Character Application
Name: While he goes by the name Soren, his true name is Ylakhar /iːləkɑɹ/.
Age: 467 years old, but appears to be somewhere between the ages of 18 and 20.
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual.
Race: Dragon (Stygian/Syrenic/Gurgian)
Appearance: An attractive young man with fair skin, eyes of a striking blue color, delicate fingers, and gleaming silver hair. He is short at 5’6” and is lithe in build. (Clothing: The robes shown in the image, but with pink in place of the dull purple hues and more floral shapes, similar to the dragon form below. Also kindly ignore the lamp and imagine those trailing fabrics as way shorter!)
His draconic form gives one the impression of an overgrown orchid. It is long and slender, and without wings. Voluminous silver fur sprouts from its head, back, chest, and tail. (Pretty much the image provided but with ornate patterns on those petal-like fleshy bits.) Ylakhar is a relatively small dragon, being only about 56 feet in length and 17 feet in height. (*WARNING - The images are massive.)
Position/Status/Affiliation: A wandering bard whose main instrument is his voice. He owes loyalty to no one and helps whoever needs or asks, rarely takes payment for his deeds.
Skills/Powers//Magic:Equipment: His robes which seem to be all he wears (they are magical--that means they can be summoned just like his weapons), a wooden staff with one end carved into the likeness of a hawk, a satchel filled with various alchemical ingredients and journals, and a bandolier with about eight vials for various medicaments. He also carries a barbitos and a flute to go with his voice (both are also able to be summoned/unsummoned, but are typically already visible).
- Weapon Summon : He can manifest his bow or spear out of thin air and wield them rather adeptly. He rarely summons and uses them in front of people however.
- Hand-to-hand Combat Skill : He can fight with or without his summoned weapons, and usually prefers to do so. He is quite notably, abnormally strong for his size and stature.
- White Oath Magic : Healing and shielding magics learned from mortals. He isn’t too well-versed in the use of Oath magic yet, but isn’t entirely useless with it either. Apart from his singing, this is what he is known for.
- Ancient Elemental Magic : Owing to his origins, he can summon the elements--particularly water, lightning, wind, and frost to his aid (without spoken words). They were once his aegis against those who would harm him, his kind, and his followers, but they have fallen out of use. As such, Ylakhar’s affinity to them has weakened greatly and so has his effectiveness.
- Elegy on the Red Waves : Soren is known primarily for his song. His voice is haunting and yet soothing at the same time. There are many who claim that hearing him gave them new vitality and healed their ails. Others have said that hearing his voice is like losing oneself to the tides (something like hypnosis) and that he can placate even the fiercest beast. He takes such words as compliments, but says nothing as to the properties of his voice.
- Shapeshifting : He can switch between his draconic and human form and has the ability to shift into a silver seagoing hawk.
- Flight : Despite having no visible wings, he can propel himself through the air in dragon form. This power is a lot less effective in his human form and seems to only boost his jump height.
Personality:A gentle and good-natured soul with a deep yearning for peace and merriment. He enjoys nature and seeing people live the best and happiest lives possible. When threatened he is typically calm, polite, amiable even. He prefers to make friends rather than enemies, except when what stands before him is set upon a path of violence and evil.
Despite all this, Ylakhar is not above deceit and taking life. In situations where his hand is forced, he can be rather cold and ruthless. He fancies himself a defender of the defenseless and often gets into fights with thugs. Those who come after him or his chosen wards typically do not escape the encounter without sustaining significant physical harm.
Adversely, this old dragon-in-hiding can be quite careless and far too indulgent in the pleasures of life. Having been freed from the bonds of leadership and legalism many years ago, he has decided to live out the rest of his days experiencing the joys of life and spreading compassion and merriment wherever he can.
Moral Alignment: Lawful Good, apparently.
Biography:Soren as he is now known, is just a wanderer with the gift of voice that no one cares about--except when his help is needed. And that’s just fine by him. He is content to explore the world, chronicling his journeys and encounters through song or writing, assisting those in need, and gallivanting about the cities of men like a fool.
What people don’t know is that this insouciant young minstrel is actually an old and tired dragon. He once led a minuscule city-state called Sāl Casura on what are now the Southern coasts of Calaria. His home was a fortress nestled between two great rocks, high above a river delta filled with mangroves. Those under him referred to him and those like him as Irenarchs, for they were peaceful rulers.
Though there were those that praised him and his fellow Stygian or Syrenic dragons, they were forced into hiding due to the festering hatred for dragonkind in the lands of men. When it finally came knocking on their doors, many of Ylakhar’s brothers and sisters fell without much of a fight. They were either gravely unprepared or unwilling to harm the mortals. As a result, their peaceful shoreline and insular bastions were burned to the ground and their devout followers executed en-masse as heretics.
Ylakhar himself grew more and more fearful as word of his kind being butchered reached him. He didn’t know what to do. At first he cloaked his city in a veil of storm, but over time he started to drown out the chaos with merriment. He was caught between two difficult choices, neither one good. He would either be slaughtered by the humans, or he could return to the depths where Gurgia would enslave him once more and use him as a tool of destruction…
In his stupor, Ylakhar began to lose track of his duties, and his subordinates began to notice. Soon, none but his most faithful remained at his side. The rest scorned him for his inaction. His weakness. His decision to deceive himself with pleasure and music when their very way of life was being threatened. It was not long then before people decided it was time for a change in leadership.
Ylakhar’s fortress came under attack one day, and he watched in horror as his most loyal threw themselves beneath the blades meant to cut him. He could only beg the assailants to stop, but they would not. He held back only until the first few slashes and stabs, at which point he threw himself off the great balcony, letting out a shrieking cry of pain and emotional anguish that rocked the fortress to its core. Shortly after, the fortification and the city below collapsed as the magic that sustained their unnatural shapes rapidly dissipated..
It was assumed then that Ylakhar, one of the last Irenarch dragons, had been vanquished and his remaining followers fled for the hills, having lost all hope..
Ylakhar himself lay in the sand for a time, having let the river currents wash him away. He thought he’d died, but upon realising otherwise, got up and started walking down the coast with a lengthy piece of driftwood to hold him up. He swore at that time that he could hear the dying cries of his brothers and sisters on the waves.. It was eerie at first.. But soon, he was singing their song back to them.
Goals: What are goals? Eheh.. Jk. At the moment, Ylakhar isn’t driven to do much of anything rather than general good and bumming around. Perhaps once he was anxious to find and reunite with his Stygian brethren, but he has given that up after many years of finding nothing more than dust and bones.
Theme Song: Does it have to have lyrics? If not, [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkzZI2rJUX8&t=51s]. It is literally the first thing that came to mind. Has a sort of happy and carefree, but valiant feel to it at the same time.
RP Sample:Did you read the Rules?: I have read the rules.
