"Never let any Government imagine that it can choose perfectly safe courses; rather let it expect to have to take very doubtful ones, because it is found in ordinary affairs that one never seeks to avoid one trouble without running into another; but prudence consists in knowing how to distinguish the character of troubles, and for choice to take the lesser evil." - Nicolo Machiavelli, The Prince

"They're hiding something," Rickard concluded.

"Of course they are," Savannah responded. "Refusing to turn over their findings from the alien ruins? Quickly followed with a purchase of four destroyers? Nobody moves that overtly unless they're plotting something. GreenWorld is preparing their dagger, so we ought to prepare for the possibility that we are the intended recipient of its sharp edge."

"Comes down to that fundamental choice in the end, doesn't it," she mused. "Only so many labour-hours our Society produces. Bread - or bullets?"

"It was a mistake opening dialogue with GreenWorld," Jonathan claimed. "It must mean something for a Nessie to be a Nessie, and this was in violation of that. The fact that we invited them to talk to them means that we wanted to talk - that we were not confident of getting what we wanted on our own strength, alone, as we always have. It is weakness that we've shown, and now they're jumping on it. This is what you get for trusting those foreign barbarians. They respect nothing but violence."

Rory sat brooding in the corner of the small office, accepting his veiled rebuke. There is no virtue in high politics, except victory. No sin, except defeat. What worth has your honour, when weighed against the hundred and twenty million lives that lie in the balance? None - no worth at all.

"The inspectors we sent were thorough," he did argue, nonetheless. "We even dismantled and reassembled their engines and power plants before any of their shuttles left the planet. Are we sure that GreenWorld snuck something off the planet?"

Perhaps unsurprisingly, that statement was met with disbelieving stares from everyone else in the room.

"They couldn't have taken anything big off the planet," Jonathan corrected. "But a small microchip can be hidden basically anywhere, and knowledge can be even more valuable than materials. Besides, we didn't check the crews' intestines, chest cavity, or the larger arteries - although in retrospect I guess we should have. You can smuggle quite a bit in the human body, as long as it's something that won't trip the detection sensors. Actually, Kalvijn, isn't that exactly how you--?"

"GreenWorld sifted through the entirety of what looks like a sizable extraterrestrial settlement and they supposedly came up with nothing of substance," Rickard added, interrupting Jonathan's reminiscence. "That's quite the extraordinary claim, and if you take extraordinary claims at face value without the extraordinary evidence to go along with it, you are a naive idiot."

"The problem is that there is little that we can really do to respond," Claire pointed out, continuing the discussion. "Our colony in the Masood system is still nascent and only partially-industrialised. Militarising our presence in space at this early stage in the great game will cripple our vital colonisation efforts. Even a small change in the base can make a critical difference when the exponent is large."

"Can we cripple their military from the inside? Surely we have some people in there, even if they're not in the right positions," Savannah suggested.

Kalvijn Stauning, of the innocently and euphemistically named Special Research Division, shook his head.

"Unlikely," he concluded, without even that much in the way of thought. "This isn't the Reunification Wars. The UN keeps its paperwork tight these days and it's no longer really possible to make people appear from nowhere to take up positions in the militaries and administrations of other Societies. We still have a few assets in GreenWorld we snuck in during the Reunification Wars, but they're irreplaceable and they know it."

Savannah grimaced.

"We proceed with our industrial policy as previously planned. If we divert resources away from that then GreenWorld is going to get the space supremacy they're clearly angling for without firing a shot or at all tarnishing their reputation. That cannot be allowed to happen."

"Just take the risk that GreenWorld might attack before we're ready, then?" Jonathan asked. "That's quite the bold move."

"As you say yourself, Jonathan, it must mean something for a Nessie to be a Nessie," Savannah confirmed. "We have our veil, so let's use it. Kalvijn? How much of an underbelly does GreenWorld have?"

Kalvijn gave a feral smile.

"GreenWorld? Oh, plenty. They're a far more dispersed Society than our own is, geographically, and they haven't embraced a closed society as much as we needed to after the Reunification Wars. Scandal exposes, organised strikes, bureaucratic failures on their subcontractors and customers... there are ways."

"Investigate the possibilities," Savannah ordered. "Plausible deniability, as usual, nothing that can be pinned on us in a United Nations court of justice, but something that GreenWorld will suspect that we had a hand in. Being a hassle is all we can do at this point, but there's no reason why Mister Ernskein needs to know that. Let them know that we are fully able and eager to make our displeasure known for them hiding their Masood I alien secrets from us, and let them concern themselves over how we might respond should they go for overt aggression."

"Perhaps paired with a demand that GreenWorld accept tighter and more thorough inspections on their activities in the Masood system," Jonathan suggested. "That way there's no need for Kalvijn to take larger risks trying to strike the balance with anonymity - the timing of our demand will be message enough on that front, and he can focus on covering our tracks."

"Sure," Savannah agreed. "As I said, investigate the possibilities, and get back to me on those as soon as you can."

High Orbit, Alfdis I, Alfdis System

"That's impossible."

The response from the spectrograph analyst was an eloquent shrug. He wasn't a cosmologist, to explain the differences in stellar formation, orbital periods, and the Goldilocks zone - even if he did understand those differences.

Captain Valerian muttered under his breath about unhelpful subordinates, and checked the scans again. There was no doubt about it. Alfdis I was, by many measures, a paradise world. Sure, lacking a bit in the way of fauna and flora - there were hydrocarbons indicating organic life, but little more - but she had a breathable atmosphere, liquid water, and ice - ice! Ice! At an orbital period so close to the sun that her hothouse should put Venus to shame.

"Take us down, helm."

His superiors would have him flayed alive then keelhauled in the vacuum if he didn't catalog this system for immediate settlement, and they would be right in their fury. There was scuttlebutt in the grapevine that some of the other planets people were pulling down were remarkably fit for human settlement. Valerian had accounted those rumors as only so much nonsense and wishful thinking. But this world, Alfdis I... it gave at least an iota of credence to those rumors.

Outbound Research Outpost
Achises III (Sector 205)
January 5, 2060 (Sunday)

Rhys rolled over in the dark and groped for his alarming phone next to his bed. The lights in his bunk slowly started raising slowly as he lifted the device up to his eyes. He thumbed over the messages and read the anticipated message from the Director’s office. Assignment: Area Clearance. The title gave him an idea. The rest of the message included his management and the the designated area among other details. He rolled out of bed. The report in time left him with less then an hour to get ready, fed and to the east transit port.

That was the pace of life now. Things changed by the day.

Atlantis, Open Space, Sector 407
January 4th 2060

A dozen lead remote sensing specialists, the technicians among the Outbound project who focused on radio signals, spectral analysis and other sensing technologies, stood clutching their coffee cups and staring at a stellar map of Sector 407 as it float idly in the large visualization tank. It was early by UTC standards, but the meeting time was planned for an hour before emergence time for good reason. The team wanted to have the time to strategize and refamiliarize themselves with the system before they were called upon to do a hundred times more with the Atlantis’s massive array of telescopes, spectrometers and other more esoteric detecting devices.

The coffee was going quickly as the team struggled to push themselves awake. They would be called upon to act fast. The reports coming out of Achises team - the team they thought would just be joining them after a week’s delay - were almost unbelievable. And that was the least of it - the rumors coming through about the other interstellar factions of nearly earth like worlds and nearly daily expansion was putting intense pressure on the leaders of the Project.

Dr. Frost would want results in hours.

Xenoarcheology
The hull is about as wide as a standard Dreadnaught, with what appears to be several guns on the ship's top deck, inside the massive green tube-like structure, it appears that the ship has suffered several hits from a explosive projectile before crashing into the surface, The explorers manages to recover several devices, that appears to be melee weapons.

These can be brought back to a research station to investigate further, or you could just sell them on the legal, or black market.

4/1/2020
Kanchana II orbit
Sector 505

"Well, that's disappointing."
Captain Segal had received the results of Kanchana II scans. What it had revealed was that the atmosphere of this seemingly Earth-like planet actually had a low percentage of oxygen. Even with its vast oceans, the oxygen was being removed from the atmosphere by other elements before conditions suitable for human life could develop. In its current state, the most abundant gas was hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Although basic bacterial life would eventually oxygenate the atmosphere via mass photosynthesis, this would take a few millions years.
Segal decided that this planet would have to do. Going out any further would be a bad idea. If humanity could colonise planets with far worse conditions in their only Star System, then they could certainly colonise one with near-habitable conditions too.
After a moment, she reached for a nearby console and accessed the communication system.
"This is Captain Segal speaking. Prepare to deploy the hab unit.

Result:
Hab unit established on Kanchana II.
Order for 2 MFM processors and 1 MFM fabricator are sent out from Venus to Earth.
Caelus Enterprises (Venus) continues to gain resources (9 more).

Yugoslavia's back baby...

How the hell did this happen?
Well...we don't actually know. Just sort of happened one day.
Is it a reunited Yugoslavia in the 21st century? Is a rebel colony world in the far future? Is it a race of cyborg neo-life at war with any assimilating organisms they come across in the far far future? Who knows, who cares?
New Yugoslavia just is.

Outbound Research Outpost
Achises III (Sector 205)
January 6, 2060 (Sunday)

“First load of the alien goods.” the technician said as he stacked crates in the warehouse next to one of the laboratory complex’s entrance. The speed they were moving caused the scientist trying to catalogue the changes to raise an eyebrow. “Don’t worry,” he added, as though trying to preempt the coming concern, “Everything was documented in suto before we packed them up - and this is all the easily portable stuff.

The staff researcher sighed, loaded the pictorial packing list onto his data pad and started flipping through, trying to come up with some reasonable groupings to send them into the laboratory for tests.

“Not exactly a garden planet.” One of the analysts quipped as the next round of atmospheric data on Cala-I was transmitted from the orbiting cruiser.

“At least it has an atmosphere.” Came the inevitable response. “More than can be said about the ice ball below us.”

Surveys/Prospecting scans
The Planets that were scanned and prosecuted seems to hold pretty decent deposits of Matierials, And could be easily harvested by colonists

Exploration, Alien Ship/day 2
The explorers find what us believes to be the ship's Cargo hold, a rather green space filled with debris and spherical containers, one explorer attempts to grab one of the containers, but the Ship's security system is triggered, and a Blade pierce's the explorer' chest, killing him almost instantly,

Whatever was in that contianer, The aliens didnt want anybody to touch it.

Result: Cargo bay discovered, 1 explorer brutally murdered
