2021: A New Decade

Image

IC|Discord|Map: Coming soon

The 2020s. A decade set to be nightmarish and a turning point in the history of humanity. Climate Change is the existential threat that must urgently be tackled in this decade, and humanity must learn to cope with the constantly growing population that does not look likely to slow down let alone stop growing anytime soon.

In Asia, the Chinese Dragon is emerging as the regional hegemon, pushing regional nations to choose sides between them and the West while internally the regime battles against resistance in Hong Kong and ethnic tension in the far West. In India, the nation is dealing with religious unrest and rapid economic growth and modernization as well as increasing tension along the border with Pakistan, particularly in the Kashmir Region.

In Europe, Euroskepticism is on the rise in many European nations. The successful Brexit referendum led the charge showing Euroskeptics all across the continent that leaving was possible. In Spain regional tensions threaten to explode between Madrid and Barcelona.

In the Middle East, tensions between Israel and Iran are at an all-time high. Adding to this is the emerging regional cold war between Saudi Arabia and Iran. In Yemen, the civil war still burns as a testing ground for this regional cold war.

In Africa, ethnic and religious tensions pose a danger all over the continent. In the Congo, warlords fight over land and resources like coltan offering fortunes on the international market. In the Saraha and Sahel regions, remnants of ISIS and other organizations ravage the land and people. Yet there are lights of hope that still sparkle.

In North America, Canada is dealing with ever-increasing political divides much like the US to the South. Inside the US tensions between Republicans and Democrats have never seemed worse. In Mexico, the Cartels fight hard against the central government in Mexico City their corruption touches most parts of the nation.

In Latin America, the dictator Nicholas Maduro still clings to power even as his position is contested by Juan Guaidó. In Colombia, an unstable peace agreement official holds peace between the government and FARC.

How will the nations of the world tackle these issues? How will their pasts define their future, which nations will come out on top during this decade, and how will future generations remember this critical decade?

In this roleplay, you will take the helm of the nation of your choice. You have the ability to change the history of your nation from 1991 onwards within realism and with a few major event exceptions as well as anything states in the OP or other applications.

Nation Name: Republic of Gavdos (Dimokratia tis Gavdou/Δημοκρατία της Γαύδου)
Capital: Kastri
Territory: Gavdos (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavdos) and Gavdopoula (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavdopoula)
Population: 217
Official Language: Greek

Head of State:

President: Nikos Romanos
Vice-President: Giorgos Mavrotas

Gavdos is a presidential republic. The President (Proedros/Πρόεδρος) is both head of state and head of government. He is elected directly every five years on a joint ticket with a Vice-President (Antiproedros/Αντιπρόεδρος), for a maximum of two terms. The President directs foreign and domestic policy, holds veto power over legislation, and appointed the Supreme Court Judges. The Vice-President, being a member of the legislative chamber, is the one who proposes government legislation into the chamber.

HoS Picture:

Head of Government: Same

Due to the small size and population of Gavdos, there is no sub-national level of government. Instead, the central government directs all governmental affairs. The central government is led by the President and Vice-President who head a cabinet of four ministers: Minister of Finance (responsible for all matters with regards to taxation, fiscal and monetary policy, and trade), Minister of Interior (responsible for the judicial system, education, healthcare and social welfare), Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defense (responsible for police/military forces). The ministers have to be confirmed by the parliament in order to be appointed, with a simple majority. The Ministry of Defense is traditionally held by the current Chief of General Staff.

HoG Picture (If different from HoS): Same
Legislature Name:

The legislative chamber of Gavdos is called Parliament (Vouli/Βουλή). The parliament has 10 MPs (Vouleutes/Βουλευτές), elected every two years. Due to small size of Gavdos, there is only a single electoral district. The MPs are responsible for introducing legislation, supporting or rejecting legislation proposed by the government (Vice-President) or other MPs, and confirming appointments to the Supreme Court. The Vice-President acts as Speaker of the Parliament. He does not have voting powers, but if there is a tie he is granted the power to break it. The President has the right to veto legislation, but the parliament can override it with a two-thirds majority.

As parliamentary elections are every two years and presidential elections every five years, there is always the possibility of a President having to work with a parliament controlled by the opposition. This has fostered a culture of consensus-building and occasional bipartisanship.

The Supreme Court (Anotato Dikastirio/Ανώτατο Δικαστήριο) is responsible for assessing the constitutionality of legislation and government initiatives. The three Supreme Court Judges are appointed by the President for lifetime, but they have to be confirmed by a two thirds majority of the parliament. As such, judges tend to moderate politically.

Party in Power (If bicameral note who controls each):

Gavdos has a two party system:

National Hope – a center-right party, it supports fiscal and social conservatism. It wants Gavdos to remain a low-tax economy, opposes government regulation of the economy and is opposed to same-sex marriage and cannabis legalization. It supports a close relationship with Greece, Cyprus and the United Kingdom but stands opposes to joining the European Union.

Liberal Alliance – a centrist party, it is socially liberal and fiscally moderate. It supports modest increases in taxation and welfare spending, along with some increased oversight of the private sector, but overall supports the current free-market consensus. On social issues, it seeks to legalize same-sex marriage and cannabis for recreational use. It wants Gavdos to join the European Union.

The current Preside belongs to the Liberal Alliance, and is serving the first year of his term. The Parliament has 6 MPs belonging to National Hope and 4 MPs belonging to Liberal Alliance.

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP):

In 1895, the islands of Gavdos and Gavdopoula were leased to the British Empire by the Ottoman Empire. The small islands were used by the British as storage facilities, especially for travels of British vessels to the British colony of Cyprus and British-influenced Egypt. In 1931, Gavdos was given autonomy as the British permitted the formation of a local parliament (Vouli). During WWII, the islands were occupied by Germany. After their liberation, despite protests by the Kingdom of Greece, Gavdos and Gavdopoula remained British territories until 1961. British rule led to urbanization due to investments in Gavdos and better infrastructure.

In 1961, Gavdos and Gavdopoula became independent as the 'Republic of Gavdos', the British no longer being interested in administering this tiny bit of land. A referendum in 1962 rejected union with Greece, as many of the inhabitants had republican sympathies and an antipathy for the Greek monarchy (a sentiment shared by the Greek island of Crete in the north). Instead, a Treaty of Cooperation was signed in Athens in 1963, establishing an agreement that Greece would be responsible for Gavdos' defense in exchange for freedom of movement between the two countries and close foreign policy cooperation.

Relations with Greece were strained during the military junta (1967 – 1974), which caused a second referendum of union with Greece to be rejected in 1971, but relations were restored after the restoration of democracy. Gavdos remains a committed ally and friend of Greece. Since the late 1970s, Gavdos expanded its economic output by acting as a tax heaven, with near zero taxation. It has thus managed to flourish – for an island of its size – and remain an independent country.

Recent issues that plague the country have to do with increased polarization over potential membership in the European Union and dealing with increased international criticism over its status as a tax heaven.

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP):

-->After German reunification in 1990, the FDP’s popularity and party base swells because of its deeply pro-capitalist stance and an increased interest in the party from the former GDR. (Note: this happened IRL, to begin with) To keep this success going, the FDP decides to become the party of the masses (unlike the SDP which portrayed itself as the worker’s party, or the CSD/CSU which was the more conservative/traditionalist party. The revamp occurred from German Reunification until the 1994 elections and was overseen by Klaus Kinkel. These results led to the FDP becoming the third-largest party in the Bundestag in the 1994 elections.

-->The 1998 elections were a repeat as the CSU/CDU and the SDP lost ground again to the FDP. This was in part because of the FDP strategically campaigning in the former GDR and becoming more of the centrist libertarian party in German politics, a shift underway since the early 1990s.

-->In 2009, the FDP and CSU/CDU formed a coalition center-right government. It was during the economic crisis of the time that the FDP and CSU/CDU showed that they were able to keep the German economy healthy compared to other EU nations.

-->Despite the backlash against the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster around the world, Germany bucked the trend. Partially in an attempt to “go green” but mainly to reduce Germany’s reliance on foreign energy sources, a strong push for nuclear and renewables took place. This was largely aided by the Fukushima disaster being strategically hidden by the press because the big-ticket news at the time was the Arab Spring revolts in North Africa and the Middle East. In turn, safety precautions were heightened at German nuclear reactors, and a plan to replace the aging nuclear reactors across the country was put in place.

-->The 2013 elections were in effect a repeat in many ways of the 2009 elections, albeit that the SDP and CSU/CDU gained some ground against the FDP.

-->Because of the European Migrant Crisis, and Merkel’s much-criticized handling of the crisis, the FDP and SDP teamed up on the CSU/CDU. The FDP pushed its new policies of more restrictive migration policies, investment in East Germany, societal liberalism, economic liberalism, increased military spending, and a strong belief in the EU. With this platform, the FDP managed to come in first in terms of seats in the Bundestag, with the SDP close behind. But the true shock of the party was the entry into the Bundestag of the AfD, the first time a truly right-wing party had won seats in the Bundestag, since 1957.

-->With Christian Lindner now as Chancellor, several changes began. The first was the legalization of marijuana, the next was the increase of the German military budget to 3% of the GDP, the partial privatization of state assets, increases in education spending, increases in infrastructure spending, reduced internet surveillance, and all while cutting taxes on the lower and middle class. Compounding all this was a fairly aggressive green growth policy and attempts to turn Eastern Germany into the German Silicone Valley.

Other Military Information: Following the drawdown in Iraq and Afghanistan and the increased military build-up of the Chinese in the South China Sea, the US military began a concerted effort to restructure for peer and near-pear warfare while maintaining a counterinsurgency capability. Part of this involved a study on the efficacy of the Brigade Combat Team, with the conclusion that units needed to become more decentralized and flexible to reduce vulnerability to stand off munitions and drones. Other efforts included the Next Generation Squad Weapon, Infantry Automatic Rifle, Next Generation Combat Vehicle, and a series of land, sea, and air drones for reconnaissance and combat use. The most recent acquisition was the THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle, with several logistics, combat, ISR, and EOD variants being ordered for evaluation and deployment. A proposal has also been levied by the Armed Forces to approach US allies for weapon systems. Notable possibilities include South Korea, China, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP): Several US military programs in the early 21st century that IRL were cancelled came to fruition. Notably the XM2001 Crusader artillery system, the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle, and the RAH-66 Comanche. The M2001 and its companion M2002 resupply vehicle started replacing the M109 Paladin in 2008. The Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle began replacing Assault Amphibian Vehicles in 2015. And the RAH-66 began supplementing the AH-64 in 2008. Additionally, the Common Support Aircraft began development in 2006 and achieved initial operational capability in 2016, replacing the C-2 and E-2 aircraft with variants being introduced to reintroduce the roles once held by the S-3 Viking.
Improved relations with the USSR led to cooperative efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan against Islamist terror groups. As a result of that, the purchase of F-35s by Turkey was not prevented by the Trump administration.
In the waning months of the Bush presidency, the USSR joined Operation Enduring Freedom in 2008, sending troops to aid the fight against Islamist terror groups in Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa. Later aggrements would see US and USSR forces fighting alongside each other in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia, and several other countries as parts of Enduring Freedom, Resolute Support, and Inherent Resolve. However, an apparent lack of commitment from the US, reinforced by continuing reductions in US troop numbers and several attempts to negotiate a peace deal with the Taliban, have seen relations strained between the two superpowers. President Wilkerson will be forced to demonstrate America's continued committment to combatting global terrorism in order to save the relationship with the USSR.

Wilkerson’s political career began when he was 25 in the 2000 elections as a representative of the state of Illinois. As a young Republican from a mostly liberal state, he believed in some of the conservative Republican values, like having a strong military, low taxes, and reduced government interference in the economy. But he also held some decidedly liberal values, such as a support for abortion and non-conformal relationships. While he won three terms in the US House of Representatives, he did lose his seat in 2006 to a more conservative Republican, largely due to his vocal opposition to many of President Bush’s policies. He returned to Congress in the 2008 election and supported many of the policies of Barack Obama, which helped him clinch a Senate run in 2010, a seat he would hold until the election in 2016, when he would lose to a Democratic candidate. He would continue to be politically active throughout the Trump presidency, largely through speaking with people around the nation about different issues and securing a House seat in the 2018 midterm elections. In late 2019, he announced at a small gathering of supporters that he would not be seeking re-election to the House. Instead, he would be seeking the office of the Presidency.

During the 2020 presidential election campaign, Wilkerson focused less on Trump’s failures and more on what still needed to be done. Thousands of US troops were still in Iraq and Afghanistan, fighting wars that had started nearly two decades ago. The economy’s growth was slowing and there were major fears that the Chinese were trying to harm US companies and people.
It was clear to many that a change was needed. Trump’s presidency had driven wedges between the United States and many of her most important strategic allies. Americans were paying more for imported goods due to the trade war with China. On top of that, the only two other candidates who seemed viable had major scandals clouding their campaigns.
Trump’s impeachment trial and his increasingly unpredictable behavior had badly split the opinion of Republicans. Unfortunately, Joe Biden wasn’t a much better option. His aggressive stance against those who supported Trump and the very suspect dealings of his son with foreign governments ensured that actually support was limited. Had the race been limited to Biden or Trump, the race may have been a very close one indeed. But with an established name to oppose them, the race was far more decisive. With 90 million citizen votes and 300 electoral votes, Wilkerson was elected president and inaugurated on January 20th 2021.

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP):[list]

- No PDI split in 1996. Suharto's efforts to create a split within Indonesia's second-largest (albeit still a puppet of the central government) party failed, and Megawati Soekarnoputri asserted total control of the PDI. The name of the party was changed (to PDI Perjuangan/PDI-P). Therefore, no Saturday 27 mob in Jakarta.

- Indonesian Banks rely less on the US Dollar pre-1997; instead preferring to diversify their loaning under the Bank Indonesia policy (by loaning in Franc, Poundsterling, Mark, Guilder, Lira, and Yen; assortments of international currency in an effort to be less dependent on the greenback). Therefore, Indonesia was not as hard hit by the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis like it was in real life.

- No mass capital flight from Indonesia during 1997-98; the main cause was that Indonesian banks, while faced with a devaluation of the Rupiah compared to the USD, still had a large reserve of other foreign currency as well as gold and Rupiah to service debts. Bank Indonesia was able to handle the crisis quite well. However, Suharto still suffered a minor stroke in 1997 that prevented him from attending the ASEAN Presidents' Summit.

- Mass rioting and looting did not happen as severe as it was in real life, particularly because the monetary crisis did not hit Indonesia so hard (GDP fell by 35-38%, several points above Thailand, the source of the crisis). However, the Indonesian Reformation still happened, and Suharto was forced to step down from power. His successor, President B.J. Habibie, passed laws granting autonomy, political freedom, freed many political prisoners and also held a referendum in East Timor. Military personnel were withdrawn immediately, so there was little to no human rights violations. The Corruption Eradication Commission was formed in 1999 to investigate New Order corrupt bureaucrats and cronies, and confiscate their wealth. A new job and investment legislation is passed, allowing faster economic recovery and easier investment avenues in Indonesia. The Ministry of Information and Ministry of Welfare, two of the New Order's primary weapons to stranglehold the country (the former to control the media and the latter presenting a large corruption problem) was disbanded; the Corruption Eradication Commission was authorized to imprison ex-New Order bureaucrats.

- In 2002, to prevent the tensions across the country as experienced under President Abdurrahman Wahid, the MPR authorized the 4th amendment of the 1945 Indonesian Constitution. It formally changed the name of first-level subdivisions from province to state, and granted states greater autonomy in regional government (similar to Indian states). However, the clause of Indonesia being an "Unitary State" is still maintained; and political parties must also adhere to the Pancasila (Indonesia's national ideology as laid out in the 1945 constitution), although, given that Pancasila encompassed a broad spectrum of politics, this clause was not very limiting on the formation of political parties.

- In 2006, real per capita income has surpassed fiscal year of 1996/1997 levels, and was well on track to resume Indonesia's pre-1997 growth levels. 2007 and 2008 recorded an unprecedented spike of 8.0% to 9.0% before being slowed down by the 2008 financial crisis. Unlike many of its more export-dependent neighbours, Indonesia managed to skirt the Great Recession, helped by strong domestic demand (which makes up about two-thirds of the economy) and a government fiscal stimulus package of about 1.4% of GDP. After India and China, Indonesia became the third-fastest growing economy in the G20. The $512-billion-economy expanded 7.4% in the first quarter from a year earlier, and in the previous month, the IMF revised its 2009 forecast for the country to 5-6% from 4.5%. With the rapid reduction of public and external debt, strengthening of public and corporate sector banking sheets, and capitalization to reduce banking vulnerabilities, Indonesia managed to reach an unemployment rate of 5.8% in 2012.

- In 2016, mass protests happened in Jakarta as a result of Jakarta (ethnic Chinese and Christian) governor Basuki "Ahok" Purnama's alleged defamation of the Qur'an. However, it was later found out that the evidence to this accusation is, in fact, an edited video. Subsequently the Central Jakarta District Court ruled that Purnama was not guilty of blasphemy. A rally was held by conservative groups on 2th December, 2016 (the 212 Movement). This surge of popular outcry cost Purnama his re-election as Jakarta Governor. However, when protesters rioted, demanded for Purnama to be thrown in jail, President Widodo (the former Governor of Jakarta; Purnama was his vice-governor) authorized the mass arrest of protesters, faced with charges of destroying public facilities, defamations, and hate speech. The Indonesian Military patrolled the streets of Jakarta for three months, until tensions subsided. Meanwhile, the conservative cleric al-Habib Muhammad Rizieq Shihab, one of the Movement's primary supporters, became involved in a criminal case involving sexually explicit messages he exchanged with Firza Hussein. Subsequently Shihab fled to Mecca, Saudi Arabia (to perform 'umrah), but has not since returned to Indonesia. The Indonesian National Police issued an arrest warrant for him in case he ever returned. Government crackdowns towards conservative groups, however, still happened - with several critics saying that Indonesia "is sliding backwards towards the New Order era".

- House of Representatives speaker Setya Novanto, involved in a mass corruption scandal (regarding the electronic ID card program thaw was implemented across Indonesia), was caught by the Corruption Eradication Commission. Further investigations reveal even bigger corruption scandal involving many government officials. All of them was subsequently seized and imprisoned in the island prison of Nusa Kambangan (off the coast of Central Java), while several new anti-corruption laws are passed on the parliament. This incident helped to massively reduce the amount of government corruption in Indonesia.

- A series of infrastructure (highways, ports, airports, and more) projects as well as a new job creation and investment law was passed on 2019, shortly after President Widodo's re-election. This further increased foreign investment in Indonesia, especially with the booming trade war between the United States and China.

Other Military Information:
The All-African Patriotic Conscripts of Zimbabwe, otherwise known as the Abathanda Ubuzwe, is a mass force loosely organized as a popular front type unit. This force is often only called up officially in full strength during times of war, though can be thought of in a contemporary sense as a combination of rough-housing secret police during elections to "ensure the vote goes the right way" via intimidation and acting as a mass labor pool that the military can readily rely upon for mass construction or natural disaster relief, such as in a famine distributing food supplies. The Abathanda Ubuzwe, unlike certain factions of the armed forces, is embedded with a devoted loyalty to the President. While their military training is lackluster in comparison to the armed forces, they make up for it in sheer numbers and being an efficient force for almost whatever the President deems important enough. As a way to avoid any potential issues regarding bitter factionalism within the ZANU-PF, the force is under the direct command of President Robert Mugabe himself.

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP):
Grace Mugabe's G40 faction of political supporters opt to instead of privately backing "Gucci" Grace, instead opt to go all in for support for President Robert Mugabe, blasting Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa. This infuriates many older generals, former veterans of the Rhodesian bush wars that had served with the Vice-President, so from the night of November 7 to 10, 2017, the older generals attempt a coup attempt. While Grace lacked internal popularity within much of the party, her husband still enjoyed many political allies, so marshalled enough forces to combat the attempted Coup attempt. As many as one hundred people are killed in the confused and bloody street-to street fighting, ruining portions of the capital city.

Eventually, Robert Mugabe comes to a decision, he opts to condemn the remarks of his wife and enters into talks with the generals. The negotiations are lengthy, mostly revolving around an urge for Robert to resign from office and his steadfast refusal of such a proposal. Eventually, he agrees to sack his wife, removing her from all the important political positions and dismissing many of those of the G40 faction from power. While he appeases the veterans, this infuriates his wife, resulting in another attempted coup attempt by the G40 faction. As the last one, however, the military backs Mugabe in opposition to the G40 faction, resulting in Vice-President Mnangagwa purging the ZANU-PF political rank and file of G40 faction members in favor of military commanders.

Seeing the disillusionment that the G40 faction has to those closest to the President, Mugabe opts to organize a personal militia force known as the Abathanda Ubuzwe to ensure top political power. The Abathanda Ubuzwe has been seen at many ceremonial events, almost sidling the "disloyal" army. The scene is tentatively set between those closest to Mugabe's political orbit and those from the armed forces which grow resentful of this new "poisonous" faction that surrounds the President. Time can only tell if another military coup would be attempted, and who might lead Zimbabwe in the event of President Mugabe, now approaching his 97th birthday, passing away...

Other Military Information: The Soviet military underwent extensive modernization programs since the '90s resulting in a larger portion of military equipment being more modern and less outdated than the IRL Russian Armed Forces. The USSR also maintains the largest nuclear arsenal. In addition the Tu-16 was not retired but instead modernized to the Tu-16M and is still in service.

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP):

1991: The major break in the Soviet history in this timeline is the success of Gorbachev’s Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics plan due to a failed August coup after the coup plotters were found out and arrested. Following this, the Soviet government approved the plan and announced that the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics would be dissolved December 31st, 1991 at 11:59 PM and that the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics would come into existence at 12 AM January 1st, 1992 with the Constituent Republics of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan. Gorbachev was selected to be the acting President of the new union until elections, scheduled for November of 1992, were held to elect a new President and legislature to replace the current Congress of People's Deputies of the Soviet Union. Also, earlier in the year Gorbachev had started the process of allowing the Rouble to be converted to other currencies.

1992: As the new Union came into being, Gorbachev announced that, in order to help move on from the past, he was leaving the Communist party and launching his United Union Party (Объединенная партия Союза) that was a big-tent reformist and Unionist party. In February, the USSR reached an agreement with Georgia that saw Soviet forces assisting Georgia against South Ossetian rebels and later Abkhazian rebels. In return, Georgia agreed to join the new USSR with a high amount of autonomy over domestic issues. In the election in November, Gorbachev won a five-year term as President of the Union and his United Union Party won 275 seats out of the 500 total in the lower house with the Communist party coming in second with 125 seats and various other minor parties and a few dozen independent candidates making up the remaining 100 seats. Following the devastating election results, the Communist Party was split between a hardliner and social democrat faction, the latter forming the Soviet Social Democrats and the hardliners turning the rump Communist party into an anti-reform and pro-centralization/collectivization party.

1993: On January 5th, the newly elected members of the Union Duma and the newly appointed members of the Council of the Republics took their seats. The Duma voted in UPP Parliamentary leader, Sergei Kovalev, was elected as Prime Minister. President Gorbachev, a Social Democrat at heart, also pushed for the inclusion of the newly formed SSD party in the government giving them the healthcare, agriculture and food, and civilian construction portfolios. On January 10th, Gorbachev was sworn in as the first elected President of the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics.

1994: By the start of 1994 the economic benefits of a correctly handled and increased transition to a free market were starting to be seen as the Soviet economy started to grow faster than it had in decades owing to the opening of trade with the world and allowance of private companies within the USSR coupled with the ending of all price controls and allowing the Rouble to be converted that had occurred since 1991 and 1992. At the end of the year, the first Chechen war had broken out and President Gorbachev ordered Soviet forces into the region.

1995: President Gorbachev announced the creation of the Eurasian Security Organization or ESO between the USSR, Mongolia, and Armenia.

1996: As the Chechen war finally come to a close following agreements signed that saw Soviet federal troops removed from Chechnya. The horrible management of the war by the older establishment Generals and the bloody fighting that resulted in the needless deaths of soldiers and civilians resulted in large internal and external backlash. Harnessing this momentum, Gorbachev launched a massive reform of the Soviet military and security apparatus under his new Modernizatsiya (modernization) program which saw the positions of Defense Minister and KGB head require confirmation from both houses of the Supreme Soviet and be filled by civilians. In addition many of the older top Generals, put in place largely owing solely to connections and loyalty to the old Communist Party, were forced to retire making way for a younger and more professional generation to fill their spots. In addition a multi-year reduction of the overall military size, particularly the navy, was launched with conscription being ended and replaced with a volunteer based military.

1997: As the year started, Gorbachev announced that he would run for re-election, bolstered by the popular support of his reforms and the still strong economic growth he wins a second term as President but makes clear it will be his last. His party also still retains power, gaining 20 seats and Gorbachev nominates Boris Yelstin for PM.

1998: After the new legislature takes its seats, Yeltsin is confirmed as PM and promises to continue pushing for common-sense reforms. In addition the second, and fully completed Kuznetzov class carrier, was not sold to a Chinese buyer and was instead placed in the reserve fleet.

1999: Late in the year the Second Chechen war erupted like in our timeline. Much like in our timeline, this time around the Soviet military acted swiftly and effectively.

2000: By the end of May, President Gorbachev announced the ending of combat operations in Chechnya. However, insurgency still remained a problem.

2001: Gorbachev announces that Moldova has officially joined the ESO.

2002: Riding high on the success of his economic, political, and societal reforms, Gorbachev reaffirmed that we would stay true to his word and not run for re-election, instead of throwing his support behind the then-current Prime Minister of the Russian Republic, Vladimir Putin who was seen as a champion of the Gorbachev Reforms and a political apprentice of USSR Prime Minister Boris Yeltsin. With this support, Putin won the election, pledging to continue with the reforms while also starting a rebuilding and second modernization of the military following the years of cuts and professionalization under Gorbachev, notably ordering the updating and refitting of the two remaining Kiev class ships into full carriers. The UUP still retained the majority although losing some ground to the newly formed Soviet Nation Party.

2003: As Putin’s first term started, he embarked on a campaign of reinvigorating the Soviet image abroad, working with Western nations and even actively working with the US led ISAF in Afghanistan by providing air support and special forces for targeted strikes. By the end of the year, a few hundred Soviet soldiers were stationed in Kabul to act as security and help in training Afghan forces. On the economic side, Putin pushed for even more diversification away from a reliance of fossil fuels.

2005: As part of his push for a diverse economy, Putin uses Government resources to creates new infrastructure in several Soviet cities designed to attract entrepreneurs and established high tech companies to the Union.

2007: President Putin wins re-election to a second term, still riding high on the economic success that has been a hallmark of the UUP party.

2008: The Soviet Union joins with the US in Operation Enduring Freedom. As the global recession finally hit the USSR, the economy slowed but did not hit a point of recession as the government shifted most of its focus to combating it.

2010: Midway through Putin’s second term, he championed a wide-reaching change to terms for elected officials which say the Presidential term reduced to four years, the upper chamber of the Supreme Soviet set at 6 years, and the Duma member’s terms set to 2 years to take effect in 2012. By the end of the year, the Soviet economy again started to grow at above 2%.

2012: As the new year opened, President Putin announced he would not be seeking a new term, instead throwing his support behind the then Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev whose main pledges included creating a larger green sector of the economy, continuing economic growth, and continuing to strengthen the USSR’s position on the world stage. Medvedev wins this election but sees the UUP party only retain a 10 seat majority with the Soviet Nation Party coming in second at 100 seats.

2014: A year into President Medvedev’s term he shifted the focus of modernization programs towards the navy which had taken a back seat to the Army and Air Force, the latter two both seeing massive success with the program. The hallmark public optic victory of this was the updating and modernization of the USSR’s chief carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov. On an economic front, Medvedev started pushing for the idea of the USSR as an ideal middle man for trade between Europe and Asia, putting large investments into the Central Asian republics.

2016: As the election period started, President Medvedev announced his re-election bid. However, this time around he publicly supported the new parliamentary coalition of the UUP and Soviet Nation Party. After winning the election, Medvedev appointed Alexander Lebed of the SNP as Defense Minister, the first time an SNP member had served in the government.

2020: As Medvedev announces his retirement, he endorses Vasily Orlov, the then Minister of Internal Affairs. Orlov decides to continue the Medvedev era electoral and parliamentary coalition between the UUP and SNP. Orlov won the election and the UUP-SNP coalition controlled 320 of the 500 Duma seats. With this success and support, Orlov announced that following his inauguration in the coming January, he would seek talks with the US about their joint missions in Iraq and Afghanistan following nearly 8 years of perceived lack of interest and commitment coming from the US.

2021: On January 5th the new Supreme Soviet members are sworn in and the Duma chooses Dmitry Artyukhov as PM. On January 10th, Vasily Orlov is sworn in as President.

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP): Brexit happened, however - the results ended up being much more worse than many had expected. As Boris Johnson ended up being unable to get a proper deal with the EU before the turn of 2021.

Thus the end results were a complete and utter failure in terms of preparation for the United Kingdom leaving with a hard brexit - the sudden shock resulted in hundreds of thousands losing their jobs, their livelihood and the Tories going from popular to hated in almost in a singular week at that.

Due to the failure to prepare or even take into account the massive loss in services, goods or even people - resulted in the Pound dropping in value by half after the 1st of January 2021 rolled over. Since then, the Tories have promised snap-elections to counter-act the sudden and massive rise in riots, civil unrest and potential for even a return to the Troubles...except all over the United Kingdom and their overseas territories.
