Behold, they clap the slave on the back, and behold, he ariseth a man!
~Rudyard Kipling
At the Allanean campThose men and women who escaped slavery in Candabaumie to Allanean lines would have, of course, to undergo some security checks, to make sure they were not in fact slaver infiltrators – a brief questioning, a longer questioning for those deemed more suspicious. By and large, however, the thousands of people who were now making it to Allanean lines were clearly former slaves. Their bodies bore the tell-tale evidence of years of abuse – scarring where shackles had been worn, the traces of whips and the marks of cigarette burns. For those who underwent medical examinations, sometimes worse could be found – the traces of bone broken and healed again multiple times, the sad emblems of years of abuse in childhood. There were also subtler traces – the look of fatigue and despair, the way some of them shrank away when an Allanean soldier raised their voice.
The doctors and soldiers did not hold any of this against the escapees, or at least they tried not to. They knew that these were the marks of generations of humiliation and dread, and they pitied the people who were now looking for them for protection and assistance.
Upon the escapees arrival, they were all given the opportunity to rest – in large tents, just like the ones the soldiers slept in, or in buildings in the city if any buildings could be secured intact. The tents – like any Allanean military tent – would be air conditioned, and the former slaves would be given the same food that Allanean soldiers were given – perhaps not always the tastiest, but highly nutritious and plentiful. As desert, they would be served a variety of simple, yet calorie-rich sweets – condensed milk from blue-and-white cans, chocolate paste, or apple sauce. Tea and coffee were poured out in large quantities from enormous, dark-green cans that had only the name in common with kettles.
Those who wanted, could be sent to Allanea by the next airlift. For those who wished to stay and fight against their oppressors, a different opportunity was given. After three days of rest, these men and women would be given new clothing, new boots, and new weapons – some of them Allanean in make, some of them local, picked up from dead slave-catchers and soldiers. Each would be given a large bag full of all manner of gear, from blankets to knives.
The first of these men and women, several hundred in number, were then taken to a large warehouse and assembled within. They were addressed by an Allanean Colonel, who spoke to them in their language.
Ladies and gentlemen!
I welcome you to our ranks.
All of you have known suffering, privation, humiliation and oppression such as few of us Freemen have ever endured. Some of you have never known any other life but that where a man's boot would be on your face. Even those of you who were tormented less than others knew, at all times, that you were in a position of weakness, that your so-called masters could at any point trade kindness for cruelty. I am not able to rightfully comprehend or imagine what that life must have been like.
I cannot promise that from now on you will never know want. Indeed, as you venture forward for weeks and perhaps months of violence it is likely that you will know want, and privation, and grief. Many of the people in this room will die. This is why we have asked for volunteers. We cannot ask those who have endured already so much to endure more.
But I tell you this. It is one thing to be injured or hurt by a monster who holds you in their power, who trains your soul to be weaker, who teaches you to accept fear as your natural lot. And it is another to be killed or injured in battle when you are bringing retribution to the ones who would seek to chain you, and liberty to your friends and kin.
The whole idea of slavery is about violence and threats. The whole principle is that the slaver threatens their victims – either explicitly or implicitly – with violence to accept their orders and do their bidding, and uses fear to mold them to his desires. Which is why slavers spend their lives being afraid of slave uprisings. This is why they take so many precautions against that frightening idea, that the violence they use on others will be turned against them.
In other words: though for years and generations the slavers have taught you to fear them, the truth is that in their deepest and darkest hearts they are afraid of you. They fear that one day you will acquire strength, and you will come for them.
This is why we have given you weapons. This is why we will train you. This is why we will assist you.
Place your hands on your weapons. Drink in that knowledge. Drink in that strength.
Know now that you are armed and you are free – and that you are the slaver's worst nightmare.
It is not Allaneans, nor Lyrans, nor Marshites that the slaver fears most.
Deep in the most hollow, cowardly, cave of his soul what he fears most is you – people who shake off centuries of oppression to become strong, and free, and angry.
That is what is what you will bring to the slaver's home! Panic and fear! Taste it now, smell it – the smell of the slaver's fear. That is what you will have in the coming days. That is what you are now! Not slaves, not refugees, not escapees – you are fear incarnate! Panic and fear!
He raised his rifle into the air, and so did hundreds who had just been slaves. He chanted, and the crowd responded.
Daimos kai Phobos! Daimos kai Phobos! Daimos kai Phobos!
[Greek - ~ Panic and fear, or alternately 'terror and dread']

Meanwhile, Langenian forces assemble in the south of Hopal, in the new Langenian land, in preparation for a strike on the Paisacratan tribe responsible for the kidnapping and enslavement of Langenian scientists. Recon drone flights over the area have spotted the scientists in servitude to a local tribe, the Yuiktl. A rescue operation will be mounted if diplomacy fails. Also, the Langenians plan to free all slaves the Yuiktl have in servitude to them.

A few choose to join them, but most don't. They still want to be free.

a. What infrastructure do the various Candabaumie slaver groups have intact? I know we posted a lot about the tanks and aircraft being bombed (and I think almost entirely destroyed) and some of the power plants as well. But I would like to know more about the state of the oil processing industry (if any), the remaining power processing industry (if any), and the metal processing industry (if any).
To be clear what I would like to know is how much of this stuff exists and what is its technology level/ what condition it is in.
b. How many major harbors do the slavers have under their control at this point and how well developed are they?

Some more questions if I may...
a. When we're talking MT, are we talking like fully modern MT like you'd have in a modern Western country or a somewhat less current MT? Like, the US, China, and Paraguay are all MT countries but...
b. What is the climate like, and what season is it currently in Candabaumie? (winter? summer? )

Allanea wrote:The Allaneans prepared their next operation with caution. Those who would be foolish among the enemy would think the Allaneans to be cowardly, hiding behind their trench lines and not assaulting into their territory. Patrols were minimized, only performed in the areas where the patrols had easy overhead cover from drones and helicopters. But behind the lines, preparations were made. Trajectories were planned for missiles. Weapons would be shipped in to the strategic bomber bases in Romextly, and the crews of the ships and bombers waited for the fateful day.
At last, the Allaneans gave their enemies one final chance, with one final message broadcast over the local radio networks:
Greetings, slavers.
I, General Aubrey Hamington, speak to you now, though you deserve not the sound of my voice.
Over the past weeks you have seen the way Allaneans act and speak. You have seen that our kindness to those who seek it is genuine. So too is our anger.
Yet you sought, in your actions, to place yourself beyond the reach of all compassion. You have chosen not merely to defend slavery – an act that would be natural, though evil – but to defend it even at the cost of murdering all your victims lest they go free. You have chosen to turn all your citizens into soldiers – thus turning them into potential military targets. You have chosen to dig your grave deeper and deeper and respond to every offer of peace and kindness with new outbursts of brutality.
I hold at my command devastating aerial, naval, and ground firepower. Satellites are watching your every move. You, on the other hand, hold nothing. Your tanks have been turned into scrap metal. Your aircraft smolder on their runways. And yet I am coming to you, and I beg you, once again – accept peace. You have seen already that we do not deceive. Those who seek our friendship see it granted generously.
I am General Aubrey Hamington, and for one final time I beseech you all. Accept, now, our offer of peace, liberty, and friendship. Reject it now, and you will not even have the radio connections to beg for mercy over. This is our last offer. Peace, liberty and friendship in one hand – awful suffering and death in the other. But the peace and friendship can only come with liberty.
That is all. You have twenty-four hours to decide.
