You Get One Lucky Charm

Postby Kannap » Sat Mar 06, 2021 6:50 am

Feeling like contributing a lighthearted thread to NSG and I'm currently staring at the back of a box of Lucky Charms cereal.

Lucky Charms features eight marshmallow charms: a heart, a shooting star, a horseshoe, a clover, a blue crescent moon, a unicorn, a rainbow, and a red balloon. Each one of these charms gives Lucky the Leprechaun a magically power for him to get away from the kids who want to steal his cereal or whatever the commercials are doing nowadays.

Here are the powers, the back of the cereal box remains kinda vague so I'll be adding slight clarification of my own where needed.
  • The heart charm allows you to bring inanimate objects to life
  • The shooting star charm grants you the power to fly
  • The horseshoe charm grants you the power to run faster than the speed of light
  • the clover charm grants you extraordinarily good luck
  • the blue crescent moon charm grants you the power of invisibility
  • the unicorn charm gives you the power to create things that don't exist - whether you imagine it or it's a creation of somebody else's imagination - mythical creatures, future technology, another planet with intelligent life in our solar system, etc. As long as the majority of humanity doesn't believe it exists, your imagination is the limit.
  • the rainbow charm gives you the power of teleportation to anywhere
  • the red balloon gives you the power to breathe underwater

Assume that a magical creature offers you these charms, they do exactly as he says they do, and they come in the form of a necklace, bracelet, or ring you have to wear for them to work. The magical item of your choosing only works for you, no other person, meaning you cannot transfer it to somebody else. You can use your power as often or as frequently as you'd like, you just have to be wearing it to use it. So NSG, what charm do you pick?

Personally, I would probably pick the rainbow charm, because I am not the most comfortable with airplanes and I like going places but I'm not a fan of sitting in the car for ten or more hour drives to get places. Not to mention driving - or flying in regards to visiting Europe - isn't cheap, nor are comfortable accommodations to stay during visits. I would love to be able to teleport to all the places I'd love to visit, then I could go as often as I'd like without having to pay for travel or accommodations.

The horseshoe and rainbow are effectively the same. I mean, I don't want to travel anywhere outside of earth at this moment. So hmmm...

I'll go for the clover. With my good luck I'd be able to collect the other charms ;)

Okay, less joking. I'll go for the clover, with my good luck I'll be sure to accomplish my goals. Sure, I might waste some time in the tediousness of traveling, but I can spend that time with winning the Ryanair lottery a gazillion times and promptly get them out of business.

I do want the heart charm, but I feel like that would have a negative side effect to it(i.e. the chairs revolt), so I go with the shooting star.

Kind of tempted to go with the blue crescent moon because I'd be interested in going to the places (when I'm legally allowed) you can't normally go and find out what people are like without their public face on (like backstage areas of theatres, or wandering the halls of the corridors of power and listening to what politicians really think of Boris).

But, after 2020/21, some luck would be nice, so I'll take the clover charm, thank you.

Horseshoe sounds nice, FTL travel, but it does specify 'run' so that's a bit limiting.

Rainbow is the safer bet.

Like a lot of places you're not allowed to go to the actual place is much less exciting then the imagined version. It'd be like getting a tour of Area 51, you'd realise it's just another air force base.

But, after 2020/21, some luck would be nice, so I'll take the clover charm, thank you.

Assuming it would work like Domino from X-Men this would also be my pick.

Hmmmm.... the clover charm could be extremely useful. I'd love to go into a casino wearing it.

But on the other hand, the unicorn charm would be the most useful - I mean, you could literally cure cancer with it. So I'll take the unicorn charm.

Lucky has enough trouble with kids stealing his Lucky Charms all the time. One day he's going to snap, and when he does, he'll have access to all of the Lucky Charms and I don't think that any of those is worth being hunted down by a Leprechaun Thanos.

Of course I'd pick the unicorn charm. With that, I could simply imagine into existence a means to do pretty much anything that the others could let me do. Who'd say no to reality warping abilities? Someone wiser and less greedy than me, I suppose.

The charm that gives you the power to run at the speed of light would actually be inherently cursed because when you approach the speed of light, time dilation occurs. You wouldn't age in line with the rest of the world anymore, so I'm passing on that and going for the rainbow charm. With the rainbow charm, I would have the power to teleport to an Instagram "influencer's" house. Just imagine the look on the girl's face when she turns around and I'm standing right behind her. And before she can say a word, I'd pimp slap her and say "post actual content and stop polluting the internet" and then teleport out of there. Then I'd teleport back for a second just to say "travel to Dubai isn't essential travel." Then I'd teleport out.

Is it limiting though? You could easily run over the ocean, you wouldn't fall in because there wouldn't be enough time for gravity to act on you and/or you wouldn't be standing anywhere long enough to break the surface tension.

Teleportation, with the right preparation, could get you off planet. Running can't.

To be honest if I got special powers like this, it would be a very good day for some people and a bad day for others.

FTL, as a science fiction idea, is usually about traveling fast around the universe. I don't know the science on it but could somebody run all the way to a planet near Proxima Centauri?

IDK man, I'm looking at the Unicorn here. It allows me to create things that don't exist, e.g a teleportation machine, a machine to predict the lottery numbers etc. With this, I can do all the others while only taking one

This assumes you have enough stamina to go on for thousands of kilometers.

I mean, I can run a few hundred meters. More if I pace myself, but then I'd not be going at the speed of light. So how long would you be able to run for? Physics tells me that I'd run out of energy.
At least I get a few olympic medals.

Now extraordinarily good luck is always nice, I wouldn't get cancer, since that is definitely bad luck, and for a big part it is random chance, so that one is nice to avoid. Other stuff with a chance part in it would also work out for me.

I think anyone who reads my factbooks knows exactly what I am taking.

But if its not obvious enough, I am taking the Horseshoe.

At long last, I will be able to achieve F A S T.

I will now go all over the places.

I was working under the assumption that FTL running doesn't sap stamina. Because if we're talking about all the ways the laws of physics would ruin it for you, you have a much bigger problem than getting tired - by running FTL, you would instantly burst into flames (and, IIRC from a youtube video about what would happen if a tiny object at FTL speed hit Earth, destroy the whole planet too)

We can justify all this by just putting "also connected to the speed force" if we wanted to.

Also note that it says you "can" run faster than the speed of light not that you had to. So we probably have some control over how fast we can go. So if someone wants to embrace mediocre lower levels of speed it shouldn't be off the table.
