Name: Illvara Bray
Species: Human
Gender: Female
Age: 29
Appearance:Here
Role: Soldier
Expertise: Security, good deal amount of combat training with most firearms. Exceptionally skilled arctisite combatant.
Abilities: Electricity Manipulation: Illvara has an impressive degree of control over electricity. Allowing her to both shoot it as a projectile and absorb it within herself.
Resurrective Immortality: By far her more impressive and powerful ability. When killed by something physical, such as being shot, she will appear once again a few seconds later within a few feet, fresh and ready to go.
Weaknesses: Like a Battery: She does need to have some energy stored up in order to use her electricity powers.
Imperfect Resurrection: Illvara will come back to life if she is killed, however, the power does not stop what may have killed her. For example, she can starve to death, and while her ability will restore her to life, she will still be on the verge of dying from starvation. Or freezing to death on an ice world. Another side effect is that she tends to lose some of her memory from when she is killed. Meaning she could be restored to life without knowledge of what actually killed her. There are a few ways to permanetly kill her. The first being to force her power to eventually burn out via consistently killing her, or shooting her into an incredibly hostile environment. Her power is also rather strange when it comes to poisons. A slow acting poison would likely not be removed from her body upon resurrection. Eventually causing repeated deaths until permanent unless she receives the antidote.
The time between her resurrections increases if she is killed quickly in succession.
Bio: Illvara was born on Apex. Her mother perished shortly after her birth, which left her in the care of Harum Bray, her father. Harum himself was an expert in pushing the absolute limit of arctisite and what it could feasibly perform. He'd gone through several generations of different strains and had developed what he believed to be the ultimate strain for the perfect, unstoppable warrior. And so he infused it with his daughter with the hopes of seeing what it could do. At first tests seemed quite underwhelming. She could absorb electricity and manipulate it in various ways, but that seemed about average. Not the ultimate warrior he expected. So he ran her through more and more rigorous test in an attempt to figure out what else she could do. Most of which ended with failure. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Until a few years later, in her late teenage years, when his lab was attacked by some unknown assailants, targeting his very valuable supply of arctisite. Illvara happened in be in their path, and defended herself, accidentally killing two of them before getting shot in the head, killing her instantly. Harum himself barely had time to react to her death until a few seconds later, much to the surprise of both the armed mercenaries and Harum himself, Illvara was reborn in a quick flash. She was also shocked at the revelation, but continued to fight the assailants. She managed to kill another one before getting shot several times by a plasma rifle. Once again, albeit a few seconds slower than her first resurrection, she returned, and killed one more before the thugs opted to retreat rather than keep fighting.

Harum however, while happy that his daughter was okay, was far more interested in the fact that, in his own words, he had "Solved the human condition." Which meant she was going to have to undergo more tests. Likely far more intrusive and death inducing tests. So, Illvara quickly understood that her arctisite meant more to her father than he did and ran away at the first chance she could. Then she realized she had very little money and decided to do the one thing she felt like she could do: Fight. The assault on her father's lab had left it's mark on her. She killed four armed men by herself. So she did the only reasonable thing she felt she could do and signed up for King of the Hill where she spent the next several years of her life.

Quickly, she became known and feared throughout the arena. Even earning a title as "The Crowned Tempest." A seeming one woman army of lightning that seemingly could not be beat. However, despite the fame and wealth it brought her, she felt... Empty. Bored. Why her father didn't try searching for her, she didn't know. Her victories came to a point where simply, no one would bother sending more gladiators to fight her. Bored with her success, she purchased two things. A custom weapon, and a ticket off of Apex to go out into the wider galaxy and find a cause beyond simple bloodsport. In her search, she found a strange initiative called "Operation: Event Horizon" where races from both the Confederacy and Collective were attempting some weird cooperative venture to take a step towards peace.

If nothing else, it sounded like some fun.
Equipment: Her custom shotgun, Arcbreaker: A custom shotgun that uses her own electrical powers as both a means to power the weapon and supercharge it's ammunition.

Name: Vincent Valstrad
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 48 - born in 2187
Appearance: 1, 2, 3. Six feet three inches tall.
Role: Soldier
Expertise: Criminal investigation, negotiations
Abilities:
  • Interrogation, evidence gathering and abductive reasoning skills.
  • Extensive weapons training, self-defense training, and combat experience.
  • Land vehicle operation skills
  • Extensive knowledge of the Abyss underground
  • Berserk Trigger - Thanks to genetic modification, in dangerous situations Vincent's body may begin secreting a massive amount of hormones to boost his muscle mass, reflexes, cellular regeneration and pain tolerance.
Weaknesses:
  • Honor and loyalty - Vincent has a personal code of honor that he will not break under any circumstance and which includes not harming innocents, acting with integrity during negotiations, exchanges and transactions, and especially, protecting his comrades.
  • Shadow of war - Vincent's time in Solano has become a part of him. Dreams and flashbacks haunt him to this day.
  • Berserk Trigger - After the effects wear off, Vincent will suffer from exhaustion, headaches, thirst, hunger and other side effects.
Bio: A life of service that ended in tragedy. A life awaiting vindication. Such is the life of Vincent Valstrad, born in the city of Weisstadt in the Federated Republic of Minerva, the planetary government of the colony world of the same name. The Valstrad family was highly respected in the area due to a long history of military officers, law enforcers and statesmen, and the young Vincent had no desire to get left behind. Since he was a child, he adopted values such as duty, integrity and responsibility, becoming an outstanding son, exemplary student, and model citizen. At the age of eighteen he finished his basic education and immediately signed up for a special program offered by the government of Minerva to study criminal investigations, psychological profiling, interrogation techniques and more with the aid of respected professionals and veteran detectives, with the expectation that those who completed the program would become valuable assets and be hired by the Minerva federal government as detectives in their own right. Naturally, self-defense and weapons training was a part of the program as well.

Participation was costly and the program's standards were extremely high, as this was an important investment on part of the government, but Vincent met all of his examiners' expectations and completed the two-year training program with flying colors, becoming a detective. He was assigned to the Weisstadt Police Department shortly afterwards, and worked diligently for the following four years, driven both by the desire to fulfill his family's expectations and the hope of making his city a better place. The environment in the WPD was extremely professional, with many veteran detectives, but even among them Vincent earned some renown due to the high number of criminals captured.

At the age of twenty-four, things changed. The Twenty Years' War had been raging in the galaxy since he was nine, but as the colony world of Minerva, in the Arcturus system, was neither located at the heart of the Confederation nor on the border with Collective space, the war had been a distant affair for most of Minerva's inhabitants. This changed on the fifteenth year of the war, when the Military Division of the Confederation went on a recruitment drive to Arcturus to bolster their numbers for the war effort. It had been four years since the Confederation had begun cooperating with the Collective in a mass pacification effort throughout the Milky Way, something that was not seen with approval by the general population. Sympathies were low and the recruitment drive was largely unsuccessful, but, fueled by his upbringing, his sense of duty and the burden of a lineage of patriots and heroes, Vincent joined the Military Division, leaving Minerva for the first time in his life.

Vincent was assigned to the 257th Mechanized Division to aid in the pacification of Solano, a rebellious Acux colony in the planet Raenor. A volcanic, seismically active world, Raenor was widely regarded as a death trap, and Vincent lost many people he had come to regard as comrades over the course of his stay in that planet. Due to Solano's inaccessibility and well-placed surface-to-space defensive batteries, the colony was nigh unassailable, and so the 257th set off on a long trek across the planet's surface, fending off predators, hiding from Solanian patrols and trying to survive earthquakes and landslides. Eventually, Vincent and his comrades arrived at the gates of Solano and, in an all-out attack, managed to disable some of the colony's defensive batteries, allowing the arrival of aerial support, but at a great cost. Vincent himself tried and failed to save several of his comrades, and ended up losing his right leg in the battle.

He would wake up days later in a forward medical camp established shortly after the battle, albeit sedated and with a new cybernetic leg, courtesy of the medics. It took a few days for him to be cleared to return to active duty, but the siege of Solano took several months, and the young man became painfully aware not just of the blessing that was peace and the steep costs incurred when it was threatened or broken, but of the sacrifice that dozens of his family's finest men and women had undertaken for the sake of restoring and preserving said peace. With his perspective changed, Vincent returned to the front. At the dawn of the sixteenth year of the war, Solano was pacified, and Raenor was taken back into the fold of the Confederation. Vincent and the other surviving heroes of the 257th were widely applauded, and went on to perform an admirable service throughout the remaining four years of the war, aiding in the pacification and defense of several other planets, though many would go on to say that those four years were nothing compared to that hellish first assignment in February of 2211.

At last, in 2216, the Twenty Years' War came to its conclusion. The Abyss was formed, and those recruited by the Military Division for the war effort were allowed to return to their homes. Vincent, now twenty-nine, returned to Minerva, to Weisstadt, and received a hero's welcome. His family's expectations were fulfilled, and his superiors were more than happy to take him back, giving him his old desk, gun and badge along with a generous raise. Money, however, was the least of his concerns. With the perspective given to him by his time in the war, he seemed to have a newfound drive, and in the following years he carved out a name for himself as one of the most successful detectives in all of Minerva, catching hundreds of hardened criminals including the Butcher of Gladstone Bay, an infamous and terrifyingly prolific serial killer, and several high ranking lieutenants of an organized crime group known as the Black Hats, based out of Hades, in the Abyss.

Eleven years of distinguished service - fifteen, if we count the years before he joined the war effort - would come to a crashing halt soon. In the months preceding the fall, Vincent had been investigating some leads that seemed to point towards corrupt officers in the WPD. The rabbit hole seemed to go deeper than he had initially suspected, and several clues connecting the Black Hats and a captain in the WPD began popping up. Eventually, he was tipped off to a warehouse where a number of evidence regarding the Black Hats' operations in Minerva were to be gathered and disposed of. Calling in several favors from other uniformed officers and detectives, he prepared to raid the place before that happened. However, on the day of the operative, his car was sabotaged, delaying him.

When he finally arrived at the warehouse, the operation was already underway. Esteemed and trusted colleagues were dutifully searching the place for any evidence, but there was someone outside he hadn't contacted. Roman Glastondale, an influential captain in the WPD. Vincent would never forget it, the image of Roman calmly smoking and looking at the warehouse as it suddenly became engulfed in flames, the cries of agony and the calls for help that were completely ignored as he just stood there, with a satisfied smirk on his face, before turning around and pointing a gun at him, reading him his rights and arresting him for the murder of several police officers and for cooperating with a known crime syndicate.

Realizing what was coming, Vincent used the augments he received during his time in the military to escape and find a place to hide. In the following days, his fears were confirmed: a ton of evidence linking him to the Black Hats was produced, going back several years, and several important figures expressed their disappointment in him. Clearly, the Black Hats' influence ran much deeper than he had suspected, and soon a city-wide manhunt was launched. Using what few connections he still had, Vincent procured a ship and escaped Minerva. He knew that he would be unable to set foot in the Arcturus system again, and he didn't know if the Confederation would side with him or with his enemies. Elnoi space was not an option either, which left only one option.

The Abyss.

After a long journey, Vincent, now forty, arrived at the planet of Juniper, in Nebra. It was close to Confederation space, but not so much that he couldn't simply hitch a ride out of there if he found himself risking capture, and the fact that it was populated primarily by humans and other Confederation races meant that it wouldn't be difficult to adjust. With the skills he had learned in the WPD and the 257th, as well as the genetic augments he was given during his time working for the Military Division, he acquired a weapon and began doing freelance work, fending off space pirates and working a private investigator for a living. It wasn't long until he gained some renown and received offers to work on other planets and other systems within the Abyss. Work as a private investigator and private security wasn't the only thing he did, however. With his growing network of connections, he began working to undermine the operations of the Black Hats. Over the years, he managed to dissolve many gangs and drug and slave trafficking rings under their thumb.

His personal war was interrupted, however, when he was approached by a representative of the Confederation with an interesting offer for him. Join Black Star, help deal with the New Age before they became a real threat... and perhaps they could help him clear his name and bring Roman to justice.

With little left to lose and everything to gain, Vincent accepted the offer.
Equipment:
  • SmartShade sunglasses with the capacity to switch between normal vision, night vision, thermal vision and x-ray, record and replay events, and analyze matter. It presents a HUD and can also serve as a communications device.
  • Standard issue Stetson & Klaus sidearm with exactly one bullet left.
  • XenroCraft plasma blunderbuss with multiple energy core capacity.
  • Two ArcTech Arms high caliber pistols with different types of ammunition available.
  • Composite fiber/plate protective vest.
  • Cybernetic leg.
  • An untouched pack of cigarettes and an old badge.

Name: Diego Losada
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 25 ( born 2210)
Appearance: Here
Role: Soldier
Expertise: Shock and awe tactics, heavy weapons usage and maintenance, arctisite combat
Abilities:
  • Arctisite: Reactor Tyrant - Diego's arctisite gives him the ability to transmute any object, animate or not, into a bomb by touching it. The longer he stays in contact the larger the explosion. The explosion must be detonated by touching his thumb to his index finger's middle phalanx. The explosions are only possible if there is air and he can only charge one explosion at a time.
  • Extensive close quarters combat experience
  • Exo-suit operations expertise
Weaknesses:
  • Arctisite: Reactor Tyrant: The longer he charges an explosion the more it drains from him and the less he can do throughout the rest of the day. A sufficiently powerfully charged explosion can even knock him out for several hours and be the only one possible that day.
  • Excessively Cautious - Diego appreciates an extensively well thought out plan with every possibility counted for with a counter measure thought up against it and the most pragmatic options always being top priority. This however leaves him vulnerable to unforeseen or abrupt changes in a scenario and as well is not the most efficient of means of getting things done as compared to thinking on your feet.
  • Hair trigger temper - His greatest shame would come in his easily riled self is quite hot headed, easily frustrated, and being quick to resort to violence. Naturally this comes off as self sabotaging.
Bio: Most of Diego's childhood is quite vague in his memory and only having the slightest idea of what his parents where like and appeared but he does know that he was born somewhere on Earth. The last years of his childhood and teen years would be spent on Mars where he can finally recollect events in detail such as he had moved to live with his grandparents. While he didn't know why or where his parents had gone he did know that he needed to one day found out the reason but his grandparents where of no use as they refused to speak a word on the subject. Frustrated with the possibility of never seeing his parents again and generally not liking his prospects on Mars the next few years in his schooling where rough as he'd constantly get into fights both in and out. His fate however would forever change just shortly after graduation from secondary school where in his mother suddenly appeared on his doorstep. She spilled all that she knew with the revelation that his father was a former ship commander that was sympathetic to the Martian cause of independence and had been an informant until the Siege of Earth had been lifted; afterwards he had tried to lay low with his family but eventually his past caught up to him and he and his family had to flee. Keeping a child with them was too dangerous however so they had no choice but to leave him with his mom's parents.

The revelation was quite shocking and it put him enough in a daze to postpone going to any university as he contemplated going at it alone to find his dad. His first taste of danger would come when he took a job as a night watchmen for a cultured meat plant and on his first month there some saboteurs tried contaminating the vats but he managed to stop the group after a brutal fight. For his efforts he was invited to be personally congratulated by the magnate that owned the plant who seemed quite jovial as he was very eager to pat him on the back nearly enough to knock him over. Strangely enough he was quite amicable with the failed saboteurs too as he even patted them a lot too. The magnate invited Diego to a rooftop observatory for a private talk which he obliged although as he exited the elevator he couldn't help but here a distant bang down below but it was far too muffled to be clearly made out. The magnate was impressed with him and offered him a trial of being his bodyguard in a casual trip to the Abyss wherein if he performed well he could be initiated to be one of his personal guards. Thinking this could help build a connection that would aid in one day finding his dad Diego took the offer.

They where set to go to the Nexus system but along the way when reviewing travel logs he noticed that the ship was going to the Pirate's Bay system. That area's reputation preceded itself but he soldiered on without a word. Arriving on one of the more bustling planets there he kept doing his duty to his employer and he grew increasingly worried as they arrived to some undisclosed estate. His boss showed him around and in particular a garage filled with luxury vehicles and the centerpiece of the area being a Panthera-class Combat Suit. His boss told him to relax and consider himself a guest which struck him as odd but he obliged to take a closer look at the Combat Suit. After he had his fill he went back but just before he arrived he overheard the hushed voice of his boss speaking over to someone on his interface. Chills ran down his spine as he heard how his boss was arranging a hit on a rival on the planet and he was going to use Diego as an unknowing suicide bomber for the hit. He stared as the boss tossed his cigar into a trash bin before pressing his thumb and making it pop into a small explosion which gave him the enlightenment for how that would happen. As his boss laughed his guts out a rage build up within Diego as he rushed into the room and swiped a pen on the desk to stab him the throat. As he calmed down and realized what he had done he looked to se that his boss's computer was still on.

Feverishly scrolling through his ex-boss' contacts, Diego found one that may save him yet. It was a back alley human surgeon apparently specialized in arctisite operations and Diego rushed to the estate's garage and entered the exo-suit before busting out of there with his boss' body in hand. Diego took him to the surgeon and promised him half of the money on his boss's finance card if he transplanted the arctisite from the dying man to him. Not exactly scrupulous at where he got his money the surgeon obliged and agreed to the operation. The process was far more intrusive and abrasive than Diego could have hoped for from how rough the recovery period was but at least he was put under for all of it. For a bit of a larger share the surgeon let him stay to recover his strength for a week at his own lodging. After that time was up he found a derelict building in the slums of the city to stay at and thankfully it was unoccupied.

Now at another crossroads Diego faced a dilemma: either go back to Mars or stick it out here until he found his dad as the myriad worlds of the Abyss where the likeliest of where he could be in hiding. In the end he decided to stay and using the Panthera Combat Suit he made his living acting as a hired guard for many a cause within the Pirate's Bay. However, as the years went by he became disillusioned with finding his father and too ashamed to see his family on Mars again he simply let himself wallow in the violence of his apparent career making many an enemy in the underworld as any who threatened his wards would face the wrath of his electro-baton. His reputation as a brutally efficient problem solver for those who he guarded gained him both respect and revulsion due to his stalwart code and maverick attitude. During a self imposed vacation to a relatively peaceful part of the system, however, he got an offer that involved being part of a unit made to combat that creepy New Age movement and something within him stirred to take the offer as perhaps this could be the opportunity to give himself a new lease on life.

Equipment:
  • Panthera-class Combat Suit - A relatively cheaper alternative to ICS's provides most of the same strengths without the more exotic components of the Indomitus class. Nevertheless, it is capable of withstanding a high variety of stress factors such as small explosions, ramming from light to medium vehicles, and sustained gunfire. Generates enough strength to throw around APC's. Is capable of higher exertions of strength but this runs the risk of overheating the system and draining its energy supply vastly quicker then normal. It has poor stealth capabilities as its mass makes it unwieldly and lacking finesse.
  • Heavy Electro-Baton - a heavy duty mace-like baton that can activate a one time burst of plasma at its tip.
  • K79 Semi-automatic Rifle - a traditional high caliber rifle but appropriately amped up.
  • Olympus Plasma Pistol - a basic plasma pistol smuggled from Elnoi markets in the Abyss.
  • Light Tactical Vehicle - A lightly armored car used for transport and stripped of armaments.
Optional
Likes: Straightforward people, dogs, spicy food, the open skies of Mars
Dislikes: Idealistic people, the grimy and cloudy skies of Tartarus

Name: Nix Aleveni
Species: Cyborg
Gender: Female
Age: 29
Appearance: no armor armor
Role: Soldier
Expertise: Aerial support, sniping, space combat
Abilities : Nanotechnology augmenting her sight and hearing, cybertronic legs allowing her to move around 35 mph on a full sprint, nanobots creating cyber-esque wings, self repairing nanobots to fix her cyborg parts, enhanced reflexes, self shrinking and reverting back to the original size
Weaknesses: While the wings self repair, it isn't instant, so if she's taken down she's grounded and far more vulnerable. Her augmented vision also comes with a weakness, as while it can see in the dark, brought lights blind her, and high pitched sounds disorient her.
Bio: Before Nix, there was a young girl who travelled around in her families gypsy-esque lifestyle. There wasn't really any remarkable about her, or anyone in her family. However, unremarkable lives do not always remain that way, and this one took a turn for the worse when they were traveling through a normally unoccupied valley, when a Collective Battalion came into contact with The Fighter Pack during the cusp of the Twenty Year War.

With the smoke cleared, and the battle was decided, the family's caravan was left in waste and the young girl was barely holding onto life. Which side destroyed it was anyone's guess, but it fell to the Collective victors to decide what to do. A single soldier, not yet a captain, made the call. He would save her.

What followed was nothing more than a miracle of science, as the small, frail child was brought back from the brink of death, and her legs, left arm, a lung, voicebox, and eyes and ears were reconstructed, augmented, sand improved with top of the line cyber technology.

As the years passed, the girl he, and her cybernetics were constantly refitted and upgraded. She received a new name, and was educated to a soldiers level. The soldier who saved her, having never had a proper family, took her in, and the pair made a strange case of cross species father and daughter. They travelled throughout Elnoi space during the time of peace after the 20 year war, though the threat of piracy and gangs in the abyss still called her father away.

When Nix reached adulthood, she joined her father from afar, staying far enough away to rarely be seen and always in some form of armor. With her skill with a rifle and her unique circumstances, it wasn't a surprise when a Collective official approached her, cover-story at the ready, to join Operation: Event Horizon. Due to the lack of records on her, with only a few knowing who she was, a false story was cooked up and she agreed in a heartbeat. To the crew, she was told to be an experimental AI the Collective was sending to accompany then. To the rest of the world and on her records, she was a rogue android, running from her creators and staking a claim in the universe. To herself, she was Nix Aleveni, the dead girl who would free the universe.
Equipment: Titania Armor, a custom made armor that provides protection, allows for solo space flight, and increases her strength and reflexes high enough to take on fast moving aerial opponents.
Translator, for translating.
Nano-med kit, for her human parts.
Confederation Master-class anti-vehicle rifles. Two of them to be dual wielded. Fires tiny orbs that create plasma explosions when they hit their target. Made to breach armor of enemy vehicles and space fighters.

Optional
Likes: the collective, competition, space walks
Dislikes: being cooped up for too long, pacifists, people thinking she has too many emotions or no emotions

Ah, yes, she can permanently die after a bunch of consecutive deaths. The best way to accomplish that would be to airlock her and her power would eventually burn out. Another good way would be a slow acting poison, so that her body doesn't purge it from one of it's more recent "save points." both of which are not outlined in the app. And the bit about all being welcome was fixed.

Four Soldier Roles in a row- boy, this is going to be a trigger-happy ship in a little bit.

Nobody enjoys tinkering with civilian equipment? Well, I guess that means that Tiquo is in very high demand! I won't complain, and neither will he!
I use my NationStates stats, because a population of billions/trillions and an economy of hundreds of trillions is totally viable, trust me.
But seriously, aside from the population and GDP, just assume that my NS stats are roughly accurate.

Support: Paleo-imperialism, conservatism, libertarianism, Christianity.
Against: Stupid people, resistance to industrial progress, alt-right, any form of government at or beyond socialism.

I hail from The League of Conservative Nations. Hearts unthawed, hearts unshaken!

The 'soldier' role could also come with a lot of diversity in the setting I think. So far we've got aerial support, a tech combatant, a not!biotic combatant?

That depends if you think a Navigator is a techie or not...
Most pilots I meet think they are soldiers...just not ground pounders...

Updated the app! Not sure if I went a bit overboard with the 'enhancements' but figured some things would effectively be standard among those rich enough to pay for them. Can remove if that's not the case.

Btw if people are looking for App ideas, support roles like cook, or psychiatrist would be cool things to have :)

Tentative tag for a pilot support character, if we don’t have any of those?

Hey Laz :P

We kind of already have an Acux character signed up as a navigator/pilot, as well as the ship's AI which can presumably do some of it as well (though with the explicit caveat that while it can perform most of the ship's basic functions, an experienced operator will be better at it).

Well, cook/psychiatrist it is then. :p

That second idea sounds interesting, I might make my robot doctor character I'm working on also the ship's psychiatrist.

Throwing this out there for folks still thinking of characters, but does the team have a stealthy archetype yet? Could be useful to have a recon/thief specialist!

Name: Monica Lantrix
Species: Human (Genetically altered)
Gender: Female
Age: 25 - born in 2210
Appearance: 1, 2, 3. Five feet ten inches tall.
Role: Soldier
Expertise: Melee combat, arctisite combat, stealth ops
Abilities:
  • Extensive hand-to-hand combat training and experience
  • Stealth combat and infiltration experience
  • Genetically enhanced senses (sight, hearing, smell), strength, agility and reflexes
  • Symbiotic black coral - When she suffers injury, Monica's body produces a black coral that covers the surface of the wound, closing it, and massively enhances cellular regeneration in the affected area. The coral has a rocky texture and is extremely hard, protecting the area from further damage.
  • Arctisite: Nightmare Epiphany - Monica's arctisite is ancient and powerful, and allows her to coat herself in an unnatural shadowy substance. In addition to making her that much harder to see in dark environments, this substance has the ability to form into solid tendrils and even additional limbs that Monica can control at will. She can also project this substance in short distances - if ingested by another, it causes temporary paralysis.
Weaknesses:
  • No diversity - Monica possesses no skills outside of combat, not even basic ones like cooking.
  • Mistrust - Due to her harsh life and former isolation, she finds it very difficult to open up and place her trust in others.
  • Symbiotic black coral - Though the coral is extremely useful in combat, its generation takes a toll on her metabolism which requires her to increase her intake of calories to compensate. She may suffer from exhaustion if she heals too many injuries in a short time span.
  • Arctisite: Nightmare Epiphany - Though she is able to generate shadow appendages indefinitely, actively controlling more than six at a time will mentally fatigue her. In addition, if they are harmed or destroyed, it will hurt just as much as the real thing.
Bio: A life condemned by the greed and mistakes of others. A life condemned to strife since before it began. Such was Monica's life. She was born in the penal colony of Ananke, in Arcturus, so named because of the ominous message it sent to criminals all across the galaxy. Normally, a child born in these conditions would become a ward of the state and be shipped out of the penal colony in question, but things were different in Ananke. Many local Confederation officers of the Population Management division, which oversaw penal colonies among other things, were corrupt, and far from being concerned with the law and the well-being of the Confederation's citizens, they were concerned by one thing only - profit. That was why a large network of illegal fighting rings had been set up throughout Ananke, with the prisoners fighting to death for the entertainment and economic benefit of their wardens. With all eyes focused on the Abyss and the war that had been ongoing for the last fourteen years, no one was interested in looking at the criminal practices taking place in the periphery of the Confederation.

Monica's parents were second generation inmates who had agreed to be experimented upon in hopes of gaining an edge to help them stay alive in the fighting pits, with the result being generic physical augmentation as well as enhanced senses thanks to the splicing of Acux DNA into their genetic makeup. However, integration did not go as smoothly as their wardens had hoped, and these enhancements were unstable at best. Their daughter was different, however. The alien DNA was perfectly integrated into her genetic structure, giving her the abilities her parents had without as many drawbacks. Her mother didn't live to hold her and her father had died months before, so she was taken in by one of the scientists in charge of modifying the inmates, so that he could analyze her and, if possible, further improve her.

And improve her he did. From the tender age of six - at the end of the Twenty Years' War, incidentally - she was forced into a strict training regime and thrown into the pits with other children with some regularity in order to test her capabilities and her development. She lashed out at the others with the same brutality with which the world had treated her, proving herself to be a cut above the other prospective fighters and pleasing her masters. At the same time, further research into her genetic code revealed that she was compatible with a certain species of coral unique to the seas of Ananke, which had been discovered to possess incredible regenerative properties. Without having any say in it, she was subjected to an experimental procedure that combined her DNA with that of the black coral. The result was a combatant that could rapidly recover from any wound.

A myriad of possibilities opened up for Monica's masters, who immediately put her under the care of one of Ananke's top combatants, a swordmaster by the name of Masao, to train her. She was thrown into the fighting pits, this time against real opponents, far older and more experienced than her - and not without augments of their own - and managed to overcome them each time, gaining renown among the corrupt officers and crime lords of the Red Comet Syndicate that watched and bet on the fights. Her swordplay and physical aptitude improved in leaps and bounds, and she soon became one of Ananke's best fighters in spite of her youth, rivaling even her master Masao. This cycle of violence and brutality would continue well into her teenage years.

At the age of sixteen, ten years after the procedure that made her an unstoppable combatant and ten years after the end of the Twenty Years' War, Monica participated in a mass mutiny organized by rebels from the Abyss who had a bone to pick with the Red Comet Syndicate that backed the corrupt Confederation officers in charge. At exactly solar noon, an army of inmates and brawlers all across the planet turned on their wardens. The result was thousands of deaths between inmates, armed guards, supporting rebels, visiting civilians and administrators of the colony. The incident would be known as one of the bloodiest since the Twenty Years' War, rivaling the Sol Rebellion and the Pacification of Solano. In the end, a battalion of the Confederation' Military Division arrived to quell the uprising, tend to the survivors and investigate the incident. But not before several ships full of escaped gladiators and slaves fled towards the Abyss.

The sweet taste of freedom was welcome at first, yet brought with it a certain dread. Monica was nearly an adult now, and she had nothing to show for it. During all of her life she had people ordering her what to do, a clear enemy to fight, and no need to worry about anything else. Now she had no one to obey, no one to fight, and moreover, no one to ensure that she had food, drink and a room to sleep in. She soon realized that both freedom and peace were both completely alien to her, and she took to wandering aimlessly across the worlds of the Nebra system where she had arrived. One day, however, the town she was in was attacked by space pirates looking for new slaves to sell. Using the abilities she had gained in Ananke, she wiped out the pirate crew with brutal efficiency. As it turned out, there had been a bounty on their heads, and thus, she received the reward in full, a reward that she traded for hot food and a warm bed to sleep in.

Peace was something she would never get used to. But freedom, freedom she decided she might yet understand.

Not long after her first great success, a middling aristocrat from Sigma extended to her a particular offer: take out a political adversary in exchange for a large sum of money and a place closer to the throbbing heart of the Abyss. Without any morals to get in the way, she accepted and carried out her mission with no issue. This marked the beginning of her career as the Black Rose, an infamous assassin: more and more men and women from Sigma, Apex, Cat's Cradle and even Pirate's Bay began requesting her services. Her meteoric rise through the Abyss underworld did not go unnoticed by the big players however, and one day six years after she had first arrived in the Abyss, she was approached by a group of heavily armed gangsters wearing black fedoras. She was given two options: kidnap infamous Apex warlord Kalmar and bring him back to have his arctisite extracted... or die.

With little choice and unwilling to risk it against such a heavily armed squadron, Monica set off towards Apex. Infiltrating Quaret high society was a challenge, and escaping with the warlord in tow was even worse, but the kidnapping itself went without a hitch - the imposing Quaret warlord had no idea she was even there when a swift blow to the back of the head put him down before he could defend himself. She barely escaped from the war-torn world of Kandolla with her life and her target, and eventually made it back to Sigma, to the planet Aldrin, where she delivered Kalmar to a clandestine laboratory controlled by the same men who had threatened her, where they would remove his arctisite to take it for themselves. Kalmar was the fourth generation host of his arctisite, making it an ancient and extremely lucrative piece.

Of course, she had no intention of letting the men that had threatened her off the hook. That night, everyone in the laboratory was killed, and both the Black Rose and the arctisite disappeared. Monica resurfaced days later in the slums of Hades, calling in a favor with an unlicensed doctor that owed her big. With extreme care, he integrated the arctisite into her brain stem, making her the arctisite's fifth generation host and granting her incredible powers. Powers that would become vital in the following years, as the lone assassin began waging war on the Black Hat while simultaneously watching out for the Quarets of the Red Comet Syndicate. Despite the fearsome reputation that preceded her, Monica found herself falling on hard times. With both the Red Comet Syndicate and the Black Hats against her, she was forced to move out of Sigma, and few still willingly conducted business with her. This all came to a head when a small time assassination job went awry. Unbeknownst to her, her target knew of the bounty and had hired a veteran of the Twenty Years' War and former detective as his bodyguard. She was caught off-guard, and several impacts of his plasma blunderbuss were all it took to defeat her, the grievous burns across her body rapidly healing at the cost of leaving her exhausted.

Instead of killing her, however, the man cared for her while she recovered. Puzzled by this, she suppressed the urge to murder him and escape, and the two began talking and exchanging stories. Whereas she had always watched out for herself because nobody else would, he had always placed others before himself, simply because it had to be done. Over the course of several days, they bonded over their status as outcasts, their vendetta against the Black Hats and their sympathy for each other's trials. Eventually, he offered her a job with him, a chance to have someone watching her back and do some good instead of profiting off of others' misery, and she accepted. Now twenty-two years old, Monica turned over a new leaf.

Three years have passed since then, with Vincent and the Black Rose working together to take down the Black Hats and make the Abyss a better place, one job at a time. Of course, when he received an offer to join Black Star, she received one as well. After all, though reformed, she was still one of the deadliest fighters in the Abyss. Their promise to help her partner and put the hurt on a high ranking member of the Black Hats in Minerva was more than enough for her, and she accepted the offer to join the crew.
Equipment:
  • Six steel-hescilite alloy Shinzo katanas with VibroEdge technology
  • Steel throwing knives, some of which carry an explosive charge.
  • A string necklace adorned with bone and black coral fragments.

Just a question, how do you wield more than two Katana for a human? A quad might say four but six?
