The story of the Galaxy is the story of Man

October 15th, 2230, Tartarus, Hades,

Xia hated the way Tartarus smelled. Maybe people who lived there didn't notice it or maybe it was just disguised by the garbage but there was one clear smell that filled Xia's nose, blood. Tartarus was nothing like her home and even as inland cities went it was unpleasant. Her arms curled against her chest as she walked through the streets and wrapped her cloak tighter around her, trying to not draw attention to herself. There were people on both sides of the streets. Some looked dangerous, others just sad. There were a number of hungry and sick looking people laying on the street, it was clear that they had nowhere else to go. Anger filled Xia's mind at the sight. With all the talk of the powers of genetics and cybernetics, the people here were as sick and impoverished as always. That would change, it had to.

She made her way down a side street until she reached a darkly lit nightclub. She slipped a code word to the bouncer who let her in without question as the sounds and music and smell of alcohol filled her senses. She walked inside passed the dancers of various races including Neriels like herself, who were often sought after and fetishized, until she reached a small set of stairs and headed down into the plain back room with concrete walls. Inside a stocky human in a sleazy leather jacket sat at a table, a cigar hanging from his lips. His right eye was replaced with cybernetics and was zooming across the room as if it was a spinning marble. He was not alone either, he was flanked by two armed guards, one human and one acux.

"Ah, there ya are luv, been enjoying the club have ya? Been waitin' on you."

"I'm here Jarric, let's get to business."

"Very well then, the men you asked for are ready, they're waiting for you to give the command. I also managed to get you this." He said before sliding a suitcase over to her for her to inspect. "No idea what you need it for, but not easy to find. Had to pull this one right out of the head of some hedge fund manager on Titan."

"That's none of your concern." Xia replied coldly before tapping the computer-like device she wore across her wrist as she transferred the man his funds. "We will contact you if we have more work." With that she prepared to leave until the man spoke up again.

"One more thing luv." He stood up, putting out his cigar against the table beneath him. "Heard a rumor about you lot I found mighty interesting. Heard you all were in a bit of a shootout recently. Nasty business that, lots of casualties. I got the feeling tho that you aren't keen on people finding out about it. Am I warm luv, or is that none of my concern too?"

Xia's facial expression hardened as she turned around, her hand rising into the air. The two guards raised their guns, ready to fire if necessary.

"Men like you think you're powerful because you can bully others. You think money, guns, and fancy enhancements make you strong." She raised her hand sharply and the two guns went flying against the wall before a shot could go off. Jarric nearly fell back against the table as he realized what he had stepped in.

"Look I was just messin..." But his sentence couldn't be finished as his head slammed against the table without Xia even touching him. She took a step closer so that she was standing right over him, ignoring his words entirely.

"You're wrong. Strength comes from inside you. It comes from how far you are willing to go to achieve your goals, to survive. Here, let me show you."

Two minutes later Xia exited the club, suitcase in hand and her cloak over her head as she left three corpses and blood stained walls behind her.

October 21st, 2230, New York City

"I'm telling you Ricardo, I don't like this."

UEG Navy General Elijah Hudson sat in his extravagantly large office at the Earth Command headquarters. His chair looked out into the sprawling landscape of New York City, hover cars flying through the air in organized lanes as they passed towering skyscrapers filled with restaurants and fancy night clubs. Outside his office he could hear the faint shouts of protestors. Agitators who were angry about the United Congress' failure to pass the latest Arctisite debt forgiveness bill. He downed the rest of his whiskey before sighing.

"There's no way in hell this works. Just look at this captain they picked, this "Regar Maxirian". He got some of the most elite troops in the Collective blown up. What the hell was command thinking letting those damn aliens choose the captain?"

"They said they provided the ship so they chose the captain." The man sitting across from him said, Ricardo Ruiz was United Earth Ambassador to the Collective.

General Hudson just scoffed at that. "Fuck that, they're lucky we're even working with them. I remember when they were trying to burn this city to ground."

"We have to put that aside. What's going on in the Abyss is dangerous. Someone needs to get a handle on it."

"So we trust these android loving collectivists over our own armed forces? If we're worried about the Abyss, the 5th Fleet is more than prepared to control it.

"Elijah, you know what's at stake here. You want your great grandchildren to be at war? We have a real chance at peace here."

Hudson scoffed at that, "Our hopes for peace are riding on a bunch of mercenaries and rejects? That makes me feel great. Anyway, lets talk about less depressing topics, did you see last night's episode of Simpsons Next Generation? That Noxial they have on the show sure is funny..."

October 22nd, 2230, Helix, Nebra System

Regar Maxirian stood on the deck of his currently empty ship. Although he found ship to be a generous word. It was a glorified trading vessel. That was of course unfair, on the outside the Oriasa looked humble and run down but its interior was state of the art. Its weapons, engines and shields were the best the Collective could provide. But Regar didn't care about any of that. He saw this assignment for what it was.

Exile.

His once promising career was reduced to ashes and he was left bitterly standing over the ashes. As he sulked and looked out the window at the small human city before him, a larger Elnoi man entered the ship. Unlike Regar who wore simplistic blue armor, the taller Elnoi wore robe-like clothing and a beret-like hat that were both decorated with medals.

"Regar, there you are. Everything’s coming along. Your crew have finished arriving and those that haven't moved in yet will do so soon. By tomorrow you will be off to Gaia for your first assignment."

Regar said nothing, and did not turn to face the other man. He was glowering and trying to contain his anger. The other man clearly noticed and placed his arm on the commander's shoulder.

"Relax my friend, this is an important opportunity for you."

Regar recoiled and withdrew his shoulder away. "Do not dress this up as a promotion, Hyak (General). Do not treat me as a Shiak (idiot) that cannot tell when he is being humiliated."

The General's face suddenly grew stern. "You forget your place, Commander. You are being offered a chance to redeem yourself. You would be wise to show gratitude."

"I did nothing wrong." Regar retorted definitely. "I couldn't have known."

"The fact that you are not even aware of your failure is proof you have failed! I have no interest in your excuses or tantrums. You will lead this crew or not even your natural talent will save you from a life in a labor colony. Have I made myself clear Commander?"

Regar stiffened but reluctantly placed his fist to his chest and bowed his head slightly, a sign of respect to a superior among the Elnoi. "Yes, Hyak Cezar."

General Cezar nodded as if he was satisfied before turning away. He took a few steps before pausing, "Try to use this as a learning experience. You're a good soldier, but without a team you are just another gun. Aga Te No'a(Alone we are nothing)"

Regar sighed and replied, "Ga-led Te Ro(Together We Rise)"

With that the Commander of the Oriasa was left alone again looking out into the human colony. It seemed like a peaceful place, a few people were walking along the streets with the occasional human pet he was unfamiliar with. Their lives looked simple but happy. They likely had no idea what was out there, the horrors that went on at the edges of the galaxy where no one bothered to look.

And here I am, their shepherd against the monsters that lurk in the dark. They won't thank me, they won't even know my name.

His crew would be arriving soon, in particular his so-called inner circle. They were the specialists that were hand selected to serve for this mission. He had looked them all over and they were an... interesting group. Regar understood the theme, they were expendable and talented, but replaceable. Regar hated to be a part of such a group but he had no choice. Resigned to his fate, the Elnoi Commander returned to his quarters and awaited the arrival of his crew.

October 22nd, 2230, The Oriasa

It might not have been impressive to others, but for Erina the Oriasa felt like home already. Sure the exterior was plain but even that was impressive. How the Elnoi engineers managed such a feat was nothing short of incredible. Erina carried her modest amount of luggage onto the ship as Roger followed behind her. She had done her best to train him to make his movements look mindless, but she was still nervous around professional military types. Erina had arrived on Helix two days ago and had been waiting eagerly to be allowed to board the ship. She made her way through the deck of the ship, marveling at the engineering as she headed down to the lower deck where she would set up shop. She had originally wanted to sleep in or near the engine room itself but she had been told by the Confederation that that would be unreasonable. She didn't understand why, it was the part of the ship she cared about the most.

"Erina, your heart rate appears elevated, are you feeling alright?" Roger asked her.

She chuckled at that question. "I'm fine Roger, just excited."

The young Sigal had lived a fairly sheltered life so far, her only taste of adventure being her journey to Earth to study there. She realized what she had thought about Earth and humanity wasn't all true. Her family taught her humans were chivalrous, kind and brilliant. All the films and stories she eagerly consumed reinforced this message. However she learned first hand that humans could also be cruel, selfish, and ignorant. Now she didn't know what was true, and she was determined to learn what the galaxy was really like.

For now she settled on exploring the engine room, and familiarizing herself with a place that would no doubt become a major part of her life.

October 24st, 2230, Gaia, The Oriasa

"This mission is simple. We're rendezvousing with the VIP and escorting them into Starlight's custody. We've done recon, this place is quiet. That doesn't mean slack off." Regar said in a commanding but calm voice as the crew's shuttle approached the surface of the planet. It was midday by the time they arrived on Gaia and they had spent about two days as a crew traveling. The town they arrived in was a trading hub for this modest farming colony. The type of place that was just big enough to be called a city, but mostly catered to rural types. Regar largely kept to himself during that time, waiting to arrive at their destination. However he spoke to the crew occasionally, specifically his human second-in-command Vincent. He didn't like having his crew chosen for him, but the former cop seemed alright as far as Regar was concerned. At the very least he was competent and that was key.

As they approached the ground however it became clearer that this simple mission was going to be far from simple. The small city beneath them seemed to be in peril. Sporadic gunshots were going off and smoke could be seen rising from a nearby building. Once Regar was alerted he scowled slightly, of course things couldn't have gone smoothly. He stepped forward towards the cockpit to get a view of the city and the situation became clear. They had landed a few hundred yards from the center of town where the police station where their target sat was. In their way however were dozens if not more monstrous creatures Regar had never seen before. He smirked, maybe this will be worth it after all. He pulled his assault rifle out of its holster and activated his drone which spun to life before he headed back to the main body of the shuttle.

"Situation has changed. Unknown hostiles are attacking. Our objective is the same. Fight smart, and don't get killed. Advance Team you're with me. Valstrad, Shuttle Team is yours. Defend this ship, don't let these freaks touch it.” With that the shuttle door opened, and revealed the situation to everyone. In front of them were a collection of spread out buildings, the largest of which was closest and also the one that was on fire. Past the burning building was the police station at the center of town as well as a collection of stores and restaurants. Scattered civilians and what seemed to be some kind of militia could be seen throughout, desperately trying to fend off their unknown attackers.

When the shuttle doors opened it became clear that the noise of the landing had caught the attention of a pack of the monsters which started running towards the shuttle followed by the sound of grating animalistic moans.

"Punch a way through! Leave the rest!" Regar yelled to the advance team as he started firing rounds into one of the creatures. It stumbled a bit as the bullets struck its strange flesh but was still in one piece.

"Damn it!" Regar cursed under his breath as he pulled out a different magazine with incendiary bullets and fired them off at the creature. This time it gave a deep howl as parts of its body seemed to melt away.

"They're weak to the elements!" Regar shouted to those behind him. However the flesh that he had destroyed was slowly starting to regenerate.

What the hell are these things?

Erina

Hearing they were facing enemies, Erina gripped the pistol on her hip tightly. She had been hoping that she wouldn't have to use it but that seemed very unlikely at this point. She was part of the shuttle squad and stepped towards the opening of the shuttle bay doors as she awaited orders from their second in command. However her attention was soon drawn to screams that seemed to be coming from the nearby burning building. Fear swelled in Erina's mind. Fire was pretty much her worst enemy. The environment suit she was wearing would protect her, but not forever. Plus their orders were to guard the ship, not go running off.

But people were in danger, she couldn't just ignore that right? She took out her pistol and aimed it at the nearby monsters, working up the courage to fire as she thought about her moral predicament.

October 24th - Gaia, Nebra System
Vincent Valstrad & Monica Lantrix

"Roger, Captain." Vincent Valstrad promptly replied to his commanding officer. In the past, he had been a soldier and it showed - in his tone, his posture, and perhaps more importantly, his respect for the chain of command. Twenty-four years had passed since he marched into hell on that volcanic world, and nineteen since he had set down his weapons and headed back home, but some things weren't easily forgotten. Turning back towards the team left behind with him to defend the shuttle, he looked at each one of them. It was a strange crew, the one that he had been recruited into. Outlaws, mercenaries, tradesmen. Odds and ends put together into a neat little unit called Black Star that in truth seemed like chaos waiting to be unleashed. Still, few were willing to take the job, and they were all experts in their areas, which he hoped would offset their disparate nature.

Whatever the case, now was not the time to muse about the crew. Now was the time for action. After only a moment, he spoke up. "You heard him, ladies and gentlemen. Our orders are to protect the shuttle. Form a perimeter and don't let any of the damned things get through - we'll need to take off and try to clear the area from the air if we risk being overrun by these creatures, but until that becomes absolutely necessary, we stay on the ground. Understood?"

His tone was calm and measured - something like this was nothing compared to what he had been through in Solano - but it was enough to communicate the urgency of the situation. He didn't wait to hear confirmation, expecting the men assigned to the shuttle to take the cue and begin shooting the fleshy monstrosities that encroached upon the vessel. He himself didn't dally in getting the job done and pulled out one of his ArcTech pistols. "Monica, you're with me. If any one of these thing gets too close to the ramp, cut them down." He said as he loaded a magazine of explosive bullets onto the pistol and took aim at one of the flesh monsters, his movements measured and precise. A pull of the trigger, and the creature's chest exploded, leaving a gaping hole in it with the edges melting into a sickly crimson liquid.

However, despite this grievous damage, it continued shambling towards the shuttle.

"What the hell..."

"You want something to stop moving, you cut off its legs old man." Monica spoke as she stepped forward, calmly walking down the boarding ramp. Six pristine scabbards hung from the former assassin's waist, but for the time being, she only drew one of the swords before approaching the wounded abomination. Faster than the eye could track, her hand swiftly manipulated the katana, performing three cuts that severed the creature's arms, head and legs, respectively. They continued to writhe on the ground while its body tried to regenerate the damage done, but now that they were separate there was little that its body parts could do separately. With a flick of the wrist, Monica cast off the disgusting fluids that remained on her sword.

"Show off." The former detective chastised her, though a smirk could be seen on his face. "Just don't let them get close."

"You worry about your performance and I'll worry about mine." She replied before running towards her next target.

Vincent, however, did not fire again. Blowing off their limbs to the point they couldn't move would take far too much ammunition. This time, instead of aiming for the center of mass, he lined up a headshot. The second the bullet penetrated the fleshy bulb that was the monster's head, it exploded into a shower of alien blood and lumps of flesh. This time, the body continued writhing for a moment before simply falling over.

Bingo.

“Well...scheiße.” Dr. Benedikte Schrödinger, the Oriasa’s bomb expert came up from where she had been working when she heard the commotion, and Captain Regar gruffly barking orders to protect the ship and cargo. “Ve’re not in zis place five minutes und already zings try to kill us.” Unclipping the pistol from her hip, she fired three rounds in the monsters nearest to her, her short blonde hair ruffled by both the wind and lack of sleep.

She had a bandolier of small bombs fitted across her chest, mostly small chemical or smoke bombs that could be handy as defense weapons or crowd control to keep the enemy from piling on top of you too quickly. Radioactive material was precious and hard to come by so that was usually saved for the ship’s arsenal. She’d love to end this with a bomb or two right now, but she decided against it due to the tight quarters and remembering the hell she’d caught from her old college professor after the last time she tried to throw a bomb in the middle of a group of enemies. They were simulated enemies at the time, but the principle was the same.we didn’t want a repeat of the Laboratory Incident.
To be honest, she never thought she’d end up in a place like this...on a starship amongst a ragtag crew going to God knew where. She’d never even left her planet, or even Germany let alone her entire fucking star system. But as far as the United Earth Government was concerned, the further away she was the better. Ben could feel the knot coiling in her stomach as she recalled the events that landed her here, nobody was supposed to die. Nobody was even supposed to get hurt, she’d just wanted to conduct an experiment! How did things go so fantastically wrong?! A groan and a growl snapped her green eyes back to attention as she fired another round from her revolver, hearing a click somewhere up above. Looking up, she could tell it was Erina...the brilliant Segal engineer and an acquaintance from school. She looked like she was debating about whether to fire or not.

“Oi.” Ben called to her. “Zink about it like zis, if you have to choose between you and them, pick yourself. You’re no good to yourself or anyvone if you’re dead.” Wait a minute...

Acid bombs! She’d been working on handheld bombs that exploded acid instead of fire, she had a few on her right now! And the damage could be way more controlled than if it was a fiery or smoky explosion...they could probably be useful right now. But zey are untested...hell, better to test on flesh monsters than an actual human, right?

Howie Bronte

He hadn't loved any part of his new employment. He didn't love the very concept, the fact that they hadn't bothered to take the bomb out of his neck, he didn't love the idea of playing soldier boy, he didn't love the crew, he didn't love the ship, he didn't love the mission. But not once did Howie Bronte complain. Howie Bronte was not a complaining man, after all, he was a respectable one, and so he kept his mouth shut, and he made nice, and he even grew to like some of the crew, in the very, very short time he had known them. They weren't a bunch of military hardasses, and some seemed even frighteningly human. Well, "human".

There was one part of the job he loved, though. The part where he put down the things trying to put him down, or died trying. So far, he was firmly in the first camp, and he had no intention of joining the second as he moved up with their captain, Regar. Howie didn't seem fazed that the rifle-like attachment would be useless, or at least not useful enough. He simply slid it off the rail on his forearm, clipping it to his belt before sliding something very similar to an underbarrel shotgun to the same rail. He pulled a magazine off the left side of his belt, slamming it into place, the whole procedure taking mere seconds before he was ready.

He slipped ahead of his compatriots, moving in close. The lady with the swords had the right idea, going for the legs, but he had an entirely different idea he hoped would prove equally right. He activated his computer, his right eye glowing yellow as his arm flew up with a frightening speed, the shotgun on his arm sounding a deafening report as it blew off the head of the creature. That was the trick, he'd found, with regenerators. Aim for the head. Of course, it'd be foolish to leave it at that, and so he grabbed the headless creature with his left hand, electricity surging out, enough to kill a man coursing through the thing. As it fell to the ground, Howie blasted one more shot into the area just below it's neck, for good measure.

His quarry down, he turned to the rest of his newfound crew. Scary looking bunch, for certain, but still as scarecrows at the moment. Certainly this wasn't the best that the best in the galaxy could do.

"Let's fucking go, people!", he said, not as a command but an encouragement. His voice was filled with something like exhilaration as he scanned around for his next target, shell racked and taser still crackling.

October 23rd - Gaia, Nebra System

Karu

The bridge of the ship was quiet. It was bathed in the soft glow of electronics and the main lighting being down to almost nothing.

On the navigation screen the hyperspectral plot of z space seemed to flux and flow. Spots of cohesion within the swirls of energy and existence could be seen. The very interspace between alternative universes and realities colliding, where...with the right course...one could step across the boundaries of space time itself.

This was typically the realm of specialized navigation computers and specialists studying historical plots to lay courses from one star to another. But the Oriasa was slipping in z-space not on a pre-programmed course, but natively reacting to the changes as universes shifted and changed. The navigation computer did it's best to keep up with relaying data from the ship's sensors to the mind controlling it, if it hadn't been built for a battlecruiser it wouldn't have been able to keep up... Then relying those instructions back to the quad set of Q star planes controlling its movement through z-space, manipulating voltages and currents to shift within the realm of sub-particals and exotic matter.

A lucky cat clock suddenly buzzes somewhere in the crew quarters. A pair of electric blue eyes open and stare up at the numbers on the little device stuck to the side of bulkhead, the little arm shining back and fourth. The reddish tail of fur reaches out from beneath blankets and slaps the rapidly moving arm...silencing the device.

Karu emerges from her nest, dressed in little more than what human females would call a sports bra and pajamas. She stretches her long, feline body and then contorts a few more times, into various shapes. She yawns and pulls the small stuffed animal from among the sheets. She looks down at the stained little cat, based on an Earth snow leopard. The blue eyes stare at it for a moment. She pulls it to her face and nuzzles it. "Another day huh? What's the point Mr. Nibbs?" She rocks back and forth with Mr. Nibbs in her arms...her eyes focused in the distant past.

There is a series of beeps from a small basket in the corner. Karu looks over and rolls her eyes..."No Ubo...your wrong on that..." What rises from the basket looks like four black orbs half subsumed by an even larger black orb. It just hovers, using its repulsers to maneuver after its mistress like some sort of puppy.

Karu places the toy on the shelf over her bed before padding out into the corridor. A few moments later she is in the darkness of the bridge. She walks over to a small locker the words 'fire exstinquiser' in two lanquages labeled across it. She opens it to pull out a paper bag and a large bottle of water. She wanders over to the pilot console and slumps down in it...

Ubo drops onto another console...buzzing and chirping for a moment.

She watches the navigation screens for a moment...but in reality she is communicating to the navigation computers and the vast amount of data recorded in their memory for the last ten hours.

She leans over and smacks a button on the console..."Captain...This is Karu on the Bridge...We're comping out of z-space in T minus Sol 30 minutes and be entering Gaia polar orbit in T 129 minutes; just as estimated..." She says this quietly, almost with no emotion.

Then she shakes herself closes her eyes and opens them again. "And it is good morning too sir, because you owe me a bottle of Blue Natha, bah 20 hours to get to Gaia orbit..." her voice chipper and full of joy.

She leans back smirking pulling a strip of jerky out of the bag and chomping down on it. "I hope we have chicken and waffles again!" she states with a bubbly attitude...looking up as though talking to the ship...or maybe the ship's AI, who she just acts as another crewman...although one she is inside of...

Ubo makes a sound...Karu looks over the blue of her eyes turning dark "No Ubo...No..." Then she smiles again and jumps up to start her morning routine. First up, stretching and martial arts exercises right there on the bridge; ignoring the changes in lighting as the main lights start to come up. She keeps an eye out for the next watch to finally arrive and technically relieve her so she can see if there is chicken...with waffles...

October 24th - Gaia, Nebra System

Karu

Karu had seemed to most of the crew to be napping. Eyes closed, tail just sort of wagging like a metronome as the shuttle came down into the atmosphere.

Anyone on the stick would have noticed the sudden odd adjustments to the landing site location, or the sudden marking of other landing sites on the holo-map. Some of those making no immediate sense at all.

As the shuttle touched the local sand, Karu’s eyes popped open. “Alright…I think that the scans show where you may need to pop in to pop us out…but I’m not perfect, perfect…so run some more scans of the landing sites from orbit…I’m did a lot of that on memory…and time changes things…”

She then slams the release on her harness. Allowing her to bounce out of the co-pilot seat even though she is dressed in her armored space suit.

She looks over at Amanda…”Hey, Am…so on the holo map. Like I just said , I have notated the other landing spots I know people have used in the past…don’t worry about some of them being on top of buildings…there are a few…ah reinforced roofs about…or that silly roof there…its a joke…I think…yeah…maybe avoid landing spot U-One unless we really need it…cause…its been awhile. I couldn't recall if you'd said you been here or not, but just add the spots you know of..."

Karu continues to move and then turns again, "Hey, and if you haven't I know you've been to Kessel…what pirate hasn’t been to see the Big Green…eh…just treat it the same…keep your ears and eyes open…”

She then bounds down the corridor into the main compartment and looks out the gangway door at the chaos.

“I hate damn opposed landings…just too much bang…bang…bang…Then when you shoot the wrong people they become so much harder to bargain with…”

Karu slams open a small locker panel on the shuttle and pulls out a bandolier of small plasma grenades…and a short range rapid blaster.

The Calypso N-33 that she grabs out of the locker is an oddity in energy weapons. Though relatively low yelidn in terms of individual pulse damage, it does have a massively higher pulse rate than typically similar weapons with three separate lasing chambers rotating in and out of service as they recharge, allowing for an overall higher rate of fire.

Karu also pulls several extra power clips and places them into a pocket of her armored space suit.

As Karu loads gear, M-55 sneaks out the gangway and goes high and towards the port side.

Karu turns back and shouts to the remaining flight crew…”I know you’ve got this but if you need some advice just channel it to Ubo and he’ll relay it to me…Okay…bye…” She waves as starts down the gangway.

Karu bounds down the gangway as though on a school field trip, or a shopping mission, and not an opposed landing. She watches Vince’s hit and then Monica’s sword play to bring down the first monster.

“Hey M, nice…10 out of 10 awsome sauce…”

As she passes buy, she watches Ben fires three rounds and then start to think about something better…

Karu just shakes her head...because the Doc needed to learn to think and act...stopping and standing around got you dead...

Then as she moves towards the Captain she watches Howie blow of a head with a shot gun blast…”Howie for the old school decap!…looks like a solid hit too, yea!…though let me show you how to really decap a fleshy fiend….”

Karu yells at a monster “Hey flesh face…I have a treat for ya!”

Karu tosses a plasma grenade into the open mouth of a creature...but the grenade slaps it right in the middle of the face...creating a short lived bulbous nose...but the grenade still detonates. But this time, part of the creatures head remains and it doesn’t fall…instead it becomes a rudderless hulk, moving about in an expanding spiral to interfere in the movement of other monsters…

Karu sniffs at the results and then mentally sends a message through M-55.

Folks…can you give the captain some good old turret fire on the market targets? Pretty please with Finabin on top?

Target indicators appear on the turret control screens and memory banks indicating precise locations to provide support fire. Most of these are located precisely on the necks of the creatures now approaching the captain from the port side. C

Karu catches up with the Captain. “Hey so you forgot to tell your guide where we are going to get this Very Important Person,” she says with semi-mock gravity…

“I mean is it Blackies, Joan of Arcs, the Three Goat Inn? How am I supposed to help get you in to said location if if I don’t know where I am supposed to get to...if I don’t know where it is…is?”

Ija

Low orbit was a sort of meditation. Forty minutes in darkness, thinking hard, letting the radiators do their work — then forty minutes in sunlight, tilting everything to the side, living through the efficiency dip and taking things a little slower. Not unlike a breathing exercise, or the sorts of pomodoro cycles that some humans used to time their bursts of effort.

Radio communication was a sort of game. The field changed rapidly, magnetic lines pulsing and snapping here and there, and the objective was to aim and fire a little waveform all the way around, reverberating it off the ionosphere and the ground until it struck the receiver. It took planning, practice, and enough mathematics to keep engineers busy for years — but in the end it was no different from, say, shooting an arrow at a bullseye.

Ija's language model was always humming away like this, finding connections and challenging itself to describe things in new ways, even if she wasn't speaking to anyone at the moment. A good model needed quadrillions of parameters, after all, and they weren't going to compute themselves. As the sun rose in orbit and the Oriasa started its cooling cycle, she was hard at work checking comm integrity with the ground and making sure she could get a clear signal through. And as her core memory solved differential equations by the thousands and her peripherals reached out and tweaked all the ship's systems one by one to get more efficiency out of them, Ija felt like she was almost having fun. Sure, the naysayers would say it wasn't a "real feeling", just a conclusion her language model arrived at and could parrot out if she chose, but what was the difference between a good enough model and a person? Ija certainly couldn't tell.

At last, the time came to fire up the antenna. With the city appearing on Gaia's horizon just now, she would only have a few minutes to get detailed maps before the ship passed over and it receded across the other horizon. But a few minutes was plenty long enough. The conversation on the ground was muddled, but she recognized a few main concepts: mass combat against mobile enemies, with one group on the shuttle and one group moving to a pre-marked destination.

Her core memory fed her language model the parameters of what it was trying to convey. The model chugged at it for just a moment and then spat out a few sentences, handing them off to its adversarial network, which gave the computational equivalent of a noncommittal shrug.

Perfect.

The team's radio network — at least, the portion of the team who had given themselves earpieces or the like, if that was less than everyone — was greeted by a ping from the Oriasa and a high female voice cheerily announcing itself as if the people on the ground weren't currently fighting for their lives.

"This is Ija, reporting from orbit! I'm training the Oriasa's cameras on your location. I'll give you all some instructions in a moment."

Scarcely two seconds passed before she followed it up, having pinpointed the town with the Oriasa's cameras and focusing on the moving specks around the shuttle. She couldn't exactly see what in particular was moving around, but weaponsfire and masses of roaming creatures were just as easy to spot with advanced cameras from space as houses and streets.

"Advisory one! I'd keep the rescue team out of the main road, since they're drawing a lot of attention. It's not good if they're getting attacked on all sides."

Arrival to the Oriasa

Illvara stepped onto the vessel, arms behind her back, as she shot a look around at the rest of the crew. The crew was predominantly human. Even excluding herself. Though there were plenty of non-humans. Some looked equipped for combat, but most were doctors, technicians, engineers and all the other people required for keeping a ship in good working order. It appeared as if introductions were in progress, so when there was a break in conversation, she decided that it was her turn to speak up. "Hello. My name is Illvara Bray. Occasionally known as the Crowned Tempest. I was hired by the higher ups of this operation to provide security for this crew, a job I intend to fulfill with utmost efficacy." She spoke in a tone that would be considered unusually amicable.

"I'm sure more than a few of you know of my exploits on Apex. Rest assured, I am that woman no longer. Unless I have to be." She spoke. There looked to be a few troublemakers on board, though it seemed at least most of them were ex-troublemakers, so she couldn't judge too much as she easily fit the profile for one. Even if what she did was technically legal. "I look forward to working with all of you. Perhaps there is more we can learn from each other than we all think."

October 24st, Touchdown to Gaia

The mission sounded simple on the surface. Meet with a VIP and escort him off world. However, as with almost everything in life, it could never be that simple. While Regar tried his best to sound like a military commander, Illvara knew that most everyone here was hardly a fighter, and those that were either were mercenaries or prize fighters like herself. Simple instructions would probably work best, but she understood that he was the primary authority figure and had to keep everyone under control.

Upon actually landing, the chaos could easily be seen. The area was besieged by some strange creatures and Regar was barking orders about the two teams, one to go forward and ensure the safety of the hostage, the other to stay back and make sure that the monsters didn't get to the ship.

The crew, in a display fitting of a group of people who barely knew each other, split up, most of them charging straight towards where the VIP was supposedly holed up. Though she could understand that finding glory by killing some strange creatures was appealing, that defending that ship was probably a bit smarter. After all, if they lost it, they were stranded, which would present a far worse scenario for everyone involved. So she opted to stay with the ship, which thankfully, had Monica and Vincent there as well while Regar shouted something about them being more vulnerable to energy weapons than kinetic.

While Monica and Vincent had one area covered, though they seemed to be talking about Monica's less efficient tactics. Not something that concerned her, so she drew Arcbreaker and headed opposite of the pair, making sure their flanks were covered. It didn't take long to spy a couple of the shambling monsters to find her and make their way towards her.

Lightning surged in her left hand as her shotgun whirred to life. Channeling her lightning into the weapon, it focused it into a powerful electrical blast that splattered the two creatures. At first it looked as if both of them were dead, however, the combined biomass merged into one, creating a somewhat larger creature.

A second electrical blast obliterated it's torso, finally killing it. "Disgusting, but at the same time, fascinating."

She called over to Vince and Monica, "Do you think we should collect a sample for the scientists?"

October 22nd, 2230: Kennedy, The Oriasa
Kennedy has come alone, no tearful goodbyes, no family to see him off, and no odes to a hero. While it may have been what he knew would happen, and, indeed, happened with every other occupant of the ship, it still caused him a bit of sadness. Here he was, stepping into the start of the adventure he has always dreamed of, and it still felt dreary. His nerves were no help either, as with all of his intellect, knowledge, and willingness to persevere, he still somehow felt lacking. Truly, many on board were soldiers, and even those that weren't seemed more experienced than he. Still, he would not let himself falter before his first step. With a deep breathe, be put on a smile and boarded the Oriasa. His old, boring life was not left behind in the wind, and his new life would take him among the stars, to the abyss and through it, and perhaps to places that no one has ever seen. Yes, truly, as the nerves from before evaporated he found that he was in a place that he was meant to be. He was home.

December 14th, 2213: Nix
Happy Birthday

"Status report, Fourteenth of December, year two thousand, two hundred and fifteen of the Earth calendar. Time: 7:36 of the Xenro cycle. Subject Age, twelve. Lungs, functional. Brain, functional. Heart, functional. Lymph nodes, functional. All cybers, functional. No repairs needed, all vital signs and muscles active. Slight atrophy. Please utilize a physical therapy regime. Please denote a title."

The first memories of a new life came from a soft, robotic voice, almost male in pitch. Light entered new eyes as the eyelids slowly opened. The little girl who's name is lost to time opened her eyes for the first time, a medical and technological miracle. Her first sight was of a sterile, chrome room, with two Elnoi talking above her.

"You need to be patient. From what I can tell, the operation and installments went perfectly. Once she awakes, you may speak with her. You just need to wait. "

" Yes, I understand. But still, I... "

" I know. You fought hard to bring her here, and you have waited for days. If you could just wait a little while longer, all of your worries should subside. "

".... Yes. I understand. " The Elnoi, who has been pushing back and forth nervously, turned to the girl. His eyes grew wide when he saw her own, metallic blue in color, peering back at him with a mix of confusion and curiousity.

"Well I'll be, you didn't have to wait long at all."

"I suppose not. Hello young one." Taren extended his hand, grasping the still biological palm if the young girl. "My name is Taren. I'll be taking you in. May I call you Nix?"

The young girl tried pulling back, fear overtaking her. She didn't know where she was, but she had to get out, quickly. However, as she slid off of the surface she had found herself on, she found her legs were much weaker than she could ever recall, and she quickly fell to the ground. The voice from before chimed off again, seemingly from within her ear.

"Muscular atrophy in legs. Please do not attempt rigorous activity until proper therapy is done. Please denote title."

Nix reached up to her ear, as she struggled to form words. The cyber voice-box turned on for the first time, letting out a small, childish voice mixed with a small metallic ring to it. "V-voice". Her first word of her new life, brought on as a question but mistaken as an answer.

"Title received. I will accept the name Voice. Good morning, Nix. Happy Birthday."

October 24th, Gaia

" Vitals all in functional order. Cybers all in peak condition. Good morning, Nix. "

The now adult woman opened her eyes, brushed her hair out of her eyes, and slowly rose from the bed with a yawn. Nix let out a long stretch, racked her neck, followed by her right elbow, moving her left, cybernetic arm in tandem, which replicated the satisfying sound. After the stretch, she went to her room's WC, with a mist quickly cleaning her in totalility.

"Good morning Voice. I think I'll wear turquoise today." The cybernetic lights that outlined some of her features turned a deep blue as she found a few pieces to match. She moved in front of a large mirror, trying to decide between them before eventually going with a simple black and deep blue jump suit. For a moment she considered putting her hair into a ponytail, but decided, for the hundredth day in a row, that she preferred it down.

As Nix left the room, she was suddenly made to jump back as a younger boy, a Promethean named Kennedy, raced past. "'Scuse me, sorry, coming through!" Kennedy raced passed room after room, quickly reaching the bridge and finding the rapidly approaching planet Gaia. However, his excitement soon turned as their very first mission ever hit a small snag upon landing.

"What are those things?!" Kennedy quickly went through his resources, finding nothing even after a picture search.

"What they are doesn't matter." A metallic women's voice popped up beside him, with Nix staring off as her flying armor formed upon her from a piece of her suit. In her hands were two rather large plasma rifles, normally meant to tear through a military vehicle's armor. "All we need to know is that they are here to die, and that I am happy to oblige their request. Now make yourself useful and help your human bomber friend."

Kennedy shivered in slight fear as she left, but quickly recovered. He probably should help Ben, she would have a way to support the Advance team from the ship itself. I'm the way, he recorded every bit of information that he could of these creatures. Their looks, anatomy, regenerative capabilities, and their weakness to heat and potentially other elements. Perhaps he could find something more later, but for now he had to make sure he collected all the data he knew.

"Ah, Ben! There you are. Need any assistance? Regar said we should defend the ship, but I'm not sure my gun will handle any of these." He took a shot from a safe distance and found this theory to be true. " Perhaps my drone could deliver bombs to the advance team?"

With the Advance team, Nix arrived in high above them and quickly dispersed of a few of the creatures that were getting a little ti close for others. Her enhanced eardrums picked up and pinpointed the screens of the nearby burning building, and she quickly came to a conclusion.

"Captain Regar, it appears that there are civilians nearby. I will continue to give sure support, but shall I attempt a rescue mission? It is of my calculations that my maneuverability will be the best way to save as many survivors as possible. "

Mission at Gaia
Regar

"Just follow me, I know where we're going!" Regar barked to Karu as he dogged the spear like limb of one of the fleshy creatures in front of them. Luckily these things were far from nimble and so avoiding the strikes of one of them wasn't too difficult. Five of the creatures would be a very different story however. He then heard Ija speaking into his communicator warning them to avoid the main roads as they approached the heart of town.

"Copy, advance team sharp left," He said pointing over to a nearby building that looked like a hospital. Regar continued to cut through a handful of their mysterious enemies as they pushed towards the hospital as he heard Nix's request. "No android you stay with me. Odds are we are going to need to make a run for it at some point." He told her as he, Howie, Nix, Karu and the others that were assigned to the advance team entered the hospital to find it inhabited by some locals who were injured or seeking refuge. They passed a man on a stretcher, screaming as blood squirted from where his arm had once been. Regar wasn't expecting this middle of nowhere planet to suddenly become a battlefield.

As they walked through the halls they were approached by one of the few people who seemed to be running around and helping people.

"I don't know who you are, but I hope you're here to help." She was a Promethean with pale blue skin and a head that was shaved except for a neat flow of hair across the center of her scalp.

"Sorry lady, we're not the cavalry. We're here for someone. They're some kind of geneticist named Jasper. You seen them?"

She simply sighed and nodded, "He's at the police station, holed up with some mercenary types like you lot. I suggest you be careful though, there's a lot of those... things in the center of town."

Regar nodded in return. "We'll sure to watch our asses." He then turned to Howie and Karu, "You two are taking point, clear us a path to that police station." He then turned to Nix, "When we get there, you're going to take the VIP and fly him out. These things don't seem to have range attacks so you should be in the clear. Alright, time to move." With that Regar led them toward the exit of the hospital. Outside the building the hospital was about two blocks away from the police station. The streets were mostly cleared except for about a half dozen of the creatures that were roaming the street. Another half a dozen were surrounding the front door of the police station. Luckily it wasn't the only way into the building. There was a roof entrance and a back entrance at the far end of the building. He turned to Karu.

"Well 'navigator' how do you suggest we proceed?" He asked a bit sarcastically, looking around at the others for answers as well.

Erina

Erina heard Ben's thoughts and maybe that was right. Maybe she should just stick to the mission and not try to cause any trouble. But hearing those screams... How can I live with myself if I just ignore them. Suddenly she was running before she even finished thinking it over. "Come on! We have to help them!" She shouted to the others at the drop shift, heading towards the burning building and the hulking monsters that stood between them.

Howie Bronte

The fight continued, even out right from the hospital doors. Just as he expected. Howie gave a simple nod, eye glowing once again as his implant activated. He stepped out of the door, gun already held up.

"Come on, kitty cat, we got a brawl and a fuckin' half right here!"

His shotgun lit up the nearest one; it barked 5 times, blowing the thing to bits. The magazine ejected, popping out as he slammed a new one into place, though he didn't bother on the next one. He'd let it get too close, but now it was in for a heluva shock. He deployed his wrist blade, near 8 inches long, thrusting it into the things chest. Grasping it, he activated his onboard taser, loading the thing up with electricity. It fell to the ground, fried, as Howie kept the shock flowing for a good second, just to be sure.

These theatrics had distracted him, though, and one of the creatures grabbed him by the neck. He whipped around, kicking the thing clear of him with a surprised yelp. The noise his foot made as it sunk into the things flesh made him glad he didn’t have nerve endings in his legs anymore, and with that unsettling thought he leapt forward, clearing the distance between him and the abomination of flesh in a single stride. He thrust his shotgun into the prone form’s head, letting off another shot. Quickly he went to work separating the things limbs from its torso with the blade built into his wrist, and with his dirty deed done he stood up straight, letting out an animalistic whoop. He was having a good time, maybe a little too good of a time.

Karu nods and then says..."Indirect route to the roof or the back door seems best to me...and the best indirect route is through Blackies..." She points at a bar two doors down from the police station "...and its warehouse then through the barbershop's back yard. Not the first time I've had to break into a jail...though never to get pass a bunch of flesh mound things..."

Karu watches Howie rush out and start attacking..."There goes Howie...I need to go help Howie, I'll be at Blackies while you finish this debate...pick me up on the way..."

She bounces out but more cautiously than Howie... While he seems to attack three of the creatures, Karu seems to first just try to move around them deftly and not be noticed.

One does seem to finally lock onto her...she stops...suddenly turns direction running back towards Howie one moment to get it chasing her at full run. Then she side flips over and around, dropping into a motionless crouch as it try to stop and slides past her on the dirt loosing balance as it twists to do so...

Karu opens fire with rapid energy bursts focusing on the creatures eyes at it tries to finalize its stop and turn back towards her. Individually the energy blasts each don't do too much damage but the concentration, and repeated accurate hits finally cause the head itself to blow open; caused by all of the applied energy overwhelming the molecular structure...Instead of finishing its turn and starting to move in her direction, momentum and gravity cause it to drop to the ground, rudderless and trying to still move forward into the earth itself...

Another two have locked on to Karu because of this and she smiles brightly at it before running away from them to a low dilapidated building with a long porch covered in junk of various kinds... She stops and hunkers at the edge of the porch down for a moment, firing short bursts at both creatures. They shamble towards her and the corner of the porch.

When the creatures reach the corner they seem to be confused and stand there for a moment poking at porch, looking for the now missing Karu.
Their confusion lasts a moment too long actually.

A plasma blast vaporizes one end of the porch and throws piles of old rusted junk through the creatures bodies. One is immediately decapidated while also loosing an arm...causing it to slowly drop to the ground.
The second survives for a few moments sans both an arm and a leg. It tries to waddle around before finally collapsing on the ground.

Out of spite or stupidity or both...it tries to push itself across the ground towards where Howie is carving up his third creature...but doing so the iron and steel imbedded into the flesh gouge into the ground and lock it into place...leaving it scratching and clawing like some lost animatronic from a theme park ride.

By this time everyone notices that Karu is standing in the doorway of a bar two doors down from the police station on the other side of the street. The sign in the barred window next to her blinks "Blackies"

Her position is a location where she can watch the team, but the monsters in front of the station can not see her.

Karu continues to wait, leaning on the doorway...letting the others choose whatever path it is they want to take. She just waves and smiles like a happy Acrux.

Amanda Rollins-Mission at Gaia

The descent in the shuttle to Gaia went well enough but as we touched down we quickly realized that nothing is ever simple. "Fuck you Murphy." I said to no one in particular, cursing Murphy's Law under my own breath as I did my best to focus on the job of landing everyone safely through a hangover and a Acrux with a case of ADHD. Of course situations like this are by no means new to me, although the scale of this is a bit larger. But landing at a hostile spaceport with guns firing off as armed men and women charged off? This is more Tuesday for me than a emergency, working in my trades in Abyss will do that to you. Karu however seemed extremely eager to go join the fun, as she scurried back to grab some gear and weapons before purring out some alternate landing pads before she left. I did not answer her verbally but mentally scoffed. It's not as if I did not have to study the damned things last night before the mission. I gave a soft sigh, she means well. I'll try to be easier on her going forward. I just don't need to get too close. After all, everyone is here for something and I am in this for the money.

My eyes scanned over our various systems as I listened to the sounds of battle in the background. It would make most pilots uneasy hearing gunfire going off so close to the shuttle, but these creatures seemed to have no means of attack other than melee which makes them little threat to the hull of the ship and relatively easy for the crew to keep away. So I wasted few thoughts on wondering if they would get aboard and kept my eyes on my own work. I activated the turret and set it to auto fire to assist the shuttle crew in securing the landing pad.

I then turned my attention to a combination of audio reports from around the city as my eyes scanned the maps as I made mental notes of where other potential landing zones could be in case we needed them.

October 24th - Gaia, Nebra System
Vincent Valstrad & Monica Lantrix

Keeping his cool in a tense situation like this, Vincent lined up another headshot and fired at an approaching creature, the bullet hitting it squarely in the center of the head. Just like the others, it turned into a gory mist seconds afterwards, the explosive charge within the bullet doing its work. The creature fell to the ground, immobile, as others from the pack shambled forward to take its place in a seemingly endless wave of fleshy zombies.

Three down... infinity to go. Black Star's second in command thought with sobriety. I like our odds.

Suddenly, his communicator flared to life and Illvara's voice came through, inquiring about sample collection. He lined up another shot even as a hand went up to his ear to press a small button on the device installed there. "Negative, Bray." He replied. A pull of the trigger, and another creature's head disappeared. "Our main priority right now is to comply with orders and focus on the defense of the shuttle. Anything else is secondary. If we have the chance to collect a sample for the scientists to analyze once Captain Maxirian is back, we will do so then. Not a moment sooner." He stated.

A shrill noise abruptly cut through the air as the shuttle's dual turret flared to life and fired into a group of monsters, completely obliterating one of them. The second round was likewise successful. Looks like someone finally woke up. Vincent thought with some measure of relief.

Said relief would disappear quickly, however. Focused as he was on the defense of the shuttle and the least capable members of the crew - in term of combat, that is - it never crossed his mind that one of said crew members would willingly rush out into the open, much less play hero. And yet, that was exactly what happened. Distracted by the ear-splitting noise of the shuttle's turrets, Vincent at first didn't hear Erina's shouting. But he quickly realized what was going on when she saw her and her assistant Roger heading towards a burning building on their own - with a pack of monsters in front.

"Altoch, wait!" The man shouted, but his orders fell on deaf ears.

Not far from him, Monica was carrying off her assigned duties with ruthless efficacy, severing heads and limbs off of any creature stupid enough to come within a few feet of herself or the boarding ramp. She had begun to notice already that her cuts weren't exactly the most effective way to dispatch these things - if the head was intact, it slowly began to regenerate the rest of the body... and even if she reduced it to an unrecognizable mass of tiny strips of flesh, it seemed that the regeneration wasn't halted, only slowed dramatically. From what she had been able to observe, they only stopped moving and healing when their head was melted somehow, but she didn't have anything on her that could create a fire, and she wasn't about to waste her precious explosive throwing knives on these things. They were far too expensive to throw away just like that.

Fortunately, even if her swords couldn't put them down for good, temporarily neutralizing them was enough for the job at hand. They didn't regenerate quickly enough to be a threat after she thoroughly diced them, and the fact that they might become a problem for the people of Gaia later on didn't concern her - they weren't paying her, so they could handle it on their own. With that in mind, she decapitated yet another of the things.

"Monica! Go after Erina and ensure her safety!" Came the unexpected command of her partner, Vincent. The woman could feel a scowl appearing on her face almost instantly, clearly expressing her displeasure at these new orders.

"She can take care of herself, Vince. I'm not a glorified babysitter." She replied irritably.

"Monica, that was not a request. It was an order." The man replied in a much more stern tone of voice that made it clear that she was not to argue further. Monica felt anger welling up inside her, but ultimately let out an exasperated sigh.

"Fine!" She shouted back before turning around... just in time for one of the monsters to rake at her torso with its claws, tearing her black tank-top and leaving three deep gashes across her stomach. "I liked that shirt you asshole!" The former assassin shouted furiously, decking the creature across the face with her bare knuckle hard enough to stagger it. Afterwards, she grabbed one of her knives from her belt and stabbed upwards just below the creature's chin, firmly lodging it into its head. With that done, she jumped back a fair distance just in time to watch it explode in a gory shower.

Explosive knives were expensive, but that one she wouldn't miss.

Having finished off the monster that attacked her, Monica set her sights on Erina and quickly sprinted across the battlefield to catch up with her. The wounds across her stomach didn't hamper her - already a thick layer of stone-like coral had formed on top, protecting her from infection and further injury and massively enhancing the regenerative abilities of her tissues. Jumping over Erina and Roger, she deftly turned in mid-air and landed in front of them.

"We're going back to the shuttle now, princess. We can do it the easy way, or I can drag you kicking and screaming. You decide."

Diego Losada - October 24th - Gaia, Nebra System

This mission was simply supposed to be a ordinary picking up someone important but of course it had to go south on the team's very first mission. He stood by the rest of the shuttle team with his rifle at his side and once the shuttle's landing dock opened up he sprayed out his first rounds into the one besides the one slain by Regar with his bullets shearing the creature in two as the incendiary rounds exploded. But the two halves still contorting on the ground as they appeared to slowly sew themselves back together was mortifying. His monitor picked up one that slain by Vincent didn't appear to get back up after a headshot so Diego jumped up to squash the flesh creature's head with his metallic boot ceasing its quivering.

"These things are nasty. Hope they don't leave too much of a mess to cleanup in my motors," said Diego with his combat suit slightly distorting his voice with an electronic pitch.

His suit's monitor however flashed a target circle on Erina who was breaking formation to run towards a burning building with several of the flesh monsters around it. Oh fuck!. He ran towards her to retrieve her but by the time he got there Monica was already there to bring Erina back whether she wanted to or not.

"Erina, if you're going to break rank at least take someone else for back up," said Diego unloading his rifle onto an incoming flesh monster, "These damn things are everywhere."

Regar
"That sounds incredibly indirect." The ship's captain said to Karu, "but we'll move toward the bar." He said but it wasn't even clear Karu heard him as she ran off to fight the creatures attacking Howie. Regar moved across the street towards the bar and found a monster who appeared busy smashing a hover car to pieces. He pulled out his viroblade and slashed at the monster's heels and sent it to its knees with a deep grown. However the monster threw its hand backwards and sent Regar flying to the ground. It turned around and finally seemed to notice Regar as its heels started to reform. It raised its right arm to slam down onto Regar. However Regar's drone hummed to life and began firing electric blast at the creature as its limbs fell apart to mush. Regar rolled to his right and got to his feet before stabbing his vibro blade right through the creature's temple. It fell limply to ground and he was able to regroup Karu and the others at front of the bar.

"Alright, let's keep going. This is taking too long." The commander said as they headed through the backdoor towards the police station. The back entrance to the police station was barred shut but after some banging on the door a face revealed it self. It was a middle age man with dark skin.

"The fuck you want alien?"

Regar scoffed, humans and their elegance. "We're here for somebody named Jasper. So open the door before those blob monsters aren't your only problem."

After a moment the door opened and the advance team was allowed inside.

The police station was practically abandoned except for two armed mercenary types, one of whom had answered the door. Another man was there, a short balding man who was sitting at a desk but jumped out of it when he saw Regar and the others.

"About time, I thought these creatures would kill me! You have to get me out of here!"

"That's what we're here for, relax. Come on, we're leaving the way we came." However as they moved towards the back door, a pack of monsters had crowded it banging on the door mindlessly.

"Nice job shit head, your banging drew them over here." The mercenary said, glaring at Regar who cursed in his native tongue.

"Alright, Nix its time for plan B. Get the doctor here to the roof and fly him back to the ship. The rest of us, we're going through the front door so get ready for a fight because once we open those doors its going to get rough in here."

The other mercenary who hadn't spoken yet spoke up angrily. He was younger and a bit bigger than the other one. "You fucking crazy? Those things will kill us?"

Regar seemed to ignore him as he reloaded his rifle, "Hide behind a desk like a coward then, we've got a fucking job to do."

Erina
Erina had almost made it the fire when suddenly an agile creature hopped in front of her. It was Monica, the mean looking mercenary who hung out with the second in command. She threatened to drag Erina and Roger back to the ship, and that of course scared her but she knew she had to help the people in trouble. Roger took a step forward toward Monica at the threat but Erina held him back as Diego arrived as well.

"Look, I'm sure you could drag me back if you want to. But it'd be quicker if you just helped me help these people right? Come on, you're super strong, and Diego here is strong too. With the two of you it'll take no time at all!" Erina insisted. Behind them the burning builder was fully visible. It was four floors, the entrance to the first one was almost directly behind Monica. The voices that were crying for help sounded like they were coming from the second floor. However, they soon weren't the only sounds they could hear.

A ship could heard landing behind them, a few hundred yards behind their own ship. Out came over a dozen soldiers as the ship took back off into the air and remained hovering over the scene. The soldiers were rushing towards the scene and began firing at the shuttle.

"Uh, well new plan. Maybe you should go deal with those guys and I'll save the people here?" Erina said hopeful that this would distract Monica away from her.

Raela Alestrandra - October 24th, 2230 - Gaia, Nebra System

Raela put her purple hat as she walked toward the shuttle dock bay. This mission, extracting a VIP out of a difficult circumstance was a type she had plenty of experience participating in the last time she had an employer. She found herself disliking such missions, generally refusing to engage in them once she became an independent contractor. The type of people that ended up hire a private security for things like these things tended to be rich people who found themselves in places where they were unwelcomed, protecting them often involved violently putting down people who in all likelihood had the right idea in wanting to harm them. At the least this time, when she was being called upon to use lethal force to put down a faceless mass of mud people clamoring after a VIP, it was not a bigoted euphemism for restless natives, but a literal description of the situation.

Soon after putting on her hat, it and the rest Raela's smart fibre clothing, her boots, her coat, her gloves, all dark purple, quickly clung around her black, metal laced undersuit, forming a suit of armor around her as she waited for the shuttle's landing dock to open. She reached to her hips, where she had two "holsters" full of programmable matter, a black clump that had the look of sand but was manipulated like wet clay, pulling out half a handful out of each before mushing both together into a single handful. She then pinched off a small clump into her right hand, about the size of a marble, before molding it into a perfect sphere. If one watched her hands closely in this process, they'd notice that her hand movements did not full account for the complete rounding of the sphere, as if another forced was at play.

She made her way down the ramp, semi-casually observing her surroundings before she focused in on one sludge monster. She flung her 'marble' at the creature with violent force. If a sensor was tracking it's speed, it'd read that it's velocity increased, rather than slowed down as at flew through the air. Just before impact, the ball of matter lit up in a brilliant plasma glow that suddenly burst outward as it impacted with the monster's chest. Soon after the impact, as if someone reached into the crater and tore it open, the monster's chest pulled apart, out do it's shoulders, it's neck and head ended up collapsing into crevice, before it toppled over into a goop.
Continuing to use her telekinetic powers, Raela fished the marble of matter out, it zipping back into her hands. She stepped off the ramp and onto the ground, turning around and repeating the tactic against monster after monster.

As she did, she noticed Erina running off, likely to engage in some ill thought out heroics and Vincent sending a reluctant Monica after her. When she saw Diego look in Erina's direction, Raela considering telling him to stay back, Vincent already sent Monica out, to go after her would just mean a second person disobeying orders, but she decided against it, based on what she had observed of Monica's mannerisms and tendencies, it was probably better for Erina's sake that someone else as there with Monica.

Raela caught a glimpse of a ship landing behind their own ship, dropping off over squad worth of soldiers before returning into the air to hover over them. While the she had no way of knowing their intentions, there was chance they'd be attempting to violently obstruct the team's mission. Whatever the case, it wouldn't hurt to keep a close eye on them. However orders were orders and she didn't want to be the third person to ignore them, so while still taking out sludge monsters, she gradually made her way close enough to Vincent to speak with him.

"What should be done about those recently arrived soldiers, sir? Keep an eye on them in case they engage us? Ambush them before they do?" Raela asked Vincent.

Howie Bronte

Howie gave a grim smile at Regar's plan. It was real simple, but that made it real effective; kill everything between them and the shuttle while flygirl over there got the big man out. He wasn't quite sure if he should lead out from the cop shop, maybe get the uglies on him to create a more efficient killzone for his team. After all, he was fairly certain no one was packing AP, and it'd take a heluva lot of bad luck for someone to smack him in a joint. Then he decided against it. Needlessly reckless, dangerous, and worse yet, stupid. No need to make a bad first impression to the captain, after all.

Instead, he did the smart thing. He waited, until Nix got their objective clear. After he was gone, the crew would have a lot more freedom to operate. And he even had a way to incentivize.

"Alright you bastards, anyone down for a wager? Whoever drops the least uglies buys drinks next bar we end up at, yeah? Honor system, no lying, you all probably get it."

M-55
M-55 was doing its job, watching the battles below with the monsters and keeping an eye out for anything really bad headed towards Karu.

Of course it 'looked' back at the shuttle and noticed the fire now being dropped on it. Registered it and tried to make a connection to the ship up in space as well as its mistress down in that building over there.

Karu

Karu just shakes her head, "Ubo you got anything can you give us overwatch on my...Okay..."

"Captain...just for you knowledge...we apparently have some party crashers at the shuttle...and they apparently want us dead...I would suggest Nix and I locate a different extraction point and send them there...unless you want to see if when the put fire on us take out our VIP...I'll give our front door fleshes a softening up from the roof before you slam open the door..."

Karu states this dryly and she grabs the VIP and hauls him up the stairs towards the roof access."So we need to ready you for flight...and I need to distract some flesh creatures...I hope you don't mind heights..."

Karu's mind is also linking with Ubo and scanning the 'city' and surrounding area for a safe point to send their VIP...somewhere out of harm's way.

Errol Wyrick - October 22nd, 2230
Helix, Nebra System

"Atithi Devo Bhava."

The Oriasa's kitchen was far from five-star. In its defense, it was far from pitiful either. It was surely sizable, stretching from the back wall of the airlock-sized pantry in the rear end to the handsome chestnut bar in the front, deep-set with shelves stocking every manner of glass ranging from the tiniest shot vessels to the fattest beer tumblers and a handsome collection of both Sol and Elnoi beer, wine, and spirits. The appliances were in spectacular condition, with glistening ovens, sparkling clean ranges burnt with the cleanest of gases, two coolers and a freezer with top-tier climate technology, and every manner of pot, pan, knife, utensil, and plate either stocked safely in a thick metal shelf or hanging from a long strut running through the entire perimeter of the room. And not only that, it was quite pretty, with glimmering tile that was unfortunately partially obscured by rubber matting and broad, gleaming overhead light. When you were on a planet, and you could feel the glow of starlight, some handy port windows cracked open for natural light. But it wasn't the best. All of the interior renovation in the world couldn't erase the fact that the Oriasa was once just a humble trading vessel, and it still bore the hallmarks. Instead of gravitational tech rooting one's feet down and preventing slips, there was rubber mats. The freezer wasn't walk-in, merely upright and boxy. The pantry always seemed to overflow slightly. One of the burners on the range was broken, and sometimes, the vacuum vents weren't able to suction away all of the steam. The gaps always seemed to be a little too narrow to pass through with a sizzling pan, and even with highly programmed ovens being able to nuke a piece of meat to the perfect degree in seconds, there always seemed to be mistakes if you didn't peer right through the glass window.

But, even despite those shortcomings, despite the fact that it was likely not the most handsome or even the most beautiful kitchen that any of the ten kitchen crew assembled had ever stepped in, it was all that they had. Well, aside from their guests of course.

"Do any of you know what this phrase means?" asked Errol Wyrick, the Oriasa's newly appointed head chef, pacing back and forth behind his kitchen's service counter in a casual stroll. Nine tall, wiry men stood in front of him with deep, shadowy bags under their eyes, hair in nests and obvious fatigue in their muscles, alternating between staring at their new boss from the opposite side of the long metal surface and staring amongst themselves in obvious confusion. It was a racially diverse group, consisting of three Noxial, two Elnoi, two humans, a Therian, and a Promethean, contacts that had been amassed by Errol over the years and had been conveniently looking for new work when the Oriasa's mission was first conceived. The aged man had fought tooth and nail with the organizers to be able to hire his own men, and on top of that, convince them why taking aboard five different races was important to the cultural perspectives and expertise in his kitchen. But he had won, he had won that war, and he was not letting his chosen nine off easy. Especially when they chose to remain silent to his question.

"That is the first broken rule. Silence is not tolerated when you should have something to say." Errol pressed on in a calm, slightly gruff voice that contrasted sharply with the steely gaze he clapped upon the row of men in front of him. "I asked you a question, and I expect a response. If you do know what the phrase means, you should respond with 'Yes, Chef.'. If you do not know what it means, you should respond with 'No, Chef.'. I chose this group of nine because I respected you as chefs and respected you as colleagues, and because the friends I contacted for opportunities spoke so highly of you and respected you as chefs and colleagues. What I don't respect is an inability to communicate. So, one more time, does anyone know what the phrase means?"

"...N-no." came a loose, collective mumbling from the other side of the counter, many of them staring down at their own feet by this point.

"No, what?"

"No, chef." came the reply back, a slightly firmer and more cohesive reply that seemed to ease Errol slightly, unknotting his brow and causing him to stop in place and begin to nod his head.

"Good, good...I was hoping that was the answer." Errol said, turning on his heel to directly face the men in front of him. "Well, let me satisfy your curiosity on what it means. I personally first came into contact with the phrase around...twelve, thirteen years ago, when I was still staffing for diplomatic missions to the Sol." he started, either oblivious to or simply unperturbed by the collective sighs and groans of jet-lagged men who would rather sleep than listen to what was gearing up to be an incredibly long tale. "One of the missions I was staffing for was a military conference located in Peela Kila, a city in New Indus, on Earth, I'm sure you all know where and what Earth is. Before New Indus, it had been India, but the conflicts with China...anyways, the point is, in that region of Earth, they have a saying, one of the native chefs there taught it to me. Over there, they say 'Atithi Devo Bhava'. In English, it translates to three words; 'Guest is God'."

"In New Indus, the guest is not just a guest, he or she is like a God. You welcome them as you would the human embodiment of God, and you treat them as you would the human embodiment of God, even if that embodiment is...vulgar, and rude, and a horrendous, horrendous tipper." he said, eliciting a murmur of laughter from the group. "In fact, let me ask you something, all of you, what is the worst man or woman you've ever had to serve? Anyone feel free to speak."

After a moment of silence, a stout, muscular human on the left side of the room raised his hand, letting it hang in the air before Errol acknowledged him. "Gregor, yes! Please share your story!"

"Well, uh..." Gregor started, scratching his beard as he began to dredge up his story. "Back home, in London, when I was on my first day as a sous chef, an old woman marched right up to the kitchen counter and threw hollandaise in my face!" he said aloud, a mixture of sympathetic groans and subtle giggles breaking out from the rest of the men in response. "She said I didn't cook the eggs right, that they were too cooked to be soft-boiled. I nearly quit on the spot right then and there."

"I'm sorry to hear that." Errol said somberly, looking around at the other eight members of the group. "Anybody else?"

"Hmm..." purred a Noxial at the end of the line by the name of Grimlock, a man only second in stature to Errol himself. "When I took my job at the space station, there was a human woman stationed there who hated me. She called me "Kraken", and refused to eat anything touched by a chef from the Collective. She was often drinking too...it's a miracle they didn't discharge her during my tenure."

"Good, yes, more of these customers. Who's next!" Errol yelped gleefully, his eyes brightening as more began to speak out.

"A man stole food from the mine's pantry!" shouted Silvin, the youngest one in the crew. "That food was supposed to go to the biggest camp in Jako, and it went to his greedy mouth. Every day, he would sit in, eat something paltry, and sneak around into the stocks to find our best. It took three men to drag him out the building!"

"I had a regular who would harass the ladies in my kitchen." stated Gideon, the Promethean, pushing his spectacles up his nose as he spoke. "He would always come up to the service window with his nonsense, and try to grab any woman who was brave enough to serve him. For a while, no woman would come to eat or work because of him."

"He sent the damn meal back four times!"

"She insisted that we had spiked her fish with poison!"

"He threatened to blow my brains out in front of the entire mess hall!"

"Our sous chef nearly lost his hand because of that dog!"

"Horrifying!" Errol laughed, clapping his hands at the now freely sniggering and riled-up group of men before him. "Some guests are terrible. There are many great ones, and even more good or average ones, but there are some truly horrible customers, truly horrible people that you have been tasked with serving. In fact, on this very crew, while I'd like to believe that we will get along splendidly with our shipmates, there is a chance that some of them will be cruel, and wicked, and treat you unfairly because you are mere chefs, you are background men, you are not heroic soldiers or genius engineers or even talented pilots. Grimlock, you mentioned a woman who would not eat anything touched by an Elnoi, and Henri, you mentioned a man who threatened to shoot you because of your skin. There may be guests like this on board this ship, those who discriminate and bias and hold prejudice, and the only thing you can do is treat them as God."

"So...what, you're saying we should just bear it?" blurted out Aucher, one of two Elnoi men of the crew, and the only one who hadn't spoken up with a story. "If they act like racists towards us, just let them do it, don't even bother lashing back, just accept that we're worse, that we're below them?"

"You were never below them, and never will be." Errol said firmly, crossing his arms in front of his chest. "But you are different. They are guests on this ship, and we are hosts, and as hosts, it's our duty to treat every man and woman on board with the utmost respect, compassion, and care that we can. We must spoil and pamper them, because that is our duty, just as their duty is to risk their lives in a gunfight or solve the most complicated of mathematics in seconds. You should never forget who you came from and who you are, but never forget your place either, never forget what you came here to do. Am I clear?"

"Yes, Chef!" came a responding cry from the line, the voices finally welding together into one solid tone. However, it wasn't enough for Errol, who had other plans in mind.

"GOOD! Now recite after me. 'Guest Is God'."

"Guest is God."

"Louder! Guest is God."

"Guest is God, chef!"

"EVEN LOUDER!"

"GUEST IS GOD. CHEF!"

"WHO IS GOD?"

"GUEST IS GOD!!!"

Gaia, Nebra System

"Atithi Devo Bhava."

It was uncommon to see the head chef of the mess hall strolling around the corridors of his facility during a breakfast rush, his first breakfast rush too, but there Errol was, strolling through the dense corridors of the upper deck at a lumbering, slow pace. Every step practically triggered a small earthquake, with his left boot swinging across and down to smash down with tremendous force and his right booth following right behind with a slight drag across the floor. The foot hadn't felt right in months, and he lost more and more feeling in both every week, but he had learned to manage. He had learned to walk normally with the left, and as for the right, well, he was close enough to normal to hide it. Nobody would really notice anyways; the support crew were never noticed.

However, he had a watchful eye. He noticed everything, everything that went on in his kitchen, everything that went on in the people around him, and everything that went on in the ship. Which is why when the locker door clattered shut, he not only heard it in perfect definition, but was able to use the sound to guide him to the source. One left turn that way, two rights, a u-turn back when he hit a dead end, and another left, and there he was, staring straight ahead down the corridor the ship's bridge. He could see a figure moving about in the darkness, and the slight crunching sounds of someone eating at their console. He didn't need to speculate long about who it was though; the flickering of lights suddenly gearing to life and basking the entire bridge in a soft glow soon revealed the answer for him. Karu Na'tala, the Acux pilot, huddled over a brown paper bag that carried the thin scent of dried meat. His interactions with her had been limited, and yet eventful nonetheless given her...unique personality, but she was a decent girl. Given that they hadn't crashed yet, she was likely a solid pilot too.

Errol let his boots clatter loudly against the floor as he approached closer, giving an obvious sign of his presence as he forced his right foot to stop dragging. "You should find your way to breakfast, Ms. Na'tala," he started, a hint of amusement in his voice as he got closer and closer to the bridge proper. "The chefs and I have cooked a lovely pancake and waffle breakfast, with pastries as well, we've had the bakers' ovens running full steam for hours. It seems as if you have been running full steam for hours too."

October 24th, 2230
Planet Unknown, Gaia

"Atithi Devo Bhava."

Guest was God. That was the motto. It was why he had arranged his nine men into a phalanx-like structure backing behind the rest of the Advance and Shuttle team, equipped with nothing but the kitchen's arsenal of knives and blades, two high-caliber, low-recoil pistols brought on board by Gregor and Gideon for self-defense, and nine rudimentary shields, made up of long silonium plates that they had previously used for the ovens. It was a silly rig for sure, but an effective one. The silonium plates were just as effective as any armor, and the knives were far from just daggers, with half of them being laced with chemicals that they had raided the pantry for, a few having superheated edges, and Errol's own personal knife being ready to shock any beast that came his way. If only there was more time...they had taken the basic precautions when boarding the shuttle, readying knives and rudimentary shields if solely because they were expected to defend it if worst came to worst. Yet, he still hadn't expected the worst to actually happen, nor had he expected for his crew to have to use their knives and shields. And now, all he could do was shout orders from behind his knight's guard, because otherwise, the shrine to his Gods would be overrun.

"Spread wide, don't let one slip inside the shuttle!" Errol cried out, sending a sweeping gesture out to the sides to cue his men to take a wide guard. They somewhat complied, beginning to shakily spread themselves out across the width of the boarding to ramp to block the monsters from crawling up. The efforts of Vincent, Illvara, and Raela were keeping many of the beasts at bay, but a small clump still forced themselves up the gangway, running at frankly alarming speed. The men were not quite ready for the impact, with the beasts ramming up against their makeshift shields and forcing many to stumble back up the ramp by several steps. "Hold steady, push them to the sides and out!" Errol continued to shout, drawing his own dagger and advancing from behind as the battle continued to rage. He knew there was no chance of stabbing the things to death; he had seen them stand up after bullets. But his men were strong, perhaps even stronger than the monsters, and they could throw the creatures off balance before killing them outright. Knock them down the ramp, or even better, knock them off the side.

Somehow, it worked. It wasn't tremendously effective, but it did the job, it did the damn job. The creatures put up a fight, but the men locked firm, pushing the beasts back by a fraction and using the empty space to land punches and kicks that sent the beasts back several paces, or taking the opportunity to strike their heads with the plates and send them toppling down off the side. "GOOD, GOOD, MOVE FORWARD, PUSH THEM OUT! NO SPACES, NO GAPS!" Errol crowed, rushing forward to brace the backs of two Noxial men that were currently struggling with a particularly large monster. "Work with me, Maxim, Noel." Errol muttered, locking his legs behind him and providing enough stability to bring the beast into a stalemate. "Let a little bit of slackness go, bait them in, and then shove back. If we can knock this one down, we'll take down half of their legs. Ready?"

"Ready." the two men grunted back, bracing their own legs in kind to prepare for the push.

"3...2...1..." Errol counted, the three men loosening their frames and letting their arms fall slack. The beast surged forward, pushing their plates right up against them and clawing furiously in an attempt to break through.

"PUSH!" came the collective shout in response, the three men snapping their arms straight and thrusting forward in an equally violent surge. The already-unbalanced creature was unprepared for the assault, and was sent crashing towards the ground, its arms and legs snagging on the legs of his compatriots to send the entire group of beasts tumbling down the ramp, save for a few stragglers. Errol could feel himself breathe a sigh of relief as he watched the monsters fall, almost smiling, almost laughing in satisfaction. The other men were even less cautious, whooping in joy as they pushed forward down the ramp.

And then...gunshots.

Out of the corner of his right eye, all Errol could do was watch as Henri, the sous chef, suddenly crumpled to the floor, a flash of red taking up the space where his head once was and a disgusting, stomach-knotting gurgling noise rippling out from the side. The other men suddenly began to rush towards their fallen comrade, but several more cracks broke through the air, causing Errol and those at the left of the row to cower and cover their ears, and causing Maxim and Gregor to fall back on the floor with cries of pain. From a quick glance, Maxim had largely been spared thanks to his tough Noxial skin, the rounds only leaving marks on his leg and foot, but Gregor was hurt badly, all over his shoulder, his knee, his arms. More blood, more wounds. The tumble had brought them time, but the rest of the monsters would climb back soon, and when they did, it would be little time before their broken formation would get overrun. Time to fall back.

"RETREAT, RETREAT! Everybody, drag Henri and Gregor, they're too injured to walk! Maxim, if you can move, move! Keep their wounds clear of the ramp! Carry them if you have to!" Errol screamed, gesturing wildly towards the entrance to the shuttle. The men scuttled out of the line of fire, with only a few stopping to grab the wounded Gregor by the armpits and begin to cart him back towards the gap. Maxim seemed to be able to move, as did the rest, but they had forgotten someone; Henri. In the chaos, Errol could see his dark form huddled at the edge of the ramp, a growing splotch of red forming underneath his head. And worse still, another beast, advancing at lightning speed towards his body.

"NO!" Errol cried, and without thinking, began to scramble towards his colleague, boots rapidly striking the ground as he charged towards the monster at a pace that seemed to grow slower and slower by the second. Everything was a blur. He barely even felt himself slam shoulder-first into the beast's head with a sickening crunch, sending it keeling off the side of the ramp and sending himself right back down his behind with a solid thump. His shoulder seared with pain, but he was alive. Alive. Henri wouldn't be. Reaching over his body now, he could see his chest rising and falling, and his lips trembling, and his eyelids quivering, but there was a hole, a deep, jagged hole in the side of his neck, and blood was seeping everywhere. He worked with animal blood every day, but this...this was too real. He needed to gag, or hurl his guts. He couldn't do that. He had to save Henri's life, save Henri's life before the bullets ripped again.

And so, he pulled his chef up the arms, and began to drag him back into the safety of the shuttle's entrance, shouting into his earpiece for the first time. "This is Errol, I-I...I..." he faltered, struggling to catch his breath. "W-where did those damn shots come from, my men...my men are hurt. Where's the rest of the Shuttle Team?"

Ija

On the ground, the intensifying battle was a nightmare. Up in orbit, Ija had no idea what the experience must have been. Dots moved around — smudges that the ship's cameras helped her collate into patterns and formations, predicting their motion and finding regions they were moving towards and away from. Flashes sparked the high-frequency sensors, letting her know where gunfire was and, more usefully, where it wasn't. But it was numbers and graphs, matrices and vectors, nothing more.

When a bitstring reached the Oriasa's dish with an alert from Ubo, warning the crew about the escalating firefight at the shuttle, she pinged back a voiceless confirmation and then got to work helping Karu pinpoint locations to move. Her predictive model spat out terabytes of useless junk that a biosophont couldn't be bothered to parse; she had to train new algorithms on the noise, narrowing down a list of coordinates and radii corresponding to safe circles. The M-55 unit, as well as its biological master, received a string of text marking out latitudes and longitudes, with an attached suggestion in plaintext about how "I will be unable to follow these up after horizon cutoff, T minus sixty-five seconds."

There was more to do. Her thorough ionospheric search had managed to pick up communications from the new arrivals engaging the ground forces, who'd come in totally undetected despite her best efforts to monitor the orbital situation. Concluding that they must have come in through the atmosphere locally, Ija moved on to more relevant information. Their messages were hidden behind a layer of encryption... albeit one too weak to withstand a serious breach. Ija shut down everything nonessential she had been working on, set up a parallel operation across her entire set of core processors, and punched through the encryption in one swift stroke taking only a few seconds. The results were repetitive and minimal: she could only really discern that they were talking about the Black Star itself, and found nothing helpful that would identify them.

The best thing to do with a spoken list was to continue it. Her next message once again excitedly touched the group comms system, perhaps not adequately conveying the gravity of the situation.

"Advisory two! Establish, at some point, the nature of your attackers. I've concluded that they must be local to Gaia — cracking their comms, all I know is that they're here specifically to kill you."

Then, judging by the head chef's panic over comms, people had been injured — and not even combatants, at that. She checked and double-checked the logs, trying to piece together exactly why they had been cleared for a VIP-recovery mission and took up valuable seats on the shuttle that other team members could have filled better, but nothing came to her right away, and there were more relevant uses of her CPU.

Ija made a note regardless — she had some very particular words for Errol when he returned.

Vincent's job was quickly proving to be much more of a hassle than he had initially hoped for - and that was accounting for the crew's lack of cohesion and discipline already. First, Erina had broken formation to try and save some civilians even though the captain had explicitly ordered them to defend the shuttle and he himself had ordered to establish and maintain a perimeter around it. He had already sent Monica after the Sigal princess in order to keep her safe, but that only meant they had not only been deprived of a technician with a gun, but also a soldier extremely capable in close quarters combat. Then, as if that wasn't enough, Diego also broke formation to go after Erina, further compromising their already fragile perimeter. Even with the aid of the automatic gunfire from the shuttle's twin turret, they risked being overrun by the monsters because of this.

And then, to top everything off, an unknown transport vessel touched down not far from where the Oriasa's shuttle had landed, releasing over a dozen soldiers. They were clearly very well equipped and armed, with military level weaponry and body armor. From the style of their drop ship as well as that of their armor, along with the fact that they bore ballistic weaponry, Vincent inferred that this was a group of well-connected human mercenaries, though what their business was in this part of Nebra was anyone's guess. He'd have to keep an eye on them, but for now he had more pressing matters.

Such as the encroaching pack of monsters. Realizing that perhaps Monica had the right idea in disabling them quickly even if it didn't necessarily mean they were neutralized, Vincent grabbed his other pistol and loaded it with explosive ammunition before firing off both at the oncoming horde. Even for a veteran and a good shot such as himself, headshots took a moment to line up, however minute. Shots aimed to the center of mass were a much simpler affair, more mechanical and with a smaller error margin. Explosive rounds began tearing into the creatures, leaving gaping holes in them and blowing off arms, legs, and even parts of the neck with some of the luckier shots. Not enough to stop them for good, but enough to dramatically slow their advance. At that moment, that was exactly what they needed - some space to breathe.

From the corner of his eye, he spotted a certain dark skinned woman approaching, one of their stealth specialists, Raela. He wasn't quite sure how that orb-shaped weapon of hers worked, but he was certainly glad to have her on his side. Looking at her, he opened his mouth to speak.

"DOWN!" He shouted without thinking, grabbing Raela's arm and dragging her down to a crouching position. A flash from the muzzle of one of the soldiers' rifles was all it took to trigger years of training and experience, as well as establish a vital fact - these were not friends. Pressing a finger to a small button on the frame of his shades, he muttered the word 'record' in order to grab some data to analyze later.

"It's a bit late for either of those options, Alestrandra. Try to use the urban environment to flank them - their eye in the sky can't see through concrete I'm sure." He instructed. "And if at all possible, once their backs are to you, try to incapacitate one of them non-lethally for interrogation, but don't do so at the cost of putting yourself at risk." He added afterwards. "I'll see you on the other side."

With that done, Vincent stood up from his cover and fired off several explosive rounds at the approaching soldiers in order to halt their advance and give his people some room to breathe. At the same time, he shouted into his earpiece. "Rollins, turn the turret's fire to the new arrivals! I'll keep the monsters out of the shuttle. Bray, see if you can't neutralize some of them before they manage to surround us." He ordered before ducking again and moving back towards the shuttle. "Losada, I ordered Lantrix to go after Altoch, not you. One of you has to come back and help keep the shuttle safe. Decide quickly. Anyone else - you have no business outside of the shuttle, so fall back immediately."

After issuing those orders, Black Star's second in command put away his pistols and instead grabbed his plasma blunderbuss, previously strapped to his back - if he was going to make good on his word and keep the shuttle safe, he would need some heavy firepower that could handle groups easily. As he ran back, he heard Errol's cries over the comms, and realized that the cooking team had suffered in the struggle.

Damn it, this wouldn't have happened if we had maintained our perimeter! He thought, but opted to keep that to himself for the time being. There would be time for that later, but presently, anything that could harbor resentment would simply be a distraction in their battle for survival. "I'm on my way, Wyrick! Stay behind cover!" He shouted back over the comms.

Finally reaching the shuttle, he rushed inside and then turned around, swiftly firing off two shots to scatter the monsters that had gathered around the boarding ramp - the globs of ionized gas burned away their flesh just as well as the chemical components in his explosive bullets. A single lucky creature managed to escape harm and rushed towards him, but Vincent raised his right leg and kicked the creature down with incredible force thanks to his cybernetic leg. The ramp, for now, was clear, so he turned around to assess the damage.

A few of the cooks in Errol's team had been harmed, but by far the one in the most precarious condition was a young man by the name of Henri, who sported a nasty bullet wound in the side of his neck. It was a miracle that he still seemed to be breathing, and it was clear that he'd need urgent medical attention, but even in a situation as grim as this, there was some hope - the lad hadn't lost too much blood yet, and his airways were unobstructed. It was a start. Thinking quickly, the former detective took off his necktie, but as he looked at Henri again, he froze.

He did not see Henri the sous chef lying in a puddle of his own blood in the metallic floor of the Oriasa's shuttle. He saw Harvey Blackmoore the Third, Sergeant Major in the 257th Mechanized Division, lying in the bloodstained sand of the treacherous desert surrounding Solano. The two had been friends, but Vincent had been unable to save him from a bloodthirsty Acux's rifle, and the man had perished in that accursed world, Raenor.

Vincent closed his eyes shut and counted to three before opening them. He was once more on the shuttle, with a man on death's doorstep lying on the floor.

"Take this. Apply it to the wound, it should slow down the hemorrhage." He told the cook closest to the wounded man, tossing him his silk tie. "Keep his legs up but otherwise don't move him unless necessary. There should be a first aid kit on the back, see if there isn't a tube of sealing gel in there." He continued, before turning back to the ramp and taking aim with his blunderbuss.

No one else was getting hurt today. Not if he could help it.

Vincent told her not to bother with samples and to save it for the science team. She shrugged and left the slimy cadaver alone. It was fair, she wasn't a scientist and probably wouldn't handle the biohazardous material properly regardless. So she started to head back to the group when she heard a dropship land, however, it started offloading troops that immediately began to take potshots at the group. Illvara remained quite calm despite the weapons shots whizzing past her and the metallic sound of the gunfire hitting the ship. Though she could still make out Vincent's orders for her to stall them. That she could do. "Consider it done." She replied and then jumped behind some cover, some shots striking the ground where she ran.

There were at least a dozen from a glance. Probably more. Not the worst odds she'd ever faced, and she'd probably be able to take a few out initially, plus a few more after her first and maybe second resurrection. Hopefully by then the rest of the group jumped in to help her before they figured out her trick. She crawl along the wall closer to the soldiers. They knew she was here, and were likely approaching slowly. She recalled the closest two and charged a pair of lightning bolts, more than enough to kill a few people even through armor. She'd need a recharge after, but that stored electricity was worthless unless it was used.

Illvara popped around the corner and unleash a bolt of lightning from each hand. The lightning struck two of the soldiers, blasting them off their feet and leaving a nasty scorch mark on their chests. Immediately the others trained their weapons on her and shot with the power expected from trained soldiers. Their rounds tore into her and killed her within a second. Illvara hit the ground and the soldiers moved forward past her bleeding corpse. A another few seconds passed and Illvara's body flashed for a moment, her wounds completely gone and she stood back up, pulling out her shotgun and firing at the soldiers from behind.

"What the hell?!" One of the soldiers shouted, turning around just in time to see an electrically charged slug pierce the armor and enter the body of another. Several soldiers turned around, firing at Illvara who remained in cover, but she successfully forced them them halt their advance and split their fire between her, the ship and the others.

Raela Alestrandra - October 24th, 2230 - Gaia, Nebra System

As Vincent finished speaking to her, Raela noded before her helmet closed around her face. It wasn't worth it to attempt to engage the whole group and force them to retreat before incapacitating one for interrogation, but she could defiantly separate and disable one of them while the rest while the rest were pre occupied. She stepped back and made sure she was out of the line of sight of the enemy shuttle hanging overhead, before activating her arctisite invisibility cloak. Now invisible, she carefully took stock of the situation around her and carefully analyzed the position of the enemy mercenaries. She'd flank them, using buildings to ambush and separate one of them from the rest and deal with them alone.

Raela began siphoning kinetic energy from the bullets being fired toward the shuttle and added it her own speed as she ran to the position she picked out. As she ran while invisible, the outer limits of her eyesight progressively started to blur, and her hearing similarly muffled. Such were the consequences of her remaining cloaked while moving, though due to the nature of the urban environment they were in, and the relatively short distance she had to run, it was not much of an issue, as she reached her spot and and got into position.

Raela took note of one soldier, facing in the opposite direction of his fellow mercenaries, clearly watching for a flanking maneuver such as hers, but unfortunately for him, he couldn't see her even if he was staring directly at her. Taking note of what looked like a hotel that he was standing in front of, Raela prepared to separate him from the rest of the group without their noticing, and without their being able to reach him. Still siphoning from the kinetic energy from the bullets being fired at the shuttle, Raela telekinetically fling the solider upward and through the third floor window of the hotel. Not wasting time, Raela, still cloaked, ran to an alley next to the hotel. She wall hopped between the neighboring building and the hotel before crashing through another of the hotel window and instantly reorienting herself into a landing position. She decloaked her invisibility to ensure she'd maintain complete awareness of her surroundings before rounding a hallway corner into the third floor lobby of the hotel. By now, the soldier began to regain his senses and grip on his rifle and upon spotting her, he aimed and started firing.

Raela dived to avoid the bullets, eventually hiding behind a pillar before quickly returning to invisibility. He advanced toward the left side of the pillar, as Raela slowly moved to the mercenary's right flank while making sure she kept enough space for a running start. Then, she began to charge at him, before decloaking and flashing into a flying tackle just before impact, knocking the gun out of his hand on his hitting the floor with her on top of him. Before he could even attempt to reach for it for it, Raela telekinetically shoved it away, making sure to slide underneath a nearby row of chairs rather than let it end up stuck underneath them.

While Raela was focused elsewhere, the soldier managed to grab his plasma pistol with his left hand and pump a shot against Raela's right hip, making it through her armor on account of it being up against it her hip. Raela responded with an anguished grunt, but in a flash, while still on top of him, her hands move to soldier's gun, prying it out of his hand and chucking it away. Next, the mercenary to reached for his plasma knife with his right hand but before he can stab her, Raela quickly grabs his wrist with both of her hands and attempts to wrench it out of his hand. In the struggle, half of Raela's right hand little finger is cut off by the plasma blade, though she is eventually able to discard it as well. Unfortunately for her, this gives the mercenary the opportunity to throw hard left handed punch at the place where he shot, compressing her freshly burned flesh, Raela let's out another pained grunt, before before grasping his left wrist with her right hand, leaving her in control of both of his hands. Desperate, he pulled himself up and headbutt her helmet. Raela, let out an annoyed chuckle, she hardly felt the impact, it was absolutely nothing compared to her maimed finger or charred hip.

"My turn." Raela said bitterly, before returning the favour with a far harder headbutt, visibly cracking the visor of the soldier's helmet, which snaps his head back to the floor, leaving him dazed.

Raela started standing, dragging up her adversary, before flinging him across the lobby, adding additional force to the throw with a telekinetic shove. As he flew through the air, his leg clipped a row of chairs as he tumbled over it and he hit the floor awkwardly as he slid against a reception desk. Raela casually made her way to the mercenary. After a few moments of regaining his senses, he begins look at Raela moving towards him. he decides to walk around a row of chairs instead of clearing them out for a more direct path, visibly cupping the stub that was left of her right hand's little finger. She'd lost fingers too many times to count, but her foe had no way of knowing that. Realizing that Raela wasn't in a rush, he starts moving, preparing to stand up, all while keeping an eye on her. Raela finally reaches the man and stands directly in front of him and the mercenary continues looking up at her as he struggled to get to his feet, awkwardly using the desk to try and prop himself up, avoiding putting too much weight on his injured leg. Just as his head passes the reception desk as he gets up, he buckles back below it, he looks down and clutches at his knee with his left hand, before looking up back up to Raela, who'd by now tilted her head to the side, acknowledging the injury.

Raela then turned her head down look at the plasma burn on her hip, and the mercenary followed her gaze, before finally looking back up at Raela staring at him. In an instant, Raela lifts her left hand up in a fist and brings it crashing down on the soldier's right hand has he used it to prop himself up. She feels his hand shatter, as Raela manages leaves a dent in metal desk. Before the mercenary is able to cry in anguish, she lift her left leg and stomps on the mercenary's injured right knee, dropping his head level with the edge of the desk. Next, she griped his right shoulder with her left hand and swiftly pulled her right knee into the side of his head, slamming it against the edge of the reception desk. Raela, let's him crumple to the floor, unconscious. She kneels down and grabs him by the back of his armoured collar, before dragging his limp body across to hotel floor toward an unbroken window facing the street below. As she does, she telekinetically draws in debris toward herself, converting it into fuel for expediated healing as she cringes through the pain of it.

Raela opened up her comms and contacted Vincent.

"...I've Isolated and incapacitated one of the mercenaries, sir. The rest are still fighting, sending you my location..." she reports.

Nix

As the team came upon the police station a rather trucking predicament evolved, how to get in? For Nix, the answer would be as simple as going through a window, but once in there was no telling what awaited her. Still, while Regar and Karu debated, she took the time to fly around the building. A way in was important, but she needed a way out. Luckily, it seemed the upper floors were mostly clear.

Nix took a few shots at the things surrounding the station to thin the herd a little bit before returning to the group. They had decided, it seemed, to go the most roundabout way possible. Through a building next door. Whatever, it was their call. Once inside though, it became clear that, as was expected, Nix was the lynch pin to the whole thing properly working. The rest of the advance squad basically were to be decoys. She was to usher the VIP. Simple, easy, and a bit bland.

"Alright, Jasper, was it? I found a nice window two floors up. We'll take that out and away to safety. Not a hair on your head even threatened. A few rules though. Hold on tight, but don't let your mitts wander, or you might fall. I may be a bot but creeps still irk me. Are we good to go? "

Giving a nod to the rest of the crew, she put away one blaster and blasted a whole in the ceiling making sure no one was below. "Alright, up we go. Hold on tight!"

Nix grabbed Jasper with her open arm and pulled him close. Then, workout warning, she sped off through the whole, up some stairs, and clear of the building, heading towards the shuttle and leaving the others behind. The mission was in the bag.

The home stretch quickly arrived, but trouble could be seen and heard in the distance as a separate shuttle descended near their own, spilling out soldiers that immediately opened for on Nix's home base.

"Well, that is awkward. Please, Jasper, stay here for a moment."

Nix landed lightly on a distant building and motioned for him to stay back. She approached the edge and got propped herself up one one knee, her augmented eyes supplying a much clearer view than many a rifle scope. She just needed to find a good target....

Each soldier she saw didn't seem like it would be worth taking the shot. Besides, the shuttle squad could handle them. It was the opposing ship that concerned her the most. Then, Nix got an idea. A glorious, perfect idea. She lined up her shot, pulled the trigger, and repeated a quick three consecutive times. The shuttle the soldiers had come in was rocked by the sudden assault of anti-armor plasma, and one of it's wings received a large, crude hole. Escape was now impossible.

"Well then, it seems like our unruly guests have been grounded. I'm sure their mothers would be proud. "

Diego Losada - October 24th - Gaia, Nebra System

"Look, I'm sure you could drag me back if you want to. But it'd be quicker if you just helped me help these people right? Come on, you're super strong, and Diego here is strong too. With the two of you it'll take no time at all!"

"Fine I'll help," said Diego with a bit of a grumble before amplifying his voice at the second floor, "Anyone whose close to the window step back!"

As the motors in his suit's legs started to whine he leaped up into the second floor's crashing into the the end of a hallway that ended at the wall. He scanned the nearby rooms before detecting at least four people on the room next to him which prompted him to to bust through the doorway. Ignoring their shock he scooped them up over his shoulders and with a kick broke open a hole in the wall for him to leap out of. He gestured for them to run to wherever there weren't monsters but a loud series of pings in his scanner caused him to swivel around to face back towards the shuttle. His scanner then started blaring in red alerts as he spotted the new ship in the distance with its so called cargo assaulting their shuttle.

"What in the world? So looks like I left a bit prematurely...Just fucking great," said Diego as he looked on over at Erina, "You and your bot have to save them quickly. With these interlopers I won't be able to get back here in case something happens."

He started running back towards the shuttle and started firing into the shuttle's assailants or at least what was left of them. With another ping he noticed that their own ship was beginning to have difficulties staying in the air with some distant attacks from one of his group's own. That was some good news at least. A hail of bullets bounced of his suit but he didn't need to pay them any mind as he scooped up one of the downed flesh monster from the ground and activated his arctisite to charge it up. He then threw it into the air above the soldiers and with a press of his thumb to his fingers it exploded in a brief flash to hopefully disorient the remainder of the soldiers.

"Come on and face me cowards!" shouted Diego.
