On an unrelated note, I am finally giving in and purchasing something from Age of Sigmar for the first time. I was a bit too bitter to before now, since my largest army was Tomb Kings at 10,000 points and ~430 miniatures, and... well, I think that does not require further explanation. Last November however, I thought up an interesting army idea (during a conversation with C.L. Werner in fact), and I have decided to give it a try - just a small force of Idoneth Deepkin, but converted and painted with a theme inspired by the novel Shadow Over Innsmouth, with the intention of one day combining them with a force of Lovecraftian Lizardmen. I wanted to make them more fish-like, and only recently thought up a solution I am happy with - using Skink heads, of which I have just enough spare in my bitz box. It might take a little tweaking, but either way will certainly give them a more monstrous appearance.

Interesting idea, post pictures when you get around to painting them, would be cool to see

The link is not working for me, but either way I plan to stick to Games Workshop miniatures for now - it is only a small proof-of-concept force I am making to start with, a 'Start Collecting' box for the 'New Year, New Army' painting event. Thank you for trying to help, however - I do appreciate it.

Nevertopia wrote:can someone tl;dr the warhammer 40k lore for me?

Emperor of Mankind unifies Earth during the Unification wars of the 30th Millennium thousands of years after the Human Empire collapsed into anarchy and ruin, then launches a war of conquest across the galaxy called The Great Crusade aimed at unifying lost human worlds under his repressive Imperium of Man and to wipe out all hostile aliens and influences in the galaxy. To do this he created 20 Primarchs (basically demi-gods and his sons) to lead his armies of Space Marines (super soldiers) and regular human soldiers across the galaxy. Near the end of the Great Crusade, Horus (one of the primarchs and warmaster of the imperium: basically lead their armies) fell to the influence of the Chaos Gods, these malevolent god like entities that live in another realm of space called The Warp (Which people have to travel through in order to go around the galaxy) and led half of the Primarchs in rebellion against the Emperor in a civil war known as the Horus Heresy. The Heresy ends with Horus and a few of the primarchs dead but with the Emperor of Mankind mortally wounded and has to be interned on the Golden Throne on earth in order to survive his injuries.

This leads to the people of the Imperium worshipping the Emperor as a God, and the Imperium stagnates without the Emperors Influence and slowly decays over the next ten thousand years till we arrive in the 41st Millennium where the Imperium is fighting a losing war against the forces of the Chaos Gods (Armies of Demons, Chaos Space Marines and other soldiers) and a myriad of Alien races such as the Eldar (Basically xenophobic arrogant space elves), Necrons (Ancient highly advanced undeadish robots that are waking up again), Orks (Big Brutish Monsters that kill things for a living) Tyranids (Virtually limitless Hivemind of Alien insect monsters invading the galaxy to devour all life), Tau (Smaller more idealistic and naive race with advanced anime style mechs and weaponry trying to impose their ideology on the galaxy) and other races, who in turn are all trying to kill each other for their own reasons.

In short, everyone is trying to murder one another and its a really shit place to live in. The Emperor is a corpse god on a golden throne and the Imperium of man is a xenophobic repressive hell hole that is kind of a mix of Nazi Germany, the Medieval Catholic Church and Stalinist Russia on steroids in space with guns and giant ships.

Thats a bit of a long tldr but its the shortest i can make it to give you actual information about stuff in a limited way.

Lexicanum is a great wiki if you want to learn more, they have a ton of info on basically everything in the setting.

40k is basically LOTR in space except everything is on fire, the elves really don't want to sail to west, the orcs simply don't give a fuck about anything but fighting, the dwarves disappeared in mysterious circumstances and there are a few other races who simply want to kill or eat everybody.

Ultimately its the story of mankind at a turning point, they dominate the galaxy and will either save the universe or cause its utter destruction as the ultimate doom, chaos, is largely shaped by mankind and its most powerful actors are "human".

For a few reasons:

One, it's fucking gihugic and making it mobile would be inefficient and/or impossible.
Two, why would you want to make the brittle psychic corpse of your God Emperor mobile?
Three, it would kind of open a Hell portal on Terra if it was moved or Big E was moved.

Hey, I've been hearing and reading about Warhammer a lot lately, especially the 40K variety (presumably because everything is better IN SPACE!), and I'm wondering if I should get into the hobby, and the minipainting in particular is quite enjoyable to look at. From what I understand, the tabletop miniatures themselves are crazy expensive, as are the other materials involved (paints, gamebooks, etc). So, any advice before I commit to this? Haven't bought anything yet but I'm thinking about.

Find a buy/sell/trade group, there are plenty on Facebook. You'll be able to get the minis at a discount, though obviously not everything is available and you might not have all the bits and bobs.

Second you can use any paints/primers you want, you don't have to use games workshop stuff. You can find usable paints and primers at any hobby store. No one will notice the difference.

Don't throw away any bits and bobs you don't use. Either A re sell/trade them or B you will find you can combine them to make new minis. A great example of this is Astra Militarim heavy weapons, you can easily make 12 heavy weapons even though the kit is designed to give 3 heavy weapons.

Like all good drug dealers GW do offer discounted introductory sets, typically 3-4 minis 6 paints and a brush for about £20 but you can likely get those upto 20% cheaper in your local gaming/hobby store or online. You can also sometimes get a couple of minis for nothing and use the store paints to try painting them in some shops.

Of course you don't have to stick to gw stuff for either minis or paints if you want to just try the painting and modelling side, magazines like Wargaming monthly often have a free sprue of minis attached.

Another alt start would be one if the airfix starter sets. Yeah model planes and vehicles are a bit different to painting minis in some ways but the basics of putting together a kit and splashing paint on it are the same and would let you find out if you enjoy the processes .
