Op-Ed: The Banijan Joint Service Academy All-Stars will be a fun watch. But can they bring home a country?


Many of us joyfully remember our days at the academy, if we indeed were at the academy. Who doesn't remember college fondly? We all know our own college experience was different. Early wake-ups. No parties. But foundational.

We're all used to rivalries between our four schools. And that's OK! Imagine if Northern and Loyola-Istria tried to put a joint team together in, well, anything. It'd fall apart. You know, the gridiron team, to add atmosphere, almost had a joint Northern and Loyola-Istria marching band. Almost. There was so much in-fighting between the schools, and the marching band directors allegedly nearly came to blows. The proposal never went public- so they quietly nixed the idea.

So rival schools working together like this in sports.... Is rare in Banija, to say the least. Of course, we lived in a sports crazed universe- and Banija is certainly no exception. We obsess over our college sports though. So there were big concerns coming in that this team would fall towards in-fighting.

And look! We've actually got a fun team to watch for once. It's only been one game, but the Joint Service Academies already look like a blast that gets along. Ateh Dika pitched 7 strong innings, only allowing two runs. We've got all sorts of fun people after that. Forcolo Ngele coming out of the pen, six up and six down. Thoriso Oupanyana pitched the bottom of the 10th. Allowed a leadoff double to put the winning run in scoring position, but then got the next three batters to strike out. I liked how the manager wasn't afraid to keep him in, either. Pitch through the bad situation.

And then, of course, Musa Mobika hitting a home run in the top of the 11th. And Ouma Obong'o had the 1-2-3 save. All in all, great game. Great watch! I'm planning on going to Okakameb myself to watch a couple of group stage games. Especially against the Lions- Nova Anglicana are certainly the favorites, aren't they?

It'll be a fun tournament, and a fun group for sure. Tomorrow we've got a legitimate true freshman pitching. Rameses Ngolu. Tall and skinny. A southpaw. Just 18 years old. And heck, they're being managed by a military veteran themselves- Augusto Mariano. Clap for him! It'll be a truly fun clash between a pair of fun teams. Banija forever though, right?

-- The names have changed, a new year started. and the Junior Daskies are back into International action. Daskies managed to win game one in the very last inning of the game, three runs in dramatic fashion led by Komatsubara Kenji, outfielder from Kaisho koukou. We had an insider from Sakamoto Hiroshi, who led a really different team for this tournament.

N: Mr Sakamoto, it's a pleasure to have you here in C8
S: It's always a nice experience to be here

N: Last game was intense
S: Surely it was! Our lead was very shortlived, just half an inning! I didn't want to feel defeated that moment through. Daskelian high school baseball have taught me and those kids that anything is possible

N: Even winning with three runs in the ninth
S: Even that! Komatsubara was brilliant in his at-bat. That double put ourselves in the best place to tie it, let alone win it

N: And Seri did his job
S: He absolutely monopolized the moment

N: Now let's talk about the team. I want the insider -laughs-. Tell me, how different has been your work with this generation of Daskies?
S: Oh my...
*laughs*
S: It's my first rotation with the U18 national team, but not my first High School baseball rotation. We have 12 new members. 12! That was a lot.

N: It should be chaotic
S: Some parts were really chaotic. I'm happy that every change and promotion is working good. Inukai had a difficult situation yesterday, but we will work on it. Tomo will pitch tomorrow's game against Bohemia Buccaneers

N: Any reason to start with two experienced pitchers?
S: I want to give the new pitchers the confidence in the team. I strongly trust Tomohiro to give a good performance on the mound. I have talked with his High School coach, and he have developed nicely this year.

N: How's Imada faring?
S: I'm quite surprised with him. Taking Takaoka's place was not a easy feat, but he's reliable behind the mask. Our second catcher will be playing game 5, through.

N: With Takashima?
S: Tadanobu is one of our youngest players. I want to see him perform with an experienced pitcher, and Takashima has a good record with group stages. I believe it'll be a good experience for both pitcher and catcher.
N: I see

N: Now, next game. Bohemia Buccaneers is a new team, but you and me know that new teams can absolutely be a threat
S: Yeah, of course I know that first-hand
*laughs*

N: What will be your stategy?
S: We do not have much data, so we will play with caution. If I see a good opportunity, I'll take it, of course. Daskelian baseball is a sport of opportunities after all. Expect our healthy share of good base running. The new guys are quick.

N: Thank you, Mr Sakamoto. Best of lucks for the next game!
S: I hope to live to everyone's expectations. See you on the road!

Bangers' bat run Valhalla cold in Quebec defeat
Missed opportunities, Blunt's wavering control costly at IBS

The Breton Valley Bangers outhit the Quebec Under-22 squad, but left an astonishing 12 men on base in a 4-1 loss for their second game of the 13th International Baseball Slam in Banija.

Breton Valley tallied ten hits and only failed to reach base in a single inning, but went hitless with runners in scoring position and went 0-for-3 with the bases loaded. It further exposed a problem revealed in the Bangers' extra-innings victory over Bohemia, in which they left 10 men on base and failed to further extend their early lead, allowing the Buccaneers to eventually force the tenth inning.

"It's tough to just miss opportunities," said first baseman Jack Russo, who batted 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. "We're setting them up just fine, we know exactly how to get on base. The past two days, we're just not closing the deal."

"I think perhaps it's a mental problem?" posed second baseman Ryan Rudock, the walkoff hero of the Bohemia victory. "We clearly know how to hit when the pressure's not as high. But it's a new scenario for us in this competition, I think we're all just pushing a little bit. We've got to stay in the moment and just execute like we know how."

The Bangers, in fact, often benefited more from erratic Quebecois pitching than their own bats. They took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second - after a Pavel Malek single and a Rudock double, the Quebecois starter intentionally walked Lauri Vatanen to load the bases. But Thomas Blunt, the pitcher, worked a 1-2 count to eventually walk on his own, sending Malek and recording an RBI for his own cause. But with the bases still loaded at just one out, Ilkka Salonen struck out looking and Valery Robiquet grounded into a force out at second to limit the offense to one run.

That lead would be short lived as Blunt surrendered a home run with one out in the bottom of the second. Blunt was largely in command, striking out twelve batters with no walks in eight innings, but didn't have quite enough break on his curveballs at crucial moments. The fourth inning was particularly atrocious as Blunt allowed two hits to start the inning, then appeared tentative as he eventually surrendered two more hits and two runs total. In the fifth inning, he struck out the first two batters and was ready to retire the side, but a ground ball bobbled by Salonen at third extended the frame, and Blunt gave up an RBI double on the next pitch.

From there, Blunt retired the final ten batters he faced. Asked if he was surprised to be left in for so long, he replied, "Not particularly. For 90% of the game, I was dialed in, my fastball was great, I was putting away batters without too much effort. It was just a few balls I wish I could have back."

"We really needed to do more for him," Malek added. "They were just way more efficient at getting their guys around the bases. We wasted chances, and we owe it to our pitchers to put up more than one run."

The Bangers appeared on the verge of scoring multiple times in the remainder of the game, but never capitalised. They threatened to close the 4-1 lead in the sixth, starting with a leadoff walk by Russo and a Malek single that chased the Quebecois starter. The reliever struck out Rudock and forced out Russo on a Vatanen grounder, before Blunt hung in to walk again and load the bases. But Salonen struck out for the second time in that scenario to put an end to the surge.

In the seventh, Robiquet got started on his own with a single and stolen base, but was caught in no man's land as Teuvo Kujala lined out to shortstop with Robiquet halfway to third, giving the shortstop an easy unassisted double play. And in the ninth, Aymeric Dupont got himself a pinch-hit triple, but couldn't advance home as a Clark groundout and a Russo strikeout ended the game.

"It was a really frustrating day," Malek admitted. "The heat got to us a bit, and we just weren't ready for the right moments... It sucks, because with the scenarios we landed in, it almost feels unlucky. But we know that's not true, we know it's our fault and we have to do better."

Breton Valley will look to redeem themselves against Osci Talenti, who are 1-1 in their own right after a 3-1 victory over the Stars. "They're a very similar team to us," left fielder Owen Clark noted. "They're really quick, play great small ball, they've got a deep pitching staff, but their bats have maybe been a bit cold too... and they're pretty young like a lot of our guys.

"It's a great matchup, and I think it's one both of us need to win. We want to clean up our mistakes so it'll be us with the victory."

Right-hander Yannick Ronan is scheduled to take the start for the Bangers, although it is thought that manager Joran Perrot may employ the "opener" strategy with Marion Mathis taking the first few innings. Fermín Olmo is expected to take the mound for the Osci collegiate all-stars.

Lions' bats fall silent against Jirachi university squad


In the International Baseball Slam, teams from many different levels compete against each other to try to win this mid-cycle tournament. Teams range from U13s to over-50 All-Stars. As such, games can end in any number of ways and it's not wise to underestimate any one team. Case in point: the Nova Anglicana Lions, who are all professional minor-league players, faced a U21 team from Silvedania and defeated them, 7-3. Then, the next day, they took on a university team from the nation Luck of Jirachi, and only scratched out one run in a 2-1 loss.

The Jirachi team featured players from age 17 to age 25, which, in our mind, stretches the definition of "university team". But to each their own. The Holy Warriors sent Marat Batyruli, a 6'2, 230 pound, 23 year old who would have long graduated in Nova Anglicana. But these kind of players are common in the Nova Anglican minor leagues, so it should not have been a big deal to face someone like Batyruli. Unfortunately, the Lions were not able to muster much against this burly hurler. After Batyruli allowed just one hit his first time through the order, Michael "Mac" McCray led off the fourth inning with a walk. Nick McAllister struck out swinging, but Rob Patten lined a single to right, and McCray astutely went from first to third on the play. Roscoe Meacham followed with a deep fly ball that drove Josiah Talyev back to the warning track, but the Jirachi center fielder hauled it in and limited the damage to a sacrifice fly. As for the rest of the day, Batyruli scattered two more hits and a walk across three innings, departing after the seventh inning having allowed just six baserunners and one run. After Serik Laffitte set down the side in order in the eighth, 19 year old Marcus Thierry took the mound in the ninth. Scott Elston pinch-hit for Patten, but flied out deep to left. Meacham grounded harmlessly to Sergei Tilekov at short, and while Jack Corcoran's single provided a brief bit of hope, Alain Gosselin could only manage a tapper back to the mound, which ended the game.

On the pitching side of things, right-hander Gabe Nichols took the mound. Nichols is known for his spike curveball, and for his numerous transitions between starter and reliever. Here, he got off to a poor start, allowing runs in each of his first two innings. Alisher Oripov lashed an RBI double in the first inning, and the solidly-built catcher Amir Taymetov blasted one into the seats in the second inning, giving the Holy Warriors a 2-0 lead. However, after this poor showing, Nichols settled down. He issued one walk and three hits over the next five innings, along with six strikeouts, giving a final line of 7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, a good overall showing. He was just out-pitched by Batyruli. Kerry Mercer walked two and struck out two in the eighth, and Mitch Ballard retired the side in order in the ninth.

All in all, it was a disappointing effort after the strong start against Silvedania. However, in that game, the Lions scored no runs for the first five innings, so their offense is clearly having a little trouble. When the Lions take on Saint-Maire - Les Espadons, the team from Somiens-et-Haveras, they will have to start early. In defeating them 11-2, Silvedania scored 10 runs in the first four innings. If the Lions replicate that, they will surely win. If their early game looks more like their first two games, there's no telling if they'll win or lose. Let's hope this team of minor leaguers, desperate for big-league jobs, will pick up the pace and perhaps become the first team from Nova Anglicana to advance past the group stage.

OOC: Luck of Jirachi said "Follow my pitching rotation", but did not provide an official pitching rotation, so I selected the second pitcher on the roster listed as a starter.

The International Debut of the Baseball Team in Banija

As the Warriors took the field against the experienced Banijan Joint Service Academy All-Stars, confidence solid small-ball play gave the first run to the Warriors. However, the All-Stars quickly answered back in the second inning, putting up four consecutive hits and two runs off of Chagatai Asharikov, the Year 4 pitcher from rural east Kapital Ter. This game seemed to be a back-and-forth affair; the third inning yielded another Warriors run off of an Amir Taymetov triple and a Nikolai Nayerov sacrifice fly. Then the bats were silenced; the All-Stars’ Ateh Dika shut out the Warriors for four more innings, and Asharikov gave 4.2 more scoreless innings. Serik Laffitte handled the end of the eighth inning, defining efficiency with forcing a ground ball with his first pitch. Marcus Thierry came in to close, holding the All-Stars to two zeros in the 9th and 10th innings; but as he began to tire, the decision to have him throw a third inning proved fatal. After recording one out, a pop fly from the Center Fielder Boto Jassey, Musa Mobika, the hard hitting senior from the Banijan Naval Academy, came to bat with victory in mind. A towering 418-foot blast to right center put the All-Stars up by a run. The flamethrower closer from Banija, Ouma Obong’o, proved to have the longevity to outperform Thierry, and recorded a quick three outs to end the game. After the game, the coach declined to comment on his team’s performance.
Banijan Joint Service Academy All-Stars - 3 Holy Warriors - 2

Today, we all got up bright and early to watch the game in Nova Anglicana.
Facing off against another very high-ranked team, the Nova Anglicana Lions, the Warriors looked like they had everything to prove and nothing to lose. Marat Batyruli got the start against the Lions’ Gabe Nichols. They both pitched a strong seven innings, with Nichols allowing only two more hits and one more run. But the Warriors once again drew first blood, with Alisher Oripov and Amir Taymetov recording RBI’s in the first and second innings, respectively. The low spot of the day, however, was the 11 strikeouts that the Lions put past the Warriors today; Nichols put up eight, Kerry Mercer threw a pair, and Mitch Ballard put up one. Other than that, the Warriors looked extremely strong, with the pitching staff allowing five total hits and walking only three. Walstreim Lions:

The Lions fell just short of the title last year after claiming the best record in the regular season. They sure wanted to get back in the fight for the title, strengthened by new players in Chan Ford from Drawkland; alongside two Chromatik players in first baseman Gammond and Relief pitcher Salle. Despite this, the team coached by Lowe was seen as one of the weaker ones in the league. They were able to thrive anyway, taking their division with a rock-solid 44 wins. They had some trouble finding the right balance in the team at first, with the new players not knowing each other too well; and they were only 11-10 at one point. Despite that, they picked up the pace, and won their division by far.
Big win:
MD62: Walstreim Lions 8-2 Ratzupalfu Rhinos
It wasn’t their biggest win of the season, but it stands symbolically for the Lions dominating the Rhinos. Their grey division rival was expected to put up a tough fight, but the Lions took 6 of 8 games against their big rival they had lost against in the final last year.
Big game:
MD23: Walstreim Lions 10-9 St. Riecarn Saints
In the middle of a four-game series at home against the Saints, the Lions fought a tough back-and-forth shootout with their division mates. The Saints had been leading by four late, but the Lions were able to tie it up in the bottom of the ninth, sending this game to extras. Down 9-10 in the eleventh, Ford hit a game winning double for two runs.
Big loss:
MD15: Sun City Flames 9-2 Walstreim Lions
The Lions did lose some big games at times, especially early in the season. Sometimes, they got completely outclassed by weaker teams; like in this game.


Ratzupalfu Rhinos:

The Rhinos, after winning it all last season despite a mediocre record, were expecting to pull off a great season yet again. That ultimately didn’t happen at all, despite the signing of two Ko-orenite talents; and while their batting remained decent, the defense was struggling yet again. Ryan Hunter, their ace, didn’t exactly play a good season, and in the end, the team just didn’t have the pieces to pull off a big season. Fu Webb was surely trying his hardest, but he couldn’t make any miracles happen; putting their playoff spot in jeopardy for the entire season.
Big win:
MD53: Ratzupalfu Rhinos 12-0 Rüsselsheim Blue Sox
This team could play baseball, that was for sure, and they proved it in this game, easily besting the Blue Sox. However, they still had a negative record at the time.
Big game:
MD6: Masmow Dragons 10-4 Ratzupalfu Rhinos
Early in the season, the Rhinos had to play the Dragons. They lost 8-1 and 10-4, making clear that this team had tons of work to do.
Big loss:
MD66: Elephant Valley Homers 14-3 Ratzupalfu Rhinos
This blowout to the Homers sent the Rhinos to a 30-36 record; already ensuring they would not get above .500. They weren’t out of the playoffs yet, but they would have to turn things around quickly and hope for the best; after just losing five games in a row. They managed to win 5 of their last six, with the last game at least ensuring that they jumped over the Saints; but they would still have to hope for some help.


St. Riecarn Saints:

The Saints were able to prove that expansion teams can play baseball. Mo Darrell didn’t have too much to work with, but tried his best to create a strong team around his centre-pieces, Stuart Hernandez from Tikariot and Shawn Zimmerman. That worked fairly well, and the Saints picked up the pace late in the season to remain in the playoff race. Between macthes 30 and 58, they went 20-9, suddenly turning themselves into a team with a shot at the postseason. Of course, they had only been 9-20 up to that point, so things were still unclear, but the roster proved to be competitive.
Big win:
MD3: St. Riecarn Saints 12-3 Masmow Dragons
They proved their strength on matchday 3, when they beat up the Dragons in the first ever match they played in their home stadium.
Big game:
MD39: Masmow Dragons 0-3 St. Riecarn Saints
They even went back to Masmow and managed to beat them again. This time, their Ko-orenite pitcher Ienaga Vineno even managed a shutout against the Dragons.
Big loss:
MD72: Ratzupalfu Rhinos 8-3 St. Riecarn Saints
The Saints went into the last game still alive, one game ahead of the Rhinos. They lost to Ratzupalfu, dropping below them. With a third-place finish and a negative record, they would surely be out of the postseason. Right?


Sophie City Girls:

After a bad season last year, the Girls really hoped to improve. They had a few talented players, like Emily Innis from Super-Llamaland pitching; or the two South Newlandian stars in Smiths and Lawrence; but it didn’t go their way. They were somewhat in it through the first half, and them stumbled into two losing streaks of seven and six, interrupted in the middle by eight wins in a row. Somehow. Anyway, the were not dead late in the season, but only one win in the last seven games snapped their neck.
Big win:
MD10: Sophie City Girls 12-1 Chekar Tigers
Big blowouts for the Girls were few and far between, but there were a few, like this one. Nevertheless, the weak performance ultimately saw Alise Rocha resigning as head coach.
Big game:
MD18: Elephant Valley Homers 5-6 Sophie City Girls
One thing the Girls did manage to do was to annoy the Homers, taking two games off of them. This win came in extra innings, with Sophia Smiths scoring the game winning run in the twelfth inning.
Big loss:
MD32: Sophie City Girls 2-13 Southwestern Baselanders
Being blown out on home field is never fun, but it’s even worse when it happens to one of the worst teams of the league.

Piece 2 - Blue

The water over the bridge was almost too tempting, as Asher Lundrigan and Eileen de Ramaut slowly walked over the L.J. Hardwick Bridge, the Montreal end of the bridge in her sight. This was her first day outside after almost a week staying in her flat. At two in the afternoon, the cool summer air that transversed between the island of everything and its South Shores struck in almost every direction. She walked along the cold, iron railings of the Bridge, as she looked out into the river. Below her the container ships were slowly sailing, making their ways to the port out on far west end near the Regimbault Airport, while the cruise ships, in middle of the Summer season, were docked with dozens of flags and passengers flocked over and beyond the deck. It was a slow walk, but the views from the walk across the bridge, where you could see the impressive sights all the way to the East End, were worth the wind blowing all over her face. Eileen sometimes saw people, walking into their lives, look at her with surprise, but fortunately let her be without much surprise due to the spot's popularity. Of course, the person at the northern end of the bridge found it somewhat surprising.

Well don't just stand there for me, you idiot! That's what Eileen had in mind, as she watched him stare back with amusement, before slowly walking back to her.

To be fair, that was a dick move on their part. Earlier in the day, they were counting on how many steps they had needed, and made a bet on whether it would take exactly 3071 or 4567 steps to cross the bridge. The rule of the thumb was that the bridge had to be crossed with that exact number, and whoever could walk faster and with correct number of steps would win. Unfortunately (and fortunately, depending on whom you're asking), there was no winner- while Asher, who had guessed 3,071 steps, had arrived ten minutes ago, he had done so on 3,217 hurried steps and therefore missed out, while Eileen was going to arrive later.

But neither had remembered what they were making a bet for in the beginning, and as the sunlight hit their faces, Eileen couldn't help but to notice how Asher looked completely different on a grey tee-shirt, with scuffled hair no different than in the morning, and the gaze he looked at her, as he ran. Eileen was used to the initial months of snapchat exchanges and lots of messages, and the initial five days where they were just casually dressed and did nothing but just lying about on her flat. But here, he looked somewhat drunk.

'Is all good?' Asher panted, finally stopping about ten steps before her. She stopped, before giving him a tug, and he stood up from an awkward position Asher found himself earlier. 'Okay, you took forever, let's admit it.'

'C'mon, it was you who forgot about it.' Eileen responded, giving a light smile as they started walking their way back. 'At least you didn't take forever.' It was true- Asher was bad with remembering time, usually due to not calculating time correctly, and he was bad with remembering time.

'Sorry, my bad. As always.' Asher said, still catching his breath while embarrassed. 'But god, this bridge is long. Not doing this again.' He tapped his hands together twice. 'What do you wanna do? You're not going to the studio today, no?'

'Nah, that's not until August. Let's just not think about it- I read it somewhere that the Vendome Circus has this candy store...' Eileen answered with anticipation, as she grabbed his hands and they walked together. 'Apparently it's a fun one, with the latest Oregano and Corn chips mixed in...'

'Yuck, sounds....interesting though.' Asher raised his eyebrows, amazed with some of the experiments they had come up with on the initial days. 'You sure that's the one near the station? I'm sure there gotta be better fun places.' Asher had joined her three days ago, on the very flat she had moved in two days prior, and they so far had some interesting experiences. Only three days had passed since then, yet enough whoopsie daisies had flown between them that was going to mark their first summer in the Smokey M. In those three days, they rarely left Eileen's three-room flat door, only to pick up pizza delivery, watch the crowds come and go, and maybe grab the mail by the mailbox on the first floor. Enough of those hours between, of course, were spent listening to music, chatting about music, or watch occasional television broadcasts of powerhouse Kingston Tigers or ever-so-unlucky Saint John Green Sox (last night's score? Saint John Green Sox 8-7 Kingston Blue Jays).

They had spent far too much time chatting about something so trivial in between as well, and the constant distractions of their family's winks via social media didn't help either. Not that they mattered though, for chemistry was abound either way. 'Okay, but you'll like what I picked up this morning on mail, right after...' Eileen winked, trying to distract Asher from some form of horror.

'Hasa Diga: the musical ticket?' Asher asked, being reminded of the 2027 Musical he had wanted to watch so badly, but had no time.

'Close, apparently Knowing Me Knowing You matinee is on, so they mailed me the tickets,' she said with a smile, quickly grabbing the two tickets out of her denim jacket pocket. 'Ta-da!'

'Alright, may as well try those new biscuits and chips then.' Asher giggled, amused with how his mind could change so quickly with a reward. To be fair, he, being a Quebecois, was also a creature of gifts, and musical theatre gifts happened to be one of those he had taken to liking too often. 'So should we go home first, or go straight to the circus?'

IBS: Three pitchers combine for Bangers shutout
Home runs from Clark, Rudock lead the way over Osci Talenti

Marion Mathis, Yannick Ronan, and Sean Magary combined for a six-hit shutout as the Breton Valley Bangers rebounded from their previous loss to ease to a 4-0 victory over the Osci Talenti at the 13th International Baseball Slam in Banija.

"Our pitching staff, like a good story, had a great beginning, middle, and end today," manager Joran Perrot said. "We have a lot of pitchers who can go for a long time, but the rotation and bullpen functions just as well when everyone plays their role. It was a brilliant performance."

Perrot was particularly referencing the opener role of Marion Mathis, who pitched the first three innings, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts in turning through the Oscioru collegiate all-stars' batting order once and change, overwhelming them with the fastball. Yannick Ronan, more known for his breaking balls and off-speed pitches, also allowed three hits across five innings, with five K's, and was credited with the victory. Sean Magary closed the game with a routine ninth inning, striking out two hitters for his first save of the tournament.

"We used a different strategy today, and it really paid off," Mathis said. "We knew they were a good team, a bunch of smart young players, so we kept throwing them different looks and didn't give them a chance to settle in. Yannick and Sean and I were dialed in and the defense really took care of business behind us. It was a little cooler tonight, what we're used to. We felt really comfortable out there."

Asked about the scorekeeping oddity, under which Mathis does not receive the win for not recording five innings in the start, he replied, laughing, "As a pitcher, you'll go crazy worrying about your own wins and losses. A lot of shit can happen in nine innings. As long as we each go in and do our part, and one of us ends up with a win, that's all that matters."

On the other side of the ball, the Bangers took the lead on a solo home run from Ryan Rudock in the second inning, and the lone run turned out to be all that was necessary. But in the fifth inning, starting pitcher Fermin Olmo began to tire, and the Bangers finally managed to open up the game, in part due to Perrot's strategy of batting his pitcher eighth. This allowed Ilkka Salonen, batting ninth in front of leadoff Valery Robiquet, to lead off the inning with a walk. Salonen advanced to third on Robiquet's single, and Robiquet stole second base uncontested with Salonen threatening to take home on the throw. Teuvo Kujala flied out to left, and the throw from Battista Gallego instead came to third to hold off Robiquet, allowing Salonen to score the run easily. Owen Clark's two-run shot on the next pitch made the score 4-0, and Olmo was replaced by Jeremias Adamo after hitting Jack Russo with an errant curve. Adamo eventually the inning with no further damage done.

The Bangers threatened again in the seventh inning, loading the bases with singles by Kujala and Clark, a force-out of Kujala as Russo got on base, and a Rudock walk. But Etienne Echevarria put an end to the potential disaster for the Talenti, striking out Lauri Vatanen looking on a full count. As it turned out, Breton Valley had already done enough, as Ronan and Magary mowed through their eighth and ninth innings.

"It wasn't a perfect game on offense today," admitted Rudock, who reached base on three of four plate appearances (one home run, one HBP, one walk), "and we're still trying to get guys all the way around the bases. In that regard, today was not good, but it was better. And with our pitchers as good as they've been, what we did today was enough. If we keep coming along like this, we'll be in good shape in the later rounds."

The Bangers (2-1) are in second place in Group A played at Kabaka's Military College in Dimbogourou, as the Quebec U22 team continues to set the pace at 3-0, and the remainder of the group tied at 1-2. The Bangers have the slim advantage for knockout placement, but have little room for error or collapse going forward. They next face the Sarzonia U21 Stars, and for the Hessian players who lost to the senior Stars in the round of 16 at WBC49, it will be a welcome opportunity to get a game back.

"They're a great program," Clark said, "and we have a little bit of back-and-forth. It's our turn to win one, so we definitely want it. But moreover, we need the win for this competition, to advance further, so that's what matters and that's what we're focused on.

Vatanen, relatively a veteran at 26 years old, fancies the Bangers' chances in the contest. "The Stars are talented, no doubt, but our age, our maturity, our experience and strength, that's all likely to matter here. If we play our best and they play their best, there's not really a doubt that this goes our way. So that's why we need to show up and execute, so this goes the way we want it."

The Stars rotation is expected to bring back ace Cal Zane for the contest, while Perrot will make a decision to either continue on with fourth starter Lucas Beaudoin, or turn to his own ace in Bedin Egozhevy.

After a great start and the victory of Neptun Taru against Xannerian Junior Maroons our young baseball promoters in the second match lost closely to Cassadaigu U18s.

It was a solid game in which they got the first substitution from Cassadaigu. Neptune Tara managed to turn it to 2-1 in the sixth inning. In the seventh shift there is a settlement.
Eighth was the key in which Cassadaigua turned the score around by getting that throw with 2: 1.

Today's game, however, has a different approach.
A change in the boys' behavior was seen. They came out much more concentrated, focused on the game, the approach was professional.
Opponent of the Super-Llamaland U13s tailor-made, a team that has amassed two wins in two games.
The match is solid and strong again. The first change of the first throw and the result was 1: 1, on the second no one managed to hit.
In the third throw, Neptun Tara make a difference and win with 2: 0!
Super-Llamaland U13s did not give up and in the fourth inning they scored and won the fourth throw with 1: 0!
By the end, neither team managed to make a difference and the result did not change in the end. Neptun Taru wins!

A Sarzonian Under 21 national baseball team without its biggest offensive threat has, predictably, struggled in the early going in the International Baseball Slam.

However, the Junior Stars opened the tournament against Daskel not with offensive struggles borne out of the aging out of shortstop and power threat Cristobal Vargas. It was a three-run ninth inning that sent Sarzonia to defeat in the opener.

"I had a talk with [closer Ned] Creighton after the Daskel match," manager Edwin Crawford said. "He was distraught. I wanted to reassure him that he was our closer for a reason."

Creighton got the ball to start the top of the ninth with Sarzonia clinging to a 3-2 lead and Daskel rallied for the victory.

The second match saw Sarzonia struggle offensively, as only one run scored en route to Sarzonia dropping to 0-2. The Junior Stars finally broke out in the third match with a four-run bottom of the fourth inning to draw the match level. Centrefielder Anderson Bradley finally launched his -- and the Junior Stars' -- first home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Sarzonia a two-run lead.

Creighton came into the match and worked a one-two-three ninth for the save.

"It felt good after I let the team down against Daskel," Creighton said. "Now we've got work to do against Breton Valley."

Creighton admitted later that he deliberately referred to the team's Delaclav opponents as Breton Valley rather than by the team's moniker, as a reporter asked him for a scouting report on the team, he burst out laughing when the reporter innocently said, "Bangers."

There were no reports on whether Creighton was going to seek out any female Delaclav supporters for a first-hand demonstration.

Are certain players considered better then others, at least?
Yes. Players higher on the list for each position are considered better.

What about starting pitchers?

Starting pitchers will not pitch more then five innings. Even if they have a perfect game going.

Isn’t your senior team all switch hitters? Why aren’t these people all switch hitters?
They have not fully established themselves hitting from the other side yet.

Why haven’t you included stats?
Because they would be high school stats; which mean .480 BA’s and the like, so since it’s not useful, no point in making up the numbers.

A 3-0 start sees the U-21 Pandas regain same form as last year

We all know last year the U-21 Pandas were one of the better teams at the 12th International Baseball Slam winning their group comfortably to reach the quarterfinals. With really only three losses to the squad in ace Allan Fox, power hitter Callie Dudley, and closer Maddy Lane all being brought up to the National Team and a shocking 0 players aging out this team has a chance to be even more dominant.

Kohnhead were drawn into Group D with some notable baseball nations like the Newmanistan U16s the U16 team of the recent World Baseball Classic bronze medalists. South Newlandia a team climbing the baseball rankings after reaching the knockouts all three of their competing years and moving up in the ranks to 11th shall be sending their U-22 team. The South Newlandian football team has ties to Kohnhead as they were in the same Baptism of Fire and multiple players on that team play in Kohnhead while one Kohnheadian on our National team plays in South Newlandia although our manager is from SNL. The cohosts of the last IBS shall be a good test for our squad to see if we can indeed regain the form we had last time around.

In addition some of the other teams sent include an over-35 team from Abanhfleft that we were able to beat quite easily, a domestic team from Ethane named Isle of Lowe United, and the U-21 team from rising nation in almost every sport Hebitaka. In addition for the rivalry match Kohnhead has agreed to take on the Breton Valley Bangers a club team out of Delaclava.

The top three in the group as predicted by most pundits watching the Slam was supposed to be us, South Newlandia, and Newmanistan although given the U-16 nature of the Newmanistan squad it's highly possible they don't fill that third spot. With that out of the way let's check in and see how the U-21 Pandas have done over the course of their first three games.

Everything went well for Kohnhead in this one with the team looking like it didn't miss a beat from last year. It didn't take long for the bats to show up big time as in the top of the second as we would score 6 runs. An Alvin Clayton double with two outs would score Fabien Norris and Wayne Quintero to make it a 2-0 game before following a walk from Fitzgerald, Cory Atkinson would hit a three run shot to make it a 5-0 lead. Megan Lewis would go belt a high pitch over the center field wall as well for back to back homeruns and to make it a 6-0 lead for Duncan Park.

One run a peice in the third and fourth innings would make it an 8-0 game and we would go on cruise control for there. Park was pulled midway through the 7th after having pitched an absolute gem and while Andrea Bellamy pitched an out of character poor 8th inning that saw him give up three runs, we still managed to get the easy win 9-3 with a solo homer from Clayton in the 9th.

Taking on another 1-0 team in our second match as Isle of Lowe United had just come off of an extremely entertaining and close win against South Newlandia 6-5 that saw them hold off a comeback attempt to just hold on to the win. This game was a lot closer than the last as our bats just couldn't get going in the same way they had against the U-35s which does make sense. One thing to note is that Oakley May our second pitcher and best right hander on the team pitched a fantastic game allowing only one run in a full eight innings.

We had gotten a run in the top of the second following a Fabien Norris double that scored Gordon Hays to give us the 1-0 lead and some thought that a similar situation to what had happened against Abanhfleft in the 2nd inning might occur. However we were unable to get a rally going and Isle of Lowe tied the game at 2 with a run of their own in the bottom of the second.

Kohnhead scored a run in the top of the 4th with Jules Wise going yard with the first home run she's ever gotten in international play after having not played last year on the bench. It had been a pitchers duel however with May on fire throughout this one and in the top of the 8th we'd get another run with Hays singling to bring in Atkinson to make it a 3-1 game. May would pitch out the eighth although did run into some trouble but escaped from the bases loaded jam with a key strikeout and so it was understood that she would be pulled by the 9th for new closer Mollie Cornish.

While Isle of Lowe was able to grab a run in the bottom of the ninth we held on to win 3-2 in a very close match that showed us that Isle of Lowe was here to compete but that the Pandas are looking very good. In addition with South Newlandia's defeat of the U-16s, Kohnhead now sat in sole place of 1st with a 2-0 record and everyone else was 1-1.

Speaking of the U16s out of Newmanistan our next opponenet was indeed Newmanistan and their U16s, while obviously these are younger children they do come from a baseball powerhouse and as we saw with the U11s last time around and are currently seeing with the U13s (basically the same team but older) out of Super Llamaland how much does age really matter? While Teddie McBride looked poor in the first inning allowing a run and what could have been more had we not gotten the runner out at homeplate.

However much like every other pitcher Kohnhead has sent out thus far McBride really settled in and pitched another gem. With the exception of the first game (where both were dominant) we are seeing that it's been more the pitchers that have been dominating for Kohnhead and not the batters which is pretty unexpected. The game remained 1-0 another pitching duel until the bottom of the eighth when the bats did something. Fitzgerald singled to bring home Day and two straight walks brough home Clayton to give us the 2-1 lead.

Unlike the day prior Cornish did not give up any runs in the final inning and Kohnhead would walk away with a close 2-1 victory. So what can we takeaway from the first three games, we can takeaway quite a fair bit actually. For starters we have seen that our pitching has been phenomenal and that the team can do potentially even better than the 4th place finish last season. However the hitting aside from our first game has been subpar to say the least and while we are 3-0, two of those wins have come by one run. I think the hitting will improve as time goes on but it will be interesting to see if Huerta makes a change to a 3-0 side and if she were to who would be replaced?

As you can see from the above standings, Kohnhead have been the best team although South Newlandia as expected have also been very good having scored 10 more runs than anyone else and have the best run differential. Kohnhead has had the best pitching only allowing six runs across three games and have the second best run differential only a few behind South Newlandia's. Isle of Low has had three one score games which would indicate that it's difficult to tell a lot about them however they beat both South Newlandia and Newmanistan with their other game coming against us.

Abanhfleft are also obviously still in this at 1-2 just like Newmanistan however they just haven't been all that good so far. Newmanistan will be playing from behind following their loss to Isle of Lowe and their 12-2 loss to South Newlandia leaves a lot to be desired. Hopefully Kohnhead can pull victory out with our next game coming against 0-3 Hebitaka before the all important matchup with South Newlandia in game 5.

The Banijan Joint Service Academy All-Stars have star worthy pitching, but is our offense good enough?


Like I said before, I would attend some games, and hear I am, watching the Joint Service Academy All-Stars! There are some interesting observations to make about this team, these players, and the rest of the teams in our group. Let's start out, however, with the facts.

This team is undefeated

You can't complain about 3-0 at home, can you? You cannot. We are in a good spot halfway through the group stage. We're 3-0. With 4 teams out of 6 moving from the group stage, it'd take a collapse of entirely epic proportions for us to miss the knockout stages at this point. 3 wins should be enough to get to the next round in a six game group stage, and that is good. We've still got the two best opponents on our group stage schedule in front of us, though- Nova Anglicana in our next game, and the Royal Kingdom of Quebec on Matchday 6.

Clearly, this team is a "pitching and defense win championships" kind of teams. We have a 3-2 victory, a 4-3 victory, and a 2-0 victory. Three tight games where out pitching came through, and without much offense, we managed to silence the bats of our opponents. There's nothing more rare than a young knuckle baller these days. And that is exactly how Sakeh Ahmadou pitched. A throwback to another era of baseball.

Most of these kids have probably never seen a knuckler throw at them in their life. And it was apparently. Lots of early swings, wild hacks- they were not ready for the slowed down pitch, and even though Ahmadou is only 20 years old, he was at an absolutely dominant level. 7 and 2/3s innings, just three hits and three walks. And we skipped the setup man. We brought in the flamethrowing Ouma Obong'o, who got a four out save.

Speaking of- how dominant has Ouma Obong'o been? Three saves in three games. It's a lot easier to win when the back end of the pen does its jobs. Obong'o has 10 recorded outs, with no earned runs, giving him a 0.00 ERA. He's got four strikeouts. When we get the ball to him, he's been Mr. automatic, so far. Hopefully we can manage to get him the ball against this terror of a Nova Anglicana offense?

The pitching kicks ass

I got into that a little above, but let's really take a dive into the numbers. In Game 3, obviously Ahmadou pitched 7 and 2/3s, while Obong'o pitched 1 and 1/3rd. A shutout. In Game 1, Dika had 7 innings and 2 earned. Ngele had 2 shutout innings. Oupanyana had a shutout inning. And Obong'o went 1-2-3 in the 11th. And in Game 2, Rameses Ngolu had six innings and only allowed one run. Embiid allowed no runs in the 7th inning, while Akem Zipayo and Yahouza split the 8th inning, each allowing an earned run themselves.

Knowing that, here are the stats of the Banijan pitching staff through three games.

Of course, the numbers from Zipayo and Alban Yahouza look shocking. But they've got a tiny sample size, and did really struggle in the 8th inning of their game. But they entered with a 4-1 lead, and left with a 4-3 lead. Not good. But enough to keep the lead, and Obong'o was able to closer the door.

Besides them two, our pitching has been elite across the board. We've got to continue that in Game 4, as Nova Anglicana showed the tournament just exactly how capable their offense is.

Our Offense... Not so inspiring

Our bats simply have not woken up during this tournament. 4, 3, and 2 runs has been enough to get three wins, yes, but it isn't enough if we want to be able to go far. We cannot have star pitching performances on every night if we want to get through the knockout stages. But that seems to be what we are relying on.

What is up with our bats? We only had 3 hits against Silvedania on Matchday 3. Fortunately, we took advantage when we could. A solo home run by Kausu Biri to make it 1-0 in the second, and then a leadoff single in the 7th by Boto Jassey saw him come home from first on a double to right field by Moses Mobika.

If we want to compete with the favorites- the Breton Valleys, the Nova Anglicanas, the South Newlandias of the world, then our bats need to wake up. This game against Nova Anglicana will be a great test. We've got our own #4 pitcher out there. Will our bats wake up? Or will we looking for our pitchers to bail us out of bad offense?

Either way, it should be a fun upcoming couple of games.

Lions' bats come alive late to down Les Espadons


Up next for the Nova Anglicana Lions, who had started 1-1 in the International Baseball Slam, was the team from Somiens-et-Haveras. This is a socialist nation in the North Pacific Ocean that is primarily Francophone in origin. Their team nickname is Les Espadons, "The Swordfish." Unfortunately for them, they failed to draw much blood, losing 10-1 to the Lions. It was an encouraging win from the minor-leaguers that make up the Lions, but the outcome was still reasonably in doubt until the late innings.

The Lions' offense hadn't been super-strong in the early innings, scoring just three runs total across the first five innings of each of their games, but this time, they started off all right. In the very first inning, Rob Patten blasted a two-out homer into the seats in right, making it 2-0 before Saint-Marie had the chance to even bat. In the fourth, veteran Alain Gosselin singled home Roscoe Meacham, the third of three consecutive singles in the inning. Unfortunately, the Lions couldn't get any more runs that inning, but they led 3-0, already equaling their early-inning run total of the past two games. But it was the late innings when the bats really came alive. Gosselin led off the top of the seventh with a single, then shortstop Philippe Marchand grounded one through the hole between first and second to make it two on with no outs. Pinch-hitter Jason Snodgrass came on for starter Bradford Curry, and lined a sharp single that landed just in front of the center fielder. This loaded the bases with no outs.

At that point, on came a reliever to face Rhett Bellamy. Bellamy executed a perfect squeeze play that took Les Espadons by surprise. Gosselin scored, everyone moved up a base, and Bellamy even got a hit out of it. Michael "Mac" McCray lofted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Marchand and making it 5-1 Lions. In came a left-handed reliever to take down McAllister and Patten. After Nick McAllister struck out, Scott Elston pinch-hit for Patten to get the favorable matchup, and whomped a double deep into the left-center gap. Snodgrass scored easily and Bellamy turned on the jets to score from first, making it 7-1. In the eighth, Jean-Jacques Duplante pinch-hit and smacked a two-run bomb to left, making it 9-1 Lions. Meacham hit an RBI single in the ninth to cap the scoring at 10-1.

That offense came after Curry, the starter, had left the game. So for most of the game, he had a two or three-run lead at best. He worked his sinker to his advantage, getting Soméhave after Soméhave to pound the ball into the dirt. Over six innings, the only blemishes he allowed were a second inning walk, a fourth inning single, and three more hits in the sixth that scored a run. Overall, his line was 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K in a very efficient 74 pitches. Although some would have liked to have seen more strikeouts, he definitely was pitching well. Matt Townsend walked none in his seventh inning appearance, Emil Blum struck out two with his splitter in the eighth, and Greg Harper pitched the mostly meaningless ninth, allowing just one baserunner. An excellent team pitching performance concluded an excellent overall team performance.

Up next for the Lions are the Banijan Joint Service Academy All-Stars, a team composed of the best baseballing military cadets Banija has to offer. This will be a big test for both teams, as the BJSA All-Stars are 3-0, while the Lions are 2-1. Banija's cadets will bring excellent pitching to the contest, having allowed just five runs so far. The highest number of baserunners their starters have allowed so far has been six, while pitching between six and eight innings each time so far. Mariam Nzola will look to continue their streak, while the Lions, who have scored 18 runs so far, will hope to have a better offensive result than they did against Alma-Ata. Sun City Flames:

The Flames, coached by Drawkian Al Krauss, spectacularly managed to win their division in their very first season. Fair enough, they did so with a .500 record, but they still did it. Grady Reuters, their Drawkian reliver, and Laure Valle, their Chromtik catcher, both proved to be extremely good players; and together with a roster full of young South Newlandian talent including players like slugger Perez, Moss and Avila, this team was at the very least mediocre. That’s all it took to win the Southwest this season, and the Flames did do exactly that.
Big win:
MD60: Kinjestad Peacocks 0-7 Sun City Flames
Late in the season, the Flames were looking good, but they needed some wins to separate themselves from the rest. A 7-0 pounding amid a four-game series in Kinjestad was exactly what they needed.
Big game:
MD72: Sun City Flames 2-1 Rüsselsheim Blue Sox
On the very last day of the season, the Flames were hosting the Blue Sox. Both teams held a 35-36 record so far, and the winner would win the division, going straight to the playoffs. The Flames, with home field advantage, and the Blue Sox, hoping to get back into the playoffs, were locked in a 1-1 tie until the bottom of the ninth, when elite slugger Nicolas Perez cracked one out of the field to give the Flames the walk-off victory, with a postseason ticket on top.
Big loss:
MD21: Elephant Valley United 10-0 Sun City Flames
The Flames lost big quite a few times, but this one in Elephant Valley was the worst. Getting shutout, adding to a now six-game losing streak, sent them down to 9-12 and third place in the division.


Rüsselsheim Blue Sox:

The Blue Sox were the team expected to win the division. They had made noise in the off-season by acquiring Kohnheadian star Lucca Hahn for the outfield, they got a strong Ko-orenite third baseman in Taboada, likely the best third baseman in the league, and they still had Larry Cain as their pitching ace. Despite these three pieces, Domenick Millher wasn’t able to produce a winning record, mostly because the team lacked any notable players around these three. The Blue Sox looked like they were the team to beat throughout the first half of the season, and they fought back after some trouble with five wins in a row to go into the last stretch on even footing with the Flames.
Big win:
MD3: Rüsselsheim Blue Sox 13-0 Kinjestad Peacocks
After losing at United in the opening series, the Blue Sox absolutely destroyed the Peacocks in their first home game in a while. It wasn’t even close, and Iglesias could only shake his head – his Peacocks were completely outgunned.
Big game:
MD71: Sun City Flames 3-7 Rüsselsheim Blue Sox
After splitting a close series with the Homers right before this, the Blue Sox had a chance to win the division in Sun City. They managed to force an all-or-nothing game by defeating the Flames in this game, where they proved that they wanted to win here. They, ultimately, fell short.
Big loss:
MD53: Ratzupalfu Rhinos 12-0 Rüsselsheim Blue Sox
The Blue Sox often found themselves in big losses as well, and it is no surprise that their run differential ended up way below 0. This game in Ratzupalfu is only an example.


Kinjestad Peacocks:

Hiring Erick Iglesias from Super-Llamaland had been a massive move for a team that finished dead last the season prior, and the man attracted some foreign talent as well. While few South Newlandian stars were here, he managed to construct a roster with Llamanean reliever Fang, and created arguably the most dangerous outfield in the league with Ko-orenite Bennett, Yumizuka from Diarcesia and a young, but extremely talented Kieran Fletcher from Tikariot. That was enough to get this team to compete, but not enough for a winning record. What the Peacocks lacked most was a dependable, high level starting pitcher.
Big win:
MD35: Kinjestad Peacocks 11-1 Southwestern Baselanders
The Peacocks, of course, have their big rivalry against the Baselanders. They did absolutely crush them in this game.
Big game:
MD68: St. Riecarn Saints 1-8 Kinjestad Peacocks
Late in the season, the Peacocks suddenly found themselves back in the race. With 5 to go, they defeated the Saints. At this point, they were a single game away from the Flames, for the division title. Losing would not be an option now.
Big loss:
MD72: Southwestern Baselanders 7-6 Kinjestad Peacocks
The Peacocks lost the next to to the Rhinos, a fierce rival over in the other division for the wildcard spot, and they headed to play the already eliminated Baselanders, their big rival. Two wins were necessary to have a chance at pulling even, to keep their playoff hopes alive. After winning the first game, they had a close final with the Baselanders. Going into the ninth, the Baselanders and the Peacocks were tied at 4. The Peacocks, batting in the top of the ninth, went ahead with a fantastic Fletcher home run. Leading 6-4, they just had to hold for a last gasp chance. The Baselanders pulled off a game-tying double, followed by a game-losing error that allowed another run.


You might be screaming now; so, there are like 7 teams basically tied; who went to the playoffs? What where the chances ahead of the last game, the last series?? The truth is, it was super weird; we’re going to look at the final table in a second, but we have one more team to look at.

Southwestern Baselanders:

The Baselanders, after a poor season, had another bad season. That’s all the Baselanders ever do. Aside from Michaelson, their ace, they have zero interesting players. Hardly anyone cares about them, and they were 22-34 after 56 games. They never had a chance at the postseason, even in one of the worst divisions of all time.
Big win:
MD32: Sophie City Girls 2-13 Southwestern Baselanders
Big wins were really rare.
Big game:
MD72: Southwestern Baselanders 7-6 Kinjestad Peacocks
We talked about this earlier; they did win over their fierce rival 4 times throughout the season. Every single of their 4 encounters in the season resulted in the series split.
Big loss:
MD44: Southwestern Baselanders 8-16 Ratzupalfu Rhinos
The Baselanders were really bad, and lost a lot. They scored the fewest runs and had the worst run differential. They were bad.

Yes, the Rhinos made it in. And so did the Saints, somehow. The Blue Sox narrowly missed out, on run differential; and the Peacocks ended up short too. It was the weirdest season potentially ever.

IBS XIII HALFWAY REPORT: It's been a rough time

Welcome to the IBS XIII Halfway report. Today we're still thinking about the latest game, a painful 7-1 loss against Quebec U22s.

Daskel U18 Junior Daskies 5 vs 3 Sarzonia U-21 Junior Stars
The Jr Daskies started with a nice but tight win against Sarzonia U-21 team. The Junior Stars had our national team cornered, when they tied it in the third, and then scored a highly possible winning run in the eighth inning. The hero of the game was Komatsubara Kenji, who doubled for an oportunity to take the win at home. At the end, Seri made the team score three, and Nire managed to keep the ninth secure. 5-3 Daskies.

Daskel U18 Junior Daskies 4 vs 7 Bohemia Buccaneers
The second home start was the beginning of the wave, so to speak. The Jr. Daskies battled against Bohemia Buccaneers, newcomers on the IBS. The match was never in Daskel's favour, trailing behind all the game. Tomohiro Kadowaki didn't have luck against Buc's batters, and the bullpen could not contain the attack for the offense's sake. "You know, I can't even recall who scored in which situations. We had a mess of a game, It was confusing as hell, and we could not come back from that. That's bad. We need to improve If we want to defend our position" Told Shigeki Tomohiro, captain of the U18 team.

Quebec U22s 7 vs 1 Daskel U18 Junior Daskies
Last night was one to remember, or to forget, depending on what's your coping mechanism.

Daskel only had a lone run before being hammered by the Quebecian team. Kawauchi Mitsuo held his first international game well, but the bullpen was just... a disaster. We do not have another word for it. The team aknowledged their problem in the last press conference, and they have started a proccess to take direct action on it.

"I'm deeply sorry for last game's performance of our bullpen, and there will be inmediate changes to what we have done before" Kasai Tomoki told the press "For an instance, we will give Nire the oportunity to be our main reliever for the next game, as we develop a new strategy. We believe Koichiro have everything we need to success, as he has demonstrated in his last high school regionals and to the second round of the mighty high school baseball nationals. We'll keep Setoyama Shintarō as our opener for the next match, and we trust both pitchers to give each other the confidence to win this needed game."

Clark's bat, Egozhevy send Bangers to IBS octofinals
Breton Valley jumps on scoreboard early, Clark's three-run shot seals deal

Owen Clark's four-RBI day included a three-run home run in the sixth inning, and the Breton Valley Bangers battered Junior Stars starter Cal Zane for ten hits in under five innings en route to an 8-2 victory at the International Baseball Slam.

Bedin Egozhevy recorded his second start of the tournament, earning his first win with one run allowed and seven strikeouts in seven innings, as well as contributing an RBI double and a run for his own cause. The Bangers improved to 3-1, and with two games left to play in the group stage, have ensured that they will advance to the Round of 16.

"We think we're starting to come together here," Clark said. "We're getting used to the weather, we're seeing the ball well, we're more confident with runners in scoring position. The Stars are a good team so today was a perfect checkpoint."

The Bangers' offensive explosion came with a four-run sixth innings, but they also tallied runs in five of the first six innings, gradually building a lead before emphatically pulling away. They inherited a 1-0 deficit to start their at-bats after an RBI single from first baseman Xavier Felton scored the Stars leadoff, second baseman Kyle Monahan, yet they kept their composure as Valery Robiquet and Teuvo Kujala each singled off Zane to begin. Robiquet made it to third on Kujala's hit, and Kujala stole second unchallenged. Zane chose to pitch at the batters in front of him, striking out Clark and forcing Jack Russo into a pop-up, but Pavel Malek's single scored Robiquet to tie the game.

Malek stole second in similar fashion, and Zane this time chose to send Ryan Rudock, the hitter of the Game 1 walk-off home run, to first. The game remained tied as Lauri Vatanen struck out to end the inning.

Following the shaky first inning, Egozhevy settled down to allow just three baserunners in the next five innings - two hits and a Rudock error. The Breton Valley offense got him the win as Russo got a hold of a tame sinker and sent it over the right field wall of the Kabaka's Military College diamond. Egozhevy built his own lead in the fourth with an RBI double to score Vatanen, who had hit his own double. The Bangers' offense threatened to take off, but were stymied by a bizarre series of circumstances. Ilkka Salonen struck out for the first out, and after Robiquet singled, he was caught stealing for what should have been the second out, only for the umpires to dismiss the teams by calling the third out. (OOC: I wrote and scanned a scorecard, and realised after scanning that the fourth inning only showed two outs. I thought it would be easier - and funnier - to do this rather than revise and rescan the card.)

"It's not something you see every day," said Kujala, who was batting when Robiquet was caught out. "But the umpires keep track of everything and do a lot of games. Mistakes and human error are going to happen. If we let that affect the outcome of the game, we've done something wrong."

It didn't affect the outcome, as Kujala picked up where he left off with a leadoff triple in the fifth inning. Clark doubled him home to chase Zane, whose sliders had long lost their bite, from the game. Joyce Khan, a right-handed reliever with a similar pitch mix to Zane, came in to walk Russo and successfully forced Malek into a double play to wrap up the inning.

But it was the sixth frame that finished the scoring, Khan's day, and the Stars' realistic chances of coming back. Egozhevy walked; Salonen doubled to left; Robiquet flied out to center to score Egozhevy. Kujala singled before Clark picked up a slider over the left field wall to score himself, Salonen, and Kujala.

"I think the pitch repertoire is where the age and experience really makes a difference," Clark posed. "They're a young team not throwing with a lot of heat, but not developed enough to throw breaking balls with what it needs. Guys like Bedin and Thomas (Blunt) have had a few more years to mature, develop a big league mix.

"They're talented enough to get there. But for today, it was a bad matchup for them and a good matchup for us."

With the damage done and the score now 8-1, Tom Crowley entered the game and appeared to have the speed and power to match the Bangers' bats. Crowley struck out three batters in 2.1 innings, and finished the seventh with relative ease before retiring the side in the eighth.

To some surprise, Egozhevy exited the game after seven innings. The seventh inning was slightly contentious, as the 23-year-old left-hander gave up hits to Deanne Parker and Monahan, and walked the pitcher Crowley. After the game, manager Joran Perrot explained, "He was a game-time decision today. We knew he'd be on short rest, and we were looking for signs that he might be tiring. He could have finished, but we need him later. Better to get our bullpen fresh and ready to go."

Evan Dickey slung a scoreless eighth with one hit and two strikeouts. Closer Sean Magary entered the ninth in a non-save situation; although he allowed a two-out home run to Chad Wingate, pinch-hitting for Crowley, Magary struck out Monahan to prevent further incident and seal another Breton Valley victory.

"The pacing of this game allowed us to be more patient," said Kujala, who broke open a slow start to the tournament with 3-for-5 at the plate and two runs. "We were feeling confident at the plate in the first few innings, and that helped us get in that zone of, one run at a time. If you get one run each inning, that's good offense and you're going to be tough to beat. So that became our goal today and I think the mindset really helped us.

Breton Valley will hope to carry that mindset with them against the Daskel U18 Daskies, the defending champions of the IBS. The Daskies have not greatly impressed in the tournament so far, with a 2-2 record, but Breton Valley won't be looking past them.

"We think we'll match up in a similar way, having the experience and maturity in general," Kujala said. "But they clearly have championship mettle, they know this competition, and they play very good tactical offense. It's a tough group with a lot of good teams. If they can find themselves, we'll still have our work cut out for us."

And lying one step ahead, before the playoffs begin, is a rivalry match outside the group which will count for the standings. The Bangers have agreed to a game with the Kohnhead U-21 Pandas, who earned a decisive shutout of Hebitaka 6-0 at the Shango-Fogoa Coast Guard Academy in Herzegovina City. The Pandas are 4-0 and have conceded just six runs, a tournament best.

"They have a great pitching staff and defense, and their bats are coming around too. They're in a similar spot as us," Kujala said. "We didn't know how good they'd be when we agreed to the game. We didn't know how good we'd be either. It'll be a fantastic test for both teams."

For Game 5, left-hander Lucas Beaudoin will start for the Bangers, with right-hander middle reliever Jakub Novotny expected to pick up some of the workload. Submarine lefty Takashima Daijirō is scheduled to take the mound for the Daskies.

Lions roar late, claw past host All-Stars


Yesterday, in the 13th International Baseball Slam, the team of enterprising minor leaguers that represented Nova Anglicana faced their toughest challenge yet: the combined Banijan Service Academy All-Stars. Not only were the All-Stars trained in both baseball and in battle, they were defending their home turf (literally, for the Air Force cadets playing at the Air Force stadium), and as if that weren't enough of a challenge, they were 3-0 and had only allowed five runs in three games. No matter that most of the cadets were 3-4 years younger than the youngest Lion, these were going to be tough nuts to crack.

The Lions came out swinging against Army cadet Miriam Nzola, the left-hander the All-Stars sent to the mound to protect their unbeaten record. Showing that they weren't going to be intimidated by the All-Stars' stellar pitching record so far, the Lions scored two runs in the first inning when right fielder Roscoe Meacham lined a ball into the gap between Boto Jassey in center and Musa Mobika in left. It fell for a double, and the Lions led 2-0. However, the military wunderkinden struck back in the second against Jean Desmarais. Desmarais is a tall guy with a good curveball who needs to work on his mental control on the mound. He allowed five baserunners and three runs in the second and third innings combined, but it could have been a lot worse. He got two key strikeouts to end each inning with runners on base. Despite the fact that the Lions trailed 3-2 after three innings, they were hanging in there. Desmarais retired the side in order in the fifth before giving way to pinch-hitter Jason Snodgrass. Snodgrass came up after Philippe Marchand had reached on a walk. He proceeded to pull the ball just past the outstretched glove of Kausu Biri at third, sending it shooting down the line for a double. Nzola got Rhett Bellamy to pop up, but Michael "Mac" McCray drew another walk to load the bases. Nick McAllister flied out deep to right-center, scoring Marchand and tying the game at three, while Snodgrass moved up to third. With two down, Nzola faced off against the burly lefty-killer Scott Elston, who she had retired twice before. This time, her cutter didn't quite get in on the hands enough, and Elston whacked it off the wall in left-center, where it ricocheted past Jassey. This allowed McCray to score from first, making the score 5-3. A reliever whiffed Meacham, but the damage had been done.

On came Erik McGuire to protect the lead. McGuire is a big right-hander who's much better against righties than lefties. So facing lefty Sulayman Ouattara and switch-hitter batting left Bassirou Mansaray was a big test for him. Unfortunately, he allowed both to reach base, and in fact departed with the bases loaded and one out after having allowed Fabba Jobateh to get a hit off of him, scoring a run. Emil Blum came in to face the pinch-hitter and although he got the strikeout, he allowed an RBI single to Jamang Marong, scoring a run and tying the game at 5. But in the bottom of the inning, Rob Patten singled home Jack Corcoran, making it 6-5, Lions. It was still a close game as Mitch Ballard retired the side in the seventh, but the bottom of the inning would prove to be decisive.

McCray led off against Thoriso Oupanyana, who features a three-pitch mix of 2-seam fastball, changeup, and slider. McCray drew his second walk of the game and reached for the third time, putting Oupanyana on the spot. What followed was a carousel: single, RBI double, 2-RBI double, pitching change, walk, pop-up, single, two-RBI double from pinch-hitter Duplante, pitching change. When Rhett Bellamy came to the plate, it was 11-5 Lions and the All-Stars were on their third pitcher of the inning. Bellamy and McCray could not drive home any more runs, but the lead was more than sufficient. The All-Stars threatened against Alex Long and Rick Sims, but couldn't score anything, giving the Lions a big win.

The Lions now move to 3-1 and on the cusp of the end of the group stage. Their second-to-last group stage game will come against the Santo Domingo Toros, who lost 5-3 to Silvedania's U21 team to fall to 1-3. A win would almost certainly guarantee the Lions a qualifying spot while a loss would sink them back into the pack. Fortunately, even if they were to lose, they would still have a game left in the rivalry round against the Abanhfleft Revolution All-Stars. These All-Stars are a collection of former Abanhfleft national team players who are now past their prime. However, they will still challenge the Lions with their skill and veteran savvy. If the Lions win that game, it counts in the group stage standings and could earn them a better seed for the regional round coming up after the group stage. Let's hope the Lions can bring down the Toros and show that youth is king against the Revolution All-Stars!

Mariano spat on the beach, running a hand through his wet hair. The landing had been a challenge, that was for sure. Not only had some of the smaller transport boats been unfit for duty or even damaged, but there had been leakages. The boats could not always fit capacity, and some of the men had to swim alongside the boats to allow the equipment to stay dry. Not that all of it did. The clumsy landing and the rush of the waves meant that some of their equipment got soaked, particularly the radios. Just like Aragonés thought happened to those at Blue Beach, Red Beach had lost their comms to the water. They couldn't get the message out.

Furthermore, the frogmen had already wandered into conflict as the rest of the force was still en route to shore. Just off from the beach, at the nearest road, the frogmen had been discovered by one a militia vehicle that was patrolling the area. A short firefight ensued, and Mariano and the others could hear the pops of machine guns from a distance as they neared the beach themselves.

"Those guys are well-fucking trained, they'll be fine," asserted Ruiz, trying to put on a show of confidence. However, Mariano could hear the nerves that were seeping into his voice. His crewmate sounded shaky. José Ruiz was, like Mariano, one of the younger members of the cohort. He was apparently eighteen (but then so was Mariano), though realistically Augusto believed him to be sixteen or seventeen. According to Ruiz himself, his father had been a police officer that was murdered by the Reds. He wanted revenge. The story made enough sense not to question any further.

By the time Mariano and the others were on the beach, the firefight was over. The frogmen had won, as expected. But it was not a victory to cheer about. They had shown their hand, the militias were alerted. The Reds already knew that they were here.

Mariano's hands were covered with sand, and he made an effort to try and wipe as much of the shit off and onto his trousers. Everything was wet, sandy, or both. He pointed his gun to the ground and fired to make sure it still worked, causing Ruiz to practically jump out of his skin.

Their brigade converged for a sitrep. The Reds already knew that they were in the country, so they needed to prepare for a fight with the militia. They couldn't communicate with Blue Beach, but had reason to believe that their mission was going better. There would also be air support. Digging in was vital, and they needed to find better ground. "There's a small militia post nearby, token resistance. Small number of us can overwhelm the position whilst the rest bring all our equipment." Salazar said, taking charge of the situation and cooking up a plan. "I'll take point, who wants to come with?"

Mariano immediately raised his hand, as did Aragonés. Ruiz did not, putting his arm across the other man and in a low voice muttered to Mariano. "Ey, Augusto, what are you doing? That shit is dangerous, man. Why don't we both bring the ammo?"

"I want to kill some of those Red scum, José. I thought we both did. Lost your nerve?" Mariano shrugged free of him and made sure his intention to join was clear. "I'm with, Salazar. These fuckers aren't going to destroy our way of life. I'd rather die now than live under the Red menace. And if I die, I want to take with me as many of them as possible. Let's go!"

Young baseball players Neptune Taru have made a historic success for baseball in Srednjaci, but also one of the greatest results of team sports in Srednjaci in general.

The young guys of Neptune Taru were fantastic, beating the Northwest Ballina Redhawks 11: 2!

They opened the game brilliantly and already on the first substitution and the first throw they knocked out the opponent, then they won all the bases in the run!
They hit incredibly accurately and the opponent was knocked down, the first section ended 6: 0 for Neptune Taru, there was no going back to the match.

It is amazing how much this news resonated in DR Srednjaca. The front pages were bombastic and all the baseball headlines sold out quickly.

“It’s time to get serious”
Hey, all of you listening at home and abroad. I’m Leon Kunayev, here on my way back to Alma-Ata with a couple of guests Coach Ludovico invited to the last games, Alma-Ata Clerical’s Karus Mehmedov and Han Seung-Jo. Shortly after the organization of the tournament, the players and coaching staff agreed that only one coach would travel with the team; the bench and bases would be managed by players. However, a mediocre 2-2 start, with very few runs scored, has spurred the management of the baseball team to invite these two coaches to the rest of the games, in hopes of inciting a more powerful offensive approach.
[editor’s note, for those outside the AACI’s world of sports: M. Mehmedov (KM) is the Holy Warriors’ 3rd base and pitching coach in the regular season, and M. Seung-Jo (HS), the former Greater Taggartian superstar, is now the batting coach for the Holy Warriors’ organization]
So, M. Mehmedov, M. Seung-Jo, how are you feeling about your Warriors’ performance in this International Baseball Slam?
HS: It’s a good start. We played four close games, and three of those were played very well. We have played the most innings of any team in this tournament, because of Santo Domingo and Banija.
KM: Agreed. We have not lost nor won a game by more than a run; this team’s got potential to hang with the best of the rest. Kyle San Bracero pitched a phenomenal 9 innings when the Toros visited, and Junior [Ladomir Aikalon II] did what needed to be done against Les Espadons de Sainte-Marie. But the pitching and defense, no matter how phenomenal 9 earned runs in 41 innings, for a combined ERA under 2, doesn’t excuse the absence of offense. Opposing teams have held us to the same amount of runs.
LK: So although the statistics show very good performances, you think that the Warriors have potential for much more?
KM: That’ll be our job. We’ve seen the boys put up seven, eight runs against teams in the Intercollegiate League; we know that the offensive power is there. Nikolai hit 18 home runs in last year’s 40 games, and Talyev stole 32 bases.
HS: Both of which led the [Church Inter-Collegiate] League.
KM: Like you said: potential for more. But now, it’s time to get serious. We are back to the top of the rotation tonight, for the game against Silvedania’s Sycamores. Asharikov pitched exactly like we needed him against Banija, and I have absolute confidence that he can replicate that.
HS: I’ll keep the team playing like we started; I just hope to add more consistency to our approaches at the plate. We don’t know anything about the Sycamores’ pitching, but we’ve proven we have the talent necessary to play a good game against any team.
LK: Thank you for your time, gentlemen. I wish you luck against the trees tonight.
HS: Sure.
KM: Thank you. We hope to see you in Alma-Ata tonight.
