Well, Japan has very high activity. West America and West Canada both tend to have frequent but less severe activity, and have severe activity rarely.

Tsunami warnings have been downgraded but quite surprising to wake up and find not one but three magnitude 7+ earthquakes occurring within the space of about six or seven hours. Highly unusual.

Anyway, most indications are that there have only been tidal surges in the northern parts of the North Island, specifically areas north of Whangarei and also around East Cape and south to Gisborne, including this video of a surge or a tsunami wave itself entering Tokomaru Bay 91 kilometres north of Gisborne.

The first earthquake, a 7.1 located off the coast of Te Araroa near East Cape is in part of the large subduction zone that runs roughly from Kaikoura in the South Island to south of Samoa in the Pacific, passing the Kermedec Islands (part of New Zealand) and Tonga. The Kermedec Islands are known for producing large earthquakes and have done so in the past, the most recent magnitude earthquake to surpass 8 being an 8.3 event in 1986. In recent years, the islands have produced a 7.4 and 7.6 in 2011, a 7.8 in 2007, a 7.4 in 2006, and a 7.9 in 1997. The subduction zone off East Cape has been fairly active in the recent past, producing a 7.1 in 2001, a 6.6 in 2007 that caused damage in Gisborne and caused one fatality, a 6.7 event in 2014, and a 7.1 event in 2016, the last time a major earthquake occurred there prior to this year (and oddly enough, also preceded another major earthquake in the same year, which was the 7.8 Kaikoura earthquake in November 2016).

As far as I'm aware, the 7.4 earthquake and the 8.1 earthquake were foreshocks and mainshocks respectively.

I wouldn't call this a "major earthquake" or series of major earthquakes, only because they've done zero damage to property or life, and have occurred at both a depth and a distance offshore which has made even the tsunami warnings seem overblown.

I don't know what good it is if you're not near the earthquake itself but the advice here is "long or strong, get gone", i.e. you evacuate after the earthquake while they're trying to figure out if the tsunami is coming. And that first quake was long... I wouldn't call it strong... and where I am I didn't feel the others (one of which I was actually awake for).

Then this becomes a question of where you need to be to be in the evacuate category. With the first one of these... the only one I felt (probably because I was awake)... I did some looking for the "tsunami evacuation zones". By and large they don't reach far inland based on the Auckland map. The concern is when you're near an inlet. Which is kind of me (it's like a twenty minute walk from here)... except said inlet in from the Manukau harbour (where basically everything is just shoreline, i.e. not me). If you look at that yellow blob... that's all coming back in from the Waitemata harbour and it actually gets as far as Middlemore (which is the hospital for pretty much all of South Auckland and, incidentally, where I was born).

And just as I was finishing this post got the annoying emergency push notification saying Auckland's clear and back to level 3 as usual (i.e. Covid lockdown).
