As with most things the specific circumstances during the event can make all the difference. For example when HMS Sheffield was hit by that Exocet and the Royal Navy inquiry concluded afterwards that it didn't explode, the fact that the still burning sustainer caused fires that were impossible to put out likely led to its loss. If the Exocet had simply exploded I'd put money on Sheffield being extremely battered but ultimately surviving. Mind you, there are actually a whole host of reasons for HMS Sheffield being lost.
