Earlier today I reported on the Issues Spoiler thread that there is a fourth option to issue #32, whose text seems to be identical to that shown in that thread for the third option. I have now selected that option, and the talking point is identical to that for the third option: "there have been reports of people marrying housepets". The policy Polygamy was added, but not Marriage Equality, which the nation in question already had.

I saved the XML I received as a result of making this choice, if it is of any use to you.

Thanks!

So that effect line can actually be gotten on multiple occasions throughout the chain. You can get #1376, which has the effect line on option 2, but choose not to get it by picking option 1 instead, answer two more issues, and then get a second chance for the same effect line on #1379.

And that's not counting socialists, who get it on #1398, a much later stage in the storyline.

After #1379, Option 3, I got #1381. Any other theories about how to get to #1380? If not from this branch, I'll try to get another effect line on #1382 from this chain.

If you got #1381, then it should be too late to get #1380. I'm pretty sure the chain doesn't go backwards in numbers. I mean, there's no technical restriction preventing that from happening, but the editors have always avoided doing it in past chains, and it's a prudent design choice to avoid accidental infinite loops.

I don't have much else to go on for #1380... which is itself a clue. I suspect that #1380 is an "almost the same issue with only a slight difference" of either #1379 or #1381 (much like how #1394/#1395 works for socialists), which means that it would be a followup to one of the options that I currently incorrectly have listed as leading to one of those two. Based on the reported texts, I think #1378 3 (leads to either #1379 or #1380) is the most like candidate.

Well, that's one more guess disproved, so that puts me back in the range of "I have no clue whatsoever".

(Also sorry for the typo in my post, I meant #1379, not #1389, so your report isn't totally unexpected, just inconvenient.)

#1378 option 1 has also been confirmed as leading to #1379 by Jutsa and Fauxia, and I'm pretty certain that the only difference between #1378 1 and #1378 2 is whether you have the @@LEADER@@ field set, so I think we can rule that issue out as a source. #1376 is also well-attested as leading to #1377 next, regardless of your choice, even though that choice turns out to matter shortly later.

So that leaves... #1376 2, and then trying each option on the version of #1377 that follows? (That's worth taking a closer look at anyway, there must be hidden-option-number shenanigans.)

That's... not entirely unexpected since I saw the issue text. It's just a second chance to do what you were offered in #1379.

Please confirm that this still leads to #1385 as the next issue. After that, I think I have the matter of #1382 closed.

We still need #1380, but I don't have any great ideas on how to do that. We also need to report the version of #1377 that occurs after you select #1376 2, which presumably has option variants 4-6 instead of 1-3 in order to be able to send you to #1381 instead of #1378. The two problems may or may not be related (maybe some of those options point to #1380 and some point to #1381).

So #1376 2 would be my recommendation. It might also be worth testing if your choice on #1375 (other than the last option) afects your path, but I don't think so.

Also I could use a confirmation on the effect line for #1401 2 on the socialist side (path: #1398 2 -> #1400 1 or #1398 1 -> #1399 1 -> #1400 1, earlier choices shouldn't matter), but I think I know what it is. Actually, I'll go enter it now.

We also need to look for hidden options on #1390 (path that's compatible with the above: #1381 1 -> #1382 1/2 -> (#1384) -> #1385/#1386 1/3 -> #1388 -> #1389 -> #1390) and presumably its equivalent #1405 (path: #1398 1 -> #1399 2/3, which is unfortunately mutually exclusive with confirming #1401 2). Problem is I don't have much of a clue what determines the variants you get.

#1377: For @@LEADER@@’s Ears Only

The Story So Far

Secret agent James Bont has been sent to San Vitenzo with orders to infiltrate the missile installation sites.

The Issue

As you are heading toward yet another meeting, you receive a phone call from N, your Minister of Intelligence, who has news from James Bont and needs to speak with you about his mission.

The Debate

1. [internal number: 3] “Good morning, boss,” proclaims the steady voice of your spy chief. “Bont reported that he was able to steal a missile technician’s uniform and security badge that may allow him to enter the enemy bases undetected. However, there’s been a small... complication. We believe that one or more enemy agents are aware of his presence. They’re probably too dangerous to ignore. Do you want to give Bont a free hand to neutralize the threat? A few bullets should take care of... wait, did you hear that clicking sound? I hope this phone isn’t bugged. Code Blue, @@LEADER@@.” N hangs up, leaving you bewildered.

2. [internal number: 4] After staring at your phone for a few seconds, you feel your right shoe vibrating as blue text starts scrolling across the toe: “Alternatively, if you’re uncomfortable with extrajudicial killings, you could order Bont to capture any enemy spies and hand them off to us for interrogation. It’s riskier than just shooting them — our enemies may have set up a trap that could result in Bont’s death — but we might be able to gain valuable intel or use prisoners as a negotiating tool.”

3. [internal number: 5] While still thinking it over, you’re suddenly interrupted by cooing coming from an open window. A carrier pigeon alights on your shoulder and presents a small note tied to its right leg: “There’s a third way of dealing with this. If you want, you could instruct Bont to simply ignore the enemy agents and focus on his primary mission. This might just be a diversion to waste our time and allow East Lebatuck to finish installing their missiles. Well, let me know of your decision by this evening. PS: This message will self-destruct in ten seconds.”

I did this on three puppets, each choosing a different option; the effect lines were the same as those of the counterpart issue options 1-3.

Found extra options for 1389 and 1390:

Quixote: path: 1375.1->1376.2->1377.1->1381.1->1382.1->1385.1->1388.1; result: 1389, internal option 0 and 1390, internal options 0, 2, 3, and 5.

Train: path: 1375.2->1376.2->1377.2->1381.1->1382.2->1384.1->1386.1->1388.1; result: 1389, internal option 1 and 1390, internal options 1, 2, 3, and 5.

Paffnicard 4: path: 1375.3->1376.2->1377.3->1381.1->1382.2->1384.2->1385.3->1388.2; result: 1389, internal option 2 and 1390, internal options 1, 2, 4, and 6.

Paffnicard 5: path: 1375.2->1376.2->1377.2->1381.1->1382.2->1384.1->1386.3->1388.2; result: 1389, internal option 3 and 1390, internal options 1, 2, 4, and 6.

1389:

All options had the same effect line: "Recent events have left citizens both shaken and stirred."

Paffnia wrote:Rimera steps away from the control panel where he was entering the coordinates for targeted enemy cities and ushers you over to a nearby phone

This variant comes from 1388.1; the options without it come from 1388.2.

Paffnia wrote:“I was able to infiltrate the enemy’s bases by posing as a technician... at least until they caught me. Thankfully, I was able to swipe a guard’s phone.
Paffnia wrote:Fortunately... I had already disarmed each of the warheads before they caught me.”

This variant comes from 1384.1->1386; the options without it come from 1382.1->1385 or 1384.2->1385.

1390:

Internal options 0/1:

Effect line of internal option 1 is the same as the recorded one for 0: "Taxpayers cringe whenever someone brings up the Former Antagonist Reparations Treaty."

Paffnia wrote:As a token of our goodwill, your pilot who was shot down and your agent who managed to infiltrate our military bases will be returned to @@NAME@@ unharmed.

This variant comes from 1385.1. It seems like 1385.3 doesn't lead to this variant (and therefore your pilot does end up dying from ICE-X!).

Internal options 3/4:

Effect line of internal option 4 is the same as the recorded one for 3: "A surprisingly large share of the nation's budget is used to buy new houses for immigrants."

Paffnia wrote:How are my people supposed to ‘put this situation behind us’ when you’ve bombed their houses and crops into oblivion?

This variant comes from 1385.1 or 1386.1 (the invasion of San Vitenzo options).

Paffnia wrote:How are my people supposed to ‘put this situation behind us’ when you’ve poisoned our water and withered our crops?

This variant comes from 1385.3 or 1386.3 (the ICE-X options).

Internal options 5/6:

Effect line of internal option 5 is the same as the recorded one for 6: "Corporations have to consult a fifty-page "sanctions spreadsheet" to determine which countries they are allowed to do business with."

Paffnia wrote:Yes, we would have done the same thing to them if it weren’t for that phone call from our secret agent — and we definitely killed a bunch of their soldiers.

This variant comes from 1388.1; the options without it come from 1388.2.

Thank you for the report. I ended up going by the version you gave in the spoiler thread, though, it was more legible.

I'm expecting a similar variation spread to be on the socialist version, #1404-#1405.

The rest of the options don't matter. Socialists should all get pretty much the same path until they reach #1398. Then choose option 1 on that, anything except option 1 on #1399, and then you're back on rails to #1405.

Maybe the other options do matter for which options you'll get on #1405, but I don't know exactly what to look for there. I guess, look at the texts of the reported options and how the option variants #1390 differ from each other, and draw your own conclusions. Or failing that, pick randomly. Right now we don't even have the proper numbering for the options that have been reported, so we're bound to learn something.

Paffnia wrote:I also have one more capitalist nation with the start of the chain. Any other paths in need of exploring?
I don't think we need anything from capitalists anymore, other than finding #1380, which I still have no clue on.

Maybe see if #1387 has any variant options, like the other issues that give the same effect line (#1383 and #1402), but there's no strong reason to expect that there will be. The narrative is pretty different.

It's not going to just cleanly undo all of your results. It might move things back in the opposite direction from your previous choice, but it's not going to change everything back by exactly the same amount.

Basically, set something on fire and then spray it with freezing water. It'll now be back to a normal-ish temperature, but it's not going to come out of the experience unchanged.
