Grading Saltstead’s performances in World Cup 87 qualifying
Our expectations for you were low, Mr Rosencrants. You know it and we know it. But so far, we have actually been doing okay in this qualifying cycle.
After a wretched campaign last cycle and an AOCAF where it looked like Saltstead were barely trying, our expectations for the qualifiers were simply to not embarrass ourselves again. But in spite of form going into this cycle, the Stallions were pegged as a possible dark horse (pun intended) contender for qualification, and Saltstead have justified that so far: Saltstead sit tied on points with New Lusitania at the halfway mark, with [REDACTED] and Jeruselem each four points behind.
Saltstead have won the games you would expect them to win and mostly been credible in the ones they lost. But exactly how good was each of the Stallions’ performances thus far. We at the Stable will provide completely arbitrary grades ranging from S (the best) to F (the worst), with A through D in between. Each grade is based on the result of the match, the strength of the opposition and expectations going into the match.
Melbergia 0–1 Saltstead: B
The hosts were doubtlessly hoping for an upset against the vulnerable Stallions to start the campaign, but Saltstead was simply not going to give Melbergia that pleasure. It took more than an hour for Mina Ratmaker to break the deadlock in Saltstead’s favour, but Saltstead got the job done. It was nothing particularly spectacular, but the win was exactly what the doctor ordered.
Oberour Ar Moro 4–1 Saltstead: F
This match is doubtlessly the low point of the qualifying campaign for Saltstead. While a defeat in the Parade Grounds was always to be expected, Oberour Ar Moro steamrolled through the Saltsteadish defence. Wim Amistad got a consolation goal at the end of the match, but the Stallions were left looking more like a group of amateurs than a proper national team.
Saltstead 2–0 [REDACTED]: S
The first game of the cycle at De Näsjonalpark, the ill-fated AOCAF selection got some small dose of redemption by beating a hapless [REDACTED] side in Ashwell. Edvard Rothås set the tone when he scored in the second minute of the match and Nico Swart’s brilliant 68th minute strike sealed the points for Saltstead. The affair simply wasn’t even close.
Banija 2–0 Saltstead: B
It was a valiant performance against the defending world champions and top team in the official world rankings in Istria, but it feels wrong to give a defeat a grade higher than a B. We would be dirty, rotten liars if we denied that the Kadongo Kamu were hands down the better team on the day, but it was a match were the Stallions displayed flashes of brilliance.
Saltstead 1–0 Thibaea: A
Thibaea had been on what is popularly called “a run” and Saltstead put an end to that business rather quickly. Thibaea were coming in with a weakened squad and the Stallions made them pay for it: Violeta Igesleven’s header gave Saltstead the lead going into halftime and, though Arthur Sidonie came close, Thibaea were unable to find an equaliser. Thibaea have collected just one point since leaving Ashwell.
Jeruselem 0–2 Saltstead: S
The single most indecent team in the group, Jeruselem was one of the teams the Stallions shortlisted for Saltstead’s dream qualifying group. The Stallions secured a two-goal lead going into the second half, meaning that Rosencrants was simply content to sit back, park the bus and run out of Jeruselem with all three points. Now we just wish we had some bleach for our eyes.
Saltstead 0–1 New Lusitania: B
While disappointing, the result against New Lusitania was nevertheless respectable and a reason for us to be optimistic that we could maybe accomplish a run to the qualifying playoffs. The match was a nail-biter, with André Silveira’s decisive goal only coming in the 85th minute. Either side could have realistically walked away the winners in this scrap and the return fixture in São Jorge do Mar will be just as hard-fought.
Stevidia 0–2 Saltstead: A
The Stallions were sitting six points behind New Lusitania as a result of the previous match and thus needed everything to go their way to claw back into contention. The Baptism of Fire eighth-finalists put up a good fight, but the Stallions were simply too good to be beaten in this match. One Reinhard Åubreħtssen goal either side of halftime was enough to secure all three point for Saltstead and move within three points of second.
Saltstead 1–0 Belac: C
Anything but a win would have been thoroughly unacceptable for the Stallions. While it is second only to a scoreless draw as the most Saltsteadish result possible, that Saltstead only won by a single goal against the last place team in the group is a disappointment for Rosencrants’s team. For a team that only got to the Baptism knockouts via the backdoor and lost their first eight qualifying matches, Belac put up an incredible performance in Ashwell.
