Every six years, AHSCA has a general election for it's legislative branch of government and to date, the only democratically elected sector within the nation. Some may recall the special election two years ago to fill the position of Congressional Head with the resignation of Senator Mikela Olaff whom now serves as an ambassador overseas. Now every state has been asked to put up candidates to represent their states for the new legislative session. Will the powers shift again? We haven't seen a major political shift since the the elections of 2013. And the National Liberal Party is once again hoping to re-take control of the Congress as the Majority.
Each island of the UIS is allotted two sitting senators to represent in the unicameral congress. Additional seats may be allotted to minority parties on a conditional basis. This election is rather notable as several of the incumbents have reached their term limits or are retiring leaving a large open rush for political gain in the congress. Regardless of the outcome most powers are still vested in Her Highness, The Duchess and the Congress is more in a sense meant to be a direct voice of the people and streamline the legislative process. Still Duchess Villa generally believes in the cooperation between branches of Government and generally wants the Legislative to do it's due role over simply issuing Royal Decrees, laws put into action without formal Congressional Debate or Votes.
Political Parties in AHSCA:
Though host to several parties, AHSCA is largely a de facto two-party system with only two major parties gaining ground in politics. In a general sense, both parties would largely be considered on the left end of the spectrum but their policies and practices vary greatly that within AHSCA's own culture and system of government, one could easily be considered the conservative the other liberal. Her Majesty, The Duchess however never belongs or prescribes to a specific party. While not written into rule of law this was a policy adopted by Duchess Shino Villa, the First Duchess of the UIS in the hopes to fairly approve or disapprove legislation without undue bias or blind party loyalty.
United Island Party: This party was established during AHSCA's reconstruction era originally as the United Island Party, and sometimes mistakenly still called that. The party while fluctuating over the years has often regarded itself as a fairly progressive party, wanting to take AHSCA to new heights while still holding true to what makes the islands special in the eyes of its residents. It generally supports a progressive tax system, universal education, civil and political rights and a minor push towards vigilant international policy. Some would argue hawkish despite AHSCA is constitutionally forbidden from participating in a war unless directly attacked first. The party remains split in regards towards AHSCA having an official national religion with some arguing a greater separation of church and state. That said, AHSCA still generally recognizes freedom of worship.
Partty Motto: Together we form a bright future.
National Liberal Party: Despite the connotation of the name, in terms of island politics the NLP is considered the more conservative party. The NLP first rose as a political party in the first Major Congressional Elections held on the island but still found itself beat by dominate single party. The next election it took full control of the Congress, taking advantage of changes in the political climate at the time along with a particularly aggressive rainy season. Despite it's name, this party is largely seen as the more conservative party in AHSCA, with it's base largely in the old tribal politics of years past. Critics often say the party is isolationist but the party regards itself as not isolationist but simply selective due to history with various occupying powers. in general the party supports, the national recognition of the state religion of Madokamisim, strong environmental platform while at the same time relaxed fishing. Pro LGBT rights, centralized economics but opposed to open immigration. (Not all immigration just open and unchecked). Some argue the party is largely a matriarchal party but the party also welcomes men to serve. The party has largely opposed a nationalized education system more firmly believing in the individual choice and responsibility of families to decide.
Party Motto: Tradition of the people will hold us strong.
The AHSCA Communism Party:
Party Motto:"For the people shall become the inehriters of these islands"
National Islander Party - A split off from the old UIP, this is a party that supports broad military incopration into the UIS. Higher spending on defense programs and more militant education. Currently AHSCA has compulsary service but allows those who don't wish to serve in the military to opt for clergy service instead. THe NIP wants to expand both, 20 months of complusary military service and 12 months of clergy service.
Party Motto: "United, faithful and strong is what will make AHSCA last into the future."
