Forces Marquises aux Armes
Military Overview:
The Forces Marquises aux Armes is one of the largest professional military organizations in the world, with nearly 470 million servicemembers in both active and reserve capacities spread between five service branches and twenty one sub-branches, called Echelons. FMA is much more than a national military; it also funds (by static percentage line item taxes) civilian engineering works, research and development, all law enforcement duties in the Marquesan States, intelligence gathering, management of civilian communications and transportation networks, and many other tasks. All fire, ambulance and first response duties fall within the auspices of FMA inside the Marquesan States, a nation of fifteen billion individuals. The Armed forces are funded by 88 trillion Aureus (180 trillion NSD) per year, accounting for 84% of all actual government expenditures. The five branches, Commande de Guerre Terrestre, (CGT) Commande de Guerre Marine, (CGM) Commande de Mouvement, (CDM) Defense du Royaume, (DDR) and Corps de Réserve d'Inénierie (CRI) make up the Forces Marquises aux Armes, which is detailed below. The FMA is funded by a static percentage tax enshrined in law to ensure the continuity of public services. Of the five branches, three are full-time active duty branches of full-time warfighters and logisticians; two branches are staffed by reservist warfighters who live in the communities they serve and for whom service is a career path. The Marquesan people support the FMA with just under 12.4% of their gross domestic product, with the largest single funding draw being DDR, or Defense du Royaume. The five branches are presented here in overview, active duty branches first:
Commande de Guerre Terrestre is exclusively a warfighting branch with no duties to national defense or infrastructure and no internal airlift, sealift or other logistical capabilities, (as those services are provided by CDM) the four arms of CGT are a full-time professional force with strict entrance and maintenance requirements. CGT employs 120 million personnel funded by a 23.6 trillion Aureus per year line item; there are more than 55 million armored vehicles registered to CGT, along with 7.8 million aircraft, the vast majority of which are attack helicopters. CGT is divided into Hussars, Dragoons, Grenadiers and Huntsmen, the four arms representing separate warfighting capabilities and doctrines. Hussars are the modern evolution of heavy armored cavalry; these forces are composed of tracked armor regiments which typically transport to the combat theater on RO/RO carriers and then move as independent formations. Dragoons are high-speed mechanized cavalry units which carry infantry for dismounted operations. Dragoons are often the first on scene in a geopolitical hotspot, deploying by armed landing ship to beaches near the conflict zone and operating as autonomous units, using a combination of light wheeled and tracked armored vehicles to maneuver on the battlefield at extremely high speeds. Grenadiers are dedicated to transporting and operating missiles and rocket artillery on the battlefield; their separate logistics from Dragoons and Hussars permits those units to move faster without the 10x10 trucks used by GF-CGT; the missile units operate in combat theaters as batteries which use their modern systems to produce accurate, high-speed fires on targets from locations near the active combat zones, using the standoff ranges of the missiles to dictate their positioning. The Chausseurs Spéciale, or Huntsmen, are elite light infantry which operate with complete autonomy in the battlespace and often cooperate with FN-DDR personnel to coordinate intelligence. CS-DDR accounts for 20% of the CGT force but a very small percentage of the military as a whole, and its status as an elite fighting force has hundreds of years of history. For hundreds of years, the Chausseurs were known as The Shogun's Own Elite Light Infantry, or TSELI, a highly-respected multinational fighting force which combines the art of statecraft with special forces training. This mission is carried on today, as all Marquesan diplomats are recruited from the active ranks of CS-CGT.
Commande de Guerre Marine is the dedicated Naval Warfare arm of the FMA, with more than 85 million servicemembers funded by a nearly 17 trillion Aureus per year tax. CGM registers more than 260,000 warships, 700,000+ manned aircraft and more than 115,000 drones. The largest share of its funding goes to Naval Aviation and maintenance of its fleet of Huracan class aircraft carriers; GA-CGM squadrons are complete battle fleets with escort ships and more than 100 aircraft in each. GA-CGM has no duty to home waters defense, so it is exclusively a power projection force, as are the squadrons of Guerre Navale. GN-CGM is exclusively a long distance surface strike force, meant to conduct ship-to-ship, surface-to-air and ship-to-surface warfare primarily through the use of very long range missiles carried aboard Galeru class cruisers and Naga class Heavy Strike Cruisers in a more or less exclusively deep ocean patrol role. Fusiliers Marins is the Littoral Warfare arm of CGM; a force oriented toward the use of helicopters and VTOL transports to conduct over-the-horizion amphibious/air assault operations. FM makes extensive use of gunboats for riverine and coastal operations; its Shora class destroyers and Akurra-B SAM carrier Corvettes provide high volume air defense for clusters of small vessels which operate in waterways too shallow for heavier ships and make use of their Windigo-class carriers as bases of operations to dominate shallow water battlespaces. Corps Guerre Sous-Marine operates entirely as an autonomous fighting force, with an all-nuclear powered fleet of fast attack and strategic missile submarines, which operate in 26-ship packs called an "Eel's Bed" typically from purpose-built submarine pens constructed in remote areas away from population centers.
Commande de Mouvement is a professional uniformed service of nearly 30 million personnel, funded by nearly 6 trillion Aureus per year. CDM has responsibility for more than 95,000 ships, 2 million aircraft and more than 23 million wheeled and tracked tactical vehicles. CDM has four arms; Corps Logistique au Sol, (LS-CDM) Corps Logistique Aéroportée, (LA-CDM) Corps Logistique Navale (LN-CDM) and Médecin de Combat. (MC-CDM) LS-CDM is divided up into Heavy Motor Companies, each of which is oriented toward a specific task. These companies deploy together as Battalions, deploying by RO/RO sealift to the combat theater and driving into the battle area as autonomous units which respond to demand by operating in areas where forces are concentrated, using response time as a metric to ensure that the logistics train never falls behind the forward elements, but allowing forward elements to operate unburdened of the supply of arms, ammunition, reinforcements and the supplies required for combat operations. Logistique Aéroportée provides airlift to the FMA abroad, transporting equipment, personnel, vehicles and all that is necessary to a modern military by use of transport aircraft developed bespoke to LA-CGM specifications. Logistique Navale is the backbone of Marquesan ability to project combat power; LN operates a fleet of more than 83,000 Qarin and Prosperine class cargo ships; these are reserved exclusively for military use, and permit FMA to move huge concentrations of troops and equipment without long delays. LN-CGM operates in every corner of the world, following the Armed Forces wherever their mission takes them, and the ships operate in all conditions, often serving as icebreakers when no civilian icebreaker is available. The Qarin class beachable ships operated by this arm are also shared by MC-CDM, or Médecin de Combat. MC-CDM is a unique branch of the military as it is entirely devoted to unarmed search and rescue missions. All vessels, aircraft and vehicles owned by MC-CDM are painted in bright (anti-flash) white, with clear MC-CDM markings on all sides. MC personnel are armed only for self defense; they operate primarily from Prosperine, Windigo and Qarin class vessels, which are converted entirely into floating hospitals. In the event of a natural disaster, MC-CDM Qarin class Amphibious Assault Ships beach themselves nearest the devastation, and bow doors allow people to be transported directly to the hospital without a helicopter flight over water. Prosperine class cargo ships in MC-CDM service are converted into large scale hospitals with 2,000 beds and full scale surgery and prosthesis manufacture facilities, with smaller trauma hospital facilities on Windigo class carriers, which operate Vulcan and Strider VTOL transports to transport large numbers of wounded simultaneously. Mobile field hospitals on 8x8 tactical vehicle platforms and ambulances using 4x4 Habu Scout Mobility Vehicles are used to transport and treat patients; MC personnel follow the combat operations wherever they are and conduct Search-And-Rescue (SAR) operations wherever disaster strikes as a military funded but non-combat arm of the FMA which has in many cases obtained extranational rights to traverse foreign airspace, territories and waters if performing in an emergency response capacity.
Defense du Royaume accounts for just over 43% of all national defense expenditure, with 192 million personnel who are employed by the FMA as "Citizen Soldiers" serving a contract by term of years living in the communities they serve. DDR owns fifteen million aircraft, 33 million armored vehicles and more than 300,000 vessels registered, all of which is funded by 37 trillion Aureus per year. The Gendarmes Urbaine account for nearly 80 million personnel in 990 cities across the Marquesan States; other roles of DDR include long distance and high speed observation and maritime patrol performed by APF-DDR, which is built around a nuclear-armed deterrent force of land based bombers which perform regular airspace patrols, especially in hotly contested channels. Gendarmes Navale, (GN-DDR and Gendarmes Aéroportée (GA-DDR) provide dedicated maritime patrol and comprehensive ground-based air defense, distributed in small movable installations throughout the Marquesan States, centered around cities and high-value infrastructure. Le Fleur Noir, the national intelligence, research and development agency operates within the auspices of DDR, providing a common funding pool for covert and clandestine operations, intelligence gathering, and military research and development. Much of the operations of Le Fleur Noir are classified, but some details will be provided below on the national intelligence arm.
Corps de Réserve d'Ingénierie employs more than 38 million personnel as Citizen Soldiers, serving a part time contract for a term of years and living in the communities they are serving and funded by 3.75 trillion Aureus per year. CRI is unique because 75% of its mission by funding and personnel is non-military in nature, with only one arm of CRI registering tactical vehicles. The Ingénierie Militaire operate 1,190 Lances which deploy with combat units to provide mine-clearing, bridge laying and engineering support. IM-CRI is oriented for high mobility in combat environments where units will without doubt be exposed to hostile fires. IC-CRI, CP-CRI and TP-CRI are nearly 29 million civilian personnel in total who coordinate to administer the national communications and power grids, water purification, waste disposal and other infrastructure concerns, large-scale public works such as highways, railways, bridges and dams. These arms of CRI are organized as military units and funded by military appropriations, however they are unarmed echelons which rely on the Engineer Corps for organization, funding, staffing and structure, but which concern themselves exclusively with civilian concerns inside the Marquesan States, and devote no resources to strategic matters.
Conscription:
The Marquesan government, throughout antiquity and continuing into the present day has held a policy of levée en masse, or national consciption, however compulsory service to the Forces Marquises aux Armes is different than any other nation. Historically, the îles Marquises and then later the Marquesan Shogunate have enjoyed the cultural significance of the nation's "Warrior Class" and polically, service is the most direct path to citizenship for those qualified. The FMA has a professional entrance standard which would be considered highly restrictive in many countries, however in cultural perspective, many residents of The Marquesan States meet the five basic service requirements, these are:

(One) A selectee must be male or female, not younger than twenty four (24) years of age and not older than fifty (50) years of age.
(Two) A selectee must have completed a baccalaureate (Bachelors) level degree or above in a postsecondary institution of higher learning.
(Three) A selectee must have a son or daughter born and a family capable of supporting the child in the servicemember's absence.
(Four) A selectee must have received a satisfactory score on the Batterie de Sélection des Forces Armées (BSFA) Exam.
(Five) A selectee must display a high level of physical fitness, healthy habits and an absence of major diseases or deformities.

Testing and selection occurs as a graduation requirement for any post-secondary degree obtained in The Marquesan States. In practice approximately the top 3% of the population as-scored is selected. If selected, service is mandatory for the initial period of five years, but anyone who chooses to re-enlist at the end of their five year term may do so with significant advantages such as signing bonuses, increase in rank and choice of duty post. An enlistment served in the FMA awards academic credit to the Servicemember, who is awarded a graduate degree in their specialty after completion of their first enlistment, which is paid for entirely by the FMA. Servicemembers must continue to attend classes during the course of their enlistments and must perform academically to maintain their qualification status. Selectees are profiled to different branches of the FMA based on their result scores from the BSFA and their physical profile. In the case of a Conscientious Objector, these individuals may choose to serve in one of the non-combat branches such as the Medical Corps, or Engineering. The highest-scoring BSFA-takers and physical profiles are directed to the elite branches such as Chausseurs Speciale and Le Fleur Noir, with the scores closest to the minimum being directed to the unarmed branches, in Civil Engineering, Public Works or Communications. A dominant theme throughout Marquesan history has been the warrior class, which historically has led the Marquesan people through wars, disasters and migrations. The country has always effectively been governed by its military; national service through the Forces Marquises aux Armes is seen to be the most honorable path to citizenship, which cannot be conferred through familial ties. Because the Marquesan people have always supported their warrior class, the social pressure to qualify for service and citizenship is great and qualification is far more widespread than the top 3% of the population the FMA selects for service. The Forces Marquises aux Armes choose the branch a selectee will serve in, but ultimately each selectee is allowed to choose their specialty from among those they qualify for.
Training:
Each branch of the Forces Marquises aux Armes maintains its own military academy, referred to locally as a GEM, or Grande École Militaire. All five Écoles are located in historical fortresses, several of which have been standing for at least 400 years. When selected for a service branch, selectees must attend their GEM for six months of general military education and additional training of up to another year and a half of specialty training depending on the individual's specialty. The GEM for each branch is typically associated with the branch headquarters, each detailed below with the branch's article. Every branch receives a completely different training course in terms of the course material, but all selectees are treated with professionalism. Marquesan military training is often seen to be less violent and aggressive than other national training programmes; preferring initiative to obedience. The 6-month training time set aside for "Basic Training" allows for a lower training intensity and more time to psychologically harden individuals to the necessities and rigors of combat. Rather than "breaking" the personalities of new selectees through intimidation and aggression, Marquesan basic training generally tries to "mold" a recruit's personality in the hope of producing soldiers with stronger personalities and more personal initiative. Failure to adapt to the rigors of a school typically requires a transfer to another echelon, as does being injured in training. Rather than moving for dismissal, the FMA seeks to ensure that the individual does not fail utterly in his or her duty and makes best use of those unable to adhere to the training regimen for physical or mental reasons. Because the entrance standards are so high and a postsecondary degree required for selection, losses of these types are extremely minimal.
Ranks & Pay Grades:
Aspirant (sometimes nick-named "Caillou" or stone) is the first rank a selectee holds during the course of their initial training. Those who distinguish themselves in the course of their initial training sequence are awarded the rank of Élève Sous-Officier. If promoted during intial training, those so-awarded are given the rank of Eleve Officier when they begin the second phase of training, while those still ranked as Aspirant at Basic Training Graduation are promoted upon completion of first phase. Caporal is the first active military rank a servicemember can be promoted to, typically occuring in the first 2 years of service at the rank of Eleve Officier, and when he or she has completed their first full term of conscription at the grade of Caporal or deployed with that rank, he may become a Caporal-Chef. The rank of Caporal-Chef de Première Classe is awarded to those who re-enlist for a second term of service. Those who distinguish themselves during their second enlistment or deploy in that rank are awarded the rank of Sergent. A rank of Sergent-Chef can be awarded to those who distinguish themselves with valor during combat operations during their second combat deployment and those who re-enlist for a third term of service can be awarded the rank of Sergent-Chef-Major, typically serving as the commander of a CGT Brigade, a CGM Squadron, or a DDR Brigade. Lance Commanders have responsibility for roughly 8,000 souls; these personnel are given the rank of Commandant Lieutenant. A Division commander is a Vice-Commandant, and an Armada or Army commander holds the rank of Commandant-Général. The highest ranking personnel in the Forces Marquises aux Armes are Branch and Echelon Commanders, who sit in council to decide matters of policy for the FMA, holding the rank of Commandant-Supérieur. The FMA pays its servicemembers incrementally depending on their rank. This pay structure is based on the average living wage of a Marquesan Citizen or Resident in the civilian sector and is modeled to ensure that FMA servicemembers may live comfortably and reasonably. While serving in the FMA, health insurance, secondary education and housing are provided to the servicemember and his or her family. During times of war, a servicemember's pay increases by 5% and active Hazardous Duty increases a servicemember's pay by an additional 5%. In addition, members of Le Fleur Noir, L'Arrière-Pays et les Frontières or Chausseurs Speciale receive an additional 10% increase in pay during their service and 5% during their service thereafter if they continue to serve in other echelons of the FMA after leaving CS, APF or FN. CS operatives on Sentinel duty receive 10% additional pay during their service as a Sentinel and an additional 5% thereafter. In addition to the servicemember's pay and regardless of where a servicemember may be stationed, housing areas are updated every five years and remodeled every ten in phases, ensuring that housing never becomes run down or below a certain standard of living. With each rank set, (ESO/EO, Caporal, Sergent, Commandant) an upgrade in housing is given, with the standard Operator housing being a standard apartment arrangement sized depending on the servicemember's family shape. A Caporal receives a condominium or townhome-style housing while a Sergent receives a modest single family home. A Commandant Lieutenant or Vice-Commandant is given a small plot of land and a fine home in which to live while Commandants-Général and Supérieur receive a large land plot with a fine villa in a location of the Commandant's choosing.

Densely jungled Amirantes is home to the CGT School at Taga; surrounding the Aleki Kyoko Mémorial GEM is a massive complex divided into four self-contained campuses: The Hachiman Kabuto Armor School, headquarters of the Hussars, the Shishini Botan Maneuver School, headquarters of the Dragoons, the Maruni Hei Applied Ballistics School for Grenadiers and the Oni Kabuto Asymmetric Warfare School for the Chausseurs Spéciale. Each École de Guerre quarters students for generally one calendar year. During training, the details of maneuver combat are emphasized; a large percentage of the curriculum focuses on drivers training and gunnery ranges, with a focus on the technical aspects of modern vehicle-mounted weapons and urban dismounted infantry tactics. The Chausseurs' School at Taga is a highly-regarded linguistics academy, known for producing the finest fluent speakers and writers of foreign languages in addition to being an award-winning political science school. The Grenadiers School focuses on rocket ballistics and tracking systems, while the Dragoon's School and Hussar's School contain extensive instruction blocks on land navigation and formation movement. All servicemembers of Commande de Guerre Terrestre wear GREEN uniforms with GREEN epaulets and BLACK rank insignia. Each echelon is identified by lapel, shoulder and headgear insignia bearing the echelon crest the uniform and its wearer are assigned to. The Hussars are a modern fighting force with ancient roots in heavy armored cavalry, used in decisive maneuvers which swept through battlefields in waves. As cavalry evolved and adopted the firearm into its tactics manuals, the Marquesan Army became an early researcher in armored vehicles. Today, the modern Main Battle Tank is at the center of Hussar formations, with a few wheeled vehicles to facilitate regimental command centers. A regiment of Hussars trains relentlessly on high-speed maneuver combat when not actively warfighting; the hilly, river-cut terrain around the Taga school facilitates this type of extremely realistic training including live-fire force on force engagements against remote operated and foreign-built tanks and other armored vehicles. Hussar regiments are typically deployed when the threat level is too high for dismounted infantry and the presence of heavy tanks on the battlefield is a high possibility. Each Hussar regiment has at its core eight Chimera Main Battle Tanks, which are built around their high-velocity 112mm smoothbore cannon and its Titanium/Uranium alloy dart ammunition. These tanks are extremely fast and designed to defeat all but the heaviest main battle tanks at long standoff ranges precluding practical counterfires with extremely high velocity ammunition. Accompanying the tanks are four Amarok-A self-propelled howitzers. The Amarok-A's are highly mobile and oriented toward setting up quick fire bases to support the regiment as it moves, and be able to reposition the fire base much more swiftly than is possible with towed artillery. Three 45.2mm Rotary 5-barrel Assault Guns accompany the artillery and the command vehicles to provide meaningful air defense for the regiment against fast moving missiles and aircraft, large formations of light armored vehicles or other high-volume threats. In addition to this, a "Steel Pagoda" battery of four Orcus-B MADS which follow the regiment through the battlespace and a Bellatrix radar carrier 10x10 truck, which typically accompanies the regiment's 8x8 mobile Command Center. A Hussar Regiment moves with a great deal of autonomy through the battlefield, in part because of the four Hellcat Hunter/Killer gunship helicopters that fly with every regiment. Hellcats facilitate scouting for enemy formations, but more than that, each helicopter is armed to the teeth with dozens of missiles and hundreds of rounds for its 28.7mm chin cannon. Hellcat helicopters are large enough to act as personnel transports in an emergency, but are most often used to cover the regiment with dedicated Close Air Support.

Dragoons throughout history have been light cavalry formations which operate with an emphasis on speed, firepower and shock value. In the modern era and especially with respect to the highly evolved land, sea and air defenses of modern countries, a dismounted infantry force faces combat environments intended to quickly destroy an unprotected force in the open. The modern adaptation of the Dragoon as a replacement for dismounted infantry evolved as a response to the problem of increased lethality and accuracy of battlefield weapons, and the prevalence of CBRN contaminants, especially in Gholgoth. Dragoons are organized into regiments which can individually deploy on a Qarin-class amphibious assault ship, while the greater Lance sets up a base of operations from containers shipped on a single Prosperine class cargo ship. The smaller, faster Qarin class assault ships allow a lance of Dragoons tremendous mobility; the ships themselves are armed with rocket artillery and a heavy 144mm mortar, with artillery spotting drones carried aboard to assist in amphibious landings. These drones would be used to reveal the locations of hostile actors in the area of the beachhead, which would be fired upon with heavy rocket artillery upon arrival in the Landing Zone. Because of the speed and stealth of the Qarin class, a Dragoons lance can arrive in a combat area with little warning and make opposed landings with a very high degree of autonomy. The regiment uses its Hellcat helicopters to pound targets, along with the long-range 144mm mortar aboard the Qarin class landing ships. Upon arrival in the beach area, the Qarin class ships will run aground at full speed, using reversing buckets to back out of the beach once vehicles have disembarked. The high speed of the light-tracked and wheeled vehicles used by the Dragoon lance allow them to exit the beach area with extreme speed, prosecuting any targets of opportunity with the stabilized and tracked vehicle-mounted weapons rather than with small arms. Using protected vehicles for this purpose dramatically decreases combat losses in the beach area, and allows the Dragoons to penetrate freshly-bombarded defenses at great speed, pushing past the landing area in as little time as is possible. These units practice high speed off-road driving relentlessly at the Shishini Botan school in Taga, Amirantes. The mixture of river-cut hillcountry and dense, rainy jungle afford training units an ideal environment for drilling ambush tactics and high speed moving gunnery, at which Marquesan Dragoons are considered among the finest in the world. Dragoon regiments center around their core of twenty Cavalry Fighting Vehicles, and 200 infantry soldiers. These are escorted by 4x4 "Boomslang" armored reconnaissance vehicles. Both the CFV's and 4x4 escorts carry the high velocity FA29.L74.R6 cannon, which fires six round bursts of high velocity 28.7mm ammunition to very long ranges. These guns are powerful enough to defeat many light armored vehicles, most helicopters and nearly all low flying aircraft. When a hardened target or a heavier armored vehicle is discovered, Ajax-A Amphibious Tank Destroyers are employed, with the 144mm mortars of the Ajax-B's acting as local indirect artillery support to the regiment. A "Steel Pagoda" battery of Orcus-B MADS and a Bellatrix Radar carrier variant Typhos 10x10 truck support the lance with High Volume Air Defense (HIVAD) and missile support against tracked armor and pop-up targets. The Bellatrix radar carrier typically accompanies the Regimental Command Post, with 8x8 munitions haulers and mobile command center.

The 2,200 Lances of Marquesan Grenadiers are a corps steeped in tradition; since the invention of gunpowder, the Marquesan people were quick to realize its potential as a propellant and experiments with missiles have always been important to military doctrine since those times. The Maruni Hei school at Taga is an academy focusing on the disciplines of physics and fluid dynamics; the Grenadiers are taught to understand the missiles they operate; training goes into specific depth on targeting systems and modern threats. The regiments of GF-DDR are networked teams of 10x10 Transporter/Erector/Launchers and tracked Rocket Artillery Carriers which make up a system called "Iron Palace". The Iron Palace system carries a full array of Ahriman surface to air missiles, Morningstar subsonic cruise missiles, Summanus hypersonic boost glide missiles and Makara theater ballistic missiles, plus tracked carriers for Varuna artillery rockets. Grenadier regiments can deploy either by amphibious landing ship or by airlift; a single Iron Palace battery has tremendous long-distance striking power and provide powerful long-distance strike capability from ground-based vehicle teams which are highly mobile, highly autonomous and train for rapid deployment and minimum time to launch. The highly mobile Amarok-B tracked rocket carriers are designed to operate near the front and provide long distance, high speed strikes in support of Chausseurs, Dragoons or Hussars on the battlefield. Integrated into this unit is the "Iron Pagoda" used widely with other units, an echelon of four Orcus-B MADS and a Bellatrix radar carrier. In this configuration however, the Bellatrix radar also commands other missiles which have surface to air and long distance surface to surface capabilities, and nuclear options if wartime conditions merit that warhead profile. The Ahriman SAM has a 36,000+ meter ceiling and flies near Mach 5; it is one of the heaviest and fastest surface to air missiles in service anywhere and is capable of hitting nearly any aircraft that flies, with a broad and deep no escape zone. The Morningstar missile is a high-subsonic stealthy cruise missile with a 1,400+ kilometer standoff range. Capable of carrying either conventional or nuclear warheads, the Morningstar carries a massive tandem-charge warhead which blasts through four meters of steel, concrete, rock, or earth before detonating a powerful high explosive warhead. The TAPHEI warhead in the Morningstar missile is also carried by the much faster but shorter-ranged Summanus missile, which reaches its burnout velocity of Mach 10 at 900+ kilometers. At a stratospheric 120 kilometers altitude, the Summanus missile flies much too high and fast to be intercepted by even the most advanced conventional missile defenses; once fired the missile can perform high-g evasive maneuvers and uses a dependable all-weather Lidar seeker to guide itself onto the target. A Summanus strike carries enough energy to crush command bunkers buried 30 meters below ground; for deeper or more hardened targets, there is the Makara missile. Makara TBM's fly at nearly 44,000 meters and a burnout velocity just under Mach 8; this makes the missile nearly impossible to intercept, as it flies too low to be targeted by Anti-Ballistic Missile systems and too high for Surface-to-Air systems. The heavy warhead bus thrown by the Makara missile can carry either conventional or nuclear payloads; the conventional warhead is a powerful Earth Penetrating Warhead which has proven able to crush command bunkers at depths of 100 meters. A conventionally-armed Makara strike is the most powerful non-nuclear strike available in the Marquesan arsenal; these missiles are carried, as all the others are, on road-mobile 10x10 TEL's which disguise which missile system they carry behind corrugated steel box panels of uniform size to all the others. The panels fold down automatically for missile launch, shielding the vehicle's tires and undercarriage from missile blast by manipulating the panels with robotic armatures to create a blast-resistant launch platform in under 2 minutes. Grenadier formations tend not to travel too closely to Cavalry or Armor elements, rather preferring to move the TEL's from location to location along patrol routes which intersect with Orcus-B MADS and Amarok-B Rocket Artillery Carrier stations, at strategic checkpoints. In this way, the most important missiles are never stationary long enough to be targeted and are constantly under the protection of high-volume air defenses.

The Chausseurs Spéciale are a special echelon of the Forces Marquises aux Armes in that details of its operations and unit locations are sparse and that its operators move outside the command structure. The Oni Kabuto Asymmetric Warfare school at Taga is widely renowned as one of the finest academies for linguistics and martial arts anywhere in the world; instructors specialize in the bone-breaking art of Kapu Kuʻialua and enforce strict discipline during training. Oni Kabuto serves as a War College for the Forces Marquises aux Armes; it is a "think tank" for analysis of foreign-built military equipment, and a center for open discussion. Oni Kabuto has a strict "No quotes, no attributions" policy which facilitates productive discussions on the contentious issues of the day. Frequently the center of debates and discussions on foreign policy, the Chausseurs school at Taga is frequently the de-facto conference space for foreign dignitaries visiting the Marquesan States. Chausseurs are specialists in diplomacy and foreign languages; Counterintelligence field activity, espionage, human intelligence, subversion and stabilization operations such as bodyguard or military aid missions are most often given to Chausseurs, whose lightweight vehicles and small regiment structure permit rapid deployments with simplified logistics. Operating with covert and often totally clandestine methods, the Chausseurs rarely operate in military uniforms outside garrison conditions, preferring civilian attire so that they more easily blend in with non-military populations. CS-CGT personnel are experts, always recruited from existing military formations and never from the general public; an operator may be selected during training, however Chausseurs assignment is by selection only. These units are often called upon to act as Embassy Guards and to act in diplomatic roles in the combat theater, working with local populations in PSYOP and in Civil-Military Operations such as school and hospital construction, roadbuilding, etc. Chausseurs are frequently the "face" of the Forces Marquises aux Armes, often seen at the side of diplomats and dignitaries, in consulates and embassies the world over and at work around the world wherever the Marquesan government has a diplomatic interest. Chausseurs duty qualifies all personnel for an additional pay modifier, as the line of such duty is often hazardous to life and limb.

Coastal Arue Prefecture is home to the Commande de Guerre Marine Headquarters and School, located near the Prefecture Capital at Mangareva. Arue is rainy, temperate and fertile, Mangareva sits at the edge of a vast grassland, with sun-kissed beaches flecked with gold washed down from the mountains further north. The waters here are temperate and never ice-choked, the deep natural harbor at Mangareva has been of strategic importance since antiquity; the Kimo Yaguruma School was founded more than 360 years before the present day. The GEM contains four campuses; the Takarabune ni Nami Oceanic Warfare Academy, the Ehara Kashiwa Littoral Warfare Academy, the Hijihari Kikusui Naval Aviation Academy and the Okagami Submarine Warfare Academy. Each École de Guerre quarters students for generally one calendar year. Kimo Yaguruma is a massive, sprawling facility with dozens of individual schools, barracks, dining and recreation facilities, massive gunnery ranges and impact zones on land and sea. The GEM itself has a 600 square kilometer exclusive no-use zone on the water near Mangareva for training of crews on ships under sail. The Nuclear Propulsion School on school grounds includes five academic research reactors, while the Dissimilar Weapons Research Facility conducts scholarly reviews of foreign-built systems and tests them against pilots from the Strike Fighter Weapons College housed at the Hijihari Kikusui École de Guerre. When activated for deployment, ships rotate on 6-month assignments. Each ship has two crews, which rotate from land duty to sea duty. When the ship comes back from deployment, its deployed crew is relieved from duty for leave time, and the land duty crew begins deployment procedures, including all necessary repairs, rearmaments and system checks on the vessel itself before deploying for a 6-month rotation. This minimizes the time any warship spends in port and maximizes crew morale as scheduled leave is a regular part of duty and all crewmembers spend roughly equal time deployed. All servicemembers of Commande de Guerre Marine wear BLUE uniforms with BLUE epaulets and RED rank insignia. Each corps is identified by lapel, shoulder and headgear insignia bearing the Corps crest the uniform and its wearer are assigned to. The Huracan class carriers in service with Guerre Aéronavale are the heaviest and longest surface warships in service with the Marquesan Forces aux Armes; the catamaran aircraft carriers are truly massive, with more room for aircraft than they carry and the ability to conduct multiple takeoffs and multiple landings, simultaneously. These ships are nuclear-powered, with theoretically unlimited range and together, a Lance carries 170 aircraft, predominantly Headhunter class Variable-Geometry Strike Fighter/Interceptors, Blackheart class Supersonic Strike Penetrators and Divine Wind class Air Dominance Fighters. Headhunter and Blackheart are designed for each other, a high speed, high-altitude stealthy tactical bomber and a fighter fast enough to escort it on penetration runs. Headhunter carries the Morningstar subsonic cruise missile and the Mach 4+ Corseque Active Radar Homing missile, both of which allow the missile to be fired without locking on from the launching aircraft, from far outside visual range of the target. Blackheart is one of the heaviest catapult-launchable aircraft at 47 tons full load; it is a high-mach bomber designed to release long range standoff munitions from high altitude and supersonic speed, then continue on their mission without ever entering the enemy air defense zone. Its primary weapons, the hypersonic Summanus configured here as an Air Launched Ballistic Missile and the Witiko Supersonic Standoff Missile have 900+ and 700+ kilometer ranges respectively, with Witiko diving down to a sea-skimming or terrain following profile for the final stage of its attack, where Summanus strikes top-down. Witiko carries a larger warhead than Summanus, though both can be nuclear armed. If chosen to carry a nuclear weapon, Witiko is designed to airburst over the target at an altitude optimized to create a devastating high-pressure shockwave to a 30+ kilometer radius. These aircraft and their weapons represent a high speed conventional or nuclear first-strike option, which can be delivered from roaming GA-CGM squadrons at a moment's notice. The carriers themselves are heavily protected, but escorting them is also a Galeru class Guided Missile Cruiser, which carries Hydra exoatmospheric interceptor missiles, 180 Summanus missiles and 32 Ahriman Surface to Air Missiles. These missiles both protect the squadron from ballistic missiles and 5+ Generation aircraft but allow engagement of surface combatants or other targets at long ranges without needing to launch an aircraft. Escorting the larger ships are Damballa class ASW Hunter/Killer Frigates and Shora class Tactical Gunnery Destroyers, which together provide High Volume Air Defense (HIVAD) and potent defense from submarines. The smaller ships are turbine powered and require a visit to a fleet replenishment oiler every few days, however both Galeru and Huracan are nuclear-driven, giving them range limited only by the Guerre Marine deployment schedule. These ships cruise at high convoy speeds and doctrinally tend to stay out of shallow water due to the deep draught of the Galeru and Huracan class ships and because their usefulness is in providing roving coverage of huge swaths of open water in Gholgoth and Varathron where the threat level is very high. A GA-CGM detachment can provide long distance, high-speed strike options at thousands of kilometers distance, delivery of precision guided munitions by aircraft permit targets to be prosecuted in hours even at intercontinental range without requiring the use of a Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile, which is widely observable and for which many defensive platforms exist. The potent deterrent and deep power projection afforded by Guerre Aéronavale are often the first tool reached for in moments of great urgency.

Each Guerre Navale squadron is a package of 15 ships designed to deliver a 1,000+ kilometer range nuclear and non-nuclear strategic strike option into a combat theater, protected by escort ships and moving at 30 knot convoy speeds, the 2,620 Squadrons of Guerre Navale are comprised of dedicated surface combatants. Each Squadron centers around its quartet of Naga class Heavy Strike Cruisers, and their "Makara" Theater Ballistic Missiles, carrying either nuclear or conventional Earth Penetrating Warheads. Each Naga carries a 1-Megawatt X-band missile tracking radar with intercontinental range; this allows an individual squadron to be spaced out over a very large area in smaller packs of three or four ships, increasing the difficulty of successful detection while still keeping every ship within range of the defensive and offensive weapons of the others. While the Naga class Heavy Strike Cruisers are nuclear powered and have indefinite range, the Galeru, Shora, and Damballa class vessels are all turbine powered and require regular stops at a Prosperine class fleet oiler roughly every week. Subsonic, 1,500 kilometer-class "Morningstar" missiles are carried by the Naga class, which is a lethal, stealthy nuclear-capable missile designed for terrain following and sea skimming mission profiles over long distances in high threat environments, these missiles can be fired into a target area without prior intelligence, classifying targets as it passes or overflies them. Galeru class Guided Missile Cruisers carry a variety of missile armaments, but primarily the Summanus hypersonic boost-glide missile. Summanus flies at Mach 10 to a range reportedly in excess of 1,000 kilometers, the highly agile quasi-ballistic missiles fly at altitudes precluding interception with SAM's or ABM's, striking at high speed with enough accuracy to attack maneuvering warships and enough power to crush deeply-buried bunkers. In addition, the "Hydra" Exoatmospheric Interceptor System and "Ahriman" Surface-to-Air Missiles comprehensively protect the Squadron from hypersonic missiles, ballistic missiles, orbital weapons and 5+ Generation fighter and bomber aircraft. Smaller missiles like the "Misericorde" carried by Damballa class Frigates can engage small, hard to hit targets like the sail of a submarine above the water, or a pop-up target like an attack helicopter or fast attack craft at beyond visual range, launching before locking on and identifying targets as it flies. Damballa class Frigates are dedicated submarine hunters, protecting the surface fleet with rocket launched homing torpedoes and deep-diving wire guided torpedoes, and "Seadevil" armed sonobuoys. The Damballa class frigates are some of the fastest surface combatants afloat in Gholgoth, with weapons designed to prosecute the quietest and deepest-diving modern submarines. Protecting the Squadrons from high volume air threats like swarms of missiles and drones, and also protecting missile-armed Arsenal ships like Galeru and Naga from lightly armored surface combatants as large as 30,000 tons are Shora class Tactical Gunnery Destroyers. The Shora class is armed only with guns, carrying six modern emplacements on a stealthy, low-RCS modern warship of 6,800 tons. Two 45.2mm 5-barrel revolving cannons, one on either end of the ship have sweeping, comprehensive fields of fire; thier long engagement distance and selectable 100 or 200-round bursts create huge clouds of hypervelocity shrapnel, but also have adequate power to tear through traditional naval construction and can decimate huge numbers of Fast Attack Craft. In addition, four Dual-Gun positions for 138mm artillery cannons derived from the development of the AGA.47 Amarok-A Assault Gun, Amphibious provide burst volleys of three rounds per gun before reloading their ready ammunition cylinders. With eight guns in total, the Shora produces lethal 6-second volleys of 24 rounds; this is often used for preparing a beach for landing, it can be used to destroy a ship as it floats, but it is intended for use on large volumes of aircraft like drones or helicopters, where a single volley produces an impenetrable wall of hypervelocity shrapnel. The versatile, dependable Shora class escorts cruise with the fleet on one turbine but can activate its second turbine to achieve a fast flanking speed that allows a Shora to move quickly into gun range and engage in defense of the Squadron. Guerre Navale Squadrons tend to remain in deep water, loitering in an operational theater to give options to commanders on the ground and to increase the accuracy of missiles fired in the theater due to the presence of the Naga's X-band radar, with 5,000 kilometer range and resolution adequate to detect a 4cm metal sphere at that distance traveling through the atmosphere, the Naga provides both warning of hostile missiles but also allows commanders to see their missiles in flight far beyond the range of mobile ground-based radars.

The 2,620 Lances of the Corps Fusiliers Marins represent one of the finest small-ship surface combatant organizations to be found anywhere in the world. Each squadron is built around its pair of Windigo class Attack Transports, Helicopter and their Flights (VEF's) of Hellcat and Corax helicopters and Strider VTOL gunships. With 8 VEF's in a squadron, each possesses 56 heavily armed helicopters and long range armed VTOL transports, which allow the squadron to patrol huge swaths of sea and land in a variety of capacities from Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) to Close Air Support (CAS) and Search-And-Rescue (SAR) missions. The Windigo class carriers together house 1,300 marine soldiers per Squadron who fly with the helicopters and train relentlessly on boarding by air assault and airmobile infantry tactics. Augmenting this capability is a fleet of 24 Garuda class gunboats. Each carries a front-mounted 70.9mm high velocity cannon which fires 5 shot bursts, and a rear-mounted 144mm autoloading gun-mortar which fires 3 shot bursts, plus 8 Misericorde optically-guided, tandem-warhead missiles. These deadly, armored and heavily armed gunboats are shockingly fast and draft less than 2 meters, allowing them to sail into many shallow rivers not navigable by larger vessels. In addition, Akurra class corvettes travel near the gunboats providing indirect fire support with long range Varuna ballistic artillery rockets carrying thermobaric airburst warheads, and protecting the Squadron with SAM.155 Ahriman Surface-to-Air Missiles. SAM.155's fly at nearly Mach 4.8 and carry a heavy annular blast/fragmentation warhead in a highly agile missile body with a sophisticated, modern multi-mode seeker and inertial navigation. SAM.155 has a ceiling of greater than 36,000 meters and can prosecute the latest in 5+ Generation stealth aircraft. Acting as more than just escorts but as shallow-draught "Pocket Battleships" are 4 heavily armed and armored Shora class Tactical Gunnery Destroyers. The Shora's 138mm guns have over the horizon range and can defend the fleet from huge volumes of helicopters, drones or missiles with its mix of 45.2mm 5-barrel rotary guns and dual-cannon mounts for the FA138 guns. In good weather, the Garuda class gunboats can cross open water with the fleet, however in cases of foul weather or very long deployment distances, the gunboats will be carried inside Qarin class Amphibious Assault Ships and rolled out into the water once in the Combat Theater. Fusiliers Marins are highly trained at warfare in coastal shallows and riverine environments; underwater "frogmen" style assaults are widely practiced, as are Helicast type insertions. The shock tactics used by FM-CGT focus on overwhelming the target area with fast, heavily-armed gunships and soldiers with heavy weapons supported by nearby shipboard systems. The first-class hospital facilities aboard a Windigo class carrier reduce casualties due to the short transit times even from maximum combat range and facilities designed to take high volumes of combat casualties, including spacious surgical facilities.

Guerre Sous-Marine is an elite fighting force; known as le lit de l'anguille, or "The Eel's Bed", each squadron constructs a heavily reinforced submarine pen with the help of military engineers in a remote location of the Squadron commander's choosing before stationing the submarines. These squadrons are widely dispersed, many deep up-river in navigable channels, hidden buried within hills or covered by heavy foresting with few roads and small, inconspicuous facilities, the Eel's Bed is generally well-disguised and submarines have a policy of only moving in and out of pen under the cover of night. A squadron of 26 submarines makes up the Eel's Bed, a mix of 15 Strix class Fast Attack submarines, Ravana-A submarines carrying the Immortal-II SLBM and Ravana-B submarines carrying Summanus boost-glide missiles. These ships are all nuclear propelled, quiet and deep diving. They move together in widely-dispersed packs, communicating by ultra-low frequency encoded channels with each other and with higher command. SM-CGM squadrons typically spend their entire 6-month deployments below the surface running in quiet conditions; they are the primary strike mechanism for nuclear deterrent possessed by the Marquesan Forces aux Armes; the Strix class boats of these squadrons are frequently asked to perform escort duty for surface convoys, but the primary mission is always protection of the Ravana-A's, which are always escorted. Because the Ravana-B's are sonically and physically identical to the Ravana-A submarines, they make an extremely effective decoy for the nuclear-armed submarines the squadron is organized to protect. The Immortal-II SLBM carries a variable payload of either 3 large 1.4 kiloton airburst warheads or 8 smaller surface-contact detonation warheads, designed to crush missile silos and the most deeply buried and hardened command bunkers. Summanus missiles fired from the Ravana-B's are also typically nuclear armed, but have a much shorter range of roughly 1,000 kilometers and a hypersonic, but still much slower and much lower altitude attack profile than the powerful Immortal-II. Kali torpedoes aboard all submarine types can be nuclear armed as well, however Strix class Fast Attack submarines typically reserve only a few nuclear warheads per boat and ship captains report preferring to use the conventional warheads on all but the most challenging and urgent targets.

The îles de Remire are an archipelago just offshore of the Marquesan mainland. Among them, the island city of Tahuata makes a perfect backdrop for the Grande École Militaire that Commande de Mouvement calls home, the Rangi Marukasegi complex. Movement Command is in some ways the logistics trains for all air, land and sea echelons in the Marquesan Forces aux Armes, separated off from the warfighting elements and grouped together for the sake of simplicity. Handling all logisticical issues as a unified group created greater standardization, better research and development and simplified purchasing for theFMA. CDM is comprised of four sections; the Corps Logistique au Sol, headquartered at the Maruni Uma Quartermaster Center & School, there is Corps Logistique Aéroportée and the Maruni Abenoseimei Battle Management Center & School, Corps Logistique Navale and the Oshikini Chizimi Moji Sealift Center & School, and lastly Médecin de Combat and the Mitsumori Asanoha Directorate of Combat Medicine. These four Écoles de Guerre comprise a massive, sprawling campus with facilities all over the island. Massive airfield facilties, staging grounds, motorpools, port facilities with loading and unloading cranes, hundreds of warehouses and command facilities, in addition to dining, barracks and instruction facilities, parade grounds, etc. Sweeping offshore Exclusive Use zones encompass more than 1,000 square kilometers of seawater for training vessel crews on replenishment at sea, encompassing islands and bays used for practicing amphibious landings and airmobile rescue operations. CDM ships remain in their ports at ready condition until called upon; because these troops are responsible for moving all others, they have the shortest deployment notice windows of all FMA personnel; typically on the order of 2-6 hours. Crews are on shift standby for rotations of 6 months, during which time they can be called up at any moment and must be ready to board their ships or aircraft and deploy anywhere in the world. Rangi Marukasegi teaches orderly high-speed scrambles, effective defensive fleet and formation flying and convoy movement, rapid deployment and conducts amphibious landing drills in all weather, all seasons, day and night. The extremely high standard of driver, pilot and vessel navigator training requires an intense instruction tempo with special attention given to driving competency in less than ideal conditions; the school goes to great lengths to create training realism for combat scenarios, including numerous movement under fire exercises with live gunnery. Corps Logistique au Sol has a long and proud tradition as a corps of Quartermasters and couriers; in many extremely remote locations, LS-CDM still handles delivery of mail and supplies as they have customarily done for a hundred years. Each Battalion of LS-CDM is broken up into four Heavy Motor Companies, or HMC's. With six Battalions per Lance, each Lance contains 24 companies in total and roughly 21,000 military vehicles. LS-CDM is an active duty echelon, its soldiers train in all weather and maintain 24 hour a day readiness to deploy often on only hours of notice. HMC's go wherever the Hussars, Dragoons, Grenadiers and Chausseurs of Commande de Guerre Terrestre go, traveling with the rearward elements and providing fuel, ammunition and supplies while hauling the shipping containers of the combat elements on Road-Trains. Each HMC carries with it a tracked Engineering Breacher/Recovery Vehicle, with cranes, winches and welding equipment allowing the HMC to make on the spot repairs and recoveries quickly without waiting for the military engineering echelon to advance an element into the area. HMC's are divided by role, with Petroleum companies, Ordinance companies, Quartermaster companies and Road Train companies, of roughly equal personnel size. A Battalion is organized in such a way that the four companies assigned to it can provide broad logistical support to dozens of Lances in a combat theater, reliving those echelons of the need to provision for logistics and allowing the logistical elements to make use of more lightly-armored and armed vehicles and variants.

Corps Logistique Aéroportée is responsible for the movement of men, material, fuel, ordinance, vehicles and all the other necessities of war to combat theaters with the utmost necessity. In places that cannot be reached by sea, LA-CDM is the only option for the most urgent deployments of combat echelons. Servicemembers assigned to this branch have the shortest Activation Notice time of any echelon, typically two hours. Aircraft assigned to this branch are kept in scramble-ready condition with full fuel tanks, and crews are trained to stand 12-hour "Ready-Up's" or on-call shifts where the scramble alarm can be given at a moment's notice. When a combat element must deploy without delay to a theater of operations, it is always LA-CDM that has its wings in the air first. This capability centers around the workhorse RST.260 Derecho, a twin-engined large cargo jet with more than 50 tons airlift capacity. Augmenting this are intercontinental range, carrier-launchable Khonsu four-engined supply aircraft, which serve as mid-air refuelers during deployments and ferry important personnel swiftly in and out of theater. Additionally, Vulcan Tilrotor Dropships and Strider Utility Gunships provide true VTOL airlift capacity to LA flights.

Logistique Navale is truly the backbone of the Marquesan Forces aux Armes; the 1,100 Lances of LN-CDM are kept at a high-readiness condition with 6 hour deployment notifications and crews that stand 12-hour standby shifts. LN is always the first asset that needs to move in the event of a combat deployment, its fast sealift ships are of two different types; the Qarin class Amphibious Assault Ships and the Prosperine class cargo ships which exist in three different configurations, as an oiler, as a replenishment vessel and as a RO/RO or cargo carrier. These ships ensure that even large, vehicle-heavy combat units can move with speed and efficiency; LN ships load vehicles, supplies and soldiers directly from those units home ports; military sealift takes those units directly to the combat theater and can make contested landings with beachable landing ships. LN trains relentlessly on rapid embarkations and deployments, amphibious assault training is conducted at Oshikini Chizimi Moji in all weather conditions and all seasons; amphibious assault training is conducted with active military units and live fire gunnery to ensure the most realistic training environment possible. The two different ship types facilitate very different mission profiles; together they allow field commanders to deploy a spread of assets easily to both secure ports and hostile areas quickly with minimum time required for deployment.

The 1,190 Mobile Hospital units that comprise Médecin de Combat are a special, totally unarmed echelon of the Marquesan Forces aux Armes; its 390 Lances maintain an extremely high state of readiness and deploy with combat units wherever they go regardless of the threat level. Staffed with Conscientious Objectors recruited chiefly from the body of civilian medical professionals, MC-CDM is devoted to the treatment of the dying and the dead regardless of their nationality or status on the battlefield. All MC-CDM vehicles, vessels and aircraft are unarmed and painted completely in Anti-Flash White with subdued markings in red. A Mobile Hospital's vehicles can be stationed deep inland, but in combat theaters, these units chiefly deploy from water, making use of their specialized Prosperine, Windigo and Qarin class ships with massively expanded hospital facilities to ferry wounded soldiers back and forth to the ships with Gharial-B Field Hospitals and ambulance-specialized Habu Scout Mobility Vehicles, and the most urgent cases ferried back on Strider VTOL's and Vulcan Tiltrotors. Each Mobile Hospital has 8 Qarin class amphibious transports, which have been converted into beachable hospitals; the vessels run up on the beach and open their bay doors, using their Kharon drones to identify wounded with high definition thermal imagers and dispatching either ground or air assets depending on the severity of the situation on the ground. Much larger surgical facilities, prosthetic fabrication facilities and mortuary facilities are aboard the Windigo and Prosperine class ships owned by MC. A Mobile Hospital is often deployed to disaster areas, for foreign aid purposes and frequently accompany the logistics trains of large combat deployments. The totally disarmed ships, aircraft and vehicles are all armored and are not stripped of strictly defensive-only systems like the Mahui Layered Defenses Suite, but all have been stripped of weapons and weapon mounts and specially-outfitted at the Mitsumori Asanoha GEM to maximize the interior spaces for treatment of wounded. MC-CDM personnel swear an oath to render aid to all those encountered who require it, regardless of the uniform they wear; Medics on the battlefield are treated with special status and are recognized by FMA personnel as non-combatants. Personnel in this echelon must enter selection with a medical-background degree and have an additional requirement that they must already be working in the medical field. Though not a requirement of the branch, MC-CDM is most frequently staffed with personnel who identify as objecting to engaging in combat.

DDR makes up the largest single branch of the Forces Marquises aux Armes both in absolute funding and in personnel; slightly less than half of all the naval vessels and wheeled vehicles registered to the FMA are assigned to Défense du Royaume, which is staffed with Citizen Soldiers, who live in the communities they serve rather than living in military barracks; Citizen Soldiers serve a term of 5 years, as Regular Soldiers do, but at 50% the rate of pay. The five Echelons of DDR each have very different and specific missions with wide varieties in training methods and intensities, each tasked with a specific role in the defense of the Marquesan States, from within and without. The Gendarmes Urbaine represent nearly 80 million personnel on their own, headquartered at the Inyo Daki Kashiwa College of Criminal Justice, on the grounds of the Yotsu Oni Kashiwa GEM. Inyo Daki Kashiwa runs a high intensity training program, broken into equal parts legal school and law enforcement tactics. The training program lasts for one year at the regular military pay rate, during which time students live and work at the College and are held to the same standards as the other active military echelons. L'Arrière-Pays et les Frontières, or Wilderness & Boundaries Defense exclusively recruits from the body of pilots and drone operators that have served at least one enlistment at combat status flying supersonic fixed-wing aircraft with another branch of the FMA. APF is headquartered at the Denko Inazuma Aviator's College at Rae Baeli, and is tasked with high-speed patrol, observation and interdiction missions; its pilots are the only pilots in the FMAwho receive a qualification to fly the intercontinental-range Erinys bomber. Flights routinely carry nuclear ordinance and are made at high mach numbers over extremely long durations, the aircraft has a reputation for wanting experienced hands to fly. The stealthy Erinys bomber is the largest and most powerful military aircraft in the Marquesan arsenal; APF flies it in missions over the highly contested waters of Gholgoth at very high altitudes, both to monitor the waterways and to ensure that the response time to any crisis in the region is extremely minimal. The Gendarmes Navale operate squadrons of Garuda class Swift Patrol Gunboats, Tangaroa-II class Aviation Patrol Destroyers, Shora class Tactical Gunnery Destroyers and Damballa class ASW Hunter/Killer Frigates. These ships, together, defend the coastal shallows and hotly contested local waters around The Marquesan States, in Gholgoth. GN-DDR Aviation Patrol Destroyers carry a flight of 18 Revenant Agile Patrol Fighters, a class of small, single-engine fighter aircraft which can sprint into supersonic speeds but are designed for moderate altitude subsonic crusing. These missions are most often "on the job training" for pilots who want to learn how to fly supersonic fighter aircraft in preparation for a transfer to another branch. Shora class Destroyers escort the small, lightweight carriers providing high-volume air defense, while Damballa class frigates lay and then patrol their nets of long-endurance armed sonobuoys, hunting for submarines crossing into Marquesan waters. Gendarmes Navale is headquartered at the Neji Inazumabishi Maritime Security College; their mission is to provide reliable fighter cover and submarine defense for shipping routes, commonly engaging Fast Attack Craft and pirate vessels from the air with a mixture of guns, rockets, bombs and missiles. While these missions can take pilots overland, GN-DDR pilots are tasked with maintaining order in high-traffic shipping and air transit lanes, weeding out hostile aircraft, interception of unauthorized contacts and validating flight and oceanic transit plans for aircraft, airships and vessels transiting Marquesan home waters. Gendarmes Aéroportée is the primary operator of a system referred to as a "Steel Pagoda" Battery, which is a comprehensive multi-vehicle array of surface to air missiles, anti-aircraft guns, a high-resolution wideband tracking radar and a command center vehicle. Steel Pagodas are highly mobile; the agile vehicle chassis' permit the battery to set up quickly in extremely rugged terrain without the benefit of prepared sites. Using a mixture of tracked and wheeled vehicles, the Steel Pagoda batteries of GA-DDR are most often seen in place distributed around cities, moving vehicles at night or at low traffic times to reposition in a pseudo-random manner to frustrate satellite imagery of a given city's defensive posture. These personnel are tasked with ensuring the coherent defense of Marquesan airspace from a wide variety of threats; in the event of a general invasion, GA-DDR batteries would be the first soldiers to see combat, so the echelon as a whole is kept at a very high state of readiness and the Chiwani Torii Ballistics College has some of the most active impact ranges of any training academy in the FMA, operating under live fire, "Red Flag" conditions more than 350 days a year. Citizen Soldiers who distinguish themselves in this role are often invited to transfer to the Grenadiers, operating the more complicated "Iron Palace" system. Lastly, Le Fleur Noir, often referred to simply as "The Black Flower" provides the FMA with its own dedicated research and development arm, while also functioning as the National Intelligence Service. FN-DDR is an elite, invitation-only force which only accepts the highest scoring Selectees, and from the 95th Percentile body, only those who distinguish themselves during training and are promoted early can be considered for invitation to Le Fleur Noir's Itowani Umenohana Intelligence College. FN personnel work closely with the Chausseurs Spéciale and in practice, FN-DDR's most senior positions are staffed by Chausseurs who have served three or more 5-year enlistments in that echelon and remain with FMA so that the force as a whole may continue to benefit from tenured experience. The Gendarmes Urbaine are headquartered at the Inyo Daki Kashiwa College of Criminal Justice in Rae Baeli, Darjeeling; during training, Citizen Soldiers receive full active military pay and are held to the same high standards as the active military echelons; training for Gendarmes Urbaine takes one year, with preference given to Selectees with a degree in Criminal Justice or a related field. Each of the 990 Metropolitan Districts in The Marquesan Union contains roughly 15,150,000 people; cities of this size require a large body of Law Enforcement Officers to uphold order and ensure the safety of all. Each Marquesan city is defended from within and without by a division of Gendarmes, or roughly 80,000 personnel, with a ratio of 1 Gendarme to every 190 people as an aggregate. Inside each city, the 10 Lances of each division have responsibility for one Arrondissement, each Lance has a headquarters in each arrondissement called a Castra, constructed by arraying the Lance's shipping-container buildings into a double-height exterior wall, with a large interior yard where the Lance's motorpool, aircraft facilities and muster yards are in plain view. Each GU-DDR Lance constructs a detention facility at the center of each yard; the facilities once completed are walled with rock-filled HESCO bastions and protected observation towers, called Gabions. From these ten facilities in every city, the Gendarmes patrol the city as Brigades which patrol the city, each arrondissement divided into 72 Brigade Areas. The Brigade is most visible from its Habu Scout Mobility Vehicles. These light-armored vehicles are designed for military use; at 7 tons they are significantly heavier than traditional civilian patrol cars; the vehicles are armed and painted as all Marquesan tactical vehicles are, with Gendarmes Urbaine markings in black on the doors, hood and rear of all vehicles, and equipped with high-intensity green LED strobes and 115 dB sirens. Each Brigade can also call upon 8x8 Gharial-B Field Hospitals, or 10x10 Typhos-F and Typhos-G Fire Apparatus' to respond to emergency situations. Each Brigade has a roving 8x8 Gharial-C Command Center, which moves in the combat area with the brigade, allowing the Brigade's commanding officer to be out in the field in case of any issue requiring his or her attention. Every Brigade has at its disposal two Corax helicopters, which allow the Gendarmes Urbaine to engage in pursuits without massive manpower-heavy chases and large gunfights which put lives at risk; the Helicopter may be authorized to fire if a clear opportunity to take a shot is presented, however GU-DDR discourages the use of deadly force, especially with aerial weapons, unless the situation is extremely dire. Gendarmes are most often the face of the FMA to the average person on the street; the tactical vehicles and black uniforms of GU-DDR are a common sight throughout The Marquesan States, these personnel are first responders and despite being a military force, Gendarmes Urbaine are highly-educated and often go on to continue their education in psychological fields that make them highly adept as a force at de-escalation and negotiation. Despite being a military force, the Gendarmes have a reputation for helpfulness and kindness, often seen rendering aid in the case of vehicle breakdowns and accidents, engaging in rescue operations and walking street patrols with instructions to render aid to anyone in need of it, regardless of nationality, status or any other factor.

L'Arrière-Pays et les Frontières, or the Boundaries Defense Service in short is an elite echelon of the Forces Marquises aux Armes headquartered at the Denko Inazuma Aviator's College, in Rae Baeli, Darjeeling which recruits its pilots exclusively from the air crews of other echelons that have served at least one combat enlistment. The Aviator's College only accepts prior combat pilots because of the difficulty and threat level of APF's mission, which is to overfly the huge Marquesan territorial boundaries and waters at high speeds and high altitudes making regular, systematic visual observations of any movements along the borders or in outlying regions. APF flights are used to ensure the security of restricted maritime areas and to respond swiftly to problems quickly when called upon. Training lasts for a year of advanced flight school; dogfighting against Marquesan and foreign-built fighters results in an annual wargames against the Gendarmes Navale and Corps de Guerre Aeronavale called Blood Chalice. (This year in its 21st iteration, Operation Blood Chalice XXI) Across open waterways, APF has three aircraft types that assist the servicemembers of its 5,700 Lances in completion of their mission, which are operated from inland runways, with Lances typically stationed on the grounds of large regional airports with long runways. The wings are built around their 10 Erinys bombers, which are stealthy variable-geometry four engined bombers which are optimized for extended missions at high supersonic speeds. Erinys has massive intercontinental range which is made indefinite with mid-air refueling; it is designed to carry nuclear and non-nuclear payloads in the form of 12 large-frame missiles, which can be up to 10 meters in length. Providing point defense interception and limited bomber escort are lightweight, nimble Spitfire Lightweight Multirole Fighters. The Spitfire fighter uses two low-bypass turbofan engines to propel it to its 16,000 meter ceiling in just under a minute, its canard/delta configuration produces very low wing loading and extremely sharp maneuverability with fly-by-light full computer control. The Spitfire LMF is stealthy, fast and agile, it carries a primary load of Misericorde multirole missiles which can engage air, ground or naval targets with an advanced four-mode seeker and tandem warheads; the missiles and guns carried aloft by the LMF make it an extremely capable dogfighter, which is often the first air asset scrambled in the event of a hostile or unidentified contact incursion into territorial waters or homeland airspace. APF also launches the Meduza high speed reconnaissance drones from airports, especially those near the coasts and borders. A very long Linear Induction Motor track is laid adjacent to a runway; when called upon to launch, the solid-fueled Meduza rocket drones are loaded onto the LIM and accelerated to supersonic velocity. At launch velocity, the rocket-augmented Scramjet engine fires, and the drone is released from the catapult, which is then allowed to decelerate as the drone flies free. Meduza drones fly above Mach 3 for the duration of their mission profiles; they carry aloft super high definition cameras across the electromagnetic spectrum and an Active Phased Array Multifuntion Radar. The drones are most often used for flying over very hostile areas like actively-defended hostile borders and for imaging fleets of warships in international waters, occupied and contested areas, battlefields and any other circumstance where armed overflight would be considered a hostile act. Meduza drones can complete a 6,000 kilometer circuit route in an hour and a half, they are the first option for long range direct observation without reliance on satellites in the 21st century battlespace when such platforms can be subject to ASAT and ABM missiles. The low observability, very high speed, small size and high agility of the Meduza drones coupled to their 26,000 meter operating altitude place them outside the capabilities of a great many Surface-to-Air or Air-to-Air missile to intercept; the time to identify and intercept a Meduza drone in flight make it a challenging target; the drones lack their own onboard missile defense, however the sensors and communication network beam back detailed information about any attacking missile in flight as the drone performs computer-controlled evasive maneuvers; if a drone is lost to combat action, the information it provides about the attack and the force that brings down the Meduza drone assist APF in prosecuting the target with powerful, long range standoff munitions fired by the Erinys bombers. Armed and stealthy subsonic "Archon" Aggressor Drones patrol the skies with extremely well managed radar, acoustic and thermal signatures, carrying either anti-tank submunitions or heat-seeking "Misericorde" missiles, often used for common patrol routes over long stretches of the Marquesan border. APF is the only branch of DDR which routinely exposes Citizen Soldiers to deployments offshore and combat operations. As such, this branch has a much higher average rank than most any other, including the crews who maintenance and support the air crews themselves.
Air crews on combat missions receive active Soldats Regulaire pay, and will continue to do so for the length of time that any crew spends deployed.

The 57 Armadas of Gendarmes Navale are responsible for patrolling high-traffic commercial shipping lanes; GN-DDR's mission takes it throughout Marquesan coastal shallows and islands, and deep into international waters. As a military branch, GN is considered to have limited expeditionary capability, though offshore deployments are highly uncommon. The Neji Inazumabishi Maritime Security College gives Selectees a year of training in anti-submarine warfare, pilot's school both for helicopter and fixed wing pilots, naval gunnery, navigation and a wide variety of related subjects. Pilots graduating Neji Inazumabishi can transfer to another echelon or branch after an enlistment with qualifications that allow them to be considered for more complicated systems than the Revenant fighters and Corax helicopters flown by GN-DDR. The 36 Wings in each Lance of GN are built around their Tangaroa-II class Aviation Patrol Destroyers; these small catamaran carriers are roughly the size and weight of a catamaran car ferry, too small to mount electromagnetic or steam catapults, these vessels are designed with a Ski-Jump ramp. Each carrier sails with a squadron of 18 Revenant Agile Patrol Fighters, one of the smallest combat-capable aircraft carriers in the world. Revenant fighters are extremely lightweight; the single low-bypass turbofan engine and large delta wings give Revenant such excellent thrust to weight ratio and low wing loading that the fighters take off on the ski-jump regardless of the direction of the wind with a full combat load. Tangaroa-II carriers have extremely shallow draft and can operate in coastal shallows inaccessable to other vessels; they most often use an island as obscuration and radar cover, or sail along shipping lanes nearby the commercial traffic. Pilots are called upon to maintain consistent, regular fighter cover over peaceful maritime shipping routes; this action keeps shipping free of piracy deep into international waters near the Marquesan States, often as far as three days sail at 38 knots cruising speed, or roughly 5,000 kilometers, from the coastline. GN patrol routes typically last a week, with crews rotating on a weekly basis to allow them to maintain civilian jobs and live with their families. Damballa class frigates and Shora class destroyers accompany the catamaran carriers, acting both as escorts for defense of the naval asset, but as a further deterrent to piracy, especially in heavily-armed Gholgoth, where the ambient threat level is extraordinarily high. The Damballa class frigates are primarily responsible for laying and maintaining comprehensive networks of armed "Seadevil" sonobuoys; each sonobuoy has a downward-looking intercept Ring Sonar; attached to a 1,500 meter tether is an upward-looking Ultra-Low Frequency (ULF) transducer, intended to fall below any thermocline regardless of the water temperatures, and exceeding the maximum crush depth of every known military submarine ever built. Together, the upward looking transducer and downward looking ring sonar constitute a trap, which passively listens to regular pulses from the ULF transducer. Anything transiting between the two is imaged in beautiful detail by the ULF pings. If an unidentified or hostile submarine is detected in the trap, the Seadevil mine releases a wire-guided depth charge on a 1 kilometer tether, which free-falls silently, guided by the sonar trap. The Seadevil mines use a high-efficiency solar concentrator cell under a focusing lens on the top of the sonobuoy and a salt water battery to maintain power; the sonobuoys are networked, so a detonation, a sonobuoy failure or destruction will alert the Damballa class frigate patrolling the net. Once alerted, or if the frigate itself detects a contact, the Damballa class frigates are among the fastest surface combatants in the world, and their armament of rocket-launched homing torpedoes and heavy wire-guided torpedoes, in addition to its 103mm high velocity deck gun allow the frigate to attack submarines with ruthless efficiency. Shora class Tactical Gunnery Destroyers assigned to GN-DDR often take stationary positions in the harbors of coastal cities or take up checkpoint positions along high-volume shipping routes. This allows crews to consume fuel very slowly; if called upon to move the destroyer in response to trouble with pirates or a ship running the checkpoint, the Shora can fire both of its turbine engines and sprint at high speed with a large fuel reserve. The massive, 6-emplacement armament of the Shora class destroyer is intended for High Volume Air Defense, (HIVAD) but the destroyers have a reputation as "pocket battleships" which are capable of tearing apart huge volumes of fast attack and most warships up through many cruiser classes with the fire from its eight 138mm guns and its pair of 5-barrel 45.2mm rotary guns. Checkpoints are serviced by GN-DDR's fleet of 160-ton Garuda class Swift Patrol Gunboats. These heavily armed craft are fast and extremely maneuverable; their extremely shallow draught permit them to sail up nearly every major river in The Marquesan States and abroad. Garuda class gunboats assigned to GN perform routine boardings in addition to physical, visual and electromagnetic inspections of civilian cargo ships transiting into Marquesan territorial waters. GN's complex mission means that servicemembers so-assigned are kept at a very high state of readiness and can experience combat action against pirates and the like many times during a single enlistment given the threat level and frequency of short, shipboard deployments.

GA-DDR is responsible for defending the 990 cities of the Marquesan Union from air attack; in the modern 21st century environment, no city no matter how far inland is inviolable from missiles, falling MIRV warheads or air attack; to this end, the FMA developed the "Iron Pagoda" High Volume Air Defense Network, comprised of an 8x8 Gharial-C Command Center vehicles, a 10x10 Typhos-O truck carrying a 60-kilowatt active phased array Bellatrix radar, four Orcus-B Mobile Area Defense Systems carrying Fire Lance missiles and a 28.7mm rotary gin, four 10x10 Typhos-M trucks carrying SAM.155 Ahriman Surface-to-Air Missiles and two 8x8 Gharial-D munitions haulers. This 12-vehicle Battery is highly road-mobile and simple to set up. Typically, a Steel Pagoda battery will disperse in an area of several city blocks; the Gendarmes Aéroportée are dispersed with roughly 70 GA-DDR Batteries that can be activated in each Arrondissement of the country's cities; in peacetime the GA-DDR Batteries rotate air defense duties on a weekly basis and in wartime, multiple batteries are activated simultaneously. The Chiwani Torii Ballistics College at Rae Baeli serves as the command center for GA-DDR's 37 Bombardment Commands, roughly two per Prefecture, with an additional Bombardment command held in deployable reserve for moments of great need or an allied foreign requirement for land-based High Volume Air Defense. If activated for overseas deployment, GA-DDR batteries deployed receive regular military pay during their deployments. The Steel Pagoda battery networks three weapons together with a wide-band Active Phased Array Radar; the Bellatrix radar and command center are typically at the center of the Battery's array; each Orcus-B and Typhos-M combination is assigned a quadrant to defend; the two vehicles will deploy together to their quadrant and set up, with the Typhos-M SAM.155 TEL parked with its wheels elevated on hydraulic stands and its folding corrugated steel cover in place. If called upon to fire, the TEL will shed the cover over its missile carousels in a few seconds in an automated sequence; the missiles are typically fired beyond visual range before locking on; their extremely high attack speed at Mach 4+ and 36 kilometer ceiling mean that few few manned or unmanned aircraft are capable of escaping the Ahriman missile. Its massive Annular Blast/Fragmentation warhead produces kills on even very large aircraft, even with an indirect, "near miss" engagement where the missile must detonate outside ideal distance; the hypervelocity hardened copper rods released by the warhead tear through airframes even at great distance, and the concussion produced by the missile's detonation is often enough to shear off empennage or wings without directly impacting the aircraft. At closer ranges, slower speeds and lower altitudes, the Fire Lance missiles fired by the Orcus-B MADS are extremely maneuverable and very fast for small missiles; though they can be shoulder-fired, they are mounted to 11-round pods on the Orcus-B. Fire Lance is designed to prosecute pop-up targets like fast wheeled and tracked armor, attack helicopters and fixed-wing fighters and bombers, cruise missiles and drones with extremely high agility and a sophisticated thermal seeker. Augmenting this is the four-barrel 28.7mm cannon on the Orcus-B, which produces 2.5 or 5.5 second bursts of 200 or 400 rounds; the very high muzzle velocity and ballistically-optimized rounds fired by the FA29 gun have sufficient power to engage light tracked and wheeled armored vehicles; it is a devastating weapon at ranges of up to 9 kilometers which is a deadly threat to flying targets inside its engagement window. The Orcus-B protects the SAM.155 Transporter/Erector/Launchers and the TELs provide overlapping coverage envelopes that are coherently monitored in the C, L, S and X bands by the powerful Bellatrix radar, which is optimized for detection of 5+ Generation stealth aircraft, high speed missiles and warheads falling from the upper atmosphere.

The Itowani Umenohana Intelligence College is the most secretive of the Écoles de Guerre; it is an entirely closed campus, which is at all times off-limits to visitors and entrance past its gates is by invitation only. Le Fleur Noir fulfills several roles; as internal police, or provost for the Forces Marquises aux Armes, as an internal and strategic intelligence agency, and as a research and development directorate for military weapons. FN-DDR accepts the very highest scorers in selection who either by choice or necessity retain some civilian duties during the course of their military enlistments. 9.28 million personnel are employed by FN, whose broad-reaching mission includes law enforcement (including criminal investigation) on military property and concerning military personnel, human intelligence collection from overt, covert and clandestine sources including interrogation of prisoners of war and both state and non-state actors. Intelligence analysts investigate who is committing crimes, how, when, where and why. They then provide recommendations on how to stop or curb the offences. As part of this, analysts produce profiles of crime problems and individual subjects, and produce both strategic (overall, long-term) and tactical (specific, short-term) assessments Collection, validation and analysis of intelligence occurs in one echelon; a large portion of FN-DDR's staff is employed by the Defense Sciences Directorate and the Special Projects Directorate, which together provide research and development of military weapons and systems, and is responsible for the contracts underpinning the Marquesan Armed Forces Aircraft Commission, the Marquesan Naval Warship Commission and the Marquesan Ground Warfare Commission.

The Reserve Corps of Engineers keeps its headquarters in metropolitan, sprawling Dosha, on the coastline of the bustling prefecture of Shanti. Dosha is in many respects the beating industrial heart of the country, massive metal foundries, factories and mines are the primary economic driver in Shanti Prefecture; nestled between three of the largest steel mills in the country is the Omodaka Kikyo GEM, for the Reserve Corps of Engineers. CRI is the smallest military branch with 1,190 Lances of Military Engineers and an additional 3,750 Lances of unarmed servicemembers. CRI's mission is twofold; assist the Forces Marquises aux Armes in clearing hazardous obstacles, crossing rivers, building roads, schools, hospitals, military facilities etc, and also building and maintaining civilian infrastructure in The Marquesan States. The Omodaka Kikyo GEM has four Écoles attached to it, the Kamashiki Kikyo Sapper Training Center, the Mitsumori Ndeshiko Engineering Center & School, the Mizu ni Tachi Aoi Electromagnetics Academy and the Sangai Tachibanabishi Architectural Academy. The GEM itself is a massive complex with expansive driving courses in an 800 square kilometer forested preserve with rivers, hills, marshes and minefield training ranges. The Ingénierie Militaire maintain a high state of deployable readiness, prepared to sealift their vehicles within 12 hours of first notice; these units follow combat formations anywhere they go, assisting with all the complex tasks of moving hundreds of heavy armored vehicles over unprepared terrain or areas denied to Marquesan combat presence by a hostile power. IM-CRI clears the way, lays bridges, moving rubble, vehicles and whatever else stands in the way of the combat echelons. IC-CRI, CP-CRI and TP-CRI concern themselves exclusively with civilian infrastructure in the Marquesan States; roads, power plants, communications, bridges, dams, earth and water works. All servicemembers of Corps de Réserve d'Ingénierie wear RED uniforms with GRAY epaulets and BLACK rank insignia. IM-CRI is responsible for performing combat engineering, construction and demolition tasks in combat environments. IM is the only armed echelon of CRI, with 14.9mm twin-barrel machine guns mounted to the roof of the Habu Scout Mobility Vehicles owned by each Sapper Group. Each Group has Orcus-C engineering vehicles and Typhos-H Bridging Vehicles, which make up the backbone of the IM-CRI Groups. In addition, cargo carriers, mobile cranes, bobtail trucks and an 8x8 Gharial-C Command Center vehicle keep the Sapper Group functioning as a unit, moving with combat echelons wherever engineering support is required. There are just under 60,000 deployable Sapper Groups in IM-CRI, which complete 3-month rotations in combat theaters when required. IM-CRI retains a high combat readiness level, with units in-rotation prepared to deploy with all vehicles on a 12-hour notice. IM's Sapper Groups are meant to move with the forward-most elements, surveying terrain, clearing minefields, laying bridges and building runways, roads, waypoints and defensible facilities, working cooperatively with LS-CDM Heavy Motor Companies to ensure that Marquesan and allied tanks have safe bridges to cross and clear lanes on the ground free from mines and improvised explosives. Unexploded Ordinance Disposal is a specialty of IM, which trains some of the world's foremost experts in demolitions and improvised explosives at Kamashiki Kikyo.

IC has no responsibility to combat roles, deployments or missions, rather IC recruits professionals with technical backgrounds in a variety of fields who have active careers or large families but who meet the induction requirements for the FMA. This echelon's sole responsibility is the construction, maintenance and management of civilian infrastructure inside the Marquesan States. Generally, one Lance is assigned to each major Metropolitan District in The Marquesan States, with two hundred Lances dedicated to maintenance of assets like highways, beaches, power plants and other infrastructure between cities.[/floatright]

The Information Technology & Science Guild and the Communication & Journalism Guild regulate a national communications network carried on a highly secure intranational Wi-Fi system. The network of towers, nodes and cables is operated by a variety of companies offering a variety of service plans and equipment to end users, operating on cooperatively-maintained infrastructure. The Marquesan National Data Infrastructure network, or MNDI, employs a tandem communications network across the entire country, based on an ultra fast underground fiber optic cable network with an average throughput of 125 Megabytes Per Second. This signal is carried on armored, EM-shielded cable buried below ground across 80% of the network and carried above ground on earthquake-proof, wind-proof, tsunami resistant towers for the remaining 20% of the network. The network employs an array of hundreds of thousands of distribution nodes with one node for every roughly 16 square kilometers. These nodes also serve as bases for the country's national "Super Wi-Fi" network, transmitting Voice over IP and data connections across the country with 99.98% coverage of the entire land area of the Union.

The "Super Wi-Fi" system, formally named the Marquesan National Data Infrastructure, or "Mindi" for short has an average throughput of 10.5 Megabytes Per Second download speed and 5.5 Megabytes Per Second upload speed. These towers use 60KW amplifiers to transmit overlapping coverage across the country to which all cellular phones, computers and wireless devices may freely connect without contracts or fees. This combined network allows users to connect to the hard fiber network for faster internet or television connections with higher clarity, but gives Marquesans the flexibility to connect and make voice calls or connect to the internet anywhere in the country. With no terrain or atmospheric obstructions, each tower is designed to be able to transmit unaided over 100 kilometers in line-of-sight, though throughput will suffer at such distances. This Wireless Regional Area Network (WRAN) is said to be usable as far as 20 kilometers out to sea from any populated Marquesan territory, with voice calls made as far out as 40 kilometers and simple text messages sent and received as far as 60 kilometers. In many areas, wireless repeaters and secondary amplifiers are used to boost signal into deeply congested areas or urban environments where buildings may present a significant obstruction to the wireless signal.

The MNDI network is highly secure, carrying 2,048-Bit SSL Encryption certificates and passworded with a 26-character ASCII password, double encrypted with B-SPEKE Cryptographic Key Exchange and two-way verified with SHA-2 512 Cryptographic Hash, ensuring a secure connection on both sides. The password is unique to each user and matched to their Personal Credentials Card, which when verified to a new computer or wireless device, will allow each user to access their personal cloud storage and home network from wherever they are. VoIP is carried on the G.722 Codec, which transmits voice full duplex on two dedicated channels simultaneously at 64 kbit/s, allowing for a 50-7,000 Hz. bandwidth and crystal-clear audio quality. Data is transmitted on the 802.11ad Standard in the 8MHz range over the wireless network and utilizing unused "white space" bandwidth for backhaul of information, allowing for excellent data connection with an average of under 8ms latency for both voice and data. The MNDI network is considered to be the safest wireless data transmission system in Gholgoth while routinely winning awards for speed and reliability. In emergencies, extremely remote areas, rugged terrain or highly congested urban environments, MNDI can be backhauled over a satellite connection, though inclement weather can cause latency issues, so this failsafe system is rarely used. For high-security voice connections, VoIP calls can be made over the hard fiber network for a hard, essentially unhackable connection.
Military communications are carried by the Secured Architecture Network, Multiple Exchange Nodes interchange, or SANMEN, is a secure tactical communication system employed on all Marquesan-designed aircraft, airships, vessels, submarines, vehicles or wearable gear. The network operates on a hierarchy of secure nodes, meaning that each level of the chain of command represents a node which may communicate securely inside its own node, transmit information up the chain of command or distribute information down to lower hierarchies. Each node has access to its own information and the information of the node below it, allowing tactical communication to be distributed effectively both up and down the chain of command. SANMEN operates in "white spaces" in the radio frequency spectrum, sensing and taking advantage of unused frequencies and switching frequencies rapidly based on a tuned algorithm that makes the likelihood of intercepting SANMEN transmissions extremely low, electronically scanning between hundreds of different frequencies and optimizing communication for different conditions. (Such as a submarine needing to transmit and receive on extremely low frequencies when submerged, or large files such as streaming video needing requiring a higher frequency and line-of-sight operation to send and receive quickly. SANMEN allows for each antenna to be precisely geolocated, permitting passive monitoring of allied transponders, as in Blue Force Tracking. This also allows precise turn-by-turn directions to be promulgated across the network, coordinating movements for whole units or individual soldiers easily and accurately.

SANMEN uses a compact plasma antenna technology called PSiAN, a steerable, bandwidth-selectable antenna using tens of thousands of ultrasmall diodes built on radiation-hardened Silicon-On-Sapphire architecture with a final passivation coating of borophosphosilicate glass containing Boron-11 to absorb neutrons and most types of harmful radiation. When activated, each diode generates a cloud of electrons - the plasma - about 0.1 millimeters across. At a high enough electron density, each cloud reflects high-frequency radio waves like a mirror. By selectively activating diodes, the shape of the reflecting area can be changed to focus and steer a beam of radio waves. This "beam-forming" capability makes the antennas capable of focusing highly collimated beams of radio energy at very high data transfer rates, around 875 megabytes per second at very short distances with an average throughput of 125 megabytes per second over distances up to 20 km. Because SANMEN operates with point-to-point beams at line of sight (LOS) distances, these short-distance communications are highly resistant to electronic warfare.

SANMEN operates over an extremely wide variable frequency band, from 30 Hz to 30 GHz, allowing for both extremely high-throughput communication at short distances or for high-penetration wireless communication through obstacles (such as seawater) permitting communication with submerged vessels. A complex algorithm determines the transmitted frequency to which all SANMEN antennae are tuned, with the network switching transmitted frequencies up to 2,000 times per second, creating an extremely secure basic format. This is enabled by the PSiAN antenna, whereby the resonant frequency of the plasma and thus the transmission can be selected by active switching of diodes on the antenna. SANMEN antennae can be extremely compact, fitting into mobile devices such as cellular phones, watches or in wearable tactical gear, as in the Galea Helmet produced by Arioi Engineering & Design. At this size, SANMEN antennas transmit at 100 watts effective radiated power. The antennas and their power transformers can be scaled up for higher power and greater distance; vehicle antennas operate at 1,000 watts ERP, where aircraft operate at 10,000 watts and airships, submarines and surface vessels operate at 100,000 watts.

Operating in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) mode, SANMEN transmissions can be sent and received by passive receiver antennas over great distances, up to 300 km unaided when broadcast from a vessel or airship. While not as resistant to electronic warfare in NLOS mode, this radiated transmission is useful for broadcasts to large numbers of subscribers. When a high-priority broadcast is made, it is carried and retransmitted by any authorized antenna that receives it, promulgating the message across the entire network. In this way, a high command chain user can instantly distribute a message across the entire battlespace, such as a change in orders. SANMEN's hierarchical methodology means that smaller command chains can create secure ad-hoc networks, transmitting and receiving communications wirelessly from person-to-person using the wearable antennae in their tactical gear such as helmets or smart watches and mobile handsets. Squad level communications are therefore highly secure and allow for video, voice, images or text only messages to stream with very high fidelity, high speed and high throughput. All transmitters send and receive in either LOS or NLOS mode, but their effective radiated power is limited by their power supply. Simple messages carry much further unaided, so a simple text-only transmission or a response from an RFID "ping" may be sent when any other communication is impossible.

SANMEN allows for full radio functionality like full-duplex communication, radio sidetone, priority voice, VOX, keying the radios, push-to-talk and hot-mic capabilities across all formats and at all distances.

Power Infrastructure
Travaux Publics is an echelon of the Reserve Corps of Engineers which is tasked with maintenance of a vast network of physical infrastructure in The Marquesan States. The 1,190 Lances of TP-CRI work to generate power, provide railway and airship infrastructure and provide clean, safe water for domestic, industrial and agricultural uses. With fifteen billion residents and citizens, The Marquesan Union consumes roughly 108.66 Terawatt Hours of electricity per year, an average of roughly 7,200 Watt hours per person. This astounding figure represents a tremendous amount of energy which fuels one of the greatest industrial giants in Gholgoth. Production of this energy is accomplished from a variety of sources; 76% of all electrical production is attained through clean nuclear energy, with the remaining 24% coming from a mixture of hydroelectric, geothermal and other renewable energy sources such as solar, wind or marine energy. The Marquesan government regulates the electric industry via the Power, Refinery & Utilities Guild and provides common standards for a variety of power companies offering various power and pricing regimes to a variety of domestic, commercial and industrial clients throughout the country. The electric power industry in The Marquesas cooperatively operates and maintains a common power infrastructure and operates standardized reactor types to simplify logistics, troubleshooting and to drive down costs via economy of scale. The primary reactor type used throughout the Union is the Netane Kinetics E2SC, a Pressurized Water Reactor operating with Supercritical Coolant. The E2SC is a 3,800 Megawatt-Rated Nuclear Reactor, based on a naval reactor design by the same firm. E2SC is considered extremely safe and is both efficient and powerful. Each plant contains an average of sixteen E2SC Reactors and thirty two 1,200 Megawatt Steam Turbines, with a maintenance cycle of five years per turbine and an expected plant operation life of 60 to 80 years. Netane Kinetics, LTD. has a firm commitment to their reactors and produces parts, replacement components and modifications continually to service the 1,800-some plants throughout the country. The Netane Kinetics E2SC Reactor is described in detail below, along with the other primary missions of Travaux Publics: Water Purification, High Speed Railways and Airship Transportation.
Netane Kinetics E2SC Nuclear Reactors:
The Netane Kinetics E2SC is a light water reactor in service for domestic production of electrical power in service throughout the Marquesan Union. It is a high power design (3.2 GWe) using supercritical water as both primary coolant and neutron moderator. The entire reactor assembly was designed and built by Netane Kinetics, Ltd. in the Marquesan Union and is an advanced, fourth generation design. The reactor core itself consists of a graphite cylinder with a radius of eight meters and a height of twenty meters which includes two meter axial reflectors at the top and bottom. The core has six concentric fuel rings, each consisting of 72 hexagonal blocks with an interstitial gap of 0.2 cm. Each block contains 216 coolant channels and 432 fuel pins. The light water coolant is operated at supercritical pressure, meaning that there is no discernable difference between steam and liquid water above the critical point. The reactor core coolant is maintained at 313.7 bar with an outlet temperature of 530° C. Fine control of the water under extreme pressure and temperature is made possible by magnetohydrodynamic inline water pumps, which noiselessly and reliably circulate the radioactive primary coolant water by passing a polarized electric current through the coolant, passing it through the core and into a water/water heat exchanger.

Netane E2SC reactors burn highly enriched (above 96%) uranium fuel-cored QUADRISO particles. QUADRISO is a modification of the TRISO particle, or Tristructural-Isotropic fuel particle. In the QUADRISO particle, there are five layers of material, with the fuel kernel composed of enriched uranium in the center, coated with four layers of three isotropic materials and an inner layer of a burnable neutron poison. The four layers are a porous buffer layer made of carbon, followed by a dense inner layer of pyrolytic carbon, followed by a ceramic layer of SiC to retain fission products at elevated temperatures and to give the particle more structural integrity, followed by a dense outer layer of PyC. The inner layer directly adjacent to the fuel kernel is europium oxide which helps the fuel manage the excess of reactivity. At the beginning of life, neutrons do not reach the fuel of the QUADRISO particle because they are stopped by the burnable poison. After irradiation, the poison depletes and neutrons stream into the fuel kernel, inducing fission reactions. This mechanism compensates fuel depletion of ordinary TRISO fuel. In the prismatic core of the E2SC reactor, the fuel particles are fabricated into compacts and placed in a graphite block matrix fuel rod, which allows the reactor to run at very high temperature with enhanced safety. E2SC reactors have a refueling cycle of 30 years.

Secondary coolant for the Netane Kinetics E2SC (Electrical, 2nd Generation, Supercritical Coolant) is ordinary water which is heated in an exchanger with primary reactor coolant and passed into a supercritical boiler assisted by electric heating elements. The supercritical secondary coolant then drives high efficiency, pressure-velocity compounded steam turbines. Each reactor core operates a pair of turbines, each spinning a synchronous turbogenerator. Alternating blades and nozzles across the condensing double-reheat turbine maximize efficiency, passing steam from high pressure stages back to the supercritical boiler and reheating the steam to pass through an intermediate pressure stage twice before finally exhausting the steam back to a condenser from which it will re-enter the secondary cooling loop. A solid carbon fiber shaft transmits rotation from the turbine shaft to a synchronous turbogenerator. While only pure H2O water is used for primary or secondary coolant in the E2SC reactor system, some deposits can occur on turbine blades and so turbines must be taken apart for cleaning on an alternating five year service interval. Electricity is provided by an extremely efficient high speed generator producing 1,200 megawatts of electric power to charge the power distribution buffer.
Water & Waste Treatment:
The Marquesan Government operates 1,800 Nuclear power plants throughout the country. These sprawling complexes output enormous amounts of energy, but each one also creates enormous amounts of heat which, in most nuclear plants, is wasted in enormous outdoor cooling loops. In the Marquesan Union, this energy is used to assist in the operation of water treatment and solid waste disposal facilities, located on the land reservation of each Nuclear Energy Plant. With consideration to the country's massive population and high demand for both energy and fresh, clean drinking water, a solution to both problems was found. Each of the 1,800 Nuclear Energy plants also hosts a water treatment facility and solid waste processing facility. These facilities, which in total create almost nine thousand cubic kilometers of potable water per year are the result of an innovative design process that has been successfully replicated throughout the Union. Regulation of these energy parks falls under the National Infrastructure budget orchestrated through the Marquesan Environmental & Economic Cooperative and the Power, Refinery & Utilities Guild, along with the National Policy Institute on Domestic Affairs.

Beginning with the influent stream, the source head of each plant takes in water from a variety of sources, where it undergoes pretreatment and blending. Seawater, reactor coolant water, wastewater from domestic, agricultural and industrial sources, water pumped from underground sources and collected rainfall enters the pretreatment facility where any large solids, debris, rags and grit are removed from the influent water. The influent then travels to a series of clarifiers where the water is slowed down, providing an opportunity for suspended solids, oil and grease to either drop out of the blended influent or to float to the surface, where these impurities can be skimmed away. Following the water past the primary clarifier stages, water now passes through a Membrane Bioreactor, or MBR where it undergoes microfiltration and ultrafiltration. The middle treatment stage is through anaerobic active basins where the treated water is processed and then fully disinfected with ozone, ultraviolet irradiation and a final electromagnetic pulsed power system. The now clear water enters the final treatment stage where it is allowed to rest in a final clarifier before undergoing reverse osmosis and thermionic desalinization. Final chemical processing of the water to bring the PH balance, color and clarity within balance is done before the clear, fully disinfected fresh water leaves the plant for general use or, if used in the on-site nuclear reactors as coolant, the water undergoes an additional laboratory-grade double distillation process to produce chemically pure water.

Throughout this process, the byproducts of the water processing, including debris, ocean salt and metals, oceanic organisms, domestic, industrial and agricultural waste, scrap metal, plastics, biomedical and hazardous waste, rags, hair and grit are pre-sorted and then fed into a Plasma Gasification Arc Reactor. Once inside the reactor, an inert gas is heated by passing it through a powerful electric arc. This gas is ionized under tremendous pressure and the superheated plasma (between 5,000 and 14,000°C) is used to form a "torch" which incinerates all combustible waste and liquefies non-combustible waste into molten slag. In interacting with the plasma, molecular bonds in the waste products are broken down and molecular disassociation occurs, transferring nearly all solid waste into a gaseous phase. The carbon monoxide gas that results from pyrolysis of waste solids (in excess of 99% conversion) is then burned in on-site turbine engines which power the plasma arc torch and provides a safe, constant auxiliary power supply for the rest of the plant. The non-combustible and chemically inert slag byproduct is completely safe to handle and undergoes a secondary smelting process to remove and refine metals which are sold on the open market. Once relieved of its metal content, the inert slag is sold for construction materials, most often for road construction. With the PGAR, there is no atmospheric off-gassing and no production of smoke or soot. Any exhaust from the facility is treated with air scrubbers to ensure a near-zero ecological impact, while cleanly destroying enormous amounts of solid waste as an alternative to the presence of landfills anywhere in the country.

The 1,800 such Energy Parks in place throughout the Marquesan Union are situated in such a way that they are minimal safe distances from major population centers. On average, each sprawling plant consumes several hundred acres of land, however their collective benefit in terms of energy production, creation of clean, potable drinking water and disposal of liquid and solid wastes while simultaneously refining metals, a theoretically unlimited supply of salt and production of safe, inert slag for construction, all while remaining an ecologically responsible and viable clean energy production method is invaluable to the country. Each co-generative energy park produces 27.3 Million Cubic Meters of clean, potable drinking water and 1.3 Terawatt Hours of stable nuclear power per day. While these plants represent a massive initial investment, the model has been proven viable as the country has grown in population and expanded its borders. The energy surplus and ecology-friendly disposal of waste is a net benefit in a country where land is at a premium and landfills would be an unsightly specter among the mountains, forests and coastlines of the country.
High-Speed Rail System.
The Marquesan Transport & Warehousing Guild, in cooperation with the National Policy Institute on Domestic Affairs regulates and subsidizes a national high speed rail network. Maile Lei Infrastructure Partners was the primary contractor throughout the building process along with several subsidiary contractors, whose task it was to connect every major city within the Union and several points internationally by high speed rail. The rail system is largely funded by civilian domestic and industrial traffic, but the administrative entity, Maile Lei Ltd. also receives government funds from military contracts.

The Maile Lei HSM, or High Speed Maglev Monorail uses Magnetodynamic Suspension and Permanent Magnet Linear Motors for levitation and propulsion, creating a frictionless, high-speed system capable of sustained flight at 550 Km/h. It is based on permanent magnets and steel cores and employs a new principle: the interaction between permanent magnets installed on a vehicle and specially designed steel tracks. Thanks to the electro-mechanical design of the system, a suspended vehicle reacts instantly and automatically to any shift from its assigned position and trajectory using its own internally generated magnetic forces. Maile Lei HSM is based only on rare-earth permanent magnets and laminated steel cores covered by an aluminum layer, and does not require superconducting magnets, or complicated electromagnetic control servos. The HSM's Suspension & Propulsion system is capable of maintaining a levitation force of over 33 times the weight of the levitated magnets. Permissible lateral pressure is up to 6 tons per vehicle with a guaranteed deviation of less than 2mm. It is also capable of developing a propulsion force up to 9 tons with the vehicle weight of 25 tons and its capacity of 100 passengers. Its power system (three-phased current of constant frequency) is simple and reliable.

The HSM's track system is an innovative approach allowing several trains to pass through the same section of track at once. Two dedicated tracks on the surface are placed side-by-side, while an elevated track on vibration-isolated supports allows a train to pass on the vertical orientation and on an inverted orientation at the same time, either in the same direction or different directions. These tracks are closed off by sound-damping retaining walls, which prevent wildlife or people from moving onto the track. HSM trains can ascend much higher gradients and make sharper turns than conventionally-propelled trains and consequently, allow for fewer tunnels and much more direct routing than conventional trains. In urban environments, HSM trains are used for urban light rail transportation, though they are speed limited in these circumstances to 60 Km/h. Between cities, HSM trains haul cargo only in the inverted orientation, but can carry passengers or cargo either on the vertical elevated track or on the surface tracks. While individual trains are small in comparison to conventional trains, their speed and design allow for a far greater number of trains to operate on the same track section, with massive gains in efficiency over the macro scale.
Airship Transportation System.
The Marquesan government has always been an early adopter of emergent and innovative technologies. From the earliest days of powered flight, Marquesans have been fascinated with air travel. In those early days, heavier than air flight was haphazard, unreliable and dangerous, while lighter-than-air travel was quiet, graceful and reliable. Since then, the Marquesan government has maintained a commitment to the viability of lighter than air flight. As aircraft evolved, heavier than air flight became more reliable and the air began to fill with helicopters and aircraft of all types. This congestion, in addition to the tremendous consumption of fuel by aircraft forced the government to act and set forth standards for flight paths and altitudes for both lighter than air and heavier than air traffic. As cars also became more common, congestion on the streets and highways became a major issue as cars and motorcycles competed with heavy trucks for the right of way. A solution to both problems was found in adopting a new generation of lighter-than-air vehicles capable of transporting heavy loads or large numbers of people quickly, efficiently and quietly.

Today, Marquesan airships are as varied as cars on the road, with hundreds of different models of all types and constructions serving a great many different roles. There are civilian, agricultural, industrial and military airships in the skies of the Marquesan Union every day and, while this article will address some common types and standards, it is by no means a complete description of every airship model. Most Marquesan airships are of the rigid type, with lightweight metal or composite frames made from carbon fiber, carbon/carbon or graphene. By Marquesan law, all airships must use helium for lift and the largest, most advanced military airships use helium as both ballast and lifting gas, balancing the gas in compression tanks or in gas cell envelopes for a simple leveling tool and to prevent an airship on the ground from lifting accidentally. The largest airships use lightweight gas cooled nuclear reactors for propulsion, though most smaller airships generate power via turboshaft engines and transmit that power to their electrical systems for use in electrically-powered ducted fans to control the motion of the airship. Solar cell backup power is very commonplace aboard Marquesan airships, in an effort to conserve fuel for long journeys. Many cargo airships are used as vehicle ferries or in place of tractor/trailers on highways. While some vulnerability to inclement weather does exist, the airship system is more economical for fuel and individual airships carry far larger loads than a roadgoing vehicle could. It is estimated that 80% of all cargo shipped throughout the Union is carried for some portion of its journey by airship and transportation is a thriving, multi-trillion dollar industry largely because of it. Every city within the country contains an airship dock yard with cradles and mooring posts; well-established lanes of travel see hundreds of airships a day over a given spot on the ground and, while some air travel especially from outside the Union is carried on fixed-wing, heavier than air vehicles, most Marquesans have statistically preferred to travel by airship between cities at home, with fares from city to city averaging 50 Aureus in cost and the spacious, comfortable accommodations aboard an airship seen culturally as a more graceful means of travel.

Overview:
The modern battlefield is an environment fraught with incredible risks and hazards. In decades past, armies have slept on the ground or on crude cots when in the field, under tents that did nothing to keep out cold when the weather was cold, trapped heat when the weather was hot, offered no protection against insects, vermin, chemical, biological, nuclear or radiological attack, did nothing to keep out water and exposed soldiers to bullets and shrapnel without even the slightest protection when they were most vulnerable during their sleep. This archaic method of quartering troops was anything but conducive to success on the battlefield; soldiers fighting off exposure to the elements and to attack had no opportunity to fully rest or conduct their tasks in a safe environment. While a soldier is first and foremost a warfighter, he actually spends comparatively little of his time actually warfighting; north of 90% of his time is spent in self-care or garrison tasks. It is with this in mind that a safe and effective method of transporting soldiers, equipment, vehicles, food, water, fuel and ammunition was sought out by the Marquesan government.

A solution was found in using intermodal shipping containers to transport the necessary personnel and equipment. With a massive existent infrastructure in the form of container ships that could ship hundreds of containers simultaneously, container moving vehicles, helicopters capable of slingloading containers, cargo aircraft capable of carrying and parachute-dropping containers and a robust industry in constructing containers, the body of knowledge in how to create and move these containers quickly was vast. A container design came to light that offered a high degree of ballistic, forced entry and blast protection from a small Marquesan company called CastraTech. Castra's design was adopted by Arioi Engineering & Design, who then acquired CastraTech as a subsidiary and launched the containers into production. With hundreds of thousands of Castra containers in production for the Marquesan government and abroad, the CasCon has become a ubiquitous symbol of the FMA and of a modern, lightweight, mobile containerized military. The Castra System shipping containers are standardized-size intermodal containers which externally resemble commercial containers in use throughout Gholgoth and abroad, but are able to be fully armored and designed to be highly resistant to forced entry, blast, fragmentation and ballistic penetration. The containers, called CasCons in common parlance, are highly mobile and are designed to be networked together into modular, hardened miniature cities that can be assembled in days and provide a high degree of safety, convenience and nearly all the amenities of home regardless of where bases are placed. The mobilized CasCons can be loaded directly onto roll-on/roll-off cargo ships, transported to the conflict zone, driven off the ships and towed into place then assembled precisely as they were assembled in their home location, without soldiers being required to unpack or substantially change their lifestyle.

Eliminating tents, cots and sleeping bags as the normal living state of an army in the field has shown tremendous advantages. Injuries in garrison have dramatically decreased; soldiers are healthier, sleeping more soundly and have a higher standard of hygiene. Bases fully constructed from Castra containers and other prefabricated steel buildings show a much higher degree of protection from direct and indirect fire by the enemy. When a unit deploys, soldiers deploy along with their CasCons and maintain the same high standard of living in the field as they did in garrison, with only minor changes to the structure of the base and its overall facilities. This "Train-as-you-fight" mentality provides a great degree of proficiency among deployed soldiers and makes adapting to the deployment much easier than if soldiers had transitioned to more austere living conditions. Bases are lightweight and much more mobile than permanent structures which need to be erected from traditional building materials, while being safer on orders of magnitude than temporary tent cities and many times more hygienic. Utilizing naval sealift and strategic airlift during the deployment process would normally expose equipment to a great many risks, not the least of which is security and ever-present salt corrosion, however moving equipment and vehicles in intermodal containers exhibits very little of this risk. CasCons are externally almost indistinguishable from civilian containers and their RFID tracking tags make locating a given container simple. This simplification of the mobilizing process streamlines operations and enhances the forward posture of rapidly-deployable units that need less time to prepare for a deployment, less time to move and less time to re-orient once those units are positioned in-theater.

Each Lance-sized element of the FMA has its own base in which its 8,000 men and women live and work. These bases, often called Castras are distributed throughout the country, very often in locations of strategic importance. While designed to be permanent emplacements, each Castra can be mobilized and moved in a week's time, with no more than a week required to assemble the Castra again wherever its unit may be deployed. When permanently stationed near a Marquesan population center in home station, Castras are connected to main power lines, communications networks, water and sewage lines, but each Castra is capable of providing these services unaided when deployed. The even, symmetrical posts utilize a series of concentric access roads and are intersected by main service roads into quadrants; the compact and orderly layout of these posts with their eight fortified observation posts and earth-filled walls are highly defensible; each Lance's Castra is placed near its sister units, usually within visual distance allowing for communication in morse code by signal lamp in the event of an event requiring radio silence. A cluster of ten Castras is networked to others in its larger Division, providing a distributed network of small, defensible and mobile military posts throughout the country, serving to protect the civilian population and also to enforce its laws while maintaining a high standard of safety, hygiene and organization.

Motorpool and weapons-handling procedures are identical at home as they are in deployment theaters and bases follow nearly identical layouts both at home and on deployment. This helps servicemembers in the FMA to maintain a "muscle memory" and that familiarity breeds speed and efficiency. Bases are organized in a way that makes them both space-efficient and highly defensible while minimizing risk to soldiers. The outer perimeter wall of any FMA post is made from a layer of 2m x 3m x 2m rock and earth-filled cells of reinforced steel wire panels and geotextile liners called Reinforced Textile Gabions which can be made deeper or higher as circumstances require. Behind this perimeter wall are the various containers and modular buildings required by the deployed Lance, laid out in orderly, symmetrical patterns. While the layout of each base differs slightly,FMA Bases are generally laid out with barracks containers lining the inside of the perimeter wall with half-height Castra.RTG cells placed above the containers for additional protection from indirect fire. The perimeter wall is equipped with eight total fortified armored guard towers, called Sangars, on elevated platforms, one at every corner and at traffic control points, one of which faces each cardinal direction. Main thoroughfares face each true compass direction and intersect in the center of the base. Around this main intersection are command and control containers, power generation, communication and functional buildings.

Between the barracks and command areas are motorpool and maintenance building areas, where vehicles, aircraft and equipment are stored and maintained. The motorpool section of each Castra is laid out with bays of double thickness, double-height Gabions separating each section's vehicles. Each bay has its own Expedient Field Shelter for vehicle maintenance and Castra.206M equipment storage containers. There are eight such bays in each Castra, normally marked by each unit's flag. Each bay faces the barracks containers and outer wall, creating effectively an inner perimeter to each Castra. On the inside of this inner perimeter wall, the Lance's fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft are kept in similarly-sized bays facing the Lance's command area and the center of each Castra. In this area, runways and helicopter landing pads are placed, using a water soluble, vinyl acetate-acrylic copolymer used as a sprayed-on soil stabilizer. The soil stabilizer, called Envirotac II and affectionately nicknamed "Rhino Snot" is used for dust and debris abatement, solidifying even the softest fine sands into a hard surface rapidly and reducing the possibility of foreign object damage to aircraft engines. This layout serves the purpose of spreading out vehicle and aircraft assets, so that concentrated indirect fire bombardment is unlikely to destroy a significant portion of the unit's vehicles and aircraft. While each Lance's loadout of vehicles, vessels or aircraft differ between branches and between branches or departments, every Lance of the active-duty component of the FMA have standardized types of Castra containers, shown below.
Exterior Construction:
Castra.206R Containers are non-modular "strongbox" structures which begin as spaced and welded 25mm thick sheets of HY-150 steel; exterior panels are roll-formed to a strong, corrugated shape at the Halau Kalama Steel Foundry in Lomai, D'Arros Prefecture. Each panel is built up separately before being laid up together in a jig for welding. The walls of the Castra.206R container house a 40mm layer of fireproof insulation and a Faraday cage made of a braided Monel cupronickel blanket a 10mm thick fiberglass resin panel and 5mm of neoprene acoustic deadening foam. The exterior and interior of this hardened shell are coated with a 70 µm Galvannealed grey zinc oxide and then painted with a final 100 µm layer of zinc chromate mixed with a UV-stable black enamel, giving the Castra containers their characteristic dark green color.

The front of the Castra.206R Container is dominated by the container's window and personnel door. While sized identically to a cargo container, the rigid 206R is classified as a quarters container, used for command and control and barracks facilities. The 206R has a large Aluminum Oxynitride ceramic armor glass window on the left side of its front side; measuring one square meter and 40mm thick, the window conforms to UL 752 Lv. 10 and is rated against 12.7mm ammunition. The window is also explosion proof and waterproof/CBRN certified, with vibration-isolating elastomeric gaskets and a heavy, reinforced window frame providing 90 minute Forced Entry protection. An explosion-proof outdoor light is placed above the window, along with an IR light so that the container can be identified readily even in blackout conditions. The CasCon's serial number, unit identifier, container type and an identifying number for the unit to which it belongs are painted on the door, while an RFID chip is embedded in the paint between the door and window for identification and tracking.

To the right of the window is the only ingress/egress point on the container, a strong blast-protected 2-meter wide door. Utilizing a geometric fourteen-point locking system, the door is a hardened steel structure that uses 10mm chrome moly 8740 steel deadbolts to secure the door from all angles with two pins extending into the frame at the top of the door, two at the bottom of the door and five into the left and right of the door. These deadbolts are operated independently of each other but are controlled by pushrod from a spherical bearing in the center of the door; forcing one bolt will not affect the others and will not cause the opening of the lock system by pushing or applying pressure on a bolt head. The doorframe is heavily reinforced and includes an inter-locking mechanism running on sliding bearings, locking the frame into the door at eight points. A continuous steel hinge on the right side of the door uses a microfinished 20mm pivot pin for ease of opening and closing and carries 48 mounting bolts. Each bolt is a 5mm chrome moly 8740 stud, heat treated to 1,300 megapascals. Each nut uses precision ground washers and has a special 12-point star pattern to deter forced entry with common hand tools. An armored mortise lock uses a double-sided lever and double-sided locking mechanism; the high-strength locking cylinder and hardened steel hasp prevent picking, drilling or forcing the lock cylinder even with high-powered rifle fire. The door leaf itself is identical to the wall construction except that it is reinforced with transversal 40mm bars across the leaf and contains a 40mm ballistic fiberglass resin plate. Rubber door silencers in the frame and braided Monel metal gaskets seal the door on all sides. The door has been tested to 1,000 kilopascals and 1400 kpa/msec impulse; it carries a 90-minute Forced Entry protection rating and is certified to the UL 752 Lv. 10 Standard, rated for repeated fire from 12.7x108mm, 855 grain projectiles moving at 820 m/s with as much as 19,000 joules of kinetic force.

Flexible solar panel arrays on cloth backing are almost invariably used to cover most CasCons. These cloth awning-like covers provide exterior shaded space, partially obscure the containers below them and provide kilowatts of electric power for the base. Covering the containers has the added benefit of keeping the containers cooler, decreasing load on air conditioners and lowering the thermal signature of the base as a whole. The flexible panels take only minutes to unroll and stake down, meaning that setup can be accomplished quickly and easily by a minimum of personnel and simultaneously provide a large benefit to the base and the soldiers living in it.
Interior Construction:
Interior walls attach with studs and nuts directly to the smooth inner steel panel of the exterior walls. A 40mm thick layer of mold resistant acoustic dampening gypsum sheetrock covers interior walls with a 100 µm anti-mold/microbial white paint. The entire structure of the Castra.206R is fully caulked with anti-mold/microbial waterproof caulking and ceiling/floor treatments are attached with Loctite 9340 Hysol high-temperature epoxy. The floor of the 206R uses a 10mm thick layer of closed-cell foam rubber acoustic damping underlay with a 10mm layer of replaceable hard rubber 1m2 floor tiles. Electrical wiring runs through the floor, with numerous 110-Volt power connections throughout the CasCon, terminated in fault-protected, waterproof, EMP-shielded outlets. The ceilings are covered with a 40mm thick polyether semi-reticulate open cell acoustic foam and use dimming explosion-proof LED lighting. All Castra.206R containers are equipped with a high-efficiency air conditioning unit with a 50,000 BTU heater and an R134A refrigerant unit for maintenance of comfortable temperatures. A 0.05 micron positive-pressure CBRN filter and fullly-sealed construction along with one way air vents in the container maintain a CBRN-safe environment. Every container is equipped with a small backup generator for use before main generator units arrive or in case power from the field operations center's main is cut.

Inside the Castra.206R, a number of different layouts can be chosen dependent on need. Command Center CasCons have additional power outlets, battery banks and provisions for numerous televisions, computers and large-format monitors, desks and tables; Arms Room CasCons have weapons racks and ammunition storage shelves. Washroom CasCons have provisions for plumbing with ten high-efficiency toilets using compressed air assist in privacy stalls on the right side and five shower stalls on the left. At the rear of the Washroom CasCon, a pair of 500,000 BTU tankless water heaters produces 115 liters per minute at a 22° C temperature rise. At the front, five sinks with mirrors line either side of the room with the floor incorporating special textured rubber floor tiles for enhanced grip and drains every meter along both sides of the CasCon.

Power Generator CasCons have enhanced airflow, noise abatement and fireproofing measures while removing creature comforts. Electrical power is generated via five CTE-110C Turboshaft engines each spinning a 1.5 MW permanent magnet generator with filtered intakes and diffused, muffled exhaust ports to reduce heat signature. Additional insulation in these containers prevent them from creating too large a thermal signature. The rear side of the generator CasCon is replaced with a louvered intake for an air-to-water heat exchanger with a large 3 meter circulating fan, serving to both cool the intake charge for the five turbine generators and mitigate heat in the generator room with positive pressure CBRN filtered vents throughout the container. Laboratory containers employ extensive sound and dustproofing with high-volume circulation fans and air nanofiltration systems.

Laboratory CasCons use an extensive air scrubber system that precisely regulates air temperature with both heater and refrigeration units, forced air ultrasonic humidification and peltier heat pump dehumidification units, produces additional oxygen through a cold plasma ozone generator, pressure swing oxygen generator and membrane nitrogen separator, employs a negative ionic air purifier, controls odor with an activated charcoal system, utilizes a 0.03 micron CBRN filter and a final wet air scrubber system to produce cleanroom-grade atmosphere, a system considered the best in the world and the most advanced air scrubber array ever fielded. These insulated, airtight containers are kept at positive pressure with one way vents and are fully explosion-proofed on the inside, designed for use in petroleum or water testing in forward-deployed areas.

Refrigerated CasCons are plated on the inside with additional insulation and with sterile aluminum sheeting; steel and aluminum shelves are easily disassembled for cleaning and a high-power refrigerating unit can keep the entire container at -30° C. These units are entirely food safe and use a high efficiency dehumidifier to mitigate the buildup of ice on surfaces inside the "reefer" CasCon. Special aluminum floor grates with removable rubber underlay mitigate spills and maximize grip inside the refrigerated container.

Field Kitchen Containers are set up with flat-top grills and burners that can run on any kerosene-based fuel. Easily cleanable and adjustable jet nozzles allow kitchen staff to precisely adjust burners for fuels and conditions. Ergonomically laid-out food preparation stations and high-quality cookware maximize efficiency while an all stainless steel and aluminum interior modeled to minimize cleanup time and effort along with a special high-power air conditioning and circulation unit keep the RFK CasCon at a comfortable working temperature at all times. A single FK can serve 3,000 soldiers per day.

The Laundry Facility Container houses an advanced laundry processing unit with built-in test equipment to monitor the status of all motors, circuitry, water levels and temperatures. Each LF Container deploys with a 110,000 liter water tank, which is enough water to support laundry operations for a full month in the field. A single Laundry Facility Container supports operations for 8,000 soldiers, reusing and recycling the water through a reverse osmosis distillation process. Heating the water with a tankless 500,000 BTU heater improves efficiency and reduces waste. Dryer drums are heated with a working fluid and not directly by flame, eliminating kerosene fuel odors from the dried clothing.

Communications Node bunkers relay information to and from the post they are assigned to via a high-gain SANMEN amplifier and relay. Transmitting both to allied relays and to satellites, the broadband secure connection transmits both on civilian MINDI and military SANMEN network architectures. Both types of secure connections transmit at roughly 10.5 megabytes per second download speed and 5.5 megabytes upload speed. The Communications Node sets up a local MINDI tower, allowing individual users with Marquesan-market mobile devices such as laptops, cellular phones, tablets, etc. to connect to a secure, native network within 100 kilometers of the node. Data transmitted on this connection is backhauled to the Union via satellite uplink while military communications are carried on the SANMEN network to individual devices and relays, with a special command uplink from the Command & Control Bunker that synthesizes and control the data architecture for vehicles, aircraft, vessels and personnel attached to its command node.

The Barracks CasCon is the most commonly produced type, with five steel bunk beds bolted to the steel floor on the right side of the container through vibration-isolating mounts. Each bunk bed measures two meters in length, a meter in width and two meters in height, with steel support springs for each mattress. The mattresses used are 28 centimeters in thickness and utilize a gel-impregnated viscoelastic "memory" foam instead of springs. This gel foam mattress draws heat away from the body and supports the soldier's weight evenly. The removable and washable mattress cover is made from a baselayer fabric blend made from merino wool, X-Static silver fiber, cashmere and bamboo fiber. Between each bunk is a two-deck nightstand for soldier's personal affects such as electronic devices, alarm clocks, etc. The left side of the Barracks CasCon is dominated by steel locker systems. Each soldier is given a locker which stands 90cm in depth, 220cm in width and 210 cm in height, with high-strength secure doors that accommodate combination locks, steel shelves, provisions for uniform hangers and power outlets for secure charging of electronic devices. Next to the window near the door is an arms locker designed to hold the firearms and issued ammunition of the ten soldiers assigned to the Barracks CasCon.

Wastewater Treatment Containers, Reverse Osmosis Desalinization Containers and Waste Plasma Pyrolysis Containers are all specialized to their unique tasks, with special plumbing and water treatment facilities in the case of the RO and Wastewater containers. These two drastically reduce the footprint of a containerized base and allow greater flexibility in placement of the base. Because the base has the ability to treat its own seawater or even brackish and dirty groundwater, it requires fewer resupplies and can act with greater autonomy. The Waste Plasma Pyrolysis container takes solid waste both from the wastewater treatment process and also from the base itself and fires it in a Plasma Gasification Arc Reactor. Once inside the reactor, an inert gas is heated by passing it through a powerful electric arc. This gas is ionized under tremendous pressure and the superheated plasma (between 5,000 and 14,000°C) is used to form a "torch" which incinerates all combustible waste and liquefies non-combustible waste into molten slag. In interacting with the plasma, molecular bonds in the waste products are broken down and molecular disassociation occurs, transferring nearly all solid waste into a gaseous phase. The carbon monoxide gas that results from pyrolysis of waste solids (in excess of 99% conversion) is then burned in on-site turbine engines which power the plasma arc torch and provides a safe, constant auxiliary power supply for the rest of the plant. The non-combustible and chemically inert slag byproduct is completely safe to handle and is significantly smaller in volume than the waste was previously. This mineral and metal rich slag is normally the only byproduct of a Castra-container base's footprint in an area of operation. With the PGAR, there is no atmospheric off-gassing and no production of smoke or soot. Any exhaust from the facility is treated with air scrubbers to ensure a near-zero ecological impact, while cleanly destroying enormous amounts of solid waste as an alternative to the presence of landfills.

Utilizing all the insulation and armor of a normal Castra.206R with its rigid walls, the interior of the container is gutted and replaced with a cylindrical liquids tank. The 3.5x11.5m cylindrical tank holds in excess of 110,000 liters of fluids and can be set up for fuel or water as needed. These large containers are the heaviest Castra containers when shipped, but provide an efficient and safe way to transport fuel and water with the rest of the unit's equipment. The weight of water or fuel in the tanks can be as much as 110,500 kgs in addition to the container and the tank, but this method of transportation drastically reduces the amount of smaller tank-carrying vehicles that must be transported with a given unit and allows air-transportation of fuel and water by heavy-lift helicopter directly to the base in a secure container.

Modular containers are used for transportation of equipment, non-perishable foods and vehicles; they are lighter than the rigid-wall containers and contain only the corrugated steel external wall, insulation, ballistic fiberglass resin paneling and the non-corrugated interior steel wall without the sound damping or EMP shielding. Modular containers are not air conditioned and are not meant to be airtight or watertight, but the walls are removable and configurable. Interlocking modular walls make possible the creation of large indoor spaces such as dining or medical facilities; the walls can be used as a field-expedient for base defensive walls if setting up HESCO bastion walls would prove impractical. The modular CasCon is a workhorse of great utility, allowing units to move their vehicles and equipment in safety and security, while providing versatile, configurable indoor spaces once on-site. While not utilizing the armored latch doors of the rigid container, the Modular container uses standard intermodal shipping container doors on both the front and rear sides of the container, which like the walls and ceiling, can be easily removed once the container is opened with internal quick-release camlock mechanisms.
Container Transportation:
CasMAL, Modular Aluminum Pallet:
All Castra containers utilize specially designed aluminum pallets for loading and storing of equipment. Made of 70% recycled aluminum alloy, these sterile, rustproof, fireproof and waterproof pallets use a tool-less, non welded construction for ease of assembly and disassembly. The tool-less cam lock system can be put together by hand and, when assembled, has a weight rating of 22,000 kgs. With rounded edges and very light weight, the aluminum pallets are extremely user friendly and have a service life of over fifty years. Each pallet is 2,000 mm wide, 2,000mm long and 200mm in height, with the ability to be lifted from all four sides with pallet jacks. Castra pallets are designed for use with ruggedized off-road pallet jacks which can be either motorized or unmotorized, utilizing off-road treaded pneumatic tires and pneumatic shocks for ease of use over austere or unimproved terrain. A single modular Castra.206LMC container can fit 12 such pallets, yielding a high degree of utility and versatility in shipping equipment via intermodal container.

CasATT, All-Terrain Transport:
Castra Shipping Containers are designed for high mobility and ease of transport. To facilitate this, a method of mobilizing flat shipping containers and allowing them to be transportable by roll-on/roll-off vehicle ferries and across rough terrain without special accommodations had to be designed. The solution was found in designing high-capacity wheeled dollies that attach to the front and rear of each container. These dollies, using energy return wheels and aggressive off-road tread tires with heavy duty magnetorheological shock absorbers are used with a high-strength frame to lift each container and suspend it for transport. The dollies are easily detachable from their containers and stored separately, with quick, tool less cam-locks that attach or detach with a cotter pin and twist lock assembly. This dolly system is provisioned for towing in series, with a specially-developed Road Train variant of the RTH.63/10 "Typhos" Logistics Vehicle capable of towing ten CasCons fully-loaded across rough terrain and long distances quickly and efficiently.

The energy return wheel is comprised of a hub made from nitinol, a high-strength nickel-titanium alloy that is incredibly strong, lightweight and very flexible, absorbing vibrations and shocks from the road instead of transmitting them to the frame and the container. Each nitinol hub is suspended in turn by nitinol springs which hold a second nitinol hoop, isolated with a vibration-dampening membrane which devours and stores energy, returning this energy to the rolling action of the wheel. The outer hoop mounts the conventional-looking rubber tread which actually meets the road. and extends over the gap between the inner hub and outer hoop to extend traction and grip. Unlike a traditional wheel and tire, this energy return wheel does not operate under pneumatic pressure. It is significantly lighter and simultaneously much stronger than a traditional wheel and tire, is not susceptible to explosive depressurization, destruction by loss of bead, failure by puncture and the entire system is extremely damage tolerant. The ERW transmits nearly zero vibration up to the vehicle even over the roughest terrain, providing for silent, smooth operation even at high speed. This system also has the effect of de-weighting the wheel, allowing it to turn much more freely; the ERW requires less overall energy to accelerate or decelerate.

Each wheel is suspended by a pair of magnetorheological shocks developed specifically for the Arioi tactical vehicle application. Each shock uses nanometer sized iron particles suspended in an oil base with additives to prevent the particles from settling inside the shock tube. Unlike traditional suspension, these shocks have no small, delicate moving parts and are extremely simple, robust designs. The action of the fluid is controlled by a magnetic coil which, at varying levels of power, causes the iron particles in the fluid to align along the flux lines, changing the viscosity of the fluid to react to road conditions. The MR suspension system automatically adjusts once per millisecond and provides excellent ride quality, superior vibration and noise dampening, low body roll and smooth response. Each MR shock absorber takes its small amount of required power from the towing vehicle and can be ride-height adjusted either at the dolly individually or if connected to a vehicle with a towing controller, can be adjusted from inside the cabin of the towing vehicle while in motion. The heavy-duty MR shock absorbers fitted to the CasCon dolly can be adjusted up to 1,800mm of lift.

Each dolly wheel has its own regenerative braking assembly. Between the hub and the wheel, a regenerative braking system, or KERS for Kinetic Energy Recovery System connects a high-speed flywheel to the hub. A special continuously-variable transmission controls energy storage and recovery in relation to wheel speed; when the ratio is changed so as to speed up the flywheel, energy is stored and when the ratio is changed so as to slow down the flywheel, energy is recovered. The KERS flywheel is stable above 60,000 RPM and so is much smaller and lighter than previous designs. When the vehicle accelerates, the flywheel releases its stored energy, adding to the organic power of the vehicle and braking forces absorbed by the regenerative braking system recover as much of the normally wasted energy as possible. In emergency/panic stop braking, the rapid deceleration of the hub's output shafts causes the magnetic gear drive system to unlock and slip harmlessly as the vehicle comes to a stop, eliminating the possibility of driveline damage. This system is completely automatic and requires no additional input from the driver. The all-electric system can accelerate the vehicle from a stop using the KERS system alone without engaging electrical power, allowing the towing vehicle to power the container or series of containers with less overall energy than if it were trying to pull dead weight. Each KERS stores up to 60 kilowatts in either storage or recovery with 400 kilojoules of usable storage after accounting for internal power losses.

Overview:
Military units spend the majority of their time, personnel, money and resources involved in self-care, and not warfighting. It is with this in mind that the Arioi Engineering consortium has created a scalable modular field structure, which requires no change in component parts to change the constructed size, merely a change in the amount of component parts used. The structure needed to be very lightweight, it needed to be assembled without tools in austere and hostile environments and it needed to be quick to assemble, long lasting and provide effective shelter for men, materiel and vehicles both from the elements and from hostile forces. The answer to this question came from a long genesis of military buildings called Quonset huts. Quonset huts relied on a simple semicircular steel structure without internal bracing to maximize usable space while minimizing construction time or cost. These steel structures relied on welds and rivets to stay together, however, and needed to be assembled offsite and shipped to the pre-placed foundation whole, which proved impractical for forward-deployed forces, meaning that hard-shell shelters were either unavailable and had to be substituted with tents, or forces needed to be based further from the zone of combat, extending travel times and burining up logistical resources to remain active in-theater. In updating the Quonset hut, Arioi conducted extensive research trials in the field with Marquesan Army units deployed in actual combat theaters.

The study found an urgent need for a way to provide shelter from the elements and from reconnaissance aircraft and satellites in the field and to protect soldiers from extremely hostile climates. The structure needed to provide a high insulative value while being rigid, fireproof and easy to assemble on the ground by combat units in forward areas without special equipment. It needed to be a complete system and it needed to be ready to use rapidly while maintaining a low footprint. The Castra.EFS evolved from this requirement. Castra.EFS stands for Expedient Field Structure, named for ancient Roman fortifications called Castrae, which Roman legions carried with them wherever they went. This gave genesis to the idea of semi-permanent structures that would withstand the elements for extended periods of time but would be simple to set up. Four sizes are available, all of which ship in modular Castra.206M shipping containers that move with their combat units as a complete system.

Included in the Castra.EFS kit are 200-liter drums of premixed aggregate, binder and foaming resin for the quick-curing concrete foundations, tanks of compressed nitrogen and the required pump and hoses to mix and deliver cellular concrete to the foundation of the building, all the fittings, retaining hardware and spaceframe sections used to assemble the structure, rolls of ready EFS honeycomb skin and all necessary hardware to hang doors and curtain walls inside each structure. These kits, which can be scaled dependent on field commander's needs, make ideal solutions for large open structures such as medical facilities, dining halls, aircraft hangars, vehicle maintenance bays, workshops or as a covering for blocks of Castra.206 shipping containers. Requiring only manpower, water and a short span of time, Type-A structures can be assembled fully and ready to use within 24 hours, while the largest Castra.EFS kits require a week for assembly.

While Expedient Field Structures are not rated against small arms fire, the nature of their structure does offer some protection against shrapnel and ballistic penetration. The structures are fireproof and rated, even with only trench foundations, against 200 kph wind. The structures are fireproof and offer outstanding protection against corrosive salt spray, sandstorms, high snow loading, extreme cold and extreme heat. Castra.EFS is a versatile workhorse of tactical and strategic military planning; a critical asset to field commanders and a venerable, modern structure that offers orders-of-magnitude increases in safety over the tent structures it replaces, while being many many times faster to assemble and requiring a far smaller logistical footprint than even the most rudimentary of permanent structures.
Foundation:
CastraCrete is a fine pore, low-density concrete developed by Arioi for general purpose use in tactical environments. CC is extremely lightweight, at roughly 12% of the weight of conventional concrete, and remarkable for its strength and rapid hardening and curing times. CC is considered a Cellular Concrete, which innately provides shock and vibration absorption; because of its cellular nature, CastraCrete compresses during impact, increasing its resistance and absorbing kinetic energy. Its resistance to deformation and ability to absorb loads and crush in a controlled manner while reducing soil loading and adding both compressive and shear strength make it a high-value asset in challenging tactical environments. CastraCrete is porous, attenuating the passage of sound and acting as an extremely effective thermal barrier. CastraCrete is essentially fireproof and can withstand temperatures of 1,800° C nearly indefinitely. CastraCrete allows the passage of water through its pores slowly and imposes very little vertical stress on burdened soils, minimizing site disruption and reducing excavation times dramatically. CC is naturally self-leveling and fills the smallest voids, cavities and seams; when used as geofill, CastraCrete conforms to every sub-grade contour, eliminating the need to level the soil base and is significantly less susceptible to differential settlement than heavier density concrete.

Internal Structure:
The frame of the Castra.EFS has a difficult set of demands placed on it; the building's structure must be both lightweight and extremely rigid, it must be assembled in the field with a bare minimum of tools and require no special modifications to be scaled up to progressively larger and larger sizes, while being quickly put together and strong enough to support the weight of the building under high winds, heavy snow loads and combat conditions without buckling even under the most extreme of loads without internal bracing of the sometimes massive barrel vault of the arch building. To do this, an intensive study of truss and spaceframe geometry and materials was conducted.

Triangulated space frames are stess-analysis modeled by computer and assembled by plasma arc welding from 5mm thickness x 40mm diameter round tube stock of cold drawn, annealed seamless 4142 chrome moly steel. Each space frame section is tapered at its ends to a point optimized to fit into a MERO-type spherical joint. Once welding is completed, each section is annealed and completely stress-relieved before going on to a superfinishing process. Completed sections are coated with a 70 µm Galvannealed grey zinc oxide and then painted with a final 100 µm layer of zinc chromate mixed with a UV-stable black enamel, giving the sections a characteristic dark green color. This deep-penetrating, corrosion-resistant coating is a tough, hardened finish that is expected to last the life of the frame section, greater than 80 years.

Frames are assembled into a diamond pattern known as lamella architecture. The termination of each section intersects with three other sections, evenly distributing tension and compressive forces across the frame and permitting a lightweight frame to support immense spans without additional bracing. The lamella architecture is capable of withstanding 200 kph winds and massive snow loads, and can be scaled to immense size without a change in architecture. The entire structure is assembled on the ground and simply lifted into place progressively, with the center of the structure being assembled first and each progressive section being assembled on the left and right without the use of cranes or hoists. Assembly is completely tool-less, with quick disconnect fittings at every joint that snap together with hand pressure and pin lock in place. Removing the non-weight bearing cotter pin and twisting the fitting past a ball retainer disconnects the individual members for disassembly.

Each building requires only minimal foundations; for the most rapid assemblies, two trenches one meter in depth by one meter in width must be excavated at the left and right sides of the planned structure according to the desired width. The completed frame is placed into this trench and filled with fast-drying CastraCrete, cementing the frame into place. For longer-lasting buildings, a full foundation is dug to a depth of one meter, providing a hard concrete floor for the structure. Curtain walls are hung at each end, with various door options depending on the intended use of the building. The most frequent and simplest doors swing outwards and are made from doubled sections of the building's skin, with casters to facilitate easy rolling open or closed as needed. These doors can be constructed as-needed, with provisions easily made to accommodate rolling overhead doors or larger sliding hangar doors for storage of aircraft.

Exterior Composite:
The exterior skin of the Castra.EFS is a unique lightweight composite, remarkable for its strength, flexibility, lightness and rigidity to compressive force. The composite is based on a honeycomb composite, with 1cm corrugated bell-shaped cells made from nitinol alloy foil, a blend of nickel and titanium. The nitinol cells are designed to flex along their perpendicular axis but display a high degree of compression along the parallel axis of the cell walls. Even under extreme heat and compressive force, the skin retains its shape and naturally absorbs shock and vibration. The corrugated bell-shaped cells are sandwiched between two layers of 0.5mm Inconel 718 steel sheet, which is brazed together with silicon nitride ceramic powder to bond the metals together. Cells are loosely filled with Carina-1600 fireproof insulation, a blend of aluminum oxide-based corundum and mullite fibers. The extremely high-temperature ceramic is both lightweight and incredibly heat absorbent, making the skin of the structure an excellent insulator that is essentially fireproof.

The skin has an overall thickness of 40mm and is placed over the lamella space-frame of the Castra.EFS with an exterior layer and an interior layer completely enclosing the frame. This double-insulating effect with an air gap enclosing the frame creates an extremely effective insulating structure that maintains a high degree of warmth even in the coldest environments and stays cool in the hottest environments. Double-layering the skin offers a moderate degree of protection from shrapnel and ballistic penetrations, but also serves to increase the overall rigidity of the structure and makes a quiet, safe environment that is completely invisible to infrared or ultraviolet imaging, concealing whatever is inside the structure from view. The lightweight skin ships in rolls housed in modular CasCon shipping containers; each roll is two meters in width and forty meters in length. Each section has hand-tightening quick releases that lock to the next section with a quick braided steel cable-tie. Average fitment in practice leaves a 0.5mm gap between sections which interlock together on the x and y axis. The skin can be painted with any coating, but is most often coated with a protective zinc chromate mixed with UV-stable black enamel, giving the structures a characteristic olive green color.

Overview:
Castra.RTG is a system of collapsible, recoverable cellular barriers manufactured from welded zinc-aluminum coated steel wire mesh and joined with vertical, helical-coil joints. The units are lined with a heavy-duty non-woven basalt fiber geotextile. When joined and filled, the system can be used to create barriers of exceptional strength and structural integrity. Castra-system Gabions are pre-assembled and delivered palletised with joining pins, to enable the connection of individual units, which can then be filled with available material such as soil, silt or crushed rock using minimal manpower and commonly available equipment. Protection is afforded by the fill material of the structure as a consequence of its mass and physical properties joined with the durable, dynamic properties of the Gabions themselves. Once use of the Gabions is no longer required, the removal of a single joining pin opens each cell, allowing the fill material to flow free and the cell to be flat-packed and stored. The unique design, strength and versatility of the Castra.RTG design ensures rapid construction in an emergency offering significant advantages over traditional sandbags, in terms of cost, time, protective ability and labor requirement for installation. Castra.RTG is available in three configurations; individual cell, half-height individual cell and connected cell along with special construction kits. Connected cells are designed to unfold rapidly from a pre-prepared Castra.206M shipping container. After securing one end of the connected cell RTG to the ground where desired, simply towing the shipping container behind any vehicle capable of hauling it will unfold the connected cells, allowing a 1,600 meter wall to be erected in as much time as it takes to drive the distance. Once unfolded, the connected cells can be filled with construction equipment, drastically decreasing the time it takes to construct permanent barriers. This extremely versatile modular system is a force-multiplier, vastly decreasing required labor to construct walls or other structures rapidly, providing a high degree of protection against adverse weather and against explosions or attack and allowing deployed units to create secure facilities quickly and efficiently. Castra.RTG systems can be placed directly on the surface or can be dug into a half-meter deep trench to enhance resistance to floodwaters and also ramming.

Gabion Construction:
Castra Gabions are constructed from 10mm hardened steel wire which has been cold-worked and galvannealed to a thick, tough layer of zinc carbonate. The steel wire's distinguishing feature is the very tight construction of its anti-scale and anti-cutting welded mesh. The thick 10mm wire's tight construction makes it extremely difficult to get hand or footholds, while the heavy-duty tools required to cut the wire do not have enough space to operate in. The hardened steel resists breaching by saw, axe or simple torch and fencetops can be equipped with rolling steel anti-scaling barriers for a quick-to-assemble high security barrier. Each metal mesh cell is lined with a durable, fireproof basalt fiber geotextile cloth. The geotextile is a non-woven, heat bonded and needle-punched 15mm thick cloth which offers low seepage rates and which is also fireproof to 1450°C. The highly puncture-resistant and durable geotextile is extremely resistant to chemical attack, to debris or shrapnel and also resists floodwaters or ballistic penetration. Once filled with locally-sourced materials, the Castra.RTG cells are an effective protection against direct or indirect fire artillery, water up to the height of the wall, extreme winds and shaped-charge or tandem charge weapons.

Modular Construction:
Castra.RTG cells are primarily used for construction of retaining or defensive walls, however these durable, simple-to-construct units can be used for flood control, water drainage control, to create artificial piers in austere, undeveloped harbors, to create terraces or expedient bridges and elevated roadways when need be. Short lengths of individual cells or half-height cells can be created for compartmentalization of blast effects in the event of indirect fire or bombardment; long runs of connected cells can be broken apart to create entry control points as-needed. Curved walls can be created at a maximum of a one-in-four ratio. Half-height cells are frequently used as sacrificial overhead cover for hardening of Castra.206 containers against indirect fire and bombardment. Castra Guard Posts and Sangars, either elevated or ground-level are modular kits that allow rapid assembly of small emplacements with meter-thick walls and a half-meter of overhead cover. Embrasure (firing/observation point) forms are included in the set, as are roof joists and roofing material. Both elevated and ground level sangars have a base of 6x6m; the elevated sangar will provide the user with an overall height of 4m to the platform level of the structure and a stairway to platform level. The occupant is protected from both blast and ballistic threats and the kit is delivered on a single pallet weighing 800 kilograms.
