Application: Spyr

Postby Spyr » Sun Apr 04, 2021 5:10 am

Well I'll do my best to give an application to worry about!

Hello all, and hello again after a long time to many! Apologies if the following application comes off disjointed, once upon a time Spyr was present in AMW and it has been somewhat of a struggle to think back and summarize it without the context of events no longer applicable... but here we go.

People's Republic of Spyr

Image

Geography: Spyr would be found in northeastern Asia, encompassing the following territories: the IRL People's Republic of China regions of Shandong, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, and Inner Mongolia's Hulunbuir, Hinggan League, Tongliao, Chifeng, and Xilingol League, as well as the Russian Federation regions of Primorsky Krai, Sakhalin Oblast, Jewish Autonomous Oblast, Amur Oblast, and southern Khabarovsk Krai (roughly following the northeastward route of the Amur-Sakha border to reach the coast)[1].

Image

Population: 356,589,294 assuming I've done my math correctly there (barring inclusion of some islands as per footnote [2]).

History: The lands now constituting the People's Republic of Spyr have a history dating back several millenia, when the Lyongese Empire arose from unification of the warring tribes and kingdoms in northeast Asia. An economic and cultural center in the region at its height[2], the empire went into steep decline in the 19th century, faced with the encroachment of foreign powers and internal conflicts. By the 20th century, the central government existed in name only, with various local officials and warlords battling each other to secure their fiefdoms and claims to the rest of the empire (often seeking foreign sponsorship to do so[3]).

While popular rebellions had emerged regularly during this tumultuous period, its end came in the 1930s and 40s. Lyongese expatriates attending foreign institutions (many from the long-powerless nobility) took up ideas and visions of how their homeland might right itself from its chaotic circumstances. The works of Karl Marx found fertile ground among them, and when a particularly severe harvest triggered a wave of peasant uprisings, student groups were organized to offer them objectives they had previously lacked. Spyran histories tend to attribute this to organization and education of the people, leading to revolution... those more critical oft state that the 'revolution''s leaders leveraged religious and cultural influence moreso than Marxism. Regardless, through military defeat or alliance, the warlords and their era were ended, and Lyong reuinified.

Though some would argue the revolution's success owed much to tradition, the new state took the name of 'Spyr' ('unity' in Lyongese) rather than that of the empire it replaced. Initialy militant towards those powers who had exerted influence on its lands in times of division, the new government soon adopted the position that trade was vital to building up the country's productive forces. Production for export did indeed aid economic recovery, though some external critics hold that doing so involved compromises a workers' state ought not have made. The sacrifices of this era, correct or no, bore fruit in a sense, as the economy made the transiton from focus on export to domestic.

Politics: The People's Republic of Spyr is a one-party state under the Strainist Party, self-proclaimed as a proletarian dictatorship adhering to Marxism and 'Strainism', an ideology holding itself to be an adaptation of such to local conditions in Lyong. There are few lines drawn between Party and state government, Party committees and officials excercising legislative, executive, and judicial functions.

For most of the time since its founding, Spyr was directed by its revolutionary leadership, who held firmly to their posts. But time marches ever onward, and despite their youth when they had taken the reins of the People's Republic the past few decades have seen a cascade of state funerals as one by one they have winked out. The inertia of their influence has continued to guide the country, but the successors to leadership lack the ramparts of reputation posessed by the Old Guard, and factional debates within the Party as to Spyr's proper course grow more intense[4].

Economy: From the famines and poverty plaguing the region before its revolution, Spyr has spent the past half-century engaged in remarkable recovery and development. Wether union shop stewards distributing caffeine injections on factory floors in the 50s was a neccessary sacrifice to build productive forces (as the Party asserts) or exploitation of workers (as its critics hold), Spyr's early focus on exports has in recent decades undergone a transition to a more domestic focus. Cultural exports (both scrolls/ceramics in the style of ancient Lyong and more modern film/animation) are a growing industry.

Footnotes:

[1]: Splitting up regions makes mapping a little more difficult, so for easier bookkeeping the country could extend to the rest of Inner Mongolia/Khabarovsk Krai and the Kurils, but (in addition to the advantage of not making me update MY maps) in the former two cases breaking away from IRL borders helps underline the distinction between A Modern World and the real one, while the Kurils seem too far afield? They're the sort of place modern Spyr might WISH it had secured, perhaps declaring such with ancient maps and treaties in hand, but they seem more naturally fit for a claim coming north from Hokkaido or south from the Kamchatka Peninsula. Though perhaps there could be grounds to make it work, see footnote [2].

[2]: With Dra-pol in Southeast Asia rather than the Korean peninsula, I'll miss the dynamic of modern Spyrans offering crates of ammunition and then waiting expectantly to be acknowledged as center of the world, with the Drapoel shrugging and walking away just like they did to in ancient times. But maybe I could adapt Zheng He's voyages and the dragonships in some form, reach the same awkward result?

Doing so might also be reason to throw a couple of small distant islands into the claim, maybe Jeju, Wake, the Kurils, and the Paracels or similar, to give more direct involvement in Pacific and Southeast Asian affairs, albeit one which looks clearly tenuous to the countries actually dwelling there.

[3]: Here I'd imagine there's connections to work out with AMW's European imperial powers. Sponsor a warlord or two, get a sphere of influence, albeit one that eventually comes to an end. Hooks to play off there, 'compensate us for the factory we built' vs 'compensate us for our labour you exploited first!', 'give us back those ancient artifacts you've got in your royal museum', etc.

[4]: Ten years back, Spyr's leaders had all been 20-somethings in the 1930s, making them octogenarians on verge of death. A stretch of the imagination, and I'd intended that to play out in RP, but time apparently lacks a pause button: as of now, those deaths would have already happened, and Spyr today would still be coming to terms with the consequences.

A strong, "aye" from me, too.

We're going to need some stronger anti-Communist claims in AMW, at this rate, or a return to the Geletian hound splitting along some minor dogmatic point from the Spyrian serpant, Drapoel wildcat, and... Mari's... scary Japanese animal?

Historically, I'd be interested in the Kingdom of Illyria sending some ships to Lyong, though that small nation with massive local worries would probably have been limited to one entry point and local interest. The Archduchy of Tulgary, too, would be interested, and was wealthier and more powerful, but landlocked, so reliant on the good will of the Illyrians, through whose ports their merchant marine operated.

I'm sure there'll be a lot of dogmatic disputes... not sure on the timeline, but even if Spyr's emergence in the 40s doesnt make it the elder communist state temporally, Lyongese tradition means they'll assume they've got seniority and everyone else should listen to their wisdom. Even when that wisdom is 'put your national liberation movement on pause for a few years, we're selling a lot of cellphones to your empire and the more cellphones we sell the more communism we get'.

As for a presence from Illyria, it seems easily tenable. I might be hewing a little to close to IRL history here, making some assumptions, but I imagine the collapse of the Lyongese empire coincided with the height of European empire-building, and while even its faltering state had strength enough to not be easily conquered and absorbed by the major imperial powers, its divisions meant that minor powers who needed a check in the 'colony' box would find opportunity there... find a warlord ruling a coastal village, dump a hold or two full of rifles into their hands, sign an unequal treaty with extraterritorial stipulations, build a long pier and a miniature version of Shanghai's Bund. Done, you got a colony, and today Spyr is unapologetically running the brewery you built in Qingdao.

"Great Kurosian's Ghost... Spyr!"

While it is likely that Dra-pol would never had moved were it not for how much AMW changed, with particular reference to the long absence of Lyong, and while nothing has yet been done in-character since the move to SEA, I think that my initial, "Ooh, let us go back to Korea!" reflex is perhaps best suppressed. Should Japanese territory indeed be incorporated into a further Communist claim, it seems likely that the area about the northwest of the Pacific would come to resemble one of those wider NS regions that are based on ideology and yet feature a map clustering friendly nations geographically.

I would strongly welcome some Lyongese involvement on the Drapoel isle in antiquity.

Dra-pol in her current iteration remains isolationist as ever, and this time we put water on four sides, instead of three. Four old kingdoms that had dominated the island for -per Da'Khiem's official histories- a million years since early humans first walked or paddled here were in the process of being forcibly unified under the emerging supremacy of the Sudrap kingdom when Europeans first arrived and started to rearrange the furniture. Walmish and Basques amongst the first, and more thereafter.

But the Drapoel were already master steelmakers (probably at first reliant on gathering of loose rocks sufficient only to support a small industry, which would soon become interested in finding external sources of iron ore), with blast furnaces at least the equal of any existing in Europe, and knowledge of gunpowder, though they mostly employed it in fireworks, firesticks, grenades, and rocket-propelled darts. The communal homesteads familiar to the people during the Sudrap conquests at the end of the Four Kingdoms period -coinciding with the beginning of the Age of Sail- were in parts of the island comparable to the Fujian tulou, and -owing in part to the unprecedented scope of the inter-kingdom conflict-, the armies of the Sudraps and other remnant factions were large, experienced, and drilled at least so well as any others on earth. The island was not quickly -nor indeed wholly- conquered.

Dra-pol, an ancient country that previously could point only to its ability to dissuade local traders and pirates from venturing far inland, was experiencing the early flushes of a would-be golden age when the Europeans arrived. I wonder whether a recent infusion of ideas and technologies from Lyong could have been the spark which lit that particular fire, and made the Walmish in particular so convinced that the Drapoel clouded leopard guarded wealth worth waging war for centuries.

The more I think on it the more I really do want Lyongese 'treasure ships' to be a thing. I think the smaller scale of Spyr means they'd be on the smaller end of the proposed IRL spectrum rather than the larger, but 50m-wide five-mast vessels are still significant. How far could they get? Pretty far, probably, but the final extent would seem best left unconfirmed, a connection to play off for states in Yemen/East Africa/Polynesia who see merit in it. Its being greedy, so please feel free to reject this entirely separately from Spyr in general, but I would like to add a set of small island territories: South Korea's Jeju, the US' Wake Island, and the Paracels in the South China Sea. The logic of these would be that they were islands settled by the Lyongese empire during a series of extravagant ocean expeditions, where they gathered 'tributary states' and distributed gifts, depositing governors and building ports at points along the way. In the era of Lyong's collapse, these would surely have come under the sway of other imperial powers, but the existing infrastructure meant bringing in Lyongese labourers was the natural course... populations which rose to join the revolution when Spyr emerged. Leaves some story hooks for Spyr today, some claims it might make to other islands outside its actual control, some disputes over how rightful its current holdings are. I think I'd like a historical claim to the Kurils, but not having an actual presence... those islands cut off northern Spyr's ports, and whether they're an area of contention with an otherwise ideologically-aligned Japan, or a fortified wall in the hands of an anti-communist Siberia, there'll be interesting interactions there.

If the Drapoel were excellent steelmakers... it might depend on the timing, but Manchuria is loaded to the gills with iron. With treasure ships, and the Lyongese view of tributary relations, I can imagine a couple centuries 1400 to 1600 or so where big Lyong ships unload their cast iron, and load up a 'tribute' that is just a lesser portion of that same iron melted down again and improved?

My thinking, presently, is that there may have been a surge in creativity in the Sudrap kingdom, perhaps in the 13th-14th centuries, which saw them begin to disrupt the harmony previously existing with respect to the island's major city states and tribal kingdoms. Dra-pol does not necessarily seem like the strongest contender for the emergence of certain industries, but I can imagine a brief window in one city wherein perhaps even a single great thinker precipitated massive change. Ironworking would have long been known on a small scale. One person made one lightning-bolt breakthrough, and the Sudraps harvested up all the low-hanging iron ore to be found, turning it quite skillfully into reasonably high-grade steel with which they won decisive battles and unified a vast island. That island they then chose to regard as their planet, never looking to further conquest, always to defending the world they came to wholly control. (They may have warred with neighbouring islands, but even successful Sudrap invasions thereof would ultimately have been ((enormously destructive)) raids, not conquests.)

Then, I think, the likes of Labuan -in the north- and the islands of the Kotabaru Regency -in the south- may have been used for strictly controlled trade with Lyong following the arrival of the treasure ships. The Sudraps would have a great thirst for iron ore, and to a lesser degree for other raw materials (They would surely hesitate to import manufactures that could raise questions amongst a people supposed to self-regard as the most ancient, pure, and sophisticated of all beings). All exports would be motivated by the need to pay for further -and finer- ore, through hardwoods and some gems and gold at first, and later perhaps indeed re-export of processed iron and steel. Such trade and would be conducted through the off-shore islands. Perhaps both of the mentioned sites could eventually come to be de facto Lyongese colonies... for a time?

I've noticed Chemaki has kind of faded off again and his Discord account is showing as "Deleted User" which means, I think, he deleted his Discord account (or Discord deleted it for him). So without being able to contact the dear lad to reestablish his interest in AMW, I think we're dropping him from the map. Also there's only one claim for me: Rus Chrin. Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands return to Dragonland.

As far as Spyr taking areas with borders not on the map, as long as Spyr doesn't mind a not-quite-exact representation, then we'll be good to go. Just takes a few extra moments. Yes, it is easier if borders on the map are used, but nothing is impossible to do! Should have it ready in a day or two once I scan the app thread to ensure that I've got everything correctly colored in on the map.

Outside of that, I was contemplating for a few moments perhaps of going on a global empire claiming spree but have opted to just remain with what I have. Really, it's much easier to be all in one place and spread out over the map. Just trying to come up with a name for this blob of land that I like. It'll come to my mind one day.

Hi, everybody!

To begin with, I would like to give a most emphatic endorsement to Spyr's proposal, which gives us a strong and expertly-played element in hitherto somewhat empty East Asia for one, and just as importantly marks the return of a much-missed participant. I am also very happy to approve the proposed additions to Geletia, which stands to play a crucially important role in AMW-Europe as it now stands.

Relations between Spyr in its current form and the Basque state, the latter's attitude to communism mirroring that of the USA, are no doubt rather frosty, though perhaps not so much so as to preclude some form of economic relationship at the very least. As one of Dra-pol's chief antagonists, Ezpanna probably looks to Spyr as a significant military threat, less of an obsession than the CSSR though, locally, much more serious, as the forces on hand would be much smaller. Of course, this would also do much to deter outright aggression or even the maintenance of a hostile tone in diplomacy, careful propriety and conciliation being Ezpanna's watchwords in dealing with the People's Repulic. As a prolific imperialist and a pioneer of European maritime expansion, Ezpanna might claim a history of interactions with the Lyongese world stretching back to the 1500s if not earlier, and if there was any money to be made in taking advantage of Lyongese weakness, the Basques would have jumped at the opportunity. The Basque State's rabid anti-Catholicism could act as another element in bilateral history, with evangelical missionaries acting as spearheads for economic and imperial encroachment. This is probably a topic for another time, of course.

If AMW will entertain a brief (relatively!) turn to Ezpanna's own affairs (my very favorite topic, of course, being myself!), I would like to put forward some possible territorial alterations, and outline some cultural changes as well.

E-P's recent deactivation, which I very much hope is only temporary, has reignited a certain land-hunger, and at the risk of rushing to divvy-up the claim in question before E-P has had a chance to make intentions known, I wonder if it wouldn't be too much to add Sicily, Sardinia, and, provided it is still unclaimed, Cyprus, to Ezpanna. In exchange, however, I would very much like to drop the Moroccan territories I'd previously asked for, with the exception of Western Sahara (which, if you ask me, isn't Moroccan to begin with!). It's been enough of a challenge for me to give the Iberian state a distinctive identity, and my attempt to shoehorn northern Morocco into the 'metropolitan' Basque (though see below) cultural mode seems increasingly like an erasure of Muslim North Africa. In short, I'm doing an inadequate job of representing the area, and in place of my current vague sketches it strikes me as a better course to allow the region to stand on its own.

Much the same argument, naturally, could be deployed against the island acquisitions I've requested, though I would like to think that the stakes are somewhat lower in that case!

In social-cultural terms, I'm inclined to make some significant changes to Ezpanna's entire (albeit quite poorly-defined) character, aimed mainly at divorcing the place more fully from real-life examples. Specifically, I'd very much like to adopt a pattern based on the real-life USA, English-speaking (although we'll probably have to call it something else) and a good deal closer to the Shieldians and Walmingtonians. I've grown more uncomfortable with the notion of appropriating a very real and powerfully alive Basque culture for my own purposes, and doing a poor job of it, whereas something entirely made-up, and derived from an environment with which I'm closely familiar, could probably be portrayed more honestly and more interestingly.

The only important immediate change which springs to mind (hardly a major vote of confidence in my thought-process here!) is a change in nation-name from Ezpanna to Arcansa, the latter evidently an early name for the state which we know today as Arkansas, and gleaned from a Charles Portis collection.

To clarify my intended changes, they being put forward in a block of text on the previous page, I intend to add (restore) to the Saimonan League the following:

Greece
Austria
Slovenia
East Thrace (European Turkey)

This will leave the CSSR with around 65 million people, and the satellite states with around 49 million between them, and Akink will be back to trying to act as a superpower without really quite having the resources to do so conventionally, which should be fun-ish.

I am fine with TCB's proposed changes, of course.

Bring on my four-day weekend later this month, so I can do more than a few lines of factbooking, for once!
