I appreciate that it's your thing but after giving a handful of songs a listen I can tell it's definitely not my thing. It's not gritty like Bolt Thrower (and Hurdergaryup's description seems spot-on in a lot of ways), it's like how a group of power metal fans would 'fix' Bolt Thrower, ruining everything that I like about them in the process. Needs less epic heroism and more bestial grimdark. :D

Power metal band sings about the same thing as a death metal band, therefore it's a "fix". Excellent logic right there. /s

I happen to love both bands, sue me posers.

Personally I wouldn't call Bolt Thrower part of either of those genres. They're pretty unique and kind of sit within the broader 'extreme metal' category without really falling into one of the standard subgenres.

I'm not saying it's literally 'a fix', that's silly. That said, if one liked Bolt Thrower's concept but wanted to sound like Iced Earth, they'd end up with something similar to Sabaton.

Now, go take a refreshing dip in Lake Minnetonka. :ugeek:

Having read accounts from people who had been close to him in the '90s, along with his autobiography none of this particularly surprises me. I'm worried to hear to more accounts of how he might of treated superfans of his over the years. A malicious narcissist with a cultishly dedicated fanbase seems like a bad combination.

Consider trying these:

Sabaton's cover of Twilight of the Thunder God by Amon Amarth.

Some of their older stuff like Panzerkampf, Rise of Evil, Nuclear Attack, Wolfpack, or Attero Dominatus. There's a noticeable between their pre-Carolus Rex stuff when compared to their post-Carolus Rex stuff.

There's also one of their more recent singles, Bismarck, which was so popular when it came out it had the band trending on YouTube. Which, for a Metal band, is pretty impressive seeing as how unfortunately non-mainstream Metal as a genre is.

But if all that isn't enough to change your mind, don't worry: your gulag sentence will be light. :p

Hurdergaryp wrote:"Gee whiz, war sure is swell!"

Yes, because this is clearly a romanticized and glorified account of war. Who wouldn't want to go through that, am I right? Glory and honor in battle, guys!

You know, come to think of it, I've never once seen a comment on any Sabaton video that glorified war. The bulk of them are history jokes, honoring the fallen/brave, noting how they learned a lot of history from listening to Sabaton, or paying respects to relatives who fought. Never once have I seen anyone say anything along the lines of "I want to go to war and earn honor and glory!" or anything like that.

But I guess there's just no pleasing people. Dudes getting shot in the head and a guy literally holding his own severed hand isn't "gritty" enough, I suppose. I mean, just look at these lyrics:

As the drum roll started on that day, heard a hundred miles away
A million shells were fired and the green fields turned to grey

The bombardment lasted all day long, yet the forts were standing strong
Heavily defended, now the trap has been sprung and the battle has begun

Descend into darkness
303 days below the sun

Fields of Verdun
And the battle has begun
Nowhere to run
Father and son
Fall one by one
Under the gun

Thy will be done
And the judgement has begun
Nowhere to run
Father and son
Fall one by one
Fields of Verdun

Though a million shells have scarred the land, no one has the upper hand
From the ground above to trenches, where the soldiers make their stand

As the trenches slowly turn to mud, and then quickly start to flood
Death awaits in every corner, as they die in the mud, fill the trenches with blood

Fields of execution turned to wasteland from the grass
Thou shalt go no further it was said they shall not pass
The spirit of resistance and the madness of the war
So...
Go ahead!
Face the led!
Join the dead!
Though you die!
Where you lie!
Never asking why!

I guess that's not "gritty" enough, for you? What do you need, severed heads on pikes or something? People getting their guts ripped out with bayonets? Some poor bastard getting swiss cheese'd by a machine gun? A vivid description of the effects of mustard gas? Just because something isn't gory or grimdark doesn't mean it's all sunshine and rainbows. They even give you the death toll at the end of the video, mentioning how it was one of the bloodiest battles of the war, and that it was the longest active battle in history. Which, in your mind, evidently translates to:

Hurdergaryp wrote:"Gee whiz, war sure is swell!"

Sabaton doesn't glorify war. The bulk of their songs honor the fallen and the brave. Defiance, sacrifice, heroism. They don't honor war itself but rather the people who fought it, specifically in the face of overwhelming odds or against some great evil (such as the Third Reich) while most of the time they try to take a neutral stance on the battles' participants.

But you'd know all of this if you had actually ever listened to a Sabaton song before instead of just dunking on them because they're popular and you don't understand why.

Everything made after track 7 on Carolus Rex has been trash or worse trash memes.

That seems like an arbitrary line.

Killing Ground is just a worse Gott Mit Uns and the last 3 songs are the weakest on the album. After the song Carolus Rex Sabaton took a turn into mediocrity. They're glorified meme soundbites.

Was off metal a bit for half a year or so as I was looking for more chill music to suit working from home, but felt the call back to it a few weeks ago.

Currently digging the following...

"Anachron" - Anael
"Entitlement" - Moonspell
"She's Buried Under The Cherry Blossoms" - Saidan
"Change" - Dolores
Are these "human rights" in the room with us right now?
