Synopsis
It has been 33 years since the Cold War ended and the USSR collapsed. It was believed that global peace would be achieved once the conflict was over. However, it never became so. As the Second Cold War is looming, countries across the world are nervous. With the Global War on Terrorism and the Great Recession, the global balance is hanging on a thread. It is a matter of time before even WW3 breaks out.

Intro
Welcome to "2024: Cold Interbellum", an AH/MT RP set in 2024. In this RP, you take control of a nation and manage it with skill. Diplomacy and war is present here, so be more wise and don't do mistakes. That's the last thing your nation want.

While I would like to see some real-life nations (save for communist Russia, democratic China and reunified/democratic Korea), other countries such as Czechoslovakia or a constitutionally monarchist Romania are allowed. I want this RP to be like "2021: A New Decade" and "2024: The Long Peace".

Lore

  • In 1969, a border war occurs between the USSR and the PRC. It took place at both the Uyghur border (between Xinjiang, Kazakhstan and Altai Republic) and the Manchurian border (between Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, Primorsky Krai, Khabarovsk Krai, Zabaykalsky Krai, Amur Oblast and Jewish Autonomous Oblast). It was more violent than IRL and led to Soviet victory. Following Soviet victory, the USSR annexed both Xinjiang (as Uyghur ASSR) and Heilongjiang (as Harbin Oblast), while China is weakened (and it would remain so until the 1990s). Since the end of the Cold War, Xinjiang and Heilongjiang are still under Russian rule (with Xinjiang being now known as the Republic of Uyghuristan), which means that territorial dispute still exists between the Russian People's Federation and the modern-day Republic of China.
  • Watergate occurs as it did IRL.
  • The Vietnam War ended as it did IRL.
  • In 1979, the Iranian Revolution occurs as it did IRL.
  • In 1980s, the anti-communist protests in Eastern Europe occurs as they did IRL.
  • The Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster occurs as it did IRL.
  • Following the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989, the CCP elects Nu Leiying, a low-ranking party official, to serve as the paramount leader of the PRC as a way to help stabilize the country under a less controversial leader. Unknown to the CCP and its high-ranking officials, Nu and his comrades carried out a silent purge within the party, mainly due to Nu having abandoned communism in favor of democratic socialism. After most of the CCP had been purged by 1990, Nu officially dissolves and bans the CCP, as well as replacing it with the more democratic "Shehuidang" (SHD), which soon began holding reunification talks with the Kuomintang (KMT). Following the talks, the PRC and the ROC officially reunified as the Republic of China, with the reunified state soon holding its first democratic election. The SHD emerges victorious in the election, but it was fair, so a two-party system is implemented in the ROC. Since then, executive power in the ROC has been electorally shifting between the centre-right KMT and the centre-left SHD. Taiwan is a SAR (Special Administrative Region) with its own parties. On the other hand, Tibet (playable) and Macau (non-playable) are independent states, while Hong Kong is still an overseas territory of the UK (albeit similar to its RL counterpart without the controversial National Security Law).
  • The Persian Gulf War occurs as it did IRL, albeit with China additionally supporting the coalition forces against Iraq.
  • The USSR collapsed as it did IRL.
  • Amid constitutional crisis in 1993, a neo-Soviet party called the KPR (Communist Party of Russia) overthrows the Yeltsinist regime and transforms the Russian Federation into the Russian People's Federation (Российская Народная Федерация/Rossiyskaya Narodnaya Federatsiya), which is like a continuation of the USSR, albeit without the other SSRs. Following this, the RPF began modeling itself after the old PRC and implement new economic reforms that results in the creation of a socialist market economy. Despite this, the remnants of the Russian Federation flees to Kaliningrad Oblast and declares it independent from the newly-formed RPF. The oblast is thereby called the "Republic of Kalinia" (Республика Калиния/Respublika Kaliniya) and most of the Baltic Fleet gets reformed as the Kalinian Navy. As of 2024, diplomatic and economic conflict is still ongoing between Russia and Kalinia.
  • The North Korean famine was so much worse than IRL, especially with a more democratic China now joining the West in sanctioning North Korea. It was so bad that conflict soon emerged in the country. In the end, around the mid-90s, South Korea deployed its armed forces to handle the situation, which would eventually lead to Korean reunification under Seoul. The reunified Korea that exists as of 2024 has the same flag, government, parties and institutions as South Korea (as well as being officially called the "Republic of Korea"). All the North Korean provinces have since been reformed as North Hamgyeong, South Hamgyeong, North Pyeongan, South Pyeongan and Hwanghae.
  • Russia peacefully annexes Belarus in 1996.
  • Yugoslavia actually splits like IRL, but the split is different. While Croatia, Slovenia, Kosovo and North Macedonia are the same as IRL, the other states are radically different. As of 2024, Yugoslavia (officially known as the "Socialist People's Republic of Yugoslavia") still exists (also as a single-party state), but it only consists of Serbia, Montenegro and North Kosovo, as well as being ruled by a different commuist party called the Workers' Party of Yugoslavia (Радничка Партија Југославије/Radnička Partija Jugoslavije/RPJ). On the other hand, Bosnia is divided between the Serbian Republic (Република Српска/Republika Srpska), aka Serbia, and the Croat-Muslim Federation (Hrvatsko-Muslimanska Federacija), aka Bosnia. The former is an ethnically Serb unitary state that controls Republika Srpska, Brčko District, Posavina Canton, Bosnian-Podrinje Canton Goražde, Ravno (which is part of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton) and a part of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County (which borders Ravno), while the latter is a predominantly Muslim federal republic that controls Sarajevo Canton (including Sarajevo), Canton 10, Tuzla Canton, Zenica-Doboj Canton, Una-Sana Canton, Central Bosnia Canton, West Herzegovina Canton and Herzegovina-Neretva Canton (excluding Ravno). The Republic of Vojvodina (Република Војводина/Republika Vojvodina/Vajdasági Köztársaság/Republica Voivodina/Република Войводина) is an independent state that mirrors Bosnia-Herzegovina by being ethnically composed of Serbs, Croats, Hungarians, Slovaks, Romanians and Pannonian Rusyns (aka "Pannonians"). Meanwhile, Yugoslavia operates a special form of socialist market economy called the "Socialist Labour Market Economy" (Социјалистичка економија тржишта рада/Socijalistička ekonomija tržišta rada), which sees workers control the market as opposed to the market being controlled by the government, although the government still regulates the economy in order to prevent it from becoming way too neoliberal.
  • The 9/11 attacks occurs as they did IRL, followed by the controversial War on Terror.
  • The Iraq War occurs as it did IRL.
  • The Syrian Civil War and the Arab Spring occurs as they did IRL.
  • Both Euromaidan and the Donbass War occurs as they did IRL.
  • In 2016, Russia purchases both Ida-Viruu County and Lääne-Viruu Country from Estonia.
  • Following Euromaidan and the Donbass War, Ukraine formally renames itself the "Western Republic of Ukraine" (Західна Республіка Україна/Zakhidna Respublika Ukrayina) as a way to distance itself from Russia and pledge allegiance to the West.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic never occurs as it did IRL.
  • The UK leaves the EU as it did IRL.

Rules (possibly subject to change)

  • Listen to OP and Co-OP.
  • Be realistic.

  • Have fun!

History: Same as IRL with some minor changes in 1969, followed by major ones several years later.

In 1969, a border conflict between the USSR and the PRC eventually turns into an all-out war, which resulted in Soviet victory. Following this, the USSR annexes both Xinjiang (as Uyghur ASSR) and Heilongjiang (as Harbin Oblast). The aftermath also weakened China, who was already both experiencing the Cultural Revolution and recovering from the Great Leap Forward. On the other hand, the USSR (and later Russia) would be locked in a conflict with Uyghur separatists in Xinjiang.

In 1993, during a constitutional crisis, Boris Yeltsin is overthrown by the Communist Party of Russia, which was formed by Ivan Zakhaev, a high-ranked KGB officer, as a successor to the CPSU. Following the coup, the KPR, reformed the Russian Federation as the Russian People's Federation, which incorporates some elements of the defunct PRC, including a socialist market economy and many government-approved parties. However, the remnants of the Russian Federation fled to Kaliningrad Oblast, which was subsequently declared independent from Russia as the Republic of Kalinia. With this, the Baltic Fleet is subsequently split between Kalinia and Russia, with only a small fraction of the fleet remaining loyal towards Russia, while a larger fraction defected and later reformed itself as the Kalinian Navy. At the same time, both ground and air forces present in Kalinia would reform themselves as the Kalinian Army and the Kalinian Air Force. Ever since this event, conflict has been brewing between Russia and Kalinia, while Kalinia continues to serve as a sanctuary for pro-democracy activists who had fled Russia. Mikhail Gorbachev, the final ruler of the USSR, was among those who fled to Kalinia following the KPR-led coup d'etat (mainly due to the KPR considering him to be responsible for the downfall of the USSR).

In 1994, both Abkhazia and South Ossetia join Russia as autonomous republics.

By 1995, Russia was able to recover its Soviet-era GDP per capita levels, mainly thanks to the economics reforms that were implemented by the KPR two years earlier.

In 1996, Russia and Belarus was holding talks about cooperation between the two countries. The talks results in Belarus willingly joining Russia as a very autonomous republic (similar to a SAR) with Alexander Lukashenko as Chief Executive.

In 1997, three bombs explodes on three buses in Ürümqi, Xinjiang (now called the Uyghur Republic or simply Uyghuristan), killing nine people (including three children) and injuring 28 more. Uyghur separatists claimed responsibility for the bombings, citing them as retribution for the execution of 30 suspected separatists and the subsequent Gulja Incident, where nine protesters were killed by the Russian security forces.

In 1998, ethnic Georgians launch an insurgency in Abkhazia, which is crushed by the Russian military within a week. At the same time, the Russian government forms a technology conglomerate named "Tenchensky" (obviously a Russian version of Tencent).

From 1999 to 2000, Russia invaded and then annexed the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria following the Islamist invasion of Dagestan. Low-level insurgency would continue until 2017.

In 2000, Gennady Yanayev, who briefly served as the head of the USSR during the failed August Coup and subsequently succeeded Ivan Zakhaev (who was dying at the time) as the Secretary-General of the KPR, is officially elected President of Russia. Following his election, Gennady promises to continue Ivan's policies and appoints Vladimir Putin as Premier. Two months later, Ivan Zakhaev dies and is given a state funeral.

In 2002, Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan forms the Common Defense Pact (CDP).

Between 2003 and 2005, Gennady implement several reforms, which includes relaxed relations with the West, active Russian participation in the US-led ISAF and creation of new infrastructure in several Russian cities designed to attract entrepreneurs and established high-tech companies to Russia. Despite this, the Russian economy remains socialist and Russia is still engaging in territorial disputes with China, Japan and Georgia. Russia also starts to invest in European countries, especially Ukraine, Serbia and, to a lesser extent, Kalinia.

In 2008, war breaks out between Russia and Georgia over the control of both Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Lasting for twelve days, the war ends in Russian victory. However, economic crisis hits Russia at the same time (due to the Great Recession that began in 2007). Protests erupts across Russia as a result. The economic crisis would last until 2009, while Gennady Yanayev steps down as President and is succeeded by Dmitri Medvedev.

In 2010, Gennady dies and is given a state funeral as a result of his contribution to Russia and its people.

In 2012, Dmitri is succeeded by Sasha Yenkov, who implements a new state ideology called "Yenkovism" (which is a Russian version of the Xi Jinping Thought). Since assuming power, Sasha has introduced far-ranging measures to enforce party discipline and impose internal unity. Sasha also appoints Vladimir Putin as Premier.

In 2013, Euromaidan takes place in Ukraine, which causes Russian influence in the country to decrease significantly.

In 2014, as a response to Euromaidan, the Russian military invades and occupies Crimea, while pro-Russian uprising occurs in eastern Ukraine. Subsequently, Crimea officially joins Russia, while Donetsk Oblast and Luhansk Oblast secedes from Ukraine. This results in both diplomatic and economic sanctions being imposed on Russia. Despite these sanctions, many Western companies are able to find profit in Russia, which is mainly due to Russia being more stronger than IRL (so the sanctions only annoys it) and that the Russian market is just as strong as the real-world Chinese market.

In 2015, pro-Russian uprising spreads to Kharkiv Oblast and Sumy Oblast. Both are subsequently annexed by Russia two years later. Also, Russia began to invest in Africa, Iran, Mongolia and South America in the form of a global infrastructure development strategy dubbed the "Global Benefit Initiative" (IGV).

In 2016, in order expand the Baltic Fleet, Russia purchases both Ida-Viruuma and Lääne-Viruuma from Estonia, which leads to further conflict with the EU. At the same time, Russia is accused of interfering with the 2016 US Presidential Election, which it fiercely denies.

In 2019, the Legislative Council of Belarus proposes a controversial extradition bill, that makes it possible for Russian authorities to extradit fugitives from Belarus. This causes massive protests across Belarus, which becomes more violent as time passes. Controversy further ensues as an eSports player is punished by Blizzard for voicing his support of the Belarusian protests. Following this, criticism gets directed at Western companies who are basically pandering to Russia due to profit, which is followed by boycott and concern from foreign governments. At the same time, Russia began setting up re-education camps in Uyghuristan and placing Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other Muslim groups there.

In 2020, the Supreme Assembly passes a "National Security Law", which causes further diplomatic controversy. At the same time, the re-education camps causes more controversy and leads to further condemnation from many governments, although some countries voices their support for Russia and its "counter-terrorist measures", which includes the re-education camps. At the same time, Russia sends peacekeeping troops to Nagorno-Karabakh when war breaks out between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Between 2021 and 2024, protests have grown exponentially across Belarus, with even calls for secession from Russia. In response to this, the Russian military declares martial law in Belarus with the blessing of Alexander Lukashenko.

The year is now 2024 and Russia shall achieve its goals, be it the easy way or the hard way.

I'm sorry, but the TDFR is basically a relic, while the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War still happened as IRL.

Oh ok. Any recommendations for nations then?
Would a restored Kemalist Turkey be a possibility (in a fictional post-2020 coup)?

Turkey might still be the same, although it would possible for the CHP to be in control of Turkey after general election (instead of coup).

Well in that case if a coup's not gonna be a thing, I'll stick to what I know best.

Also is Elizabeth II alive still in 2024?

Probably not, so Prince Charles might be King, although we don't know what his royal name would be.

Domestic Issues: Election season, opioid epidemic, massive national debt
Foreign Issues: Rise of communism once more in Russia, long lasting war in the Middle East, drug cartels in Mexico, immigrant caravans from South America, large trade deficit

History: Same as IRL, up until 2022. In the 2022 midterms, the Republicans were able to maintain the momentum they gained in the 2020 elections, gaining enough House seats to have a five seat majority, and regaining their majority in the Senate, albeit much slimmer than before, at just 51 seats. This occurred due to dissatisfaction with the Biden administration over their handling of diplomatic relations with Russia, which has been seen as soft, especially in light of what is widely seen as concentration camps. In 2023, the United States Federal debt exceeded the entire US GDP, which this year, in the 2024 elections, should prove problematic for the Biden administration AND Congressional Republicans to be re-elected, having to explain to their constituents why it got that bad under their watch.

Other Military Information: most equipment is Cold War era equipment, therefore outdated

Domestic Issues: Pro-Democracy, Anti-Government, and Anti-Communist protests across Cuba
Foreign Issues: Deals with numerous foreign sanctions (mostly from America), territorial dispute with Britain over the Cayman Islands, not very well liked by the West.

History: After numerous events since the collapse of the USSR, such as the economic fallout from the 1991 collapse of the USSR and the 2008 recession, the people of Cuba have had to deal with very poor living conditions, which the government has done little to fix. The people, fed up with the government, and with communism entirely, have begun to take to the streets in large, but peaceful protests(a bit like the Indian farmers protests irl). While the government despises these protesters, President Miguel Diaz-Canel has ordered police supervising protests not to attack the peaceful protesters, as to not worsen Cuba's already sour international image. Meanwhile, with people refusing to buy Cuban goods, the economy has gotten even worse, but given Cuba's ties to communism, other countries are very hesitant to give aid. As the NAPP argues among themselves, the communist regime is closer than ever to collapse. (So basically, it's like the 1980's East Europe situation in real life)
RP Example(s):
As the Cuban flag proudly flies over the city square in Havana, below the flag was a scene of unrest, the square filled to the brim with protesters.
These protesters held up picket signs, fists, and Cuban flags. Police officers surrounded the protesters inside the square, keeping them contained. One protester climbs on top of a bench and begins chanting "DOWN WITH THE COMMUNISTS!". The rest of the crowd began to chant along with him, creating an audible chant that could be heard throughout the streets of Havana.
Meanwhile, inside the capitol building, members of the National Assembly of People's Power had called an emergency meeting as to how to deal with protests. Unfortunately, they couldn't agree on anything, and the NAPP chamber was engulfed in chaos, people constantly arguing back and forth.
Needless to say, the situation in Cuba has never been worse.

Type of Government: Presidential Parliamentary Republic

The President is nominally the head of state, but also acts as head of government. He or she is elected every five years directly, with a simple plurality of the vote. The President appoints the Prime Minister (without needing approval from the Congress), the cabinet, directs domestic and foreign policy, can veto legislation (but this can be overruled by a two thirds majority in Congress) and can appoint Constitutional Court Judges (who need to be approved by a Congress majority of 60%). The President is limited to two terms.

The Prime Minister is nominally the head of government, but in practice acts as sort of a 'vice-president', with the President directing policy. The Prime Minister is appointed by the President and can be dismissed by him at will, without needing approval by Congress. However, the Congress can bring a motion of non-confidence (which needs a two thirds majority to be successful), which allows them to dismiss the Prime Minister. Unlike the President, the Prime Minister (being unelected) is usually a technocrat.

Constitutional Court Judges are appointed for a (renewable) term of ten years by the President, with the approval of at least 60% of Congressmen. The seven Constitutional Court Judges can rule whether a legislation or executive order is constitutional or unconstitutional.

Provinces have their own unicameral legislature (elected every four years) and Governor (appointed by the President, but needing a vote of confidence from the provincial legislature to be approved), with some autonomy of fiscal, infrastructure, educational and cultural issues. Taiwan is a Special Administrative Region, having a Premier (instead of Governor) and with increased autonomy on fiscal and regulatory policy compared to the other provinces.

Legislature (the name of your national legislature): Congress

The Congress is the parliament of China. It is comprised of 840 Congressmen, elected every three years. With the electoral system being first-past-the-post, only Kuomintang and Shehuidang candidates get elected. The Congress can propose legislature, approve or reject legislature, confirm Constitutional Court Judges, and bring forward motion of no-confidence against a Prime Minister.

Since Presidential elections happen every five years while Congressional elections every three years, there is always the possibility that the President does not have a majority in Congress. This has fostered a culture of bipartisanship, with Presidents trying to work with the opposition if they do not have a majority.

Legislative Houses (if your legislature is bicameral): Congress is unicameral.
Party in Power:

Kuomintang: center-right to right wing party, it is currently dominated by the Xinziyou Clique. It supports libertarian economics (privatizations, spending cuts, tax cuts, deregulation) and cultural conservatism (opposition to abortion, same sex marriage, drug legalization). The current President, Zhang Lianhong, belongs to the party. Kuomintang has a majority in Congress, with 429 Congressmen.

Shehuidang: center-left to left wing party, it is currently dominated by the Shehuzhi Clique. It supports a social democratic economic agenda ('Nordic' welfare state, social mobility, environmental and workplace regulations) and social liberalism (LGBT rights, drug legalization, pro-choice). Shehuidang currently controls neither the presidency nor the Congress. It has 411 Congressmen.

Public Goals: Economic growth, close ties with the United States
Private Goals: Strengthening the armed forces, containing Russia

GDP (nominal): $14.3 trillion
Currency: Renminbi
Economic System: Capitalism combined with a moderate welfare state
Major Trade Partners: United States, Japan, South Korea, United Kingdom (Hong Kong included), Vietnam, Germany, India, Netherlands
Major Exports: Electrical machinery, furniture, prefab buildings, plastics, vehicles, articles of iron or steel
Major Imports: Electrical machinery, mineral fuels, ores, medical apparatus, vehicles, plastics, gems
Defense Budget (USD): $261 billion
Alliance(s):

China is not formally aligned with any alliance, but since the 1990s has pursued a policy of close engagement with the United States and Japan, mainly as a means of containing Russia

Domestic Issues: Ageing population, increased political polarization
Foreign Issues: Threat from Russia

History:

- 1969: War with USSR leads to loss of Xinjiang and Heilongjiang
- 1971: With increased political and military instability as a result of China's military defeat, Tibet becomes independent.
- 1973: Following rapprochement with the United States, PRC is admitted in the United Nations and the United Nations Security Council in the place of RoC.
- 1978: With the loss of Xinjiang and Heilongjiang blamed on them, Maoists lose power after Mao's death and Deng Xiaoping becomes leader of China. He proceeds to gradually liberalize the economy, and China begins to see increased rates of economic growth. He also aligns PRC with US, out of antagonism to the USSR, while increasing military spending. This military build-up results in somewhat slower rates of economic growth than in RL in the early 1980s.
- 1989: Following the Tiananmen Square Massacre, Nu Leiying becomes leader of the CCP.
- 1990: After purging the CCP of radical communist elements, Nu dissolves it and replaces it with the Shehuidang, a social democratic party. In a further pivot towards the US, China supports the US-led coalition in the Gulf War.
- 1993: After three years of talks with the Kuomintang, China is reunified as the Republic of China. A Constitutional Convention is called and approves the Constitution of the Republic of China, inspired by the United States constitution.
- 1994: In the first free presidential and congressional elections, Shehuidang wins both the presidency and a majority in Congress. Nu Leiying becomes the first President of unified China. Nu would further liberalize the economy, leading to extremely high rates of economic growth.
- 1997: In the congressional elections, Kuomintang managed to gain a majority in Congress. Nu has to work with them for the next two years of his term, pushing him to adopt more fiscally conservative policies.
- 1999: Nu Leying wins a second term, but this time his victory is narrower. A constitutional amendment is passed that same year, limiting presidents to two terms.
- 2000: In the congressional elections, Shehuidang narrowly manages to wrest back its majority in Congress from the Kuomintang, allowing Nu to pursue for the next two years some more left-leaning policies: an increase in the minimum wage and increased support for poverty-stricken families. On foreign policy, Nu supports the US-led War on Terror but without committing militarily.
- 2003: In the congressional elections, Kuomintang gains the majority in Congress and gridlocks policy for the next year, frustrating the final year of Nu's presidency.
- 2004: In the presidential elections, Hu Qingwei (Kuomintang candidate) becomes President. With a Kuomintang majority in Congress, he is able to further liberalize the economy through cutting of corporate taxation and partial privatization of certain state assets. On foreign policy, he supports the US occupation of Iraq with a number of Chinese regiments, thus officially joining the War on Terror.
- 2006: In the congressional elections, Kuomintang barely holds on to its majority in Congress. This leads President Hu to adopt a more centrist approach on economics, reversing his plans to privatize the Chinese Petroleum Corporation and the Chinese Shipbuilding Corporation.
- 2009: In dual congressional and presidential elections, Hu Qingwei is reelected President and Kuomintang retains its congressional majority. In his second term, Hu retains his centrist economic outlook. On foreign policy, with increased war fatigue, he pulls back most Chinese troops from Iraq.
- 2012: In the congressional elections, Shehuidang gains a majority in congress for the first time since 2003. This leads to increased gridlock and political polarization.
- 2014: In the presidential elections, Xi Jinping of the Shehuidang wins the presidency. As President he works with the Shehuidang majority in Congress to pass a massive infrastructure spending bill.
- 2015: Riding high on Xi Jinping's success, Shehuidang managed to expand its majority in Congress. Xi Jinping unveils a stimulus package to further stimulate the Chinese economy. Kuomintang, having suffered three electoral defeats in a row, is radicalized; the centrist Guoziben Clique of former President Hu Qingwei loses control of the party to the Xinziyou Clique, a libertarian conservative faction. In 2016, Kuomintang organized massive anti-tax protests.
- 2018: Energized by those protests, Kuomintang wins a majority in Congress. Xi Jinping though manages to work with the center-leaning Kuomintang congressmen in increasing military spending, building up China's armed forces. This enrages though the hard right in Kuomintang, who opposed any cooperation with Xi.
- 2019: Xi Jinping wins a second term as President, as the Kuomintang presidential candidate failed both to energize the Xinziyou Clique and to win over moderates.
- 2021: Kuomintang retains its congressional majority, but a number of center-right congressmen had been primaried by right-wing candidates. This leads to increased gridlock and polarization, and Xi is unable to score any legislative victories aside from a spending bill that increased funding for universities and research facilities.
- 2023: Zhang Lianhong, a former extremely popular TV actor starring in period dramas and without any experience in politics, wins the Kuomintang presidential primaries with a mixture of populist and libertarian rhetoric. He argues that he will be the first "outsider President" and that he will "restore national pride".
- 2024: In the congressional elections, Kuomintang barely retains its congressional majority, as it is blamed for the increased polarization in Chinese politics. Zhang Lianhong, though, wins the Presidential elections and becomes the President of China. With a Kuomintang majority in Congress (even if it is slim), he can pursue his libertarian populist agenda.

I'd guess that more people need to join first before we launch the IC. We have our Russia and China, but we're still waiting on other major players that make the IC worthwhile.

Yeah, we could at least need USA, UK, France, Germany, Iran, Israel, Japan, Korea, Brazil, India, Pakistan, Saudi-Arabia, Australia and Italy.
