How is science viewed in your nation's society, and why is that? At best, science (and academia in general) is viewed as a useless waste of time. At worst, it's viewed as Satan worship. The reason has to do with the Holy Catholic State being an extremely conservative and traditional society, where progress and change are met with incredible hostility. The Portuguese would rather trust their Church, which has been around for millennia in some form or other, as opposed to a bunch of upstarts who only really gained traction in the last century. As written by Civil Director Afonso Salazar: "Portugal, without her Church and her traditions, is worse than no Portugal at all. A Portugal without Salazar is a Portugal not worth living in."
