Pripet Socialist Republic U-21/College All Stars
Image

Baseball is the national sport in the Pripet Socialist Republic. Everyone wants to become the next Sean Krivacha or another all-star baseball player. In the socialist nation, Baseball is absolutely huge. According to a survey more than half of the kids in the nation of 7 million play the sport. The PSR is a socialist-communist republic, that has laid-back democratic laws. Everyone gets an equal chance to succeed in the nation, as every person earns a fixed government salary that gets added on to their own. Baseball facilities are free to use, so kids always have a chance of succeeding at the sport.

Why we have the college team
The PSR Olympic Council announced that only amateur players will be allowed to play in international competition starting during WBC49. Therefore, the same team that played in the International Baseball Slam will be representing the national team in the WBC this cycle. WBC 50 will be in question, wether the team will play an amateur one, or a professional one.

Kriegiersien Nationalteam Baseball

Image

Thanks to the Batter Up! Baseball League Kriegiersien Baseball got more professional, but the teams winning and the players at the Top stayed the same, just earning even more money.
At the WBC 48 the Kriegiersien team played a decent tournament, even winning against later champion Nova Anglicana a few times. The Olympics were a setback and the next WBC was missed.
Now the team got a further chance to win the Trophy or at least a “medal”.
Only the manager and one player were replaced after the ongoing mismanagement. All players are human males, except the orc female Mordbruck, a former Cricket and Softball player.

Most players are from the capital, where, thanks to an initiative from a Sponsor, a giant Stadium had been built already years ago.

So the best players from the former KBL (Kriegiersien Baseball League), now Batter Up! Baseball League, have again to wear the Kriegiersien Olympic jerseys and swap their clubs caps (the only thing they are normally wearing at games, in the nation were nudity is mandatory) with theses ‘uniforms’.

As always playing in black.

Team Zwangzug, known as the "Zebras," were an early force in the WBC but have since faded from relevance. They competed consistently through WBC31, reappeared for 39 and 40, and then popped back again in 49. Happily, the 39-40 cycle saw Felix Wainwright break the alleged radio announcers' curse. This doesn't mean we'll necessarily have competent announcers, or any announcers at all; just that we could have some capable of holding down the job for multiple cycles. If we wanted to.

Like their distant ancestors, the Zebras are a defensively-minded team overall, eschewing many power hitters in favor of patience at the plate. Pitchers, likewise, tend more towards finesse than speed. There is no DH used at our home stadium, the Worm Hole (located in Spenson). They tend to be somewhat new-mathy with regards to not bunting, not stealing very much, etc.

Manager: Wenjie Liu (f). Claims to be affiliated with the FTC Secret Squirrels, but given that we can't even be bothered to scorinate our league, we can't even vouch for that. She knows what she's doing, though. We hope.

NEWMANISTAN ROCKETS

“Home of the Six-Time Champions!”

Let’s start with the technicalities:
My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my runscorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: No, my lineup is listed here. Use that!
Follow my pitching rotation: Yes. I will normally include upcoming pitchers in my prior RP.
Godmod scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: Yes, but only say they are hurt. I will determine the severity.
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Eject my players: Yes, on a basis of no more then one more then you eject from your own team.
Godmod other events: No
Use DH at home: Another “Hell no!” here

Additional Information that is very important to me:Newmanistan does not prescribe to the modern day concept of pitch counts determining how long a starting pitcher is kept in for. In fact, pitch counts are not even kept track of outside of curiosity sake. Such count is not displayed on the scoreboard, so if you want to track it for your pitcher, you must do it manually.

– If Newmanistan has given up 2 runs or less and WON, then the starting pitcher has gone all nine innings. No ifs, ands, or buts. This is true even if it would have been a save situation.

(Due to the international inexperience of our starting rotation and the vast experience of the bullpen, the team will not be as patient with starters as in the past. So, for WBC 50 and only WBC 50, this Rockets tradition is not carrying over as strictly, so for this tournament, I am “striking out” that information).

– Another Newmanistan trait is aggressive base stealing. Think back to the days of Vince Coleman and Ricky Henderson in their primes. This will always return! (I can’t help but laugh whenever a MLB announcer calls someone a threat to steal a base that has 20 steals for the year in September).

Head Coach: Jessica Hedstrom, 58, Southport Tigers
– Successfully led the Rockets to the final in her first year as coach of the Rockets. Do recall that she replaced the legendary Ashley Stevens prior to WBC 45, as Stevens retired. The entire coaching staff was turned over then, so they were brought back for WBC 46. Then the embarrassment happened. Due to the format of WBC 47, that Classic was considered a “throw out”, a decision that was justified with the Rockets strong performance in WBC 48, leading to a third place finish.
– The way the team performed in WBC 49 was seen with mixed emotions amongst many, and some of the voices calling for her to be let go began to be heard again, however, on the flip side, the results were seen as more acceptable when Hapilopper, who eliminated us, ended going all the way to final.

Hitting Coach: Katie Matthews, 49, Pocono City Capitals
– There are changes elsewhere on the staff, however, as Matthews enters her first tour of duty as the team’s hitting coach. She is particularly good getting the most power possible out of a batter.

Pitching Coach: Erika McIntyre, 46, Springfield Thoroughbreds
– Like Matthews, McIntyre takes over at the pitching coach for this team for the first time in WBC 50. She is highly regarded in the ENBL for her overall knowledge of game and working with different types of approaches to pitching.

STARTING ROTATION:
1A) Kelsie Carmichael, 27, RHP, Pocono City Capitals (#29)
– Drafted by Brighton out of college, the Capitals paid a huge price in terms of draft picks to acquire her. She did not immediately flourish prior to the trade, but did in her first year with Pocono City, impressing many. Made her debut in WBC 48 and was very impressive. Since then, her career has only continued to be on the upswing. Moved up from 1E to 1A in WBC 49 and seemed to handle it well. The nation looks upon her to have a great Classic this time around.

1B) Paige Norwood, 30, LHP, Springfield Thoroughbreds (#46)
– Had a strong rookie year with the North Charlotte Wildcats, impressing the coaching staff so much that she was made a part of this rotation. The timing was right for a player of her age to get this opportunity, and Paige was on the money in seizing the chance. She’s been good so far, but this will be the highest she has been in the rotation. Signed with Springfield in the off-season.

1C) Megan Reardon, 24, RHP, Olympia Gladiators (#25) (WBC Rookie)
– There is a lot of transition with the rotation, and the team is hoping that new stars can step up and shine. Reardon has been great in her early years of the ENBL, primarily getting outs with the fastball, but her ability to mix in the curve and slider keep batters guessing.

1D) Brianna Fitch, 23, LHP, Penthoria Bay Pirates (#24) (WBC Rookie)
– Hot commodity out of college, something that is actually rare for a player of her caliber to do, as typically players jump right to the pros out of high school. Brianna felt that by going to college, she could improve her draft position, and it worked wonders for her. She went #1 overall, though that meant the last place Pirates. She’ll be excited to pitch for a team that can give her run support. At least, she hopes they do.

1E) Julia Donaldson, 23, RHP, Tundra Falls Mariners (#22) (WBC Rookie)
– It is interesting that Fitch and Donaldson are the same age, but Donaldson has five years of experience in the ENBL, which allowed her to sign with the Mariners this past off season, and get out of Brighton, a team almost as bad as Penthoria Bay. Her arsenal of splitters and even an occasional knuckleball, mixed in with a 97 MPH fastball will frustrate opposing batters.

Bullpen:
Closer- Brittany Overton, 34, LHP, South Charlotte Condors (#30)
– Overton stepped in to the closer role with Condors, and was impressive thanks in part of her fastball and splitter combination. Up until now on the national team, she had been the set-up reliever. But became the closer in WBC 49 and did fairly well.

Set Up- Tori Fuller, 28, LHP, South Tier Seagulls (#36)
– Fuller made her debut as a short reliever in WBC for the national team, and now the closer for the Seagulls moves up the ladder in terms of the type of situation she will deal with here. Typically, set up relievers on this team are closers at home, so this is nothing unusual.

Kristen Phillips, 31, LHP, North Charlotte Wildcats (#31)
– The lone member of the entire of pitching staff that made her debut in WBC 46. The southpaw will be used in middle innings, but could be called upon first to join the rotation in the event of injuries to it.

Alyssa Wolcott, 37, RHP, Tundra Falls Mariners (#48)
– A middle reliever for the team that is a bit unusual for the roster because typically Stevens just uses transformed starters in these spots. Wolcott, however, is a middle reliever at home as well, and through an incredible work ethic which has paid off with her continued ability to be effective year in, year out, as she gets into her upper 30's. Has never relied on velocity, so that helps too.

Kathryn Riggins, 26, RHP, Tundra Falls Mariners (#32)
– Expect her to mainly be used as a middle reliever, and potentially the one who eats up “garbage innings”, if we are involved in them.

Amanda Stinnett, 25, LHP, Springfield Thoroughbreds (#38)
– Capable of pitching several innings if need be, but the preference will likely be to use her in short relief where a righty is useful. Has an excellent sinker-slider combination.

Crystal Madden, 24, LHP, Loudon Leopards (#28)
– Short-to-middle reliever that can be used in many different situations. Hedstrom may be looking to give her more looks as the campaign goes on if she puts up good numbers early as she is still a prospect in terms of this team.

STARTING LINEUP (Throws/Bats)
1) Brooke Sauter- CF, 26 (R/S), Centralia Firebirds (#1)
– After an impressive debut with the team in WBC 48, there is a lot of excitement to see her and Schuster back at it. Highly effective with getting on base, and then stealing at will. This means she will be just as willing to steal third as she is to steal second. Walking her can often become a three base walk.

2) Jenna Schuster- LF, 27 (R/S), Tundra Falls Mariners (#11)
– Just like Schuster will be what you have come to expect from the top spot, Schuster is our typical #2 hitter: a clone of our typical #1 hitter. If you’re unfamiliar with Newmanistan lineups, this is something that we are known for; two absolute speedsters being willing to run at will at the top of our lineup.

3) Mikayla Larson- SS (R/R), 32, Loudon Leopards (#4)
– The team is used to having great shortstops. Kayla Carey for so many years nailed down this position, and last year Kenzie Magee made the most of her one chance, now she too has moved on from international play. This is her third classic as a starter, and she comes off a .356 BA in the ENBL.

4) Lexi Burrows- 3B (R/S), 25, South Tier Seagulls (#14)
– Continuing to smack home runs all over the place in the ENBL, with many wondering if she will approach career league records by the time she is done. That is a long time coming, and consistency will have to be attained for a very long time, but the 25-year old is certainly opening eyes. She is also a free agent after this season, so will be hoping to get an enormous deal from a big money side, which South Tier is not.

5) Nicole Larkin- RF (L/S), 29, Putnam Lake Eagles (#7)
– Larkin made her debut on the roster in WBC 46, and has been part of the bench for the first two Classics. Now, in a year with significant changeover in the batting lineup, she looks to impress in this role. She is most known for her BA, as her .356 clip was the highest in the entire ENBL. That was enough to get her into this spot, but she has pop in her bat as well and should a welcome addition for Classics to come.

6) Sierra McKinley- 2B (R/R), 27, Jessicaville Millionaires (#26)
– McKinley is another who joins the roster for the first time after an impressive season in the ENBL saw her increase her BA from .294 as a rookie to .330 as a sophomore, and currently comes off a .344 season, but also hit .438 with runners in scoring position and two outs. She can hit the long ball to the tune of about 30 HR’s in a 162-game season, but also will steal bases. Not as aggressively as Sauter and Schuster, but don’t forget about her on the bases if you’re an opposing pitcher. Rumors have it that she might be trying to lure Lexi Burrows to sign with Jessicaville.

7) Chelsea Harlow- 1B (R/S), 25, Olympia Gladiators (#33)
– Another youngster in the lineup, Chelsea was a third round steal in the ENBL draft, impressing in her first season with Olympia, hitting .333 with 33 HR’s. RBI’s were five short as she only had 128, but is why she chose to wear #33 here. While her talent is undisputable, her maturity is questioned a little bit. That doesn’t mean work ethic, that’s great, but she’s been guilty of staring at HR’s far too long or some “arrogant” bat flips.

8) Nicole Hoskins- C (R/R), 31, Loudon Leopards (#45)
– Hoskins made her debut on the team in WBC 46, and like her fellow Nicole, spent the first two Classics as a backup before now finally getting a chance a start. She can hit the long ball, averaging 31 HR’s per season, and is great behind the plate. The knock on her is she can have extended hot/cold stretches, so if she starts cold instead of hot, a change could be made.

9) Pitcher

Bench: (Newmanistan has more bench players then most because our bullpen is smaller then average).
Samantha Murphy- C, 26 (#34)
Shannon Jackson- CI, 22 (#18)- (WBC Rookie)
Shelby Pritchett- CI, 30 (#19) - Will be the DH and hit ninth when needed.
Jessica McEwing- CI, 23 (#13) (WBC Rookie)
Taylor Rethke- MI, 31 (#3)
Kelsey Hawke- MI, 33 (#8)
Stephanie Vickers- OF, 25 (#10) (WBC Rookie)
Amy Coyle- OF, 27 (#12)
Ashley Sorenson- OF, 31 (#2) (Started in leadoff spot in WBC 46 and 47). Still a speedster.
Brianne McDowell- Utility, 26 (#21)

(OOC) Why The Rockets are All-Female: From time to time, I get asked this. When we signed up for our first Classic, WBC 7, we anticipated that we would not be good right away. Therefore, for that Classic, I used a team of all women to provide an IC reason for why we might not have been as good. Then, we made it all the way to the championship series. Based on that, I just figured I would stick with it. As it continued to work, why mess with it?

I'm legit scared of Donald Duck screaming "What's the big idea?" and arguing with the umpire before charging the mound.

Daskel National Baseball Team

Full team name: Daskel National Baseball Team
Trigramme: DKL
Nicknames: Daskies
Home Stadium: Daito Kyūjō (Daikyū)
Colors: co co co co

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my runscorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: No. Line-up selected here
Follow my pitching rotation: Follow pitcher rotation
Godmod scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: You may declare injuries. I will decide how bad it was or what body part was injured)
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Eject my players: Yes (Through in Daskelian baseball is extremely rare, as discipline is very much the norm in sports. Proceed with caution)
Godmod other events: Yes if it's exciting and credible
Use DH at home: No. DH is currently not used in Daskelian Baseball
Other: Daskel's baseball is based on a small ball technique, so expect bunts and stolen bases. Kishimoto has crazy good bunts, and he's quick as a chettah, so he can pull up the bunt and run quite well.

Team Overview

Team Daskel is back! Last year was big for the Daskies, after the U18 team secured the first international championship for the nation. Because of that, Adult's team coach An Takashi personally called Sakamoto Hiroshi, coach of the U18 team, to be their assistant coach for the 50th edition of the WBC. The roster is for the major part unchanged, with the promotion of Kanao Tōru to the rotation after his astounding performance in the last IBS. The big loss for the team is Shintaro Nobuhiro, who sustained an injury last year and had many complications during the last DPY Season. Eidome took the mask as the starter while An called Shibaike Takahiro, starting catcher of Kozan Diggers, to be the team's back-up. In words of An, even with Eidome as the official starter, both catchers will play a fair amount of games this tournament.

The Daskies play in the Daito Kyūjō, one of the biggest and oldest stadiums in the country. the "Daikyū" has a capacity of 60.000 attendants. Its trademark feature is the all-dirt infield.

Baseball in Daskel

Baseball is one of the most dominants sports in Daskel. However, baseball history didn't start with it's professionalization, but with a rapidly developing high school baseball federation. Baseball in Daskel started around 1909, when the sport arrived to the coasts of Kuji Bay. Since it's insertion, it spread through every prefecture of Daskel, creating a vibrant culture of colors, sounds and, of course, loads of baseball. The natural course of the activity lead to the creation of the "Federation of Daskelian High School Baseball", who watch over pesky head coaches, rough kiddos, and tiger parents who strive to see their children turn into the next professional baseball phenomenon.

The National Tournament is held every year in November, start of the Daskelian Summer. In that tournament, 30 schools teams battle in the burning sun, not only defending the pride of their high school, but also the pride of their entire prefecture. It's usual occurrence that other prefecture teams cheer for their final representative, in and out the stadium.

One big custom of Daskelian baseball is to bow in front of opponents before and after the game, and we'll absolutely see that in this tournament. Watch out for daskelian fans! They know how to make a good atmosphere, bringing music and entire brass bands to the stand.

Daskel's WBC History

Falisiand International Baseball Roster

Postby Falisiand » Tue Nov 03, 2020 8:38 pm

Falisiand will participate in its 2nd ever WBC, with their goals being more ambitous after not making it to the playoffs.

Lineup
C: Ryan Grantham (The first pick in the FBA Draft has not dissapointed at all playing up to expectations, with till having elite contact and speed, but upping up in the power department with 7 HRs)
1B: Kodey Kenton (The 2nd overall pick though has been a guaranteed better player having improved so much during the FBA and WBC, he's the most likely to win ROY with improvement to his contact and leading the lead in HRs so far with 21 of his 68 hits so far being HRs while raking a .301 avg, he's also the MVP leader)
RF: Ciaran Krueger (Ciaran Krueger may be a dark horse for the FBA MVP race, even though he's not a top 4, he's still having an all-star year, with his contact ability still being one of the best in the league, and his power being the same)
SS: Leo Robles (the 3rd overall pick in the draft has let his talent lead him here in this position, he's still a solid top 3 rookie with the other 2 top rookies being here with him, he excels in speed, power and contact, while still being decent in fielding, his stats holding up to get him a possible all-star bid in his first year along with Gratham and Kenton)
CF: Richard Mcbride (The reigning FBA MVP might have his title in trouble after up and coming superstar Kodey Kenton has taken first place in the MVP race with him being in 2nd, but not far behind, he is 2nd in home runs with 16 but leads the league in hits and batting avg with 102 hits and a .357 batting avg)
2B: Amaan Pruitt (The man who is in 3rd place in the MVP race, he's 3rd place in all of the league stats having 14 HR, 88 hits and .300 avg, he's still the team captain of the Libertad Gamers and is someone to watch out for)
LF: Warren Mathews ( The first of the few from the IBS, Warren Mathews was a perfect fit after Aidan Singleton came down with a torn ligament during the FBA season (we wish him well), his power is still good, with his contact developing, he's becoming more and more like Amaan Pruitt)
3B: Mesa English (Mesa English did an amazing job defensively in IBS, which got him here in the first place, even though he's not as defensively good as Leroy Pratt, he is a much better hitter)
DH: Mason Mckinney (The leadoff hitter of the IBS U22 team is back as a DH of the WBC team, like Mesa English, his performance in IBS getting him here, but will those skills pass on)

Starting Rotation
RHP: Kyron Burnett (Kyron Burnett has gotten better since the last time we've seen him, he still throws a fastball that can go from 98-101 MPH, a 91 MPH slider, a 85 MPH curveball and a 89 MPH change up, but his stanima has gotten better and he looks to have an all-star bid in the near future)
RHP: Xerxes Anscom (Xerxes has developed amazingly on Wendleton, turning into one of the star pitchers of the FBA, he now throws a 91 MPH fastball, a 82 MPH nasty slider, a 76 MPH 12-6 Curveball, and an 87 MPH sinker, while still being a masterful control pitcher)
LHP: Rufus Hammond (One of the better pitchers of the last WBC, Rufus has stayed a consistent pitcher while still throwing a 94 MPH running fastball, a 93 MPH Cutter, a 86 MPH slider, and a 77 MPH curveball)
LHP:Khalid Pearson (It hasn't been a while since we've seen Pearson, but lets still go over his skill set, he's still a velocity pitcher who throws a, 96-98 mph fastball, 86-89 mph slider, 81-90 mph vulcan changeup, 92-94 mph cutter)
RHP: Chester Mckinney (Teh pitcher that sent the U22s to IBS playoffs, he's an excellent groundball pitcher, who throws a 89-92 mph fastball, 72-76 mph slider, 83-86 mph cutter, 49-51 mph eephus, an yes he is Mason Mckinney's brother)

Bullpen

RHP: Marvin Gill ( he's stillclutch reliever, he will be the closer of this team, he still throws a 99-103 MPH fastball, a 92 MPH slider, and a 87 MPH changeup)
RHP: Jamal Meadows (Mid relief pitcher in IBS to setup in WBC,he throws a 88-90 mph fastball, 77-81 mph slider, 84- 87 mph cutter)
RHP: Kieron Blackburn (the 63rd overall pick is defying expectations and a ground ball pitcher who throws a 89-91 MPH fastball, a 79 MPH slider and a 69-72 MPH curveball)
LHP: 32 Frankie Goodwin ( a returner from WBC 49, he will be the other setup reliever and if you don't know, he's a velocity pitcher, he throws a 98 MPH four seam, a 94 MPH two seam, and a 86 MPH slider)
LHP: Baron Colbert (The 88th overall pick and former IBS reliever has also done pretty, being a velocity pitcher who still throws a 97 MPH fastball, 87 MPH slider, 80 MPH curveball, 82 MPH changeup)
SP: Logan Vinson ( has turned better in the FBA being one of the better closers in the Association, he throws a 92 MPH fastball, 66-74 MPH knuckleball, an 86 MPH circle changeup, and a 90 MPH gyroball, he's still unpredictable)

Stadium
After a descision with the comitee and with permisson, the Falisiand Bison will be playing in Holdover Fishing Park, with a capacity of 37,895-47,264, the Home of the Anderson Hokies

Hampton Island Golden Bears

New Bears?: First, let me begin by saying that Midnight is no longer part of the team. His service will be missed, but he is older and slower now. He can’t catch up to many pitches now, and it has been decided that it is best to let him live out his life in peace. (Though he is still kept on the land owned by the stadium CEO). You may remember that in World Baseball Classic 48, we began breeding Midnight to females much like racehorse in hoping that he will produce some cubs that have his ability to play baseball. They would have been too young in the last Classic, but now, we are proud to debut some new, younger bears to the lineup.

These bears will not act up in the game and attack your players. They are well fed prior to the game, but are trained well enough to focus on the game like any of the human players. They may growl loudly, though, if angered. (Intentionally walking them can cause that).

OOC: I hope to be more active during this Classic then I was in the last one, so be expecting the CEO to look to sell cubs of Midnight’s, perhaps some that could play a little baseball. Mostly, though, they will be normal bears who act like normal bears but with the distinction of being able to say that they are by Midnight.

Manager: John Morton, 72 (8th year)

Lineup:
1) Denny Ramirez- 28- LF (Speedy player and consistent contact hitter. He’s a little annoyed that he has to move from CF for Nimble, though.)
2) Thunder, 3,- RF (Powerful, but not as quick. Good contact ability for a bear)
3) Phillip Greene- 1B- 26 (Highly arrogant and money obsessed, but also an all-around threat and the reigning batting champion in the nation)
4) Shadow, 3,- DH (Has no defensive instincts, so this is best).
5) Mario Cortez, 29- 3B (All-around player, excellent with runners in scoring position. Top power on team for a human.)
6) Nimble, 3,- CF (Fleet of foot, very agile, and of course, can hit it far).
7) Victor McClelland- 27- SS (Excellent range, good average hitter, not much power)
8) Kylie Billings, 24- 2B (Not a publicity stunt. She can play the game as good as a woman from any other nation who brings females).
9) Danny Hackerbee, 30- C (Great overall contact hitter, works long pitch counts)

Note that these bears are younger and inexperienced, so are more prone to strikeouts or other miscues during this Classic then they will be in the future. Though like Midnight, when they do connect, it can go a real long way.

Bench:
1) Nick Pierson, 27- C
2) Kyle Hennessey, 26- 1B, 3B
3) Michael Stefano, 27- 1B, 3B, OF
4) Shane Carinci, 29- OF
5) Jerome Jurdeen- 32, 2B, SS
6) Scott Van Allen- 34, 2B, SS

Rotation:
1) Dean Douglas, 34 (RHP)- Good fastball but nasty breaking pitches
2) Cory Clover, 31 (LHP)- Long time member of team, nasty curveball. Doesn’t get along with Sanfredi
3) Curtis Sanfredi, 30 (RHP)- Very arrogant, and a wicked curveball. Hates Clover, but deals with him on the team.
4) Justin Mohlander, 27 (LHP)- Hard thrower, if he was more consistent, he would be the ace of the staff.
5) Felipe Aguilera, 24 (RHP)- Works pitch speed very well, and has a good slider.

Bullpen:
1) Shawn Levinson, 30 (RHP)- Middle/Long Relief
2) Gabriel Wright, 31 (LHP)- Middle/Long relief
3) Byron Shannon, 29 (LHP)- Middle relief
4) Bryan Prater, 34 (RHP)- Short relief
5) Trevor Howard, 22 (LHP)- Short relief
6) Timothy Werth, 23 (LHP)- Set-up
7) Martin Lemieux, 25 (RHP)- Closer

Bardney National Base Ball Team

Base Ball in Bardney

Bardney plays an earlier form of the game of baseball. The dimensions are mostly the same, but the rules are a little different.

The pitching mound is 50 feet away, not 60 feet, 6 inches, and pitching cannot be overhand. This is not to imply that pitching looks like slow pitch softball, but only that pitchers cannot throw overhand. An underhand delivery or a sidearm delivery is common. Pitchers are allowed and do put movement on the ball and throw with some speed.

The number of called balls for a walk is 5, and the number of called strikes for a strikeout is 4 (if the batter swings and misses at the third strike, then that is a strikeout, i.e the batter cannot "strike out looking" on the third strike). There is no official strike zone, instead, it is up to the discretion of the umpire to call a strike or ball. Foul balls do not count as strikes.

Catchers typically wear gloves, but do not wear other protective equipment.

Foul balls caught on one bounce are considered outs, and gloves are not typically used.

A ball that bounces over the fence on one bounce, in modern baseball considered a "Ground rule double", is a home run.

In terms of the fan experience, most tickets are SRO and beer is cheap.

There are no uniform numbers.

How is Bardney going to compete with modern teams?

Players have been practicing under the international rules. They are getting used to pitching from 60 feet out and wearing gloves. They have hired some rogue international ballplayers to pitch to them overhand and at the speeds they will be seeing.

As for the pitchers, expect submarine, sidearm, or perhaps even low three-quarters releases with fastballs ranging from the 77-84 range. Also expect curves, sinkers, screwballs, and "rising" fastballs. Pitchers have been listed with their typical deliveries, but they can and will change deliveries if needed. Please also note that it is not the custom of Bardney catchers to immediately throw out balls that have been scuffed in some way. Bardney catchers, pitchers, and position players may even try to intentionally scuff the ball or rub some dirt on it to obtain extra movement. It is up to your discretion as to how much you want to RP Bardney players trying to skirt the rules around the ball and whether or not they are successful. Bardney players, however, have been warned strictly against the spitball, so that shouldn't be an issue.

As for the hitters, they don't have a huge amount of raw power, but they can hit home runs, since they'll be facing faster pitching than normal. But this isn't a team of bunters, either. They will try to hit as many line drives as they can, steal when they can, and take the extra base when they can.

Please also expect the stadiums you play in to be not always kept in perfect condition; the grass might be clipped too short or too long, or the basepaths might be too soft or too hard, or the dimensions might be a bit odd, or there might be too much foul ground for your liking. Some of this is just the way it is, based on how stadiums were constructed. Some of it is gamesmanship by the groundskeepers; it's up to your discretion how much you want to RP this affecting your team.

Will there be different rules when I play in Bardney?

No. Bardney will play by current WBC international rules. They just may play with a different style.

Sevendian roster for WBC50

What is a Sevendia?
Good question. Sevendia is a small, seven shaped country in Sonnel. At about 777,777 inhabitants, it isn’t a big or relevant nation. This is the first time Sevendia joins international sports, possibly because international sports don’t involve enough sevens to their liking. Everything is 7 in Sevendia. This is not an over exaggeration.

This is a meme puppet. Do whatever floats your boat. Kill ‘em, ‘slice em, dice ‘em, make them a farmer in remote Ko-oren, I don’t care. Go have some fun. (And no DH rule for this nation.)

Roster:

Coaching staff:
Seven-Seven Seventy-Seven (49)
The coach with the admittedly non-ideal name is responsible for all of the team. There are no other coaches. Due to the complexity of his name, he is mostly referenced as “91”. He is also the father of Sejal-Seven, the team’s shortstop.

Pitchers:
SP1 Sebastian-Seven Rottesven (30, L)
SP2 Sean-Seven Proven (29, R)
SP3 Seamus-Seven Muggeven (24, R)
SP4 Seth-Seven Zouven (34, R)
RP1 Serge-Seven Sjodeven (35, R)
RP2 Sefton-Seven Dragonven (24, S)
RP3 Selvin-Seven Iöderhven (21, S)
RP4 Seward-Seven Steakeven (40, R)
In Sevendia, pitchers are always male. None of them are any good. Just throw them around how it is convenient for you.

Field players:
C Sela-Seven Loveveven (24, R) (this is spelled correctly (all the names are, trust me))
1B Sera-Seven Poven (32, R)
2B Seira-Seven Hulven (18, L)
SS Sejal-Seven Seventy-seven (30, R)
3B Selin-Seven Uhlmeven (32, S)
LF Seanna-Seven Joudlven (30, R)
CF Selena-Seven Gomeven (21, S)
RF Semina-Seven Ölddrawven (34, R)
Field players are always female in Sevendia. This is the batting lineup, pitcher at the end. If they are forced to play with a DH, the pitcher does that anyway.

Reserves:
C Selvia-Seven Ähven (20, L)
IF Sebrina-Seven Juuven (31, L)
OF Serlina-Seven Sulsven (45, R)
U Selestine-Seven Donewithven (49, R)

Things you probably should know

All (adult) people in Sevendia are seven foot. Always.
In every sentence, people currently being in Sevendia are required by law to use all the letters of the word seven (e, n, s, v) in every sentence they say.
The answer is always seven. No matter the question.
Everything that could theoretically be seven-shaped is seven-shaped.
Everything that can’t be seven-shaped is also seven-shaped.
All objects are required to have a 7 on them, including everything.
Seven.

The Stadium

Seven (77,777)
Building a stadium of those proportions was a very bad idea. For most games, the stadium isn’t remotely close to being full. Seven, located in the capital (Seven) will host all of the games. This stadium is also built in the shape of a seven, with the short side behind the outfield and the long side going along the side of the field, about up to third base.

Good luck, and I’m sorry.

The temptation any time a team falls short of winning its sport's ultimate prize is to carefully evaluate the team and decide whether to make significant changes to address weaknesses or largely stand pat.

The Sarzonian national football team made a couple of minor changes to their squad for the upcoming AOCAF, but they feel radical with Paolo Gomes starting at goalkeeper instead of Carlton Sandt and Russ Howard being removed from the team. However, the Sarzonian national baseball team's changes feel cosmetic by comparison.

The biggest change for Sarzonia manager Geoff Yancey's unit is the team's opening day starter, as hard throwing lefty Jeff Parrish displaces Mark Conroy as the team's No. 1 starter. Conroy slides down to the No. 2 spot previously occupied by Uriel Jimenez, who is no longer on the team. Lefthander Alton Long takes over as the fifth starter for the Stars, who reached the top 10 in the world rankings after only two World Baseball Classics.

"We improved by one match from our previous Classic, even though we finished second in our group," Yancey said. "We felt our team is pretty strong as constructed and felt our changes really only needed to enhance what we already had." To wit: Even though the Stars were the ninth seeds and facing group winners and multi-sport rivals Delaclava, the Stars beat the Phoenix three games to two with a dramatic three-run homer by pinch hitter Cody Frazier providing the critical blow.

Now, the Stars will return to the diamond without an opportunity to rekindle that rivalry as Delaclava have not sent a team to this World Baseball Classic. It's an absence Conroy in particular feels.

"When you have a rivalry like that, even though it's our friens off the pitch, you get especially motivated to play against them," he said. "You want to beat the shit out of them, but then hang out with them afterward. We're gonna miss that."

With the group draw taking place tomorrow, the possibility of rekindling another such rivalry remains as Banija are among the 78 teams competing in the 50th edition of the World Baseball Classic. Frazier said the team considered the Sarzonia-Banija rivalry "nearly on-par" with Stars-Phoenixes, but said it was still premature to say it was the same.

"Our rivalry with [Delaclava] stems from how close we are as neighbours, and how eerily similar our countries are," Frazier said. "With a lot of the teams we play against, only our most language-obsessed people might be able to pick up a difference in accents among opponents. With Delaclava, I can tell you in one sentence which province someone from Delaclava is from."

Valanora roster for WBC 50

The Eternal Empire of Valanora consists of the mainland of Valanora, the island state of Vyinta, the island of Capri, the nomadic tribes of the Dark Templara, as well as the nation of Sabine and Caddonia.

Home Stadium
Taladicus Park (22,000)
On the outskirts of Mar Sara, this field is actually part of the Mara Sara Tech campus and athletics installation. It has a short right field fence that left handed batters like as several pop flys can turn into home runs with enough lift, though the left field is strangely deep in comparison.

Roster

Starting Pitchers
1. LHP Einar Lindberg, age 28 - Knuckleballer whose unusual style usually perplexes opponents
2. LHP Livia Lundin, age 23 (F) - Superb changeup, not afraid to intentionally walk batters for better matchups.
3. RHP Eva Hansson, age 27 (F) - Excellent split fastball, has a tendency to hit batters who crowd the plate
4. RHP Roger Strömberg, age 27 - Sidearmer with good but not great changeup and sinker
5. LHP Eric Sundström, age 20 - Devastating curveball but inconsistent, gives up a lot of home runs on bad days.

Relief Pitchers
MR RHP Yasmine Nyström, age 28 (F) - Deceptively good fastball and sinker, will brush batters hanging over the plate.
MR LHP Edwin Andersson, age 27 - Sidearmer with a good changeup, sinker, and curveball, but nothing that is excellent.
MR LHP Alexandra Sjöberg, age 27 (F) - Overpowering fastball and sneakily good changeup to keep batters off guard.
SR RHP Mirjam Sandberg, age 26 (F) - Large arching curveball that always seems to hit the corners.
SR LHP Marco Olofsson, age 21 - Two seam fastball that is hard to catch up to, hard even for the catchers to keep in front of them.
SU RHP Jesper Bengtsson, age 24 - A sinker specialist with good control.
CL LHP Caspar Axelsson, age 25 - The closing ghost. If he is on, the game is over.

Groundball Day, Part 1

Postby Drawkland » Wed Nov 04, 2020 7:25 pm

Groundball Day

beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbee-

Travis smacked at his phone on the bedside table. Beside him, his girlfriend Tori stirred under the covers and sat up sleepily. The hotel bed, while high quality, wasn't the same as the memory foam mattress they had back home in Drawkland.

"Did you sleep alright?" Travis asked with a yawn, turning to look at Tori.

"Yes, I slept great!" she said, with no small amount of sarcasm in her voice. She looked like she'd been woken up by being hit by a truck. She never was the prettiest sleeper, but that's not exactly why Travis had planned to marry her. She was undoubtedly the love of his life. They did everything together. Ever since they met in college, they instantly clicked. It definitely helped that she shared a love of sports with him. It was a no-brainer, as they'd both saved up enough money from their fresh-off-from-college jobs, that they'd be going to the WBC 41 playoffs. Drawkland was finally good in baseball again.

They'd arrived in Canterlot a day before Game 1 of the Round of 16. The series with Scootalove City promised to be an exciting one, the Unicorns had been a perennial playoff contender ever since their second cycle and seemed to improve every coming Classic. Drawkland, on the other hand, was on the rebound from a previously awful 2 cycles. If there was a time to win, it was now, no doubt about it.

"Tomorrow, we're sleeping in. I don't care. If I wake up to an alarm tomorrow morning there will be hell to pay," Tori said seemingly serious, before cracking a smile. The couple laughed, and Tori finished, "Just kidding. Seriously though, let's sleep in. There's no reason to get up early tomorrow or anything."

"I agree," Travis nodded, "After all, it's not like we'll be having to catch a flight, considering that we'll be BEATING Scootalove City tonight and staying in Equestrian States another week for the quarterfinals!" he added with a mocking fist pump.

"Hell yeahhhh," Tori responded with a joking fist pump of her own before stifling another yawn, "Let's get breakfast. I need some coffee STAT."

A few minutes later, the two were in the lobby of the hotel getting their share of a nice continental breakfast. As Tori stood in line in front of him, Travis looked at her and smiled. He was going to propose tonight. Probably, anyway. He'd had two plans in the prior months to propose to her, but chickened out last second. They'd been dating for 4 years already. His parents, her parents, their friends, everybody expected him to tie the knot and finally get a wedding on the way. But for some reason, he could never get over the hump and onto his knee. Another time, he kept saying, It'll present itself.

Winning their first playoff series ever would be a big enough occasion to give him the confidence and adrenaline enough to force himself to do it. It's not that he didn't want to, not at all. He loved this girl with all his heart. He just ... couldn't do it. When he confided in his friend Jason about it, Jason said he was being "so unclutch about it." Perhaps a little silly and a forced sports reference, but it was damn true.

I would give up anything to give myself the courage to just do it, he sullenly thought to himself as he shoveled a bagel onto his plate. He then got a really weird chill, shivering and nearly dropping all his food on the ground. Tori looked back at him. "You alright there Trav?" she asked with a cheeky smile.

"Y-yeah, of course," he said quickly, looking back at her then pointing at a table a few feet away, "Let's sit down, shall we, my lady?" he puts on a silly posh accent.

"Don't mind if I do, sire," she replied with a similarly posh accent.

After enjoying breakfast, a late lunch with some light beverages, and a bit of half-assed sightseeing (they'd already seen most of the sights of Canterlot), the sun began to sink towards the horizon. The sky turned beautiful shades of pink and orange and red, and Royal Canterlot Stadium began to fill up with fans. A larger-than-usual amount of Drawkian baseball fans were present. This was the first time they'd ever been this close to winning a playoff series, after a clutch 2 straight elimination game wins to force a Game 5. Travis and Tori made their way to their seats in the right field stands. Sure, it wasn't the best way to view the game, but hey, they were cheap. Plus, that's where most of the Drawkian fans were sitting anyway.

After the pregame festivities, the game began. Slowly, it progressed, and boy was it progressing perfectly. By the bottom of the eighth Drawkland had a 10-2 lead over Scootalove City, and the Drawkian crowd could not be any more hyped. Travis and Tori had been eating up the game, eating up popcorn, and eating up each others' company for the entire 3 hours they were in their seats. Stuart Nova of Scootalove City took his at bat, an easy 4-3 out to end the 8th inning. The Drawkian crowd came out in raucous cheers. They were just 1 inning away from finally doing it.

"This might be the greatest night of my life," Travis said to Tori, his arm around her shoulder, "Drawkland's winning 10-3 in the most dominant fashion possible, it's a beautiful warm night in the prettiest stadium I've ever been to, and I'm spending it all with the love of my life."

"I have a way your night could get even better," Tori said with an exaggerated wink, and Travis chuckled and blushed slightly.

"I certainly wouldn't object to that."

The top of the ninth inning went very quickly. It was an easy three up, three down inning for the Unicorns of Scootalove City. As the Base Corps center fielder Rachel Atlink shot a pop fly to the first baseman for the third out, Tori turned over to Travis with a wrinkled expression.

"That kinda sucked. Three up three down in the top of the ninth? Talk about losing our momentum."

"Come on Tori, we're up 7 going into the bottom of the ninth! Has anybody ever scored 7th in the bottom of the ninth in an actually important game?"

At that point, the random man sitting on the other side of Travis leaned in and interrupted, "The last time a comeback that large happened was Maklohi Vai getting 7 runs in the 9th inning to beat St. Saratoga, and that was years and years ago."

Despite the awkwardness of the man clearly eavesdropping, Travis still nodded, "See, Tor? Nothing to worry about. We're gonna be having victory drinks tonight!"

Scootalove City didn't seem to want to die that quickly, though. The first two batters for the Unicorns singled on base, and the third got a grounder to deep right field to bat them in. The one after him got a base hit, and the very next batter shot one into deep left for a three-run home run. The next two batters, of course, got grounders to the shallow outfield to place them on first and second.

"This is officially not funny!" Tori said with a slight element of alarm in her voice, despite her best efforts to remain jovial about it. Over the years, Travis had noticed she always became a little too invested in games towards the end. Taking it a little too seriously, perhaps. Travis didn't want this to ruin the night for her. Even if Drawkland lost, which was inconceivable, he wanted this to be a special night for her. He instinctively put his hand on the outside of his jacket. Hidden on an inside pocket was the small black box with an engagement ring in it. He wasn't going to pop the question at this game, surely not. He'd have to do it afterwards! No matter the result, he just needed the right words, or ... something ... right? Surely the opportunity would present itself. He snapped himself back to the present.

"Come on, it's not that bad. There's a double play happening right here, I guarantee it."

"You sure? We have no outs and they're a sacrifice fly away from tying this up. Don't even make me think about them hitting a walk-off right here!"

"Relax, relax, sweetie. Watch this guy. Ground out. Baby steps, we got this."

Sure enough, it happened. John Avidan took a slider from Franklin Bell and caught the edge of it. The ball shot out towards shortstop. For a brief nanosecond, it looked to everyone in the stadium that it was about to slide out into left. Somebody would score. There'd be another in scoring position. The game was about to unravel. But lo and behold, the lanky frame of Serena Hearns stretched out to backhand catch the ball. Right next to her was an unsuspecting Alex Ponches, who was tagged out before they could even register the fact that the ball was not currently sliding through outfield grass at that moment. Serena was starting to fall down from momentum, but miraculously tossed the ball from glove to hand and flung it over her shoulder to a waiting Roger Madison at second base. Madison barely got there on time, but got his foot down for the force out before turning and firing the ball as hard as he could at the glove of Arthur Ware. The hopes of millions watched the ball zing through the air towards first base.

Crack.

Just like that, the triple play was complete. Scootalove City was defeated. Arthur Ware raised his glove in the air triumphantly. The Base Corps benches emptied as the Drawkians in attendance roared. Drawkland, the Base Corps, had finally done it. On their way to their first WBC quarterfinal ever. It only took 20 seconds before ambitious fans decided to hop the fences and bum rush the field. It was a glorious triumph. Even the outfield seats, with the high wall between them and the ground, weren't adverse to being hurdled. As the seats emptied in front of them, Travis looked at Tori and motioned forward. She nodded without a word, and they both hopped over the seats and slid off the wall and onto the outfield grass at Royal Canterlot Stadium.

They were surrounded by tons of people. Travis felt exhilarated. He looked down at his side and looked at the woman he loved. She was ecstatic. Jubilant in the moment. He could feel her pure joy in his heart. She looked up at him, and they shared a kiss. Beautiful, in the moment. Travis suddenly felt the courage begin to bubble in him. He reached into his jacket pocket, poking around to find the precious box. He was going to do it.

"Will all fans please exit the playing field area immediately. All fans on the playing field, please exit immediately!" the loudspeakers suddenly boomed. Travis was shocked out of his moment, and looked around to see what was happening. His hand left his jacket pocket. Tori looked around as well, oblivious to what Travis had been moments away from doing.

Travis nervously smiled and huffed, "I guess we should probably get going huh?"

Tori smiled back at him, still as joyous as ever, "Yeah, let's go. I wonder if they have any Drawkland Quarterfinalist shirts for sale out there already, huh?"

"If I get you one will you let me take it off of you later tonight?" Travis asked with a ridiculous wink of his own.

"To quote somebody I'm fond of, 'I certainly would not object to that!'" Tori replied, and the two hopped up into an infield aisle to make their way out of the stadium.

Drawkland 0 2 0 3 1 3 1 0 0 10
Scootalove City 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 1 5 8
Drawkland wins 3-2

The two grabbed a pizza from a nearby late-hour local pizza joint and headed back to their hotel room. They finished their dinner and stayed up for another hour until they were sufficiently exhausted, and then they fell asleep in each other's arms.

"I can't wait to sleep in tomorrow," Tori whispered, nearly half asleep.

"I'll have you know I haven't even touched my phone's alarm app since I turned it off this morning," Travis murmured back, before they drifted off to sleep. Little did they know that they would not be getting the sleep they expected the next morning.

An interview, featuring Leonardo Harrison and Nancy Fisk of the Ranorian Sports Network

“So, Leonardo Harrison, you had an incredible season, wow. A third championship in eight seasons, your pacing a lot of the all-timers for the Federation. Let’s start with that four hundred plus batting of yours! How did you manage to pull that off?” Ever poised, Fisk smiled throughout her questioning, attentive to the young star.

“Well, honestly, this international competition that’s coming up? It helped a lot.” Harrison reached for a glass of water despite being in the early going of the show, “The Classic is a higher level of competition than the domestic leagues. It’s like bumping the difficulty down in a video game.”

Nancy nodded, “One could certainly say that. The best pitcher Ranoria’s ever produced is likely Tommy Verona, and he seems happy as can be to be playing in Quebec.”

“Tommy’s awesome, yeah. Guy could give me fits.” Harrison set the cup back down, “But we’ve got some really good players in the Federation, enough that we were able to make a bit of noise near the end last season.”

“To that point,” Fisk glanced down at her notes, “Your Maestros swept every team in the playoff, until the championship. Nicholas Lux seemed to give you all you wanted and more as a pitcher or a batter. Seems like he’s always just a step behind you, though. Has Lux showed any signs of closing that narrow gap between the two of you?

Harrison held out his hands with a chuckle, “I’ll get to that. But first, I’ve got to rave about this guy a little bit.”

"The amazing thing about Nicholas is that he's just never, and I do mean never, shaken," Harrison declared, sighing wistfully before he continued.

"Look, a lot of guys can pretend they've got their stuff all under control, especially during the playoffs. Professional athletes, particularly when addressing the public, are pretty good at acting that way. But with Nicholas, I really believe that it’s all real. Nothing ever seems to get to him, no matter what the situation. You have to think, in that last series, we had his Sluggers down two games to none, and then three to one, and he still kept fighting his way back to force that game seven. Honestly, I don’t think he ever doubted, until that final out, that he was going to lose this championship."

"It's noteworthy to point out," Nancy chimed in, "Nicholas Lux has a lot of fans. His salary from the Federation is paltry compared to the supplements, clothing brands, and sports drinks companies that have signed him to endorsement deals. You earn a good bit from endorsements as well, but you don’t seem to be quite as popular, not as adept as he is with his outreach. As such, he is constantly fielding calls, which he likely filters through an agent, for commercials and such. Do you think this is a distraction to the team, or for him, personally?"

Leonardo brought a hand to his chest, Nancy laughing as he objected, “Not as popular? I’m wounded!” He shook his head though, getting serious again, "I'll give you this: it takes one hell of a cool head to get through all of that. Playing in Ranoria City, some people would fold under that sort of a burden, that much attention. If you remember Thorn Davis's recent outburst, that's one example of that city's effect on people. But even with all that, Nicholas Lux, who might be the best baseball player in the country, never falters."

"Once he arrives at the facility, always early mind you, he is all baseball. Nothing else even gets a chance to cross his mind," Harrison said. "As a teammate, you can't help but notice that sort of thing. Look, he's never come out and said it, but we all understand, clear as day, the message. 'This comes first.' I love that stuff. I’m a grinder, I put in the extra work, but he almost seems to set the expectation that everyone better be doing that."

"What really gets me though," Harrison continued, "is that he has been criticized by some people, some of it because of the endorsements, I guess people think you can’t be totally focused if you have stuff like that going on. But I already covered that, the dude puts the blinders on once it’s go time. And he never lets that sort of garbage get to him though, he's laser-focused. He knows what he wants to do and hasn't wavered. And like I said, that's Nicholas—totally focused. He's a big reason that we have a shot to make a splash this year in the Classic, it's all because of Nicholas. He's every bit the ball player I am now, and, can I let you in on a little secret?"

Harrison leaned towards the woman interviewing him with a smirk, cupping a hand around his lips and pretending to whisper, "I think I'm as good as I'll ever be. This dude’s gonna pass me up sooner rather than later."

The woman laughed and leaned back in her chair as he did. "Well, that's high praise coming from you. You've won first team all pro every year in the Federation, and in your lone foray into the Classic thus far, you were named team MV-"

"We were 15-15," Leonardo interrupted her, waving his hand, "Didn’t make the playoffs. And that falls squarely on my shoulders. That was my team, and as such, our record, our failure to make the knockout stages? That's on me, one hundred percent. All that MVP award did was make it clear that these Krauts are my team, and that means that season is totally on me."

"Well, now that we've established that," Nancy turned over a page on her notes biting her lip and probably surprised at his answer, "You had a historic season in the Federation's play. A Federation MVP award this time, a championship, and a .401 batting average. You may be right in that you can't get much better, but it's fair to ask, can anyone?"

Harrison shrugged, "Yeah, it was awesome, but I'm twenty five, I'm in my prime. And honestly, if I can't keep it up at the international stage, where we're facing much tougher opponents, it isn't going to mean much. This is the real test, where the best of the best show up, and I just don't know if we're ready to make a name for ourselves out there yet." He paused, scrunching his cheek, adding, “I hope we are, of course. We all played really well in the domestic season after being exposed to that level of play. This is certainly a better squad than it was last go-round.”

"Alright, Leonardo," Nancy nodded, "Last one. Jesse Griffith," she paused for Harrison's reaction, and the shortstop visibly tensed a bit, "How do you feel about his late addition to the team? He is the youngest player to ever play professionally at fifteen years old, and was a very average player in the domestic season, though he showed occasional flashes of the talent that got him there."

"Yeah, that kid, first round draft pick by the Cleveland Thunder." Harrison tilted his head back and forth, pondering what he should say next, "Yeah, well, we decided to have a little competition for the starting job at shortstop, since that's his preferred position. I came out on top by a hair." Harrison's smile faded somewhat, "Look, in all seriousness, this kid should have gone to play internationally, Banija, or Quebec, something like that. He has real talent. We've got to work on his hitting a bit, but Tommy Verona's flying in here in a couple days, and he's the fastest Ranorian-born pitcher, well, ever. We'll get those two working together a bit if we can and crank up the batting cages. And hey, with any luck, the kid’ll be here for a while. He’s certainly got the potential."

“Well, that’s all I have for you, Leonardo, unless there’s anything you’d like to add?”

Harrison nodded, gesturing for the camera to focus in on him, “One thing, folks at home. We came together as a team yesterday, and asked ourselves, what is a reasonable expectation for this tournament? We’re going into a downright historic World Baseball Classic, the fiftieth edition, and we haven’t established ourselves as a contender yet.” Harrison paused for a deep breath. “So, what was that goal? Last season, we just wanted to win ten games, and we smashed that, breaking the five hundred mark. This year? We’re going to win twenty games, and we’re going to win a contest in the knockout stages. That’s our plan, that’s the goal. Because we want to make Ranoria proud, we want to show the world that we’re more than just a gridiron country. So, I’ll say it one last time before I go,” Harrison stood up from his chair pointing to the camera, “Twenty wins, and a win in the knockouts. Count on it.”

With an image of a star’s uber-confident smirk, the camera faded to commercial break, leaving viewers in Ranoria to wonder: Had the nation’s best baseball player taken a fastball to the head in practice recently?

Capital Stadium, Hapilopper City
Leading up to the start of World Baseball Classic 50
It was that time of year again. The Hapilopper National Baseball Team was getting ready to start on another campaign for the World Baseball Classic, the biggest baseball tournament in the multiverse. And unlike the year before, expectations were so high. Excitement was at a fever pitch, and it seemed like Hapilopper had come around for the team. To see them succeed. To see them win. To see them jump up one place from the year before. And on this breezy morning in Hapilopper City, at the old Capital Stadium, that old concrete donut off the West River, a few thousand fans had arrived to see their national team work out.

There had been some changes. Most notably, Charlton Forest was off the team entirely. A year before, his arm blew out as he was pitching against Sylvan Corwin, center fielder of the team from Jeckland. The injury was severe enough that he missed the entire National League of Hapilopper season, and just weeks before this workout, Charlton announced his retirement from baseball, after suffering setback after setback with the recovery to his arm. Instead of warming up in a bullpen area just past the first base line, Charlton was sitting in a luxury box overlooking third base. His arm in a cast, Charlton was still in no condition to do anything with it, much less hurl a pitch at 95 miles per hour.

Another starting pitcher, Curtis Skinner, was off the team, but this came to no surprise to anyone. Curtis, at 56 years old during the last World Baseball Classic, had been given a spot as a lifetime achievement award of sorts, and with Hapilopper not expecting much during the 49th World Baseball Classic, didn’t think a thing of Curtis being in a crucial position when a playoff spot mattered or if the team was playing in the finals. But both of those things happened, and Curtis delivered on both counts. For the most part. But Curtis was sitting in the dugout at Capital Stadium, having taken on the role of pitching coach for the Hap Thrashers.

Replacing the two of them were some interesting choices, Nolan Jefferson and Lucky Spalding. Nolan was a popular choice among sportswriters for his tenacious spirit and his varied arsenal, headlined by a pitch called a “dropball” by some experts for its tendency to drop both in altitude and in velocity. Hitters looking for a fastball down the middle find themselves fooled by the pitch and often swinging a little bit too early.

And then there was Lucky, who was an eccentric, to say the least. In fact, his tendency to order two chili dogs from the concession stand before each start, then gobble them up before the first pitch, was about the least of his quirks, as his national teammates quickly learned.

As players were warming up out on the field at Capital Stadium, Lucky walked onto the field, about as calm as ever, carrying something that ballplayers didn’t normally carry with them onto the field. Not even Jordan Meadows, known for his eccentric Rodney DeRude persona, was a little taken aback.

“Is that… a unicycle?” Jordan asked a couple of pitchers he was hanging out with.

Cole Winthrop, warming up with catcher Grady Elliott, took notice. Grady, crouched behind a home plate, turned around and took notice as well. He then turned back to Cole and shook his head.

Not really bothered with what his teammates thought, Lucky got on the unicycle and started moving himself on the warning track of Capital Stadium’s field. Was this some kind of party trick intended to entertain the crowd? Was this something he had just thought of on the spur of the moment? And how on earth was he so good with this unicycle? And what did Dale Moss and Curtis Skinner think of this?

Dale, standing behind the batter’s cage at home plate with Dayton Rowe, watching Leroy Hunnisett taking batting practice, took notice pretty quickly as soon as he saw Lucky riding the unicycle out in right field. So did Dayton, and so did Leroy, who lost his focus as he noticed the pitcher, about as calmly as ever, riding through right field.

“You didn’t sign off on this, did you Skip?” Dayton asked the manager.

“Of course I didn’t,” Dale replied. “If that dumbass falls on his throwing arm, we’re down one starting pitcher before we even find out who we’re facing. Well, make that two pitchers, because I had hoped we’d get Charlton Forest back, but hey ho.”

Leroy looked back at Dayton and Dale and shook his head.

“I hope he’s not out there if I send one out there,” Leroy responded. “I don’t wanna bean him when he’s riding out there. But that’d be kinda funny, not gonna lie.”

Dayton and Dale chuckled. Leroy fired several shots out to the outfield, but fortunately, all of them missed Lucky, as he calmly yet deliberately fired his unicycle on the warning track in the outfield of Capital Stadium. Lucky would later tell his teammates he was used to doing something like this before every game. Dale was less than impressed, and ditto with Curtis Skinner, who both asked that Lucky not do something like that.

“You see, if you land on your arm, we’re gonna lose you,” Curtis said. “That turf at Capital Stadium is a carpet on top of concrete. You don’t want to fall off a unicycle and land on that. I get it, it’s something you like to do, but please, for God’s sake, be careful. We lost one pitcher early last year because of a bad arm injury.”

All things considered, though, the Hapilopper National Baseball Team was a very cohesive unit as they prepared for the 50th World Baseball Classic. This was still many of the team that had been there from the beginning, through that first playoff run, the next two years of disappointments, and then the breakthrough last year. There were a few new players, but all things considered, this was still that same core.

Even Jerome Hayden, considered by some to be among the most egotistical players in Hapilopper, was wanting to get that WBC trophy, regardless what it took. And you know something? It was probably going to take some of his smooth hitting. He walked towards the batting practice cage, and gave Dale and Dayton a huge smile as he prepared to take some cuts. And more often than not, those shots wound up going into the seats in the outfield.

Dale watched ball after ball go into the first and second deck at Capital Stadium and smiled. He had very high hopes for the coming World Baseball Classic. Everyone did.

With the disappointing result at the last WBC, the Nordic Baseball association has decided to go with a different coaching staff. However, they did retain pitching coach Jon Isaksson because he is a well respected veteran and the pitching was not an issue. This new staff have a different style of play. Instead of swinging for the fences and being aggressive on the base paths, the new look is more take what the pitcher gives you and get on base however you can. Playing smart is the name of the game now. The new staff have retained some veterans for leadership and knowledge but have overhauled the lineup a lot.

"We welcome you to the proud baseball nation of Super-Llamaland, out in the suburbs of Nikcoro, and for Squidroidia's first match in the World Baseball Classic, the team has to face something that Squidroidians have faced before in other sports - Exiles. Inkopolis FC have done that with Hronork of Qusmo, and now, for the first ever baseball game in this country, it's the people formerly from Hicaña who will take on Team Squidroidia. Squidroidia's first pitch for the 50th running of the World Baseball Classic is about to be thrown."

"From Jack Adams Memorial Field in Nikcoro, the unofficial capital of the Hicañan exiles, my name is Kyo Yoshida for SBN Sport. It has been a while since the last game in the Inkhallan National Baseball League, and to be honest we couldn't wait longer to say this, but we have national team baseball! After the draw from Cassadaigua, a total of 78 teams were assigned to 13 6 team groups for the group stage, 30 matchdays of constant travel for all teams involved, with Squidroidia being drawn in Group 5. Before we get to Group 5, let's talk about the other groups.

"Group 1 has Ko-oren, not only a traditional baseball powerhouse, but one of the best teams in gridiron football team right now, along side Velarland, Inner AngianaUsordia, Philamer Isle, Kohnhead and the Northern Land itself, Terre Septentrionale. Group 2 is headlined by Sarzonia, as they are joined by Northwest Kalactin, Megistos, Darmen, Valanora and a very interesting and frankly spectacular nation, Sevendia. #7 ranked Hapilopper is in Group 3, along with HUElavia, Sicoutimont, The Fortem, West Phoenicia and Barnley. Group 4 has the playoff hosts and the best team in baseball Cassadaigua along with Carung, the defending IBS champions Daskel, IBS co-host Tikariot, Thea Liters and Oscioru. And there it is, Group 5, home of Squidroidia, Norrhem, the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, Drawkland, the Pripet Socialist Republic and Hicaña themselves. And this is just 30 of the 78 teams!

"Nova Anglicana have Group 6, sharing it with a surprising quarterfinalist in the World Junior Hockey Championships in the Republic of Dixie. South Covello and South Newlandia will contest Group 8 with Zwangzug, Banija and Super-Llamaland, the country which we are in right now, are in Group 9. AO powerhouses in baseball Hampton Island will contend with the Drunk People from the Local Tavern in Group 10. Newmanistan has to contend with Equestria and Falisiand in Group 11. Abanhfleft and Liventia are in Group 13 with Npc West Florida, and the defending world champions of baseball, the Sherpa Empire, have Group 12, their defense of the title starting with a home game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. It is a lot of teams, and a lot of storylines can be drawn as the days go on.

"Sano Anzai will receive the first pitch from Jason Costa, and Yagami Keishi starts as the pitcher for Team Squidroidia. When we come back, the outlook of Group 5 and how Squidroidia can make a run against Quebec and Drawkland. Don't go anywhere."

PITCHING ROTATIONS

Matchday 1 (Season Opener @ Hicaña) - Yagami Keishi, then Miya Taisho, then Yokoyama Makoto, then Maki Bokkai
Matchday 2 (Home Opener Vs. Norrhem) - Hano Kosami, then Seo Eien, then Akazawa Kenji, then Maki Bokkai
Matchday 3 (@ Pripet Socialist Republic) - Shoji Harumi, then Hata Eikichi, then Yokoyama Makoto, then Maki Bokkai

INTERESTING FACT

The last winner of the Inkhallan National Baseball League, or INBL, was the Inkopolis Mets, who beat the Dillon Trackers in the 2016 Inkhalla Series. The Dillion Trackers, along with record champions the Inkopolis Squids and the aforementioned Inkopolis Mets, are the only known teams from the INBL that survived the Apocalypse in terms of their names, but there hasn't been an official continuation to the Trackers in Team Squidroidia Baseball. A 2017 season was planned, but wasn't started due to the Apocalypse that birthed Squidroidia.

"So the group draw just happened"

"So it did"

"Should we talk about Hicaña's draw?"

"Sure that seems like a natural conversation topic, let's switch back and forth after every sentence too"

"Well we're in Group 5 with Norrhem"

"The dependency of Tikariot? Should have a lot of media coverage"

"I don't see how that's relevant but sure"

"Well Tikariot has a lot of media coverage"

"That doesn't really mean their dependency would"

"Well usually dependencies don't have as much media coverage as their overlords, but I'd still expect some"

"Also why would that affect their baseball team's chances? They're unranked"

"Well teams with more media coverage usually do better at the WBC"

"Sucks how we don't have a media in that case"

"Well we're kind of being like the media right now"

"Wait so we'll have to keep having these conversations? How will that affect how the Phoenixes do"

"I'm not sure if we can keep having these conversations, I've been pretty busy with school"

"Okay well that means our team is going to suck"

"Yeah probably"

"Also, if general interest in baseball is the indicator we're using here, we don't really need to be the ones talking about it right? There's probably a lot of Hicañans having these conversations, so the onus doesn't fall on us"

"That makes sense, but I'm sure a lot of those Hicañans will be busy with school as well"

"Sure is a rough time in the academic calendar, I guess"

"Well at least we can still have these conversations since they don't really take that long"

"Maybe that's why the author is relying on poorly done parodies of other WBC nations' media coverage instead of creating new material"

"What?"

"What?"

"Okay anyways we had Norrhem, who else?"

"Squidroidia"

"Oh cool, that's where Liu Huiying plays"

"Liu Huiying the Yue footballer?"

"That's right"

"Why do we both know who that is"

"Not sure"

"We also have the Royal Kingdom of Quebec"

"Oh man, they're actually good at sports"

"Only football and hockey though, right?"

"Well they also made the Round of Sixteen last WBC, and they do pretty well at other sports too"

"We're probably screwed then"

"We also have Drawkland"

"Haha 10-3"

"And the Pripet Socialist Republic"

"Well sounds like we're not going to advance then"

"Yeah Drawkland and Quebec are way better than us"

"Honestly so are the other teams"

"Well as long as we keep having these conversations, maybe we'll have a shot"

"Come on You Phoenixes!"

"Let's Go Hicaña!"

For the general digest of the Cransian people...

The divine bearers of the message of our people were drawn, gloriously, into the strong Group 13 of this competition, with two top 15 ranked teams in the tournament, and two more teams bearing a rank. This is significant, as many groups carry three unranked squads, and our Cransian squad is one of the two in Group 13.

It is unfortunate, however, that our glorious nation will be forced to wait until the playoffs to display their grandeur. Without a single top 5 opponent, who's skill and profession may have been enough to press even the blessings of our creator Alhaymana, there is little doubt that Cransia will finish the slate at 30-0, with no real competition, due to their high seeding, until the second round of the playoffs at the earliest.

Additionally, our heroic ambassadors were gracious enough to devote their time to an exhibition game against volunteers from among our citizenry. The game was a blowout, obviously, as our general populace could not compare to those talented and blessed with our Light's blessing. The game would be decided 13 runs to 1, with M-299814 going four for four with each hit being a home run. Considering he did this well against Cransians, it's real possibility that he could go the entire tournament without missing a single pitch, as pitchers never managed a single strike on him.

Meanwhile, in reality...

"By Alhaymana, we are a dumpster fire, aren't we?" The team's manager said under his breath. The exhibition game, with a final score of 7-6, in favor of the national team, had been a disaster. The only thing that the press was somewhat truthful on, he note, was M-299814's performance, as the massive human being had indeed notched a hat trick of home runs.

The manager watched a those poor souls whom had volunteered, likely just for the thrill of playing one last game of baseball, as Cransian sports stopped after high school, were led away into vans that, for all the public's knowledge, they would never emerge from.
Puppet of Ran, unless you want to type out Ranoria, that's your decision. In that case, puppet of Ranoria
