[DEPOSITED IN THE RECYCLE BIN] Ending Violence In Politics

Postby Tinhampton » Tue Feb 23, 2021 10:55 pm

Character count: 181
Word count: 33
IC: Please take up your quibbles with Heather Surridge, Young Tinhamptonian Activist of the Year 2020, who claims to have concocted what you see below on the back of a notepad in the space of "about seven or eight minutes." The below draft is largely experimental and does not necessarily reflect the opinion of Delegate-Ambassador Alexander Smith.

OOC: Inspired by this petition by the Fawcett Society's now ex-CEO (see also this article), which 94,000 people have signed. Ninety-four thousand!
OOC 2: This resolution is deliberately brief, in the spirit of HR#56 "BioRights Declaration."

Why is this needed? Justify your rationale via a preamble please Ms Surridge

"The Commonwealth of The Langburn Islands is opposed to this proposal.

It is understandable seeking to ban those who have been convicted of serious, violent criminal offences from holding elected office. However, barring individuals who have 'threatened' the criminal offences is a clear breach of due process in that the proposal fails to provide a mechanism to determine who and who isn't restricted from holding public office. If an individual idly threatens another individual with a casual, meaningless "I'm going to kill you Shane", should the individual be barred from holding public office under this proposal? If an individual with no political power or position in the Government of the Langburn Islands stupidly threatens to invade the Self-Administrative City of Tinhampton, should that individual be barred from holding elected office in the Langburn Islands? The wording of this clause of the proposal is dangerously vague.

We request that Ms Surridge drastically improves the proposal however we will vote against the proposal regardless".

Especially if the person was involuntarily unable to make sound decisions at that time. Yes, we agree. Against.

"What if the person in question won an appeal later down the line? Whatever the answer is, the Haven opposes. We're...a Haven, we mean that literally. We accept anybody and we don't generally take foreign convictions into account."

This is silly. So if I threaten to raise holy hell in response to this draft, that’s a threat to disturb the peace, ain’t it?

"This would allow the listed criminals to hold offices that are appointed, rather than elected, or to lead a coup d'etat."

"What is 'crime against peace'?"
If the ambassador acts like an ambassador, it's probably Delegate Arthur.
If he acts like an edgy teen, it's probably definitely Delegate Jim.... it's always Jim
