Banija's #1 English language newsletter for military veterans
Op-Ed: The Banijan Joint Service Academy All-Stars will be a fun watch. But can they bring home a country?
Many of us joyfully remember our days at the academy, if we indeed were at the academy. Who doesn't remember college fondly? We all know our own college experience was different. Early wake-ups. No parties. But foundational.
We're all used to rivalries between our four schools. And that's OK! Imagine if Northern and Loyola-Istria tried to put a joint team together in, well, anything. It'd fall apart. You know, the gridiron team, to add atmosphere, almost had a joint Northern and Loyola-Istria marching band. Almost. There was so much in-fighting between the schools, and the marching band directors allegedly nearly came to blows. The proposal never went public- so they quietly nixed the idea.
So rival schools working together like this in sports.... Is rare in Banija, to say the least. Of course, we lived in a sports crazed universe- and Banija is certainly no exception. We obsess over our college sports though. So there were big concerns coming in that this team would fall towards in-fighting.
And look! We've actually got a fun team to watch for once. It's only been one game, but the Joint Service Academies already look like a blast that gets along. Ateh Dika pitched 7 strong innings, only allowing two runs. We've got all sorts of fun people after that. Forcolo Ngele coming out of the pen, six up and six down. Thoriso Oupanyana pitched the bottom of the 10th. Allowed a leadoff double to put the winning run in scoring position, but then got the next three batters to strike out. I liked how the manager wasn't afraid to keep him in, either. Pitch through the bad situation.
And then, of course, Musa Mobika hitting a home run in the top of the 11th. And Ouma Obong'o had the 1-2-3 save. All in all, great game. Great watch! I'm planning on going to Okakameb myself to watch a couple of group stage games. Especially against the Lions- Nova Anglicana are certainly the favorites, aren't they?
It'll be a fun tournament, and a fun group for sure. Tomorrow we've got a legitimate true freshman pitching. Rameses Ngolu. Tall and skinny. A southpaw. Just 18 years old. And heck, they're being managed by a military veteran themselves- Augusto Mariano. Clap for him! It'll be a truly fun clash between a pair of fun teams. Banija forever though, right?
