I'm absolutely mad for chess so this appeals to me. :)

Name: GM Sinan al-Ahdal

Style: -2.5

Description: Sinan al-Ahdal is an international grandmaster who holds the distinction of having been a three-time national champion. He is an expert on prophylaxis, preferring to wear opponents down through cautious defensive play, very rarely going on the attack until his opponent has made an error. al-Ahdal has championed hyper-modern openings such as the English and the Sicilian (usually the Najdorf Variation) for much of his career, and chess pundits consistently rate him as a master of the Sicilian.

Permissions: You may do as you like so long as it is sensible and in-character.

Name: GM Elissa Tanas

Style: +1.75

Description: Elissa Tanas is an international grandmaster and chess prodigy who recently won Fahran's national women's chess championship at the tender age of seventeen. She has an intuitive mastery of positional play and a relentless attacking style described by pundits as "ruthless" or "aggressive." As white, her preference is to play a largely open game, usually resorting to pawn e4 before going into the Ruy Lopez or the King's Gambit. As black, she tends to play the King's Indian Defense or a Sicilian.

Permissions: You may do as you like so long as it is sensible and in-character.

That means that we have reached the target of 24 signups. 1 more nation/player can sign up, and the format will be changed to 25, but no more than 25 players will be permitted to take part.

Garbelia, since you aren't on the NSS discord, can I post there when results are up?
Silvedania, the majestic nation.
NS Stats are mostly accurate except for a few things, like this nation is capitalist and the death penalty isn't in effect

News:All trade with Crabaiaia and Pikala has stopped as diplomats meet in Trenaka. Silvedanians are confused by Quentin Tarantulatino's new film, Seasonal Snackbox(This is a Bojack Horseman reference.) Weird song goes viral for making no sense.

I imagine we'll have an IC Thread up at some point for RP posts and results.

There is already an IC thread, to be found here. The draw will be conducted on it in approximately 2 hours. (17:15 GMT)

Since I feel like folks here know and appreciate chess, I feel like giving credit to the IRL and fictional influences behind the two GMs I entered into the tournament.

GM Sinan al-Ahdal is largely influenced by Tigran Petrosian and a teacher of mine who encouraged me to play chess when I was in middle school and the only girl in the club. His own style of play took quite a bit from his personal heroes Anatoly Karpov and the late, great José Raúl Capablanca.

GM Elissa Tanas uses the likeness of the former Egyptian national chess champion Mona Khaled but takes a lot of her substance from Judit Polgár, who inspired many of the female international masters and grandmasters of today and was notable for her aggressive style of play - some have even argued that women tend to play chess more aggressively than men due to her being a source of inspiration for many of us. She's probably the closest person to a real-life Beth Harmon - who was another source of influence, minus the crippling addictions.

Love the detail, Fahran. Although I'm now going to have to rethink my own Beth Harmon insert...

Garbelia, please could you edit the draw into the first post so we can refer back to it more easily?

I will, but due to timezones, I can't right now. EDIT: Done now, it is on the IC thread.

FIRST MATCH FOR IVAN AND EDITA

Postby Raspotochje » Wed Feb 03, 2021 8:24 am

WEB SITE OF THE CHESS FEDERATION RASPOTOCHJE

The matches of our grandmasters at the chess championship will be followed on the internet stations of the chess federation Raspotochje.

In a video address to the general public, the president of the Chess Federation said, among other things:
"It is a great honor to have two representatives at such a prestigious tournament. Raspotochje is a young country, eager for promotion in the world and chess is a great promotion. Grandmasters around the world will gather and try to win the title of best. Follow all matches through our website and cheer for our We believe in the good results of Edita Vukorepac and Ivan Habijanić".

IVAN HABIJANIĆ: 32 years old, born in Kotiga, the fifth child of a poor family. He didn't fit in at school, he had high intelligence and the other children bored him. He started playing chess at the age of 7, every day when he returned from school he passed through the park where older retirees played chess. He liked it and started playing. At the age of 11 he only became the youngest junior champion in Kotiga and at the age of 13 he became the champion in the whole of Raspotochje. He started competing in the senior competition at the age of 16 when he got his license. Already in the same year, he reached the finals of two medium-strong tournaments.
The following year, he won a New Year's tournament in Raspotochje, which featured over 200 chess players from across the country. That tournament paved the way for him and he remained undefeated in the next 18 tournaments. He became a grandmaster at just 22 years old. Then he entered a crisis of personal life and at the age of 25 he was treated for alcohol and drugs. Chess raises him again from the hell of opiates and at the age of 27 he becomes the champion of Raspotochje again, and it has remained so to this day.

EDITA VUKOREPAC: 26 years old, born in Višnjevac, she loved mathematics at school, she was in a mathematics competition at the age of eight. In the school hallway, she saw two older boys playing chess on a small board. She saw the board for the first time then and decided to play chess. At the age of 9, she went to Kotig for a school competition where she swept the competition.
That same year, she became the champion of the Višnjevac region, and the following year she won first place at the national championship for under-11s without losing a game. Then Vili Žmak, the grandmaster's coach, noticed her and went to talk to her parents about her future.
She was the youngest chess player to sign for a chess club for a monthly fee. It was outrageous because it was not legal for a child to receive a monthly allowance for work. The mother took on the role of tutor and they both went to Kotiga with Vili Žmak.
At the age of 20, she became the champion of Raspotochje, and she repeated that the following year. This year she gets the status of grandmaster and is the only woman who beat the champion Ivan Habijanić three more times in a row, but she never managed to be ahead of him in the final table. Last season, Ivan Habijanić was better by only 1.5 points and became the champion.

I can't scorinate today's matches, but they'll be done tomorrow, and the rest of the schedule will not be delayed.

I think there was an error in one of the scoring or tables for this matchday. My representative (Aveline Cohen-Solal) appears to have drawn with her opponent, Lutri Ottodottir, but has not gained half a point. Ottodottir has instead taken the full point. Did my competitor lose that game?

Oh, sorry, I need to amend that. My threshold for drawn is less than a 1 point difference to the number the scorinator calculated, and that was 1.003 above.

Seeing as Ottodottir is my representative, I'll give you the half point. Cohen-Solal is now level on points with the 2 competitors shown above her, and Lutri is only 1/2 a point above.
