HUElavia Returns with Promising Squad to the WCoH!

HUElavia once again participates in the World Cup of Hockey, with the traditionally winter sport taking massive gains in popularity in the country due to the great success from the National Hockey Team. Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos are coming off a continuous road of success, going from Group Stage exit in WCoH 38 to Round-of-16 in WCoH 39 to the Quarter-Finals in WCoH 40. The team has grown exponentially, that HUElavia is one of the few Tropical nations in the multiverse to have a strong Hockey League along with a strong national team.

After the surprise run to the Quarter-Finals four years ago, the team now comes in ranked 13th in the Multiverse Rankings for Ice Hockey. Thus, the team was put in Pot 2 for the Final Draw. HUElavia (13) was drawn in Group B against the following teams: Poafmersia (22), Neu Engollon (2), Bleronia (UR), Graintfkall (32), and NPC West Florida (UR). The group looks fairly decent for Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos, but the games against Poafmersia and Graintfkall are "trap" games where the team will have to give it their best to stave them away. Of course, the game against Neu Engolion will be likely for the 1st Place of Group B.

Last time around, HUElavia played their Group games in Curumba. This time around, the team will play their home games around the country, much like the National Football Team does. The following stadiums will host the following teams: Arena Santos (19,250) in San Rafael will host against Graintfkall, OfficeMart Center (18,500) in Curumba will host against Poafmersia, HUElines Arena (18,500) in Sao Salvador will host against Bleronia, HUETech Center (17,500) San Franco will host against NPC West Florida and Banco da HUElavia Arena (21,000) in HUEsilia will host against Neu Engolion. It is expected for all the matches to be sold out.

Most of the squad is intact from the past few editions, but there's some new faces of the new generation of HUElavian Hockey Players looking to make a name for themselves and help hockey to continue growing in the country. Pundits and fans alike expect the team to make it to the Round-of-16 at the bare minimum. Here's to hoping and praying a good display once again from the team in another edition of the World Cup of Hockey.

FORCA HUELAVIA! VAMOS HUELAVIA! GO HUELAVIA!

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL MEN'S ICE HOCKEY TEAM

This will be Abanhfleft's nth time participating in the World Cup of Hockey. Abanhfleft is going through a bad patch of form sports-wise so no one really expects much from this team this time around. Hockey has also experienced a bit of a decline in popularity so that also means that less people would be watching the national hockey team this time around. The ice hockey craze bubble has burst, and Fleftic ice hockey fans aren't taking it too well so they'll support the team no matter what but even they aren't getting their hopes up. That's how far expectations have fallen for this team. It's kind of sad, really. And then they went to the final of WCoH 35 where they lost to Elejamie so apparently interest in hockey has been revived.

Terre Septentrionale in group D with Siovanija and Teusland and Québec

Ville Jacques-Cartier, DC - Terre Septentrionale has been drawn in group D, a group that will feature two of the greatest hockey nations: Siovanija and Teusland and Québec. Our road to the playoffs gets more harder than expected with these two hockey giants being in our group. Other teams in the group are Austrakia (not a bad team either), New Waldenesia (who was in our group last WCoH), and newcomers United Hemand Istria.

Siovanija and Teusland is without a doubt the best team in the group and will finish 1st. They're the reigning champs and 17 of their players are returning this year. Timo Schlager and Edwin Ranger are older and more experienced, and we can witness the emergence of Ranger's two linemates: Vitomir Glaskov and Aleksej Knejz. Knejz is viewed in Siovanija and Teusland as the next Razvigor Tsvetanov.

Québec still haven't released their roster, but we know that they're one of the best team in the multiverse and they usually have tough guys on their roster. They will fight with the Nordiques for the 2nd spot in the playoffs.

For the 41st WCoH, Terre Septentrionale will have a new head coach. Urszula Wieczorkowska, 43 years old, is taking over from Georges Grondin. There has been a lot of insatisfaction with Grondin, who was unable to bring the team to the playoffs for the last two WCoH. We won't content ourselves with just a participation to the playoffs, we want to win the tournament, so Grondin had to go.

Jenny Hockey is still centering the 1st line, but this time she has new linemates: 22 years old Fryderyka Krzyszczyk and Kasandra Wojcinowicz. Jenny Hockey is a good passer and a good goalscorer, she can do both. Krzyszczyk is a pure sniper and Wojcinowicz is the fastest skater on the team. The 2nd line consists of Virginie Woodbury and the Zyskowska sisters, all playing for Naprzod Krzczonow, and they have good chemistry together. Veterans Pierre Sanschagrin and Antoine Lusignan are on the 3rd line with power forward Günther Schützenauer. This is also a scoring line but they will be used as a primary shut down line when the team will be leading in the 3rd period. Players who'll can respond to Québec and Siovanija and Teusland's thoughness will be Günther Schützenauer, Elizabeth Yamamoto and Zygfryd Zurkowski. Wlodzimierz Puck could also if he's inserted in the line up.

Here is Terre Septentrionale's schedule:

MD1: Terre Septentrionale vs New Waldenesia @ Aréna Hétu
MD2: United Hemand Istria vs Terre Septentrionale
MD3: Terre Septentrionale vs Siovanija and Teusland @ Forum de Longueuil
MD4: Terre Septentrionale vs Austrakia @ Wojewódzka Hala Widowiskowo-Sportowa w Trzczeszynski
MD5: Québec vs Terre Septentrionale

MD 6: New Waldenesia vs Terre Septentrionale
MD7: Terre Septentrionale vs United Hemand Istria @ Palais des Glaces de Baie-Sainte-Catherine
MD8: Siovanija and Teusland vs Terre Septentrionale
MD9: Austrakia vs Terre Septentrionale
MD10: Terre Septentrionale vs Québec @ Forum de Longueuil

Québec and Siovanija and Teusland will play each other on matchdays 2 and 7. Every Terre Septentrionale games plus the matchups between Québec and Siovanija and Teusland will be shown live on TVSports 1.

HUElavia Open WCoH XLI with a Solid Victory!

Bleronia 1–2 HUElavia

HUElavia began the WCoH XLI on the right foot, or rather skate, as they faced off against newcomers Bleronia. The team played well, getting the opening goal early in the 1st period, when a pass by Giroux to Dominguez-Garcia allowed the captain to blast it past Stuka to make it 0-1. Then, during the 2nd period, Ilchenko gave a shot that was stopped by Stuka, only for Bourgeois to tip the puck into the goal to make it 0-2, silencing the crowd. Despite this, Bleronia attacked and attacked, going late into the 3rd period. With 10.8 seconds left, a violent shot by Bosturi went past Vasilevskiy to make it 1-2. Despite the goal, HUElavia held up for the remaining 10.8 seconds, getting a much needed win to start out the competition.

With the victory, and the draws from the other 4 teams in Group B, HUElavia leads Group B with 2 Points, compared to the others with 1 Point and 0 for Bleronia. The next match will be at NPC West Florida, where HUElavia looks to play well against them and hopefully get another favorable result. Fans will be travelling to support the team and pray for a good result. The team looks to practice well for the game.

FORCA HUELAVIA! VAMOS HUELAVIA! GO HUELAVIA!

REPUBLIC CITY --- After a somewhat-more-impressive-than-normal campaign in the Fortieth World Cup, the Gyatso-kai National Ice Hockey Team looks to return to the multi-verse stage with great success during the Forty-First Edition of the World Cup of Hockey.

The Ice Bisons are set to return to the multi-verse stage, hoping to ride the momentum of a completed AHL Season – and an unstarted Post-Season – to victory in the group stage. Last edition, the Ice Bisons went undefeated for seven straight games, losing only their first of two games to the Ibex of Neu Engollon, before restarting the winning streak up until the Semi-Finals; a determine Valanoran team kept the game tight, ending the Ice Bisons’ chances at a second World Cup trophy on an overtime game at 1-nil. Of course, the Ice Bisons would go on to win the Third Place Game in overtime against Savojarna, 6-5.

”We had already proven so much in the short span of the tournament. We had wanted to finish it, take home the top trophy, bring glory back to the Republics… but it just wasn’t in the stars.”

Kobushi Kaede, Forward, Gyatso-kai National Team

In what has been termed the ‘Omashu Experiment’, Head Coach Hakoda Ishii has brought back the entire team from World Cup of Hockey XL to compete in the Forty-First Edition; of course, that means the return of Shu Pianhuo between the pipes. He had another impressive year in Omashu, with the Badgermoles finishing fifth after a very rough start that saw them in the Lower Five at the midway point.

”We certainly were struggling. However, with hard work and determination, the team was able to gel in the second half of the year and claw our way… literally… out of the bottom and into the Playoffs. I’m only hoping that we are able to do the same here.”

Shu Pianhup, Goaltender, Omashu Badgermoles and The National Team

Some other returning faces that the fans will be excited to see include “The Mandalorian Shield” Hed Torvik, who during the 2020.3 AHL Season suffered an upper body strain that took him out of the first 30 matchdays. Many thought that he would not be able to join the National Team, and there were reports out of training camps that – even with Torvik on the Ice Bisons and skating – Jaster Kal’oki was taking turns practicing on the first line with Watang Kouji, suggesting a possible replacement on the first line. Also returning to the team is our Captain, Song Unataq, who at 34-years-of-age, is the third-oldest player on the team; a seasoned veteran who has yet to led his team to the ultimate victory. A surprise for some is the return of Hiteki Kia, who many felt that at 40 should be well into the twilight of his career. When interviewed on “CENTRE ICE” earlier this week, Hiteki had the following to say on the topic of his age:

”Yes, I am 40-years-old, and have been playing hockey at some level for thirty-two of them. If I thought my age was a concern, or that my play style was not up to speed, I would be the first to call myself out. But trust me… I won 50 yuans from Killer (Kil’or Ale’cyc) for outskating him today and boarded Naka (Ero’ki Nacer) pretty good and I skated off just fine.”

Hiteki Kia, Defenceman, Gyatso-kai National Team

So he’s old, he’s strong, and we can be certain the man is hungry for some victories.

Let’s hope the rest of the team is just as hungry…

As has become expected, GyatsoAir --- in partnership with the AHL and the National Sports Council --- have promised to offer reduced-pricing on airline tickets to The Wintery Iceland of Taeshan, should the Ice Bisons advance out of the Group Stage. For the Round Robin, tickets to and from Gyatso-kai will be discounted for travelling fans. Also, each game the Ice Bisons play in shall be aired on the entire ASPN family of networks (ASPN Prime, ASPN2, AVS, ASPN3, UASPN): All other games shall air on the World Sports Nation and World Sports Nation PLUS, which are being made available on all television and internet-provider services at NO COST from now until the conclusion of the World Cup of Hockey.

After a successful run in WCoH XL, Shu Pianhuo[/i] returns to his place between the pipes; jumping over the two perennial backups for the National Team – Ming Zhanshi and Dang Mun-Hee – and securing his place in net. A younger goalie, who managed to win his first Kuruk Cup within his first three seasons at Omashu. Shu has proven his family proud, developing into a fine starting goalie whose style continues to evolve over time.

The defensive pair for the first line also saw a big change last tournament, as the 25-year-old [b]Watang Kouji
is now being paired with Hed Torvik. A defensive line with over 200 kilos is somewhat of an Avatarian tradition, however, with Kuang Deniigi being sent down to the second line, the youthful vigor behind such weight cannot be matched. Watang, out of the Fire Nation, is known for powerful forechecks and his insane speed on the backskate; while Hed, otherwise known as the “Mandalorian Shield”, is just as impressive at generating offence as he is pushing another player into the boards.

The forward line, albeit a bit old, was shaken last World Cup a bit with the removal of Nestori Huan from center, and bring Hosaka Severi up from the second line; while Hosaka’s style of play is more fitting for a second line, Head Coach Ishii believes that his blinding speed on the ice would greatly assist the wings’ and their passing ability. Cheung Sepi, of Kelita fame, found himself on the left side, where his impressive hockey vision and passing ability paired well with the strong bodied and defensively-minded play style of team captain Song Unataq.

However, after both the Thirty-Ninth World Cup and the Atlantian Oceanian tournament, it was clear that Cheung was not bringing to the line what was needed most. Ishii has moved Cheung back to the second line and brought up Kobushi Kaede from the third line. An impressive left-winger from Omashu – who managed a hat-trick in the tournament-winning game against Seelowe Marlesee of Siovanija and Teusland which saw the Badgermoles victorious with NINE goals against Marlesee’s five – he had been playing center for the last three tournaments. Given such a strong performance with Omashu, Head Coach Ishii deemed it only fair to put him into a position he is well versed in.

It worked out well last year… so let’s see if it continues to improve us.

With Hiteki Kia having 78 caps on the Ice Bisons under his belt, he is the most seasoned player on the team, and rightfully wears the first A. Renowned for his ability as "damage control" through the last three World Cups he played in, Hiteki has continued to do just that with Hed Torvik. However, with Hed being moved up to the first line, the even-more youthful Ero’ki Nacer finds himself beneath the wings of “Sifu Hiteki” as many of the younger players respectfully refer to him as such. Nacer, who graduated right out of Hatsu University to sign an entry-level contract with the Badgermoles, found his number being called in the final games of the 2020.2 Regular Season, when last season’s first pick Hu Jiaozi was taken out of the season with a bad trip that saw him slide skate-first into the boards and break his tibia in two places. With an impressive season in the Republic Hockey League underway with the Humoki Huangdogs, he made the transition to AHL-level play with ease, and scored his first AHL goal against the Itakawai Lightning in Game One of the Finals.

On offense, Wang Torsti from Si Wong finds himself on the left side of the ice, and after an early playoff exit for the Beetles in a seven-game series against the Keldabe Strills, Wang may just be looking to show his worth as his contract is set to expire in 2020.3. Opposite him we find Cheung Sepi who has continued to carve his name in the banks of the Kelita River. Even though he has been moved from the first line, Cheung is not taking it as an insult, and instead, viewing it as a chance to sharpen his own skills on the off-handed plays. In the middle, another once-first-liner Nestori Huan finds his return to the line better known for damage control rather than scoring. However, with his impressive knowledge and vision that had earned him his spot on the first line last World Cup, Huan may very well prove his doubters wrong and bring some glory to the second line.

With Ki'an Losow, who was last seen on the National Team's Travelling Corps back in WCoH XXVI, serving as the veteran pillar of the third line, you can be sure that this line is the true "clean-up crew" of the Ice Bisons. A strong defenceman who once played solely on offense, Losow has no fear in leaving his zone and pushing in for a quick goal from one of the most unlikely players. Sure, his form is a bit on the unrefined side of the spectrum, but for what he lacks in technical mastery, he makes up in the psychological.

Pairing with Losow is former-first-liner Kuang Deniigi who, at 38-years-of-age, is not long for the multi-verse stage. In what many are expecting to be one of his final seasons, Kuang has been sent to the lower lines to better shape younger players as they work their way through the ranks. His defensive skills are still impressive for his age, though you are certain to see that they are nowhere near as sharp as they were back in WCoH XXIV when Kuang made his official debut on the team after coming in a couple of games in WCoH XXIII to help the Ice Bisons bring home the World Cup. Ironically, where he started his multi-verse career is likely where he will end it as well; a staple of the third line.

Offensively, the third line is filled with strong passers and even stronger shooters. Both Relicyc Tho-An and Souma Shichiro have done amazingly well in skills competitions involving accuracy and shot speeds; both players are younger and wanting to make a name for themselves. However, what is unique on the third line is the arrival of Kil’or Alecyc, an impressive power forward who saw his name behind many a goals in both previous tournaments as well as in the Lightning’s defeat in the Kuruk Cup Finals. Given the emphasis that Coach Ishii has put on slotting Badgermole players into prime spots, someone like Kil’or – a second-line Lightning player who has been with the team since their return – was bound to find himself in the lower lines. However, ever the professional, Kil’or has enjoyed player with Relicyc, a teammate and good friend of his in Itakawai, and the two of them have been working with Souma to fully connect the offense on the third line… Do not be surprised if you start seeing goals being made from this far back in the depth chart.

The Sundari Times Forum is a larger-than-average arena in in the Southern Mandalorian Territories; seating just under 20,000 fans, the nine-time Kuruk Cup Champions are certainly a show of force within the League and their fans are known as the most compassionate and dedicated fans in the entire league. Considering the fact that this team was just denied their tenth Kuruk Cup in the last season, you can expect to see quite a few rambunchous fans in the stands to egg on any of the Omashu players who have made the National Team roster.

The Capital Centre is a more modest arena when compared to the other arenas in the division, seating just under 21,000 fans in the most posh of settings. Home to the Republic Capitals an incredibly wealthy team in which many of the most dedicated fans are served fresh caviar and fed sparkling wine through guilded funnels, the Capital Centre reflects this opulence in its design.

Home to the Southern PolarLeopards, the Tribal Saddledome --- much like the Ice Palace of the BuffaloYaks --- seats 28,350 dedicated fans in what is arguably the most comfortable arena in the far southern isles. Though the PolarLeopards have not enjoyed much success in recent years, their fans are just as devoted as those across the bay in Itakawai, if not more so… given that their devotion has yet to be paid for with a Kuruk Cup or even a postseason run...

Corrupt Dictatorship

Postby Ko-oren » Thu Nov 12, 2020 4:21 am

The forces behind professional sports in Ko-oren are willing to renegotiate the status of ice hockey on the archipelago, says Aemile Esmerona, head of the Ko-orenite ice hockey association, KIHA. "We want to protect our players and give them a better livelihood. On a personal note, I do not want a repeat as with two recent transfers," the chairman said, refering to the sale of two players to Donnaconan clubs. On arrival, they found little was organised to accommodate the duo, and ultimately neither ended up playing a single match in the league.

Professionalisation for the country's top twelve ice hockey clubs has been a talking point for at least a decade now, leading to fierce division within the sport (with only a slight majority of club managers supporting professionalisation) and outside of it (with especially the KGFL, the gridiron football assocation, fearing competition for talent in the northeast). The chairman of the KGFL had this to say in earlier rounds of discussions: "Obviously, I support a good climate for professional sports in Ko-oren, conducive to good results in national and international tournaments, an inclusive and healthy supporter base. However, we should also look at the competitiveness of ice hockey clubs compared to the existing professional leagues. I think we have a way to go before we can make sure these clubs can survive in a much more competitive environment."

The reason why the KGFL chairman is critical of Esmerona's mission, is that gridiron football gets a significant portion of its viewerbase, supporters, and players from the northeast. Those players might otherwise consider ice hockey as a viable career. This is less of a problem for association football, and no problem at all for the other sports; rugby league, rugby union, cricket, and baseball.

That said, even within the sport, not everybody agrees with Esmerona's vision for twelve professional teams, supported by one or two minor leagues to feed talent into the top level. Many teams are located in the city of Aevanna, who know that a city that small cannot support four or five teams in a top flight competition - so either teams fold, merge, or drop off to the minor leagues, which in turn means that historical derbies and rivalries will disappear. Clubs outside of Aevanna already have a larger part of their budget reserved for travelling and wouldn't mind seeing financially strong clubs outside of the city.

The Banijan league has already moved into the vacuum by launching a team in Schemerdrecht, the largest city of the northern region, pre-empting Esmerona's ice hockey league.

With no end in sight, the debate rages on, but it's clear that Donnacona's snatching of two players and subsequently leaving them in the dark, and Banija's swift launch could be a deciding new chapter to the story.

Transvolcanic wins in a thrilling match against TJUN-ia
The Volkansfort Intercultural Center, or VIC for short, received in the hockey arena the first ever official hockey match for the Transvolcanic federation, and it was against (25) TJUN-ia, everyone would expect a great humiliation, but, surprisingly Transvolcanic won 4-3:
During the first period, Ileana Cháves opened the counter just at the 15 seconds with a prepared play, but TJUN-ia did answer, Julian Visipils tied it just 7 seconds later, and as there are still 3 minutes, 14 seconds, Christian Kalsters made a small comeback to 1-2, at 3 seconds for the end of the first period, Julian Visipils shot atrongly and precisely, making it to 1-3
Seems the first line was a bit inefficient, so Luke Harrison and Mavis LeQuamec had to take action, during the second period, Luke Harrison cleaned their defense, and another point, 2-3, but LeQuamec, after a great service from Thijt, did shot great and scored even after falling by accident, but that falling did cause her a small injury on her knee, so she will probably be out for 1 week or in the worst cases, 3 weeks
As the match was tied 3-3, the small arena was feeling like it was a World Cup, LeQuamec had to be substituted for Ferdinand Müllhaus and Ileana Cháves for Riika Viinänen
During the third Ryan Pericic, who recently entered, for Teemu Pukaninen, suffered a small injury after having disputed the "puck" with Thijt, it could be a small injury of only 3 days, or in the worst, only 1 week
Only 15.6 seconds for the end, and Ferdinand Müllhaus made it! 4-3 and a comeback on a tense match

Rebels Without a Cause: The RHL

Part I - Born in a Boiler Room

”Rebels Without a Cause” is Hockey Today’s look back on the brief, crazy history of the Republic Hockey League, which attempted to compete with the Ehrenliga back in the 1970s. Known for shady characters, physical hockey and losing money, Hockey Today is eager to take readers back through the history of this league.

In a press box at the Stelburg Eispalast on the evening of February 13, 1968, three men met that would change hockey in Siovanija & Teusland forever. The occasion? It was Hockey Night in Siovanija & Teusland, with the classic rivalry playing out on the ice below - the Stelburg Kaisers and Olympia Borograd, for first place in the league. This was the first season after the Ehrenliga had expanded from 6 teams to 12 - but the old guard were still in control.

There’s a picture of the meeting of the three men that still hangs in that very box. On the right, Ivo Kubat, who had drove all the way from Borograd to watch the game. In the middle, with a smile from ear to ear, Marius Poge - the host of the evening, who had organized the box. And on the left, standing a bit taller than the other two and with no smile at all, Arno Klengel. Who were these men? And why were they here?

Ivo Kubat, from Borograd, was a very, very successful businessman, who operated a variety of factories in the greater Borograd area. He’d made his fortune, alright - but had made plenty of enemies along the way. There were accusations that some of his money was tied up in the various black market activities going on in the city of Pomorie/Marzig, where a great deal of the local economy was tied up in nationalist paramilitary groups. One of Kubat’s business partners had died just 3 months before the meeting, with rumours of foul play.

Arno Klengel was a hard man - the owner of the Klengel Steel Company, one of the largest in Teusland and the biggest employer in the city of Stahlberg. He’d grown up in the mountains, in the mines - and everything about him told you that. The reason he wasn’t smiling in the picture was because, simply, he didn’t feel like it. Those who knew Arno knew that he never felt like it - at Klengel Steel, it was often joked about amongst employees that no-one had ever heard the boss laugh. Still, he had a warm heart - years later, it would be revealed that he’d provided equipment to the Stelburg Children’s Hospital during its construction free of charge, and was one of the largest anonymous charity contributors in the entire nation.

And in the middle was Marius Poge. Born in Stelburg, he’d moved away to St. Jakob at a young age and tried to become the king of the TAX - a stock broker. After just a few years, however, he realized that there was a quicker way to make money. He left his previous firm and founded Poge-Kaiser alongside a friend. Poge-Kaiser, however, was a boiler room - selling penny stocks with dishonest business practices over the phone. Poge made millions, quick. He was one of the biggest brokers in St. Jakob’s financial district - and ran an excellent PR operation to convince people he was a legitimate businessman. He quickly became a large figure in the upper-class scene in Teusland.

Poge owned season tickets for his hometown Stelburg Kaisers, but knew that on this night his guests needed a bit of a higher-class experience. So, he rented out the biggest box in the old Eispalast, and pulled out all the stops regarding catering for the evening. His guests, their wives and children, were treated to a dinner at one of Stelburg’s trendiest restaurants before the game. Poge clearly felt he needed to get these men on his good side. But what could be so important?

The 1967-68 season of the Ehrenliga was its 49th, and also a massive game-changing moment. ‘Expansion’ had been the word on everyone involved with the league’s lips for years, and finally it had taken place. 6 new clubs had been admitted to the top flight, with teams like Seelowe Marlesee, the Felsenkirchen Jets, Orlovi Stavropol, Rudar Trkev, the Vrnovo Islanders and the Kaiserhaven Knights making their debuts here. While each of these clubs would eventually carve out a history of their own, they were still just beginning here. And in those six cities across the country, there was great hope - they were now major-league cities, with professional hockey of their own.

Expansion had left a bitter taste in the mouths of many cities across the country, however. Siovanija & Teusland is a country known for its religious-like obsession with the game of hockey. 6 cities were added to the league, but countless more were left out. Cities like Stahlberg, where Arno Klengel had led the bid to bring an expansion team. Cities like Pomorie, where Ivo Kubac had led a bid of his own for an Ehrenliga team. In some cities, civic campaigns had created ‘Boycott the Ehrenliga’ movements, encouraging fans to instead follow local junior or senior amateur teams. Marius Poge was a hockey fan - and also a businessman who saw potential.

At some point during a 6-4 win for the Stelburg Kaisers on that cold February evening, Marius Poge turned the conversation to the possibility of establishing a league that could compete with the Ehrenliga. His two guests were at first dismissive of the idea. “Is there enough players to make that work?” asked Klengel. Poge assured his guests that, given there were 30 major junior teams in the country, 44 minor pro teams, and countless senior teams in every town, there were more than enough skilled players who couldn’t find a job in the Ehrenliga at the moment.

“I remember him telling us that it would be small at first, maybe 6 to 10 teams, but he had visions that one day it could get up to 30,” said Ivo Kubac in an interview many years later. “I think what intrigued me was his determination - you could tell he felt this would work, he just needed us on board. Now that I think about it, of course he convinced us, he was a conman at heart.”

The two men with Poge had countless questions for him - what cities? How would their investment be protected if things went south? Was this legal? Would there be fans? Poge had thought of all these and more, however, and was able to give confident answers that satisfied Kubac and Klengel. Kubac was the first to declare himself on board, after which he was able to convince Klengel shortly after.

On a napkin in that box, Pogel took out a pen and wrote down the names of 8 cities that had arenas and could host a team, as well as potential owners. Stahlberg and Pomorie were on the list - Kubac and Klengel getting their teams at last. St. Jakob was there too - Pogel was going to run a team as well, and his would be competing directly with one of the Ehrenliga’s giants, the St. Jakob Saints. Other cities on the list included Ternau, Bukovets, Rotmunde, Teufelsberg and Vlaikograd. Pogel, Kubac and Klengel each knew people that could be potential owners, and each promised to give them a call. Pogel kept the napkin in his pocket - it would later go into the National Hockey Hall of Fame.

The morning after, the headline in the Stelburger Zeitung read “Kaisers show first-place credentials, defeat old rivals Olympia 6-4”. Nowhere was it mentioned the meeting that had taken place at that game that would shape the next decade of hockey in Siovanija & Teusland. That was perfectly fine for its participants, though. “Marius had told us not to say anything to anyone about this, he wanted to control the marketing when it came time,” said Kubac. Did either of the two initial partners think it would work out? “Frankly, no,” said Arno Klengel. Ivo Kubac was a bit more optimistic: “I had no illusions that it would be an instant success. But I did think there was definitely a market for it, and that we could put something together to fill that need.”

Either way, February 13, 1968, would mark an important moment in the history of hockey in this country. The birth, at least on paper, of the Republic Hockey League.

Puck Watch: The VIC Hosts The Ice Jags

Postby TJUN-ia » Thu Nov 12, 2020 10:22 am

TJUN-ia's 3rd WCoH began with a trip to the Volkansfort Intercultural Centre and their Hockey Centre for the first home game for unranked Transvolcanic. It would be a historic day no matter the scoreline, but Ølson Rasmussen knew he couldn't just let La Azulrojiza win this game. The Ice-Jags were the 25th ranked team in all of hockey and certainly had aspirations of making the playoffs for the first time this time around. The IHT was hoping for that too and if that didn't happen, questions would have to be answered about Rasmussen's ability as Head Coach. So Opening Day was taken seriously by the Ice-Jags as they prepared to start the long road to somewhere.

For its first-ever international game, the VIC would witness an icebreaker classic. It started fast from the off, with Ileana Cháves going down in the history books with her nation's first goal after only 15 seconds. TJUN-ia responded quicker, Julian Visipils firing the puck past Henry Norbin just 7 seconds after Cháves. The game was 1-1 after only 22 seconds - that should tell you all you need to know about this game. The rest of the first period, however, was all Ice-Jags with Kalsters making it 2-1 and Visipils getting his second to make it 3-1 after a third of the game.

But momentum would swing in the 2nd thanks to the efforts of two people from the 2nd line of Los Rebeldes: Luke Harrison and Mavis LeQuamec. Harrison would score Transvolcanic's 2nd, a nice shot past Jakob Vaduz, and you could feel the crowd start to believe in their team from the benches. Chaos would descend before the end as a nice pass from Thijt Van Der Ossen found its way to LeQuamec, who injured herself in the act of scoring the tieing goal. She had given her body for her homeland and that is something that even the opposition can take inspiration from.

The 3rd was an absolute nightmare to play and to watch, the 3,500 in attendance with their collective hearts in their throats. Ryan Pericic had a bit of a bad fall and so had to leave the ice to check up on his condition. Later it would turn out he collected a large bruise and would have to rehabilitate before the next game in New Washington, but that was the least of TJUN-ia's concerns. With only a few seconds left it looked as if both teams would take a point from the entertaining game, but a final twist was to come. Ferdinand Müllhaus found a way to get the puck in the net with 15 seconds on the clock. The VIC descended into pandemonium as Los Rebeldes had completed their comeback. Those final seconds were painful but they got the job done, to Rasmussen's sheer disbelief.

TJUN-ia had shown potential in this game, but the opposition wanted it more and they certainly got their way. Now we have to move on and hope we can have better moments on this long campaign. The first game at The Rink in The Gardens is up next as the Jaguars host another unranked nation, this time Tjorl. GO JAGS!

Hockey in Savojarna

Savojarna plays a game that is mostly depending on tactical discipline and puck possession. While the Savojars do value a good deflection or rebound goal, and certainly have many players who can do such things, they usually prefer a pass to a shot from a desperate position hoping for a lucky bounce. Their players think fast rather than move exceptionally fast (but they are not slow either!), with a few exceptions on the attack since the coaching changed and the team is a bit more aggressive. While they don't have to hide from anyone, they are usually not physically superior.

In terms of tactics, they play an aggressive forechecking with one or two men, trying to force puck losses, and drop back to their own blue line once the opponent has reached the neutral zone. They attempt to keep the opponent away from their own side, and defend usually quite solid. On the attack, Savojarna's top lines work with a lot of passing and cycling the puck to find an open lane while the third and fourth line play deeper and with more drive to the net. Especially the fourth line often crowds the slot, while the third is more likely to go deep and play behind the net. Usually, the Savojars play with 13 forwards and 7 defenders. On the men's team, Glukov can be expected to barely play outside special teams.

The Savojar team plays a powerplay focused mainly on shooting from the point and the circle. The two defenders play both in the area between the blue line and the top of the circle, but occasionally advance to the circle. The winger on the side of the puck moves to the circle to be open and get a shot off, the other winger moves towards the goal to assist the center in screening and opening shooting lanes. The center remains in front of the goal. In penalty killing, Savojarna lets the opponent play around the boards, but intervenes quickly if the puck moves inside the box. They play a PK with relatively little pressure.

Special Teams:
PP1: Falborg - Gulbrandsson - Gränlund - Andersson - Bryzhnev
PP2: Anjushkin - Kristiansen - Kasajev - Hejman - Jaskinen
PK1: Asgeirsson - Falborg - Andersson - Jaskinen
PK2: Ingerman - Nordrsson - Elyagin - Gränlund

Players

Goalkeepers: Nick Hoyman is the main goalie of Savojarna. He is an athletic and quite spectacular butterfly goalkeeper who is very hard to beat off the first shot, but gives up a lot of rebounds. Obviously he got quite some practice in defending against them as a consequence, but facing against teams who shoot the puck a lot he is bound to give up some goals. Kerjanen is a very different type and considered Hoyman’s equal. He is more stationary and relies a lot on his insane skills of reading play and knowing what to expect from an opponent. He and Hoyman will alternate group stage games, and Kerjanen may also play a KO game (this is indicated in RP if it happens). Sundholm was the starter of the last WJHC tournament and is given some experience on the top level, but unlikely to play.

Defencemen
Following the retirement from international play of Alexey Yarchenko, Kristiansen has inherited the task of organising defence as well as the role as Savojarna’s leader. He has great spatial awareness and good passing skills, but is a bit limited in physical play (by Savojar standards) and doesn’t have the shot expected by an OFD. Asgeirsson is a shutdown defender whose speciality is to relentlessly attack the opponent’s key players in the defensive zone and wear them down with hard checks. The second pairing has probably the most offensive firepower. Falborg is a pinching defenceman who has high speed and stamina, and is very good at keeping the blue line. His linemate Mikael Ingerman is considered to have the hardest shot in the SHS, but is often considered a bit lacking in judgment. Due to his overall conservative disposition, that rather means overly safe play than giving up chances, so the risks are limited. Troels is a hard-working player who will run after every puck and secure the blue line, as well as having a decent shot, whereas Nordrsson is a player whose main strength is to construct and guide the game with the puck. Defensively, he is limited, explaining his third line status. Anjushkin is a skilled defender with a very precise shot and a good eye for passes or pinching opportunities. Lajanen is a solid allrounder with some lack of experience internationally, and will be used against offensive top teams to stabilise the defence.

Centres
Malinsson will be distributing pucks left and right, but is somewhat lacking - again, to Savojar standards - in physicality and will suffer against very strong opposition that drive them away from the goal. Consequentially, he will mostly drift wide a bit and try to find open wingers at the posts. Kasajev was one of the stars of the last WJHC, and plays a very flashy, fast, and passing-oriented game. He works splendidly with his linemate and close friend Aljekhin. Hejman is the only centre who mainly scores goals. He is a relentless sniper who often lurks at the hashmarks to find some space to drive to the goal, receive a pass and deflect or score. Andersson is another regular scorer, but thrives more off deflections and assists due to his hulking presence. He is also a very enduring player thanks to his time in the Mercedinian league. Finally, Hjalmarsson is a more physical playmaker who will be mostly used as a backup or an occasional 13th forward for the powerplay.

Wingers
Brzyhnev and Gulbrandsson are also similar to each other. They are fast players, and especially in the case of Gulbrandsson, dazzling technicians. Expect them to show glamourous plays on the counter and score a few breakaways. Both are considered to have barely any defensive responsibilities to allow their skills to shine. Aljekhin is a bit of a younger version of the duo, a flashy technician, but with a less prominent physique, measuring a mere 177 cm. Elegin is an extremely hard and precise shooter, who is great at utilising the passes from the centre. He is very fast on the first metres, but somewhat lacking on long, fast runs. Physical presence often allows them to anchor themselves at the post and wait for a pass. Gränlund is a player who thrives on the boards and in the corner, hard to drive away or separate from the puck, and good at pinching in to secure a rebound. His linemate Jaskinen is comparable to Elegin, but notably slower and stronger, lurking at the post rather than accelerating in from the side. Taranin is a sharpshooter operating from the side, bringing the puck to the net whenever he can, and hoping for goalies to miss it or for his linemate Elyagin to drive in and push it over the line. Dragunov is the more defensively oriented version of Elyagin, to be used more often when a lead must be defended.

What the heck?

Yamaska, Haute-Yamaska - Terre Septentrionale and New Waldensia were in the same group for the WCoH 40 and the Patriotes beat them 6-2 and 7-4. We would expect the same result since our roster didn't change much but we lost 2-1. We just scored one goal. What the heck? Caspian Estes scored for New Waldensia in the 1st period. Then they increased their lead in the 2nd period when veteran player Bob Sampson scored. Fryderyka Krzyszczyk scored a goal on a two on one with Jenny Hockey with 5 minutes remaining in the 2nd period to cut New Waldensia's lead to 2-1. Terre Septentrionale shot 17 times in the 3nd period, trying to tie the game but Jarvis Dunlap denied them all. The final result was a 2-1 loss.

Group D

Every hockey expert in Terre Septentrionale will agree the Reprezentacja Nordycki is a top 10 hockey team even if we're currently 18th in the rankings. Losing against a team who won 1 and lost 8 at the last World Cup is unacceptable. On another hand, New Waldensia have improved since we faced them twice last year. Québec also disappointed with a draw against Austrakia on matchday 1 while Siovanija and Teusland beat United Hemand Istria 4-0. On matchday 2, Terre Septentrionale will play on the road against United Hemand Istria while Québec and Siovanija and Teusland will play each other. The line up will be the same against UHI.

Top 6 teams in the LSH

Ville Jacques-Cartier, DC - The 2027-28 Ligue Septentrionale de Hockey (LSH) season is ongoing, here's the Top 6 LSH teams for 2027-28.

1. Yamaska Swamp Rabbits:

Offense: 11th
Defense: 1st
Overall: 1st

The Yamaska Swamp Rabbits have won 3 Stanislawski Cups in a row and we can call them a dynasty. They're a team who can win a lot of games by a score of 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1. They have by far the best defense in the league with goalkeeper Nico Eggenberger (1st overall pick in 2020), defensemen Kévin Beauregard (1st overall pick in 2019), Zoran Osmancevic, Przemyslaw Kotarzewski, and defensewoman Kendall Gillies (9th overall pick in 2022). Offensively They aren't bad with Jenny Hockey (1st overall pick in 2021) centering the top line with Szandi Balizs and Émile Sansoucy.

2. Naprzod Krzczonow:

Offense: 1st
Defense: 3rd
Overall 2nd

Naprzod Krzczonow won 4 Stanislawski Cups between 2020 and 2024 and they lost the 3 last Stanislawski Cup finals to the Yamaska Swamp Rabbits. The 1st line consisfs of Virginie Woodbury and the Zyskowska twins: Emilia and Melania, and is considered to be the best line in the league. The top defense pairing is Krzysztof Klepczynski on the right and Czeslaw Szerszenowicz on the left. Natalia Mroczkowska is in the net. the bad thing about this team is that they're all 29 years old and over.

3. Port O'Connor IceHogs:

Offense: 4th
Defense: 4th
Overall: 3rd

The IceHogs are the best of the rest. Offensively, the leam is led by Peter Szczesny, Kasandra Wojcinowicz (2nd overall pick in 2019) and Zuzanna Skrynkowicz. Defensively, goalkeeper Mackenzie Mittelstadt (9th overall pick in 2021) and defensewomen and men Joanna Katarzynska-Goj (2nd overall pick in 2020) and Wlodzimierz Wawrzynkiewicz are their best players.

4. Éperviers noirs de Prévost

Offense: 2nd
Defense: 5th
Overall: 4th

The Éperviers noirs (Black Hawks in English) have one of the best offense in the league and they're led by Tyler O'Rourke (3rd overall pick in 2022), Frédérique Lainé and Przemyslaw Szczechowicz or Jennifer McKernan on the 1st line, Jessica Chevrefils-Hansen (2nd overall pick in 2022) and Haley Duggan (4th overall pick in 2023) on defense and Hunter Castleman (7th overall pick in 2020) between the pipes.

5. Éclairs de Baie-Sainte-Catherine:

Offense: 3rd
Defense: 6th
Overall: 5th

The Éclairs are a relatively young team. Offensively, the best players are Tommy Cholette, Zygfryd Zurkowski (1st overall pick in 2022) and Günther Schützenauer (3rd overall pick in 2020).Their defense, which isn't the best but they're still good, consists of Wladyslaw Hanuszkiewicz-Stepowski (3rd overall pick in 2023) and Hugo Croisetière along with goalkeeper Émile Valiquette (6th overall pick in 2021).

6. Kukljica Grizzlies:

Offense: 14th
Defense: 2nd
Overall: 6th

Similar to the Yamaska Swamp Rabbits, the Grizzlies aren't that good offensively but they have a very strong defense. Their offensive leaders are Karolina Strzyzowska (6th overall pick in 2020), Walter McManus (6th overall pick in 2019) and Gus Kirkpatrick (8th overall pick in 2022). Their defensive leaders are Elizabeth Yamamoto (3rd overall pick in 2021), Keaton Brind'Amour (3rd overall pick in 2019) and goalkeeper Jennifer Ciccarelli, who signed with the Grizzlies as a free agent around 2024.

    Ice Wolves celebrate shutout

The small band of Ice Wolf Pack fans who travelled to the Golden Cross Arena in Albertville, Neu Engollon, came home satisfied despite a distinct – in fact, total – lack of goals on the ice. Tom Finngeirsson saved 38 shots as the Ice Wolves held the current world #2 side at bay. Bjarnleifur Asgeirsson came closest to scoring for the Ice Wolves, his vicious slap shot saved almost balletically by Calvino Bassati as the second period got off to a fast start, but in general the Ice Wolves – outshot by fully 20 shots on goal – struggled to get much offence going. With Finngeirsson catching flies at the other end, that didn’t matter too much. Guðmann Svanbergursson will miss the rest of the tournament after cracking his wrist during a ferocious board battle with Von Roessler.

HUElavia Storms Through West Floridians in a Great Victory!

NPC West Florida 0–3 HUElavia

HUElavia came into Matchday 2 looking to build up on their opening victory for Matchday 1. They traveled once again to a different country, this time to West Florida. The match was a solid performance all around, with HUElavia getting a goal in each period. The 1st Period saw the opening goal halfway through the period, when Carmo took the puck around the goal and slid it past REDACTED to make it 0-1. In the 2nd Period, a shot from the blue line during a counter attack from Dominguez-Garcia went past REDACTED, who didn't move to make it 0-2. In the 3rd Period, with 38 seconds left in the game, West Florida was attacking, looking to cut the deficit, when REDACTED lost the puck and Petit got it to slide it into the empty net, making it the definitive 0-3. It was also noted that Caetano had a great debut, getting a clean sheet for the match, getting congratulations from his teammates.

HUElavia maintains 1st Place with the Victory, having 4 Points and a record of 2-0-0. The next match will be at home for this first time this competition, as the team play against Graintfkall, who comes off a 1-0 victory over Bleronia and currently sit in 3rd Place with 3 Points (1-1-0). The match will be played at Arena Santos (19,250) in San Rafael. It is expected for a sold-out crowd to be present at the arena, in what is the first ever International Match for the Hockey Team in San Rafael. The team will train hard and well to prepare for the historic match. Fans will be hoping and praying for a favorable result in the opening home game for the team in WCoH XLI. Here's to hoping for a good match by Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos!

Flekkefjord Senate Brings Forward Bill to Bring 46 Millions Surplus Dollars to Ice Hockey
For a long while, the Flekkefjordian Senate has been trying to decide what to do with a 200 Million dollar surplus of cash that they have disagreed on what to use it on. The Senate Majorty Committee has proposed a bill that would bring over 40 million of that money into the national sport, and one of the largest forms of revenue. Ice Hockey. The sport has been insanely popular in Flekkefjord for many years, and it brings in much money to the government owned national team.

Where All the Money Will Go
22 Million- New Arena
Since the dawn of hockey here, the National Stadium has always been the stadium that everyone plays at, from Peewee to pro, everyone plays here. A new arena would be huge as it will allow more kids to play hockey, and it will also be a key arena in a planned bid for a future World Cup of Hockey. The new arena will likely also be outside of Koppara, and out towards a smaller city, which will have teams travel less to find an arena to play at. The arena will be called the “Nordens Arena” or, Arena of the North. The Nordens Arena will sit a total of 7,000 spectators, and will have concession stands in and around the stadium.

14 Million- National Stadium Expansion
The National Stadium will need to be expanded for a future World Cup bid, so it will be very important to make sure it is at good capacity. Right now the arena sits a total of 6,500 fans, and the Bill passing will allow it to be expanded to 11,000, almost double of what it used to be. It will also expand the parking lot, and multiple other parts of the stadium, which should help allow for a smooth experience with the World Cup in town.

7 Million- World Cup Prep
These 7 million dollars will be allocated to other parts of the World Cup which might require money to be spent in this. This includes, organizational costs, paying staff, and hiring new staff to the arenas that will be expanded to triple of what they could overall hold before.

3 Million- Youth Development
After multiple poor World Cup attempts, the Flekkefjord National Team wants to improve the quality of the youth players. This money will help the committee develop current youth stars, and help produce them in larger quantities of them in the future.

Hockey Today Magazine

Rebels Without a Cause: The Wild Days of the RHL

Part II - Hitting the Ice

”Rebels Without a Cause” is Hockey Today’s look back on the brief, crazy history of the Republic Hockey League, which attempted to compete with the Ehrenliga back in the 1970s. Known for shady characters, physical hockey and losing money, Hockey Today is eager to take readers back through the history of this league.

Almost three years to the day after the initial meeting in that Stelburg Eispalast box, Marius Pogel sat in front of all sorts of TV cameras, sports journalists, and plenty of other people he’d invited to a ‘very important press conference’ at Stelburg’s Imperial Hotel. Alongside him were several business leaders within Siovanija & Teusland, and the initial expectation was that this conference would simply be to announce a new venture. 25 minutes before the conference, Pogel, ever the showman, tipped off a young reporter.

Today, sports media in the United Republics is dominated by RBC Sports, from the national broadcaster, and the Republic Sports Network (RSN). But in 1971, RSN was just starting out - they were nothing more than a weekly magazine, a specialty channel that only held the rights to the football Regionalliga Nordflachland and the Teus Major Junior Hockey League, and a twice-weekly radio show.

“I was in my third month there I think?” recalls Georg Muller, who would go on to become perhaps the most famous hockey journalist in the country. “Just in our office - which wasn’t much more than a few desks and chairs. And suddenly a call comes in, it’s this Marius Pogel. I didn’t believe him at first. He said ‘Georg, I’m about to make your career.’ And so he tells me, Imperial Hotel in 25 minutes, I’m announcing something that will change hockey in this country.” Muller laughs as he thinks about it. “You should’ve seen the mad scramble from our office down to the street, as all 6 of us jumped in taxis to get over there.”

Marius Pogel knew how to manipulate the media, that was for sure. The moment the press conference began, the curtains behind him opened up to show a flashy logo - ‘RHL’ encased in a gold and blue star - as well as 8 hockey jerseys behind him, all of various colours and design formats.

“Welcome to the Republic Hockey League,” said Pogel with a triumphant grin. It had been a long journey over the past three years to get to that point. Calls to business leaders in various cities, signing of leases with local arenas, and the hiring of various support teams to help bring the teams to life. All the while, it was kept almost totally under wraps. The RHL skated under the radar for several reasons. First of all, the Ehrenliga was perceived as invincible. Why challenge it? Every Saturday night, almost the entire country tuned in to see who was playing. Wolf Bleich and Stanislav Slezak, the greatest players of the era, were more well-known amongst the population than who the President was at the time. How could you compete head-to-head against that? So, the very idea that anyone would dare challenge it was considered ludicrous. Secondly, Pogel swore everyone involved to secrecy - the only way this would work, he’d tell them, was if we totally surprised everybody.

There were always some things that would leak out, however. Rumours in the various towns involved. When the name ‘Admirala Pomorie’ was trademarked in late 1970, one journalist questioned whether the name was being held up for use as a future Ehrenliga expansion team. In Rotmunde, pictures of the team’s jerseys appeared in a local paper a few weeks before launch - but journalists assumed it had to do with a new local junior team. The idea of challenging the Ehrenliga was seen as so far-fetched that no-one suspected a thing.

So when Marius Pogel stood before the television cameras of the nation, a huge grin on his face, there were jaws dropping across the country. RBC Sports quickly sent a camera crew over upon realizing what was going on, and their coverage started 6 minutes into the broadcast. Only RSN had the press conference from start to finish - a design feature from Pogel, who wanted to be in RSN's good graces. Pogel’s introduction to the league was widely replayed on news channels across the country.

“What does the typical Saturday look like in Siovanija & Teusland? You get up in the morning and take your kids to play hockey. You come home, and by 4:00PM you’re sitting in front of the television watching hockey. It’s in our blood. So why is the game at its highest level limited to only 10 cities in this country? Do cities like Stahlberg and Vlaikograd not deserve professional hockey too? There is plenty of hockey talent in this country, and furthermore plenty of demand, that can sustain another league. And we, the RHL, will be that league.”

The eight initial teams of the Republic Hockey League were revealed one by one. Admirala Pomorie, St. Jakob Cosmos, Stahlberg Steelers, Teufelsberg Devils, Pinguine Ternau, Raketa Bukovets, Rotmunde Reds and the Vlaikograd Lakers. The powder-blue of Ternau, the purple and gold of Vlaikograd and the green and red of Teufelsberg all became major talking points in the immediate aftermath. Pogel announced that the league was in the process of holding camps for potential players, would hold its first-ever draft in just a few months' time, and planned to drop the puck in September of 1972. “The press conference was going really well,” recalls Georg Muller. “And then he started taking questions.”

Marius Pogel was many things, but a man of patience he was not. The very first question seemed to instantly set him off: “How will you be looking to avoid competition with the Ehrenliga?” Pogel snapped right back: “I’m going to be competing with them head on.” Various questions received snappy replies, before Pogel finished with this rant:

“Stop talking about the Ehrenliga. Stop talking about the Ehrenliga. I don’t want to hear about it. The hockey in the RHL is going to be just as good - if not better - than there. There are so many players that never make it because of the old boys’ club mentality over there, and they are going to shine in our league. You asked me, how will you compete with old names like the Stelburg Kaisers and Olympia Borograd? People are going to forget all about them after the first period of the RHL, mark my words. Selling hockey in this country is like selling cows on grass.”

The reaction to Pogel’s words was mixed. The owner of the Stelburg Kaisers, Elmar Weigeknecht, told a journalist “I suggest Mr. Pogel gets his league on the ice before coming after us. All this because we wouldn’t give that conman a team.” In Ehrenliga boardrooms, the idea of competing with the RHL was laughed out of the room. Even some of Pogel’s own owners were shocked. “I turned the TV off,” laughs Ivo Kubac. “I was expecting a nice launch of the league, and by the end, I didn’t know if we’d make it to the season.”

Pogel knew what he was doing, however. His remarks built controversy. They built excitement. Could a league compete with the Ehrenliga? Would the play style be just as good? Whether they liked Pogel or not, they wanted to find out. Jumping at the opportunity to build an audience and a name for themselves, the brass at RSN offered Pogel a 3-year television deal. Pogel told them to make it 5. Reluctantly, RSN accepted, and the RHL had a home for its games to be broadcast. Pogel had no interest negotiating with RBC Sports, who already held the Ehrenliga rights. He knew he had something that could make or break RSN, and that they would have to accept whatever he offered.

Over the next 6 months, the various RHL clubs sought out talent across the country. They signed players from junior clubs who hadn’t been drafted into the Ehrenliga, looked for some of the top minor league players and gave them much-improved contracts. The biggest roster influxes came in late August, however, when cuts began to be made at Ehrenliga training camps. Why go play in the minors when you could make a major league salary in the RHL? Ehrenliga teams were beginning to worry at this trend.

Then, on September 2, two weeks before the opening game, the RHL made a big splash. Wolf Bleich was at the time considered the greatest player in Ehrenliga history. 9 Strauss Cup championships, 9 MVP awards, 1968 career points - he was simply the best. He’d retired from play two years before, at the age of 43, after a legendary career with the Stelburg Kaisers and the Felsenkirchen Jets. There were rumours, however, that Bleich wanted to return to the game. The boy from Stahlberg wasn’t done yet, they said.

Arno Klengel sensed an opportunity. How better to build the hype for his new team, the Stahlberg Steelers, than by signing the greatest player in national history, who was from the city? Klengel offered Bleich a 2 year, T750,000 contract - nearly double what the highest paid player in the Ehrenliga was making. There was no way that he could turn that offer down. And so, the famous #9, a national hero, was suiting up again - this time, in the Republic Hockey League.

The move sent shockwaves across the country. It gave the RHL credibility. It showed that they meant business. Ehrenliga clubs quickly looked to tie down their players to new contracts, longer ones that would keep them out of the RHL’s scope. Many players accepted, but some players wanted to wait and see just how much they would be worth on the open market. There was, for the first time, panic at the Ehrenliga - just how were they going to deal with this rebel league?

On September 23, 1972, fans filed into the Stahlberg Forum for the first-ever game of the RHL. It was a Friday night - despite Pogel’s promises, there was not a chance the league would go head-to-head with the Ehrenliga on Saturdays. Wolf Bleich and the Stahlberg Steelers were taking on the Teufelsberg Devils. Fans at the game received commemorative gifts stating they were at the home opener. Players signed autographs before and after the game. There was post-game entertainment provided by a local Stahlberg band. It was a fun atmosphere - fans came to the game in sweaters or jerseys. It was the opposite of the Ehrenliga - going to a Stelburg Kaisers game was almost like going to a Church. You had to be quiet, and you had to wear a suit. This, on the other hand, was exciting.

Game 1 was quite a success - the home Steelers won 4-2, led by two assists from Wolf Bleich, who could clearly still play at a high level. The game received rave reviews from those in the hockey world and fans alike, and there was a new interest in the RHL. RSN quickly added more and more games to a new national TV schedule - the ratings for game 1 had been quite higher than anyone expected. Advertising money was starting to come in. It was beginning to look like Marius Pogel’s risk was going to pay off.

As ice hockey moves closer and closer to a professional league, it's clear that not every club can pick up the expenses. From the current twelve clubs, we can identify a few tiers:

Safe
The four non-Aerellen teams, the West Coast Blizzards, Launott Polar Bears, Straudum Ice, and Noordrug Bi-state, are likely safe. Noordrug Bi-state are contemplating a move to a place with a larger population - but right now they reign supreme in their area and that's worth something as well. The Egevea Islanders are the largest team of their city and can count on Egevea. The Aevanna Scouts, Aevanna Plains Wanderers, and South Aevanna Storm are safe as well - despite being decades (or up to a century!!) younger than less stable teams.

Move/merge
These teams have merit, but are superfluous in the places where they are now: the Aevanna Explorers, Aevanna Bay Mariners, Egevea Northerners, and possibly the Aevanna Scouts and Noordrug Bi-state. A merge between the Explorers and Mariners is on the table, even their nicknames line up. The Scouts are the biggest team of Aevanna but see all their rivals merge or move out (or worse, fold), but they should still maintain their location. The Egevea Northerners are looking to move, well, north, to either Altiora or the island that is so far north it's not even depicted.

As far as the Aevanna situation goes: a professional league of this size can't have three clubs in that city alone. Out of the four remaining clubs (one merger, and three independent clubs), two will have to move as well. Right now those seem to be the Storm and the Wanderers, being the youngest clubs with the least history tying them down.

Fold
Nobody wants to see this, but the Southwest Aevanna Rangers' situation sees no other way than to fold.

Places to relocate to
The islands south and north of Aevanna/Egevea could each use a team. On the mainland, the region around Dartha (eastern Sudaefjoll) are an easy landing spot, and are immediately sure of decent funding coming from the strong IT industry there. The same goes for Lamau (central Sudaefjoll).

It seems that for now, Intermare (the large yellow province) is out of the question. They have the largest population, sure, but a large part of that market is seized by the Banijan league.
