The Valanora Footballing Association proudly presents the forty-eighth edition of the Di Bradini Cup, the seventeenth edition of which to be held in the Valanora. Recognized as direct successor to the original Under-21 World Cup run by Total n Utter Insanity, this is also the 70th Under-21 World Cup.

This tournament is named after Starblaydia's most-famous player, the first person to score for Starblaydia's own Under-21s, currently the fifth-highest goalscorer in Starblaydia's history, World Cup Winner, member of the World Cup Hall of Fame and one-time President of the World Cup Committee: Simeone Di Bradini. The most important thing to know about traveling through Valanora is that automobiles are banned except for government officials. A high tech railway system connects the entirety of the nation, with three most popular international airports in Raynor City, Gladerial, and Baysleef. A ferry from Rinaldi travels to and from the island of Capri every hour on the hour. The most distinguishing feature of Valanora is the prevalent amount of forests standing in many of the inner half of the nation, even in cities, with the elven attempts to live in harmony with nature. Vanorians are a polite if not a bit high on themselves, believing elvenkind to be superior to humans, though they show a respect for the potential their humanoid cousins have.

The Incorporated Football Federation and Hanifer both loved the energy and enthusiasm he brought to his interview to be the Stars Under 21 manager. Even though he originally lost out on the role to now Stars assistant manager Nathan Hanifer, he was happy to accept the assistant manager role under Hanifer. He takes over as full-time manager now.

A reserve sweeper for the Stars, Arroyo starts for Real Portsmouth in that position after converting from fullback. Notched three assists in 12 matches.

Mabry earned a starting position with the Wild Reserves after initially making the parent side out of training camp. However, the Wild engineered a trade that brought them an all star defender who took minutes away from Mabry.
44 Pat Meyers, 21, 5-foot-8, 152 pounds, unaffiliated
Meyers won a lawsuit against the Portland Timbers third division affiliate when the team dismissed them after successfully proving the club released them due to their gender non-conforming status. The technical director responsible for the decision was fired two weeks after the verdict. Meyers plays mostly halfback but can also pitch in at fullback if necessary.

Campbell comes to the Under 21 edition of the Stars at the recommendation of Kemp. He brings size and strength to attacking runs that also present deceptive speed and on-ball skills.

Joanie signed a contract with the Justice right after high school after leading her scholastic league with 18 goals in 12 matches played. Her speed is unmatched at her level, but she needs to learn to adapt to equally fast players at the international level.

Royce earned a starting job with the Snakes as a midfielder and scored seven goals in 18 matches before injuries derailed him.

After much deliberation, the choice for a manager fell to Ernesto Siboni, a veteran from the Catrallo youth academy. Due to or despite, pending on the observer, his sometimes confrontational style, he is known to bring the best out of his pupils Although being harsh to them in the dressing room, he will shield them towards the audience as long as they have worked hard.

And hard work will be needed to pull off the tactical plan with the limited means available. In all fairness, this is no golden generation for San Ortelian football so far but there is a well-rounded first eleven available. Siboni tries to bring a 4-2-2-2 to the pitch with the spot between the stakes saved for Virtus reserve goalie Walter Moro: an unspectacular but, especially for his age, consistent performer. Young prodigy Dolci is a slightly surprising back-up. Bringing a 16-year old in such a crucial position highlights the lack of depth.

The back four is shored up by some names who already have a decent number of Serie Nazionale games under their belt. The two guys on the wing are expected to push forward when the attacking midfield moves in the pocket and both should be able to do so. Gagliano possesses speed but tends to be a bit rash at times whilst captain Moreschini is far shrewder than a kid his age is supposed to be. The tall Crilese takes care of the center with Valerio Cattai, a more technically apt profile, by his side. A fine starting four which will hopefully last as the second string don’t match the level.

The midfield, and indeed the whole ploy, hinges on the defensive duo. When defenders move forth, they should pick up spaces and ensure the balance in the team. Domenico Cappa is the perfect man for that if he keeps his head together: he’s prone to cards for forgetting to keep his mouth shut. His buddy Quintarelli looks set for a career as a grizzled midfielder despite being only 19 yet and managed to keep the better-known Tornaghi off the starting line-up. Offensive initiatives should come from Davide Trillo, a lanky dribbler who likes to come off the wing. As Cadili is the same profile, we expect to see Alberto Sgarbi start, a pocket rocket with a decent shot on goal.

Especially as scoring goals relies on one man only, it seems. Denis Spaviero is a small sensation in the league, making a name for himself as a clever supersub on team level. He hopes to confirm his splendid production in that position as a national team starter. It was a long search for a decent partner-in-crime: young strikers struggle to break through in San Ortelio and often fall to the amateur level where they can make a bit of cash per goal. As such, the choice fell on Niccolo Galli, a static targetman from relegation candidate SSD, and a neath little talent called Pier Luigi Vitali. The latter already carries a bit of a reputation, both on and off the pitch, for his right foot and his carelessness.

Græntfjall has not previously had an under-21 football team and had to build one from scratch. Knattspyrnusamband Græntfjalls wanted a martinet, someone who’d drum discipline into young players; a common feature of Græntfjaller youth teams in both football and ice hockey has been a struggle to adapt to stricter international rules and officiation. Sopo Chacuzca, bulldozing former midfielder for Tequilo’s army team, El Ejército, seemed the perfect fit. He had experience as a head coach with Coyotes, Irregulares Quetodino, and then Haïtiens, leading them out of the second division. But winning promotion by the play-offs wasn’t successful enough for multibillion peso corporation Grupo Taxhavn, so he found himself out of a job – and available to take up the Græntfjaller job. It helped that a couple of Græntfjaller youngsters have had some success in the Liga-TQ’s youth system.

What KG got was not quite the strict disciplinarian they’d been expecting. Chalk it up to communication barriers or just not doing their research, but until Chacuzca arrived, no one realized quite what a maverick he was, ready to give the dull piñata of staid, conservative Græntfjaller footballing orthodoxy, with its heavy reliance on physical domination in the center of defence and dependence on set-piece goals, a sturdy “whack!”. What Chacuzca found upon taking up the role was that central midfielders were vastly overrepresented among Græntfjaller youth talents. This is because of traditional coaching methods that aimed to produce all-round players, and the country’s shallow talent pools that means players who might, in other countries, be forced into more specialist roles, are frequently earning starting jobs. The situation could be compared to how, in other countries, athletes who end up playing other positions at senior level might, in high school, be quarterback, shortstop, or first five-eighths.

Encouraged by most Græntfjaller players having excellent fitness levels, and rather than leave talented players out of his squad and fill in the positional depth charts with weaker specialists, Chacuzca, always one to experiment with tactical innovation, decided to pick on a “best player available” basis. A couple of center backs and forwards made the cut, and he made sure to pick a goalkeeper, but the majority of the rest were central midfielders. In fact, he’s taking eleven central midfielders to the Cup as part of his squad. Not all of those players will necessarily have a future in the role: some might end up being converted into center backs or wings. But for now, all proudly wear the 7 on their back – necessitating some slight experimentation with uniform numbering.

Chacuzca will start out with a default 2 – 7 – 1 set-up. Ahead of two prototypical center backs and behind a lone striker, seven central midfielders will rotate in a “Total Football” style, filling every position from box to box, sideline to sideline. They will not have designated positions or roles, although some, based on the relative strength of their feet or their natural work rates, may trend towards filling some roles more often than others. The team will press hard and employ zonal rather than person-to-person marking, meaning opposition players will find their marker constantly switching off them. This system of football is called “Futbol Ouroboros”: once a player in, say, the right midfield slot brings the ball forward, another player will enter that zone, while the former right midfielder will move to fill in that player’s old zone once they’ve released the ball.

The bench offers Chacuzca a few options. There are back-ups for the backs and forwards, and of course fresh reserves of yet more central midfielders to bring on. In the event more structured width is required, he will bring on two wide midfielders who will play in wingback roles, covering their respective sidelines. One of the center backs will be taken off. This will leave six central midfielders, in what is known as “The Methane Formation”. Finally, in the event of the team having a safe lead – and thus wishing to protect his more specialist players – or surrendering a desperate deficit – necessitating pushing the emergency button – Chacuzca will sub off all three non-CMs and switch to a 0 – 10 – 0 “Ozymandias” formation.

Hugo Svanbergursson has been appointed to stand on the sidelines watching the horror show unfold and take over in the not unlikely event of it all collapsing in on itself.

Squad: A 23-person squad has been named for the tournament. The players listed in bold are the most likely starting 11, but any of the halves could start on any given day.

The Græntfjaller Premier League is gender-mixed and it is seen as uncontroversial for men and women to play alongside each other. If you find this unrealistic you are welcome to RP surprised reaction [although given the general state of NS Sports it would surely be not too much of an outlier] but it won’t be something we dwell on. -son surnames are men, -dóttir women, -bur gender-neutral (Ari is the first gender-neutral athlete to represent Græntfjall in international sport; their pronouns are they/them/their).
Football is only just becoming a millionaire’s game in Græntfjall, and then only at the top. Players earn a decent wage in the GPL but rarely more than that; the most expensive foreign transfer signings have been low seven figures NS$. For young players, this means they are generally not paid as much as young players from other nations might be at this age. However, most are in starting roles rather than playing in youth squads.
Græntfjaller players have high levels of athleticism and fitness, but skill levels are a bit more mixed. This squad is more skillful than usual on account of the unusual formation, but the center backs are typical BFGs and the strikers pretty much just limited to trying to score tap-ins.
Græntfjall does not normally appoint a designated captain, instead following a tradition of having the starting XI elect their own captain. At this tournament, Björnólfur, as the only guaranteed member of the starting XI, will wear the captain’s armband, but whichever central midfielder is nearest to the referee at any given point will function as on-field captain in the event of needing to speak to them.
Timing note: I am RPing this as happening just after the Eagle’s Cup (in which a few players participated). That means it is during the Græntfjaller winter: domestic players will not currently be playing, but those in overseas leagues might have to be withdrawn from domestic committments if they play in leagues that operate during the winter. In terms of age, Lara will turn 22 during the tournament but is selected as being 21 on MD1, which is the arbitrary standard I will use.

The last time the senior squad enters the tournament ended with Khytonya heading home, though it's not without fair showing for them. This time, it'll be the under-21 squad to show who will be made of. The battleground: the Di Bradini Cup. This youth cup was named after one of the most celebrated footballers in Starblaydia (and possibly the whole multiverse) of all time names Simeone Di Bradini. With so many trophies and medals he won throughout his illustrious career, Di Bradini is constantly looked up upon by young players desiring to take up as much success and fame as him. It may be a bit egotistical but a child will dream further and push himself to the greatest...until his time is up, of course.

This latest DBC cup will see 32 participants sending out their best potential wonder kids and youngsters to fight for the crown of champions. These players would potentially become part of the senior squad once they proved to be capably excellent editions to their main team. Who knows'? It's like the senior team's debut in the AOCAF, only much different than what you see. Just a straight-up Group Stage and Knockout tournament format, and not this Nations League format where one would harshly punish low-ranked nations for their mere incompetence.

The Young Magicians take the field with a 4-1-4-1 formation. Essentially, the midfielders are bolstered heavily and act as an iron curtain behind a defensive wall. This keeps the back four at bay while assisting with the forwards during offensive plays. It's not surprising given how the newly appointed manager Maxwell Dwyer likes the idea of midfielders who can support both defensively and offensively and so more of them will be featured in the whole team. However, Dwyer wanted players already signed with professional teams as he can't deal with academy players well due to a funny incident many years ago. Still, that problem shouldn't get in his way.

Bentley Hart is the starting netminder for today. Though a little pudgy on his body, it doesn't stop him from making great dives to prevent a shot. Hart is also a great kicker so he'll be a key member in clearing the ball to set up a counter-attack, as well as being an expert on one-on-one situations.

The back four were chosen for their strength with an added touch of their secondary abilities. They'll be more likely to win the ball back from their opponents, although at the expense of their pace. Possibly the fastest out of the defenders is Harbeck Madigan whose focus on physical quickness is an advantage compared to other bruisers. Likewise, Priscilla Kwong admired beefy bodybuilders at a young age and would like to put her muscle to good use. She'd like being the moving wall standing in everyone's way as she'll be on the move to intercept passes. The other two, Tyrell Tugnutt and Mohd. Khairul Syed Hussein, are quick thinkers with a sense of where the players move into. They're also the tallest at about 195cm for both. Clearing headers shouldn't be a problem...unless they screwed up by letting players slip past through both defenders.

The midfielder is where the fun starts. Aiding the defense is Orlando Gilmour guarding the wall. Like another defensive midfielder Jared O'Reilly, Gilmour played as a defender before his position switch. Now, he acts as the main coordinator on the defensive line keeping them in check in case of any leakages. As a bonus, Gilmour's presence means the formation could easily transition into a 5-4-1 should the matchday call for it. Out of the rest of the four midfielders, the shining star in the whole squad is cool-headed captain Sheryl Robertson. Her unique quirks rely on taking the pressure of the match, keeping her focus of the game from losing. Dwyer appointed Robertson as captain due to her calm nature helping to tie the team together, though she won't be afraid to dish out heavy tackles. Her other partner, Nasser Faizal, is a gentle giant. As for right now, he hasn't received a booking throughout his career only going so far as a simple warning from the referee. Besides, Faizal is a team worker efficient at co-ordinating his teammates to achieve a team effort. For the wide midfielders, Amber Gretzky and Dean Schriner don't have much to talk about other than their dribbling abilities. Both are attacking minded willing to push the offense and pull out a good goal via assists, as are the aforementioned Nasser and Robertson.

Coming from the senior team is hardworking youngster Arianne Panarin. Her lone goal during her tenure in the latest AOCAF campaign is the highlight of her career. Now serving as the Young Magician's main striker, she has plenty of players to fall back upon and join up her attacks. Panarin's constant tireless training won't be enough for her to overcome the defense. Perhaps she'll be able to once she is nurtured into a fearless vixen.

After the senior national team has established itself in the international competition, it is now time for the U-21s to leave their mark. They are also playing in the 4-3-3 of the national team to continue the federation's tactical philsosophy that is coached throughout all age classes.

The same the fans of the senior team, the fans of the Owlets also deserve particular mentioning. Not only are they renowned for their chants, but they are also bringing the Thunder Clap (Click here for example) to the stadium, something that the players join in as a pre-game ritual that has left an impression on the opponents and opposing fans more than once (OOC: similar to the Haka of the New Zealand All Blacks). The players will form a triangle near the kick off circle and lift their arms, which the fans do as well. Then a long drum will start to signal the rhythm and both players and fans alike will move in unison, each clap accompanied with a loud cry, the claps (and cries) speeding up, creating an overwhelming sense of impending doom.

Seymour McCann - 54
McCann is mainly the head coach of the Baraldhur AFC academy, but has agreed to take over the job as U-21 coach of Tikariot as well. His outstanding work with the academy, which has produced the likes of Morris Nighthorse, Stian Askebrand and Morgan Stephenson in recent years and has talents like Lennox Jhon Gustavino, Lennox Bell or Oliver Crossley already in the extended TPL squad made him a prime candidate to take care of the U-21 team at the De Bradini Cup as well. While Baraldhur does not usually play in the favoured 4-3-3 system, he is one of Tikariot's tactically most variable coaches, enabling him to switch to the national system without any adjustment issues.

G Mathias Prediger - 18 - Ancarea FC
As young goalkeeper in the squad of a predicted relegation team, Prediger has been outstanding in making Ancarea's goal against total one of the lowest in the whole league. With fantastic reflexes and an already more than decent control of his defense it is not surprising that several bigger teams already have Prediger in their notebooks for the next season.
LB Ximon Bergstrand - 20 - Guillarim Blades FC
Part of the Guillarim experiment of only local players, Bergstrand has already seen some senior NT action. A short, but immensely quick, player he is not the most physically robust, but can use his speed to make up for it. His runs down the left side with sharp crosses into the box are turning heads in the TPL and make him a candidate for bigger things in the very near future.
CB Caleb McKinley - 18 - Dhun Lagarr FC
One of this season's revelations so far, McKinley had been instrumental in Dhun Lagarr's surprising rise to fame in the league. A tall, towering presence he is great against high balls and knows how to use his physical game to his advantage. He still has some technical deficits, but in man-to-man combat there are few teenagers in the TPL that can match his intensity.
CB Salman Faizullah - 18 - Port Tacassam FC
Some pundits thought that Faizullah's relatively diminutive stature stood against a career as centre back, but he has been proving them wrong. While not a great force in the air, he has this warrior instinct that makes him a very fierce competitor in challenges and while being very aggressive he has this tendency to time his tackles with great precision and fairly.
RB Duke Waltham - 18 - Oriannor Mountaineers FC
Despite his age one of the most experienced players in the squad, also with some senior national team appearances under his belt. A strong, physical player that has less offensive upside than Bergstrand, but is capable of shutting down opposing wingers and wing backs with high efficiency. He also can be pulled into the centre as additional centre back as needed as he has a strong aerial presence as well.
LM Israel Conrad - 19 - OMB (TIO)
To a lot of people's surprise, Conrad made the step to go abroad before the season, signing with OMB of Tioguldos. He is the workhorse of the team capable of running trenches along the left side and is equally dependable on both ends of the field without being outstanding on either. His versatility, however, allows other players to experience more freedom to express as they have him to rely on.
CM Pierre Sukunda - 21 - Parakleion Firebirds FC
The conductor of the team, Sukunda has tremendous tactical acumen and technique. On a good day he can read and direct the game like a master, on a bad day he is still prone to too hasty decisions. Going through a rough patch with the Firebirds in the TPL right now his game has suffered a bit as well, but hopes are that being in different surroundings will help him regain his focus.
RM Yosvani Fernandez - 18 - Guillarim Blades FC
Where Sukunda is responsible for the magic in the team, Fernandez brings the physical play. While having a decent technique, he is the tireless shadow that will haunt any opposing players, running them down to recover the ball and immediately start the counter attack. Good speed and great passing make him a dependable player.
LW Parramore Haigh - 18 - Tikariot City FC
After starting out as one of the TPL's shooting stars last season before fizzling out, also due to an injury, Haigh has been waging an uphill battle at the TCFC, starting on the bench at the beginning of the season, but with seven goals and benefitting from a series of injuries to regular first team players he has regained some of the magic and is seeing the De Bradini Cup as both a confirmation of his return to form and also a stepping stone to get back into the senior team. While technically a winger he has the tendency to cut inside and go for the goal himself instead of just relying on coming from the outside, making him a very viable offensive threat.
CF Veikko Haparanta - 18 - Anhedron Wanderers FC
Similar to Haigh, Haparanta is a sub on paper for the Wanderers, but so far has eclipsed Jesson Morrison in both goals and assists and the only reason why he is not seeing more starting action is due to having Morrison, Mosnyk and Torben Grandelius ahead of him. A very powerful centre forward, the Fort Viljan academy product plays a physical game with strong technique to convert the first touch, but also a good eye for the teammate, making him a good setup man as well.
RW Hamish Stainthorpe - 19 - Dhun Lagarr FC
Forming an ingenious striker tandem with Askari Ravanna Ballarin, Stainhorpe's nine goals this season so far have him in the top 10 of scorers in the TPL to date. Where Ballarin has the speed and technique, Stainthorpe brings in his height for a tremendous aerial presence as well as this scoring instinct that allows him to shoot from almost all positions with increasing accuracy.

PLAYER INFORMATION

GK: Semir Besak, 17, Olympic Thessia [MYT]
Very few 17 year olds can say that they start for a Mytanar Top League club. Even fewer can say that they start for a Mytanar Top League club which won the league last season, but Besak is in that very exclusive club. He's a bit of a phenom, the young goalkeeper, with many tipping him to be the one to take the starting role from Pedja Kasun when the Ararat goalkeeper decides to call it a day or starts to decline. Besak can do a bit of everything, he's a brave shot-stopper and uses his height to good effect when coming out to claim high balls and crosses with confidence. The part of his game he may need to work on is his distribution, but that should come with time, he has a very bright future ahead of him. He finished 2nd in the running for Under-23 Player of the Season; and 3rd in the Golden Glove award as he was part of an Olympic defence which kept 12 clean sheets and limited opponents to only 25 goals through 30 games on their way to the league title.

GK: Visa Marinkovic, 21, CDSA [MYT]
Marinkovic is your typical goalkeeper: tall, loud and occasionally a little eccentric. He has good reflexes and he uses his size well, it's rare to see teams able to put a player on him at set-pieces given he usually simply pushes them as far away from him as possible before they've a chance to get close. He enjoyed a productive return to Mytanar football with CDSA after a short spell at KF Atlant in Qusmo, keeping goal for the Top League's 5th best defence and confronting every single striker who left a boot in on him as he tried to claim the ball down low. Unlikely to get on the pitch with Besak ahead of him, but a good presence with the squad.

GK: Jasmin Bertovic, 20, Energija-Nuklearna [MYT]
And now to the goalkeeper who kept goal for the Top League's 6th best defence. Jasmin Bertovic is one of a strong young crop of players coming through at the Miago based Energija-Nuklearna. He's notably very good with his feet and there is often grainy snippets of him spraying extremely precise long passes deep into opposition territory found on Mytanar social media following games. Perhaps not quite as confident as the other two in the under-21 squad in coming out to claim crosses and high balls, he's a slightly shorter goalkeeper - standing at 187 cm - but again, hes's unlikely to get game time with Besak being the definitive number one in this squad.

ST: Lazar Prinelec, 18, Olympic Thessia [MYT]
Winner of the under-23 Player of the Season award and third place in the Golden Boot with 16 goals in 30 games, Prinelec's productivity was a huge part of Olympic Thessia's unlikely title win last season. He also wrote himself into Olympic legend by scoring the game-winning, title-winning goal with the very last kick of the game in one of the most breathlessly incredible endings to a league season ever. Prinelec is possibly the biggest talent in this team, a forward who can do everything asked of him whether it be holding the ball up or running in behind he can do it all. The big question for him now is translating that talent to the senior national team in the coming years. He'll lead the line here at the DBC and how he does will hopefully give a good indication of how likely he is to meet the great expectations many in Mytanar football have of him.

ST: Mijat Simic, 20, Energija-Nuklearna [MYT]
Simic is a little pest of a striker, constantly buzzing around defenders and causing them grief. He'll seize on mistakes gleefully, stealing the ball off a centre-halves toes before poking past the goalkeeper. The worst thing is that he takes childish delight in doing so and the havoc he creates among defences allows his team mates to play better too. A bit of a poacher most of the time he's no stranger to the six-yard box, he scored 12 goals in 30 games in the Top League last season and if somebody combined the distance of those goals it probably didn't add up to very much. It is his energetic pressing that Fejzic will value here though, young defenders are often more error-prone than those with more experience and Simic is the sort of player who can engineer those errors.

ST: Petar Majdandzic, 20, 1896 Ebor [MYT]
A towering centre forward Majdandzic will give Mytanija their Plan B in this tournament, he's a big target-man for his club side and Fejzic will likely bring him on if a goal is needed in this tournament because his aerial presence provides something a little different. He didn't have his most fruitful season domestically, only scoring 8 goals in 28 games for an 8th placed 1896 Ebor side, but he's in the team here and will enjoy the challenge of playing and testing himself against other under-21 national sides.

ST/AMC: Damien Gannot, 19, Atletik Thessia [MYT]
Damien Gannot is the son of Atletik legend Alex Gannot, the Sicoutimont attacking midfielder, but there's no danger of Damien becoming embroiled in a citizenship battle - he's certain he wants to represent the country of his birth. He's a very similar player to his father, a striker-number ten hybrid and he can cause problems for opponents due to his fantastic off the ball movement. He provides Fejzic with some much needed versatility, able to play in attacking midfield if necessary but he's been brought here as a forward. Expect to see him start some games if Simic isn't effective, the partnership with the more complete forward Prinelec would be an interesting proposition to deal with for opponents as Gannot constantly dropping deep could leave space for Prinelec, a very dangerous situation to end up in.

Three choices of formation for the team here. The base formation is a 4-3-1-2, so that is what the team will look like when they are out of possession against an opponent. Mersudin Smajic will be in the centre of the midfield trio and they will try to occupy the space in front of the Mytanar defence to prevent the opposition from having time or space in the centre of the pitch and force them outside. The back four will remain narrow for the most part and try to defend the width of the penalty area. The attacking midfielder and strikers will press the opposition's defensive midfielder (if applicable) and defenders when they have the ball to try and force them into low percentage hurried passes or into giving up possession nearer to their own goal. When Mytanija regain possession the formation will morph from 4-3-1-2 into a 3-2-3-2, to do this Mersudin Smajic (or whoever is in the centre of Mytanija's midfield three), will drop in between the centre backs to provide a little more defensive security against counter attacks; ahead of them will be the other two central midfielders; then the next three is the attacking midfielder trying to find space in the middle and the team's full-backs pushed high up the field, remaining very wide out on the touchline to provide width for the team to attack with; then finally the two strikers. The 4-3-1-2 is seen as a pretty attack minded formation in Mytanija, particularly due to the demand placed on the full-backs when going forward as they are the method in which the formation retains width and keeps the opponent stretched to an extent. Due to the fact the full-backs have to be high up the field this can leave space for the opponent to attack into down the flanks and this could provide a fruitful opportunity for teams to exploit, although the central midfielder dropping between the centre-halves is designed to mitigate against this.

They do have an option to switch to a more orthodox 4-2-3-1 should they require a different tactical approach. This can be either attack-minded or more defensive dependent on what is needed. Whether it is one or the other mostly depends (again!) on the way in which the full-backs are used and the personnel in the centre of midfield. If Mytanija need a goal then the full-backs will be instructed to overlap their wingers to try and create overloads in wide areas; if Mytanija are ahead then the full-backs will be instructed to hold their defensive position alongside the central defenders. Similarly if the team are ahead then Fejzic may choose to remove Ajanovic and go with Smajic and Simselevic as the two central midfielders as they're better defensively, or he could introduce Kurtcehajic for one of those two even as he's the most equipped in the defensive side of the game. The change from 4-3-1-2 to 4-2-3-1 requires the introduction of wingers (in this case Yvjoev and Gajic), they will usually come in for one of the central midfielders and Mijat Simic from the starting line-up. Prinelec will almost always be the lone striker unless a more direct option is needed in which case the taller, more physically imposing Majdandzic will come on.

Finally, whilst Fejzic isn't as well known for his tactical innovation as Lev Repin is with the senior national team the 4-6-0 is very much being introduced across the Mytanar youth squads as it is seen as an unusual formation for opponents to deal with and something which can provide the national team with an advantage. This means it could be employed here, if Mytanija do switch to a 4-6-0 it means playing without a recognised striker, to do this they would employ one or two 'false nines' (ie. a player who may take-up positions which a conventional striker usually would but regularly drops deeper into midfield to join-in the build-up play). The aim of this is moving the opponent's central defenders up the pitch to create space for the team's wingers (so Yvjoev and Gajic) to attack into. If using one false nine it will usually be Gannot employed in this role and if two it'd be Gannot and Shishkin. When using the 4-6-0 the team's full-backs would be much more conservative than in the 4-2-3-1. The 4-6-0 is something the team may switch to mid-match with the usual starting eleven if the opponent is easily dealing with the 4-2-3-1, but also if Mytanija find themselves ahead in the game as it allows the team's four defenders to focus purely on the defensive aspect of their game as Mytanija's variation of the formation doesn't demand much of the full backs offensively. This formation would require the introduction of three players (Gannot, Yvjoev and Gajic would usually come on for Prinelec, Simic and a central midfielder) to carry out, so it would more likely be used at the start of the game than during, unless the team is in need of a severe tactical change to alter the way the game is going.

TEAM ROLES
Captaincy: Grigorij Savicevic is the team captain here. Zvonko Nestorovski is vice-captain and should both Savicevic and Nestorovski go off the pitch then it would pass to Maks Shishkin.
Penalties: Lazar Prinelec would be the first choice, after that Maks Shishkin. The order for a penalty shoot-out (and order of penalties should the two first-choice takers be off the field) would be something like: Prinelec, Shishkin, Ajanovic, Smajic, Patrik Odonelec, Simselevic; then Dusko Ocokoljic, Kurtcehajic, Gannot etc should they be off the pitch - and you'd expect some to be after 90 minutes, plus extra time.
Corners: From the starting line-up it'd be Ajanovic and Shishkin putting these in, with the likes of Yvjoev and Gajic being the first-choice corner takers off the bench.
Short free kicks: Shishkin will have a monopoly on these opportunities when he's on the pitch, but after he goes off it's really anybody's game, probably with Ajanovic and Prinelec at the front of the queue but you can go wild here really. Pick a name and run with it.
Long free kicks: Usually the full-backs or Ajanovic would be putting the longer free kicks in for the likes of Savicevic, Usten Odonelec, Simselevic and Prinelec to get on the end of, although they may choose to take these quickly and try to move possession closer to the opposition's goal occasionally.

NOTES:
• Adem Fejzic has landed on his feet despite losing his job as the manager of Mytanija's most successful club side, Atletik Thessia. The 55 year old allowed Atletik's great rivals Olympic Thessia to win their first ever Top League title and as soon as that happened the writing was on the wall for him. He has jumped straight into the manager's seat with the under-21 national team though, with the team needing a new coach after Lev Repin made the move into the senior national side's managerial position. Fejzic didn't get it right with Atletik but he has a reputation for developing young players which is almost a prerequisite for a junior national team management posiiton, so he should hopefully do better here. He prefers his teams to play a 4-3-1-2 formation which can be seen in his team selection here and isn't the most flexible tactically normally, although he has been mandated to be by the FSM due to the level of tactical flexibility Lev Repin is trying to instil in the senior national team. It is hoped that if Fejzic gets the players in the under-21 squad used to some degree of flexibility then the jump up to the full national side will not be quite as difficult for them.

• Mytanija has qualified to 11 World Cups, reaching the quarter finals in World Cup 68. Mytanija has won the Copa Rushmori once (XVII), to go with two victories in the Cup of Harmony (56 and 59); and a Di Bradini Cup win (DBC40). Some of these achievements were made under the names Mytannion/the Mytanar Region, Mytanija is ICly the exact same place.

• Mytanars are renowned for being passionate and therefore will not be afraid of confrontation if they feel they're on the end of a particularly rough tackle. At the same time Mytanars are not afraid of gamesmanship and may perform some questionable tackles of their own, along with tactical fouls to prevent the opponent from gaining momentum. Furthermore, diving, crowding referees and even intentional handballs (OOC: so Maradona's Hand of God and Suarez for Uruguay versus Ghana, that sort of stuff), to influence the game are not beyond Mytanar players. They will argue that winning is the most important thing and will do anything they can to achieve victory. Some might call it dirty, Mytanars don't, that won't stop them complaining when things go against them naturally.

• Mytanar fans are well-known for being hooligans, causing problems wherever they go and being prone to violence. They also make outstanding choreographies for their domestic sides and occasionally the national team (if they aren't fighting each other), so pyrotechnics, flags and lots of noise and alcohol are common place. Corteos (organised marches from a specific place to the stadium), are also common, these can lead to areas being shutdown as the sheer numbers of fans walking along roads block traffic and can lead to issues as police attempt to marshal supporters too. Given the ongoing political situation in Mytanija, whether ultra groups are able to put aside differences regarding politics, ethnicity etc for the national side is a pertinent question and the answer to it may change even from game to game.

The FAC was founded in 1901 and currently has 128 full member clubs, 307 associate member clubs and approximately 21,000 registered players--male & female--between the ages of 11 to 65+ as well as approximately 3,100 registered officials, both male & female. It sponsors competitions across all age groups, genders and ability levels, including 12 National Championships and 6 domestic cup competitions for men and women.

The 42nd edition of the Di Bradini Cup was the first tournament entered by the Commonwealth, where they reached the quarterfinals on their debut. Liam Sullivan was the manager of that team and will lead the squad, which is young but experienced, with over half the squad having earned 15 or more youth team caps.

Goalkeepers:
Charlie Barrett (19): After having a disappointing season for Mid-Capital, Barrett has been given another shot at the DBC where they will look to go better than last cup, where they came last in their group. He will play a vital role in the Young Chickens’ campaign.
Michayla Paxton (20): Only played a few Premiership games due to Zaharias Frangoglou, an 18-year-old Vdaran, was the main goalkeeper for Avondale Beach SC. However, she has pipped Matthew Hope, a rival keeper, for the spot in the national Sylestone U-21 side. If she gets a chance, it will be interesting to see what she can produce.

Defenders:
Sophia Pearson (20): Pearson had a relatively underwhelming Premiership for Cleorough FC, despite playing in every game of the season. She has recently been playing very well at training, however, so it will be interesting to see what she can bring to the group.
Sunil Damasekara (20): Damasekara is another youth defender who played poorly last Premiership. He failed to produce anything of substance and was dropped for a few games. However, the DBC committee has remained faithful in him as they hope he can turn around his form for this tournament.
Mitchell Stevenson (20): Stevenson played very well for Capital FC in their remarkable run to champions of the Premiership. He, however, was not quite good enough to make it to the top 5 under-25 players. He made up for the injured Jason Finnigan well, who will also be playing this tournament, albeit on the bench. Will be essential if Sylestone can make it far here.
Jayden Clarke (18): This young man is a stunning player who helped Dunkirk Athletic to seventh on the table last season. He was a dark horse but was by far the best of the defenders for the Dunkirk side. Another player to look out for.
Jason Finnigan (21): Finnigan is certainly one of Sylestone's best youth defenders, if not the best. However, he is recovering from a severe injury that put him out for the majority of the last season. He is still not at his best, although it would be very surprising if he doesn't participate in this tournament.
Harriet Zezoni (17): Zezoni filled in for the injured Finnigan and played her role very well. She did so well that the Di Bradini Cup selectors chose her as the final defender in the 17-player side. Her promise is high, being only 17 years of age and brilliance is expected of her in the future.

Midfielders:
Austin Miller (20): After a disappointing season for Mid-Capital, where they only just manage to remain within the Premiership, Miller played better than the vast majority of his side. He will be an asset to Sylestone's campaign in the 49th Di Bradini Cup.
Amelia Stanton (17): Another minor in the Sylestone side, Stanton is an up-and-coming right midfielder in the Sylestone Domestic Football competitions. This journey will be a learning experience for her, but some good performances for Betham FC, particularly in the cup, has pushed her case for selection here. Will be interesting to see what happens to her.
Harry Love (15): What a gun. Love is just 15 and by far the youngest in the squad. Yet he is possibly one of the most crucial players. He is known throughout Sylestone for his brilliant ability to read the game and stay calm under pressure and is Halpenley City's best penalty-kicker. Played an amazing role in Halpenley City's first season of which they finished in the top half.
Hannah Lawson (20): Lawson played in the last Di Bradini Cup, so she knows what's coming Sylestone's way for the rest of the tournament. After a disappointing season for Katham FC, Lawson will be looking to turn it around like many of her other teammates.
Abigail Jones (17): Yet another minor in the side, Jones played well for Cleorough FC, leading them to a reasonably successful season. She is possibly the nicest player verbally you will ever meet but is vicious when trying to get the ball. Very deceitful indeed.

Forwards:
Harrison Gilchrist (18): After finishing with youth player of the season and with one of the highest amount of goals, Gilchrist is probably the most important player in the side. He will be the one to score lots of goals and get the side across the line. His form has been brilliant recently, and if it continues, who knows how far Sylestone will go?
Rose Fleetwood (19): Another form player, Fleetwood scored the most goals for Betham FC in the last Premiership. She also played in this tournament two years ago and is undoubtedly one of the up-and-coming stars for Sylestone. If she produces the goods again, Sylestone will be difficult to stop.
Cameron Keyes (19): Keyes also played very well for Betham FC in the Premiership, only pipped by his girlfriend Fleetwood for the best youth player in the side. The relationship between these two will be a strong point of the cup and will likely make it or break it. But Keyes will, once again, be vital to the side.
Max Macintosh (20): The third Betham forward in the side, Macintosh is another who played in the 48th Di Bradini Cup. Watch out for him, because he is very aggressive and will stop at nothing to take the ball off you.
Brianna Hancock (19): Rounding out the side is Cleorough forward Brianna Hancock, who played only a small amount of the games in the Premiership. In those games, however, she played extremely well and will be looking to do the same this tournament.

After the disastrous 48th Di Bradini Cup, the 49th is a new hope for Sylestone's side. Can they do it or will the fall flat? One thing is for sure, it will be stunning to watch!

Everything was the same for new Sarzonian under 21 national team manager Diego Cristobal except that it was different.

After serving as the top assistant to Nathan Hanifer, Cristobal was elevated to the top job after Hanifer accepted the top assistant's role with the Sarzonian national team. His enthusiasm, which won him good stead with Hanifer was now on full display as he cheerfully led the team through its paces.

"We're going to have fun out here," he said. "It's going to be exciting to see where this team goes."

Sarzonia's Junior Stars won the group during what turned out to be Hanifer's final go-round as Sarzonia's manager, but flamed out in the first knockout round. Cristobal said his top priority before the team plays its opening match against Chromatika will be to develop depth at striker. The Stars may look to Kristine Lynam, who was the dangerous creative forward for the Under 18 national team under Diogo Avarel before she aged out. The 5-foot-7, 140 pound forward would bring flair to the Junior Stars if Cristobal adds her to the team.

"We're giving several players a look," Cristobal said. "Only having one reserve striker is not an ideal situation for our team."

The Junior Stars may also call up a reserve goalkeeper with Eleanor Keating fast approaching the age where she would be ineligible to back up Glen Baker in goal. Cristobal said she was "pushing Glen hard" for a spot in the starting 11, and she may start on Matchday 2 against Kohnhead. The identity of the Matchday 3 starter against HUElavia is still anyone's guess.

"A lot's going to be determined based on where we are in the table and whether we're in the knockout rounds or we're trying to get a better seed in the knockouts," Cristobal said.

As for the opponents in Group A, all of them are countries that Sarzonia has at least some familiarity with. Sarzonia and HUElavia played a dramatic knockout round match during the Field Hockey World Cup, marking Sarzonia's second victory in as many attempts in that sport's ultimate championship. The Stars and Chromatika are well acquainted in AOCAF play, while Sarzonia and Kohnhead have met recently in a number of sports. Team Personality
The Darmeni team will never argue with the referee. Indeed, if anything needs to be brought to the attention of the referee it will be done by either the Captain or Vice-Captain in a respectful manner (or to the fourth-official by the Manager). With regards to foul/dirty play, the Darmeni team will not provoke, or retaliate against any opposition player. Darmeni's expect each team to keep to itself and deal with its own trouble makers; any opposition player who attempts to prevent a conflict by pushing or pulling a Darmeni away from the scene will be promptly told off, as that is the duty of the Darmeni Captain.

Nonetheless, Darmen will play in a relatively aggressive manner. Tackles will be conducted in a way which ensures the opponent ends up on the ground, but causing injury will be avoided as much as possible. On set pieces, Darmenis will stand their ground and will not be easily pushed around, they will not however engage in hugging. In fact, if any opposing player tries to push past them, it is not uncommon for the Darmeni player to feign resistance before simply stepping aside and watching as the opposing player stumbles past on their way to ground. This occasionally backfires however, as the referee may mistake the incidence as having been a foul in the box.

“Just shut it, Pjel, and let me do the talking.”

Mauro straightened his back, indicating he had already taken the defensive stance for what was incoming. I tried to keep my eyes from the shards, from the growing stain on the carpet which gave the blue a purple hue, … But I couldn’t.

“What have you boys been up t- Oh goddamnit! What did I tell you about playing indoors? Get to your room, both!”
“Sorry mum, it was an accident and…”
“I don’t care, quick, get out of my sight!”
“It was me who did it.”

With his big labrador eyes, he stared straight through mother until she let me off the hook. When she hit him with the outside of her hand, the heavy rings tilted towards his face, Mauro didn't utter a peep. Later that day, that pair of dark eyes burned in my back from the top window, whilst I tried to break my record on keeping the ball of the ground in the street.

They were taller. They all were taller. Their shirts shined and fitted around their muscled shoulders. I slowly looked at my own arms as if I’ve never noted their presence before. The whiteness nearly reflected the sunlight and they looked like matchsticks, a minor twist and they would snap.

“I want to go home, Mauro, I-”
“Just shut it, Pjel, and follow me.”

Without any hesitation, Mauro paced along the touchline. I had never noticed that he possessed those broad arms as well, that air of beaming confidence surrounding him.

“Coach? Coach, that’s him.”

The tall man, disentangling his net slowly but precisely, didn’t turn but simply placed his chin on his shoulder - just enough to take me up from head to toe.

“That’s it?” he concluded.
“Yes coach, he’s really -”
“If they kick him off the pitch, I’m not to blame,” the gaffer cut Mauro short. Everything in his attitude made you wonder why on earth he was assigned a youth squad if he would rather chase the lot of the field with a pitchfork. “And get him some proper shoes.”

I stared at my feet. Once the pair had been black but they had turned greyish as I wore them to school every day.

“Here, have mine,” Mauro said.
“But, do you have a second pair with studs,” I muttered.
“I’ll fix it, just shut it and play, Pjel.”

It was a blazing hot day and even I was content with simply kicking it back and forth against the wall. Footballing alone never came as a problem to me, although I rarely had to do it. Even if the coach insisted I kept it nice and tidy, I couldn’t but play in my Catrallo Calcio shirt ever since I signed my first card. From the corner of my eye I saw him coming, with torn pants and blood dripping from his cheek. He must have been running for miles, because it had become a sad shuffle by now. I tried to call his name as he approached but stood frozen in time. A part of me believes I should have ran towards him, even though I never could have made it.

He fell to one knee as they caught up with him. There is a decent chance that I should forget my own name before the frailness of his shriek is wiped from my memory.

A blade ripped apart the last vowel as it trembled in the air.

Siboni walked the hallway, feeling a bit more like a concierge than an actual football coach. Still, he felt it was his obligation to do this. They had landed two days ago and the boys had fallen from one surprise into the next. The Valanor hosts had been polite up to the point where it became uncomfortable for the lads, the vast majority of whom had never been across the country borders. Moreover, they were not used to being treated like proper footballers, let alone guests in one of the most notorious celebrations of the game. Ernesto was grateful he set up camp in Arouw, a smaller city yet close enough to the stadium venues, but the team still had been awed: by the high-speed railways, by the skyscrapers, by the balanced cities which contrasted heavily with the often uninspired concrete blocks of San Ortelio.

As such, the tension could be felt on the pitch as well. They had trained together at home before and there was still work left to drill the system - but if they performed against Quebec as they did this afternoon, it was best to book the flight home already. Their heads just were not in it yet and Ernesto feared the impact of the large stadium on their skills.

Contemplating all that, he walked from room to room, putting his ear against the door to spot any nighthawks. There had been muffled laughter with the Pesari duo which had put him in a bad mood. Quintarelli and Spaviero formed two vital elements in the line-up, they shouldn’t behave like schoolgirls on a trip to the sea. A soft but clear hairdryer treatment brought back the solemn silence of the night. As such, he reached the final door: Dolci and Vitali. They both still were kids, in a way. Loaded with talent but still harnessed in the developing body. Especially the striker still looked lanky like a teenager, with arms that didn’t suit the rest of his corper. If he had not seen him play yet, he would consider Vitali an imposter in a national football team tracksuit.

It was quiet and he nearly turned away, when he noticed the light coming from underneath the door. Siboni hesitated for a second but barged in nonetheless. In the furthest bed, Luca Dolci slept so soundly that he snoozed right through the sound. Pier Luigi Vitali, on the other hand, was staring him in the face. Or in a way, he wasn't. There was something scary about the vale hotel light combined with the full moon and the complete lack of expression from the kid. He just sat there straight, looking to the wall. Through the wall.

“It’s far past time, Pier Luigi - big day coming up.”

He nodded, “sure, coach.”

“I need your best, your focus out there.”

Another nod but not even a hint of eye contact. A part of Siboni wanted to give it another try, and get more than a few words in a row out of him. But he knew Vitali from Calcio and knew it was a wasted effort. Besides, he’ld only wake up Luca. And then again, he couldn’t remember a game where Vitali hadn’t turned up - if sometimes only after a half or an hour, as if he had to shake off that lethargy. Hopefully he’ld resurface earlier in the Quebec game. The options up front were limited, even if Spaviero was a good element. In a way, picking Vitali for the squad, let alone the line-up, had been the pet peeve of Siboni and he knew that his performance would reflect on the national belief in himself as a national manager.

“Well… Good night.”

Another nod but his eyes remained locked to a point in a room Ernesto couldn’t enter.

Two years after it looked like the keeper position was about to be a bogey position for the Young Wanderers, and by extension the senior team, suddenly things look a lot more promising with Dalma Kollár having had two sensational seasons with the Tani youth team, including help taking them to the Youth League title. Fenyves also did exceptionally well for Galatica in the Youth League, taking them to the Central Pargis title before losing to Tani in the semifinal. This trio all looks to have a good amount of potential but Dalma has had the most success and thus will get the starting nod.

A theme is going to be quite prevelent in this side, that is a lot of Tani players have played their way into starting roles with how good the Tani youth team has performed the last two years. That means Sinka and Szölôsi get to move to starting roles and hopefully will be able to bring some chemsitry and consistency to the backline, especially with Dalma behind them. Erôss is getting game time with Bombarralense in Audioslavia, helping them to achieve a midtable position with a decent goals against record, meaning they edge out Vida for the other starting spot, while Víglundsson will hopefully be an adequate replacement for Salas and continue a line of good players emerging from Peynol.

Some say the Lunas youngsters in the middle of the park looked a bit lesser than they had in their first outing two years ago and there could be a case for Orsós to get a starting nod ahead of one of them, but Griffiths seems to believe that the two still have the makings to be great and are sticking with them in their last tournament of being eligible. Luckily on the left hand side Gillen Madrigal López has been something of a revelation and looks to be making a good case for herself to get starts with CAP and pushing for the senior national team as well. As with the defense, the good seasons of Tani have seen Katinka maintain her position as starter, though her grip is less tight than the defenders.

Magana continues to do well with CAP but his development does not look to have the same trajectory, with a solo striker formation and two national team starters to try and supplant, but his time with the Young Wanderers has shown he knows how to put the ball in the back of the net with regularity. Off the bench, Csorba is still the best option, being more pacy than Kocsis, though the latter can play more of a hold up role should the side require.

The Commonwealth National Under 21 Team is making their way back to Valanora to participate in the Di Bradini Cup once again, with a squad that has seen a lot of action in their brief youth careers.

This will be the final age restricted tournament for 12 players who played on the U18 Championship side in Siovanija & Teusland, who would like nothing better than to finish off the way they started—with a winners medal; six others--defenders Emily Bruce & Jon Schulman, midfielders Alonzo Boyle & Amber McFairlaine, and forwards Amy Knight & Karrie Price--elected not to return as they are all regular starters at their clubs.

As always, the DBC is filled with tough competition and the bottom half of the draw raises the possibility that BP will face the defending champion Valladares, Cassadaigua, or Equestria in the knockout stages; within Group H, the opposition will be Island of the Lost, Darmen and Megistos.

The group will have it's matches in Valanari, at Duran Palace, and in nearby Everlin at Aranfield Bridge, but the FAC has elected to continue to make the squad's base in Sharala, northwest of both venues; the logistics of moving back & forth across the country are not as problematic as it is other nations, hence the decision to maintain the status quo.

The FAC are unveiling the redesigned NT badge here, which has been made narrower but is otherwise substantially unchanged.
