Patterick announces four different squads for the same tournament like some kind of loon

If this truly is to be Sean Patterick’s final tournament in charge of the Audioslavian national side, he’s making sure it’s going to be a memorable one.

In a bizarre press conference, Patterick announced a 54-man squad composed of three sets of 13 players ‘plus the jokers’, with every player being given a number based on their position and a suit based on… well based on very little, it seems.

Oh, and we have this monstrosity to deal with:

Image

Each of the four squads will trot out in Audioslavian colours for each of the first four games, with games five and six of the first phase being comprised of a ‘red’ team and a ‘black’ team.

Sarzonia (Away, Diamonds)
GK 1 Zarragoitia (Brisara FC)
RB 2 Riva (KT Moreazerua)
LB 3 Ramires (Chromatik)
DM 4 Nielsen (Oljestaden IF)
CB 5 Rastelli (Jinja City)
CB 6 Logan (Holdenberg)
RM 7 Kuijken (Excelsior Zijweg)
CM 8 Deschapelles (AC Izotz Zubia)
CF 9 Senna (CdF Celtade)
AM 10 Eurico (AC Izotz Zubia)
LM Q Bazterrika (KT Moreazerua)

Equestria (Away, Clubs)
GK 1 Wever (Walstreim Lions)
RB 2 Poulsen (Marine Coast United)
LB 3 Frandsen (Cazadores)
DM 4 Cacho (Cazadores)
CB 5 Asterisk (Moreazerua)
CB 6 Dan MacCowan (Cdf Celtade)
RM 7 Oteiza (KT Itzalovalle)
CM 8 Moxey (KT Itzalovalle)
CF 9 Rijsbergen (KT Moreazerua)
CF 10 Zozaia (KT Itzalovalle)
LM Q Van den Bossche (Oljestaden IF)

Banija (Home, Hearts)
GK 1 Artetxebarria (KT Moreazerua)
RB 2 Saint François (Revolutionaries)
LB 3 Osorio (KT Itzalovalle)
DM 4 Skidoomacher (KT Itzalovalle)
CB 5 Ceron (AC Izotz Zubia)
CB 6 Consuegra (KT Itzalovalle)
RM 7 Spijkers (Crisisbless)
CM 8 Texeira (KT Moreazerua)
CF 9 Rosel (Marinos Metropolis)
CF 10 Masiku (Eastal Lunar)
LM Q Knudsen (AC Izotz Zubia)

Sarzonia (Home, Spades)
GK 1 Stroud (1830 Cathair)
RB 2 Jansen (Union Cathair)
LB 3 Puskas (KT Moreazerua)
DM 4 Dec MacCowan (CdF Celtade)
CB 5 Gudmundson (AC Izotz Zubia)
CB 6 Soren (Oljestaden IF)
RM 7 Makaay (Oljestaden IF)
CM 8 Cariou (1830 Cathair)
CF 9 Gordon (Shamrock)
CF 10 Rosa (CdF Celtade)
LM Q Leandro Mexilhōes (Bombarralense)

Equestria (Home, Diamonds + Hearts)
Banija (Away, Spades + Clubs)

Players designated as Jacks and Kings in each line-up will be sitting on the bench, with Jokers Coren and Boisen on the bench for each game alongside a smattering of players from other ‘suits’.

As for the strength of each line-up, and whether or not they can compete in an alarmingly strong group, it would be generous to say that each team has a couple of holes in it. In general the squad’s average age is a positively foetal 22.7 across all 54 players.

The Diamonds include a strong central midfield comprised of Oljestaden rock Thorian Nielsen behind regular starters Deschapelles and Eurico, with Moreazerua’s Koldo Bazterrika on the left. Logan and Rastelli are both first choice centre-halves. Luca Senna has had an excellent season at Celtade, and Zarragoitia is perfectly capable. The weakness comes in the form of Roc Riva, who isn’t even first choice at his club, and 21 year-old winger Rogier Kuijken who, while solid for Excelsior, wouldn’t ordinarily be getting a look-in to the national team.

The Clubs are similarly strong in the centre, with Moxey, Cacho and Asterisk pretty much as sturdy as you can get, with one of the three MacCowan brothers - centre-half Daniel - a prospect. If Zozaia and Rijsbergen can strike a partnership up front then they could be leading the line for years to come. The weakness again comes on the wings, with Poulsen and Frandsen untested at this level (Frandsen is rather untested at most levels, to be honest) and Van den Bossche and Oteiza barely stand-outs for their club.

The Hearts contain Santiago Rosel, Kyran Knudsen and Erwin Spijkers, so aren’t lacking at all when it comes to speed on the wings, but Gael Texeira is a good five years away from his prime and Arial Skidoomacher hasn’t featured in the national team set-up for a long time. At theback, team captain Ceron and Itzi favourite Consuegra are solid, while Saint François is almost a complete unknown despite his transfer to Revolutionaries.

For the return match with Sarzonia, Goran Stroud will have his work cut out for him covering for a centre-back pairing of Eric Soren, a right back by trade, and teenage Zozi centre-half Hireild Gudmundson, who has yet to even make an appearance for his club. In midfield, Cariou will likely never make the grade at 1830 Cathair, with Mexilhōes and Makaay decent club players and not much else. Rod Gordon and Facundo Rosa is a ridiculous centre-forward partnership. Gordon has been fine as a bit-part player for Shamrock, sure, but Facundo Rosa is a winger who will be played out of position. CdF don’t play him up front because they’ve got Valentino Escandon there, but Escandon hasn’t even made the squad.

Fans will fear the worst as the national side line up against Sarzonia with large, weird looking diamonds on the back of their shirts and, in a few cases, a letter instead of a number. The Bulls haven’t played Sarzonia since World Cup 29, when an unremarkable Audioslavia side made the World Cup final. An omen?

No.

*The Prelude 2: Matchday One*

Anthor's home stadium was yet to be announced, so for now we'll just say that play in the National Stadium. It's not an actual name, yes. But for reporting and recording purposes, we'll put in as such in the heart of the capital Vaumort, particularly the 87,000 seater called the Royal Athletics Stadium. Also, their squad has not been revealed, too. However, their ranking shows Anthor was definitely no easy task to beat. It would require some kind of mystical miracle to pull out an epic win. Most likely an epic fails, but even if it were true it's not like the first match will end in a lopsided score of...I don't know...let's say, ten goals to none. But let's not talk about our opponents now (because we didn't know them, yet).

The mindset was always on this mantra: the best defense is a good offense. Don't get me wrong, I believe parking the bus was a boring tactic only used when a team wasn't willing to press forward and score more. However, don't complain about why they've been conceded after the attack broke down, and every player struggles to prepare for defense. Sometimes, if I was the manager, Khytonya needs to strike a balance between defensive and attacking abilities. In this case, applying the use of counterattacking after successfully shutting down attacking chances. But this would require a few players to help defenders into the quest of not conceding goals. Remember that Honma, McTavish, McKenna, and the Conacher brothers weren't superhuman. It's no laughing matter when their wall overcame, left improperly maintained by careless midfielders...and the coach too.

Hartley and Weigang must understand a few things about balance. Putting too much focus on one thing was just asking to be sacked as you would realise that games can't be won just by pressuring the defense or intercepting passes. Instead, both coaches must provide and mix their tactics that would support both positions by utilising the midfielders. For the attackers, it's a good choice to pick Boucher as the team's attacking midfielder. He's a playmaking genius with great awareness, so it shouldn't be rocket science for both Sakai and Liaw. For the defense, O'Reilly and Westwick will assist the defenders and bolster the walls even more. But it's Hartley's team, and they'll be benched in the first game. So, whoop the bloody do. What can we do about him?

AOCAF unveils "new look" NT setup
Scott McCrae
The Daily Mail National Soccer Writer

When the Commonwealth National Team kicks off against Flavovespia in the first match of group play at AOCAF 62, it will mark another phase of evolution in the structure of the FAC Technical & Coaching Departments, in addition to providing a look at a group of stars who will play prominent roles in the next World Cup cycle.
Women's NT manager Jennifer Prescott will again lead the side, with a new face by her side, although he's not new to her or anyone in the squad.

Darren Kirby moves up from his role as Under-15/17/19's manager to become Prescott's number 2, following the departure of Will Barnard, and Prescott will assume duties held by the other coach who left over the summer, Zoe Montgomery, who in addition to working with Kirby was also the FAC Director of Technical Development.

There is plenty more on that front, but returning to the team itself, there is a definite shortage of star power on the roster, but don't expect the quality of play to diminish. While it may possibly be the least experienced team fielded in a major tournament since the Baptism of Fire squad, it represents the entire spectrum of positional strength available.

Zach Johnston will see the main action in goal; the New Bremen keeper, who has been the National League's best over the last four season, will have a strong backline for support as Newmarket Ladies' Gabby Jordan—who has 35 caps—will anchor one side, while the newest capped defender, Tiffany Moss from Vermillion Wanderers in Nephara via Riverside City Ladies will be on the other. Moss, at 33 the oldest player in history to win their first cap, has been considered one the best centerbacks in the Nepharim 1st Division for several years. Victor Onikambe, Charlotte Bauer, Jerome Brooks and Darren Flowers will get long looks that they've been unable to obtain during WCQ.

In contrast, the youngest player in the squad will get an opportunity to show his prodigious talents in midfield, as Freddie Altman from University of Belle Haven will get his first senior team action, following a 20 minute cameo in the friendly against Mavinet. Christa Vuckovic, Amy Reynolds, Nicole D'Amico and Marcus Nolan will also get extended playing time to build their resumes for future callups. Max Rizzo, Susana Aguilar and Rey Guitierrez will provide leadership for the rising crop of future NT midfielders who will have huge shoes to fill.

The forward line has the most experience, with Ayana West and Reggie Laing getting the call, along with Daniel Pryor, all with over 25 caps apiece; those three will be supported by West's club teammate Alicia Craig, Marcus Garvey and Hayley Gibson, who combined have 24 previous appearances.

The backroom staff reorganization will see Danielle Harper take over for Kirby with the youth teams, which will become a self-contained aspect of the NT setup; Liam Sullivan and Harper will oversee the teams, including the Under 21 squad, with Chris LaRue, Kristen Sawyer and Matt Villareal to provide staff coaching to both the age group teams as well as the senior squads. Tony Weiss and Hailey Reinhardt-Zavaros will remain as the primary Senior team coaches, with Elaine King continuing tutoring the goalkeepers.

Sporting Director Trevor Richmond said he was pleased with the way things have come together.
"As we had to adapt to Pam (Scott), Shane (Newman) & Kate (DiMarini) leaving, we've rethought the people we have on staff and how they fit into the overall picture. We have confidence that the so called "next generation" of our coaching program are more than ready to step up into key spots. Jennifer taking up the TD job isn't that much of a change, as she was assistant director when Pam was here and we shared the TD role. Maestro & Friekder (NT manager Ichi Tuzzio and AM Dandalleion) both are really excited about the changes here, so everyone is happy, which makes Dave (Carlson, FAC Executive Director) happy."

lineup (3-5-2):
Johnston; Moss, Onikambe, Jordan; Rizzo, Vuckovic, Nolan, D'Amico, Reynolds; West, Pryor

Actual crest courtesy of Krytenia and kits courtesy of Siru (Home) and ZSports (Away) of Tikariot and Ziwana respectively
Bruised, busted, and completely anew, the Qasden Association Football Association (QAFA) is excited to showcase, for once, an entirely fresh team of individuals to represent the principality at the 62nd AOCAF!

To say things were fine before would be...well, we can stop the sentence here. Qasden's roster, which had only gone through a few minor changes since their debut in AOCAF 51, was becoming aggressively geriatric. Even the squad's youngest members were reaching their mid-30's, which only made the issues more grim when the players we had long adored began to suck at immeasurable heights. No joke, the association's reputation took blow after blow with the Vans underperforming in regionals and multiversals alike. In WC85, the Vans narrowly qualified over Riena and, much to the chagrin of just about everyone, proceeded to get their asses handed to them as usual, making no progress whatsoever. in AOCAF 61, the Pot 2 Qasden looked great on paper, if that paper was a week before actual gameplay began, of course, as the team became one of the highest ranked teams to finish last in their group, garnering a lonesome victory over Flavovespia, which in itself was a surprise. If the manager, Mercedinian David Bjarnasson, hadn't already been on the brink of expulsion, then WC86 was certainly the catalyst. After a series of shameful defeats, Qasden's chances of retaining a 5-cycle qualifying streak fell short with Kandorith's victory over Ancherion, firmly placing Qasden just out of contention while also missing out on the Cup of Harmony.

With David deposed, Assistant Manager Sylvia Zimari will be taking up the mantle left by Bjarnasson, becoming both the youngest manager in association history at 36; as well as the first female manager. Despite taking some of the heat from the recent performances, Zimari's promotion is still seen as a flickering beacon of hope for the association, with her first act being a full-scale reset of the roster, a somewhat controversial decision ahead of a massive regional tournament, though not unwelcomed. Long time national players such as Macron Abbott & Ryan Xandreas have opted to take up coaching jobs within the organization for their respective positions, with former captain Icarus Darsten becoming one of two assistant managers, another first for the organization. Joining Darsten will be Gaston Rolf, the now-former head manager of the Crystalline Caverns National Team, a team now being led by a literal feral wolf. While Rolf's record as manager was rather dodgy, he was able to cash in a favor and still be able to coach, albeit with much less power with a team the equivalent of watered down coke with ice still in it.

Despite the amount of changes done in such a short time, Zimari could be attributed to very little of it. The association president, Zachary Sedsten, is hoping to rebrand the team as youthful and a force to be reckoned with, an attempt made while also entering politics as a contender for the retiring prime minister's seat. Aside from the new set of faces, the Qasden Vans have also updated their looks, making the radical transition from a blue-red home jersey to a red-blue. An insane achievement of ingenuity, though the kit's sales are on par with the new away kit, one featuring the pattern of the official cat of Fyre, the Calico. But enough kit-talking! We still have a tournament to preview.

AOCAF 62, holy hot hams we're starting to feel old! Unlike previous regionals (or any other tournament, really), the contest will undergo a 3-phase, league-like structure, initially pairing equally-ranked teams before throwing them all into the blood dome or whatever. While the tournament is being held/funded by the Busoga Islands and World Cup Champions, Banija, the first phase will feature a double round robin taking place in each participant's borders, so there goes the cheap travel costs. The competing associations are divided into 3 leagues (A,B,& C) based on regional ranking, with group winners being promoted and group losers demoted, respectively. Despite our new and youthful prowess, the Vans were placed in League B, though as a top seed. Drawn into B2, the Qads will see initial gameplay against Gyatso-Kai, Saltstead, and the Sultanate of Oontaz, all three of which we have some form of history with. While not winning doesn't automatically mean elimination, getting promoted would almost guarantee a spot in the playoffs, though being demoted pretty much leaves that dream destitute. Of course, no fan wants to see their squad demoted, but there's no certainty that they can get what they want; only hope. Can Zimari and the fresh faces of Qasden deliver?

Dedicated Draw Leaves Desireable Khytonya Wanting For More

If there was one thing to take in our national team's inter-regional debut, it was nothing short of excitement. Yes, it's a boring scoreless game but dare we say it wasn't a bad effort for Khytonya. In fact, we consider it a victory if we could be honest. Let's all be lenient for a minute and realise just how many of those chances the attackers have. Too bad none of them converted into a goal, but at least for some shots, it was on target. Anthor was no pushover so the defenders had many ways to try put a stop to the main attackers. Some were amazing. Others felt sloppy no thanks to poor judgment for where they should be marking. It was only lucky any of those attempted shots either go straight to Honma's gloves or were so high it may as well end up in the roof of the Royal Athletics Stadium in Vaumont.

First Half: There was a lot of early attempts from Anthor, particularly the moment strikers Jason Rigsby and Jennifer McKenzie took up with a scoring chance between the 5th and 15th minute. Luckily, Khytonya's goalkeeper Yukiko Honma stepped in and saved 3 out of 6 shot attempts from Anthor. The other three went far from the goalpost. At the 21st minute, a real chance for Khytonya was in. Attacking midfielder K.P. Boucher went in to pass for Thomas Liaw, and with a blistering kick came sailing just over keeper Chloe Lamar. The crowd was cheering for the first time the Magical Bhoys did something exciting, even pretending they scored one, too.

The rest of the match sees Anthor dominated much of the field with many chances not taken well or just barely scoring one. Eventually, it would come to an equal fight between the two teams. Late in the first half, Liaw and his partner Keiji Sakai put out an acceptable effort alongside Boucher and fellow midfielder Alice Matthews. The latter subject to a minor foul from defender Ellar Sampson which even with her free-kick prowess failed to send the ball across the goal line. Just before half time, another foul was committed this time Wendy McKenna on Frank Cartwight. It was only lucky the referee didn't book her for a slightly rough tackle, though Anthoran spectators won't be too happy with that decision. As for Cartwight, he was replaced with a youngster Peter Hawkins well before he blew the whistle.

Second Half: The trend of Anthor's dominance came back from the early first half, only this time both sides even more hungry to score one. Everyone was finding new ways to score but all of them end up with a disappointing finish. Rigsby, McKenzie, Thorvald Padmore, and Nicholas Stark were desperate enough for the defenders to come and bring down the attack. With each intercepted pass, Jack and Kyle Conacher quickly passed to the *de facto* defensive midfielder Terry Sillinger, whom would be later substituted with a defensively minded Steve Ashton on the 67th minute. Now with the central midfield somewhat exposed, Anthor took the advantage and made a living hell out of the midfield. Matthews and her teammate Dawn Williams were forced to come to the centre while simultaneously return to the wide space. It was only a small single step for Anthor's attackers as Honma and the defensive wall kept destroying everything Anthor did from the Khytonian side.

It was in the 89th minute that another chance (for the 5th time) came in the form of a counterattack. Assistant coach Ben Weigang started to implement a counterattacking method to kindly complement with Arthur Hartley's pressing-and-passing game. As Rigsby pulls in a long pass to McKenzie, Jack Conacher denies the pass and starts a long, pacey dribbling to the centre of the field. As midfielder Jason Elsmore tried to put an end to effort, Conacher chipped the ball to Boucher, who overwhelmed Simon Dixon in an aerial contest. With one big cross to the penalty box, Sakai heads in the ball as Khytonya scored in the most memorable fashion possible. A memory that was only tarnished by the linesman signalled him for an offside. It was agony to which every Khytonian felt was an utter pain. Expect to see the linesman's mail box filled with death threats and vandalism of his house saying 'you jinxed us!'. Nevertheless, it was a beautiful goal that was never to be.

What does it mean?

When it comes to making headline saves, Honma was truly the queen of the penalty box. Her towering height came into good when the shots came. Plus, her smarts transitioned well into positioning as Honma knew exactly where the ball was directed upon.
For a memorable match, there was a load of shots flying left, right and centre. The astounding number of shots from Anthor dwarfed the number of shots from Khytonya. For the record, out of the 23 shots in this match, 93% of them came from Anthor. They were an experienced team. Nothing more and nothing less.
Boucher let out a great performance today showcased by his tremendous ability to bring every effort he can and resist the temptation of despair. He was the type of person whose persistence paid off in a 'debut goal that never was' from Sakai's efforts.

Khytonya will meet Gallavrynga in Scarlet Park, while Anthor will host another home game against newly unranked North Handoria.

*The Prelude: Matchday Two*

If we are being honest here, Gallavrynga is not a simple walk in the park. For starters, their manager Isaac Longwood knows the fans like goals more than their wives, but more because he is formally a forward in his playing years. His 4-3-3 offensively-minded formation, combined with inverted wingers and fullbacks, was the source of massive shootouts. When the whistle blows, nobody should ever call this a boring game. Additionally, Gallavryngans weren't willing to give up. Not until the fat lady sings. The fat lady being the referee, of course.

The full squad was filled with youngbloods ready to continue their phenomenal run against North Handoria. For starters, each player was expected to contribute to attacking chances, even down to the defenders as well. Players like Shakur Giraffe, Carlos Villanueva, Sean Booth, Francisco Testudio, Chiduke Mravenga, and Julio Sanchez are most suited on the attacking mentality because of their offensive abilities, as shown in the Giraffe's early brace in the previous match. Testudio's role functions similar to Boucher in terms of job as a provider for the attackers, whilst defenders like Mravenga and Sanchez were likely to join in the fun. That is the Gallavryngan way. A no-holds-barred group of gunners led by a man who wants nothing more than a goal at any minute.

After a draw against Anthor, the 4-1-2-1-2 formation was replaced with a 3-1-4-2 with one player on each defensive field. The Conacher brothers stays in the starting 11, but MacTavish is the only staying in this formation. McKenna starts in the bench, presumably from a bad tackling last game. Instead, Jared O'Reilly gets to appear out of the bench as a defensive midfielder, and quite a great strongman built like a boulder for a midfielder transitioned from a defender. The midfield is now filled with players fans would like to watch, except Miura who would come as replacement for Boucher. Otherwise, it was meant to be like a line of war seeking to push the midfield line and put the Lionhearts into serious danger, should the defenders forget what position are they supposed to play. Which is what Hartley wants when he needs more chances than he ever wished.

Now back in print after a brief ten-year hiatus!

Mriin Miring Us

One World Cup 78 qualifiers game aside, beating the Mrii is a storied Farf tradition—one the Mrii themselves are not afraid to mention. However, it can't be denied that the Satyrs have been troubling la Vherderoja more and more with the years. While we may have hoped this trend would've ended with our razor-thin win over them in the World Cup 86 quarterfinals, this appears to have been far from the truth, as yesterday's match proved.

Owing to the bizarre format the Banijans have come up with—we're clearly rubbing off on them—Pam had to field pretty much a full-strength eleven for this opening match. You just can't take your chances when your opponents are two very good sides and Krytenia. Pam still found room for changes, however, with Aanderaa and Exihosahar starting over Ibrelaná and Fermández, respectively. One decision proved sound, the other not so much.

At the World Cup, it took rue Cazade ten minutes to score the opener from long range. Perhaps as foreshadowing that the Satyrs are going from strength to strength as the cycles go on, this time it took the Szoirsian an extra minute to score on them. rue Cazade has gotten into the habit of scoring early goals, and it's not hard to see why: as a takilante, he tires out quicker than would be ideal, but is very effective when we're going for a smash-and-grab style of play. In this instance, his relentless pressuring of the Mrii midfield allowed him to catch them off-guard by stealing the ball from Winabæn Kevaarsen and heading straight into the box, where he fired past Dun Mekeus.

The rest of the first half followed this pattern: the Farves kept surprising the Mrii. In the twenty-eighth minute, a great long ball from t'Öéséné found a sprinting Gallegas, who'd left Karii Bruun biting the dust. The Faroleran's finishing was sloppy but good enough; Dun could've done better. In the forty-first minute, Loxjilo Exihosahar repaid Pam's confidence by playing a smart one-two with Gallegas before striding into the box and going for a cheeky curled shot which he had no right to pull off. Just like that, la Vherderoja was up three-nil.

Unfortunately, the Satyrs came back stronger than ever for the second half. Subbing out Tali'raia, just like last year, the Mrii found themselves able to tear apart the hastily-stitched-together Farf defense. They had some trouble breaking through, initially, but a great individual play from Malia Yonen and some sloppy goalkeeping from Aanderaa left Äzyr Fæwin in front of an empty net when the game was still very much in favor of the Farves.

As the minutes went by and the Farves tired out due to their inability to pace themselves, however, the Mrii completely took over. Farfadillis-based Ÿya Tuuvyr (even we had to copy paste that "Ÿ") must've left La Nueva Avenida fans at ease as her incursion into the Farf box let her blast it past Aanderaa without any issues. It was largely Aanderaa's fault, but also Ûsêtêrnìx's.

With fifteen minutes to go, and now only leading by one goal, the Farves let the nerves get to them. Pam's two substitutions—Lsôs for Ànáxímane and Wìjìnì for Gallegas—did little to prevent the Satyrs from coming at us with all they had. With the Farves looking shellshocked, they finally equalized in the eighty-fifth minute, with Istria Saara finally managing to break through after having had a very quiet game. Strikers live and die by their goal tallies, however, and Istria very much lived last night as she chipped the ball over an unsuspecting Aanderaa who had taken a step forward or two too many.

Scoring the equalizer, needless to say, did not calm down the Satyrs, but Ûsêtêrnìx, Exihosahar, Lsôs and t'Öéséné did seem to snap back after it, helping secure one point from the match by doing their job. Little and late, but not too little and too late, as Farfadillis is nonetheless in a very good position to advance to the next round, having shaken off their hardest opponent on paper. Ah, wait, we're playing two rounds? Okay, then this match means nothing and we should not be complacent.

Up next, we will be facing Krytenia, a team this journalist can only remember facing in the AOCAF Cup 48 semifinals. That's a good omen, at least.

Nicola Mentes may have preferred to play a couple of friendlies prior to the start of AOCAF LXII. He had a new, more attack-oriented system that was getting away from the traditional "total football on steroids" approach that the Sarzonian national football team has used since its international debut in the first-ever AOCAF. However, the Incorporated Football Federation failed to submit the necessary paperwork to arrange any friendlies, so the Stars had to remain content to competing against a collection of Sarzonian Football Confederation all-stars as a final tune-up prior to facing regional powers Audioslavia in the opening match of the current AOCAF.

Mentes was left to question the wisdom of the IFF's failure to arrange a pre-AOCAF friendly after Charlie King's defensive gaffe led to a Fergus Coren goal in the 87th minute that allowed the 10th ranked team in AOCAF to escape with a 3-3 draw, depriving Mentes of the victory in his managerial debut with the Stars.

"It was just a tough run of luck," Mentes said of the gaffe, which saw King whiff on what the defender said should have been an "easy" clearance of a threatening ball deep in the Sarzonia end. "Bad things happen sometimes. We'll get it corrected."

Mentes said he was generally pleased with his team's performance against Audioslavia, although he had a faraway look in his eye when asked about Audioslav legend Jeremy Jaffacake and his famous catch phrase, "G'nite bitches!"

"It's, erm, clever, I"ll give him that," Mentes said. "I just wish we weren't here talking about two lost points in the table."

Paolo Gomes made four saves in net in his first match as the full-time starter since World Cup 85 qualifying. There was one rising shot from Guillem Serra in the 12th minute that Gomes had no chance to stop and a 33rd minute tally on a direct free kick from Koldo Bazterrika that Gomes would have liked to have had back, but Mentes said he felt good about starting Gomes.

"He did what I expected from him," Mentes said. "I'm sure he'll get better once he's had more of a chance to play behind the defence."

The Stars admitted privately they missed the leadership brought by former team captain and defender Russ Howard, who was cut from the team prior to the end of training as Mentes fulfilled his intentions of improving the speed and youth of the Sarzonian back line. However, they also had Brady Reynolds, who scored one goal and assisted on markers from fellow midfielder Clayton Wilson and striker Jake Campos. They also had team captain Wilson and they had King, who now assumes more of a leadership role with Howard's departure.

Just don't ask King to comment on the geopolitical situation.

"I'm not even going there," he said.

George Wangolo, the former assistant manager, has left after the team's World Cup 86 title to go and become the senior manager for the Royal Kingdom of Quebec. That will leave Kausu Gassama hired as the new senior assistant manager. It is a prestigious position in Banija- the RBSA traditionally chooses the Senior Assistant manager, to be the head coach/manager for the youth national teams, and there is no exception in this case. He was the senior assistant manager at Istria City FC the past two seasons, where the club in Banija's biggest city reached new heights, winning the League and then following that up by winning the AOCL.

Brief National Team History
The Kadongo Kamu have played in exactly 395 games, as of the beginning of AOCAF LXII. This will be mark the beginning of our 12th World Cup Cycle, and this will be our 8th time entering the AOCAFs. We have entered in 11 previous World Cup Qualification campaigns(WCQ73, WCQ74, WCQ75, WCQ76, WCQ77, WCQ79, WCQ80, WCQ82, WCQ84, WCQ85, and WCQ86), and have made 7 World Cup Finals appearances(WC80-86). We have also participated in Baptism of Fire 60, and been a participant in three different Cup of Harmonies(CoH 66, CoH 67, and CoH 71). In three Cup of Harmonies, Banija has never once moved past the group stage in the competition, and in their lone Baptism of Fire, they earned a lone point.

After not competing at all during the World Cup 78 Cycle due to the RBSA's bankruptcy, they re-entered the world of international football in World Cup 79 cycle. A shocking World Cup 79 Qualification campaign saw them on the brink of qualifying, but the team simply ran out of gas and lost 4 of their final 5 matches to not make it to Ceni/Drawkland. Since then, the U21 team got 3rd place at the 42nd Di Bradini Cup, and the national team advanced to the quarterfinals of AOCAF LV, AOCAF LVI, and AOCAF LVII, establishing themselves as a strong regional side, falling to the eventual champs in the latter two tournaments. They stunningly qualified for World Cup 80, after starting poorly by losing 5 of their first 9, to going unbeaten in the second half of qualifying, where they won 7 of those games. In the World Cup 80 Qualification playoffs, a 3-0 first leg victory in Montreal, Royal Kingdom of Quebec, powered the team through to their first ever appearance in the World Cup Finals, advancing to sport's pre-eminent competition 5-3 on aggregate over Mercedini. While a pair of one goal losses saw them eliminated after two games, they earned their first ever victory at the World Cup Finals in a 2-0 win over New Gazi in their final group stage game. As they hosted World Cup 81, they went directly to the tournament, and went to their first ever knockout stages, winning Group A before falling, 1-1(2-1 AET) to Turori in the Round of 16. They cruised to qualification in World Cup 82, maintaining a top two spot in their World Cup Qualification group behind Brenecia for the entirety of the World Cup 82 Qualification campaign, getting to the tournament with relative ease before bowing out in the group stages.

The World Cup 83 cycle was their strongest yet. Starting with AOCAF LVIII on home soil, co-hosted with the Commonwealth of Baker Park, the Kadongo Kamu won 6 consecutive matches to open the tournament, taking their winning streak all the way to the final. Unfortunately, they were felled, 4-2, at home to their archrivals, the Equestrian States. Co-hosting World Cup 83 as well, the Banijans made a miraclous run at the World Cup, upending 5th ranked South Covelllo on penalties, and defeating the then two-time defending world champions Vilita in the quarterfinals, before falling, 3-2, at the national stadium to Starblaydia. They added to the trophy case, however, earning a bronze medal after defeating Cassadaigua in the 3rd place playoff game.

The World Cup 84 cycle, the first with real title expectations for the Banijans, was a disappointment in the regionals, as we fell 1-0 to Ko-oren in the AOCAF Round of 16, although we advanced to the quarterfinals of World Cup 84 before dropping to Eura in extra time. The World Cup 85 cycle seems to be a promise of hope for the Banijans. Although AOCAF LX was a rough tournament for the Banijans, it was surrounded by two excellent tournament performances for the Banijans. We won the U21 World Cup(DBC 47), and are just coming off earning our first ever senior-level trophy, by winning the 8th Eagle's Cup to be admitted as a full, permanent member of the Eagle's Club right before the beginning of World Cup Qualifying. Following that, the Banijans dominated World Cup 85 Qualifying, going wire-to-wire as the first place team in their World Cup Qualifying group, as well as earning more points in World Cup Qualifying(67) than any other team did throughout the entire campaign. Those strong performances both in the Eagle's Cup and World Cup Qualifying have caused fans to put an up and down AOCAF behind them, and heighten the standard for World Cup 85. While they escaped the group stages with four points, strong wins over Vilita and Zwangzug in the knockouts put them on course for a medal, as they eventually beat allies Baker Park in the bronze medal match, after falling 3-2 to the eventual champions Free Republics in the semifinal.

After a return to the AOCAF LXI Quarterfinals, their first quarterfinal appearance in the last 3 editions of the regional championships, they fell to Chromatika on penalties. The World Cup 86 Qualification campaign went rather swimmingly- the national team went a perfect 18-0-0 in World Cup Qualifying, the first time that had happened in well over 10 cycles. The multiverse's #1 ranked squad was brimming with confidence, the two-time bronze medalists entering World Cup 86 trying to win the biggest trophy in all of sports for the first time.

Marcus Waters has always preached the following- "you've got to win at home before you can win the World Cup." It's always meant you've got to win in Atlantian Oceania before you can expect to win the World Cup. And while we've never won the AOCAFs, our group was all Atlantian Oceania sides- Ko-oren, Chromatika, and Mriin. We finished in first place with a 1-0 win over Ko-oren, a 2-2 draw against Chromatika, and a 0-0 draw against Mriin being enough to earn 5 points. Then, we faced a gauntlet of former World champions. A 1-0 win over them put us in our fourth consecutive World Cup Quarterfinal, against 5 time World champions Valanora. A thrilling 4-3 win put us in the semifinal, again facing a GSW rival- World Cup 84 winners Farfadillis. In one of the wildest World Cup semifinals ever played, Banija came out on top 7-6, with a stoppage time winner to put them in the Final against the World Cup 85 winners Nephara. It was a true game of the century- neither team had lost a competitive match since the start of World Cup Qualifying, neither losing during Qualifying or the Finals. And in that thriller, it would be the Banijans who would win, taking a lead and holding onto it, winning by 3 goals to 2 against Nephara to lift the trophy and declare themselves World Cup Champions.

List of National Team managers
1. Kizza Kabila(Banija). Manager for Baptism of Fire 60 and the World Cup 73 Qualification Campaign. Overall record of 0-14-1(W-L-D).

Kizza Kabila is the only Banijan to have ever managed the national team. Hired for Banija's first foray onto the international scene in this sport, his reign was universally derided as a disaster. Managing 15 games, he drew his first game in the Baptism of Fire, and not only lost the next two, he then lost ever single match in the 12 game World Cup Qualification campaign for World Cup 73, with the side only scoring 5 goals across the entire campaign. Unceremoniously fired after becoming one of few managers to go through an entire World Cup Qualification campaign without earning a single point, he, alongside the entire board of the RBSA, resigned after the last game. He was disgraced in the sport after the campaign, and, to this point, has never returned to top-level soccer.

2.Jan Cassallerus(San Llera): Hired before the start of the World Cup 74 Qualification Campaign, managed through the World Cup 77 Qualification Campaign. Overall Record of 27-32-16(W-L-D).

Banija put its eyes abroad, searching for a foreign manager before the World Cup 74 Qualification campaign, and found Jan Cassallerus. He is Banija's longest ever serving manager, being at the helm for four entire World Cup cycles, and being at the helm for 75 total games, a kind of longevity unheard of in the modern game, especially managing the national team. He started winning a game at the Coupe D'Esquarium, in what was known as the group of death. He was largely celebrated for bringing the team into relevancy. The expectations were through the floor, following Kizza Kabila, but he brought the team to Cup of Harmony 66 and Cup of Harmony 67, as well as advancing in Olympic Qualifying and getting third place at the United Valhaven Regional Football Championships. He was forced into retirement after the World Cup 77 Qualification campaign, when the RBSA declared bankruptcy, and could not participate in the World Cup 78 Qualification Campaign due to their inability to compensate players and staff.

3. Randolf Cherry(Drawkland): Hired before the start of the World Cup 79 Qualification Campaign. Overall Record of 20-24-2(W-L-D)

Randolf Cherry, after the RBSA got its act together, was hired- controversially- as the manager of the national team. Not that his own hire was controversial, it was applauded across the sports spectrum here at home. He was given a 3 cycle contract, and everyone knew what the goal was- to make the World Cup Finals at least once over the course of the contract. They understood that it would take time to climb the rankings, and they were willing to give him the leash. However, he came in a very awkward situation. Adama Sowe, the Chairman of the RBSA, allegedly first offered the job to Sarah Owens, out of the Equestrian States. Of course, it is illegal in Banija for women to coach men's professional teams, and that caused controversy. And yet, here he was- the manager of the national team.

His own home country of Drawkland is, of course, very progressive in that area, where the sport is dominated by the ladies. Regardless, he had an excellent start to his reign as a manger, and was initially extremely popular. He won his first game, in a special Eagles Club match, against Aggrey-Fynn Land. He lost his first few qualifiers, but he went on a dear through the middle of qualifying, which included a 7 game winning streak on home soil. Big wins against then 4th ranked Chromatika at home and then 32nd ranked Eshan, put them in the conversation of World Cup Qualification, though they were simply not strong enough.

The Cup of Harmony was considered a disaster, finishing in dead last in their group. The competition maybe simply isn't for the Banijans, eh? But they were strong throughout the offseason, making a surprising quarterfinal run in AOCAF LV and bringing high hopes to the squad going into World Cup 80 Qualification. Hopes were through the roof for the national team, maybe even bordering unrealistic. They struggled, and the campaign got worse as the pressure built, as the squad lost their final four qualifiers of the first half of qualifying. With the campaign seemingly in free-fall, he was fired, as the RBSA said they wanted time to conduct "an open, thorough, search."

4. Marcus Waters(Equestrian States): Hired after the 1st half of World Cup 80 Qualifying, present manager of the national team. Overall record of 173-56-30(W-L-D). All-time winning percentage of 66.80%. All-time points percentage of 70.66%.

Marcus Waters was the national team's assistant manager with Randolf Cherry above him, and the manager of the youth national teams. He first gained notoreity in Banija after successfully leading the U21 team to a 3rd place finish at the 42nd Di Bradini Cup. With his abilities clear, it made sense to move onto him as the interim manager as they searched for a permanent manager ahead of the second half of World Cup Qualifying. However, he was able to complete a stunning turnaround of this team. His first game in charge, he changed nearly the entire backline, and had a massive upset, away to Qasden, by a score of 3-2. A 3-0 victory over Razenthuria in the other mid-qualifying friendly got high hopes for him.

Marcus Waters went out with an intent to keep his team focused, despite everything going on at home. He has proven adept at navigating the political minefield that is this job, especially with his own country of origin essentially at war with Banija. He didn't lose a single game in the second half of qualifying, winning 7 games to get to the playoffs, including when the team was forced to play home games in Montreal due to ongoing violence within Banija. He was widely applauded for getting the team ready to play in Montreal, and winning 1-0 against Turori, the group's top seeded squad, and a 3-0 win in Montreal in the Qualification playoffs. While the RBSA interviewed four other candidates, his successful push through the World Cup Qualification playoffs and into Banija's first-ever World Cup Finals essentially clinched the job for him, as he put pen to paper to take the interim tag off of his title ahead of the 80th World Cup Finals.

Since then, of course, he has done a lot to garner the confidence of the higher-ups, and of the fans. Falling to the eventual champions in the quarterfinals of both AOCAF LVI and AOCAF LVII was widely seen as a positive. As well as, of course, a surprising Fourth Place finish in the Cup of Champions Six, highlighted by a surprising point earned in their matchup against Nephara, while also pushing through to the Round of 16 of World Cup 81, pleasing the home fans. A different sort of pressure faces him this campaign, however.

For the first time in his reign, you could say that Banija had a disappointing tournament, failing to advance in World Cup 82 beyond the group stages. It might be harsh to say that- on paper, advancing from a group with both Pasarga and Farfadillis is a tall order if your team is not Pasarga or Farfadillis. They responded well, however, winning six consecutive games at AOCAF LVIII, and knocking off major nations including Cosumar and Mriin at the tournament, before being felled in the final, in their own capitol of Busukuma, to Equestria. Following up with a World Cup on home soil, they continued that momentum forward from AOCAF LVIII, as the Banijans took on the role of giantslayers on home soil. They beat the 5th ranked South Covello side, and the then two-time defending world champions Vilita, before eventually falling to Starblaydia in the semifinals, though they still earned a bronze medal. Although momentum was blunted after a tough 1-0 defeat to Ko-oren that secured an early exit from AOCAF LIX, they followed that up with their second straight appearance in the World Cup Quarterfinals, where they fell to Eura in extra time.

The last two cycles he really got the team to rise above themselves. The last two World Cup Qualification cycles, Banija has finished as the best team in World Cup Qualifying by points earned. And he has the silverware to match- a bronze medal earned in World Cup 85, followed by a gold medal in World Cup 86. Having risen from basically nowhere in Equestria to household name status in Banija, he looks to continue the ascending dynasty that he feels he has built with the Kadongo Kamu.

1. The Equestrian States. All time Banijan record against opponent- 0-6-1(W-L-T).

The Equestrian States are easily Banija's biggest rival, and by a country mile. It has all the makings of a good international sporting rivalry- plenty of matches played, history of competitive matches, geopolitical rivalry, player familiarity, and, of course, geographical proximity- all those boxes are checked. They've played each other 5 times, and Banija has come out on the losing end each and every time, most recently a 4-0 clobbering at the hands of the Equestrian States during Banija's final friendly before this qualification tournament began.

Three times have they played in competitive competition, and three times Banija has fallen. The Equestrian States eliminated Banija from Cup of Harmony 71 in group play, while also defeating the Banijans in both the opening match of World Cup 80, and the final group stage match of AOCAF LVI, though the Banijans still advanced to the quarterfinals of that tournament. The familiarity of players between each other is strong. Banija's present and most successfull all-time manager, Marcus Waters, is Equestrian. A number of players in each country play in leagues in the other. Famous Equestrian NT players like Aaron Aiza, Rosie Tyler, and Josef Lawrenz, ply their trade in the Banijan Soccer League, with Aiza particularly growing to superstar status while winning league titles at Herzegovina City FC.

Banija's first ever major final in this sport, at the senior level, was against none other than Equestria at the national stadium, with the winner to be crowned champions of AOCAF LVIII Final. In front of a decidedly pro-Banijan crowd, it was the Equestrians who dashed Banijan dreams of glory on their home turf as they picked up their first ever major international silverware, with a 4-2 victory. That victory has made the Banijans just that much hungrier to defeat their bitter rivals, and though the history is lopsided in favor of Equestria, that has just fueled the fire on this side of the matchup. The two sides co-hosted World Cup 83 together, and almost had a rematch of their AOCAF LVIII Final in the World Cup Final, though Banija could not fulfill its end of the bargain as they fell to a stronger Starblaydia side in the semifinals. Equestria, of course went on to win the World Cup, and the next AOCAF to boot, establish a fully fledged dynasty. The Banijans, in pre WOrld Cup 84 Qualification friendlies, got their first ever result against the Equestrians, a 0-0 draw in Everfree.

With the Banijans and Equestrians drawn into the same group for Phase 1 of this tournament, Marcus Waters hopes to finally get a win for the national team against Banija's greatest rival.

1. CAM Namakula Kawesa

Namakula Kawesa is one of the most interesting players to follow on this team. She is the first woman to ever put on the green and white for the senior national side, the first beneficiary of the repeal of the gender segregation law within the country. Implementation has been slow, as there are only a handful of female players in the BSL right now, but the rise in change of culture is always slow. Still, she has smashed that glass ceiling on her own, and Kawesa is looking to ensure that she is well respected on the national and international stage.

With her platform comes great expectation, and with great expectation comes great pressure. So far, she has been able to handle it. She scored crucial goals at AOCAF LVIII en route for the Banijan run to the final of that tournament, as she came off the bench behind Okparro. She did the same at World Cup 83, playing crucial minutes there as well. She was able to earn herself attention in the transfer market, and now she plays for the Gwinevra Barbarians. She has shown her talent for the Barbarians, scoring seven goals in the league and 11 in all competitions in her first season for the Barbarians, where she was a regular fixture in their starting XI, and helped the team get 2nd in the league and earn a Champions Cup berth, as well as scoring in the Marshall Cup Final, which is Apox's major domestic cup competition. She has performed at expectation in Apox.

And now, of course, she'd held the #10 jersey for a number of cycles, and she is assuredly one of the first players every week whose name goes down onto the team sheet. She's a true star in her own right- and now, with the spate of retirements following Banija's World Cup 86 triumph, has found herself as one of this team's leading veteran voices. While she does not where the armband herself, she is the squad's alternate captain, and her voice is surely an important one on the pitch. With the team's new 2 striker formation, more responsibility is placed upon her to perform in a traditional playmaker's role, to try and feed the ball to Banija's strikers up top, Ilman Jawara and Idai Uster.

2. CB Kuma Bultum

Kuma Bultum is one of the most accomplished Banijans to ever play this sport. Of course, the all-time most accomplished one is Gitonga Kahara- the leading goalscorer, captaining the World Cup side. But of course, Kahara is gone, and although there were a number of intriguing options- Kawesa, Francois Tantoh, and Madu Okparra, just to name a few, it would be Kuma Bultum who would be awarded the armbanded after the retirement of the long-time captain.

Bultum is the first national team captain to be a defender since George Wangolo, the team's former assistant manager, first ever Banijan Galactico long-lister, and the now senior manager for the Grim Repears(Royal Kingdom of Quebec NT). Aka, back in the 70s. Ever since the RBSA's bankruptcy-induced hiatus that caused the squad to miss World Cup 78, the national team has had four captains. George Wangolo for World Cup 79 cycle, Kiggwe Mavuto for the World Cup 80 Cycle, Chibuzo Afolayan for cycles 81-83, and then Gitonga Kahara for cycles 84-86. All left their mark.

And now Bultum is the next in that prestigious list. He has long been an anchor on the back line for this national team. Playing at what many consider to be the biggest club in Atlantian Oceania, he is a starter for Raynor City United in Valanora. They bought him from Bunyoro RSC in the BSL for a stunning $22 million NSDs- far and away a record transfer fee for any Banijan ever. But he has been worth the funds. Week in, week out, he is a dominant force on the back line for club and country. He rarely gets beaten on the dribble, and is excellent in the air.

His excellent performances have been recognized- He has reached the Galaticos long-list for the third consecutive season, as close to an authoritative document that you can find on the top 100 players in the multiverse. He is the only Banijan to long-list three times. He is the first Banijan to ever appear in the Galaticos Starting XI, and remains the only Banijan to short-list on that prestigious list twice. He will lead the switch from a back 4 to a back 3, as his ability to command a backline makes the gaffer believe that this team can indeed switch to a back 3. He will look to solidify his reputation as one of the multiverse's top defenders during the AOCAFs and throughout the World Cup 87 cycle.

3. ST Idai Uster

One of the national team's two star strikers who play up top. Idai Uster is unique among her teammates for this- instead of playing for a club and going professional at such a young age, she is the only Banijan(And remains so) in the post bankruptcy era(World Cup 79 forward) to play college soccer. Having played at Loyola-Istria for a single season, she was dominant as a freshman, meaning many thought that she made a foolish decision to play for them and not go play for a paycheck immediately. However, she got noticed by Marcus Waters, and got her first national team callup at AOCAF LIX.

Ever since then, she has been a fixture for the national team coming off the bench. No matter- the young female striker was quickly lapped up to go and play in the Schottic Premier League, and she had strong performances there. After playing in Schottia, she eventually hit the transfer market to go play for a massive club in the world's best league- and she was signed to wear the #9 jersey for AFC Treason in Nephara. To say that the signing paid off is an understatement.

Increasingly, of course, there is all sorts of competitiveness for spots on the national team. But as Ilman Jawara had a stranglehold on the starting striker role, Uster chose this past season to really explode onto the scene. 24 league goals in the last season of the Nepharim Premiership- good for third in the league, and more importantly, helped lead her team to a double, as they won both the Premiership and the Copa de Campeones. She played a starring role their as well, scoring a hat trick in the CdC Final to put them over the top.

Coming to the national team in top form, Marcus Waters faced a question- how could he not play her? But he didnt' dare mess with the lineup that he had. She was the first person off the bench, playing in all 7 games in World Cup 86 without recording a start. But no matter- even in limited time, she made her presence felt. She scored three goals, including the game-winning goal on Matchday 1 against Ko-oren, and scoring in the World Cup final against Nephara. But it begged the question more- for someone who was clearly hitting their prime, how could he afford to leave her on the bench?

Her performances caused Banija to full-time switch to a Back 3 for the first time ever. With players like Gitonga Kahara retiring, Marcus Waters knew that he'd have an opportunity to play his strikers together, and he is doing just that. For the first time ever, she's a member of the Banijan starting XI. While the team will have to get used to the new formation, she had already done her talking on the pitch- Waters simply couldn't afford to leave her out.

4. ST Ilman Jawara

And now, for the other starting striker. Ilman Jawara has been with the national team for quite a while now. In terms of club football, he leads the starting line for Soldarian FC, in Valanora. You'll notice a pattern- the pipeline from Valanora to Banija is ever-flowing for this sport. Many of our best players play in Nephara, for reasons due to proximity and wealth, and it is a pipeline that is expected to continue for a while. And Ilman Jawara is one of the many beneficiaries of that pipeline.

He has done well for Soldarian FC, leading the strikeline as they are as competitive as ever in the Elven Premiership, chasing RCU. He has helped lead them to a league title, alongside almost leading them to the promised land in the IFCF, helping take the squad to the IFCF Champions League semifinals on one occasion. But what has he done at the national team level? The long time contributor has been around for a while, coming off the bench at World Cup 83. This wasn't his first goal, but his most famous goal before he became a starter was when he scored the winning goal against Vilita in the World Cup 83 Quarterfinals. Considering the success we've seen since then, many see that game as a turning point, from Banija being simply a good team who has the occasional great day, to vaulting itself to elite status.

While Waters would never fully commit to him at the position, he has had a vice grip on the #9 spot for the national team ever since World Cup 83. Assefa Yitebarke retired, and Ilman Jawara has been leading the frontlines. And he has fulfilled his end of the bargain, scoring goals- scoring loads and loads and loads of goals. He is the second all-time leading goalscorer for the Banijans, and many believe that he has a chance to pass Gitonga Kahara and become the second Banijan to hit the century mark in terms of international goals.

His routine excellence at the Banijan has helped make Banija's attack one of the most feared in the multiverse. Even as Idai Uster started her play for his spot, he has continued to put in good performances. As she became known as a star in Nephara, he continued to raise his level of play, and became the second ever Banijan to be named to the Galaticos Starting XI, and now is the only player on this team who has the right to be called a present Galactico. He will look to continue to excel for the national team as he tries to chase down Gitonga Kahara's goal record.

Flavovespia 1–4 Baker Park

Flavovespia’s opener against Baker Park ended in a very convincing win for the visitors. Flavovespia went into League A knowing as one of the lowest seeds they’d struggle, but this performance may have shown the level of disparity between the two sides.

Flavovespia lined up in Highland Road with a squad very reminiscent of the one that went to the Cup of Harmony 78 quarter finals. In contrast, Baker Park had brought a squad that was very much chosen with the upcoming World Cup 87 in mind. The yellow and black home kit for Flavovespia was worn, Baker Park in their white away shirts and shorts, and yellow socks.

The early signs were promising for the visitors, and less so for the hosts. Baker Park seemed to play the ball with ease, finding the right passes and moves to advance forward. Even when Flavovespia could get the ball, it felt that they couldn’t sustain any sort of pressure or mount a decent attack. 11 minutes in and the opener came, and it was deserved. Max Rizzo sent in a low cross towards the box, and Ayana West got goalside of Alexander May. At close range, West steered the ball past Aarif Muhammad. 0-1 for Baker Park, the opener was in.

Flavovespia improved a little as the first half developed, but still struggled to match Baker Park. On the half-hour mark, this proved to be their undoing. Poor communication between the defence and midfield allowed the ball to drop to Marcus Nolan with nobody near him, around 25 metres out. He took a touch, and unleashed a shot before a Flavovespian could close down. The shot was strong, on target, and Aarif Muhammad had no chance to keep it out. 0-2, the lead was doubled and Baker Park were on top. They had another 2 shots on targets before half-time, but both were blocked. It would be 0-2 at the break.

Hopes that Flavovespia could stage a comeback were dashed quickly. In the 52nd minute, Ayana West, the first goalscorer turned into the provider. In the box and under pressure from Tony Gardner, she turned her back to goal and aimed a through ball into the path of Daniel Pryor. Pryor got there ahead of May, and took a quick shot. It was on target, down low and sped into the back of the net. 0-3 now, with Flavovespia struggling to get any footing in the game. Alexander May was subbed off for Alastair Ross.

5 minutes later, and the fourth goal for Baker Park. A free kick whipped in bounced around the box several times. Eventually it fell to Ayana West, who was just 5 metres out and with Aarif Muhammad out of position. The shot wasn’t difficult, and West doubled her tally in this game. 0-4 before the hour mark, and for Flavovespia, a brutal reminder of the reality of facing up against some of the region’s elite sides.

Flavovespia at least got a consolation in the 71st minute. From a corner, James King’s in-swinging ball found Tony Gardner running in towards the far post. He got to the ball, and glanced it past Zach Johnston and into the goal. It was 1-4, Tony Gardner celebrating with some individual passion, but the body language of some of the Flavovespian players summed up a game they knew was beyond them. To their credit, by the final 15 minutes, they had a few chances, and substitute Ramon Martin flashed a chance just wide with Zach Johnston beaten. However the game was long lost by that point, short of an absolute miracle.

1-4 it finished then. Flavovespia and manager Arnold Stevenson knew that the new two phase system would be tough to begin with, but this game was a sobering reminder of the uphill ladder they have to climb. The other game in Group A1 saw Valanora and Chromatika play out a 9 goal thriller. Chromatika came out of that 4-5 winners. Flavovespia now travel to Valanora, otherwise known as The Eternal Empire and Hatire Memorial in Capri. Both these teams will want to get points on the board after early losses. Valanora will want to avoid an upset to the bottom seeded team in the group, Flavovespia will look for a famous victory or draw. These sides met in the last AOCAF Cup, 3-0 to Valanora the result.

A Sett Precedent?
Osarius 7-3 Sett Forest

T. Walsh
J. Martin, G. Colson, R. Oatley, B. Neal
A. Haynes, A. Williams, L. Dennison, C. Williams
C. Feeney, A. Geeson

Three goals scored by the Sad Badgers was not enough to
secure victory in their first ever international fixture
against Osarius. Mount Crown Stadium, located in the
capital Burningham, played host to the fixture, and
perhaps it was the imposing surroundings that uneased
Sett Forest players; Mount Crown, whom the stadium is
named after, towers above the 98,000 all-seater stadium,
a capacity larger than our own capital's population.

Osarius, a ranked opponent, controlled the game from the
word go. Centre backs G. Colson and R. Oatley struggled
to handle the impressive movement of the home attackers,
causing much chagrin to goalkeeper T. Walsh who felt so
tested, they'd be over-qualified in any other line of
work. Pass after pass, the semi-pros of the Sett Forest
leagues were pulled apart and humiliated in front of fans
watching from home, and the 56 that made it here in person.

Manager J. Barclay mentioned after the game that the
atmosphere in the dressing room at half time was tense.
Some members stressed, unleashing anger on bottles on
unnamed sports drinks. Some members were despondent,
wishing to keep to themselves in silence in a toilet
stall. But the AFC Lumington manager said he gathered his
players and advised that this tournament is but a
prototype; there is no expectation on result, just on
effort and pride.

The second half bore more fruit than the first half could
conjure. It may have took until the 65th minute but the
first Sett Forest international goal was scored - a L.
Dennison corner was headed low by a leaping C. Feeney,
bouncing off the upright and across the line. Jubilation
for the faithful who turned up who but 5 minutes before
were singing "Let's pretend we scored a goal!".

The second of Sett Forest's goal came very shortly after
when a pass back fell short of it's intended target and a
keen-eyed A. Geeson pounced upon the opportunity to poke
the ball past the Osarius 'keeper before slotting a debut
goal in to the open goal at 68 minutes. The third goal by
C. Feeney was created by A. Williams when they headed
forward found the 31-year old in a prime position to
round off the evening with a lofted effort.

When asked after the game if there will be changes for
the next fixture against unranked Iles Rogieres, J.
Barclay said "A couple. It was a very old squad tonight,
let's see what some of the youngsters can do
".

28 Greatstreet, Marienburg, Pluvia and the Saxean Isles

Prof. Charles Cunningham of the history department at the Royal Marienburg University was reading late again. He'd come home late, had a row with his wife, and spent most of the evening locked in his study with the diary. He'd be damned if he was going to give up a scholarly opportunity this important. This could make his career. He foresaw a tenured position, a department chair, a book tour...but right now he had eaten a cold supper and was sitting in a dark room looking at a book.

The last diary entry saw the failure of William II's efforts to convince his father, Alfred III, to change the political and social situation in the Saxean Isles. Struck by their poverty and unrest, William saw education and the granting of certain rights to be the solution to the Islanders' problems. But his father rebuffed him, defending his rule and his decisions. The next several diary entries were relatively unimportant, as far as Professor Cunningham was concerned, mostly dealing with his studies, military training, and the weather. Just as he was about to go to bed, he discovered the next entry and he knew he couldn't stop now.

January 1, 1885

The New Year does not bring joy for me, my sister, and my dear mother. Although we celebrated and danced and drank on the eve of the New Year, we awoke in the morning to find my father dead. The physicians say it was apoplexy [NB: stroke], possibly brought on by his legendary diet or by the stress of ruling the kingdom. But I believe that I, tragically, played a part. I continued to question Father and try to cause him to change his mind on the Isles. He refused me every time, even growing angry with me on more than one occasion. I can only conclude that I played a part in this. How bitter are the dregs of the New Year's cup.

Mother is inconsolable, and I cannot find fault with her for it. They were married for nearly forty-six years. They met at a royal ball, sneaked out, climbed a tree, and looked at the stars. They told us that story so many times growing up that I can recite it from memory, almost. They were the perfect royal pair; the people loved them, they loved us, and they loved each other fiercely. It will be years, I feel, before Mother is truly healed from this tragedy. Anna, for her part, is bearing it stoically. She is with Mother constantly, caring for her, even brewing her own tea for her. I know it is hard for her, as she is not yet a woman and she had hoped for my father to be there on her wedding day. But, even more secretly, I know that she had harbored hopes of more than a princess' life, more than a wedding, and now she will be expected to be even more of a royal with the passage of the most august royal from the life of our nation.

The funeral is in three days, in Our Lady of Providence Cathedral. It shall be a heavy day, made heavier by the knowledge that my coronation will be the next day. Yes, I, a man of not even twenty years, eight years younger than my father when he took office, will be crowned King of Pluvia and Laird of the Saxean Isles. It is a title that bows even the hardiest of men. How shall I carry it with my father gone?

Northwest Kalactin 1 0 1 0 2 2 0 1
4 Dogsmouth 1 0 0 1 0 1 −1 0

Lineup (3-3-4): Romero, Martinez, Anderson, M. Hall, Owens(A, 41), Gilbert, L. Hall, Sanders (G, 41), Butler (G, 56), McCarthy(A, 56), Torres
Man of the Match: Will Sanders
Fouls: Yellow Card, 49, L. Hall

Not a bad start, eh? Coming in as the Pot 1 team we could’ve asked for more against the rising force Huayramarca, but at least it wasn’t a loss, some of which we have gotten used to after these most recent World Cup Qualifiers. Coming in as arguably the best team in the group, we have played great during recent AOCAFs, but not as great in WCC sponsored events. In the last edition, we went all the way to the Quarterfinals against an Audioslavia team that would go onto make the finals, before losing to their fellow triangle of pain member Starblaydia.

We knew coming in that out toughest match would most likely be Dogsmouth, who we do have a strong history against, which included a Round of 24 win in the most recent AOCAF, which helped us on our great run to the Quarterfinals. The Royal Kingdom of Quebec however, will likely not prove to be an easy match, as once they were one of the best teams in the world, and also qualified for the most recent World Cup. Huayramarca on the other hand, may be the easiest team in our group, they don’t have much of a history yet, so we don’t really know what to expect yet.

The Kalactanian team put out a normal match card for them, which included the combination of Torres, McCarthy, Sanders and Butler out at starting as the strikers. Moving down a bit, they put Frank Owens, Lamar Hall and Steve Gilbert in the midfield. They would then put out the well known combination of Matt Hall, Joseph Anderson and Larry Martinez, who we all expect to see a lot of this tournament. Mark Romero would be the man between the posts, picked over the young and maturing Lawrence Henderson.

The match however, seemed a bit rough at the start for the Kalactanian team. A Huayramarcan striker was able to weave through the Kalactanian defense and cash in for Huayramarca’s first goal of the match. Matt Hall would make a great pass up to his little brother Lamar Hall, but a shot from Lamar would bounce off the post before deflecting out of bounds. The Kalactanians would finally score their first goal of the match in the 41st minute, when striker Will Sanders hit a volley into the top corner after a cross from Frank Owens.

After halftime, the Kalactanian team got off to a very quick start in the second half, keeping the ball in the Huayramarcan zone was very easy for the first couple minutes, and they would go onto get their second goal of the match soon after. Jimmy McCarthy had a free kick from about 22 yards out, he sent a great bending shot, and it hit the post. Thomas Butler however, was quick to get over and tapped the ball in with the side of his foot. The Kalactanians were now up 2-1, but that wouldn’t last for so long.

The goal for the Huayramarcan team would come in the 61st minute, just 5 after the Kalactanians had scored the goal that out them in the lead. A Huayramarcan striker was able to send a pass into the 18 yard box, after being play by both sides for a few second, a Huayramarcan player stepped out of the 1-1 and kicked a ball over the shoulder of Mark Romero from 8 yards out. The game was tied, and it would stay that way for the rest of the match.

Our next match in the tournament will be against the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, who may prove to be our toughest test this entire tournament. They were once a world power, so it will be interesting to see how they play. They are the only team in our group that managed to qualify for the last World Cup, although we still don’t know if the leaving of Lionel Mah will hurt them too much to have a large impact. Guess we’ll just have to wait until next game.

Joker Turns Thief

Sean Patterick's suicidally bizarre squad selection technique may have its detractors, but it may have saved the side's bacon in the closing moments of yesterday's opening game.

Second best for much of the game, the Bulls nevertheless had managed to keep pace with a Sarzonian Stars team that the national team hasn't played against since cycle 29. Jake Campos's eleventh-minute header had been cancelled out by Luca Senna's deft finish ten minutes later. Campos's strength had created space for the diminutive Aguirre to dart in for number two, squeezing a finish through Zarragoitia's legs, but the Bulls levelled before half-time via the head of David Logan, meeting a corner kick at the back post, attempting to send the ball looping back into the six yard box for one of the strikers but accidentally sending it into the far corner. Logan would later claim he meant it.

Sarzonia again insisted on the lead six minutes after half-time, with Brady Reynolds curling a low free-kick inside the near post with Zarragoitia flat-footed, and it would be the blues, rather than the claret and greens, who would look most like taking all three points.

Enter young Fergus Coren.

Designated a 'Joker' by the boss, meaning he had to take to the field wearing a symbol of a jester's hat where his squad number would ordinarily be, Coren came on for Kuijken, who had seemed utterly out of his depth, and set about making a nuisance of himself.

The teenager had first come to prominence in Union Cathair's shock cup run the previous season, scoring in the final and earning a transfer to AC Izotz Zubia, for whom the striker has hardly played this past year. Nevertheless, Coren has showed promise, and it was his goal that salvaged a point for the Bulls at the death, inheriting a looping pass that Sarzonian full-back Charlie King had managed to lose in the evening sun, controlling on the chest and driving the ball low and hard past a Paolo Gomes who may well have been too busy thinking up insults to hurl at King to concentrate properly on the shot.

Audioslavia hung on for the draw.

The Unofficial World Championship - An Update

Fans of The Idiot Project may be aware that the Unofficial World Championship is being tracked. Champions Banija, awarded the Interim title after the demise of Free Republics, failed in their first defence of the trophy, losing to Equestrian States. Equestria therefore begin their fourth reign as Unofficial World Champions.

AOCAF LXII Group Stage 1 Matchday 1

Matchday 1: Valanora 4-5 Chromatika
Goals: Kuznetsov '12, Winge '28, Gainsbourg '31, '89, Haggard '49
Starting XI: Fillar; De Saint-Pierre - Slaven - Ingram - Adams; Winge - Zuniga (C) - Kuznetsov; Hauser; Haggard - Gainsbourg.
Substitutes: Anbient -> Slaven ('52), Antonucci -> Ingram ('65), Lin -> Winge ('78)
Starting off with a road trip to Valanora is rough.

Facing against the likes of Laborious Hawk, Amalie Nergård, and the like is no joke. Especially when facing that squad with a team of players making their first international start. Only Kateryna Zuniga, Vasiliy Marten Kuznetsov, Victoire De Saint-Pierre, Marietta Adams, and Renate Haggard have started prior.

Juxon Fillar had a rough day in goal, not being able to keep up with the Vanorian greatness; thankfully, the Chromatik front played without fear, and Alicia Gainsbourg - finally on the radar after being traded to the Graintfjall Premier League - put away the goal that gave the Chromatiks the narrow victory.

It is the first of six matchers in this phase, and there is still a lot to work on; however, the fact that this squad of youngsters stepped up and did not take things lying down is promising for the games ahead.

Next up, the young Anomalies will face Baker Park, who handled Flavovespia rather easily in the first matchday. They are expecting a bumper crowd in the Capitalizt Dome for the match, given the qualify of opponents that they will be facing.

Player of the Match: ST Alicia Gainsbourg (2 goals)

Gainsbourg, who was overlooked for a long time due to being overshadowed by players that she was playing alongside, is finally getting a moment in the limelight. After being traded to Molding in Graintfjall and making it to the squad, she gave the Anomalies the lead after the half hour mark, and also was the one to score the game winner off of a Vasiliy Kuznetsov cross in the eighty-ninth minutes.

"I always knew that this moment would come if I hung in there for long enough," mentioned an emotional Gainsbourg after the match, "I belong here with this team, and I am willing to prove that. This is the first good day of many, I assure you that the world will remember my name."

"She had a good first game," acknowledged Keira Andisori, calling in, "She has some work to do if she wants to make a statement to become a regular, but the way that this tournament is set up, she'll have some ample opportunities."

When asked if Valens and Landers should have not gone with a U-25 squad for this loaded edition, Andisori replied, "Adversity, when applied under specific circumstances, can lead to success. They may struggle, but we will be certain that they've been tested, at least."

As their journey in this tournament continues, people may ask more questions - at least the Chromatik management will be able to say that they thought about it.

II. Shut Down!

Chracter Profile: GK A'th'l Mik'o'si

A'th'l Mik'o'si, or "Athel" for short, is the youngest son of Glen'd'yl Mik'o'si and Tr'y'al Mik'o'si. Try'y'al is one of the highest ranking Orcs in the Unbidden Council, second only to Chief Trua Haligson; Glen'd'yl is a doctor working at Freedom's Altar General.

His oldest sister, Frehai Mik'o'si, married Jehaya Gorhuvn, one of the richest Orcish businesspeople in Yesopalitha. His older brother, Jor'gu'n Mik'o'si, owns Freedom's Altar United. As the youngest child by ten years, A'th'l was always given freedom to do what he wanted to, and he devoted his life to football.

Now that Unbidden races are being able to participate, A'th'l was called up to be the starting keeper.

He made the decision pay off in the 1-0 victory over Tioguldos, stopping all eight shots at goal.

As a team in League C, Yesopalitha will need to do very well to have any chance at playoffs, and this is a good first step.

A'th'l will be a key part all along the way.

K's Strike Out
By Rami Niblick in Emberton

IT has begun. An AOCAF Cup with a format worthy of a Liventian cricket tournament with, of all things, promotion and relegation. The aim in this first round is to not finish last in the group. To this end, Krytenia have started with a clean sheet and a point on the board. Sadly, though, there was precious little else to report in a game devoid of chances as the Dragons and Ko-oren spluttered to a goalless draw.

Krytenia may have a fresh piece of silverware in the cabinet, but that means little right now. This is a whole new tournament, and for the Dragons a chance to impress. Ko-oren, though, have often proved a difficult nut for Krytenia to crack, and so it proved again as the Dragonflies produced a defensive masterclass to stifle the triple threat of Apollo Peters, Neil Smith, and Alun Belmwr. It's long been a trademark of Ko-orenite play that keeping a clean sheet is the building block of their success, and to this end they were happy to allow Krytenia the lion's share of possession whilst ensuring they could do precious little with it. Cormac O'Neill came closest, whistling a free kick narrowly over after a contentious handball, but realistically neither side looked like scoring.

This will almost certainly change in their next game as the Dragons travel to Farfadillis in a game between two traditionally free-scoring sides. The Farves famously beat the men in sky blue and white on home soil in AOCAF Cup XLVIII, and the "Ronnie van Rijn Derby" should serve up an entertaining encounter in what is likely to be the Cup of Harmony champions' most difficult game in the group. Onward!

Netop start off tournament with a draw

In the debut match of the AOCAF, Netop traveled to Aji No Moto Stadium to take on Aji No Moto the technical favorites to win this League C group. What followed was a pretty even match that saw us walk out with a satisfactory draw at 1 goal a piece knowing we could have gotten 3 points yet content with the 1.

It was Netop who struck first in the 39th minute with Teddy Riggs our number 10a making a beautiful over the top of the defense to get the lofted through ball from #1776 Savannah Park our best player. Riggs got behind the defense with Aina Mazuka keeping him just onsides and we all Riggs isn't going to miss the one on one with the keeper and he finished it perfectly to give The Friends the 1-0 lead.

We almost made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute with Holder on the counter attack getting the ball down the line and dribble down to the baseline where he sent it backwards to a wide open #2020 Zoe Kinney who on the edge of the box just sent the one timer over the bar. Despite the fact that we had the best two chances so far Aji No Moto were still playing well and in the 72nd they would get a good chance and equalize.

Shigemi Siagyo would take it down the wing getting past Logan Diaz before launching a post to the far post where Jinpachi Santo would head it home for the easy goal. Why was Santo so open one might ask, well he made a brillant fake inside fooling Vaughan who bit hard before in the opposite direction to the far post easily beating Vaughan and getting there to receive the perfect cross before Howells could across his lines to save it.

Just like that we were tied with Aji No Moto at 1 and that's how it would finish. In the other match in our group Savigliane would defeat Ibixa by a score of 1-0 to take an early lead in our League C group. In our next match we will actually travle to take on Savigliane who won as noted above. Savigliane were actually in the 73rd Baptism of Fire just like us however we made it a round past them as they got eliminated in the round of 16. This is also their first AOCAF but as demonstrated by how similar our qualification efforts went it should be a good match.

Ibixa Suffer Painful Defeat

OUSEVALE, KRYTENIA - The Ibixa national team's AOCAF debut ended in heartbreak last night after a narrow defeat to fellow first-timers Savigliane. Les Gaseles had impressed for most of the game before a controversial decision and an unlucky bounce condemned them to a one-nil loss. For a country that is literally putting its faith in concrete and fair winds, it was hoped this competition would provide some avenue of a happy escape, but that hope now seems a little further away.

Playing their "home" match at Ousevale Juniors' compact Campbell Park ground, Ibixa struggled to create chances, with the Swans' back three more than capable of preventing anyone in a white shirt from doing anything threatening. Meanwhile, Bertrand Marchetti was pulling the strings in the Savigliane midfield and asqing questions of the Ibixan back four, who were similarly up to the task.

The game looked to be ending in a scoreless draw, with Ibixa unable to make any breakthrough of note, and Didac Marines able to deal with the few shots that came his way, until five minutes from the end. Llorenç Rado's tackle looked to be just outside the box, but the referee decided otherwise and pointed to the spot. Even then, the pain was not over. Amara Vatrican's penalty was well hit, and Marines dived the right way, but the ball bounced off the post and hit the prone goalkeeper, allowing a tap-in for Vatrican and the only goal of the game.

Aji no Moto await in Les Gaseles' second game. Hopefully fate will be on our side this time.
