I dont think anyone outside of the US gets it. They're a complete anomaly. Unfortunately, they'll never wonder why but at least, they're incapable of convincing other people that they're right so this idea stays in America.

Well, I'm a Canadian gun owner and I'd like looser gun laws. Guess me and others who share that belief are anomalies too, huh?

The chaos of last summer has ensured the 2nd Amendment will never be done with via popular support. Even my liberal friends had a change of heart.

Yeah. I actually taught quite a few friends last summer how to clean and maintain their new weapons, and basic marksmanship.

Mostly of the liberal variety.

You live in a society where the worst criminals are armed with firearms. They don't give a shit, they'll get them where they can.

I too live in a society where (many of) the worst criminals are armed with firearms. That would be Australia.

In my twenties, most of my friends were criminals. I didn't have a gun, and of course they didn't have guns, and none of us wanted anything to do with that kind of criminal.

I went to a guy's house for the first time, to buy drugs (this was so long ago I and he are safe from the law) and he had a pistol on the table. I noticed he let me sit down closer to his pistol than he was, and it was on his left hand too, so I didn't take it as a threat to me: the guy just wanted his customers to know he had a gun. I said something like could I look at it, he said no, it was no big deal. I bought drugs from the guy, as I'd planned to. But I never ever went back. Fuckers who would kill someone to protect their business are the wrong kind of criminal for me.

I think it serves a good social purpose to have small time criminals on the side of law-abiding citizens. I think having "has an illegal gun and doesn't mind who knows about it" is a really good line to draw, of the criminals who are The Worst and should expect no honor among thieves.

We all deal with the fact that the world isn't as good a place as we'd like. I cope through carrying a firearm for personal protection, ASoT deals with it through using a little bit of weed. I have no issue with them choosing to smoke some weed to take the edge off. The world is pretty fucked up and it ain't sunshine and rainbows at all.

Seconded.

Kind of important in life, having a way to vent. The demands of public safety, alas, puts some fairly oppressive constraints on modern human existence. All that stress has to go somewhere or you end up like me, lost in the internet seizing what escapism I can. :p

Nominally I’d advise everyone to find a healthy, legal way to take your lid off for a while. Unofficially, well, as long as you don’t hurt the people around you.

My opinion on gun control in particular is on the record in this thread. I don’t care an iota about self-defence or the Second Amendment or whatever, but I do know that people want guns and I don’t see any good reason to deny that to them. Let people have what they want, within reason.

If your idea of decompressing is going down to the yard to put a few rifle rounds down range, well, I don’t understand you, but if that’s your preference then that is your preference.

Indeed. Gun owners who respect their guns and use them safely and in a healthy manner are among the most responsible and considerate people out there. Everyone blows off steam. We blow off steam by shooting sometimes, it is what it is.

I have nothing against people who have guns, I'm just against giving every single household one

If we have universal gun training, and if we have background and mental health checks, and if we also take assault rifles out of the picture, then I'm open to guns everywhere

Define "assault rifle".

Per Webster Dictonary

any of various intermediate-range, magazine-fed military rifles (such as the AK-47) that can be set for automatic or semiautomatic fire

also : a rifle that resembles a military assault rifle but is designed to allow only semiautomatic fire

also : a rifle that resembles a military assault rifle but is designed to allow only semiautomatic fire

Per Encyclopedia Britannica:
Assault rifle, military firearm that is chambered for ammunition of reduced size or propellant charge and that has the capacity to switch between semiautomatic and fully automatic fire. Because they are light and portable yet still able to deliver a high volume of fire with reasonable accuracy at modern combat ranges of 1,000–1,600 feet (300–500 metres), assault rifles have replaced the high-powered bolt-action and semiautomatic rifles of the World War II era as the standard infantry weapon of modern armies.

This is a more accurate definition. The use of the term "assault rifle" to apply to semi-automatic-only rifles is disingenuous. Remind me, why should semi-automatic rifles be restricted by cosmetic differences and accessories that can very easily be replaced after-market?

No rifle legally accessible by standard civilians for an affordable price is an assault rifle under that definition. That is due to the fact that no reasonably priced rifle has select fire capability. Only pre-1986 machine guns are able to be owned by civilians and that requires a fair bit of money (think 5,000+ USD, commonly around 40,000+ for the bigger toys).
