The Plague Rats (OOC/Dead)

Postby Ceystile » Thu Dec 03, 2020 3:37 am

The RPs I’m currently in right now have either all been slow or stopped, and there haven’t been any new ones in a while so I’ve decided to take a crack at making one.

“Death doesn’t discriminate, against the sinners or the saints, it takes and it takes and it takes.”
- Aaron Burr, Hamilton the Musical.

1349
Turin, Italy

The once proud city has now been ravaged by plague. The once bustling streets now devoid of music, or color, or light. Bodies pile up in the streets, desperate sinners cry out to God whipping themselves as they beg the Almighty to deliver their wretched souls from this hell on earth. The Black Death they call it...and they couldn’t be any more right.

Unfortunately along with the buboes and boiling fever, there is another unforeseen symptom of this ghastly plague. The bodies tended to...rise upon death, as if possessed. Corpses thought long buried have been reported to have come back to life in order to terrorize their neighbors, reports that have gone unbelieved until the Church sent out their own men to investigate these happenings. The dead couldn’t come back to life...could they? But rise they did, and as more of them rose it seemed that the mighty peninsula of Italy would surely fall. But, there are two tiny glimmers of light even in the midst of this darkness.

Les Dottores della Peste, the Plague Doctors are the country’s, and perhaps all of Europe’s last line of defense. Men and women of science, who have devoted themselves to the core tenants of medicine, the last bastion of hope against the ravages of illness.

The Catholic Church, God’s own purveyors of judgement on Earth do their own defending of the people against the zombie horde, by burning or consecrating bodies upon death...or using holy weapons against those that could not be prevented from rising. The Church and the doctors have always had an uneasy relationship, some priests believing the very new art of modern science to be blasphemous (some would even say witchcraft) and some physicians believing religion to be an utter crock of hypocrisy (“using magic holy weapons isn’t witchcraft, but medicine is?”), they’ve often viewed the other with suspicion and fear but they are now being forced to put aside their differences against something much larger than themselves.

The Grand Duke of Turin, Guiliano Agnelli has called a truce between the Church and his own Doctor’s Guild in the wake of the outbreak. You are either a servant of the true Roman Church standing between the people of Italy and the plague-ridden undead, or you are one of the doctors under the Duke’s charge tasked with finding a cure for this terrible disease. There’s been a headway into research that suggests that infected rats may be a possible transmission source.

You can devote yourself to the cause of medicine or God (perhaps both, they’re not mutually exclusive) and do everything you can to save your people, or you can con them out of what little coin they have in order to line your own pockets. Or maybe, you use the healer’s mask or the priest’s cowl as a guise to bring death at the point of a sword and cross, syringe or scalpel...the choice is yours

So this is an alternate, low-fantasy version of Black Death era Italy, something different from the usual fantasies I like to do. The conflict is less “dragons vs fairies” and more “religion vs science” and “man vs nature”. It’s not gonna be the most historically accurate (though things will be fairly accurate),, the doctors have a tiny bit of an idea about the germ theory of disease but they’re just starting to make headway into that.

Classic rules: Keep OOC in the OOC, respect the OP, any co-ops and each other, I honestly could care less if you swear like a sailor but if you wanna get hot and heavy, keep it classy folks since I ain’t tryna get my thread banned. IC posts will preferably be at least a paragraph long.

Character App
Name: Filippa Gennuso
Age: 25
Appearance: Image
Gender: Female
Bio: Born in Turin, Ludovica Filippa di Gennuso was the daughter of a prostitute...her father is unknown, but is said to be one of the local noblemen. Her mother, Anna Gennuso wanted more for her daughter than she had and did her best to raise her despite her limited means. Growing up in a brothel, she saw the discrepancy between how the “worthy” and “unworthy” were treated. Despite her hardships, she would look back on her childhood with fondness. “The ladies were always good to me, the madam was educated...she taught me how to read and write and do sums by keeping track of the business expenses.” In instances like these, the phrase ‘it takes a village’ is taken way more seriously.

Whenever clients would come, the children were always hidden or sent away, especially girl children for their own safety and it was during these times that Filippa would come to know what she wanted to do. People would fall sick in the poorer parts of town, and unfortunately the higher-ups didn’t seem to care much about their plight as they died from diseases the rich didn’t seem to, and twelve years old Filippa decided that one day, she wanted to become a doctor. She’d wander the streets and sneak into libraries, reading books on anatomy, medicine and herbs where she could find them...being sent out to buy bread, she ran into who was possibly the first positive male figure in her life...Dr. Henry Beauchamp. A French physician studying abroad in Italy, he took an interest in the bright young girl as they chatted each other up at the bread stand. Once she heard about his profession, she begged him to take her on as an apprentice...he chuckled and told her to come back after a few years, as she was still very young. Needless to say, she did indeed come back when she was sixteen.

Dr. Beauchamp decided to take her on then as his apprentice, and she studied under him until she turned twenty-two, after which she went to go found her own practice. A lot of physicians would move to Florence or the ducal residences to treat the wealthy, but she set up her clinic a few blocks away from the brothel she was raised in, so they could come to her for treatment. She wanted to help anyone who asked for it, regardless of whether they could pay or not so oftentimes she was paid in food or goods when her patients had no coin. It was gritty work, but she felt that this is what she was called to do. When the plague swept through her town, she joined her fellow doctors’ efforts to find and research a cure, even if it meant working with the Church to do so. It was through these uneasy dealings that she met Enrico Vecchione, a young and brash priest-in-training for the church militant. They rubbed each other the wrong way at first, but through working together they actually started to become friends...and something a bit more, although the relationship is a well-kept secret due to priests having to be celibate (even though Enrico is still in seminary and has not taken his vows yet, this could be disastrous for his ordination) so they keep a professional front in public and often work together in their mutual pursuit of stopping this plague.

Personality: Definitely introverted. Fili tends to be shier, that with her nerd brain can make her quite awkward in social situations and tends to keep to her small circle of friends. She’s taciturn with a famously dry wit and hates complicity in people. “If the government won’t take care of the people, I’ll do it myself.” Logical, pragmatic, and compassionate, she oftentimes is stubborn to the point where know when to quit, sometimes misses the forest for the trees, focuses on the bigger picture to the point where she shrugs off the details, exhausting herself, missing out on life.

Equipment: A black bag filled with various medical implements, surgical tools, medicines, bandages...her plague doctor’s mask to protect from airborne infection, and a dagger coated in blessed silver (a gift from Rico).
Goals: To find a cure for the plague and set up a larger practice in which more people can be helped. She doesn’t hold out hope that she and Enrico would marry, but maybe one day they can be together a bit more openly.

Personal beliefs: She believes in God but isn’t religious, if that makes sense. She has a pragmatic view of religion and thinks that in a way, God IS science (because surely no god wants their children living in ignorance) and that science and religion aren’t incompatible with each other.
Sexual orientation (optional): Heterosexual

Character App
Name: Enrico Vecchione
Age: 22
Appearance: (blue eyes) Image
Gender: Male

Bio: Enrico was born to Alessandro and Isabella Vecchione, a pair of farmers in the Tuscan countryside. Their orchard supplied vegetables and fruit for many in the village, and they were able to make a modestly comfortable living off of their holdings. Growing up, Rico (as he was affectionately called by family and friends) was taught the value of hard work, his father especially was a proud man who drilled into his son the importance of standing up for yourself, having made it out of serfdom and making a place for himself, he didn’t want his children to be stepped on and taken advantage of by the nobility: “Get on your knees for no one but God, my son”, and that lesson would stick with him for the rest of his life.

His childhood was a happy one, growing up with his two brothers and sister. As the eldest, Enrico was fully expected to inherit the family’s estate one day, and his father groomed him for such a task...however, his happy childhood would be shattered when he turned fourteen. His father was killed during a land dispute, a rich Conde wished to buy the family farm from Enrico’s father, but Alessandro had refused, stating that it was his children’s inheritance. The count became outraged, and threatened to come back with soldiers unless Alessandro gave in. He then attempted to chase the man off of his land, but the count pulled out his pistol and shot him dead. The murder of his father caused an irreparable change in Enrico’s psyche, and the once quiet and soft-spoken young boy was soon in a bad way.

The count then stole their farm and the family was reduced to mere servants on their own land. into the position as head of the family all too early, something inside Enrico snapped. He became wild and seemed to spiral down, he started turning to stolen alcohol in order to deal with his grief, and his mother seemed helpless as to what to do. He joined a group of boys who’d formed a small street gang, and started to go around committing petty crimes. He wanted to watch the world burn the way his world was burning, all the while his mind was on one thing and one thing only...vengeance. He wished to become strong enough to take back his family’s holdings, and kill the count who’d destroyed his life.

A year later, Enrico saw his chance. He and a couple of his friends and gotten a hold of a small cache of weapons stolen from a group of soldiers, and he managed to convince them to help him stage an attack on the Count’s settlement. Under the cover of darkness, they managed to sneak into the homestead, but the count was ready for them. Tussling with the man, they managed to wound one another, while some of Enrico’s frightened friends ran to make their escape when the count summoned his men. Enrico was overwhelmed and nearly killed, outnumbered he had no choice but to flee. The count sent his men after him, and the young man managed to make it into town and take refuge in a local church. What struck him was that when the count’s men shot at him, the bullets didn’t seem to even make a dent in the plain wooden doors, or the old glass windows...there was nothing special about them, they were ordinary materials, so why was this happening? Was God protecting him? The count soon ordered his men to retreat, the vicious man was also superstitiously religious and didn’t want to risk incurring divine wrath upon himself by violating a holy place.

The priest on duty, Bishop Giorgio Solazzo heard the commotion and immediately went to go aid the frightened teenager. As Enrico was being patched up while a medic was sent for, he was angry and had a wall up. A wall that Bishop Solazzo gently wore down over the course of a couple of weeks, and finally one night he broke down in tears, told the bishop his story and why he was hiding there. During the time he spent in the church, Enrico was convinced that God had intervened to save his life...and the Bishop’s kindness, it reminded him so much of the kindness of his father. He couldn’t return home as the count’s men were still looking for him, and so he decided to join the priesthood, believing he owed his life to God. At twenty, he immediately wished to go into the Church Militant, as he had not lost his desire to fight. This way, he could protect the weak and the helpless the way his father had tried to protect him. After receiving assurance from the church that his family would be taken care of, he went into the armed wing of the Roman church, protecting Italy against supernatural and heretical threats while also performing his normal duties as a priest. He has not yet finished seminary as it has not yet been nine years, so he still has not taken the full orders...that doesn’t quite stop him from acting like it though.

When the plague broke out, and evidence of the plague zombies was confirmed, Enrico and his section were immediately dispatched to Turin to deal with the threat. When the Church announced their truce with the Doctor’s guild, he found it distasteful. Why work with people who would shun God and worship the “sciences”, they were heretics weren’t they? But he agreed to do it as the people needed his help. During this time, he met with one Doctor Filippa Gennuso, a woman who was far too pragmatic for his liking. She claimed to be a believer, but was willing to push aside religious convictions in the name of furthering the search for a cure, and she was irritated by his dogmatism and “lack of realism.” But as circumstances forced them together, they were forced to work with one another...over time, they began to see the merit in each other’s views, at least a little bit. On one mission they had together, Filippa risked her own life to patch up a wounded comrade even though it resulted in her capture and him having to rescue her. They found themselves impressed with each other’s bravery and started to get along a bit better, eventually becoming friends. Somewhere along the line, the relationship deepened...and while he’s technically not breaking the rules since he has not yet taken his full vows, he often finds himself torn between his caring for Filippa and his call to the church.

Personality: Enrico is a staunch and loyal Catholic, faithful to his cause of defending the Church and the people of Italy...sometimes, this belief can border on dogmatic. He’s a militant knight who won’t hesitate to lay down his life for his God and his country, and he is very strong-willed. Deep inside, he still carries the pain from his father’s death and almost all the events in his life are influenced by that pain. He tends to do things in extremes, he went from wanting to watch the world burn to wanting to stop people from hurting the way he hurts, often using any measures necessary to accomplish his goals. Because of those events, he harbors a strong mistrust for the nobility, believing they don’t care for anyone but themselves.

He does have a compassionate side, and his ultimate goal is to serve God and his country by helping people. It takes a long time for anyone outside of the church to gain his trust, but once his loyalty is earned he will be one of the most faithful companions you can ever have and he will give his all for the people and things he deems important.

Equipment: His rosary and his primary weapon, a rapier plated with blessed silver. He also has a pair of consecrated knives, a pistol with blessed rounds and a flask of holy water..

Goals: To serve God and the church, to reconcile his love for both Filippa and his mission, and he still wishes to exact revenge upon the count who stole his father from him.

This is actually an idea I would come up with. I may apply.
For really, I think that the poorest he that is in England hath a life to live as the greatest he. And therefore truly, Sir, I think it's clear that every man that is to live under a Government ought first by his own consent to put himself under that Government. And I do think that the poorest man in England is not at all bound in a strict sense to that Government that he hath not had a voice to put himself under.
