - shipping rights, guaranteed autonomy, a lack of enslaving them like the nobles insisted - so when they rose up, the people smashed them like a sack of cheese. Ever since, they've had very little nationalist sentiment - and that is shown by the ZPP's lack of success in the province, historically. Lets see those results, then, shall we, and go on our little break once more."

"What can be said of the ruins of empire?" Sir Ezerek said, face somber. "Tigaria was the preeminent rival of Zellatia for most of its existence - no nation ever successfully planted a puppet Emperor on the throne of Zellatia, much less three times, and it was that constant conflict that kept Zellatia from conquering other parts of the continent for a long time - after all, we couldn't afford to risk our north flank. So when Tigaria was conquered, the rest of what is now Zellatia fell like a house of cards. And yet, with that victory came what is known among scholars as the Hollow Age. Technological progress stagnated and the Andrenadine Colonization of the northeast, home to no peoples of note to Zellatian historians, happened with barely any reaction. It wasn't until the late 19th century that technological progress began to reemerge in Zellatia, but by then we were far behind many. We are still a decade behind in some fields," he said, sadly. "But we have proven we are a modern country, I should hope. Lets see Rawran. We will be going through this with less commentary and more progress by the various parties."

As Ambassador Landrek looked at the message, he could only pinch the bridge of his nose. The Andrenadine Ministry isn't exactly the kind that is capable of being any less ham-handed when it comes to their isolationist stances, can they? Whatever the case may have been, he had to respond, even as he monitored the polling stations in Xuande-Xiphoi. Thankfully, there had been a method to the madness to allow expatriate voting - those living in Xuande-Xiphoi, and abroad, were able to vote in the week ahead of election day, with the few actually voting today more or less being the dregs - Zellatia, even with its expatriate population abroad, had a voting rate of 76% after all. That was last year anyways.

It was on track to being 82% this year. A new record. Even with the clear lack of confidence in Zellatia's elections that the Andrenadine government seemed to extol, Ambassador Landrek knew that at the very least it was better than the election in the 90's. 25% participation was...not good. Still, as he yawned as he finally got around to listening to the message a fourth time, he sent back a response that was sure to rankle some feathers.

Secondly, however, the DDA's request for assurances are an insult, especially in the face of an open and free election. There has been no activity in the last eight years that would warrant such a request, even with this spate of terrorist attacks which have little to do with the Demilitarized Zone. We are reminded that the DMZ is for both of our benefits and given that half of the annual visitors to the DMZ are members of the Andrenadine public, it seems that the current situation can be best described as a passive benefit to both your country and ours. Whoever is to become the Prime Minister will likely look forward to talks without preconditions and to insist on some right out of the gate is an insult which I can only assume is not intended.

ZNN National Election Update - Wheeling and Dealing Behind the Scenes?

"And we are back with our second day of coverage of the negotiations happening between the various parties to determine who will be our country's next Prime Minister and the direction the country is going. Reportedly, the Zellatian Communist Party and the United Democratic Party, who is now treating the Radical Democratic Party as a formal alliance partner, have been deep in discussions over the last few days to find a road map. Reportedly, the Zellatian Moderate Party has also reached out to the Communists, but have been rebuffed on account of 'bad faith' exhibited by their coalition partner, the Neo-Thelakistine Party at the end of the election," Sir Ezerek said, looking a little more lively than during his earlier coverage.

"Further, it appears that the left-wing of the Progressive Action Party has refused to rejoin any coalition with the Moderates, with the Zellatian Peoples' Party likewise refusing. The grounds for the former is that the Moderates aren't really offering anything new," Beatrice explained, "and as for the ZPP, the ZMP quite literally dissolved the regional parliaments against their wishes a few years back, hence why they separated from the TPP in the first place before its dissolution. It's starting to look like the Moderates have no ability to form a coalition this time around, especially with their ideological strain solidly on the rightward tilt given their coalition partnership."

"The Interventionist wing of the PAP has likewise refused to align itself with the Communist party, as has the Radical Democratic Party, on the left," Sir Ezerek continued, "Meaning that without UDP support, they wouldn't be able to create a coalition. Heck, even if the UDP agreed, with even 9 party switches in protest, the coalition would fall apart immediately. So it appears that the Communists, despite their alliance having more seats than the UDP, will be forced to coalition with them as the head, unless they want to risk another election or, worse, the UDP agreeing to align itself with the DCP out of principal of forming a government."

"How have the negotiations gone? Well, over the last few days, there's been reports of some offers back and forth, though the details have been scant other than giving the Communists an exceptional number of seats in the Cabinet to make up for the lack of Prime Ministership. That would disappoint some of the other parties, but would go with the territory," she said, sighing. "How's your winnings treating you?"

"Couldn't tell you," Sir Ezerek said, with disappointment in his voice, "The casino closed and is being investigated as we speak. I'll be lucky to get a million dollars out of them, much less a hundred million."

The Upper House is currently being tabulated on the basis of the alliances being allowed to give the constituent parties a piece of the pie, so to speak, so we don't have those results just yet as the last of the expatriate vote comes in. The room was comfortable, Theodore von Leone thought, as he ruminated on the last few days. The Emperor had already called him to wish him well, but had left a little nugget of information along with the call - he was fine with some of his powers being stripped further from him if it would help him form a government. Gavron Shinordizha of the Radical Democratic Party had been pleased and had agreed to Coalition with them for now, to make sure they upheld the promise. Could even lead to their party actually being accurately named, he thought ruefully, wincing in pain as some of his new wounds erupted in pain that affected his old ones. Being dead wasn't in his plans any time soon, but his wounds would guarantee he wouldn't stand as UDP leader next go around.

A light flashed above his door as he received a phone call. Turning, he grabbed the phone from the nearby wall and nodded, "Yes?" Ah, as expected. "I suppose its about time she visited. Thank you, send her along. I doubt she's here to stab me, so no need to search her. We're both politicians, we'll stab each other in the front when we're both at our best," he said with a chuckle, putting down the phone and grabbing his jacket from the other wall's coat hanger. No need to look halfway indecent around a lady, much less a fellow party leader.

"Theodore?" Stevie Who asked, poking her head in a few minutes later, "Ah. Good to see you up and awake. I don't think I need another scare," she said, waiting for him to nod before taking a seat by the bed.

He took a moment to respond, looking at her with curiosity. "You weren't even born yet when the Mad Dolmant gassed the capital, were you?"

"Wasn't born yet, and my family hadn't even immigrated yet," she said plainly, hands crossed in her lap, "Though I was raised in one of the more effected districts. I played with my friends among some of the warehouses that didn't quite get as cleaned as the authorities thought. Wasn't every day we found some bones, but..."

"I understand," Theodore said, frowning, "I wish I had been able to convince Emperor Zellath to allow me more oversight over the clean-up, but he said it that it was a matter for the civil authorities. And they took their time..."

"Things are better now, though," she said, "and I think we'll be able to work together on a few things, too - parts of Zelatun still need our help. I wouldn't have been sent to Parliament without them."

"That you were," Theodore said, coughing a few times, dabbing his lips with his handkerchief. "You know what you represent, right?"

"Humor me, Theodore. What do I represent?" she said, eyes locked with his with a warm, if curious look.

"Peace. I don't think you, no, you know full well what you represent."

"That I do. But it does help to hear what other people think it is, if only to know how the establishment thinks of you."

"Establishment?," he asked with some amusement, "I suppose I am. The last hurrah of my generation, the old man in the race, and you're visiting me in the hospital because I'm too infirm to go home yet."

"After being shot."

"True."

"So? What do I represent?" she asked again, tilting her head as he felt something more than a simply expectation behind those words.

"The future. Not necessarily the one you want, I'll admit," Theodore said, "but the future of Zellatia, in one form or another. I think the reason you did as well as you did is that you were harkening for a better future more vividly than any of us. Destronikan can't think of anything but the past, I'm a relic of the past trying to make gradual improvements, and you, you are thinking of the future more strongly than anyone else did. I have to admire that."

Stevie smiled after a long, empty moment, "I think that might be a decent enough answer. I'd like to think I represent a better future, but we all know how tenuous the future can be. All observers thought that you were on the road to victory, or at least would eke out one over the Moderates. Polls nearly missed my party entirely until a few week ago," she said, leaning back in her chair.

"I wish I could say that it was my fault and that I could apologize, but we all know that pollsters can only factor in what they are familiar with - and most pollsters in Zellatia aren't exactly locals."

"That is true," she said, with some amusement.

A pause.

"Would you like to get down to more pressing matters, Theodore?"

"Of course, Stevie. A little back and forth never hurt anyone, but I believe that if I talk as much as I'd like, I may have to stay here an extra day."

"Right."

"I'm willing to offer a few ministries to you and your chosen candidates. Labor. Interior. Infrastructure. Justice. Veteran's Affairs. Social Welfare. Redevelopment. Health."

"Half?" she asked, "That's a surprise."

"Before you jump to that conclusion," he said with some mirth, "I am planning on adding a few and subtracting others. There are some holes caused by Hardek's hard head when it comes to Diplomacy. His statement on the tragic accident a few days ago are just proof of that."

"Still, that's awfully generous of you."

"Would you have accepted anything less?" Theodore asked.

She thought on that for a moment, clicking his tongue, "No. Probably not. Though, I wouldn't have accepted anything more than that, either, so I think you're as perceptive as I've heard."

"So. Who," he said, catching himself, "Miss Who, where do you see yourself over the next four years?"

"Probably Labor," she said quickly, "Though, it depends on who in my party is interested in what. The former leader of the Veteran's Party is getting Veteran's Affairs-"

"Obviously,"

"Obviously, whereas, well, I can think of a few Subministerial positions that can be filled by the Hatari Party and Thelakisto-Socialists."

"I suppose that's a given. I believe the other members of party leadership can speak to you on the specifics, Stevie, as I'm not quite in a state to do the Tiger Striping here on this, but I believe we can solidify everything by the end of the week."

"Good," she said, taking his hand, "I look forward to working with you Prime Minister. We do have all week to negotiate, but you seem to have a good head on your shoulders when it comes to ground to give. Good day to you and rest well," she said, shaking his hand and getting up to leave.

"Stevie?"

"Yes?" Stevie Who asked, turning around with the door open.

"Thank you for your time today. I'm sure we'll be talking more as we assume office, together."

A warm smile. "I should hope that we have much to talk about."

And then she was gone.

Slumping in his bed, he let out a wistful sigh, "Oh, she's definitely a look into the future. If our future leaders are anything like her, I think I might leave office with no regrets. Though..." he said, looking out his window, "If they have her political acumen, there's going to be a lot more close elections like this. The good kind of Dangerous, for once. Hopefully. Hopefully..." and with that, he got himself some shut-eye.

The end of Election Season was almost here and he needed to get a little sleep before Sunday.

The Prime Minister, settling as the later part of the night rolled over central Xuande-Xiphoi, stretched his feet over the ottoman as the Zellatian election results were being reported live on Union 24’s dedicated channel for the event. The only one in his household still awake, the Prime Minister was regularly comparing the television feed to the text messages coming into his personal and government mobiles, fresh information from “fellow punters” and the Xuande-Xiphoian Embassy regularly working to determine who would next take on the prestigious – and regularly life-ending – job as the Prime Minister of that nation.

While a rocky road to concluding the point, it was the Grand Admiral – an extra hole in his body from when he’d started the campaign – who had taken the lead, and looked sure to take the role. The political attaches in Zelatun had been quite supportive of that prediction, and now reported through that they saw it as a sure thing. The Prime Minister’s chief of staff had already scheduled a call to the new leader for the first activity for the morning.

The super-coalitions of the Zellatian parliaments were being shown in hypercolour diagrams, almost unreadable but to the politically informed. Hayes texted through on his secured phone through to the Defence Minister, one of “the punters”, similarly relaxing in his Revnami apartment before the next day’s Parliamentary sitting.

The Prime Minister dropped his phone down, seeing off the Minister. He looked out the large window of the residence, thinking a moment. He raised the work phone again, sending off one final text to his chief of staff.

Amalgamation isn’t until July – too late for our needs. Lets plan a trip to Zellatia for next few weeks. Have to raise the flag behind von leone if he wants it.
