Italian Governing Coalition Collapses

Postby Shrillland » Fri Jan 15, 2021 2:10 am

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/clock-ticks-for-italy-s-conte-as-he-braces-for-senate-vote/ar-BB1cLPps?li=BBnbcA1

On Thursday, former PM Matteo Renzi's Italia Viva party deserted Giuseppe Conte's coalition government, led by M5S(Five Star Movement) and PD(Democrats), leaving him without a majority in Parliament. Renzi said that it was because Conte's government hasn't done enough to tackle Italy's problems caused by Covid. Without IV, Conte is now 12 votes short of a combined majority, and a confidence vote has been schedule for Monday in the Chamber and Tuesday in the Senate. Conte seems optimistic he can forge a new coalition by strengthening his Senate majority, but only time will tell.

So, NSG, what's your take? Mine is that the experts are right and that Conte will push the government to the right by bringing in Berlusconi's FI.

You're probably right about that, but I don't enough about this situation yet.

Conte's overtures to UDC have failed: https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/world/italy-s-conte-struggles-to-secure-support-in-senate-showdown/ar-BB1cPF7s?li=AAggFp4

And now the PD wants to reorganise the coalition as well. Renzi says he'll rejoin of concessions are made, but PD and M5S want nothing to do with Renzi after this. It's looking like Conte will end up leading a minority government.

Italian governments always collapse. Italy is known for being a country where things just don't work because there's too much chaos and disorganization mixed with corruption.

My hypothesis is after the Roman Empire fell, the blow to Italian pride was so demoralizing that the people of the peninsula stopped giving a shit and they haven't given a shit since, which is why covid aid took forever to reach the south, why Mussolini couldn't fight the war against Greece alone and why every Italian government collapses inevitably into infighting.

Italian isn't a race. And I was joking about the fall of the roman empire part.

Unfortunate, but not unexpected. Italy isn't known for long lasting or particularly stable coalitions, which made Conte's cool headed, technocratic approach all the more impressive from an outsider's perspective.

This'll probably result in a lurch to the right, dropping the PD and adding some right-wing parties. I only hope Berlusconi and Salvini don't get more influence.

I've said that about every form of government the country ever had, and lack thereof.

This is unfortunate. Granted I know little about Italian politics, but I know that Conte was doing a much better job than Matterella, and his handling of COVID-19 could’ve used some work but then again who’d ever have expected that the virus would somehow jump from China and Japan and Korea and Iran into Italy so quickly.

I hope that either Renzi rejoins, or maybe some of the smaller centre-left parties rejoin. Or maybe at least they give Confidence and Supply to Conte’s government. Let’s just hope that Forza Italia or Lega don’t somehow get a majority

Alas, a lot of experts are saying that the only way Conte can retake a majority before tomorrow's vote in the Chamber is some kind of agreement with FI.

What are the chances of Giuseppe Conte successfully convincing the President to declare a national state of emergency, prevent Parliament from convening, and rule by decree with virtually unchecked executive power for the next seven months ostensibly to battle the coronavirus pandemic while a draconian Sedition Act chills freedom of expression? In other words, what are the chances of him pulling a Mussolini-like stunt similar to what has happened in other so-called parliamentary democracies such as Hungary and Malaysia, also ostensibly to combat a pandemic?

I highly doubt this kind of authoritarian power grab in response to the loss of a parliamentary majority would ever occur. Italy's a republic and there is no monarchy to revere or unlawfully commit lese majeste against, and I'm pretty sure democratic institutions are considerably more robust there, albeit not as much as the United States.

Never liked Matteo Salvini one bit and I get the impression Italy is considerably more racist, xenophobic, and anti-LGBT than the UK although I could be wrong. Apart from that, I like many others know very little about Italian politics aside from brief, historical references going back thousands of years. There was also a great deal of sensationalist coverage over the murder of Meredith Kercher a few years back.
