The first step to your participation is to post a roster. Even if you do not think you will have time to RP, please consider posting a roster as a basic courtesy to everyone else. The roster should contain at minimum:

Your players. An ice hockey team has six players on the ice (one goalkeeper, two defensemen, three forwards – left wing, center, right wing) at any one time, but a squad for a tournament will typically have two or three reserves at each position; a squad size of 18-24 is recommended.
A style modifier, from -5 to +5. This dictates how attacking your team is (-5 being most defensive, +5 most attacking). It will influence goals per game but not affect the overall outcome or margin of victory. You may change this modifier once during the group stage, and once again during the playoffs.
RP permissions. See the guide to sports roleplaying if you’re new to sports roleplaying. You may customize your permissions as you wish, but a suggested version is included here which you can copy and paste into your roster.

Please read and respect other users’ RP permissions, and contact them directly if you are not certain. In addition to individual users’ RP permissions, the following tournament-wide permissions apply to all participants:

No pandemic, COVID or otherwise, may be introduced to the host nation or spread to any other teams.
No destructive violence towards the host nation's people or infrastructure.

In addition to the above, you may include other relevant information in your roster such as details about your players or coaching staff, uniforms, team history, tactics guide, PIN number and social security details, etc.

Once you have posted your roster, you may begin roleplaying. These roleplays may take any form, such as newspaper articles, narratives, or images. Audio/visual roleplays must provide a transcript. Please keep images to a reasonable size. For RP purposes, it will be assumed all games will be played under WCoHF [OOC: IIHF] rules; a summary of them, and comparison to RL NHL rules, can be found here.

The format of the tournament will involve all teams being drawn into four groups of 13 teams, and playing a single round robin (playing every other team in that group) at arenas in Græntfjall. The top four teams from each group will progress to the Round of 16 playoffs, which will be single elimination. All games will be played to a result, meaning ties will be decided by overtime, and tied overtime games by shootouts. The procedures for overtime and shootout will run according to the rules listed here.

MD1 will be March 26 with a cutoff at 2300 UTC.

Welcome to Græntfjall. For this edition of the World Cup of Hockey, all games will be played in Græntfjall. Each group will have their home base in a major city, but owing to the number of games being played, games will be spread around arenas in the local area. Each team should play a balanced schedule, with 2 games at each arena.

Group of Wands – Altendalur

The Group of Wands will have their home base in the northwestern city of Altendalur. The country’s second city in more ways than one, Altendalur is generally identified as the vanguard of the west, associated with the cultural tensions dividing the country in two. Those in the west identified more strongly with the old communist regime, and as a result have lost out politically in the new democratic order. According to those in the west, they lose out on funding for infrastructure and representation of their concerns in the Thing [Græntfjall’s parliament]; according to those in the east, the process is merely recompense for decades where the bias flowed the other way.

Altendalur is historically associated with the whaling trade, although despite the various scary whale skeletons that adorn assorted civic institutions (including an enormous complete whale spine over the entrance arch to the Florus Stadion, the city’s main football ground) the industry is today essentially dormant owing to international pressure. Fishing remains a key local industry, though, but bigger drivers of revenue are off-shore gasworks and merchant shipping. Altendalur remains an industrial city even as Græntfjall modernises, with huge foundries and factories along the waterfront, massive industrial parks in the interior, and a scrawling, chaotic, “kraken’s tentacles” road system culminating in the infamous Junction of a Thousand Honks, an enormous interchange connecting 18 major roads.

Altendalur is a little more ethnically homogenous than the eastern cities; owing to its extremely bitter weather in the winter, it’s been a less attractive destination for immigrants. Nonetheless, attracted by the industrial sector, ethnic enclave neighborhoods have grown in recent decades. The city has a growing NDF faction but hasn’t seen ethnic division or anti-immigration activism on the same scale as the east. Residents often regard themselves as more authentically Græntfjaller than those to the south and east, whom they see as having grown soft and been corrupted by foreign values. (However, as we will see, those in the east see themselves in exactly the opposite way.)

Games will be held at the following arenas in and around Altendalur. On each MD, the first listed game will be at the first arena, the second at the second, and so on.

1. Bedeskov Garden, Altendalur (cap.: 6,969)
Located in the formerly industrial, now largely suburban Bedeskov neighborhood. Main arena of the city’s, rather poor, ice hockey team. The Garden is a modern facility that boasts the largest LED scoreboard in the country.

2. Mjölnir Technologik Stadion, Hintersfjörður (cap.: 8,846)
Hintersfjörður is a city in the outskirts of Altendalur. Once a wholly separate city, it has increasingly merged into a northwestern megalopolis, to the disquiet of its more urbane, middle-class population, who regard themselves as Altendalur’s rivals – but to the rest of the country are just grouped together as generic ‘Westerners’. The Stadion is newly renovated and sponsored by Mjölnir Techonologik, the major industrial machinery manufacturer.

3. Enlundhallen, Þingsnitz (cap.: c. 7,000)
The Enlundhallen was the first all-seater ice hockey arena ever built in the country, although it’s seen better days. Not so much rebuilt as built-upon, it’s had additional seating hacked in via various ugly additions. This activity doesn’t seem to have extended to the notoriously dilapidated changing rooms while the guest boxes retain a certain commitment to communist-era brutalism-meets-functionalism. Þingsnitz is a city that lies a few miles to the east of Altendalur, the other side of the Bay of Blood. It’s more cosmopolitan and less industrial; more welcoming of foreigners and easterners; dominated by the fishing trade; oh, and, relatedly, it stinks to high heaven. Many Græntfjaller jokes involve something smelling as bad as a ‘Þingsnitzer fishwife’. Cruder variations of this joke also exist.

4. SynTransPowerDome, Altendalur (cap.: c. 14,000)
The only Altendalur arena built entirely new for this tournament, the PowerDome will host indoor sports from ice hockey and bandy to handball and basketball, cultural events including art, dance, and theater, and conferences for business, government, and NGOs/third sector. At least, that’s the plan. Right now, it’s just an immensely ugly white domed structure, an abrupt pimple that looks ready to burst, set along the Altendalur waterfront amid aging gray-brown industrial factories and fisheries. There’s no exact Græntfjaller translation for ‘white elephant’. Which is fortunate. Despite the ugly exterior, the inside is highly modern and features comfortable seating, well provisioned refreshment options, and luxurious team facilities for home and visitors alike.

5. Asspire Arena, Hintersfjörður (cap.: 9,333)
Named for a Græntfjaller financial services company whose name renders somewhat unfortunately in English, the Arena is the largest hockey stadium in Hintersfjörður. Unlike the MTS, it hasn’t been renovated in years – basically, the hope is you’ll burn to death in the rickety old fire hazard long before you have to worry about all the asbestos you’ve gulped down in the process – but also unlike the MTS it has some genuine character, with everything from sepia-toned photographs of the communist-era People’s Hockey Club lining the walls, to whaling trophies – figurative and literal – adorning the rafters above the rink itself.

6. Wolfwell Arena, Järvendorf (cap.: 13,850)
Järvendorf is a city located to the south of Altendalur, but despite not being on the coast it shares its fishing and trading traditions, thanks to its proximity to the huge Lake Pärhula. The Wolfwell Arena is primarily a bandy arena rather than a hockey one, although allows for both sports to be played. Järvendorf is the northernmost point of the annual migration of the Kamdyr people, semi-independent, semi-nomadic herders of buffalo, reindeer, unicorns, dragons, and other animals. The city’s enormous market welcomes the visiting nomads once a year, which will coincide with the tournament itself, so you may see the Kamdyr – ethnically distinct from native Græntfjallers – trooping their wares into the city center in their brightly colored caravans. The arena received a renovation about ten years ago so it’s not state-of-the-art, but nor is it crumbling to ruins.

Group of Pentacles – Laafjörður

The Group of Pentacles will have their home base in Laafjörður, the country’s northermost mainland point and main port city west of the capital. Laafjörður has always been seen as sitting at the dividing line between west and east Græntfjall (literally, as it is built around the mouth of the Odinsfluss’s western fork). As such it’s always embodied a tension between the competing ‘two Græntfjalls’ and has a reputation as the perennial seat of rebellion. It’s no surprise that Clockwork, the famous play by Zóphonías Juliusson (leading playwright in his day, former prime minister, and now leader of the opposition left-slate political party) which features a mercurial political activist who switches allegiance ‘like clockwork’, was set in Laafjörður.

Laafjörður is a port city first and foremost, a hub for transhipment, an arrival for imports and immigrants in teeming numbers, a departure point for everything from hulks laden with exports to off-shore gas workers and military convoys. A city that never sleeps, with a population pushing 8 figures when counting suburbs and nearby towns its absorbed into its sprawling conurbation, Laafjörður has the traditionally boisterous nightlife associated with ports, and a younger-than-average population, retirees heading south to escape the bustle (and the increasingly multicultural ethnic mix). There’s still space for tradition, with the huge Basilika, the ancient castle dominating the hill overlooking the main city, and the museums of history testifying to Laafjörður’s place as the seat of the Græntfjaller industrial revolution.

Laafjörður has been in the news over the last year for all the wrong reasons as violent race riots led to nights of burning cars and police, right-wing mobs, left-wing mobs, and immigrants brawling in the streets against and with each other. Things have quietened down now, and all visitors can be assured of their safety, but there’s still a much more visible police presence here than in other cities. NDF posters adorn the walls – Laafjörður is the main city of the right-wing populist movement – competing for space with antifa slogans and graffiti in Akhdari, Arabic, Turkic, Bigtopian, Kijani, Verdean, French, and myriad other languages. There are one or two neighborhoods where the national ban on face coverings is less than strictly observed, but in the more middle-class areas where the ice hockey games will be clustered, there shouldn’t be any trouble.

[An OOC disclaimer is necessary here. While Laafjörður’s history and present political situation is an important part of my canon, there will not be any such repeat trouble during this tournament. You can comment on it IC but please don’t attempt to instigate any new riots!]

1. Westfjall Arena, Laafjörður (cap.: c. 12,000)
Defending league champions Laafjörður are one of the most successful ice hockey teams in the history of the GHL. Sponsored by brewing company Westfjall, their arena isn’t the biggest in the country but is one of the best. Player and fan facilities are up-to-date, and there’s even full disability and visually impaired provision (Græntfjall is somewhat backwards in this aspect in other arenas). Of course, many league title banners adorn the arena and local fans are fiercely proud of their own team, so it’s advisable not to wear jerseys of other GHL teams.

2. Vallihús, Esna (cap.: c. 5,200)
If the busy tumult of Laafjörður is too much for you, you could do worse than escape to the scenic seaside town of Esna, west along the coast. Of course, in Græntfjall, seaside towns aren’t really the place for sunbathing – in winter, the ice cream doesn’t even need refrigeration – but even if you don’t need pack your bathing suit, there’s still picturesque views to be had out over the Bay of Plenty. A particular highlight is the traditional lighthouse, guiding boats east along the coast towards the trade hubs. The small, functional arena is rather quaint by international standards with its wooden seating and home-cooked refreshments.

3. Vígmar Kinansson Eishallen, Laafjörður (cap.: 7,070)
The Eishallen is a commercial multi-sports arena in downtown Laafjörður, named for local hockey legend Kinansson. However, since Laafjörður moved to the Westfjall Arena, it actually sees relatively little hockey: it’s mainly used for ice skating, both figure and speed, and will host the upcoming national championships in both. As such a return to hockey will be a welcome sight for the local fans, and visitors should find facilities up to a good modern standard (so long as they don’t mind confused changing room attendants trying to stuff them into tutus).

4. Róska-Friðrún-Íþróttshús, Laafjörður (cap.: 8,355)
Another multi-sports facility, the RFÍ is much newer than the VKE. Named for two anti-communist martyrs, both women, it’s home to Laafjörður’s women’s team and has hosted training games for the national women’s team. (Unlike in soccer, in Græntfjall top level hockey is all-male.) Just because it’s a women’s arena doesn’t mean it’s second-rate, though, with fairly good facilities. An interesting feature is the exterior being entirely covered in solar panels (cynically, this was because investors women’s hockey wouldn’t generate enough revenue and so wanted to build in an alternative income source; as it happens, the women have sold out season tickets every season anyway).

5. Frefi Cube, Untersiersvík (cap.: 9,000)
The ‘cube’ used to be a cruel nickname for the communist-era arena in Untersiersvík, a mid-level town a few miles southeast of Laafjörður. With its angular design and grim concrete walls, it was a much unloved symbol of the regime. Some might see it as a kind of irony that in the capitalist era it’s been re-designed – into an even cubier cube. Now a perfect box of reinforced glass, steel, and plastic, all in a coat of white that the local seagulls do their best to keep fresh, the arena – sponsored by frozen food giant Frefi – is even more incredibly ugly than before. It’s more used as a skate rink than for hockey but owing to its size has been retrofitted for this tournament.

6. The Lilypad Arena, Akurgarten (cap.: c. 10,000)
Akurgarten is a port city west along the coastline from Laafjörður and home to one of the country’s leading hockey teams. Akurgarten is built on the fishing industry and this has influenced certain native traditions, particularly the flinging of “krakens” (really squids, octopi, and assorted fish parts) onto the ice. The locals might ease up on this a little as the home team isn’t playing here, but you still might not want to wear your Sunday best if you’re sitting in the front row.

Group of Cups – Háttmark-South

The Group of Cups will have their home base in Háttmark, the capital city. With a population that’s counted in 8 figures, Háttmark is a sprawling conurbation that’s grown from its origins as a port city into a hive of modern industry, the political center of the country, the seat of the royalty, and one of the major tourist destinations in the area. The Group of Cups will be keeping to the southern half of the city, and spreading further south into the industrial hinterlands, the eastern heartlands of the country. Fierce anti-communist and resolute Catholic sentiments strengthen the further south one goes, while Háttmark itself retains a mixture of highly traditionalist thinking, with the day’s morning announcements on the subway beginning with the playing of the royal anthem, and modern cosmopolitanism, as delivery drones skim through the air bringing coffees to office workers in skyscrapers.

The south of Háttmark is dominated by large suburbs, the country’s population having steadily flocked to the northeast in search of jobs of the industrial corridor developing there. River traffic – along the east fork of the Odinsfluss – and sea commerce historically added to humming environment: Háttmarkers are stereotyped as always being in a hurry, and with over 10 million of them hurrying around, that’s a lot to deal with. They’re also stereotyped as a bit cold and rude. Don’t tell them about this repuation, though, or they’ll get very cold and rude. The economic heartland of the country lies here, and they can be protective of their dominance of the political scene since the break with communism, regarding the rest of the country as having colluded with the old regime and themselves as being the saviors of freedom.

Háttmark is pretty diverse by comparison with the rest of Græntfjall, but still retains strong national characteristics: statues of Sankt Jakob and other national heroes, churches from the vast Basilika to tiny street-corner shrines, and enjoyment of sports, although ice hockey is less popular here than in the west.

1. WMM Arena, Ilsburg (cap.: c. 16,000)
Sponsored by telecommunications giant WMM, Ilsburg are a leading GHL team. Ilsburg itself is located south of Háttmark. An industrial city built along the Odinsfluss river, it has a strong manufacturing tradition as metals and ores mined in the south would be brought north along the river, which continued into the present era with the construction of a huge nuclear power plant. The arena itself is some way outside the industrial hub, however, set among the suburbs built in the mid-20th century to accommodate the population surge. It’s one of the best arenas in the country, both in terms of capacity and facilities.

2. Valhalla Hockey Arena, Kangasdorf (cap.: c. 15,000)
Kangasdorf was once an independent city, swallowed up whole by Háttmark’s growth and today regarded as nothing more than a suburb of the capital. Its strong local team, regularly competing for the GHL title, are sponsored by Valhalla, a brewing company. An unusual quirk of the large, though rather sterile arena, is that beer can be bought in (imitation) horns, plastic drinking receptacles that are very much an acquired taste as they’re difficult not to spill but add a certain ‘Viking ambience’ for those who go in for that sort of thing.

3. Hämeenvalta Super Arena, Molding (cap.: 10,000)
Molding is a district of southern Háttmark more famous for its football club, the Gold Shrews. While that club has received an infusion of cash from Tequiloan multinational Grupo Taxhavn, the same largesse has not extended to the hockey club, whose pitiful arena has been included in the tournament rota only because it’s reasonably large and has good transport links: in other words, it’s very easy to pack a large number of people in the horribly maintained, ill-equipped, dank place, complete with permanently malfunctionining scoreboards and comically unhygienic changing facilities.

4. IceBank Arena, Hinteram (cap.: c. 17,000)
One of the largest arenas in the country is based in Hinteram, a southern district of Háttmark that’s more middle class and residential. It’s sponsored by financial services company IceBank who’ve invested money in improving the arena to a standard far beyond the poor performing local hockey team. Until the construction of the Grand National Arena, the IceBank Arena served as the de facto national hockey arena.

5. Forum Harmersgrunn (cap.: c. 4,000)
One of the smallest arenas being used for this tournament, which is a little deceptive as Harmersgrunn are a fairly strong GHL side. Harmersgrunn itself was once the heart of Háttmark’s industrial sector but has since been substantially gentrified. There’s much local agitation for a bigger, better arena, so this tournament could be the last hurrah for the small, cosy little facility featuring symbols of Harmersgrunn’s past (it was particularly associated with train manufacturing, and train wheels adorn the exterior walls).

6. ACE MultiArena, Mokofen (cap.: c. 10,000)
ACE is a tech firm, although distinctly inferior to Qardinal, the near-monopolistic web giant. As such, their arena is much smaller and poorer than anything Qardinal would deign to touch; the best they can manage is the dingy little MultiArena in Mokofen, a southeastern suburb of the capital. The hockey team based here aren’t particularly good and the area is pretty drab, having failed to keep pace with the modernizing drive of the city further north. It’s mainly used as a concert venue outside of the hockey season.

Group of Swords – Háttmark-North

The Group of Cups will have their home base in Háttmark, the capital city. With a population that’s counted in 8 figures, Háttmark is a sprawling conurbation that’s grown from its origins as a port city into a hive of modern industry, the political center of the country, the seat of the royalty, and one of the major tourist destinations in the area. The Group of Swords will be spread across the northern half of the city, and also have some games in Hofvinger, which is the northern exclave of Græntfjall the other side of the Komodo Channel.

North Háttmark is most associated not with hockey, but football: Gunzlach and Steinaux, the country’s two leading soccer teams, contest their fierce ‘North Háttmark derby’ here. But there’s more to North Háttmark than football. There’s the Thing, the national parliament; the Höll, the official royal palace; and a huge mix of rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods complete with ethnic food markets and weekend cultural festivals, along with traditional working-class industrial hubs around the port and river, fiercely proud of their traditions and increasingly uneasy about the rate of growth and change in their city.

Over the sea in Hofvinger, the northerners regard themselves as the true Græntfjallers, hardier than the southern dandies, resilient in the face of the howling ice winds of the Komodo Channel that even at this time of year will bring fog, hail, and eventually snow. Hofvinger is home to the largest shipyard and is the seat of power for the Græntfjaller Navy, with its enormous King Þorberg Naval Base and missile complex. Daily car and passenger ferries mean it will be easy for teams in Háttmark to travel to games in Hofvinger, but getting a warm reception – or a warm anything – may be a lot harder.

Games will be held at the following arenas in and around Háttmark. On each MD, the first listed game will be at the first arena, the second at the second, and so on.

1. Grand National Arena, Gunzlach (cap.: c. 14,000)
Based in the working class neighborhood of Gunzlach, the GNA is a huge multi-sports complex. The ice hockey arena is separate from the football stadium, but it’s all part of the same mega-complex that will be familiar to those who’ve played in Græntfjall before in football or basketball. Gunzlach retains its white, Catholic, working-class identity far more strongly than surrounding neighborhoods, and is fiercely proud of its links to the military, being near the former Royal Arsenal (hence ‘the Gunners’ nickname’ for the local team.

2. Elínmundur Heiðreksson Halle, Steinaux (cap.: c. 12,000)
Over the river from Gunzlach lies Steinaux, their arch-rivals. Historically, this was the heart of the meat-packing industry, hence the local team’s nickname ‘the Sausages’. Steinaux has, unlike Gunzlach, embraced change, with massive gentrification as it has emerged as a hub of high-tech computer, finance, and especially bio-pharma industries. Steinaux residents tend to be the most cosmopolitan in the country, with little trace of its working-class history not bulldozed over and covered in shiny new buildings. This includes the brand-spanking-new arena, named for former ice hockey great Elínmundur Heiðreksson, whose rambling speech at the dedication suggested he was less than happy about the changes – especially the demographic changes – wrought on his beloved community in recent years.

3. Hagejoki Play Park (cap.: 12000)
Hagejoki is mainly associated with the University of Háttmark, large parts of whose campus and vast tracts of student housing (and the corresponding libraries, intellectual coffee shops, and crack-dens such activity brings) are based there. The multi-sports complex is a little run-down and the hockey arena unloved given the strong priority for football given by the club. However, Hagejoki’s lively nightlife means after a win it’s easy to keep the party going, and after a loss easy to find somewhere to drown one’s sorrows.

4. Hofvinger Community Arena (cap.: c. 10,500)
The frosty northern exclave of Hofvinger doesn’t love ice hockey, but it hates being excluded and there was no way they would be left out of Græntfjall’s hosting of a major sporting event. Their stadium has seen better days – because it’s been rebuilt so many times, some angles make seeing replay screens and scoreboards a challenge worthy of M.C. Georgsson* himself – and is likely to be eclipsed by a planned new development next year. In the meantime, visitors can enjoy the local delicacies such as spicy fishcakes and honey-beer, and then be glared at by locals until they hurry back to the ferry to the mainland.

5. SuperBangMunchVöllur, Zevogur (cap.: c. 11,500)
Located on the same exclave land as Hofvinger but west of the city itself, Zevogur is a much smaller and friendlier community. Built amid sea-lashed rocks, the locals who made their home here were mainly Jewish refugees following Græntfjall’s brutal inter-faith wars of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, who – when they noticed that the Catholics and Protestants appeared to have made peace with each other and were casting around for a common enemy – wisely made the decision to scarper across the seas. Today Zevogur is actually mainly Catholic, but it’s generally more open-minded and tolerant than most mainland communities when it comes to matters of religion. The local arena was relocated four years ago by its snack food sponsors, so it’s still in fairly good shape and has a magnificent viewing lounge that on a good day allows great views of the Komodo Channel (and on bad days is a fog-shrouded nightmare).

6. Eisstadion Háttmark, Haderhavn (cap.: 7,109)
Haderhavn were relegated from the GHL last season, but they’ll be back; the area has a long tradition of ice hockey. The Eisstadion was renovated recently to nearly double its seating capacity and outside the hockey season hosts skating and curling. Haderhavn was, decades ago, a fishing village, long since absorbed into Háttmark proper, but some of its old character remains in the narrow alleyways between the traditional cottages along the wharf-front, once inhabited by humble fishers, now retro-fitted into luxury second homes for the wealthy financiers who commute into the heart of the city.

Kriegiersien Ice Hockey National Team

After a disappointing Olympics, were the men's team failed to win a medal again and instead went out in the first play off round against second rate Nurkama (as did the womens team), it was decided to reinforce the squad with better players from the KHL. But because the selected 'All-Stars' were to busy to fail at the Clubs Champions League, the team got a second chance.
Only one potentially super talent from a minor league replaced a player who tragically drowned.

The Buio'Dzz
Before every match, the team members (including the designated substitutes for the match) will perform a traditional ritual, called the Buio'Dzz on the pitch just before play begins. The Buio'Dzz performed by the Maplish sports teams are from the Mapli-ane, one of the largest aboriginal groups in Mapletish. The Buio'Dzz originated from the sun god, Inaka, a Mapli-ane creation. To celebrate the birth of his son Arone, Inaka broke into a dance while humming a poem to celebrate the occasion. This continued to be the foundation of all tribe dances done by the Maplish aboriginals. The Buio'Dzz is just one of the many tribe war dances from the aboriginals of Mapletish. It is meant to awe and to challenge their opponents in the sports context today. This is similar to the [RL] New Zealanders' haka before their matches. It is performed by a group of people, with intensity and vigour. Actions are performed rhythmically including foot-stamping, tongue protrusions, rhythmic body slapping, clapping of the hands, and an accompaniment of shouting in the aboriginal dialect, which may represent tribal poems passed down from the ancestors of the particular tribe, or a poem that marks the events of a particular tribe. This ceremonial dance ritual also fulfills social functions such as weddings, funerals and celebration of great achievements, occasions, other than the anticipation of war from its earlier intentions. This would be performed unless the hosts of the match in question object to the ritual.

Notes
The entrance to the World Cup of Hockey 42 (WCoH 42) will be the first time the Dragons enter a multiverse ice hockey tournament following the recently finished, World Junior Hockey Championship and a return after being absent from the ice hockey scene since the World Cup of Hockey 36. After a fiery and disappointing showing of class in the WJHC, head coach Darryl Richardson was given another chance to redeem himself, following a disappointing showing. In the recent completed 16th WJHC in Delaclava, the young Dragons were crushed out after the group stage, failing to win a single game in all 7 group stage matches. The Sports Federation announced their decision just weeks before the squad was scheduled to embark on the trip to Græntfjall, citing that the leadership of Richardson was critical in a crucial time period when the Dragons are returning to the multiverse stage. Following the dispute between the national sports organsiations and the Mapletish Board of Sports Organisations (MBSO), the professional ice hockey clubs or the Big Twenty Sports Club were unwilling to release their youth players to participate in this edition of the 16th WJHC. It is not known whether this boycott will end anytime soon but judging from the state of affairs, it will be unlikely that any professional team will release their players anytime soon to keep with the boycott. As such head coach, Darryl Richardson is tasked to bring his Men's ice-hockey squad from the recently completed 16th World Junior Hockey Championship to Græntfjall. This squad of 18 players are all part of the U21 development team for ice-hockey.

The Ko-orenite league cracked down on fighting to speed games up. Don't be surprised if the Dragonflies don't respond to a call to arms. Ice hockey is a regional (but not necessarily small) sport in Ko-oren, limited to frigid Aerellen, the temperate (but cold) northeast, and parts of the unwelcoming west coast. Venues are limited, and Aerellen's largest venue hosts multiple games per day while the season is on, so speeding up games and keeping them plannable is key. Languages used by the team are Dutch and Aerellen (Ko-orenite). Aerellen names are easily recognisable, they start with vowels, featuring many Au, Ao, Ai, Ae combinations at the start of each word.

The league has made the move from amateurism/semi-professionalism to fully professional over the last year. To get there, some teams were moved, some merged, others folded while new teams (in different locations) sprang up to fill the void. This has left part of the fanbase bitter and resentful: their team might have moved, a 80+ year old rivalry might have disappeared, etc. The rest of the fanbase has been very welcoming: more of Ko-oren can enjoy the fastest team sport in the multiverse. Still, the league didn't exactly expand beyond its usual borders (Aerellen, the northeast, and the north coast). There's also the matter of Banija's team in Schemerdrecht: while opening up the city to ice hockey, it has taken away expansion opportunities.

Ice hockey is the most popular sport in Elejamie, followed by football/soccer (both are acceptable in Elejamie) and rugby [union], In fact, the men's national team - nicknamed the Icy Elephants, not to be confused with the ENIHL team Elejamie City Ice Elephants - were one of the best teams in the multiverse, having made the World Cup of Hockey finals four times in four consecutive competitions; winning two (29th edition against Gregoryisgodistan and 31st edition against Valanora) and losing two (30th and 32nd, both times against disliked rivals Valanora), as well as two bronze medal games; although the B-team won a gold medal in the men's ice hockey at the 12th Winter Olympics, they're considered a different team and as a result their achievement is not counted alongside the three WCoH wins. They were also been one of the best teams in the tournament, very nearly making it out of the group stage in their inaugural tournament, making it to the quarter-finals in their second, winning the bronze in their third and staying in the top ten in rankings since the 29th edition (and top 3 since the 30th WCoH), even nabbing a third trophy in the 35th edition. However a disappointing and controversial run in the 38th tournament saw them withdraw from the competition in anger for a few editions (with former WCoH vice president Ed Peak even stepping down from his role and retiring from the public eye until his death in 2020) and, ever since their return for the 41st edition, they've been facing an uphill battle trying to return to their former glory.

Despite losing their seat at Hockey's top governing body, Mercedini have returned to Hockey's premier tournament to contest for a first title, and hoping to claim back their Pot 1 status which they lost last edition. Two editions ago, an unfunded Mercedinian National Team stood firm against some of the world's best to finish in fourth place, losing out to their new bogey team, Neu Engollon. Last time round, Mercedini begun their return to form as they recorded another fourth place finish with a new look side. Selignsky lost out in the losers' bracket to Ko-oren, with the tournament ultimately won by Siovanija and Teusland. However, with more experience there is hope that the Kingfishers can put together a solid run (like Mercedinian teams of the past) to put themselves in the mix for the trophy. Many expected Dini to peak following their runner-up medal, but their consistency had kept them as a force in world hockey before their dramatic group stage exit a couple of seasons ago. Now going into the tournament as a more respected side, the Kingfishers have a platform from which to propel themselves to even greater heights.

Mercedinian-style hockey is much more irregular than its regulation counterparts from other nations, with players often staying on the ice for large periods of time, rarely changing only for injuries and drastic tactical changes. Changes are typically made during the inter-period intervals, game pauses/delays, or during special events such as power plays or short-handed periods, where management and coaches then assess tactics and change the line-ups from there. Changes are often made man for man at a specific position on the ice rather than a whole line change all at once, meaning there can be hundreds of different combination of players available to the coaching staff throughout the tournament, all depending on the opponents they are playing. This means Mercedinian hockey players are extremely fit and have tremendous stamina to last vast swathes of the period. However, as a trade-off, tactical adaptability does become a challenge, with players excelling in some areas while lacking in others, with those qualities dependant on their preferred play styles in the game. With tournaments getting longer and longer through the editions, fatigue has been a major factor in stifling Mercedinian runs for the crown.

Icers' Malinsky gets the nod as first choice goaltender for the tournament as he earns his position as the nation's number one with his club winning the most recent MSL season, the Zoloroni City Icers. The ICers have been a force in domestic and international hockey, so it is hoped he will translate that into the national team. However, it's likely that the second and third choice for Mercedini will almost certainly get a run out during games versus middling teams or in potential dead rubbers, if they work their way to a position where they can afford to take their foot off the gas for a couple of matches. Marin Aalan will be in accompaniment once again he will be joined by Blue Strike's latest edition to their roster, Matsuk Zershevic (thanks to his top performances which saw his team secure HCL hockey for the first time). The three goaltenders each having different positives and negatives which can be used to the teams advantage depending on the opponent. Defensive technique will need to be assessed after the team conceded leaky goals last edition which cost them a spot in the knockout rounds, but talent is certainly in abundance from he three goaltenders listed, they simply need to perform.

No changes in the defensive roster which was completely overhauled a couple of editions ago, with the new management confirming every player that was bought in as the new guard in the 40th edition, for the 41st. For all three lines called up for the World Cup of Hockey, this will be their second tournament following their maiden appearance in Quebec. It is completely domestically based, giving the defensive line more of the essence of Mercedinian hockey, something with previous rosters (featuring players from Novaya Zemlya and Neu Engollon) lacked. As a trade-off, the lack of international exposure and experience may come back to bite the team, since the rigid nature of MSL tactics has failed to yield dividends for domestic clubs in the HCL currently. Whether this group of MSL players can gel enough to form a cohesive unit in short space of time remains to be seen. Although their individual performances in the previous season of the MSL has clearly impressed national team coaches enough to warrant a run-out in the famed blue and black. Tehir 4th palce finish last time round has given Kingfisher fans enough juice to believe in a championship run, but they could also rebound back to where they began, bowing out at the group stage. They certainly impressed alot last edition, punching above their rank, but development and second chances are part of the Mercedinian course, this defensive roster must grab that chance this time around.

When it comes to attacking prowess, Mercedini are one of the world leaders in the sport of football, but hockey is largely an untouched market when it comes to internationally recognised players in many reaches of the multiverse. Still, Mercedini have got a series of marquee names on their rosters with a series of league titles sprinkled around the names present for the national team. The days of foreign leagues being represented are now gone thanks to the rise of the MSL and Mercedini's strong footing within the hockey community. There's plenty of support in the second and third lines of the attacking roster with Mercedinian league clubs up and down the country represented well by the number of players in this roster. Last time around, the attacking roster was one of the big bright spots of a good campaign for the Mercedinians, but they simply couldn't net enough goals to make up for their leaky performances at the back, which results in them capitulating under the slightest of pressure. There's plenty to be excited about if you are a fan of the Mercedinian National Team, especially with a second division player keeping their place in the roster, a first for the nation. We all wait with baited breath for the first match of the tournament to see whether all this practice and investment has finally paid off.

Style:
The Krauts play well disciplined defense and rely on a pair of veterans in Joel Weidman and Augustin Kahn (whom has many all stars under his belt) to be a reliable presence on the offense, while Frederick Vrabel speeds around and goes for the shot on goal more aggressively. That said, if old timer Richart Matthens is in the game, he'll only be there for a short spell due to his age. He's still effective in short bursts and is a future hall of famer, but odds are he's just in there to knock some youngster who thinks he's tough down a few pegs.

Vrabel and Kahn are also, coincidentally, enthusiastic fighters. Expect these boys to get into quite a few tussles.

After underperforming in quite a few seasons, the Krauts have decided to aggressively pursue both new coaching hires and some young blood on the ice. Head coach Alram Isenbrand saw a ton of success as an assistant coach and will be working exclusively for the Krauts, unlike our last coach, who saw this as more of a side gig. Trace Woodard, his assistant, has worked with Isenbrand for a long time and should be able to take a good deal of delagated work.

Long time starter Richart Matthens has finally taken a seat from the starting role at 35 years old. His age was certainly a hinderance, and his running mate Augustin Khan is slowing down as well. The newcomer, Frederick Vrabel, will likely be the focal point of this offense. At 23 years old, he's a three time all star now, having won the award in each of his introductory seasons, and even a first team all pro this season. Probably the best player on the ice for Ranoria.

However! Alram's emphasis has always been a defensive one, and he did manage to reel in a few high-performing, fast young players. Ezekiel Huber is key here, a two time all star at just 24 years old. He's a big upgrade over a remarkably average Arnold Stahl. At goalie, Dareus Burnett is one of the better men at that position in Ranorian hockey, and will be an upgrade over a still above average Andreas Annalena.

Head Coach: Suzanna Marmont, 56 - The head coach of the Chromatik Ice Storm will not be a coach of the CHL per the League's decision. Instead, they turn to one Suzanna Marmont, who may not know the most about the sport but is quite good at organizing people and getting them to act together as a unit. Despite the fact that she may not be able to educate the players on how to play, hopes are she'll be able to help them gel together as a unit.
Assistant Coach: Bryson Sindari, 38 - A valuable member of the Felswyr Viceroys staff, Bryson Sindari is a savant when it comes to Ice Hockey play development in Chromatika. It remains to be seen just how much that's translatable to the world stage.
Goalkeeper Coach: Jason Dumond, 41 - The man who helped both Dorothy Belmont and Dustin Mast to where they are, Dumond runs a goalkeeping school in Chromia for anyone who wishes to learn. He stresses excellence and consistency, two things that any keeper must have a firm hand on.

RW Peter Marshall, 30, Urrheddiao Kings - The best shooter of the Ice Storm, Marshall prefers to do his work from range in the midst of the chaos in front of the net. He can shoot with both hands and prefers to trick people.
C Sharon Mieux, 29, Tihon Typhoon - A 6' 8" center who isn't afraid of checking people, Sharon is a more defensive minded center who is a distributor of the puck than a scoring threat. She can make her opponents' lives miserable, and doesn't mind getting her hands dirty if it's needed.
LW Loren Basalter, 29, Felswyr Glaciers - A quick player with great puck-handling skills and the primary scoring threat for the Ice Storm, Basalter was the only consistent goalscoring threat for the Viceroys and instrumental in their triumph at the inaugural season of the Chromatik Hockey League.
RD Josephine Galmont, 25, Chromia Lancers - The cheeky member of the group, Josephine Galmont led the Chromatik Hockey League with minutes in the Penalty Box in the inaugural season. She's smart about when to go in, though, and won't take a penalty for no reason. Despite her enforcer nature, she's also decent at her job of protecting the net as well.
LD Rowena Hauptman, 22, Felswyr Viceroys - The best defenseman in the nation, Rowena Hauptman famously gave up a full ride to Chromia Central College University to play fullback for the Comets, opting for the lesser known sport of ice hockey instead. She may not be the biggest, barely six feet tall, but she's quick on her feet with a seemingly endless pool of energy.
GK Dorothy Belmont, 21, Felswyr Viceroys - Conceded 39 goals in 66 regular season games and only one goal in the six-game series against the Lancers for the championship. She can be a bit slow in reacting to sudden changes in play, but when she has the chance to square up, there isn't really anyone better in the country in front of the net.

Reserves
RW Roman Beteguel, 28, Inon Neon - A left-handed specialist who mostly scores from the right side of the rink, Roman is known for coming through in the clutch, scoring more than 70% of his goals in the third periods of games. He is the clutch master for the Ice Storm.
C Jared Dumond, 21, Felswyr Glaciers - The best offensive minded center in the sport in Chromatika, he led all centers in goalscoring this past season. That isn't to say he's half bad at passing - he just prefers to finish the job if he can.
LW Wiles Roman, 26, D'rea Metropolitans - The Metropolitans had the second highest goalscoring output in the league despite not making it to the postseason, and Wiles was one of their best. He likes to run directly at people, choosing to either pass the puck off or shoot right before he's about to hit the defenseman.
RD Lereux Pandoval, 27, Myana Penguins - A more offensive minded defenseman who likes to contribute assists. He's quite good at moving up and down the rink and contributes the most during penalty plays.
LD Michelle Pasteur, 24, Urrheddiao Kings - A no-nonsense, somewhat brutish defenseman who uses her body more than the stick at times, Michelle isn't someone to pick on. She can lose sight of the play at times, but is quick to act her displeasure afterwards. Oftentimes the tone-setter for the squad.
GK Dustin Mast, 21, Chromia Lancers - A more instinctual keeper, Dustin Mast plays his best game in the flow of things when reaction is king. He's a bit injury-prone, but when he's available, he's a solid option.

W Drew Han, 25, Z'ai'ai Bolts - A pure speedster who isn't the best at passing but can run by people. Great when a change in pace is needed.
C Frederick Wang, 24, Chromia Knights - A fighter at heart, mostly on the squad to back up Pasteur and Galmont if a physical presence is needed from three players.
D Jerry Monat, 26 - Myana Penguins - Pandoval's pairing partner, Monat is deceptively good at being at the right place at the right time defensively but doesn't do much on the other end.
GK Galvin Cook, 19 - Chromia Knights - Was the fourth best keeper in the league at the young age of 19. Mostly here to see what it's like to be part of a national team and gain some experience.

Lǜ Shān is a small mountainous island in the North Pacific, which is home to various races of dragons. The dragons have ventured to Græntfjall as part of a trading mission, but became interested in the game of ice hockey and decided to join in. Most players are very new to the sport. Physically, they have exceptional balance thanks to their tails, and are significantly bigger and stronger than humans. However, their stick-handling skills are poor.

The dragons do not normally wear clothes and do not need protective equipment as their scales protect them. For the purposes of team identification, they will paint their back scales red (by default) or white (in case of a clash).

In Lǜ Shān naming conventions, the surname goes first, although the dragons are fairly unfussy about this as they have bigger things to worry about like escaping marauding villagers and protecting their gold.

Hard hitter, can pitch in on the power play, but usually isn't the point man with the man advantage. Provides veteran experience in addition to his bruising style of play.

Certainly not the first woman to play for the Stars, but she's certainly the scrappiest. She willingly goes into the corner to scrum to win pucks.

Second pair

Can move the puck in and out of the zone well. Sometimes used on the front line during penalty kills.
7 Erik Weingart, 30, 5-foot-11, 200 pounds. Second alternate captain.
He's there for both hitting and leadership on the ice.

Third pair
18 Jack Bradley, 35, 6-foot-3, 205 pounds.
Size, speed and hard hitting make him a feared defender to go up against. Has worked on conditioning and strength to make his way back to the team.

Many of the Sarzonian national ice hockey team players and coaches were looking to retire after the 40th World Cup of Hockey and start integrating new talent like winger Brett Tanguay, Jr. and goaltender Owen Franks, but the Incorporated Ice Hockey Federation had other ideas.

When Taeshan were named the hosts of WCoH 41, the Sarzonian powers that be opted not to send any team to the World Cup, citing "irregularities" in the 10th Quidditch World Cup, which saw the defending champion Stars not win a single match and fail to advance to the knockout rounds for the first time in history. IIHF organisers put out a terse, two-paragraph statement explaining that as their reason and referred reporters to that statement when asked for further details.

Thus, the Stars team that returns to WCoH 42 contains all the same players as the one that shocked its way into the knockout rounds in WCoH 40. Coach Paul Bremerton said he was "still open" to calling up Tanguay and Franks to the senior team, as the Stars gather for the final stages of their training camp at Bank of Sarzonia Arena in Nicksia.

"I'm more than willing to inject some youth into what's becoming an old-in-the-tooth team," Bremerton said. "Brett Tanguay is the sort of talent that only comes around once in a generation and I'd love to see him in a Stars sweater on the senior level. Despite another failure to qualify, KG have this time kept faith with Freybjörn Fabiansson. Having spent a little time working abroad, Freybjörn has a slightly more nuanced grasp of international rules than most Græntfjaller coaches. The emphasis for the team remains on a defense-first, heavily physical style of play, however.

The Græntfjaller Hockey League (GHL) is a small league, but rivals the GPL (football) for popularity in terms of the national sport.
Græntfjaller players tend to be on the bigger side [by human standards], and very physical, fore-checking and back-checking with equal vigor. But this means trading off for speed and most are not skilled puck-handlers by international standards. They hit a lot of one-timers.
GHL rules are laxer on charging, cross-checking, and shots to the head than international rules.
Fighting is a basically unknown phenomenon in the GHL.

Florian and Ben are big, heavy, hard-hitters; most of the rest are even bigger, even heavier, and even harder-hitting, but Bjarnleifur, somehow still looking to become the first Græntfjaller to play overseas – is by far the best two-way player.

Akurgarten aren't the strongest side but provide much of the first line. Auðunn is a bruising sniper, Jack the only player with any real speed or puck-handling skill. Younger and less experienced than the defensemen, the offense is still big and slow by international standards.

A note on penalties: Græntfjallers will probably be perceived as dirty players by international standards, but they are not intentionally out to inflict cheap shots, but rather used to league rules that are laxer on checking. Most could not even spell ‘concussion protocol’.

A note on fighting: Græntfjallers will not initiate fights. Please do not RP my players initiating fights, ever. That said, if someone else starts a fight, they may respond. Most should be physically able to handle themselves; I don’t object to you RPing your players ‘winning’ fights but don’t have them mop the ice with mine.
