NS World Cup of Masters II (35+ football) IC Thread

Postby Sarzonia » Sun Nov 22, 2020 1:44 pm

The Incorporated Football Federation of Sarzonia cordially welcomes the other 15 nations who have signed up for the second edition of the NS World Cup of Masters.

Unlike the first edition, the group stage for this edition will take place in the various countries' home stadia. The knockout rounds will take place in Sarzonia. Information about the venues and the host cities will be forthcoming.

The teams will be divided into four groups of four teams each. Each team will have two matches against each opponent in its group. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockout rounds.

The 16 partipating nations are as follows:
1. Sarzonia
2. Sylestone
3. Rwekazaland
4. Megistos
5. Kriegiersien
6. HUElavia
7. Mavinet
8. Kohnhead
9. Silvedania
10. Space
11. Transvolcanic
12. Hebitaka
13. Abanhfleft
14. Kavagrad
15. Damukuni

The group draw was completed on random.org. With the exception of Sarzonian automatically being drawn into the top position in Group 1, the IFF employed a pot system that favoured returning nations. Kriegiersien, Sylestone, and Megistos as teams that advanced to the knockout rounds were the other Pot 1 teams.

As returning competitors with a rank, HUElavia and Kohnhead were assigned to Pot 2. Since Abanhfleft participated with The APOC Coalition in WCoM I, they were assigned as a Pot 2 team. Everyone else was ordered randomly.

The groups are as follows:

GROUP 1
Sarzonia
Abanhfleft
Mavinet
Rangers FC

GROUP 2
Megistos
Kohnhead
Hebitaka
Silvedania

Woodstock Profile
Sarzonia's capital city features the Gray House, where current President Grant Haffner lives, The Manor, where Lieutenant President and former First Gentleman Brian Patrick lives, Parliament Hall where the Sarzonian Parliament convenes, and the John Paul Stevens Building, where Sarzonia's Supreme Judicial Court presides. Unlike many countries with bicameral legislatures including a Senate, Sarzonia's House of Delegates is actually the upper chambre. Delegates are elected for no more than three two-year terms; Senators may serve no more than two six-year terms; the President may serve no more than two six-year terms.

The city also includes various museums and the Max Yasgur Centre for the Performing Arts, which is a go-to concert venue in Sarzonia and has been since the country became independent. It features a subway system that's fast and efficient and runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Among the more popular areas of Woodstock are the Little Catherina district, which contains the largest concentration of Delaclav ex-pats within Sarzonia and some of the best baked goods Sarzonia has to offer. The Little Timiocato neighbourhood is also very popular with Pacitalian cuisine dominant in restaurants throughout the neighbourhood.

The sporting crown jewel of Sarzonia is the Dave Wilson Athletic Complex and Dave Wilson Stadium, the national stadium of Sarzonia, which seats 105,900. It will be the home of Group 1 matches.

Nicksia Profile
Sarzonia's largest city has long been the cultural capital of The Incorporated States and is the centre of the country's creative scene. The city takes its name from Fleetwood Mac singer and solo singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks. The city boasts a population of 14.6 million people with a large district named Rhiannon that boasts an array of coffee shops, cafes, and contains a historic section with replicas of cobblestone streets. A row of taverns and pubs lines one set of streets.

The historic district includes the site of the old Nicksia Stock Exchange, which closed down in the mid-2000s when the country's financial centre moved to Portland with the ascent of the Portland Iron Works among the world's leading military contractors. The building was used for a while as a location for satellite PIW offices until the Benatar Historical Society acquired the building with funding from Sarzonia's Division of Culture. It also includes the "southern Gray House" where late founding President Mike Sarzo once convalesced after being diagnosed with cancer.

Nicksia's sporting jewels are highlighted by Mike Sarzo Stadium, a retractable roof stadium with a natural grass pitch and a transparent retractable roof that allows sunlight in to provide nourishment for the grass. The stadium has a statue of founding Sarzonian President Mike Sarzo at the main entrance on Putnam Avenue. The stadium seats 77,910 and was recently renovated with solar panels and upgraded with the latest big screens, LED displays, and free Wifi access. The newly constructed Bank of Sarzonia Arena is in competition with the venerable Palestra in Woodstock for the status of home court for the Sarzonian national basketball team.

Visitors can attend the Naval History Museum near The Pier where people traveling between Sarzonia and Delaclava can also rent motor and sailboats for day trips between the two countries. Visitors can see the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship still afloat and the only commissioned warship in the Incorporated Sarzonian Navy without the ISS prefix. The ISS Rampage, a light aircraft carrier from Sarzonia's earliest days is also among the ships on display. It is surrounded by the Old Port neighbourhood with a collection of rustic-looking taverns that also includes souvenir shops.

Aficionados of live music can get their fix at the Mabel Normand Centre for the Performing Arts five nights a week. Thursday nights are open mic nights where the house band allows any aspiring musicians to try out singing live. The Crystal Visions Palace offers free music lessons to anyone regardless of age or ability. Actors can play their trade in a supportive environment at the Sea of Love Thespian Centre.

Group 2 matches will be played at Mike Sarzo Stadium.

Portland Profile
The home of the venerable Portland Iron Works, a defence contractor that originally sold naval ships, but became large enough to acquire the Wilmington Shipyard Corporation, which sold hospital ships and other logistics supplies, among other contractors. The city became the financial capital with the continued ascent of the PIW, and moved to the Portland Stock Exchange building, which is the centrepiece of the city's Finance District. Guided tours for countries friendly to Sarzonia are available for a fee. The Portland Iron Works building has a statue of its first CEO, Admiral Barbara Tucker in front of it. The street for the PIW campus is named Admiral Tucker Boulevard.

The city also has an Old Port area, featuring a large collection of boating for people who want to take boats out for fishing or for just being on the open water. Some of the country's prime seafood restaurants call the Old Port home. A highly advanced light rail shuttles people between Portland itself and the growing neighbouring city Corcorran, which was named after the Delaclav city that is the largest city near Sarzonia.

The city just finished construction on a brand new Iron Bowl to replace the venerable structure that once hosted Sarzonian football home matches. The building seats 70,165 for football and will be the home of Group 3 fixtures.

Wilmington Profile
The city that was once at the forefront of shipbuilding industry in Sarzonia on the strength of the Pasteur-class hospital ships that were its backbone, Wilmington has evolved into an eclectic city representing a wide variety of Sarzonian life. It's best known for its shipping and beachfront areas, along with hospitality that's second to few places within Sarzonia. Wilmington also is a major presence in Sarzonia's sporting history with it being among the "big four" of Sarzonian sports cities. Wilmington will host Group 4 fixtures at Shipyard Stadium, which seats 62,758.

Cultural Notes

Sarzonians are polite, but can be a little reserved and sometimes aloof when they meet strangers. However, once they get to know people, they can open up and let their guard down.

The currency in Sarzonia is the Sarzonian dollar. There is no $1 bill. The one dollar coin has a picture of founding President Mike Sarzo on the obverse.

After reaching the final of the first edition the heroes who managed to do this were nominated again.

The first winners of the Kriegiersien cup after the nuclear war, Team Bunker 70436, a legendary team.
Reinforced was the squad in the first Masters by Timon Robert-Haudels, the first winning a championship as coach for the presidents club Timesteam, former National team player, voted midfielder and defender of the year in Kriegiersien and relative of the president.

But this time further replacement players were introduced and even a team doctor.

Marco Wimmer (52) Was once the fastest player in Kriegiersien and played half of his life for the presidents club Timesteam. He then ended his career playing in lower leagues.

Medical:
Dr. Jack Ill Who also helped the Basketball team to success

Sarzonia Senior Stars

ImageImageImage
Note: Home kits have a primarily navy colour scheme; away kits are primarily white; keeper kits are green.

Style Modifier: +1
Permissions: No killing, no major injuries. Otherwise, yes

Manager Tyrone Manningham, 65
Manningham retired 20 years ago after a career as a manager in the Sarzonian Football Confederation, leaving after his team failed to advance to the Cyanea Joint League for three consecutive seasons. Prior to that, his teams advanced from fourth division through to the SFC in six years.

Assistant Manager Jill Nelsen, 43
This is her first international competition after serving as a manager in the Sarzonian Football League, which was absorbed into the SFC. The SFC has just announced it will launch under the name Sarzonian Football League. Nelsen will work with the offensive side of the football.

Goalkeepers Coach Troy Perkins, 46
The starting goalkeeper on the first Sarzonian national football team, Perkins agreed to come back to help out with this seniors team.

ROSTER (staters in bold}

GOALKEEPERS
1 Will Brantley, 5'11" 165 pounds, 38
Brantley was the starting goalkeeper on the last Sarzonian national football team prior to its 27-Cup absence from the international stage.

27 Joel A'Hearn, 6'2" 225 pounds, 36
A'hearn was projected to be a future starting goalkeeper for the Stars prior to the country's decision to enter into a period of isolation. He retired from the SFC a couple of years ago but decided to keep his skills sharp in a recreational football league.

DEFENDERS
2 Kenny Lagerwey 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, 41
Once among the fastest players to ever play defence for Sarzonia, a combination of the natural effects of aging and a torn ACL in his left knee has slowed him down signifcantly.

4 Jill Arians, 5-foot-11, 155 pounds, 41
Arians only recently started playing football again after dropping out of college to take care of her parents when they fell ill. She leaves two young children with their father to compete for the Senior Stars.

8 Bill Wescott, 6-foot-4, 230 pounds, 49
Still big and bruising, although the sheer muscle he had at the height of his playing career has morphed a little bit into a beer gut.

23 Aiden Yang, 5-foot-10, 195 pounds, 37
Yang is the son of an entrepreneur who is looking to establish a senior football league in Sarzonia and both Yangs hope success in the World Cup of Masters will lead to a successful establishment of such a league.

14 Zoey Lawson, 5-foot-9, 145 pounds, 39
Lawson played for Sarzonia's women's league up until the day it halted operations. She still has speed and instincts.

19 Dave Spencer D 6'5", 250 pounds, 43
Big and brawny, Spencer also plays a rather physical style that can knock midfielders and forwards off their game. Trying to round his way back into playing shape after a lengthy retirement brought on by Sarzonia's period of isolation.

MIDFIELDERS
5 Tim Rodney 5'9 150 pounds, 44
Rodney played bigger than his height. On the New Jerusalem Nobles, he played a rugged fullback when the team plays a 3-5-2, but played as a defensive midfielder in a 4-4-2 alignment when the team suffered several injuries among its defensive players. With Sarzonia adopting a more attack-oriented team, he shifts up to play midfield.

9 Ettore Salivani, Jr. 5'10 155 pounds, 41
The son of former Sarzonia national team standout and Pacitalian emigre Ettore Salivani, the younger Salivani retains his father's flair, but also picked up on his mother's preternatural calm. He also has outstanding ball skill and is surprisingly adept as a defensive player.

15 Brad Tremblay 5'9 162 pounds, 37
Tremblay, 26, had trouble sticking with a team in the SFC before finally finding a home with the Portland Timbers. He is arguably the fastest player on the Stars and fires the hardest shot on the team, but his shot is not all that accurate.

20 Colin Rudolph 6'2", 215 pounds, 38
A blend of physicality and skill once gave Rudolph, a tryout with the Stars when they last hosted a World Cup. He earned it through his chemistry with other players on the squad.

7 Bill Carson, 6-foot-5, 210 pounds, 46
Carson is a pacey player even at his age, and has ball skills that would have made him a great fit for a SFC team back in the day, but alcoholism prevented him from ever seeing the pitch. He has been sober for eight years.

18 Francis Carter-Wiggins, 5-foot-5, 140 pounds, 39
Another player from Sarzonia's now-defunct women's league, she looks to be an offensive substitute when the Senior Stars need a playmaking middie.

FORWARDS
10 Zack Wilson, 6'0 213 pounds, 44
The son and grandson of Stars legends Brian and Dave Wilson developed some of his father's flair for the dramatic and led the SFC in goal scoring with 28 goals for the Portland Timbers. Pacey player who spends a lot of time in the weight room. Very difficult for smaller defenders to bring down. Currently serves as the Incorporated Football Federation chairman and is the father of Clayton Wilson.

17 Matt Lynch, 6'3", 205 pounds[/b], 42
The World Cup Hall of Fame striker was the top scorer for the Sarzonian national team during its AOCAF XIX appearance. His tall, lithe frame makes him an inviting target for more aggressive players who invariably find out he can take and dish out punishment.

25 Emilio Ruiz, 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, 36
Brings energy and pace off the substitute's bench. Pure target player.

44 Joanne Carter-Walsh, 5-foot-3, 135 pounds, 40
More of a skill forward than Ruiz, she will also be looked at for a midfield role if needed.

OOC NOTE
The weird UTF-8 characters represent holes or glitches in the space-time fabric while attempting to use PMT to reverse the players' aging to a state in which they would feel and act like they were in their mid-30s. Not exactly Doctor Strange, but close enough to it. However, one player somehow managed to come out in an unrecognizable state...

There was something different for Tyrone Manningham as he and the Sarzonian over-35 national team finalised its preparations for the second edition of the World Cup of Masters.

Expectations.

As the world's No. 1 ranked team following their victory over Kriegiersien in the final at Dave WIlson Stadium in the inaugural edition, the Senior Stars would enter this edition with a target painted squarely on their backs. They were getting set to face Rangers FC at Dave Wilson Stadium in Woodstock just a matter of days after the venue hosted the most important match since the third place playoff of World Cup 57. Even though only half the stadium's 105,900 seats were spoken for two days before the opening kickoff of this tournament, the excitement among Woodstockers was already beginning to build.

Manningham listened as stadium officials talked of a bump from people deciding on the day of the match to attend the stadium for the Senior Stars. He heard the expectations that having a team that was already a champion of this tournament would help attendance. The fact that a senior league was in the final stages of taking form also helped matters.

Still, he knew practices had to be crisp. They had to be sharp. They couldn't afford to stumble out of the gate in this World Cup of Masters the way they did in the first one. That first tournament saw 20 teams; this one has 16. That one had 10 matchdays and a total of eight group stage matches. That allowed a little room for error unlike this tournament.

"We need to be able to hit the ground running for this tournament," he said. "We've been working really hard at getting ready for this tournament and I hope that shows through on Friday night."

The team gathered after training to finalise its plans for Thanksgiving. The team decided to gather at the Woodstock Hilton a block away from the stadium, where the team decided to stay for its home matches at Dave Wilson Stadium. They would have to forego time with their families on Thanksgiving, but to a player, the team decided on gathering with their respective families after they returned from the tournament win, lose, or draw.

"It's going to suck not seeing our families on Thanksgiving," forward Matt Lynch said. "But we hope we can make this worth our while."

The Schoenwetter Herald

Sport – Football

NS World Cup of Masters II

In a with over 50.000 people filled stadium in Schoenwetter, thanks to a discount for seniors and the dissatisfaction with the results in the IAC, the first match of the Masters in Kriegiersien ended with a 4-0 against Kavagrad.
Gocher, Albertz and Ghiani (Freekick) had already made the way clear for a victory in the first halftime, before the coach even let the reserve players get their chance in the last minutes.
With Jobst Haudels making the 4-0 just before the end, he made his father very happy.
“This is my son”, he showed everyone who or who did not wanted to hear it.

Image
Jobst Haudels with the 4:0 after assist from his father Timon

With that Kriegiersien is for now first in Group 3 in front of HUELavia, who won their match also clear with 5-2.

In Group 1 title holder Sarzonia lost surprisingly 1-3 against Rangers FC, Abanhfleft beating Mavinet 3-2 and in Group 4 Sylestone blasted Space with 6-0.
Hebitaka lost 1-3 against Kohnhead in Group 2, first trying to start with B-Team players that hadn’t made the cut for the IAC, with all players younger than 35 years, before being remembered that this was a tournament for seniors over 35. Presumably they didn’t try to cheat but just taking the tournament “not too serious”.

Tyrone Manningham told reporters before his team's first match in the second World Cup of Masters that he wanted to avoid a slow start like the one that left the Sarzonian over 35 national team out of knockout round position at the halfway point of qualifying for the first edition.

Playing in front of a less than half empty Dave Wilson Stadium in Woodstock, Manningham finds his Senior Stars in the same situation after an opening 3-1 defeat to Rangers FC.

Matt Lynch scored Sarzonia's lone goal after Rangers FC built a 3-0 lead that chased Senior Stars goalkeeper Will Brantley in the 28th minute. Joel A'Hearn made four saves in his first action of the tournament.

"We were flat-footed out there," Manningham said of his team's performance. "I don't know if we ate too much turkey or what, but we definitely didn't play like we're capable of."

The 41,738 supporters inside a stadium that seats 105,900 certainly weren't given much to cheer about, and a few expressed frustration at what they described as "a glorified old timers' match." Manningham said he couldn't argue with the assessment, but he added that Rangers FC played like a team that was fighting for a spot in the knockout rounds.

"You saw one team that was fighting for three points and one team that was fighting to work off extra calories," he said.

Abanhfleft defeated Mavinet 3-2 in the other Group 1 match. The Fleftics will be Sarzonia's next opponents at Dave Wilson Stadium. In the other groups, defending finalists Kriegiersien walloped Kavagrad 4-0 in Group 3, Sylestone trashed Space 6-0 in Group 4, and HUElavia dominated their match over Rwekazaland 5-2.

Time in the boardroom may have dulled some of Incorporated Football Federation chairman Zack Wilson's physical abilities, but once the referee's whistle blows to start matches in the NS World Cup of Masters, the old rush of adrenaline kicks in.

It came at the right moment for Wilson and the rest of the Sarzonian over 35 national team as he scored the only goal of the match during the third minute of second half stoppage time to give Sarzonia a vital 1-0 victory over Mavinet in the team's second match.

The Senior Stars were looking at a disheartening draw in front of 37,838 supporters at Dave Wilson Stadium in Woodstock, in particular since Sarzonia were set to begin a three-match away excursion beginning with Abanhfleft. However, Wilson's tally allowed the Senior Stars to draw level in the table with the Fleftics.

"We played a better match than the scoreline suggested," Wilson said. "We held possession 58 percent of the time and spent quite a bit of time in the Mavinet end of the pitch."

Will Brantley returned to the Sarzonian goal after Rangers FC chased him during the opening match and he largely redeemed himself, making five saves and commanding the Senior Stars defence in a way that had been absent in the opening match.

"Everyone has bad matches once in a while managers included," said Sarzonia manager Tyrone Manningham. "Will's our starter back there. We need him."

Sarzonia (1-0-1, three points) are level in the Group 1 table with the Fleftics, who lost their match 1-0 to a surprising Rangers FC side that currently sit in first place despite playing both matches away from home. They host Mavinet in the third and final match of the first half of qualifying.

Elsewhere, Megistos and Hebitaka played to a scoreless draw and Kohnhead defeated Silvedania 3-2 in Group 2. Defending runners up Kriegiersien and newcomers Rwekazaland played to a 3-3 dra while HUElavia knocked off Kavagrad 1-0 to assume first place in Group 3. Sylestone and Damukuni played to a 2-2 draw whilst Space rebounded from an embarrassing 6-0 defeat to Sylestone with a 4-1 win over Transvolcanic.

Kriegiersien 3-3 Rwekazaland

Kai Albertz and Sissy Looper were sitting in front of a small high quality TV in the plane on their way to HUElavia.
They were watching the summary of the game of Kriegiersien against Space in the IAC.
“You think our referee in the match wasn’t good, but look at this. The referee is lying drunk on the field”, said Albertz while sipping from a glass champagne.
“Yeah and I think the linesmen don’t understand what offside is.”
Image
A striker from space already celebrating before scoring a goal, totally not standing offside

“A shame. Some nations referees are really… improvable.”

“You mean like our performance in the last match?”, growled a voice.
Coach Timon Robert Haudels was suddenly standing nearby.
“What are you two doing here in the first class?”

“We are enjoying champagne and leg space.”
“I mean, how did you get here, while the rest of the team is in the crappy class?”
“The steward is a big fan of me and upgraded us”, said Albertz, waving to the Stewart who waved back.
“I think he is my fan”, said Sissy.
“I scored three goals.”
“And I am a woman and the Top Goalkeeper.”
“I am not sure about that.”
“Oh, yeah, replace me with our second Goalkeeper. Oh, wait. We have none.”

“Maybe I’ll try that position again. You did get a bit too many goals in the last match”, Haudels interfered.
“I can’t stop every shot, espacially penalty are hard”, Sissy said insulted, taking another sip.

“Ok. You are having fun. Good for you. But in the next game I want to see everyone work his ass off. Defense, midfield and Goalkeeper”, Haudels said, going back to his seat.
“I think he isn’t content with your performance”, Albertz smugly said.
“And the strikers could help back in the midfield a bit instead of standing offside half of the time, too”, Haudels shouted on his way, with the back to him.
“Well, another champagne and then: Forza to HUELavia!”, Sissy sniggered.

In a hotel lobby a big TV-Screen showed the match between Kriegiersien and HUELavia.

All players sprawled on couches or seats, while their coach Haudels tried to show their errors to them, scribbling on a notice board close to the TV.

“And there you have to hand over your opponent and block the path. We have giant holes in the middle!”, he explained.

Some chuckled.

Gert Lessels bend over to Wilhelm Freesinger, who was sitting beside him, whispering:

“Yo. We should have won the game.”
“I am with you”, approved Freesinger quietly.
“We shouldn’t have gotten 3 goals.”
“Yep.”
“After we were leading, they should have stopped counting the goals.”
“Yep. Wait. What?”
“If there had been no goals after our 3:0 we would have easily won this.”
“True.”

“Don’t make such dangerous passes in the defense, better kick the ball far away, instead of making a dangerous pass or dribbling if you are under pressure”, Haudels demanded.

“Also some of the other players were dead”, said Lessels.
“There were Zombies? They all looked pretty alive for me”, said Freesinger.
“They shouldn’t have been allowed to score.”
“Why? We have Zombies in our nation who are allowed to do everything.”
“And the referees. They were on the side of HUELavia.”
“Sometimes I thought that too.”
“One of them confirmed that to me.”
“Really? Which one?”
“The one in blue.”
“There was no referee in blue.”
“The elephant with the blue trousers and his friends, the white mice.”
“Oh.”

“And there must always be one player attacking the ball. No, not the ball itself, the opponent player with the ball. They always have to feel pressured…”, Haudels went on.

“It think we haven’t lost. We have to fight. We can’t let HUELavia get away with the point”, Lessels whispered.
“Uhm. The match is over.”
“No it isn’t not until I say it is.”
Freesinger blinked and turned off his hearing aid.
He looked at the scenes on the screen, the lecture of the coach, his seatmate blubbering and nodded in both directions from time to time.

“And Wilhelm, your one back pass lead to a goal for HUELavia. For that I hope you are spending a drink for everyone. And one for every goal against Kavagrad”, Haudels said.

Wilhelm Freesinger nodded.

The break halfway through the competition was welcome for the Sarzonian over 35 national team.

Even though the Senior Stars won their last two matches and put themselves back in knockout round contention with the results, manager Tyrone Manningham was realistic about what the respite meant.

"These players aren't exactly in the prime of their athletic lives right now," he said. "We don't have a Laborious Hawk on this team."

Or managing it, Manningham thought. He thought about blowing out 66 candles on his birthday cake on 10th December. He may not have appeared a step slower than he was when he last plied his trade as a football manager, but he felt like he was.

The Senior Stars arrived at the team hotel for the second of three consecutive away matches with enough time to gear up for a team dinner at a nearby restaurant. In the old days, it would have been capped off by excursions to local clubs and drunken Guitar Hero marathons until all hours of the night.

Now? The team's main Guitar Hero star was in his room two hours before the team's 2300 curfew on his mobile. Instead of fending off female suitors, he was busy studying video of Rangers FC and looking for ways to adjust to their defence against him. By 2315, the light in the room Matt Lynch shared with reserve goalkeeper Joel A'Hearn was off.

In fact, the only person involved with the team who was awake was assistant manager Jill Nelsen, and she was awake because she was checking to ensure players weren't violating curfew. Even Manningham was asleep.

Rangers FC had yet to lose a match thus far, and in order to be the first team to send them to defeat, the Senior Stars wanted to be well rested. Time would tell if that would benefit them.

Kavagrad 0-2 Kriegiersien
Goals:
Di Bradini77 (12.) J.Haudels (81.)

The bar in a hotel lobby in Rwekazaland was filled with the Kriegiersien players celebrating their last victory again, only Wihelm Freesinger looking a bit worried about what his teammates ordered.

The coach tried to get the team together.

“Guys, guys! Attention please. That was a really good last match..”

“Yay!”, they agreed, raising glasses and bottles.

“But..but we have to think about the next match. Against Rwekazaland we just have to draw and we are through. So I have a new match plan. We should play more defensive. I thought about a 5-4-1. We are waiting to counter. Marco as only fast striker and Jobst later as joker.”

The players were confused.
“We already did a good job last time. No goal against. Why change that now?”
“What is about this Pressing you said last time?”
“I want more beer.”
“I made two hat-trick in the games before, why can’t I play?”, complained Albertz.

“Jobst and Marco are the faster, younger players. And we only need one point. A 0-0 would be enough. You want to go to Sarzonia again and win the whole thing. Don’t you? And you two get some more rest, Kai and Marc.”

The players weren’t convinced.

Wilhelm Freesinger coughed.
“If you take over the last and next rounds of drinks, I am ok with that.”
Haudels considered and then nodded.
“Ok, but I want everyone be fit in the last training session tomorrow”, he said.

Everyone cheered.

Matt Lynch stood at the penalty spot in the 88th minute. The Sarzonian over 35 national team were comfortably in front in the 88th minute with a 2-0 lead over Rangers FC as what remained of the home crowd was booing.

The Senior Stars dominated possession, controlling the ball 61 percent of the time to Rangers FC's 39 percent. Lynch had already notched a 38th minute goal and assisted on Zack Wilson's 47th minute tally. He was the beneficiary of what turned out to be a missed tackle inside the area that led to the Kriegiersien referee pointing to the spot for a penalty.

He thought about his next strike, realising that a goal would give Sarzonia a likely three-goal margin of victory that would erase any advantage the upstarts had over the Stars heading into the match. Senior Stars manager Tyrone Manningham had bemoaned his team's 3-1 opening match defeat to this team that hadn't even identified their players by submitting a roster to tournament officials. A two-goal victory would have pushed the tiebreaker to the next rung, overall goal differential. A goal from the spot here would have given Sarzonia the edge in the second tiebreaker, head to head goal differential.

He looked at the Rangers FC goalkeeper, guessing that his first move would be to his right, so he decided to fire to the goalkeeper's left. Sure enough, Lynch guessed correctly and watched him leap the wrong way. Boom. Goal. Three-nil. Even a last-ditch effort to get one back on the scoresheet went for naught. Soon enough, the final three bursts of whistle from the referee meant the match was over. Sarzonia prevailed 3-0, giving the Senior Stars sole possession of first place in Group 1. The home side were still in knockout round position, but they would be the runners up if the group stage ended now.

Sarzonia (3-0-1, nine points) now found themselves in a position where they could easily punch their tickets into the knockout rounds as a first place side. If they won their match against Mavinet, they would clinch a spot in the knockouts. A win and a Rangers FC draw with or loss to Abanhfleft would clinch the group title and a top-four seed in the quarterfinals. If the Senior Stars finish level in the Group 1 table, they will win the group by virtue of the second tiebreaker, which Lynch ensured with his penalty kick tally.

"We seem to be rounding into better form," Manningham said of his team's three-match winning streak. "We still haven't punched our tickets yet, but we're looking a lot better than we did."

Last match in the qualification for the World Cup of Masters for the Kriegiersien team in Schoenwetter.

Before leaving to Sarzonia to play the World Cup over there, one last match against HUElavia will decide who will become first of Group 3.
To avoid the other teams at the first place, like host and title defender Sarzonia, a win or at least a draw to secure the first spot would be helpful.

“Of course we want to give the people a great show before travelling to Sarzonia”, ensured Coach Haudels.

After the debacle at the IAC, where the Kriegiersien team ended without a point, the focus is now fully shifted to the team playing at the masters. The hope for a full house in the Schoenwetter Stadium is given.

Before the Sarzonian over 35 national team made their trip to Woodstock to play the final match of the group stage against Abanhfleft, the Senior Stars already knew they would have some extra time at the team hotel.

The team's 2-1 victory over Mavinet officially clinched the Group 1 title when coupled with Rangers FC's 2-2 draw with Abanhfleft. The results also ensured a trip to Sarzonia for Rangers FC.

Still, even Mavinet were all but eliminated from the prospect of earning a place among the final eight teams in the tournament, they didn't make things easy for Tyrone Manningham's team. The home side actually took a one-nil lead into the dressing room at halftime with a near-capacity crowd cheering them on. Hold on to beat the Senior Stars and get a good result from the Rangers FC-Abanhfleft match and Mavinet could keep the drama alive heading into the group stage finale.

However, Matt Lynch and Zack Wilson weren't having it. Lynch struck first in the 57th minute with a laser from just outside the 18-yard box that recalled the glory days of Guitar Hero-punctuated post-match celebrations of the past. He turned to goalkeeper Will Brantley and pointed, explaining that he said, "I got you, mate," as encouragement after Brantley was beaten in the 16th minute.

With just over a quarter hour remaining in regulation, it was Wilson's turn. The four previous matches and the first 75 minutes of this one helped the Incorporated Football Federation chairman get a semblance of his match fitness back and he was able to sky for a header that put his team ahead and provided the final margin of victory.

"We've still got something to fight for," Manningham said when he was asked if he intended to start his depth players and give Joel A'Hearn his first start of the World Cup of Masters. "The top overall seed. A chance to show Dave Wilson Stadium that we deserve a full house."

They won't get that full house against the Fleftics, but they're hoping for strong numbers for the knockout rounds. After today, they knew officially they'd be playing the quarterfinals in Woodstock. The other winners will play their matches at the Iron Bowl in Portland (Group 2), Mike Sarzo Stadium in Nicksia (Group 3), and Shipyard Stadium in Wilmington (Group 4).

Regardless, they will live on at least one more match.
