Demonym bug

Postby Jura-Tempest » Wed Jan 27, 2021 6:35 am

I encountered a problem with changing the settings. I'm trying to change my nation's plural demonym to, 'Subjects of Rimuru' but every time I try to save the change, it just changes back to 'Subject of Rimurus'. Is there any way to fix this?

You can change your demonym (and its plural variation) in your settings.

I've just had a play around with it, and it's definitely exhibiting some odd behaviour.

When I initially typed in "Subject of Rimuru" as the noun-demonym, the pluralisation system correctly recognised the plural as "Subjects of Rimuru" and auto-updated the plural-noun-demonym field accordingly. But, when I clicked update, it seems to have reverted automatically to "Subject of Rimurus", which is obviously incorrect. Evidently whatever pluralisation system runs in-browser to suggest the correct one is different from whatever runs on-site to validate that you've submitted a plural phrase instead of a singular, and only the in-browser one is correct. This is something that will techie input to fix whatever algorithm does the pluralisation, so it's anyone's guess how quickly (or if at all) it gets fixed.

As an aside, the suggested sentence for the adjective-demonym is a bit misleading; having a phrase that fits in that sentence does not guarantee that it will fit in any issue where that custom field appears. In fact, the phrase "I'm proud to be @@demonymadj@@" doesn't appear in any published issue so far. Grammatically, I don't have the technical knowledge to break down why that phrase is different (using words like "participle" and "appositive") and requires a different adjective to normal, but I know it does. A better sentence to test the fit would be something like "@@demonymadj@@ citizens are really cool", or "A quick brown @@demonymadj@@ citizen jumped over the lazy dog". I only brought this up because you've kinda fallen into the trap of that sentence by having "a @@demonymnoun@@" for your adjective-demonym, which fits in the sentence that the settings page gives you but sounds out of place in basically every issue ever.
