Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei recently issued a new fatwa declaring that women in cartoons and animated films must wear the hijab, according to a recent report by the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

“Is observing hijab necessary for characters in animated films (three-dimensional paintings that come from the artist’s mind)?” Khamenei was asked by an enquirer on a Telegram channel, according to a translation of the question by the IranWire news website.

“Although wearing hijab in such a hypothetical situation is not required per se, observing hijab in animation is required due to the consequences of not wearing hijab,” IranWire quoted Khamenei as saying in his reply.

Wearing a headscarf and covering all parts of the body was made mandatory for women in Iran soon after the establishment of the Islamic Republic in 1979.

Women who leave part of their hair uncovered in public are regularly targeted by Iran’s morality police, known as Gasht-e Ershad.

In recent years, women in Iran have been harassed both by the police and men on the street for “improperly” wearing the hijab. Last October, a young woman was arrested in central Iran for “insulting the Islamic hijab” after a video appeared to show her cycling without a veil, according to the official IRNA news agency.

In March of last year, a video showing a man attacking a woman in Iran went viral and sparked outrage on social media. The woman was attacked for being a “bad hijab,” according to some social media users.

That's right, now all animation of female characters has to be redrawn to make them all wear hijabs. This is just ridiculous as I see it. It's not enough that woman have to wear the hijab in public in Iran whether they wish to or not(and let's be clear, this discussion is not about whether wearing one is OK per se, as I look at it, it should be up to them as individuals), now they have to impose it on all cultural imports from across the world, which will just lead to many of them being kept from import altogether. I would say their morality will lead them to be more closed off than before, but geopolitics ends up dictating otherwise.

I find this deplorable and absurd, Iran is showing how mentally backwards they can be.

Instead of simply maybe encouraging positive portrayal of Muslim ladies in religious activities on television by funding more religious film production (a nativity story? The whole Christian movie craze of 2005-2010ish) they go to insanity of forcing everyone into religious compliance. Theocracy much?

This is a draconian theocratic method that will only get them slammed on the global stage. I sure hope the UN council on human rights spits in their face and says “you stupid moron!”

Iran is more likely to just ban foreign media in my mind, but if Iran does any dubbing of animation from overseas, this could prove funny. It might not be too difficult to digitally edit every scene to have women characters wearing hijab or veils of some sort. Depending on how well the editing can be done, it might be seamless in terms of blending with the animations or more likely it'll just look bad. Probably depends on how much money is spent.

The funny thing is how I read about this inverse effect whereby if you start banning something, even with the death penalty/threat looming, people are still going to do it privately, and to a more frequent extent. They are not just going to give up their stress reliever / entertainment that easily.
