THE NATIONAL PARTY ELECTS NEW LEADER AHEAD OF ELECTIONS

The Sloverti Elections are to be held on the sixth of December, among some of the most surprising news of the day was that on today, the day that campaigning began The Sloverti National Party released its manifesto and revealed its new leader. In 2015, the year of the previous general election the decade of National Party rule came to and end due in part to a tired leadership that had grown out of touch with the populace.

The National Party’s decline had been forecast for quite a while. In the 2010 general election the party went from 72 to 46 seats in The National Assembly but yet it stuck with Bórna Vulksar as its leader despite polls showing increasing discontent with his leadership. In 2010 The Sloverti National Party was forced into a coalition with the Sloverti People’s Party . In the 2015 general election the National Party had their worst show at a general election in twenty years as they returned only 26 seats To the National Assembly. Vulksar announced that he would be stepping down as party leader and there was hope among many National Voters that a new fresh leader would be chosen. This was not the case.

The Party elected Mra Ceresson who was a long time Party member and one of Vulksar’s chief advisers. The announcement was met with disdain from National Voters and there was little hope for the general election of 2020.

Ceresson was possibly the most loathed National Party leader there has been and leading up to the start of the campaign it was clear to the Party that if they had any chance of a come back this year they would have to elect a new leader. Voting on a new Party leader was delayed and it was only today on the day that campaigning started that it was revealed that Verny Pristáv, Assembly Member for Ziprata South ould be the new leader of the Sloverti National Party.

Pristáv is young, in touch with the people and adored by the National Party base, but he is coming across an extremely popular Sloverti Labour Party with Rupert Wilmar at its helm and a Green party which has been polling well consistently. He too has been polling well, it is accepted that he will have to form a coalition with The Sloverti People’s Party if he has any chance of getting into office but his arrival has given those in The National Party camp hope.

LIBERAL PARTY FURIOUS AT DEBATE SNUB

The Sloverti Elections are looming and with that came the announcement that Národná Vysielacia Spoločnosť Slovertská or NVSS the nation’s main broadcasting corporation would be holding the first election debate in Slovertia’s history. All of the main political parties would be present, except the Liberal Party who claim that until yesterday they remained uninvited.

Liberal Assembly Members and Supporters alike voiced their concern. This was only amplified when the director of the NVSS Simon Varnáss told the media that the Liberal Party did not meet the right criteria to be a part of the debate. As a result of this both The Green Party leader Andróv Machmann and the Labour leader Rupert Wilmar claimed that they would not attend the debate if The Liberal Party were snubbed.

Other parties such as The National Party and its new leader Verny Pristáv used the kerfuffle to his advantage as he claimed that NVSS were right, he even went as far as to say that The Liberal Party were not even a proper political Party. He was joined in this by members of The Sloverti People’s Party. Eventually The Liberal Party were admitted to The Debate which was held last night and drew record audiences from across Slovertia.

The main two fixtures of The Debate were Pristáv and Wilmar who grabbed the most attention as they shouted at each other from across the room on issues such as Education, the Economy and a new Mazurian Language legislation. The Green Party leader Andróv Machmann also impressed as he shot down any attempts to discredit his party’s role in government over the past five years.

Polls suggest that the majority of people in Slovertia thought that Wilmar performed better in the Debate than Pristáv who ended up coming third in the poll behind Machmann. It was a disappointing night for all those who thought that The new National leader would bring a fresh take to his party’s rhetoric as he seemed to repeat the same lines that Sloverti National leaders have been repeating for the last decade.

WILMAR STAYS

The Sloverti Elections were held last night as a record number of people flooded into polling booths around the nation. But for many National Party supporters it was not the night that they had hoped for. Whilst losing seats for the first time since 2005 going from 62 to 57 seats the new National Leader Verny Pristáv simply could not pull together enough support to topple his opposition.

It wasn’t all bad for The National Party. They managed to reclaim some of their seats from the Greens and People’s Party after their disastrous election in 2015, Pristáv’s party went from 26 to 37 seats. National hopes had been much higher as this new young leader had promised to bring them back into government, but it was not to be.

The Sloverti Labour Party led by Rupert Wilmar the Prime Minister will stay in government as it was announced that the Green-Labour coalition would still be in place for his next term in office. However Labour showed cracks in some of the seats that it narrowly won in 2015. Most notably it lost 5 seats in the Municipalities of Ziprata and Severska all were lost to The National Party. This is a worrying sign for The Sloverti Labour Party.

The Sloverti Green Party lost seats as well as it fell from 24 to 18 seats, again all were lost to The National Party. The Liberal Party on the other hand gained seats. They managed to recover their disastrous losses from 2015. Many credit this to a change in Party leadership and ethos which made them more appealing to the youth vote. The People’s Party losing ground due to the surge in National Party support lost 4 of its seats to the Liberal Party in Kojbakvy and Four South Mazurian municipalities.

Wilmar addressed the nation at around midnight last night where he announced that the Labour-Green coalition would continue and that he was looking forward to serving the Sloverti People for another five years, Wilmar will stay in Risí street for another five years to the jubilation of some and the sorrow of others.

LABOUR FRACTURE LEADS TO NEW PARTY

Ursula Svoboda joined the Sloverti Labour Party in 2001 a year after the general election which saw the Sloverti Labour Party gain the most seats in the National Assembly in its history. Under the then Labour leader Miroslav Mráz Svoboda rose through the ranks eventually becoming Minister of Agriculture in 2004. She was at the forefront of the failed re-election in 2005 which was a huge blow to her aspirations and goals for the future.

Svoboda started to diverge from the ideals of the Sloverti Labour Party as it moved to try and reinvent itself to become more moderate and centrist. Svoboda being an adamant Socialist voiced a great deal of opposition to the party’s fresh direction. She stood for party leadership in 2010 and 2015 both times she was defeated. In 2015 after she was beaten to the party leadership by current Prime Minister Rupert Wilmar. She left the party claiming that she would found her own party which would as she put it “be the party that the Labour Party was meant to be.” It was not until recently that Svoboda actually followed up on her promise.

Just before the Labour Party conference in 2020, six months before Rupert Wilmar was to bid for re-election four members of the Sloverti Labour Party Victor Komár, Bernard Kováč, Trevor Pekár and Sarah Biely left the party. All four were far-left leaning and had been amongst the most critical of Wilmar’s government. It was not until a few weeks before the election that it was announced that they would be joining Ursula Svoboda and her new party.

Although the fact that Svoboda’s new party was going ahead it was not until recently that it was officially registered. The party is called the Socialist Union of Slovertia (Socialistická únia Slovertská) and its first time on the ballot will be during the Kojbakvy mayoral election which is set to happen in July this year. Although the party is not polling well as of yet it could see some success in flipping some hardline Labour seats.

GOVERNMENT ISSUES WARNING AFTER NUMEROUS INCIDENTS IN THE SREBROGORAS

The Sloverti government has issued several warnings to climbers intending to scale the various peaks of the Serbrogora mountain range in northern Slovertia. Last week in the summer heat there were several cases of ill-prepared climbers collapsing due to heat stroke and exhaustion. This led to thd Sloverti government’s decision to close off several peaks to public access which were deemed too dangerous and challenging for the multitude of climbers attempting to scale Slovertia’s many impressive mountains in the area.

Today it was reported that two climbers have gone missing close to the Sloverti-Nikolian border. Rescue services have been on high alert throughout the day. The Sloverti Prime Minister Rupert Wilmar has said he will contact the Nikolian government to see if a cross-border search can be attempted, he claimed he will do everything in his power to ensure that the two climbers come home safely.

The climbers in question are Helena Kľúčiar and Ján Mokrý who were both planning to go hill walking on the border between Slovertia and Nikolia, they left their campsite at 9 am but did not arrive back in the afternoon or evening. At 6 am this morning Mokrý’s rucksack was found on one of the hiking trails and the rescue services were eventually called. So far there has been no further spotting of either of the two or any of their belongings, it is believed that they may have crossed the border into Nikolia. Both climbers were from Ziprata in the Stredna region of Slovertia and were seasoned hikers having travelled to a number of countries to do various walks and climbs. It is still not known what has caused them to end up missing although there is still hope that they can be found and brought to safety.

The Prime Minister has stated that he will attempt to open talks with his Nikolian counterpart to see if a cross border search and rescue operation can be achieved. If so it may increase the chances of finding Kľúčiar and Mokrý tenfold.

This week in Brativas an arson attack on a Sloverti owned shop in the majority Mazurian north side of the city has led to a re-opening of old wounds that many thought had been left firmly in the past. The attack led to violent clashes between Slovertis and Mazurians on the streets of the capital for the first time in over fifteen years. But the division in Brativas was never fully reconciled compared to the rest of the country. More effort must be made on both sides of the river to overcome this and ensure that scenes like those that occurred this week never happen again.

In Brativas the Stará rieka acts as a border between the majority Mazurian north side of the city where Mazurians make up 65% of the population and the majority Sloverti south side where Slovertis make up 85%. When travelling to the northern side the divisions between the two groups are made abundantly clear. Bilingual street signs have the Sloverti language scratched or scored out, a statue of the monarch Aleksander III often seen as a national symbol has been defaced and police have had to intervene in several attempts to tear it down, signs in shops and bars all display signs stating “We won’t speak Sloverti!”. On the south side divisions take a similar path. Students at a Mazurian language school in the south of the city were reportedly spat on by members of the public walking home from school.

This is not acceptable in the capital of our nation. Brativas is a beautiful place with more to offer than violence and divides. It took an embarrassingly long amount of time for the Prime Minister Rupet Wilmar to even acknowledge the events never mind condemn them. This is a worrying trend amongst Sloverti politicians who seem to believe that if they just don’t acknowledge the issue it will go away.

There are brilliant efforts being made by people across the city through charities and community groups to foster a sense of understanding between the two groups that share Brativas, realising that the other side aren’t so different is the first step towards reconciliation.

I haven’t had to write something like this since the 90’s. We know that violence brings nothing but suffering and pain. We know that we can’t go down this path again.
