Hurricane Zeta

Postby Grinning Dragon » Wed Oct 28, 2020 2:35 pm

Hurricane Zeta has hit the NOLA area. We lost main power around 1552hrs cst. House is on backup power.
Sure has been a crazy hurricane season and I was getting tired of putting stuff away only for the previous hurricanes didn't come towards my area. Hopefully as predicted this thing will blow through quickly and our area should be clear of it after 2100hrs cst.
I know there are others here that reside in La. Stay safe out there.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the hurricane appears to be very fast-moving. It not stalling over NOLA and Southern LA could be a silver lining, yeah?

Yes, something like 20mph. As I posted earlier, the weather heads are saying our area should be clear of the hurricane after 2100hrs cst.

Here’s to hoping you guys get over this quickly. Did work on the levies finished? We went to NOLA last year in August and we saw they were working on the levies.

The ones close to my area (Jefferson Parish)have been completed along with many others and on the other side of the river. I'm sure it's an ongoing project.
One thing to note I did hear earlier today that in Orleans Parish they are down a pump.

Correction: Lost the whole panel now to the privacy fence, and lots of small branches in the backyard. Wind is really whipping.

Isn't too bad. A bit of standing water in the backyard but not as much as I've seen it on heavy downpour days.
I think they project rainfall to be between 2" - 4"

If it's right over you and one panel went down, you can probably expect to have to reinstall the entire fence when it's over. At least that's what happened to my neighbors when Irma came through. All solid panels that were "against the wind" were flattened, while the fence row going the other way was fine.

Good luck and try to enjoy the Fun Weather. There's nothing as exciting as a good hurricane! I'm actually a bit jealous because Florida hasn't had anything exciting this year. Usually we at least get a tropical storm or two to spice things up.

Another section of fence on the other side of the yard has now come apart. This section that blew down is resting on the ground and seems to be safe from the wind picking it up and flinging. fingers crossed.

Okay, I just wanna say, this hurricane season has been stupid! This season is practically tied with 2005 with the most named storms AND ITS NOT EVEN NOVEMBER! It feels like there's a new hurricane every week at this point and by december we'll probably run out of greek names to use!

And to make things even more stupid, there's only been like 3 hurricanes that did real harm. In 2005, hurricane Stan & Katrina killed thousands and destroyed towns! It's like Earth traded their high powered hurricane for several low to medium tier hurricanes/tropical storms this year.

EDIT: Hope you survive Grinning Dragon!

It was expected to weaken before landfall due to wind shear and cooler water. It defied all predictions by becoming a category 2.

Thanks San.
Eye of the storm is over us now. Went out and picked up the fence slats and secured them, also picked up the branches to keep them from flying.
Noticed the neighbors big gate got blown off, secured that as well even though it wouldn't have caused us any harm.

I thought it was like 110? Did it lose strength that quick?

Wind speed and atmospheric pressure differs/changes across the diameter of a hurricane, with this hurricane the center of it passed over the metro area, where as those on the right side of the hurricane got the full brunt of the winds.
Edit: this can explain it better than I. Pressure and Winds the distribution across a hurricane
