International Basketball Championship 31
Delaclava Phoenixes

General Information

About Delaclava: The United Republic of Delaclava is a massive democratic republic located in southeast Atlantian Oceania, and consisting of a large mainland with numerous nearby island provinces and overseas territories in the more remote corner of the region. Delaclava is particularly notable for education and scientific development, advancement of culture and music, active lifestyles which see citizens frequently outdoors in public parks and natural forest and mountain areas, and a well-established public transportation system which connects all the diverse major cities and regions of the mainland. Isolation policies have been lifted completely only in the past several years, so modern Delaclava has a larger emphasis on national and regional cultures rather than international and global influences. Citizens have a large degree of personal freedom and expression, but within the framework of traditional social values which reinforce the structures of family and community.

About the program: The Delaclav national team was traditionally a consistent yet unimpressive presence in the early editions of the IBC, recording top-eight finishes at IBC5, IBC7, and IBC9. The Phoenixes also hosted the 7th edition and are proud to bring the tournament back to Delaclava once again. This tournament is the Phoenixes' third IBC since their international return, and have compiled an 11-9 record in their revival, thus achieving their current world ranking of 20th. Therefore, the team itself and the basketball governing body sees IBC31 as an opportunity for the Phoenixes to vault into the next echelon of international basketball, with increasing experience and the backing of the home faithful.

About the team: Delaclav teams emphasize pushing the pace at all times - the fast break, ball movement on the perimeter and through the top of the paint, finding shots early in the clock, and a full-court press on defense. Players are expected to give their maximum effort at all times - if they need a break, they will get subbed out for a few minutes until they are ready to push again. Despite the inclination towards speed and urgency, the tactics are patient enough that a fast break will not start without having properly secured the ball.

When the three-point shooters are finding their stroke, this results in high-scoring affairs. Often, it instead means the Phoenixes have trouble with their accuracy from the field and fall behind early. Their strength therefore lies in continuing to push the pace and wear down the opposition so that they can find layups and easier shots in the transition as the game goes on. At its worst, the team will have a tendency to lose composure against superior opposition, such that entire games simply get away from them.

Delaclav teams are typically undersized, and have traditionally focused more on perimeter movement on offense, and a zone defense to mitigate mismatches at center and power forward. Even the smallest players on the team are physical defenders and enthusiastic rebounders, although this still presents a challenge against true big men. The Phoenixes have upgraded in recent years with the emergence of big men such as Đorđe Zubić and Omar Harris (more information below), so height disadvantages are becoming less pronounced, and the strategy has become more inclined to funneling the ball through Zubić, either at the top of the paint to redistribute, or down low for a quick finish.

PG:Emilio Courtois (Age 25, 181cm tall)
PG:Javier Cruz (Age 21, 184 cm tall)

Squad comments:
Not many chances to the squad as older players left for younger ones to take their spots. A change in the coaching staff sees Constantino Mutu as head coach of the team, he will be hoping to bring some stability and seriousness in an otherwise pretty immature, young squad. As previously stated, Juven basketball players are shorter than average, as such they're pretty speedy on the court and will almost always rely on easy 2-pointers and quite possibly clutch 3-pointers instead of going in for the dunk. The defensive focus of the team is to remain in position and make it as difficult as possible to enter the 6-meter half-circle. Physically speaking, Juven players are pretty strong for their height however and they are also a pretty moody bunch, so expect a lot of fouls and arguments in the court. As for substitutions, those are bound to happen often due to the pacey nature of most players, so they recharge and be at the top of their pace at any given moment.

Recent history:
Everything before the international basketball championships' 30th edition is completely wiped off the memories of countless Juven fanatics and while they would also like the same for the most recent edition, this is not likely. A good showing during the first half of the group stages saw the team leading the group in 1st place, however a second round choke to last place Sannyamathland and subsequent elimination has left a sour taste in everyone's mouths.

Coaching staff:
Main coach:Constantino Mutu
Assistant coach:Apolinar Bautista
Assistant coach:Manuel Guidi
Main doctor:Guillem Sauvageot
Assistant doctor:Isidro Antonescu

THE ASSOCIAZIONE BASKETBALLISTA DI OSCIORU PRESENTS

THE NATIONAL BASKETBALL TEAM OF OSCIORU

Information:
Country code: OSC
Demonym: Osce(singular), Osci(plural)
Nickname: I Tauri(The bulls)
Capital: Poma
Population: 46,071,280
Rank: UR

Main 5:
C:Cirillo Castilla(Age 26, 203cm tall)
PF:Albino Carlevaro(Age 22, 200cm tall)
SF:Jordan Charles(Age 29, 199 cm tall)

Substitutes:

SG:Román Aloisi(Age 21, 194cm tall)
PG:Eliodoro Agua(Age 17, 184cm tall)
PG:Gratien Gil(Age 16, 183cm tall)

Squad comments:
Much like their northern -and totally not brotherly- neighbours in Juvencus, Osci basketball is of a similar style utilising shorter players, with a focus on pace, scoring easy 2-pointers or 3-pointers with extreme accuracy and avoiding dunking the ball unless required to. The only catch up is that the Osci school of thought tends to choose slightly taller, bulkier players for their backline but the focus on good positioning remains the same. The whole squad was created to antagonize the Juven squad and they will do anything in their hands to prevent them from succeeding while also giving Oscioru a name for itself in the international community instead of just being Juvencus' little brother state.

Recent history:
No history in international competitions, but basketball is a pretty popular sport in Oscioru, however with many players leaving for neighboring Juvencus' basketball league as it provides higher standards and pay. A few unofficial friendlies played between both sides indicates that they are very close in regards to skill and very similar when it comes to their tactics, so this should play a part in how they react to playing against international competition

Coaching staff:
Main coach:Ange Brambilla
Assistant coach:Yvan Abel
Assistant coach:Gabriele Toloni
Main doctor:Lino Lefebvre
Assistant doctor:Jean-Marie Caro

FRIENDLY

Postby Srednjaci » Wed Feb 03, 2021 10:30 am

WORLD ARENA SPORT - CHANEL 3

The friendly match was played by the national teams Raspotochje and Srednjaci, and the guests took a convincing victory.

For the midfielders, this is also the last preparatory match before the IBC.
The hosts opened well with a trick and took the lead 3: 0, but as the game progressed, the Srednjaci showed their talent and quality. The home team's great defense prevented any playful action and Raspotochje didn't score a basket 8 minutes into the game. The selector of Srednjak also gave the opportunity to the nineteen-year-olds.

Raspotochje 59–82 Srednjaci

Davor Paradinović 22 pts , 12 asis., 9 reb., 3 fouls
Nikola Tomljanović 20 pts , 10 asis., 16 reb., 3 fouls
Danijel Matković 15 pts , 11 asis., 4 reb., 2 fouls
Stjepan Marković 8 pts , 9 asis., 6 reb., 4 fouls
Ivan Kotromanović 8 pts , 4 asis., 4 reb., 4 fouls
Josip Mikić 4 pts , 2 asis., 2 reb., 2 fouls
Ante Marinović 3 pts., 0 asis., 2 reb., 1 fouls
Vedran Jurković 2 pts., 1 asis., 1 reb., 1 fouls
Kornelije Turković 0 pts., 3 asis., 0 reb., 1 fouls
Darko Vučemilović 0 pts., 1 asis., 4 reb., 2 fouls

DROP IT DOWN!: Double The Groups, Double The Fun!

Governing Body: Basketball Federation of TJUN-ia (BFT/BF-TJUN-ia)
Home Colours: Sky Blue with Orange Trim
Away Colours: Orange with White Trim
Third Colours: Black with Orange Trim

Another two years have flown by in an instant, and that can mean only one thing. The IBC, the BFT and the Hoops-Jags are back! After reaching the quarter-finals in our second edition of this tournament, Bao Zhou and his team are back and looking to do it all again in a new format that combines both the home-and-away aspect of IBC29 with the sole-nation hosting of IBC30. How? Well, hosts Delaclava took a page out of the World Cup's book for this edition. So, we begin with home-and-away qualifying before the top 2 in all 10 groups travel to the hosts for the Finals Group stage, where only 8 sides can advance to the Quarterfinals - a point we reached in the last IBC. So, the Unity Centre is back for the first stage and with the squad getting older for this Top 10 team, the pressure is truly on to get to where we want to be in this sport.

It's back! The Unity Centre hosted all of TJUN-ia's home games during IBC29, but the format for IBC30 meant we didn't return to Riverside last time out. Now, after 4 years away, it's back and ready to host the top-seeded, Top 10 Hoops-Jags. While the Pot 1 home side can expect more of the same from IBC29 in terms of crowd support, pressure has been mounting by some in the NAU to build a new arena in The Gardens of New Washington in order to help "return the sport to its natural homeland". While the Unity Centre is an icon of TJUN-ian basketball, especially after the upset over Valanora back then, the days of this arena being the sole hosts of the national team may be numbered...

MARIGRED BASKETBALL ROSTER

Nation Name:Marigred
Association: Marigred National Basket Council (MANBAC)
Nickname: Grey Wolf
Style:-3
Home Colour: Grey with black as secondary.
Away Colourr: white with grey as secondary.

Head Coach: Charlotte Bailey (44)
Assistant: Caitlin John (39)
Physio: Karla Patel (23)
Media:
-Jayda Kaufman(short:jk) (35)
-Lydia Gibson(short:ly) (21)

INFO:
The first time stepping into the IBC stage, arguably the realistic target is to earn as many points as possible. MANBAC, Marigred's basketball management body, was established a few years ago. However, due to the worsening financial problems, this body can be said to be almost buried. Thanks to someone's kind service, MANBAC was revived. However, the game of reviving the sport is not easy. If you want to talk about talent search, there is no problem. There are still many talents out there that can be polished. But the main constraints today still involve finances and facilities. MANBAC tried to get land ownership to build a national basketball court but the bid failed. The body is trying to apply to the Marigred sports unit, but there is still no answer. For now, the best way for MANBAC is to try to see how far the sport can grow. As a result of this initiative, MANBAC made recommendations to schools around Marigred to revive the sport of basketball and as a result 23 schools expressed agreement. As a result, the first High School Basketball tournament was successfully held. After that, the association once again tried to apply to the Marigred sports unit to include Basketball as one of the professional sports in the country. And as a result this time, MANBAC officially became one of the umbrella bodies under the Marigred sports unit. But the early game of MANBAC is still vague. Despite being under the umbrella of sports units, these sports are still categorized as new sports, and as a result of the country's budget being not very stable, each budget needs to be evaluated before being approved. On the initiative of the sports unit, they suggested MANBAC first focus on sports development at the high school level. The sports unit approved a project to convert the old badminton court to a basketball court and give full control to MANBAC. In addition, to raise the ranking of this sport to a higher chart, the sports unit recommends MANBAC submit entries to international tournaments. Despite being in a hurry, in order to ensure the continuity of this sport, MANBAC used the high school platform to elect a national representative. Although still young and inexperienced, and perhaps just a laughing stock on the world stage, this is the best exposure for this young squad. Most of the squads selected are young players. However, among them, there is one player to the attention. She is Rosie Wilamson. He is not a professional player, but she has participated in amateur league competitions in several other countries. Now he's playing with an amateur club in a country in the Malay Archipelago. Hopefully a little bit he can liven up this team game.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL BASKETBALL TEAM

This will be Abanhfleft's seventeenth time participating in the International Basketball Championships. How many times have we been saying that it's the end of an era? The new batch of stars that was supposed to continue the legacy of Hayden Dorola and Leo Baxter failed to deliver on their task, and now the last remnant of that generation of players will hang up his shoes at the end of this IBC. Can Jazz Higgs lead the Rebolusyonaryos to glory for one last time in his last IBC, or will it all end in tears and disappointment once again?

HOME STADIUM (The Fleftic Arena, Riuwiee)
Image
Presenting the Fleftic Arena, the largest indoor arena by seating capacity in the Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft

Situated in the north of Abanhfleft's capital city of Riuwiee is the National Sports Park, a 140-hectare "special national designated area" in which a majority of Riuwiee's sporting facilities are located. Standing out among the stadia and gymnasia is the massive and imposing structure and flat roof of the Fleftic Arena, officially the largest indoor stadium in the whole of Abanhfleft with its official stated capacity of 100,786 seated spectators for indoor sports. The structure broke ground on September 26, 2009 as part of the capital city's reconstruction efforts following the aftermath of the Holy Catholic Revolution of 2008 which left nearly the entirety of Riuwiee devastated, and construction was completed over three years later in 2012. The Fleftic Arena is the official home arena of the Abanhfleft national basketball team and has played host to dozens of matches during the International Basketball Championships. Aside from that, the Riuwiee Presidents of the Fleftic Basketball Association occasionally uses the Fleftic Arena as its home stadium when it plays marquee match-ups against well-known teams from the league such as the Malabon Black Ops or the Markovsky Red Army, taking advantage of the arena's huge capacity when the capacity of their usual home stadium, the Sterling Arena, is deemed to be not enough for games of such popularity. Aside from that, the Fleftic Arena has also played host to at least four FBA All-Star Weekends since its inauguration and opening in 2012.

As for the stadium's location, Riuwiee is the capital city of Abanhfleft and is home to over 20 million people. The Fleftic people are very crazy and passionate about basketball, and even though their home side the Riuwiee Presidents has been disappointing in the FBA as of late, the fans still come out in droves to support and cheer for their team.

A few years ago, basketball was just sport for fun of and there were no official matches or competitive tournaments. Now, basketball is starting to be played competitively at the high school level. Many high school students started joining the school basketball team. And now, the sport is becoming popular at the middle school level. Aimee Lawson (15y.o) has just returned from a convenience store to buy snacks. He usually goes out to buy snacks in sufficient quantities for a week. The convenience store is also not far from his house, so it is not surprising that he will always go there. Aimee decided to take a stroll for a while even though it was actually more of a walk without direction. Aimee is not the type who likes to wander around here and there, and among her friends are just her classmates. With the exception of the club members of the association or the school leadership, even the students in the next class can say that Aimee does not know them. Simple expression, if she is cheerful as if she were a princess, if she is shy there is no difference with a tortoise hiding her head. So when leaving the house, Aimee will try her best to avoid meeting passers-by. He was sometimes greeted by a small shopkeeper or a neighbor, only a pale smile could be seen on his face. Just a few minutes he wandered, the sky began to cloudy. Aimee turned back to the original road and hurried back.

During dinner, there was a bit of a conversation between Aimee and her mother.

Mother: Aimee, this year is your final year in midle school and next year you will go to high school. So you have decided what you plan to do this year? Aimee: Umm, take the exam as usual je mom.
Mother: That mama knows, just, do you want to go to extra classes outside or not?
Aimee: Mmm. That is why I entered my last year at midle school and this year only the midle school level basketball tournament was introduced. So I want to play in that tournament.
Mother: I see. Ok then. But if your results are always declining, want it or not, you need to drop, ok?
Aimee: Fine. Dont worry, i will not fail, i promise.

Her second elder sister, Aleena (17y.o) come and eat with them. Aleena: What are you talking about?

Aimee: Nothing. Sis, what do you do this year?
Aleena: I and my friends will focus on going to the national this year. Last year we lost in the final. Hope this year is lucky for Rose Art High.
Aimee: Oh okay. Sis, is there a basketball team?
Aleena: Yes. If you think you want to join the team it is not too difficult. After all you can enter with a simple result. Aimee: You just said i not good in study huh.
Aleena: Ahaha, just joking. You are really cute when you are angry.
Aimee: Just be silent, dumb sister.
Mother: Just stop argue and eat. Good grief.

Tomorrow the first day of bew semester in Salhill Middle school. Aimee targeted the best for the basketball club in their debut and tried to grab the slot to the final.

The Inkopolis Times

SPORTS

GUESS WHO'S BACK?

The IBC is back again - 60 teams enter, and Squidroidia will be one of them once more

It feels like an eternity when we last covered the International Basketball Championship - We invented the phrase "The Banijan Buzzsaw", a term used for the Banija national team as they beat Newmanistan to lift the trophy every "baller" and "hoop shooter" wants to have on their cabinet - An IBC title. That was back in Edition 30, when the Inkopolis Times had a special IBC group set to cover the tournament hosted in Græntfjall. As fate would have it, the hosts of the previous edition will have to contend with that same Banijan Buzzsaw that won on their soil. But as the Lions from the Glorious Southwest tip off their title defense against Mytanija away from the confines of AO that has, for the most part, defined the IBC for the past few editions, attention turns once more to the Squidroidian national team.

The journey to Delaclava will not be like the journey to Græntfjall - There is no "Participate and you're in", instead, with 12 more teams than last edition, those top 2 spots are for making the final tournament - The 20 best in basketball traveling to Delaclava to eventually crown a champion. The 10 games that made up what the White Winter Queens called a "group stage" will be called, in the eyes of the Delaclavans, a "qualifying round", one that starts off in Londinium, where the Inklings will take on the same Nova Anglicana team that delivered Newmanistan's only other loss last tournament. In more simpler terms, the Squidroidian national team will have to go home and away for the first round of the Championships.

The "Londinium Lions" are the only carryover from the previous IBC group Squidroidia were apart of to make their group - The Ginger Tigers have taken the tournament off for unspecified reasons according to the IBO, but everybody else from the Octarine Group stayed. In the same group as the Banijan Buzzsaw, Group H for "Heck we got Banija", are HUElavia and Maccian, both of whom are expected to not make the final tournament due to the existence of Græntfjall and Banija, while Newmanistan were placed in Group G, which probably stands for "Goodness me, Newmanistan?". Their group opponents include Xanneria, Trolleborg and Rwekazaland - If you don't know about Rwekazaland, go ask the Banijans.

Getting back on track, however, Squidroidia's qualifying group is not easy in the slightest - The top seed in the group, the Top 10 (Plus 1) TJUN-ian Hoops-Jags, the Quarter-Finalists, coached by the great Bao Zhou, look like making the final tournament in Delaclava with ease, but will also serve a dual-purpose for Squidroidia, as their encounter in Matchday 2 will open up a fresh Mako Arena to the world of international hoops, with all eyes on the Inklings to get at least some decent results. Apart from Nova Anglicana, Zeta Reka and Hügeltaldom are the only other ranked team in the group, as the 4 teams with actual basketball experience will have newcomers in Srednjaci and Smosh Games, also known as that one nation that had 0 points in World Cup qualifying, hoping to at least shock one of the ranked opponents before an expected exit from the IBC is to happen. The Jags and Lions look like making the top 2, but with how Squidroidia impressed last tournament, they could make waves and maybe beat NA to a Finals spot.

Other new teams to introduce you to are:

  • The Equestrian States... Of Poland, who are placed in Group A alongside the Finals host and Valanora,
  • United Vietussia, in the "Group of Death for Everyone Not Named Equestria or Kriegiersien" with Equestria and Kriegiersien,
  • Crilland and East Lemyone in the "Not Quite Group of Death" with Chrom, Quebbles and Vangaziland,
  • An Oscioru I Tauri side with at least some potential alongside the Net Corps in the "Actual Group of Death",
  • Nateros Sill in Group F (In The Chat), with Sarzonia as the main attraction,
  • Mapletish making a return to basketball in Group G,
  • Familiar football side Commonwealth of Baker Park in Group H alongside the Banijan Buzzsaw,
  • Marigred (Not to be confused with Margaret) in Group I, along side the United States... Of the Adirondacks,
  • And Wizcity, who have their friends Sannyamathland in Group J.

Say hi to all of them, as we are probably not going to play them and half of them will go away next tournament. Such is the Circle of Hoops...

Commonwealth of Baker Park National Basketball Team

Baker Park Basketball, the governing body for the sport, enters into their first IBC tournament with optimism that it can build on the foundation laid by the AO Basketball Championship title won in Tropicorp. This will be the first ever mixed sex basketball squad to represent the Commonwealth, with players representing the established CBL men's pro league and the more recently established WBL, which has provided outstanding collegiate talent on the women's side opportunities to play post-graduation.

Audrey Snider, National Championship winning coach at the University of Baker Park will return as national team head coach, and will work closely with Neal Oakley, 2 time CBL Championship winner and 4 time Coach of the Year; they will be assisted by Endborough College women's coach Caren Hunter, Steve Ames of the CBL's Hamilton Pirates and Chris Meriweather, men's coach at Belle Haven State.

Guard Neveah Jackson was the Most Outstanding Player at AOBC V, and she is joined by six other women from that squad who will look to provide complimentary skills and experience for the seven men who have previous international experience from the last Olympics. CBL First Team All Stars Keith Rosario, Colin Walsh and Joe Foster, plus former CBL Championship MVP David Ennis and Keon Dexter, the league's leading scorer from a season ago, will provide the professional polish that the women are just beginning to gain.

High scoring, fast paced basketball has been a hallmark of the sport in this country for over 100 years, with emphasis on passing and spot shooting.

Hardwood Phoenixes head to Equestria for regional championship

The Delaclava national basketball team is once again in action, with their next competitive cycle in swing. For the first time in decades, it will all culminate here in Delaclava, with the thirty best teams in the world descending on Cyanea after the Qualifying Round; twenty of them will be eligible to win basketball's greatest prize. But before then, sixteen of Atlantian Oceania's best squads, Delaclava included, will take a slight detour to Equestria for the sixth Atlantian Oceania Basketball Championship. Delaclava arrives as the defending runners-up of the regional competition. The field is quite tightly packed, but optimism is high that the Phoenixes may just find a way to navigate the draw on their way to the podium once again.

Delaclava basketball is quite accustomed to competing in Equestria by now, despite their relatively brief modern history. Delaclava's return to the International Basketball Championship was organised by the Equestrian basketball association, with Delaclava drawn into their qualifying group. Delaclava's respectable 5-5 record unfortunately included a 103-60 thrashing in the Equestria-hosted fixture, and a more competitive but still crushing defeat 76-69 in Vana Beach. Months later, Delaclava returned to Equestria for the Southwest Region of the fifth and most recent Atlantian Oceania Basketball Championship; while there, Delaclava routed Ko-oren 105-82 and handily beat Chromatika 77-61, advancing to the quarterfinals in Tropicorp despite a tight 80-77 loss to rivals Banija. Once in Tropicoast, the Phoenixes would defeat Northwest Kalactin 76-64 and avenge the loss to Banija with an 86-82 semifinal victory, before suffering a shocking upset blowout to Baker Park in the championship, 97-80.

The team is headed up by BC Athens stars, league MVP Đorđe Zubić, and fellow All-Star Pekko Ranta, with coach Kent Kerner in assistance to St. James' Jim Levins, and Zachary Bates expected to provide support off the bench. Zubić has shown by far the most improvement out of any of his teammates through their international action, and the typically small-ball Delaclavs have come to rely on his physical paint presence, while Zubić has also slimmed down and sped up enough to be a dynamic playmaker and take effective part in the fast break and transition game. Ranta breaks the mold of the typical tough and gritty, yet undersized Delaclav guard - much like his wing-mate, Simon Rybakov of the Manchester Lions; instead, Ranta brings athletic and technical finesse, and is arguably the Delaclav squad's sharpest shooter from anywhere on the court. Captain Rick Jones of the Corcorran Flash is the only player from IBC30, besides Zubić, who returns to this squad, while 7-foot-1 Omar Harris, in his third year with the Salem Wizards directly out of high school, represents a real departure from tradition in the typical roster makeup of the Phoenixes. Instead, this appears to be a well-rounded team who will retain their typical breakneck pace without facing the same matchup challenges as usual.

The 20th-ranked Phoenixes are drawn into Group A with host Equestria (#7), Crystal Empire (#51), and Ko-oren (unranked). While the Phoenixes have a rough history against the Equestrian program, they should take confidence from increased experience as well as their recent AOBC final run. In order to pass through the group, Delaclava can at least repeat their performance over Ko-oren and will be favored to defeat the Crystal Empire team. If the Phoenixes survive the group stage in Canterlot, they would take on the Group B winner, likely the 3rd-ranked Quebecois squad; if Delaclava finds a way to at last best Equestria, they would potentially see Chromatika again, or perhaps an upstart such as Busoga Islands or Savigliane. Group C is headlined by Sarzonia and Northwest Kalactin, while Group D is led by top-ranked Banija and Qasden, with Baker Park looking to somehow back up what many would consider a fluke title run. If they can somehow last again, the Phoenixes would surely appreciate a chance for revenge, or would also look forward to match up with the Banijans, against whom the Phoenixes have found a surprising amount of success.

While more acclaimed squads will be favored to lift the AOBC trophy at the end, Delaclava's players feel strongly that they will have their say in the proceedings. They have previously faced the majority of the top teams within the past few years, and have the knowledge of the opposition to pair with their own ever-improving chemistry and skill. Every team is just six quick games away from the title, and if the Phoenixes start strongly enough, they may just find themselves on the right side of the final standings.

Charybdis Hall unveiled as first confirmed venue of IBC31

The city of Athens has over the past few days celebrated the grand unveiling of the brand-new Charybdis Hall, a 45,000-seat basketball-only stadium in downtown Athens, overlooking the water to the east. It was constructed specifically for use in the 31st International Basketball Championship to be hosted by Delaclava, but it is confirmed that the venue will also become the new home of DBA champions BC Athens as well as numerous collegiate and high-school postseason games and championships.

On hand at the public grand opening and guided tours were Delaclava Olympic Committee President of Basketball Jennifer Fisher, Delaclava Basketball Association commissioner Bryan Bailey, Athens mayor Daniil Miskoglou, and BC Athens stars Đorđe Zubić and Carsten Yount. More than 50,000 fans were allowed inside to fill up the seats and standing-room-only mezzanines, and truly experienced the game atmosphere just from the on-court opening ceremony.

The next day, spectators were treated to an informal scrimmage between DBA champions BC Athens and cross-town rivals Rhodes Rockets, demonstrating the splendor of the mahogany floors; the benches and scorer's tables are situated on a level just a few steps up from the court, allowing players and referees to run down onto the court to make an entrance. The court-side seats are positioned several more steps up, allowing the front-row fans a unique perspective of the action below them.

Finally, Charybdis Hall was selected to host a Cyanea Tipoff Classic, affording Delaclava and Sarzonia's national teams a last few repetitions with a competitive edge to the proceedings before starting official play in the IBC.

Delaclava 61–66 Sarzonia

Disappointingly for the home faithful, the Stars took the tight victory in the second Classic. Nevertheless, it was a highly competitive and entertaining contest, and the fans could at least appreciate the competitive spirit and skill of both teams. In addition, the first Cyanea Tipoff Classic, in which the Stars emerged victorious 70-66 in Woodstock, was played behind closed doors as Sarzonia fought to contain an outbreak of SARS 2 novel coronavirus; now, with the nation overcoming the challenge, fans of both teams expressed gratitude that they could be in attendance this time.

Postby Sarzonia » Fri Feb 05, 2021 9:28 am

Mike West remained in the tunnel leading to the court a few seconds longer than usual. He heard a sound that was now more familiar with the restoration of full-throated crowd support to The Palestra in Woodstock, but had been stilled by the worst of the SARS 2 novel Coronavirus pandemic that claimed the lives of 28,000 Sarzonians.

Crowd noise. Sure, there were somewhat noticeable smatterings of boos emanating from the red and gold-clad Delaclav faithful, but there were also cheers, both from the navy-clad Sarzonians and from other Delaclavs. West paused a moment to soak in the sound.

His Sarzonian national basketball team had just come off an appearance in the Atlantian Oceana Basketball Championships, an event Sarzonian basketball officials decided to enter the Stars in as preparation, in much the same fashion as they had for the Gold Coast basketball tournament hosted by Northwest Kalactin, a tournament Sarzonia ran through undefeated to capture a title. This match, against a Delaclav team that was now 20th ranked in the basketball-playing multiverse, would serve as the final tune up for sixth ranked Sarzonia before the real games began.

West would get this extra time because he wasn't in the starting five as usual. He would be held back as the sixth man, as manager Thomas Manningham wanted to give Jayne Cruz a shot to start at point guard and starting point guard Ben Thomas a shot at playing the two. He'd give more chances to play to the depth players in this match, but if the match were close by the second half, the starters would be in there playing to win.

It was the nature of the rivalry between Sarzonia and Delaclava. A friendly rivalry, to be sure. The players all knew each other. They were all friends off the court. Cruz, in fact, frequently visited her aunt and uncle in Rextaria, where they made their home. Kent Bradley scouted homes in Corcorran. Both Corcorrans, actually. The Sarzonian city, which was named after the Delaclav city and the original city. Neil Caruso was familiar enough with the nightlife in Delaclav home court locales that he was able to recommend specific nightspots to individual Sarzonian hoopsters based on their individual preferences.

But, as friendly as the rivals were off the court, the rivalry was equally fierce on it. Neither team led by more than four points at any point during the first three quarters, and only the Starsled by as many as eight midway through the fourth quarter before the Phoenixes made a couple of three-pointers in a row. Sarzonia were clinging to a two-point lead with 2.9 seconds remaining before West caught the inbound pass from forward Harold Blevins and fired a three-pointer. The referee raised her hand to signal a foul against West's off guard counterpart Pekko Ranta, his fifth, but then she quickly motioned downward with her right arm to count the basket when it rattled home. The three ball gave Sarzonia a five-point lead, and if West converted the four-point play, the Stars would have a six-point advantage.

West walked to the line with his Stars now leading by five with a chance to pad it with one more point. West by this point was five-for-five from the charity stripe to go along with his team-high 13 points. He decided to intentionally miss the free throw, which he did. When the final horn sounded, Sarzonia escaped with a 66-61 victory that would give them some momentum as they hoped to soon return to Delaclava to start the single round robin second group stage.

"I felt making that free throw would have rubbed salt in the wound," West said. "We don't want to do that to our friends."

The Pony Principality of Equestria
National Basketball Team

Introduction
The state of Equestrian basketball has been something of an enigma in recent times. With a fairly respectable national team, arguably the best domestic league in the multiverse, and indisputably its best current club in the Seaddle Subsonics, one might expect that basketball would be center stage in Equestrian sportsdom, but instead it could charitably be considered a secondary sport, though it would more accurately be described as completely off the radar of most Equestrian sports fans. It has its share of dedicated followers, to be sure, particularly among the Banijan-Equestrian immigrant community, but in general, few Equestrians could be said to care about the sport in the same way they do about hoofball, hockey, gridiron, or hoof-racing. Still, despite its tertiary status, Equestrian basketball remains ascendant.

At the 30th International Basketball Championships, without home court advantage, the Weavers were unable to match their remarkable semifinal run from the previous edition, finishing second in their group before being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs (again) by Drawkland (again). However, despite the somewhat disappointing end to the tournament, the Equestrians did accomplish something they'd never managed before: finishing a competition with an all-time winning record. Yes, the Weavers had temporarily broken the .500 ceiling a few times previously, and have had several individual tournaments with winning records, but they'd never actually concluded one with more wins than losses overall. A small victory, perhaps, but one which the Weavers can now point to as evidence that the team has finally had more success than not in its history.

Players
As usual, the Equestrian team for the 31st International Basketball Championships will draw exclusively from the Royal Equestrian Basketball League (REBL), possibly the best basketball league in the multiverse, and inarguably the most successful semi-professional organization currently in all sports. Akio Yoshida, Burning Sun, Arum Lily, and Olaf Craig will seek to transfer their IUBC-winning performances with the Subsonics to the IBC, as will Event Horizon and Katrina Ford (albeit a season removed from their IUBC title with the Lancers). Rosine Bright remains the Weavers' talisman, despite her bitterly disappointing failure to lead the Indigo to victory in the REBL Championship Series and their subsequent IUBC group stage exit. One player to watch off the bench will be Meadowbrook, who is hoping that a strong showing in the IBC will translate into a move for her to one of the REBL's premier sides from Maritime Manehattan.

NEWMANISTAN ROCKETS

“Three Time IBC Champions”

Basketball in Newmanistan: Basketball has a solid following in Newmanistan, though the fans are drawn to the college level a little moreso then the pros. It’s popularity is regional in nature, with the Loudon area in northeast Newmanistan being the most fanatical towards the sport. This is a competition that Newmanistan had success in back in the day, winning both IBC 4 and 5. That was a long time ago, but the Empire has been on the right track since its return, making the playoffs in their return in IBC 23, then taking a run at Saint Kanye in IBC 24. The progression continued until the remarkable IBC 29 perfect campaign, where they went undefeated in the group stage en route to the title.

Basketball is played differently in Newmanistan. There is an additional line behind the three-point line that serves as a four-point line. Shots behind the half-court line are worth six points. Players are taught how to shoot from longer then expected distances at a young age, so they will have a higher level of success at these shots in comparison to those who have not routinely practiced them. Be aware of this in the IBC, because while the four-point line will not exist in the tournament, our players are comfortable putting up shots from distances that you’re team might not be used to having to tightly defend. They are unlikely to put up shots from beyond the half court line, though, in this tournament. The big key to remember is that within the halfcourt, be expecting a shot from anywhere.

Coach: Kevin Gibson (52), Southport Tigers
– James Parsons announced before the IBC 29 campaign that the tournament would be his last coaching venue at any level. The team made it a memorable one by leading the legendary national coach to that amazing perfect season and championship. Gibson took over as the new coach with very large shoes to fill for IBC 30, and managed to lead the team to the championship game. He'll be back again.

Uniforms: Envision the uniforms of the University of North Carolina as the best comparison.

Starting Five:

Image SF: Lucas Bennerman, 29 (6'8", Centralia Firebirds) (#33)
Image PF: Brian Danielson, 35 (6'9", Tundra Falls Mariners) (#30)
Image C: Byron Storm, 36 (7'2", Olympia Gladiators) (#55)
Image SG: Warren Peyser, 28 (5'11", Southport Tigers) (#23)
Image PG: Travis Warden, 31 (6'2", Loudon Leopards) (#22)

– There are no changes here. Why would we? Peyser is an all around juggernaut, exciting people all across the Empire. He will put it up from anywhere, and leads Newmanistan in four-point shooting percentage, so if you are playing us, I highly suggest guarding him tightly as soon as we cross half court. Storm is obviously the big rebounder, but don’t snooze on Bennerman doing the same. He is very productive for the team. Because the team will use their bench often, there is not much concern about the ages of Danielson and Storm.

Bench:
Image F: Shaquan Bateman, 28 (6'8", Tundra Falls Mariners) (#44)
Image F: Marquis Scott, 29 (6'6", Loudon Leopards) (#35)
Image C: Donavan Freeney, 27 (7'2", Pocono City Capitals) (#55)
Image G: Dwayne Murray, 34 (6'4", Putnam Lake Eagles) (#4)
Image G: Kevin McCarrick, 26 (6'2", Jessicaville Millionaires) (#5)
Image Utility: Duvie Fayette, 27 (6'1", Jessicaville Millionaires) (#25)

– All of these players are stars at home as well, so they should not be considered “bench players” like you may consider such players on a real-world NBA team. They are simply more reinforcements of players who are all able to play at a very high level. Therefore, coach Parsons will not hesitate on using them, and giving them a fair amount of minutes as well. These players will get quite a bit of playing time, too. Bateman and Murray are a very exciting players, there is simply no room for them in the starting lineup. When he’s used, there is no let down.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my Scorers: Yes
Choose Scoring Events: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to my Players: Yes, but only say they are hurt. I will determine the severity.
Godmod Injuries to my Players: No
Godmod Other Events: No

Also: While you are free to say any of my players “foul out”, keep in mind that the bench does get considerable playing time, too, so players in early foul trouble will likely be on the bench for longer stretches. This doesn’t mean they won’t foul out, but if you go that route in RP, you might want to add in caveats that the coach did try to manage his foul trouble at times.

It's My Take Feburary 5th 2037 Episode

"I'm Tom Cebella and It's My Take, Johnny did you hear a recent study showed that 33% of Xannerian shave been caught wearing no pants while on conference calls, John are you one of them? " - Tom

"Im John Cornish and I guess, I usually don't wear pants in the office anyways, be thankful the camera doesn't pan down" - John

*MUSIC CUE*

"On today's episode, the Dukes get Lomanbaum, The latest updates from the Cup of Harmony rumors AND Coach Rhule talks more about insect based sports, but before all that, we're gonna talk international basketball. Johnny, The Xannerian Maroons have entered the International Basketball competition for the first time since six years ago and the first time since they had to withdraw after the sudden death of Xannerian Basketball commissioner died of a Heart attack four years ago. Johnny what are your thoughts?" - Tom

"Man look at who the Maroons are playing! You got Mapletish, a nation with a great background in sport, You got Newmanistan who unlike soccer is good at basketball, Kytonia, who I know nothing about, and Trolleborg, who are again a sporting prowess. Plus look at the Xannerian Roster, you got Power Forward, Jermicheal Hodgdon from the Bearden Sky, at Small Forward it's Lorenzon Faraday of the Dominica City Senators. Then look at the Center it's another Bearden Player, Tomas Bryar! The two guards are Shooting Guard Hakeem Wasaad of the Hazeltown Speed and Point Guard Tyson McHicks of the Dominica City Senators. What do you think of that roster Tom? Top heavy with Dominica and Bearden players?" - John

Yeah thats a competitive lineup alright John, but again can I point out some of the depth on this team? Look at the backup guards You got some names there,Dalequinn Sutton of Agnew, Lloyd McLendon of the Rome Beach Fire And Andrew Gossett of the Pearlham Shamrockers. Can you see those two coming off the bench and putting on a show? Also look at the back up center, it's Bill McKee the long time vet at Pearlham. He could easily come of the bench and be a contributor, and you know who the back up forwards are? Drake Consellios and Andy Argentine of the Hawthorne Stars and Velstin Point WIldcats. Thats a Roster that competes! What do you think John?" - Tom

I think It's gonna be competitive in our group but I can fully see the Maroons doing well, maybe top-3 in the group" - John

On to our next topic, Derrick Lomanbaum has agreed to pitch for the Denalia Dukes........

HUElavia Returns to IBC looking for Growth!

HUElavia appears in another International Basketball Championship wanting to grow the sport of Basketball in HUElavia. Compared to other sports such as the juggernaut Football, along with Futsal and (surprisingly) Ice Hockey, Basketball does not have such a strong following in the country. While major cities have some solid teams playing in an amateur league, the HUElavian Basketball Association is looking to grow the sport in the country.

For this edition, the same players from IBC 30 will be playing, even if they're 4 years older from the last tournament. For this edition, there are 10 groups with 6 teams each, playing in a Round-Robin format. The top two teams in each group will advance to the Final Tournament in Delaclava, where HUElavia hopes to play decently to squeeze into the Group Stage.

HUElavia (31) is in Group H, playing against the following teams: Mytanija (UR), Græntfjall (17), Baker Park (UR), Maccian (41), and Banija (1). HUElavia will play their home matches at Palacio de los Reyes (23,000) in Curumba. Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos will be projected to finish in 3rd Place in Group H. Regardless, the team is looking to rack up as much points as possible and maybe take some from Græntfjall and Banija. Fans will be attending the matches at the arena, in what people expect to be sold out for each home game.

Here's to hoping for some good growth from the team and the sport in HUElavia!

FORCA HUELAVIA! VAMOS HUELAVIA! GO HUELAVIA!

What we learned about the Lions at AOBC VI in Equestria

Image
Banijan players start to celebrate as the final buzzer sounds in their 68-61 AOBC Final victory over Sarzonia

CANTERLOT, EQUESTRIA- For a long time, Atlantian Oceania national team basketball had been far too removed from the IBC trophy. Dynasties from other places came in and out- St. Kanye, Drawkland, Vangaziland, all dominating the IBC 20s. But with our own title at IBC 30, to bring the sport's most prestigious trophy back to Atlantian Oceania after twelve long editions away, AO"s turn seems to be coming in this sport. The tide is already turning- 3 of the four semifinalists at IBC 30 were from AO- Royal Kingdom of Quebec, Sarzonia, and ourselves.

And so it was no surprise when the call came out for the sixth editions of the AOBCs. And we showed the region, and the multiverse, why we were considered favorites not only in that tournament, but also co-favorites in the big upcoming one as well- IBC 31. We learned a lot of things about this team heading into IBC 31, and a lot of challengers would be able to glean a lot about Banija after this tournament. This country considers regional championships to be very prestigious tournaments. No youth teams or experimental rosters or anything at this tournament- we sent the exact team we're sending to IBC 31, and we pulled IBC-like minutes rotation, with IBC-like intensity. There was a desire and hunger to win this tournament among the players and coaches, and that is exactly what we did in Equestria.

What did we learn about Banija, exactly? We are now champions of Atlantian Oceania in our own right- a proud moment. But now, we are going to try and defend our world championship. But what can this tournament tell us about our efforts to do that?

#1 The 1-3-1 zone defense is as nasty as ever

Now, of course, we had a small sample size. We only played 6 games here, and three in the knockouts. But the Banijan defense was aggressive and overwhelming. This team has the type of length, quickness, and versatility to play an effective 1-3-1 zone defense. Very few teams can truly break it down, as we saw at IBC 30. You've either got to be a team like Kriegiersien, who's quickness on the dribble allowed them to penetrate, or like Newmanistan, who's insane range can allow them to shoot over the top from almost anywhere inside half-court.

We allowed just under 53 points per game during the group stages, far and away the best numbers. Now, of course, the numbers went up in the group stages- against the elite competition of the knockout stages, you simply are not going to have that kind of success. The two lowest point totals of the knockout stages came against the Banijan defense as well. There was Pluvia & The Saxean Isles only managing 59 against Banija, and then there was Sarzonia only scoring 61 in the Final, which was a close, physical, high-intensity matchup between two rivals. Our defenders like to jump into passing lanes and can create havoc and turnovers, and most of this team is capable of quickly turning and going to the other end to punish the opposition on the fastbreak.

#2 The fastbreak is the name of the game for this Banijan team

This team has always been known for its ability to run, but we have gone above and beyond for that ability in this tournament. We averaged about 19 fastbreak points game for the first five games of the tournament- showcasing an ability to make long passes, to fly up the court, and then get to the rim quickly. While the half court offense is good, the ability to get into transition is valued across the board. Even Labanzi Nabongo, who is the middle person in the "3" in the 1-3-1, can get the ball and push down the floor, even at 33 years old. Now, of course, the fast break game will get to someone at 33- even he seemed to see less minutes than normal. But his court vision and ability to find Banija's wings, or Akabueze, flying up the court remains invaluable.

#3 Banija is willing to lean on our starters when the going gets tough

Now, the first five games of this tournament were blowout victories for Banija. It was the final of the tournament, between two teams that are already rivals and are co-favorites heading into the IBCs, that would be the most fascinating for Banijan fans. Even after a tournament of big wins, Isaiah Lavaga had told reporters that the Banijans would be 'fighting for their lives' in Canterlot. "Sarzonia has an excellent basketball tradition." He said. "They've got talent, it's up and coming. You saw them at IBC 30 start to show their true potential. While they ran into the unstoppable force we call Newmanistan, they are a team that is on the rise and should be back in the Final soon. Tonight will be a good showcase of disciplined, defensive basketball."

And Lavaga has never been afraid to shorten his rotations when the biggest games come. In the first five games of the touranment, he ended up going 12 deep in every game. While the starters got a few more minutes in the quarters and semifinals, the only reason they didn't dominate the minutes was because the score got out of hand in both games. But in the Sarzonia game, the game was in the balance the whole time, with neither team holding more than a 5 point lead the entire second half, until Banija pulled away in the final 30 seconds. But here is the minutes distribution for the AOBC VI Final.

(Remember international basketball is 4 10 minute quarters, as opposed to Banijan domestic pro basketball which is 4 12 minute quarters)
Starters
PG #3 Ibezimako Akabueze. 33 minutes
SG #7 Ebrahima Faye. 31 minutes
SF #14 Ezekiel Bullo. 37 minutes
PF #4 Labanzi Nabongo. 31 minutes
C #10 Sadio Bartaba. 32 minutes
Bench
PG/SG #12 Janko Jawo. 8 minutes.
SG #5 Saihou Uster. 10 minutes.
PF/C #9 Antouman Ceesay. 19 minutes.

He shortened the rotation from 12 to 8, and each starter played over 30 minutes. Ezekiel Bullo led the way, with a stunning 37 minutes. Banija's star player was barely able to sit. With Nabongo and Bartaba both over 30, of course, they each got a decent amount of rest, but if they were a bit younger, we imagine the amount of bench minutes would have been even shorter. Now, of course, the Banijans were fortunate not to be in foul trouble, but still.

When it's close down the stretch, especially in big games, Lavaga is going to lean on his starters. That conditioning will be important. But look where Bullo sat. He sat for the final minute of the second quarter, and then for the final minute of the third quarter and the first minute of the fourth quarter. It can be a blessing, it can be a curse. You can certainly wear down Banija's players. And in a close game, if you get Banija's frontcourt in trouble early, you can put Lavaga in a real bind.

Fortunately for Lavaga, this team was not tired at the end, and they pulled away in the game's final few minutes. With 2:30 left, Banija led 59-58 against Sarzonia. Then, on three straight possesions, we essentially ended the game. A floater by Akabueze made it 61-58. Then a long two by Ebrahima Faye(they originally thought it was a three but Faye's foot was on the line) made it 63-58. And then, finally, a hook shot by Nabongo hit the back of the rim, but Bartaba tipped in the putback with about 33 seconds left.

65-58. And although Sarzonia was able to hit a contested three pointer to make it 65-61 with 20 seconds left, the game was already out of reach for the Stars. Akabueze hit a pair of free throws to make it 67-61, and then when Sarzonia came down the floor and missed their three, it would be Nabongo who would hit 1/2 from the line to make it 68-61. Sarzonia missed from three again, Banija rebounded, and we dribbled out a 68-61 victory.

The tournament showcased what the team's tendencies are, and what our strategies will be. It will also put a smile on the face of any Banijan who hopes to repeat at IBC 31, as this showcase in Equestria was certainly confidence inspiring for Banijan fans. Can momentum from the AOBCs carry Banija into a strong start at IBC 31?

MYTANIJA SQUAD FOR INTERNATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP 31

The Mytanar national basketball team has been named as the country returns to international competition at the 31st International Basketball Championship. Zenit Esca's head coach Mirko Lazetic has the honour of coaching the national side for the tournament and he has named a squad which is a real mixture of youth and experience, with 9 of the squad being aged 25 or younger and 5 players in their thirties at the start of the competition. Expectations are relatively low, especially after being placed in a group with world number one team Banija along with Rushmori rivals Græntfjall, but this tournament will represent an opportunity to blood the younger players and for some of the older heads to make their mark on the international stage. Most people's eyes will be on 22 year old Zelimir Ateljevic, the Košarka Esca prodigy averaged 31.5 points during the MKA Liga play-offs last season as he drove his team to their 9th MKA Liga championship as the 8th seed in the competition. Ateljevic is a determined scorer, but gradually added more and more to his game last season, particularly on the defensive end and nobody would be too surprised if most of Mytanija's scoring is through him when he's on the court. It is expected that Ateljevic will eventually outgrow the MKA Liga and will be looking for a move abroad in search of a greater level of competition.

In general Mytanar basketball is characterised by finesse and skilful play, with passing and sharing the ball being crucial to the way teams play. Even bigs will boast the ability to make difficult passes and make solid reads; court intelligence is one of the most highly regarded skills in the Mytanar game. Generally there are not specific players that dominate the points per game statistic. It is arguably more of a team-oriented style and players will also change position and can be tasked with taking on multiple roles in a game. Ateljevic is part of a slightly shifting culture in recent years to a more all-action athletic style, where players are expected to beat opponents in isolation plays rather than through the team's intelligent ball movement. It is expected that that is the way the Mytanar game is headed, although most domestic coaches are quite stubborn in trying to instil what they see as the 'Mytanar way'.

All of the team's home games will be played at the NacZat Arena located in the country's capital, Esca. The modern 12,500 capacity venue held fixtures during the 20th Handball World Cup held in Mytanija, including the final. The brand new arena hosts all of Mytanija's indoor sports national teams (i.e. basketball, handball, ice hockey, volleyball) and boasts all the amenities you could want from a national stadium, easy access, a huge variety of refreshment kiosks, great sight-lines and acoustics and it has the biggest capacity of any indoor arena in Mytanija. Home fixtures will be fiercely partisan, as many have come to expect of Mytanar sporting events. The now infamous ultras groups produce an intimidating atmosphere with their singing, chanting and bouncing as well as impressive tifo choreographies with flags, banners etc.

ALPHABET HOOP - THOUGHTS ON MYTANAR BASKETBALL
by Almedina Radovanovic

HOW TO SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE BANIJA?

They are the current IBC and AOBC champions and Mirko Lazetic and his team are going to have a real task on their hands in merely trying to slow the Lions down, never mind actually trying to defeat them. We welcome them to Esca on the opening day of the IBC and this will be a huge game for Mytanar basketball fans, with bona fide stars of the game like Labanzi Nabongo and Ibezimako Akabueze coming to face-off against our own top players. Akabueze in particular will be a familiar face for many Mytanars, he plays in the DBA just across the water in Donnacona for the Outremont Étoiles. It will be a challenge for some of the younger players just to avoid being star struck, older heads like Albin Jausovec and Zharko Kostojcinovski will be crucial in ensuring our squad’s focus remains on trying to compete with the Banijans.

Banija were imperious in winning the AOBC, the strongest regional basketball tournament in the multiverse (and arguably one which could stand-in for the latter stages of an IBC without anybody really noticing!), their 1-3-1 zone defence limiting their opponents to an average of 57.5 points per game throughout the tournament. Finding a way to work through that will be the biggest challenge Mytanija face and if the Hoops (an ironic nickname in basketball) can beat that 57.5 average that teams managed against the Banijans in the AOBC it will be a good sign that the team is at least on the right track. It is something that is easier said than done, however.

Zelimir Ateljevic will be crucial in any plans Mirko Lazetic has to break the 1-3-1 zone. He will most likely be the one tasked with making on-the-ball reads of the defence from his wing position, but even just getting open to receive the ball from Albin Jausovec may prove to be one of the most difficult parts of the game for the 22 year old Ateljevic, he hasn’t faced this quality of defender before. Getting the ball to him and letting him drive into the zone, hopefully forcing the Banijan defenders to make decisions, will surely form a part of the Mytanar approach to this game. It may be unsuccessful, but relying entirely on the usual Mytanar passing game and keeping the ball on the perimeter will make the game even more difficult for Mytanija – it would mean our three-point shooting would have to be near perfect in the face of a high percentage of shots being contested. Attacking the zone will be an important prong in the team’s offensive approach and is a part of the game Ateljevic is well-suited to.

There are then two opposing methods of trying to affect the shape of the zone defence to Mytanija’s advantage: either by stretching it and maintaining floor-spacing between our players even when moving positions or by trying to create overloads in specific areas of the court to try and give defenders multiple problems. If Ateljevic is driving into the zone to try and force it to collapse or at the very least flatten nearer to the Banijan base-line then the likes of Kostojcinovski and Jausovec will have to ensure they maintain their positions on the outside in preparation for receiving the kick-out pass. Defenders cannot guard the drive and the kick-out at the same time and Lazetic will surely be reiterating that idea to his players ad nauseam pre-game.

Alternatively we may end up seeing a lot of Fomin and Bychkov doubling up in the post, this will give the opposition two very large problems and given Fomin’s passing ability – often remarked as being closer to a point guard than a centre’s – may be a fruitful way of getting him a moment to actually pick a pass. The likes of Ateljevic and Kostojcinovski will be responsible for cutting in along the base-line when Fomin or Bychkov are in possession and again this will be a useful way of destabilising the general shape of the Banijan defence. It’s likely we’ll see overloads used regularly and when combined with screens – Bychkov being particularly skilled in this area – this could be a clever way to force players out of position within the zone defence.

All of that comes with the caveat that this is what many teams have tried against Banija in the past and many have done it without success, so there’s no expectation on the Hoops to manage it here either, but they are the sort of strategies which will give Mytanija the best possible chance of getting a good result. Naturally the best thing to do against any zone defence is to prevent the zone from getting set and that means that fast-breaks will be crucial, with that patented Mytanar passing ability needing to be on show to progress the ball quickly up the court. Look for the likes of Ateljevic and Kostojcinovski to be constantly looking to drive forwards once Mytanija are in possession to try and create scoring opportunities before the zone even has a chance to get set. Besir Sijercic will be especially important off the bench in trying to do this.

Defensively Mytanija has a few problems, Banija can score in multiple ways and Lazetic usually employs a passive defensive approach with his Zenit Esca team. This could give Banija a lot of opportunities to knock down pull-up and catch-and-shoot three-pointers. Lazetic has always preferred to protect the rim and force teams to take on the more low percentage shooting opportunities from distance, but you don’t become the IBC and AOBC champions without being able to score consistently from range. Banija could well relish coming up against Lazetic’s defensive set-up.

As we’re talking about defence it would be remiss of me to mention Fomin’s rebounding ability, he’s 213cm tall and he will be crucial in preventing Banija from grabbing offensive boards. Lazetic’s defensive approach makes defensive rebounding especially important and if Mytanija begin to lose out on boards then the game against Banija is only going to go one way. Fomin and Bychkov will be a menacing pairing for any opponent in the post, but it remains to be seen whether they will make the requisite step up in quality needed to succeed at international level. Fomin looks to be a real talent and could be another who follows Ateljevic abroad if (maybe when) that finally happens. The BK Magevskaya centre can do a bit of everything and is a big who has excellent game intelligence and deft ball skills for his size – his passing is well admired across the MKA Liga, if he can add regular scoring to his game he will be a real phenom.

Ateljevic is another who will be integral in our rebounding, his athleticism makes him a great rebounder for his size and he can often be seen out-jumping much larger opponents to come down with the ball on both ends of the court. Look for Lazetic to bring the 221cm behemoth Ruslan Mihajlovic if Mytanija are struggling with rebounding at either end. Mihajlovic’s introduction would sacrifice the speed and movement of say Stepan Bychkov, but it would bring a physical presence onto the court that any opponent would struggle to match. It may well be a last resort for Lazetic in this game due to the need to be able to attack Banija in various ways on the offensive end, something Mihajlovic is not as proficient in.

All in all, this represents as tough an opening game as Mytanija could have asked for. There’s a low likelihood of a positive result, but if Mytanija can make the game difficult for the Banijans that would be an achievement in itself. We have players who can cause issues for any team and if Lazetic is clever with his strategy then the Hoops could at least be a thorn in the side for our opponents in this game. There is a need for experienced heads like Jausovec, Kostojcinovski and Marusic and Mitrovski off the bench to keep the team focused on the task at hand and not allow morale to drop if they get off to a difficult start. It is very easy to get demoralised in a game against teams with the quality of Banija and end up on the receiving end of a sound beating. Trying to avoid that and put in a respectable performance which gains plaudits from the opposition’s team and media may not be something which whets the appetite of many sportspeople, but it would show that Mytanar basketball is on a reasonable trajectory and that our national team belongs at this level of competition once again.
