Lord of the Rings: Fall of Man | OOC | Always Open

“To the sea, to the sea! The white gulls are crying,
The wind is blowing, and the white foam is flying.
West, west away, the round sun is falling,
Grey ship, grey ship, do you hear them calling,
The voices of my people that have gone before me?
I will leave, I will leave the woods that bore me;
For our days are ending and our years failing.”

Bilbo Baggins, in his quest to aid the Dwarves of Erebor, is killed at the hands of the twisted creature Gollum. Even without their thief, Thorin had no choice but to continue on to Erebor to reclaim his birthright. Alas, the thirteen Dwarves were little match for Smaug, who in his anger smote Esgaroth upon the Long Lake. Yet their sacrifice was not in vain as the White Council managed to force the Necromancer from Dol Guldur.

He was cast out from Dol Guldur, and with his destination unknown, the White Council felt that Sauron was weakened enough that they need not worry about him for the time. However, for the next several decades, he was in the heart of Mordor, amassing armies of orcs and foul beasts to once again strike at the Free Peoples. All that was necessary now was to wait for the opportune time to strike.

As the years go by, orcs spill forth from Mordor into the lands of the Gondorians. Slowly but surely the Kingdom of Gondor is pushed back. Seemingly from nowhere, an army of orcs descends upon the Kingdom of Rohan. Many towns and villages are sacked as Theoden sits idly by. Bewitched by Saruman, the King of Rohan is powerless to act against the dangers that threaten the Rohirrim. The Ring remains lost, and the realms of Man are beginning to topple.

Theodred and Eomer mount what desperate defence they may, but the situation seems hopeless against the might of Isengard. Gondor similarly is driven back, as Osgiliath falls despite the best efforts of Faramir and Boromir. Minas Tirith soon follows, her gates battered down by the mighty blows of Grond. Her defenders scattered, Gondor crumbles as a tide of Orcs taint her fair lands. Just as Gondor falls, so too does Rohan follow as the Fangorn is burned to fuel the machine of war.

Lothlorien remains, too strong to be assailed while Galadriel yet draws breath. Joined by the Beornings, Mirkwood Elves, and what remains of the Ents, the Lady of Lorien remains one of the last bastions of the Free Peoples east of the Misty Mountains.

Sauron’s victory seems near absolute. The realms of man have been defeated, and the Dwarves and Elves remain too weak to fight back against Sauron’s forces. Perhaps by Eru Illuvatar’s direct intervention, or some other will of fate, Barad-dur has been affected and no new missives are forthcoming. A pale mist obscures Barad-dur from the dead plains of Gorgoroth, and none who enter to investigate ever return. His lieutenants remain without instruction, and to make matters worse come grim tidings from the East. The Ithryn Luin, thought to have gone from history have returned to the West at the head of a great host. However, although they have already made inroads towards Rhun, what their goals may be remains unclear.

With the Dark Lord unwilling or unable to influence events, his violent and greedy servants have already moved to take advantage of the situation. Sauron’s vassals have become cruel overlords in their own right. To the West, in the desolate lands that had once constituted Arnor, the beast Thuringwethil, long thought dead, terrorizes what few Free People remain West of the Misty Mountains. From within the great peaks of the Misty Mountains a great fiery evil stirs once again in the deep. In the Gap of Rohan, Isengard solidifies its iron grip on the men of the Wold. In the vast depths of the Mirkwood forest, Shelob heralds a great host of spiders where once the Elves called home. Not far from Mirkwood lies the lonely Erebor, lorded over by Smaug the Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities, awakened into a new era of domination.

The Nine Nazgul and other vassals under Sauron enjoy vast lands that he had won for himself. The Witch King, Khamul, the Mouth of Sauron, and more lackeys are spread thin across Middle Earth, leading Sauron’s hosts to ensure his victory. Without the will of Sauron to lead them, it bodes ill for Middle Earth.

Reporting for duty!

XD, you know I can't leave a LotR RP unattended, not for anything in the world.

Because tags are evil and banned, have a WIP app, primarily because it's late over here and I do have something to attend to this evening.

Name: Thuringwethil, Lady of Shadow, First Vampire
Race: Maiar (Vampire)
Appearance:
Image

Role: Overlord of the North, self proclaimed Queen of fallen Arnor.
Motivations: Despite the passing of millennia and the death of all those involved in it, Thuringwethil has never forgotten her humiliation at the hands of Luthien. In fact, millennia spent hiding and brooding have only deepened her seething hatred for elvenkind, for the Music of Eru Illuvatar and for Ea as a whole. With Melkor exiled and Sauron now squandering his chances, Thuringwethil seeks rise to prominence as the next Dark Lord or Dark Lady in this case and unite all of Middle Earth under her iron fist and realize the vision of Morgoth.
History:
Most believe that the story of Thuringwethil, Sauron's spy in Tol-in-Gaurhoth, ended when Sauron was driven out and Minas Tirith collapsed, much like people thought Balrogs to have been destroyed by the Valar. Yet this was not the case for Thuringwethil was, much like Sauron himself, a Maiar. Of less power but nonetheless one and as such not as easily killed. She was instead skinned alive by Luthien who would go on to use Thuringwethil's hide and wings to sneak into Angband. Thuringwethil lost her ability to take on batform or any terrifying form that day and was forced to remain in fair form from then onward. After she healed and gained in power again.

This humiliation at the hands of Luthien and Huan severely weakened Thuringwethil, who managed to barely escape the collapse of Minas Tirith and crawl her way back to her master who punished her for her failures further delaying her return to power. Weakened as she was, she was of little use to Morgoth, who proceeded to station her in the far eastern reaches of his realm, much to Thuringwethil's luck, even if she did not know it at the time. For when the Valar marched upon Morgoth and cast him down once and for all and with him all of Beleriand, she was outside of their reach and managed to quickly crawl away below the Ered Mithrin, hiding in the deepest, darkest caverns she could find and biding her time, healing and regaining her power.

As the ages passed and darkness grew once more, Orcs and Dragons driving the dwarves out of the north, Thuringwethil reawakened from her long slumber into a Middle-Earth seemingly abandoned by the Valar and with the Elves on the backfoot. Men now bore much of the burden of the fight which meant that the desired victory was ever so close. With Sauron, her former master, being the current Dark Lord, Thuringwethil found little issue with offering her servitude to him and proceeded to sneak back into Mordor to aid in preparing her master's return.

Following Sauron's return to Mordor in the wake of his flight from Dol Guldur, Thuringwethil was sent northwards, to Angmar to prepare the destruction of the Free People in the north and the subjugation of Eriador of old.

During the War of the Ring, Thuringwethil's schemes of treachery, deceit and darkness paid off, the Dunedain of the North beset by enemies on all sides as Men of Darkness and Bandits as well as orcs and wolves, great bats and trolls as well as the ancient Barrow Wights followed her commands. Much of Arnor quickly fell to her forces yet the presence of evil in the north was too sparse and her hold over the orcs of Misty Mountains tenuous at best as they asserted their independence or servitude under the Balrog of Morgoth of old that had awakened below Moria and thus she was incapable of truly crushing the bastions of the Free People in the north, the staunch resistance of the Grey Havens and the Dwarves of the Ered Luin as well as the remaining rangers and Halflings.

Having thus failed in her task, Thuringwethil was forced to relocate to Fornost and oversee the conquered territories from there while Sauron would have a more capable lieutenant see to the destruction of the Free Peoples in Eriador from Angmar. Punished and essentially in exile once again, Thuringwethil could have been relegated to a minor role in Sauron's court and rule over Middle-Earth...yet fate seemed to hold different ideas as Sauron waned, giving Thuringwethil much more breathing room. While not particularly prepared for this eventuality, being so far removed from Sauron's realm made striving off his control much easier, the Lady of Shadow quickly proclaiming herself as Queen of fallen Arnor. From here she now plots on how to overtake Middle-Earth for her own designs. She must be careful for the strength of the Free People to her west is not to be underestimated and to her south lies the realm of Saruman of Many Colours while to the east Durin's Bane has carved out a dominion. Not to mention Sauron's lieutenant to the north that might attempt to punish her treachery.

Territory: Arthedain, Cardolan, Forochel
Strength: 100 Barrow Wights, 100 Werewolves, 75 Trolls, 500 evil Dwarves (Dourhands), 10.000 Evil Men (Bandits & Hillmen), 10.000 Orcs & Goblins, 3.000 Wolves & Wargs, 4.000 Giant Bats.
Notable Artifacts:

Goodness me, now that's boundlessly tempting. Smaug calls out to me.

Name: Smaug, The Golden, The Foremost Calamity, The Most Magnificent
Race: Uruloke - fire drake, a true dragon.
Appearance: Smaug, greatest of drakes, grows yet more vast by the day. The shadow of his great umber wings could cover a town, his great maw could swallow a wagon and its horses. His scales are a deep vermillion in these days, roiling at the edges from the fire at his heart. His tail lies vast and coiled at his back, while his pale belly is encrusted with gold and gemstones - great hunks of emerald and silver glitter all across his underside, roiling and shining with the heat of his wrathful core. His cat-like eyes shine with cunning and arrogance, and gouts of smoke rise from his nostrils. Magnificent and terrible, the great dragon preens in his resplendence, toying with and shifting the half-molted gold of his underside to glimmer all the brighter. Upon the wing he is wont to block out the sun, and in the fulness of his wrath smoke like a storm pours from between his fangs.
Role: Lord and Master of the Mountain, Scourge of Dale, Dwarf-Foe, Tyrant of Desolation.
Motivations: Lust for Gold and Pride animate mighty Smaug above all else. The Master of Erebor holds the pretender Sauron and all his underlings as lesser beasts, and bends not to their service. His malice and wrath are quickly reared in matters of wealth and eminence, but what evil he does is done out of the natural caprice and cruelty of a drake. In his heart, though, he has begun to bristle at the encroachment of Sauron's servants - he will not be made servant in his own halls, and any who dare to try will find his fires burn hot.
History: A knocking upon the side door awoke the dragon. Without their thief the company of Thorin Oakenshield advanced incautiously, and the awakening Smaug was driven to a towering rage by the bluster and disdain offered him by the princelings. The wyrm devoured each of them in turn, his black heart bringing him to broil and roast them in flame first. His fires burning hot for the first time since his arrival, the Dragon mustered himself, and began to grow paranoid and ambitious. If the dwarves would not leave him to his hoard, and if the world outside would dare forget his desolation, he would make them remember - would burn it into them.

Finding weapons of Lakeman make with the dwarves, the dragon's ire turned first upon Esgaroth upon the lake. He emerged from the mountain wreathed in smoke, and boiled a quarter of the lake to cow the Lakemen into submission. When they resisted, he smote the city to ashes and timbers, and left it little but matchsticks upon the water. Smaug began to think more of the worth of dominion, seeing the treasure to be had in the Master's Hall. He flew abroad in Rhovanion, especially along the Celduin, and brought the villages there to heel. Accompanied by bands of lakemen and roving Easterlings attracted by his name, he demanded and received much submission, and more tribute. The followers of the dragon - some worshippers driven mad by his fire, most merely opportunists - came to rule over his growing network of tributaries. His heralds sang his praises, and gathered the dragon's tribute at the remains of Esgaroth to be rowed up to Dale and piled in hoard.

With the waxing of Sauron the men of Rhovanion and Dorwinion were set upon by orcs out of the mountains. Driven to desperation, what cities and towns remained were forced to bow before the dragon beneath Erebor to beg his protection. Styling himself a king - a tyrant, Smaug revelled in the submission offered him, and burnt alive many a hundred orc raiders as they fled. A few snaga only escaped his wroth, and this was enough, for they told of him in the mountains. He had begun to fly over the Iron Hills - laying waste to what dwarves he could reach, and to search the Grey Mountains for Thorin's hall. The sight of the great dragon's smoking form upon the wing turned many an orc's heart, and with the veiling of Sauron many were in search of a master. As Smaug burned and wasted the homes of Thorin and Dain's folk, goblins and orcs began to gather in his train, and to follow his shadow across the land. As the dragon ate, he grew hungrier - as he burned he grew more wrathful, and yet as he came to dominate the minds of men and orcs he came to long for dominion. The lust and greed of the dragon fixed itself on dominion, and upon the ruin of all of Thorin's kin who had tried to steal from him. As word of the Blue Wizards rises in the east, he grows in paranoia and ambition - he will not have his kingdom stolen by conjurers and easterlings, even if he must arm his own in all the mail of Erebor.
Territory: The dragon sleeps in Erebor beneath the mountain. In ruined Dale those fanatical enough to worship his fire dwell - orcs and men both. The remains of Esgaroth and the part of Rhovanion around the Celduin submit to him, and orcs in the Grey Mountains and Iron Hills both have begun to muster to his banner. Dorwinion is the furthest part of his domain thus far.
Strength: Smaug, the Foremost Calamity, 1,300 Evil Men of Rhovanion, Dorwinion and Rhun, 700 Orcs of Ered Mithrin, 3 Cold-drakes of the Withered Heath
Notable Artifacts: The Arkenstone, The Hoard of Erebor.

Strange question - the Blue Wizards - when you mention a great host, are we talking Eastrons, Haradrim, Orcs, Black Dwarves...?

Names: Morinehtar and Rómestámo (Mor and Rome)
Race: Istari
Appearance: Mor wears his beard long and carefully controlled, braided and oiled, falling nearly to his knees, his bright blue eyes and long white hair hidden and stuffed into his weatherbeaten hood under a wide brimmed hat with exquisite embroidery. He is taller than his companion, Rome, who is a more squat man, not being of the Maia of Orome, but of those who followed Aule, like Curunir. Rome's beard is a great broad thing, complemented by a wide curling mustache, set about with links of gold and silver chain after the fashion of the Red Dwarves. Mor bears his staff, a tall length of hawthorne cut with curious obsidian runes out of the east, where Rome's staff has been modified to bear a heavy pick-head set with a length of bright red ruby, inlaid with mithril chasing. Both men wear blue robes, richly embroidered with minute stitching set about with enchantment, which hide most of their other features.
Role: Istari
Motivations: That would be telling, you see.
History: The Blue Wizards have returned out of the east at the head of a host of Eastrons, Rhun-men, Variags, and Red Dwarves, marching hard for Mordor and the Sea of Rhun. What they mean to accomplish there is a mystery.
Territory: The Orocarni and their environs, nominally. Relevantly, the Sea of Rhun and Mountains of Rhun.
Strength: Sixthousand and five hundred Red Dwarves, with a great host of twenty thousand Easterlings, a retinue of one hundred Black Numenoreans, and a curious assortment of war-beasts
Notable Artifacts: Fimblefir, Mor's staff, and Smithsung, Rome's staff

Ai, damn, this is incredibly difficult. There is so much here to work with, and I can only choose one idea. So, at first, I was going with Khamûl the Black, to act as a counter to the Witch King. Khamûl would rule from Minas Tirith, renamed Minas Guruthos, like the Witch King rules from Minas Morgul.

But now... I wonder. There is so much more to this, I am a bit taken aback by all the choices. I will have to think a bit more...

The only thing I know for sure is that I am not going with Shelob. She triggers my arachnofobia too much.

Name: Saruman of Many Colours
Race: Istari, Maiar
Appearance:
Image
Role: Council to Lord Sauron, Commander of Forces in the West, Keeper of Orthanc
Motivations: Once, Saruman had been sure. His motivations, always and ever, was the destruction of Sauron, by whatever means necessary. Even in his clouded state, driven to madness by the possesed Seeing Stone in his possession, Saruman wished only for his downfall, and was driven to acting as his lieutenant in order to supplant him. A vain task, for in his efforts to destroy Sauron, he posed the very same threat to Middle Earth. To this end, he sought the One Ring, in order to harness its power and march his armies to Barad-Dur itself. Yet now, the Vision of Sauron has released the Palantir in Saruman's possession. While not entirely rid of his madness, he has regained some of his faculties. He still seeks the One Ring, and commands his armies to build vast machines of war to achieve it. But with the influence of Sauron slipping... More and more of his old mind is starting to return...
History: Saruman was one of the first to feel the loss of the Dark Lord from his Dark Tower. The Palantir, once wreathed in flame and shadow, was now clear, and Saruman felt that some weight had lifted. Yet, his cunning mind almost immediately suspected a trap. Not only that, but he suspected that other lieutenants of Sauron might not take the same precautions as he had. Almost overnight, he shifted his strategy. Luckily for him, Saruman had always foreseen some treachery by Sauron, so he was not entirely unprepared for the War amongst the Lieutenants. The devestation of Fangorn was doubled, with great foundery-cities being constructed at the foot of the Misty Mountains. There, large stores of arms were produced. The Rohirrim and their horses were put to use, the mindless Theoden selling his own people to Saruman for mere trinkets. Helms Deep, meanwhile, was turned into a second fortress, to secure Saruman's command over the Riddermark and the Gap of Rohan, through the latter he has started to construct a large wall and dam.

Saruman, seeing an opportunity, searches restlessly for not only the One Ring, but also for other artefacts. As Loremaster, Saruman knowns the ancient secrets of the world, and his minions and agents scour the world for famed weapons: the Palantiri, the Elven and Dwarven Rings of Power, the blade Narsil, the Rods of Radagast and Gandalf... The arrival of the Blue Wizards has made Saruman suspicious and weary, and he mistrusts his fellow Istari most of all. His search for Gandalf and Radagast has so far been unsuccesful.
Territory: The Wizard's Vale, Fangorn Forest, Rohan, the Gap of Rohan, Endewaith and Dunland up to the Greyflood, which Saruman dares not cross in fear that he leaves his Eastern borders undefended.
Strength: 40.000 Uruk-Hai, 6.000 Orc skirmishers, 5.000 War riders, some few hundred Orcish engineers, a few hundred cave trolls
Notable Artifacts: The Orthanc Palantir, his own staff, the Horn of Helm Hammerhand (to be smelted down into a Great Bombard)

For the territory, I did say that the Blue Bois have moved to Rhun, so even if they were to have dominions in the East it won't be important for the purposes of the RP.

I'll need the numbers before I can accept the app. I can give some rough estimations of what I'd find acceptable if that helps.

Ah, sure, that’s fine. Let’s call it the Mountains/Sea of Rhun then.

Hrm, 5k Red Dwarves, 20k Easterlings, and ~100 Black Numenoreans?

For the territory, I did say that the Blue Bois have moved to Rhun, so even if they were to have dominions in the East it won't be important for the purposes of the RP.

I'll need the numbers before I can accept the app. I can give some rough estimations of what I'd find acceptable if that helps.

Ah, sure, that’s fine. Let’s call it the Mountains/Sea of Rhun then.

Hrm, 5k Red Dwarves, 20k Easterlings, and ~100 Black Numenoreans?

Seems perfectly reasonable to me, though I do wonder what sons of Numenor are doing so far afield.

Fixed the numbers!
The name's James. James Usari. Well, my name is not actually James Usari, so don't bother actually looking it up, but it'll do for now.

No, you may apply as the Free Peoples, but they will probably play only a minor role in the story.

Smaug however, is already taken as an application has been started for him above.

Don't think so.

Free People specifically still exist in Lothlorien and I imagine in the far west too.

Don't think Smaug will work tho. Knights of Azorea was faster there.

EDIT: Whoops, sniped.

I really have no idea on numbers for the tributaries of Smaug. At the end of the day the Dragon himself is the tactical equivalent of an extremely smug thermonuclear missile, so I can understand if I should err on the lower side.
