Welcome to the first edition of the Sepak Takraw World Cup! Hosted in Squidroidia, a country with Sepak Takraw traditions, this tournament will showcase the 24 best Sepak Takraw teams from all over the multiverse, with one being crowned the inaugural Sepak Takraw World Champions.

Since this is the first edition of the tournament, I recommend you to go over the Sepak Takraw rules if you haven't learned them already. A good video to watch is Ninh Ly's video on the sport. It is 5 years old but still explains the rules in a timely manner.

Permissions in Sepak Takraw are shorter than in other sports (Mainly due to the lack of disciplinary actions as far as I know) but the same bases are covered. Point scorers can be used for key points during the game (Highlights, regu winning points and match winning points). Injuries can be placed on a player, but most, if not all people will not be okay with one of their players having a career ending injury. Godmodding is exactly what you think it is - RPing absurd moments in the match (From insane scoring plays to injuries to whatever you may cook up that may or may not be in the realm of possibility), although most people have their limits on godmodding. Asking people to TG about injuries or godmodding or whatnot can also be done.

Welcome to Squidroidia!

Squidroidia, the host nation of the first Sepak Takraw World Cup, welcomes all of you to its beautiful, squiddy arms for this tournament. Sepak Takraw in Squidroidia is a traditional, Inkling played sport - Hence why the Squidroidian national team and officials are all Inklings themselves - But the minority of the country's population like to play their sport with other beings, and often play with or against other species, including charity matches against Squidroidian celebrities. Nevertheless, the Inklings, as well as the humans, will be kind with you all during the tournament, or indeed any time you arrive in Inkopolis for your vacation in the country.

Arriving to Squidroidia is simple, with Squidroidia Air providing flights to Inkopolis Airport from most major countries. Due to the demand in tourism, however, most airlines are also welcome to operate flights to Inkopolis Airport from their hub airports as well. Upon exiting customs, there is much to do in the city - Explore the famous Inkopolis Tower, the landmark symbol of the city and the entire country, catch a football game at the Inkopolis City Stadium, or dine at numerous establishments throughout town, serving traditional Squidroidian foods like fried shrimp, rice as well as more tourist-focused delicacies. From Inkopolis, most cities, including all of the cities for the Sepak Takraw World Cup, are easily covered via train or air, although there is a highway system connecting the country.

Mako Arena - 15,000 capacity
Hosts the Semi-Finals, 3rd Place Match and Final

The Anchovy Center, the smaller of the 2 stadiums in the capital city, is the home of Squidroidia Sepak Takraw Champions side Inklingcraft Inkopolis, but rarely gets filled aside from the SSTC Playoffs, where all matches except the Grand Final are held. Located in the Highrise Point district of the city, it is noticeable just by how small it is, but still shows you a good time, whether it is for Sepak Takraw or any other sport. This stadium will serve as the main site of Group C matches as well as the first 2 rounds of the Knockout Stage.

The Mako Arena is the biggest stadium in Inkopolis, and is located in the Polaris District. Seating 15,000 people, the venue hosts the SSTC Grand Final as well as many concerts and other major sporting events. Mako Arena is named after the Squidroidian design company Mako Designs due to sponsorship reasons, but for major events can be renamed to the Inkopolis Arena.

Calamari County

Strikers Fieldhouse - 1,500 capacity
Hosts Group A matches

The Strikers Fieldhouse is, of course, the main venue used by the Calamari County Strikers SSTC team. A small event center tucked in the north end of the county, it is most notable for county conferences held throughout the year, but isn't afraid to show out its majesty, with a garden located in front of the venue. The venue will host all games in Group A.

Souraoi

FunStar Complex Sepak Takraw Arena - 1,750 capacity
Hosts Group B matches

The most technologically advanced of the 7 venues used for the tournament, Souraoi's venue is located in the FunStar Complex, a sporting complex including a football stadium, a hockey arena for the Souraoi Sabers SHL team and the titular Sepak Takraw venue. Locals however like to call this venue the Souraoi Sepak Takraw Arena, due to FunStar sponsoring the venue. The arena is state of the art, but its low capacity prevented it to host no more than just matches for Group B.

Spartansburg

Steel Gardens - 1,100 capacity
Hosts Group D matches

The Steel Gardens in Spartansburg is the home team of Spartansburg SC Peel, named after Squidroidia's Peel beverage company. Even though the SSTC team helps out with the city league, the Steel Gardens, of course, reflects to Spartansburg's past. The stands at the 1,100 capacity venue are all steel bleachers, although steel guardrails are installed at the edge of the bleachers themselves.

Newton

Newton Arena - 1,500 capacity
Hosts Group E matches

Built specifically for the Sepak Takraw World Cup, like all the buildings in the planned city of Newton, the Newton Arena is nuclear powered to ensure clean energy. The Newton Arena will host all Group E matches, and all teams have been given their own locker room. It's small compared to the big Newton Nuclear Stadium nearby, but the Newton Arena can provide an atmosphere at time.

Starlight

Sepak Starlight Court - 1,200 capacity
Hosts Group F matches

The Sepak Starlight Court is the home of the Sepak Starliught SSTC team and will host all matches in Group F. Located near the center of Starlight, the venue uses solar energy for clean energy rather than nuclear energy like in the Newton Arena. Starlight will aim to light up the stands and the court during the matches in the STWC in order to make players more aware of their surroundings.

KRIEGIERSIEN SEPAK TAKRAW National team

As Sepak Takraw isn’t an Olympic sport there was no support to send a team to the World Cup. The players had to make their dream to get to the competition in Squidroidia come true by themselves.

The sisters Corina and Corana Wirus, fugitives from a nation far away were they hadn’t been welcome anymore and their mentor, Puu Panda, met by accident at a small tournament.
The two being fanatic fans of the fascinating sport found in Puu a master to groove in the game, becoming with him the ‘Tremendous Trio’.

Playing show matches and participating in eating contests they wandered the nation and worked hard to get the money together.

A bakery finally sponsored them the shirts to wear as jerseys at the World Cup.

Squidroidia's place in Sepak Takraw

Sepak Takraw is a traditionally Inkling focused sport in the country of Squidroidia. Steeped in the tradition of the squid-human minority who live on the land, the sport is used to symbolize the struggle of the squids that became this way long ago. Inklings are acrobatic to an extent, hence why they have been and always will be the main people from the country playing the sport. Apart from playing the game on traditional Inkling holidays, there are 3 parts to the Squidroidian Sepak Takraw season - The city leagues, the Squidroidia Sepak Takraw Champions, and the end of season LSST, where the Premiers (Regular season winners) and Grand Final Winners take on the rest of the world.

Information
As it has never appeared at the Olympics, Sepak takraw is a very unfamiliar sport in Saint-Domingue, and there are therefore no professional teams. Since the announcement of the first ever World Cup for the sport, a small amateur league was set up in the city of Le Cap to help the sport grow in the country and find a selection for the touranment. Established by Yen Anh Ly, her competition particularly appealed to the small southeast Asian community within the city and had a healthy number of competitor. As the sport has no official governing body there was no established rules for whether the country should be sending an all-male or all-female team, and so Yen Anh Ly has decided to send a mixed-sex team out to represent Saint-Domingue.

All of the sepak takraw team are amateurs and were required to raise the money themselves to cover travel expenses.

The Sport in Dachine (Dao Chonh)
An early form of sepak takraw was introduced by Southeast Asian settlers to Wishtonia, many of whom settled in and blended with the local population of Dachine. It was similar to an indigenous ancient game played over a rope called Chi Yon. It was also one of the few sports allowed by the Gaulic colonial rulers, while many of the combat sports and warrior skill demonstrations were outlawed as subversive to Gaulic rule. While there have been amateur leagues of sepak takraw and it is a popular school sport for a long time, professional sepak takraw had not been organized and initiated until much later. The first season of the current top professional league happened less than three decades ago after several other failed attempts at keeping a professional league together. The Dachinois teams in the new LSST have not fared well, but it is hoped that this all star team will better represent them in international competition.

Dryicor's participation in the inaugural Sepak Takraw World Cup was met with some scepticism from commentators, who suggested that Dryicor was not well-placed to participate. However, the Department for Culture still allowed a Dryicoran Sepak Takraw team to be founded, which has made the sport more popular throughout the Empire.

In response to a Channel 4 journalist's question of "This sport is nowhere near native to Dryicor. How will it be beneficial for Dryicor to take part?", head coach Svein Eriksen said: "We are a Nordic country and Nordic countries have a reputation for adapting to change and taking on new things. This is just another step."

DTV, Dryicor's largest television network, have signed a contract worth approximately 15 000 000 Kr (US$19,867,500) to broadcast the tournament and it will also be one of the first programmes on the DTV 4K channel.

Sepak Takraw in Sannyamathland:Well,truth be told,Sepak Takraw is a completely unknown sports among the majority of the Sannyamathlandian population.I dont even understand,how they qualified for this World Cup,but since they did,I appointed a commitee to choose a squad for the World Championships.Sadly,not even a single indigenous Sannyamathlandian was found to be eligible to make it into the squad.In fact,there is only a single Sepak Takraw club in the entire nation,all of whose members are Sannyamathlandians of foreign descent.The squad has 2 players of Thai descents and 1 Japanese and 1 Xing Xaoian descent.

Sepak Takraw, or at least a Simple Explanation

The sport of Sepak Takraw will make its debut as an international championship (Or "World Cup") style tournament in just a few short moments time as Squidroidia plans to welcome the Sepak Takraw world to its shores for the inaugural Sepak Takraw World Cup. Being hosted in 7 venues in 6 cities, traditional Sepak Takraw powers like Dachine, Sharktail and Pemecutan will take on rising newcomers like HUElavia, Saint-Domingues and Hebitaka for a chance to lift the trophy in Inkopolis. But to those who don't know the sport, what is it all about? Before Dachine and Sannyamathland kick off the tournament from Calamari County, here's a simple guide to the sport of Sepak Takraw.

Players and Positions

The sport of Sepak Takraw is done with 3 players, to Squidroidians known as the tekong, setter and the killer, on each team. Each player is assigned their own position on the court, as tekongs are usually set in the center of their half and will be served the ball by the setter with a underhand pass followed by a strike with the tekong's foot. Setters and killers are placed towards the edge of the court near the nets, and may only leave those areas after the tekong serves the ball. The setter usually sets up the attack while the killer strikes the ball into the other side of the court.

Notable players include 22 year old setter Oka Widhi Sanjaya, who plays for Pemecutan club Kerobokan Westwind, captain of the Kriegiersien team Puu Panda and Dachine tekong Anton Sem.

Legal moves

In Sepak Takraw, any touch of the ball involving the feet and head is usually allowed. While one side has the ball in their court, they're allowed 3 touches, and must get the ball to the other side in those 3 moves. Using players from Kriegiersien's and Squidroidia's teams for example, when Puu Panda gets the ball into the Squidroidian half of the court, Dylan Angus can get the ball. Dylan can use as many moves to set up the strike as he likes as long as he gets the ball back to the Kriegiersien half in 3 moves or less. Lifting the ball up with his foot and then using his head to set up Kiyoko Montague's strike counts as 2 moves, so Kiyoko has to use the remaining move to get the ball back to the Kriegersien half. If during a move the ball touches the hands, the point is given to the other team. Speaking of which...

Points and Regus

Sepak Takraw is usually divided into 3 regus, with the first team to 21 points or winning by 2 if both teams have 20 or more points winning a regu. The team that gets 2 regus will win the game, which if a team is good enough can do on the first 2 regus. If the first 2 regus are 1-1, a 3rd regu is played. The win by 2 rule is only in affect if both teams get 20 points without a winner being decided, and can go on for however long the 2 teams are separated by none or 1 point. In simple terms, a team can win a regu 21-19, but not 21-20. In the same way, a team can win
a regu 23-21, but not 23-22 or 23-20. Points can be awarded to another team if more than 3 moves are used to set up a shot, the ball touches the hands or arms, a serve hits outside the court or in the serving team's net, or if the net is at all touched. Regus or even games can be decided by a foul.

With all of that information, understanding the sport may be much easier to a newcomer.

Puu happily munched his rice balls. He had participated at a fun education and advertising video from the hosts Squidroidia to enthuse for Sepak Takraw and its first World Cup. For that he had been able to purchase some food he now enjoyed in their small hotel room.

He belched happily after the last bit and looked at his teammates. They both appeared to be sad and nearly hadn’t touch their food.

“You have to eat to stay fit and focused”, Puu said.
They didn’t really react.
“Snake attack”, he took a ball and kicked it at Carina, hitting her face.
“Ow”, said Carina quietly.
“Oh, sorry. Sorry. But.. you should head it towards Corina, not let it bounce of your face”, Puu muttered.

“Sorry”, said Carina, throwing the ball back to him.

“What is it? Because we lost? That was the first game. We will get better. And the first set was really good.”

“It is not that”, Carina said.
“I think they hate us”, added Corina.
“What? Why do you think that?”
“Every time when our opponents made points the people cheered and rejoiced. It was so loud. And sometimes when we made points or even before we served they boo.”
“We played against the host. Of course they are on their side. You must not take that seriously.”
“One time they laughed when I was hit in the face…”
“Yeah, that seems to get a repeating problem”, mumbled Puu.
“I think that was on purpose.”
“Nah! They seemed to be nice guys.”
“You don’t know..”, began Carina and then remained silent.

“Ok. What is it? There is something you haven’t told me since we know each other. I can see that it bears you down. And now we are one team. At the World Cup. We need to trust each other blind.”
Poo looked from one face to the other.
The two sisters looked at each other.

“You know where we come from?”
“You told me, yes. I don’t know much about that nation. Um, actually noting to be fair. Especially because the only people I know from there told me nothing.”
“It is a nation far far away”, Carina started and Corina took over.
“And a long time ago a cruel dictator ravaged the land. The terror must have been unspeakable, he was so cruel that most people don’t even want to mention his name. Most of his descendants changed their name because of that. But some didn’t. Their life got...hard to say at least.”

Puu stared at them.

“You probably guessed it. It is our family name. Our father thought that the name shouldn't be a curse and the people living with it, that the relatives of this monster shouldn’t have to suffer for what he did wrong and did not change his.”
“Our mother died when we were young and when father died we three children were the last of his family. We tried to take over the farm with our brother, but…”
“But in the end the hostilities got just too much. We left.”

“How about your brother?”, asked Puu.
Carina snorted.
“He thought our ‘great’ ancestor was not that bad as everyone said he was and the people should stop condemn him.”
“That really didn’t help. So we let him have his fathers farm and fled from our origin.”
“In Kriegiersien for the first time no one ever had heard from us, our story, our nation, but we always fear that people will find out. I think some people here recognized us.”

“Ah, nonsense. And even then, you are not your Grandgrand...whatever. Right?”
“But the people..”
“I am sure no one cares here. And even when some do, we can win the people for us. Think of what we learned. How much fun we brought the people in show matches. We can explain them by example how much fun the sport is, how much fun we are. Buckle up. Snake attack!”
He kicked the ball and hit Carina in the face again.
“Ow.”
“Stop hitting my sister in the face!”, Corina yelled.
“We have to work on that”, sighed Puu.

Hebitaka in Two Losses

Hebitaka began the journey in First Sepak Takraw WC in a very poor manner. Losing the first game by 2-1 sets against Frozen Forests and 2-1 and 2-1 against Sanyamathland had lead the Hebitaki down to 4th. The first game started with first set at a good position for the Forests. The team lead by 4-0 in the first few parts and soon the game went up to 19-17. From there 2 aces were scored by Burger Blom following an out from Nandan and a great Spike from Kroon for a victory of the first set for the Frozen Forests. The second set went well for Hebitaka. The team began well to gain an advantage of 13-5 in the beginning. The Frozen Forest tried to comeback, but the game was soon done at 21-14 for the win of Hebitaka. The final set was a deciding one. As both team were close, but soon the Forest started dominating winning the set 21-17 and the match 2-1.

“Have you seen my roundhouse kick at the end of the first set?”
Carina reenacted it in the changing room.
“Yes, I was standing behind you”, said Puu.
“Or when they were blocking me all three and I just tipped the ball beside their ‘wall’. And their faces. Where is the ball? Where is it?”, said Corina, mimicking them looking around with open mouth.
“When I hit one of them in the face. That was funny!”

“Yeah, when it happens to someone else it is funny, right?”, commented Puu.

Carina looked a bit ashamed.

“But the crowd loved it, they were cheering us on at the end and at the long rallies. Oohs and aahs. The applause. It was so great.”

“Yes, it was. And we should be happy about that. And humble. That we are allowed to do this sport. And now lets get lunch! I think I have seen were we can get fried shrimps down the road.”
“Of course you have”, laughed Corina.

They had just left Anchovy Center when they were stopped by an enthusiastic looking man.

“You were so great. Can I have an autograph?”, he spluttered.
He gave them autograph cards to sign.
“For whom?”
“Oh, just your signature.”
Both girls scribbled their names on the papers.
“And maybe some more?”, he gave them further ones.
“Haven’t I just seen you in the Center? Were they already gave you autographs?”, said Puu, feeling a bit ignored.
“I am a big fan. I saw you playing in Scorpion City.”
“So, you are from Kriegiersien?”
“Yes, I flew all the way here to see you playing. With a special ‘Touristtraveltour for Seniors’”
“You don’t look that old.”
“After we landed here I left the group to see the games”, he said while trying to get an autograph card back from Corina, who hold on to it.
“Just a moment”, she said, showing him the card, “What is this?”
“It is a photo from you. I made it when you were playing in Scorpion City.”
“I am naked.”
“Yes?”
“And you can see everything in this shot.”
“A very dynamic scene, yes.”
“And you have some more of these autographs”, Carina looked at a suitcase at his side.
“I made some”, said the man, hesitating.
“But none from me? I am the captain of the team”, grumbled Puu.

“Look”, Carina said. “In your...our nation nudity is normal, forced even. We really had problems with that at the beginning.”
“Especially in the winter”, sighed Corina.
“But ok, we weren’t prudes. And after a while you adapt. It becomes normal when everyone is naked outside. But photos of that? And in some nations nudity has a certain attraction. In some nations it is banned.”
She flapped the card into the face of the man.
“You are selling them here, right?”
“There are many foreign people who are fans of your .. playing style.”
“Sure”, scoffed Corina.
“Ok. Maybe for some people the pictures from natural Kriegiersien also have a special appealing. But why not? What is the harm in that?”
“The harm is that you did that without our permission. And making money out of that.”
“I have to fund my travel here. How else could I follow you to the World Cup? I am your greatest fan. And of the sport.”
“You are financing your travel with that?”
“I get 10 shiny things per card.”

The two sisters exchanged looks. Then they took him in the middle.
“We wanted to go to a restaurant and eat something. How about you buy us a meal with your new acquired riches and we talk about a business idea? With some changes that makes everyone happy”, Corina said.
“What’s your name”, asked Carina.
“Stan”, said the man, looking a bit uncertain.
“Don’t you have cards from me?”, asked Puu, who still felt left behind.
“Of course. But… well .. I sold only two...so… ”, stuttered Stan.
“I take an extra portion shrimps”, grumbled Puu.
