Bagged milk in your nation

Postby Countesia » Thu Mar 04, 2021 10:17 am

Yep, bagged milk! Literally milk in a plastic sealed bag. Something Canadians are known for. Some claim its less plastic, some claim there is no difference. Some just think its straight up weird. I'm not canadian, but i think its a great idea.

In Countesia, bagged milk is incredibly common. The move from traditional plastic containers and cardboard cartons began in the early 90's when the nations largest supplier of dairy announced it was to begin trialing bagged milk to test public approval and cost effectiveness. The test was an unanticipated success as many folk found plastic bags easier to store and did not fill bins with rubbish as badly as jugs did. eight months after beginning the trials, the supplier announced it was to replace all their plastic jugs with milk bags. Milk became cheaper, and thus competitors followed suit. Fast forward to 2021, it only tends to be more expensive, branded organic milk that are found in plastic jugs.

As for glass bottles, there has been a slight renaissance as dozens of subscription services similar to the milkmen of days gone have started delivering fresh milk straight from local farms to front doors. However, bagged milk still comprises 98% of all milk sold in Countesia.

How much of your nations milk is sold in sealed plastic bags?: Very little - probably less than 1%, and this would be including imports. The (by far) more common bagged beverage here is wine.

How much of your nations milk comes in a traditional container: Approx. 70% of milk comes in some variation of carton. Cartons come in either 1, 2, or 3 Litre volumes for 'plain' milk, as well as for some of the more common flavoured varieties (chocolate, strawberry, etc...). Flavoured milks also can be found in smaller (typically 375mL) cartons. The vast majority of modern cartons are biodegradable and recyclable.

How much of your nations milk is still delivered in even more traditional glass bottles?: About 25%. Milk delivery is still very popular, but the use of glass over cartons varies, sometimes dramatically, by area. Typically, only plain milk comes in glass bottles.

There's still about 4% of milk acquisitions unaccounted for by these three provided options. These final few percentages represent those who buy milk powdered.
January 27° - The 2025 Federal Election season has begun! Initial three-party preferred polls put the I.S.P. ahead at 37%, followed by the Country Party at 34%, then Labor at 29%.

How much of your nations milk is sold in sealed plastic bags?: No, we never have used that before.
How much of your nations milk comes in a traditional container: Most milk is sold in boxes or cartons. Sometimes we have plastic or glass bottles, but not as common.
How much of your nations milk is still delivered in even more traditional glass bottles?: Glass bottles are rare, sometimes sold but cartons are the norm, sold in supermarkets. Sometimes, farmers use milk glass bottles. Milk delivery wasn't really a norm, but direct sales from dairy farmers still happen in rural areas.

How much of your nations milk is sold in sealed plastic bags?: None. Under the Federal Food Safety and Standards Act of 1999 and the Federal Environmental Waste Reduction Act of 2014 bagged milk and other products are illegal and unable to be produced or sold. This is the same for other bagged products as well not counting the Bag in Box products which are exempt from these laws.

OOC: That may be the case in Canada but I remember in New Zealand in the 90s you could get milk in a single sealed plastic bag which would break at the drop of a hat. They might still do it, but I haven't seen it for a few years.

How much of your nations milk comes in a traditional container: About a twenty percent so, if you include cartons.

How much of your nations milk is still delivered in even more traditional glass bottles?:
Most milk is sold in glass jugs that resemble the normal plastic gallon jugs, though smaller varients exist. By and large, most milk is purchased at the grocery store or company store.

Milkmen still exist, but mostly for assisted living, nursing homes, company towns and mental asylums, and places where a permanent population of staff is always there to pick them up as soon asthey are placed.

Recyclable containers are the most common container for milk on Earth. In Space and on other planets, glass bottles are popular choices to store milk. Glass milk containers are cryogenically stored aboard starships for long term usage to avoid plastics from degrading. Glass can withstand being cryogenically frozen without the risk of damage. The aesthetic choice is also extremely popular for spacers who wish to have a drink of milk while looking down at the stars below.
