The 50,000 lightyear jump (FT, Closed, attn. Nyte)

Postby Lotrabme » Thu Dec 06, 2018 8:15 pm

Scene 1: The Ekkaia: Capital Orbital Station above Hame

Lord Nathaniel Blackroz was scanning through the text of some new document brought from the Ministry Council before the Sages. He peered at the words carefully checking for anything amiss. The grammar was impeccable, “thank ghost for that” he thought, since it indicated that this bill had been written by a competent secretary at least.
Looking up once he made it through the clauses, he saw his fellow sages each seated on their thrones facing each other in a circle beneath the black-silver metal of the chamber dome. Nathaniel said to his reading peers “I think we can approve this without much debate, it does nothing to change the current tax plans our colonists have set up but will streamline our collectors’ ability to get credit back to us.”
“Agreed” three of the other six said, while the others nodded silently. “Then without further ado, let us seal it” Lord Nathaniel said as he placed his signet ring upon the bottom of his document. Once he lifted his finger, his sigil was imprinted upon the paper. The other Sages had done likewise, and they placed their documents to the side.
“Okay” the young Vice Sage Madeline Vulcone piped up from Nathaniel’s left. “We have one more thing to discuss before we break for dinner… I’m sure you all have read the reports of the activity currently occurring in the Gamma and Delta quadrants.”
Each of the sages harrumphed or groaned with disdain for the wars and tribulations facing the denizens of the galactic “North.” “Lord Emmanuel, my grandfather, expressed his wish to begin a new more active period of involvement in interstellar diplomacy. We have a number of Nuncios in several of the larger nations, but we need to do more to support our local initiatives.”
Giliman Tarn, one of the four Outer Sages, spoke up “The Darnellburg waystation is going to be complete in two months, we still haven’t received word of approval for the Twin Eagles Corridor as a waystation, but the public has begun to settle the station and the Karo-Darnell system at large. They can access the corridor from there as is and the average incomes of the settlers speak for themselves. It’s high time we put the port to official use, even with another network.”
“My sentiments exactly Lord Giliman. Especially since our Admiral Kranmar has established the Velorum Annex as a haven for refugees. The network I thought we might proactively establish is an alliance with a Gamma power. The state I have in mind is the Interstellar Empire of Nyte.”
A couple soft hums met the voice of Lord Nathaniel the Chief Sage. “We have a Nuncio stationed in the Empire, he has sent periodic reports to us of a gate system which the Nyteborne are constructing. We think that combined with our own technology, this gate system may well prove an economic boon to us and give us further reach in the galaxy.”
“I would recommend” said Coda Lovol, the Shadow Sage “that we make sure our Nuncio crafts a deal which will be favorable to us in any circumstance. While a gate system would offer us greater access to trade, it might also invite a flood of immigrants to deal with and even worse, exposure to invasion. We’ve been safely nestled in the middle of the Beta Quadrant, but the Twin Eagles and this new gate may offer too many avenues for outside influence.”
“A reasonable point Lady Coda” Lady Madeline “and I agree, the deal should benefit us in all cases. I do have faith our Nuncio will make sure of that.”

Scene 2: Sigma 161 System, Hyperion
The Mind Empire Embassy Suite

The Nuncio Elio Ephron stared at the screen of his personal computer. It had been a long time since he had received any official messages or dictates from the Sage Council. Indeed, the last message he had received was the report that Lord Nathaniel had ascended to Chief Sage after the death of Lord Emmanuel. He guessed that the matters of interior importance on Hame had kept the government busy, but in truth he had done very little in his post so far aside from extend diplomatic formalities to the Nyte government on behalf of the Mind Empire. Now however, he saw an official order given with his name on it from the Vice Sage Madeline Vulcone. He opened it with trepidation.
The text was short but informative, and a link to a video file was included in the message. He opened it to reveal Lady Madeline’s smiling face.
“Good day Elio, I hope this message finds you well. I have been reading over your yearly reports of activity in the Interstellar Empire and I found the reports of their new Gate initiative interesting. As you will be familiar with our own gate technology, I believe you have the skill to represent our interests to the Nyteborne Emperor and his government. You’ll find the pertinent details below, but I have drafted a preliminary agreement to be presented to Emperor Morningstar for the construction of a Super-Gate network between Karo-Darnell on our end and, most likely, Sigma 161 on theirs. My draft of the plan is just that, a draft. I leave it up to your judgement how you wish to craft it, but make sure we get a good deal! Thank you in advance Nuncio, may the Holy Ghost guide you.”
As the video flickered off Elio sat back in his seat with almost a cold sweat. He jumped up when he heard his office door slide open. “Babe what’s up?” It was his mistress Ayanona, whose skin shone golden brown in halls yellow lights. Elio turned to her in his chair and grinned wide “Babe, I have a mission from the Sages.”
“Get out of here.” He said “seriously?”
“Oh I’m serious, or do you want to see the video from Lady Madeline for yourself?”
Ayanona’s eyes went wide at the mention of the Sage by name and she knelt in a holy sign over her chest.
“Relax my love” the ambassador said bidding her to rise “she is not here in person. But she has tasked me with submitting a proposal to the Emperor and his government to build a Star Gate system between the Empires.”
“Really?” Ayanona said curious “What prompted that?”
“I’m not entirely sure, but I think back home people have been moving in a more galactically involved direction, and I think cause I’m out here and we have an established trade agreement with the Nyteborne, it’s up to me to get the Sage’s project started.”
“I see” Ayanona nodded. “I guess that means you’ll be trying to catch an audience with the Emperor or his people then?”
“Exactly, I was just about to begin writing a request to Telemachus for an audience.” As he said it Elio opened a writing program and began typing his header info out. Elio Ephron, Nuncio Extraordinary for the Latin Mind Empire of Hame, etc. to the Interstellar Empire of Nyte… Imperial Reckoning 10th of Fevery, 3943…
As he typed, Elio thought about what type of argument he was going to make to the Interstellar Empire’s government for this gate. Lady Madeline had sent him the allocated funds for the project as well as a blueprint of the gates along with the dates and location of their construction. The Castor shipyards around the gas giant Sputnik. Hopefully the level of sureness about the manner of the construction would assure the Nyteborne government that this project was a reality rather than a nebulous dream of the hierarchs.
He knew he would have to offer them several incentives for the project. He thought he had it and began typing as he heard Ayanona greet a new figure at the doorway. It was Telvar Qornamee, the captain of the ambassador’s guard, the diplomat for the Mallumans, and one of Elios long time friends.
“Oh there you are Telvar!” She said brightly to the Malluman who entered the room. Telvar nodded with an approving hiss as she entered the room stooping through the doorway. “Elio, what are you working on?”
“I received a directive from the Sages, I’m to organize a gate project between us and the Interstellar Empire for the benefit of our nations.”
“By the Holy Ghost” Telvar said with surprise “I did not expect something like that. I was ready to go play racquets, but I can see we have some high-level business to attend to for once.”
“Oh, we will still go play, it’ll just have to wait until I get this message sent.” Elio shrugged.
In about an hour, Jonus Telemachus would receive an invoice from Ambassador Ephron. Upon opening the letter, Telemachus would see the following:

The Matter of the Message

Code: Select all
From the Office of Elio Ephron,
Nuncio Extraordinary for the Latin Mind Empire of Hame, etc.
Addressed to the office of the Head of Foreign Affairs and Relations for the Interstellar Empire of Nyte, C.O. of Hyperion: Jonus Telemachus, and with respect to the Emperor of the Interstellar Empire of Nyte: Xaiah Morningstar.
This day, the 10th of Fevery, 3943 Imperial Reckoning…
   Your excellency,
I have the pleasure of addressing your office with good news from my Heads of State. The Sage Council has authorized the plans for a Super-Gate which, if approved by your government, will bring our star states into a closer communion of commerce and if it is agreeable, true alliance.
While our imperial domain is nestled in the middle of the Beta Quadrant, and yours lies near the meridian of Gamma and Delta, any merchant vessels which choose to utilize the provisions of our trade pact must use a long and winding route around the length of the galaxy to reach you, or else risk their cargo passing through the un-established routes in Delta which has of late been hostile to travelers.
The Sages take inspirations from our local system of gates and beacons which in the last two centuries has been a boon to our domestic revenue and the happiness of our people. We have with our cousins in the Hades Imperium utilized a gate system between their extragalactic holdings and our ports and have so found larger “Super Gates” to be efficient to our cause in establishing commercial links with other powers.
Lady Madeline, the Vice-Chief Sage of the Council and the architect of this project, has sent me the plan details which they wished me to discuss with you and his majesty. We have allocated a portion of the Imperial revenue for this cycle to the completion of the project on our end in a matter of 5 months with help from the manufacturers stationed at the shipyards of Sputnik in the Dominion of Castor, one of our colonial provinces.
The blueprint for the gate itself was sent to me, and you may wish to emulate it in the construction of the gate on your end. If, however, you find yourself un-able to emulate the designs, I have been authorized to approve the council in constructing a paired gate for your use. The only issue will be transporting the gate. One of our commercial Hulk Galleon’s would be hired to transport the gate to you, but it would take 1.43 standard years to transport it to the system of your choice.
If you can construct your own sister gate, we will require its precise orbital coordinates and route around its host star in order to properly align the gates. As to the portal-projection our gate would use, our hyperspace portals are created using processed Red-Matter reactions. We can offer you information on this substance and its operation if the project seems amenable to you.
The Mind Empire’s gate will upon completion be stationed in the Karo-Darnell system. This system is a frontier of ours near to the Castor sextuplet star system. A trade port, the Darnellburg moon, has been completed and was initially built to serve as a waystation for the Twin Eagles trade corridor. The Nyteborne merchants would not only have easy access to the ports of the Mind Empire, but to the beta quadrant due to proximity to the Corridor.
If this project is something the Interstellar Empire desires, and it can be approved, the Sages will be inclined to consider the friendship of the Nyteborne dear and will encourage our Imperial Congress to approve a closer level of interaction. If the commercial interests of the Mind Empire are met, then the populace and the governors will be inclined to support Imperial alliances, be they economic or military.
Please reply as soon as convenient and let me know whether a meeting with you or an audience with his majesty can be arranged to discuss the project further. Do also let me know if any of the terms need clarification.
With respect,
Ambassador Elio Ephron.

Sigma 161
Hyperion
The Office of Jonus Telemachus

"Jonus" came the voice from the holographic representation of Xaiah Morningstar; the new Emperor of the Interstellar Empire. "I trust nothing is amiss? It is rare that you ask to speak to me personally, and it's too early for one or your regular monthly reports" the Emperor continued, His voice sounding unusually tired.

"Indeed my lord" Jonus replied. "Matters are well in hand, as is the usual. However, I have received a request from one of the on-site ambassadors that I felt needed to be brought to your attention" he continued. "A certain Nuncio Elio Ephron of the Mind Empire of Lotrabme has received a directive from his government... It seems they've gotten wind of the gate project we've been developing over the last little while, and are interested in a bit of cooperative expansion; connecting our gate system with their own."

"I see" came the terse reply from the Emperor. "What, however, led you to bringing this matter directly to me" the Emperor continued; his glowing, holographic form flickering slightly. Much like my father before me, I trust you to be able to handle any diplomatic matters without my direct oversight, and there seems to be nothing unusual about this matter."

"They've requested a direct audience with yourself concerning the plans they have for this" Jonus replied, ignoring the arching of the Emperor's holographic brow as he continued. Their plans seem well thought out, but there may be some issues."

There was a dry chuckle from the hologram... "I'll say, we've never, not even once in our history allowed an outsider to step foot on Nyte when we could avoid it" the Emperor remarked; sounding more curious at the prospect rather than angry as Jonus would have expected. "That's why we built Hyperion out in Sigma 161... Hell, that's why my father gave you the authority to act on his behalf, and why I have continued to do so as well. Is this Nuncio aware of what they are asking for" The Emperor replied; staring intensely at Jonus' pale, age-lined face.

"To be honest, I'm not entirely sure my lord" Jonus replied. "However, considering the present situation, and the potential ramifications of this agreement, I felt it advisable to facilitate at least, the possibility..."

"Hmm..." Was the Emperor's reply, and for a good minute or so, there was silence as the hologram seemingly stared stonily into the distance; at what, Jonus could only imagine... "You think" the Emperor continued slowly; seemingly still in deep thought "you think that this matter could come to be this important?"

"Potentially, considering the current state of things... Yes, I do. Otherwise, I would have handled the matter myself" Jonus replied.

The Emperor sighed loudly... "Send me the information they provided for you... The encrypted channel obviously, and clear this Nuncio for travel... One of our ships; not theirs. He can bring minimal security along if safety is a concern for them. Otherwise, I'll leave it to you to handle it if they prove unwilling."

"I'll see to it my lord" Jonus replied; struggling to hide the surprise in his voice. He had not expected the Emperor to agree to a personal audience at all, not with how busy things were in the Empire right now, and especially not with the current state of massed, open war that the Empire found itself in; hunting daemons and eldritch abominations, and their mortal pawns through the Gamma Quadrant. Things must be even worse than I've been made aware of Jonus thought to himself.

"See that you do" the Emperor replied as the hologram cut out, the connection being terminated abruptly from the Emperor's end.

Looking over the information once more, Jonus began typing up a reply... Wondering if this Nuncio was aware of how unusual this whole thing was, or of the position in history he was potentially about to have. Hopefully, he'd be up to the task of pleading the Mind Empire's case. Finishing his reply, Jonus called in an aide, and removing the secure, diplomatic datastick from his terminal commented simply "Nuncio Elio Ephron, the Mind Empire of Lotrabme, the diplomatic wing... And make it snappy... Take a guard with you, and make sure to deliver it directly.

The aide took the offered datastick, and sketching a sharp salute, stepped smartly from Telemachus' office; making his way; armed escort in tow, to the diplomatic wing to deliver the Empire's reply.

The Mind Empire Ambassadors Suite

A messenger arrived faster than Elio had anticipated, and when he read the authorization for passage to Nyte itself he was overcome with excitement. It was a mixture of elation and fear however, since now the Emperor had decided to break the longstanding ban of foreigners to Nyte. Elio wondered how the Nyteborne might react to him and his companions. He decided it would just be something he had to experience for himself.

Ayanona and Telvar of course received invitations from Elio to accompany him. "This is absolutely historic!" Telvar said with a toothy smile and a glint in her reptilian eyes. Ayanona chimed in with a bright "Vacation time! We need to start packing, we can't keep his majesty waiting Lio babe."
Elio laughed. "I'm glad you both are eager, and my deputies can take care of the office while we are away, but we need to discuss a couple of things..."
The Mistress and the Werox both listened.
Elio continued: "We are going to be representing the Mind Empire, and everyone in it, to a nation who have not had the best relationship with the outside galaxy. We need to show ourselves as prime examples of civilized sentient beings. To that end I am sendin a message to Governor Jonus before we leave regarding protocol."

Jonus Telemachus would receive a summons from Nuncio Ephron and his two companions asking about the proper manners and protocol that would be expected of them upon meeting the Nyteborne Emperor. Elio stressed to the Governor in his direct message that he wanted to meet with Telemachus in person to discuss certain aspects of the trip.

If Telemachus decided to meet with Elio before their departure, the Nuncio would ask the governor "How should we address his Majesty? Are their any aspects of the project he found agreeable?" He would also ask with some tip-toeing caution "I know the Nyteborne don't have the most positive outlook on outsiders. I just want to be sure that my party will be safe and what we can do to make people feel less intimidated." With the last line Elio nodded in the direction of his Malluman companion Telvar who struck a well chiseled and wide 6'11" frame. The Hamans being only slightly removed from baseline mankind were less conspicuous than a large bipedal theraspid.

Jonus slowly made his way down the hall; the tapping of a cane, and the soft sound of his footsteps on the marble floor accompanying him as he slowly made his way to the quarters of the Mind Empire ambassadors suite. He was in no hurry; using the relatively short walk to compose his thoughts on the meeting to come. It was new territory, and as an old man on the wrong side of a century, new territory such as this was somewhat discomforting though he hid it well; decades of experience and his unusually calm nature; a rarity for a Nyteborne, helping with this quite a bit.

Arriving at the suite with his mind prepared, Jonus buzzed for entry; announcing himself through the intercom. Upon being let in, he graciously accepted a seat which he slowly lowered himself into, but refused the offer of refreshment. "I understand" he began "that there are some concerns, and likely a large number more questions that you have concerning the matter your delegation brought to me earlier. I am afraid that I will likely not be able to help you with all of them, but I'll endeavor to help you where I can."

"Let me start by addressing your concerns for your safety, and the safety of your party" he continued. "As I previously detailed, a ship has been arranged to take you to Nyte... A diplomatic cruiser, the Bellus if I remember correctly... It is a slightly older ship, but a reliable one. Her captain and crew have a history of reliability and professionalism, and you'll have both security, and privacy while you're onboard, and plenty of opportunity to explore the non-restricted areas of the ship as well while you're enroute... Upon arrival, a shuttle will take you to the surface where an armed escort of Nytelords will bring you to the Emperor's palace in Halcon."

Jonus paused for a moment, contemplating how to phrase this next part. "I'm afraid you won't be seeing our capitol at it's best... As I understand it, clean-up efforts and repairs are still underway across large parts of the city; a... byproduct of a recent attack by daemonic forces. Despite this, I can assure you of the safety of your party; a detachment of the Emperor's own honor guard of Nytelords will be with you as you travel, and you've already been cleared a suite within the palace itself. The worse you can expect will likely be the occasional looks, and that only if you choose to travel through the city itself while you are there."

Jonus chose not to mention the violent response that said honor guard was likely to inflict on any Nyteborne foolish enough to harass, or to attempt harm against the Nuncio's party while on Nyte; largely because of how unlikely it actually was... even with the Nyteborne's reputation for xenophobia. The mere presence of just a single Nytelord would guarantee their good behavior.

"As for etiquette" he continued after a moment's pause. "Well, the Emperor is commonly referred to simply as 'My Lord' though as none of you are Nyteborne, I'd recommend simply referring to him as Emperor Morningstar unless or until he tells you to do otherwise... You will find though, that the Emperor is a fairly easy going man for the most part... He never was big on pomp or ceremony" Jonus finished; more almost to himself than to the Nuncio and his party. "Treat him as you would treat me... Talk to him as you would me, and you should do fine, and keep any attempts at flattery to a minimum; it won't win you any points with him."

"Largely, I think your proposal has him curious more than anything. Well, at least that's the impression I got from speaking to him when I first brought it to his attention. Don't think that it will be easy however... I can assure you, you will have your work cut out for you in convincing him to approve of this project; even with his apparent interest. I expect he will make you work for it" Jonus finished. "Now" he remarked with a slight grunt as he slowly stood up; supporting himself with his cane. "Unless there is anything else, I believe you have a ship to catch, and I have a terminal full of paperwork waiting for me back at my office."

Without any more questions, Jonus would make his slow, steady way to the door and be on his way; having done his part, and needing to get back to running Hyperion... The paperwork wouldn't fill itself out after all.

The Nuncio bowed his head and thanked Jonus Telemachus deeply. “Your advice is well met, and I assure you I will plead our case the best I can to his majesty.” After that, Elio and his people were on the way to their vessel.

On board the ship Bellus itself Elio and Ayanona lounged in their seats across from Telvar who was napping. The Malluman snored quietly, enough that the Hamans did not notice it above their own breathing which was calm. Ayanona’s black curls rested on Elio’s shoulder. He sighed as he opened his eyes and re-opened his digital portfolio. He was going over what he was going to tell the Nyteborne Emperor regarding the gate. His greater concern was how he was going to make it seem like a good idea for the Interstellar Empire. The Lotrabmeits seemingly had more to gain when it came to strategic alliance and economics. Elio had done his best to pay attention to what news the Nyteborne put out about their activity. Admittedly it was scant. What little there was he did treasure as a possible opening.

The references to daemonic activity and the forces combating it rang with a bell of familiarity to him. The Nytebornes’ challenges reminded him of many homilies he sat through his father, uncles, and grandfathers dragging him to on Y’rcon. The clergy always preached that with their innate psychic abilities and the lessons of the good book that they had mastered the daemonic threats which plagued the empire. No one in the core-worlds had seen any specters of daemonic threats in over three centuries, but the lessons were still taught in worship, and the clerics still taught to fight and hone their abilities.

Elio knew in his mind that he sounded just like his zealous father Zedakor. He wasn’t about to impose the Empire’s cultural mores onto the Nyteborne. He knew from interacting with their agents that they had a different view on tapping into the energy of the universe. Instead, he gathered, he would wait for an opportunity to bring it up to the Emperor if it prevailed. Stick to the market he thought, and if the Emperor shows a more concrete need for aid in fighting spiritual foes, he would offer the open hand of the Sages for this was part of Lady Madeline’s and Lord Nathaniel’s grander design.

The concerns of the market would be his chief priority, and if there was any question of the Empire’s more direct aide, the mages could provide. With that in mind, Elio awaited the trip of the Bellus to end, and if there was a window nearby he would look out to see if he could view the globe of the Nyteborne homeworld.

NSS Bellus
Enroute To The Nostromo System
The Interstellar Empire of Nyte

The Bellus made reasonably good time after departing Sigma 161, despite the purposely sedate speed maintained by her FTL drive. As the vessel was carrying foreign dignitaries, several concessions were made throughout the more public areas of the ship. The light level was increased from the normally near total darkness for one; despite the minor discomfort this caused among the Bellus' crew, and the more uncommon stores were opened to provide some additional culinary luxuries.

The crew themselves were ordered to keep their presence to a minimum in these areas as well; not to keep them from the foreigners in their midst, but more to keep the recreational areas quiet, available, and open for use. The Nuncio and his party would have the run of a variety of facilities from a fully stocked gymnasium, a library, a theater, and even several fancy restaurants to enjoy during the journey.

The trip would not last too long however, and eventually the Bellus found herself approaching the Nostromo system roughly a week out from Sigma 161. On the bridge, the Bellus' Captain, one Dercius Fulmin; a man of indeterminate age was connected to the ship through an older model BDI system which had him submerged in a tank full of amniotic fluid with a series of mechadendrites jacketed into his spine and the back of his skull... Looking out on his bridge crew as they largely pretended to be useful, he decided to break protocol, and invite the Nuncio and his party to the bridge for the transition into the Nostromo system, sending an Ensign to the Nuncio's quarters with the invitation.

The Ensign would arrive quite quickly, and upon being received, would relay the Captain's message in a terse, military fashion. "The Captain would like to extend an offer for you and your party to join him on the bridge for the transition into the Nostromo system. If you're willing, I'll be your escort for the duration" the Ensign finished with a bland, inflectionless voice; standing at attention in the doorway to the Nuncio's temporary quarters... He seemed... impatient; at least if one were familiar with the study of human body language, but was otherwise fairly emotionless and nondescript; with what could at best be described as a perfectly average appearance and demeanor. He would wait patiently for the Nuncio's reply, and if it was of the affirmative, would lead the Nuncio and his party through the maze of corridors to the Bellus' bridge; a nearly pitch black multi-level rectangular room with an open front that was filled with a series of glowing blue holoterminals. A central pit built into the lower level was dominated by a highly detailed 3D representation of the entirety of the Nostromo system... The representation was... detailed to say the least; with tens, if not hundreds of thousands of tiny icons representing planets, moons, stations, and more, down to individual aspects of the system defense grid; though the Nuncio and his party would likely not realize what any of the icons actually represented. At the very front of the bridge, a massive screen projected a real-time image of the Nostromo system, though it was dominated by the dark, glittering pearl that was the moon Nyte...

"Welcome to the Nostromo system Nuncio" came a rich voice with an odd echo; as if several people were speaking just slightly out of synch. "I hope you are appreciative of the historic importance of all of this" the voice continued. It would likely not take them long to realize that it was the Captain who was addressing them. "What do you think of your first view of my home?"

When the ensign arrived in the Nuncio’s quarters, he and Ayanona had just awoken from a brief nap. They had spent the “morning” with Telvar in the recreational quarters playing at racquets, the tennis like sport enjoyed by both Hamans and Mallumans in the Mind Empire. Elio was buttoning his robe for the day, a black and navy-blue stripped knee length robe under which he wore a green full body suit. When the Ensign gave his request, Elio smiled and said “Thank you sir, we will follow you in a moment!”

Turning to his consort he said, “My love we are heading to the bridge, call Telvar!”

Soon the three guests followed behind the ensign through the bowels of the ship and were escorted onto the command deck of the Bellus. The darkness of the room took some adjusting for Elio and Ayanona, but Telvar appeared unfazed by the change in light level. The Malluman sniffed the air and she turned upwards to see the tank where the Captain was submerged, if it was within visible view. Taking note of his position she followed next to Elio and Ayanona as they gazed down at the display of the system. Ayanona herself noted some of the figures appeared to be defensive while others were civilian. She made a quite note in her mind that it reminded her much of Hamesol’s own defensive net and the grids of the Dyson Swarm colonies.

Elio gazed up at the display of Nyte itself, the moon in all it’s splendor. He had seen images of it around Hyperion but as the Captain would allude to, the Nuncio felt he was witnessing something historic by being able to stare at this globe with his own eyes. Hearing the echoing voice speak to him, Elio turned and beheld the tank where the Captain was suspended. Smiling with his most diplomatic grin Elio said “The honor is mine Captain… Fulmin I believe. Yes, I am aware of the significance of our arrival here. Your world is as I have seen in images, like a black pearl hanging in space. It is quite lovely from this view.”

Elio and his companions each offered a bow at the waist in the direction of the Captain’s tank. “Thank you for inviting us to the bridge Sir” Ayanona said in her rich soprano voice. “We respect the Nyteborne desire for privacy and note when we are offered a more intimate view.” Telvar joined in, saying in reference to the Captain and his crew “it is an honor indeed to stand here among you and these proud defenders of your nation.”

Diplomatic Dropship
Enroute To Nyte
The Interstellar Empire of Nyte

After the trip to the bridge, the pace of things picked up quite a bit. As the Bellus moved to dock with the orbital ring circling Nyte, the Nuncio and his party would be escorted to one of the several diplomatic dropships stored aboard. Ugly, utilitarian, and military on the outside, the dropship was nevertheless finely appointed on the inside though not overly opulent... It could best be described as tastefully equipped, though a keen military eye would notice the subtle military touches included to ensure the safety of the dropship's passengers such as the reinforced hull, and the defensive layout of the dropship's interior.

An uneventful launch would be followed by a fairly smooth descent, and while there were no windows from which the view could be enjoyed, there were several holographic screens which fulfilled the role quite admirably, and the dropship's crew were polite and attentive; even finding the time to serve a simple fare of several kinds of finger foods to tide their guests over as they eventually made their approach to Halcon.

It would be on this approach that the dropships pilot would speak over the intercom. "Pardon the interruption, but I feel it's only polite to inform you that our landing will be... a little bit rough. Standard procedure requires that we perform a combat landing. As such, I'll have to ask that you remain seated and belted in from this point on as we'll be making our approach in just under five minutes. Thank you."

What followed could only be described as an "experience" as the dropship banked, and then dropped like a brick; it's inertial dampeners momentarily struggling to compensate as the dropship accelerated into a wide downward spiral towards the private starport attached to the Emperor's palace in the heart of Halcon... It would be at the last moment that the dropship would slow down to a "safe" landing speed, and it's retro thrusters would kick in hard. It would be a testament to the ships design that the brutal approach and landing was only slightly to moderately uncomfortable for the dropship's passengers and crew. "Welcome to Nyte ambassador" the pilot would speak over the intercom as the Nuncio and his party moved to exit the dropship.

Upon exiting the dropship, several things would be apparent... The first would be the honor guard squad of eight Nytelords in full combat gear; their menacing, ornate onyx colored power armor and array of weapons glinting dully in the limited amount of light that was actually noon on Nyte; though it could easily be mistaken for dusk or dawn by those who were unfamiliar with the moon. The next thing to become apparent would be an powerful coppery tang to the air... The cause of which could be seen on several of the buildings near the palace... They were streaked with layers of dried blood; though from the look of things, it was clear that a major clean-up operation was well underway.

The Nuncio and his party would only have a few minutes to take in the view, and to have to deal with the coppery scent in the air as the honor guard would move to escort them into the palace proper where they'd be taken to a private suite of rooms reserved for visitors. Upon arrival, they'd be informed that they would have several hours to refresh themselves before meeting with the Emperor for an informal dinner; the same squad of Nytelords would be on standby to escort them when they were ready to go... Until then, they would wait at the door; massive and silent; attentive even in the security of the heart of their strongest bastion.

Once safely inside the visitor’s suite, the Nuncio and his companions reflected on what they had seen for the past trip to the surface.

“That mess outside concerns me” Telvar said quietly. “I wouldn’t like to think daemonic entities would be allowed so close to the palace of an Emperor.”

“It seems like they got it cleared up thought” said Elio, concerned about what a sight like this might mean for the state of the Interstellar Empire. He didn’t keep on that subject for long, not wanting to think too much on it other than that a situation like that meant help from outside might be appreciated with more seriousness.

“The ride down to the surface was fun though” Ayanona quipped “We don’t get vertical drops like that often in civilian ships.”

“And that dropship was well armored” Telvar said “I felt safe on the ride.”

Elio nodded in agreement as he opened his portfolio which until then had been tucked under his arm. Looking at his notes and the gate diagrams he silently mouthed what he might say to the Nyteborn Emperor.

Ayanona peered over his shoulder and asked, “you’re starting with the economic benefits of the gates correct?”

“That’s right love” he replied.

“You remember what IRDaC wants and is willing to offer?”

“I remember” he said as he noted out loud and in his head the kind of materials the Grand Pensionary had forwarded to the Sages on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce for this deal. It regarded the wealth of the Mind Empire and the Interstellar Empire of Nyte as good partners for rare resources like the Red Matter used in the Lotrabmeit drives, the super-dense alloy of Space Titanium, the precious Heptol medicinal plants from the Malluman homeworld of San, and priced them against the resources said to lay in the Nyteborn’s home cluster of stars. New widescale trade would be beneficial to both parties.

Telvar listed to them discuss it. All these figures were well and good, but she had a different observation.

Chiming in she said “forgive me, but this Emperor Morningstar may be more interested in hearing what kind of help we could provide their military. The daemonic activity aside, which I don’t think should be brought up unless he does, Gamma and Delta have both been experiencing high levels of military action. As far as our intelligence networks and the Admiralty’s reports have said. This might be another good talking point.”

“Thank you for reminding me, I have thought about that Telvar” Elio nodded. “If I find the discussion of our commerce isn’t getting to the point, I’ll press the military assistance the gates could provide to the Nyteborn forces.” He scratched himself under his chin as he thought and muttered “and if that doesn’t work… the psychic point.”
His companions nodded.

For a while longer they continued their discussion and awaited the obsidian clad guard to escort them to the mysterious Emperor Morningstar. When they were close to approaching, the Nuncio dusted off his black robe of state and straightened it’s red and golden trim on his shoulders and chest to give himself the stately appearance of a representative of the Sages, the highest authority of the Mind Empire of Lotrabme. Ayanona was dressed in gold and had a headpiece like a diadem that wrapped by her ears and produced small golden wings behind them and nestled in their black curly hair. Telvar was wearing a black formal military undersuit and her clan tartan robe over her shoulders and wrapped about her waist. The pattern was buck cloth checkered with green and purple solid squares inside line squares of cyan. She also wore silver and gold neckbands and a bright golden headband tied to her neck-hair that accentuated the red of her eyebrow crests.

The Imperial Palace

The Interstellar Empire of Nyte

Three sharp knocks on the door would alert the Nuncio and his party that it was time to get moving. The large, onyx clad Nytelord who entered the room would nonetheless inform them, in a deep if mostly emotionless sounding voice that it was time. The trip through the palace would be unhurried...a keen observer would likely note that it was also not a direct route as there were many additional twists and turns through tasteful, though not exactly opulent hallways; the reason for which would be left for conjecture, unless the Nuncio or one of his party was curious enough to ask.

The dining room they would enter was a simple one, and probably smaller than expected. However, it fit the mood of a comfortable, informal space. The lighting was low, though brighter than the hallways had been, and the additional light reflected off of well polished woods and glistening marble surfaces. The singular table was a moderately large round affair covered in a deep red silk cloth. One wall was dominated by a spectacular view of the city of Halcon; easily visible through the thick windows that stretched from the ceiling to the floor. Another was clearly set up as something of a self-serve buffet and bar with a variety of food and drink fit for pretty much any taste.

Standing by the windows with his back towards the room was a tall, thin man. Pale skinned with chiseled facial features, and neck length wavy black hair, the man; obviously the Emperor Xaiah Morningstar, cut a gaunt though still imposing figure. He was dressed simply in a pair of plain black slacks and a long sleeved silk shirt in a deep blood red. A relatively unassuming looking platinum medallion hung close around around his neck, and several other platinum adornments decorated his person; from the buttons and cufflinks of his shirt, to the simple platinum bands on several of his fingers. A pair of well polished and comfortable looking black dress shoes and a plain black belt with a platinum buckle completed the Emperor's surprisingly simple outfit.

The Emperor took a drink from a glass held in his left hand before turning at the sound of the Nuncio and his party being led in. Deep, black eyes; ones that looked far too old for the fairly youthful face they were set in gazed upon them, and a simple nod directed at the Nytelord that had led them in was enough apparently to be taken as a dismissal as the bodyguard silently left; closing the door quietly behind them as they went.

"Please, help yourselves" Xaiah spoke as he walked past the table towards the small buffet; his voice a smooth, measured baritone. Serving himself from several of the dishes on the table he continued. "I find that I miss simple things...like serving myself a meal, and as I wanted this first meeting to be an informal one, I decided to indulge myself...I hope you do not mind" the last was posed as a question, and by his inflection, the answer would likely be important to the Emperor in some manner, though in what way remained to be seen.

Ephron and his companions did leave the nature of the palace corridors to their own silent conjecture as they followed the Nytelord onward to their meeting with the Emperor. Ayanona remarked on the beauty and craftsmanship of some of the decorative pieces in the hallways as they walked.

It took a few glances to comprehend the scene, but the Nuncio caught on quickly. Seeing the figure of this shadowy Emperor for the first time was at once a surprise and not. He had the figure of a nyteborne man of authority, and the look of cold purpose in his eyes reminded him of many of the Sages and stoic politicians of Hame and the Dominions. He was surprised however at the presentation, though he chose not to express it.

When Xaiah offered them the buffet as a sign of simple comfort and forwardness, Elio Ephron replied with a short bow and a friendly "Your Majesty" before continuing brightly "I am glad to see you trust us to be relaxed around you. We will gladly accompany you for a self served meal."

Telvar and Ayanona replied in kind following Ephron's lead. They waited to see if Emperor Morningstar would serve himself first, and either following him or with his silent permission they would grab their preferred meals. Elio and Ayanona each grabbed savory foods of all sorts while Telvar chose fruity snackish things before coming to a rarer slice of meat and choosing it.

Taking their places Elio decided to open his case. "You have been gracious your majesty, or would you prefer Xaiah or Sir Morningstar?..." and after settling that he continued "I've been given a mission from my superiors to talk to you about making good on the relationships our Star-States share. In simple terms we want to enhance our people's cooperation and friendship. I take it, in addition to your personal preferences, that you mean to show your dedication to this idea by meeting us here in private?"

The reaction of the Nuncio and his companions to his little test caused little outward reaction in the Emperor; an infinitismally small smile that was gone almost as quickly as it had appeared. They had passed a test however, one they likely hadn't even realized they were taking. Xaiah mulled this over as he began to serve himself from the selection.

Moving to the table, he waited, and motioned for them to take their seats before taking his own. Mulling over their comments, he took another sip from his glass of Amasec before replying. "In all honesty" he began; fiddling with several of the rings on his fingers. "I wouldn't quite say that I trust any of you; well, not entirely... Not yet at least. And despite appearances, well..." He stopped fiddling with the rings as his voice trailed off. More than likely, at least one of them would get the hint that he was giving them.

Taking another sip of his drink, he set the glass back down before continuing after a moments pause. "For this meeting, you may as well refer to me as Xaiah. This is meant to be informal after all. In future meetings however, a simple sir will do" he chuckled somewhat bitterly. As I'm sure Jonus probably told you, I never was one for formality... I'm still not to be honest, but, well, sometimes we must deal with things we find to be distasteful in the course of our lives. Tolerating formality is a relatively minor sacrifice in the scheme of things anyways."

"As for your mission here, I am indeed aware of what you're after; broadly at least, but that can wait until a more formal meeting I think. I'm sure you're at least a little weary from the journey, and for this meeting, I think the business can wait... A more formal meeting has been scheduled for three days from now. I'm sure our business can wait that long. For tonight, let us simply enjoy a simple meal while discussing simple things."

And so, they would likely do just that, keeping the conversation off of upcoming business. If the Nuncio, or any of his party were feeling brave, they'd likely push the conversation towards topics about the Empire that might be of special interest to them, or even, if they were really confident, they might mention the state of the Capitol outside. Otherwise, the meal would go on to end a few hours later with the Emperor suggesting that they take the next day to perhaps do a little exploration.

Their silent Nytelord guide was, naturally, waiting to take them back to their rooms once the meal was finally ended.

"Ah, of course sir" Nuncio Ephron smiled in agreement. "It was a long journey, but pleasant enough. We do appreciate you all offering us such a pleasant ship and all it's amenities."

As they ate, it was Ayanona who asked the Emperor about his homeworld. "This seems like a... cozy world to call home. How long have the Nyteborne inhabited it? Or are you natives?" She also wanted to ask about the culture, so if he chose to provide an answer to her queries she would ask another. "Do the Nyteborne have any really unique traditions? Say with food for instance. We see you have a variety of meals here, are there any dishes which a tourist "simply must" try to get the Nyteborne pallet?" She did air-quotes to accentuate the tourist peddler voice and laughed at herself.

Telvar also chose to ask a question "Your soldiers are an imposing bunch, it's impressive to see. What kind of training do you put them through?" She asked and if he was curious in return, she would tell him about the training regiments that the Sevashi Stellarii, the Haman Space Marines, and the Malluman Auxiliary Clan forces went through. "We all train at high gravity in the military stations, regular sparing and flash training sims. Also away missions to the "Protectorate" park-planets we have. A few weeks in the jungle with the beasts and humid toxins builds strong soldiers."

Elio was silently pleased at his mate and friends' questions. If Xaiah wasn't tired of them after that, Elio just to get to know this man the Emperor better asked him about the rituals of the Nyteborn leaders. "Do they make you go through a complex coronation ceremony? We have some pretty serious stuff even for minor officials back on Hame. And when new Sages get elected by the College of High Clerics we have a festival that lasts damn near a month long! And half the week is filled with church services cause everyone wants to show how zealous and pious and respectful they are. My dad for instance. He would drag me out of bed just to go hear stuffy old Grand Master Yordon preach about slaughtering the heretics and his time in the Second War of Haman Succession."

After each question they would wait to see how Xaiah responded.

"Cozy" Xaiah replied; setting down his drink and turning his head to stare out the window. After a moment, he turned back to look at Ayanona before continuing. "It's polite of you to say so, but there's no need to sugar coat things. This place." he paused for a moment... "This place has never been a kind one... There are times I feel like it hates us almost as much as we hate it, but the centuries have made it our home, and molded us into the people we are today." For better or worse he quietly added to himself. "If you're truly curious about our culture and traditions however. a tour of some of the local museums and libraries could be easily arranged... I wouldn't do the telling any justice to be honest."

"As for the food" he added. "I've always preferred simpler fare such as this; stews, sandwiches, salads, thick, warm breads.. I wasn't raised in high society you see... A table such as this though is quite representative of the common fare preferred by most Nyteborne throughout the Empire; though eating certain things in a specific order is a fairly common practice... The order is different from planet to planet however."

"I would recommend the Amasec however" he added almost as an afterthought... Conveniently taking a sip from his own glass of said beverage. "I do believe there's something like two or three thousand different varieties and flavors currently. The '57 Covinne Red is a personal favorite" he added while swirling his drink around within the glass before taking another sip.

As things progressed, and Telvar asked about the Nytelords, Xaiah became a bit more tight lipped on providing details concerning the topic. "I'm afraid I'm not quite comfortable going into the details of our military training practices at this time" he started. "The soldiers you've likely seen thus far though are commonly referred to as Nytelords however. Originally, they weren't actually soldiers at all" he continued; with a thoughtful look on his face. "They started out as my father's honor guard originally; though that was several centuries ago." A pained expression appeared for the briefest moment on Xaiah's face, though it was gone quickly enough and he continued. "Their numbers grew quickly however, and today, they're more shock infantry than honor guard; though they still fulfill that task as well; on a rotational basis for the most part mind you."

"The computers in your rooms should have some of the basic information on them, and our military in general; basic training included if I recall correctly... That should be able to answer some of your questions at least."

It was Elio's question about his coronation however that got the biggest response from the Emperor as the glass in the Emperor's hand did not survive it intact; shattering as it did in a sudden death grip, and the look of bitterness and regret that appeared on his face was not so quickly concealed this time. Wrapping up his now bleeding hand in a clean cloth from the table, and cleaning up the small mess of broken glass and spilled Amasec, he waved off their concerns quickly enough nonetheless.

Blinking slowly several times and calming down, he did choose to reply however. "Normally, there would have been several days of pomp and ceremony; parades, speeches, and the like; I would have probably hated every second of it too" he quipped darkly. "I never had the chance to go through with any of that however. The...circumstances of my fathers death were...messy, and the weeks following were not much better, so the ceremonial foolishness was actually bypassed as there were other things that were considered to be a bit more important at the time; such as restoring order, and cleaning up the mess; a process that is still ongoing as you've probably seen" he continued; casually gesturing towards the window and the clear view of the clean-up and reconstruction efforts that were clearly still underway.

"Now, if you'll excuse me, I really should get this seen too" Xaiah said; gesturing with his wrapped up hand. "I'll see you again in three days for our 'official' meeting. Feel free to make use of the intervening time however you will. The guard stationed at the door to your rooms will be able to arrange anything you should like or need."

They each took note of the Emperor's responses to their questions. When the glass was shattered, Ayanona gasped lightly while Elio looked on in shock and a slight wince of worry. Telvar stayed stoic, simply watching and listening.

Elio realized now that some details of this Emperor's life were likely left obscure for good reason and he was divided: would this hurt relations outright? He thought it would be a challenge now to present items to Xaiah without potential retribution. Elio kept this inside, though his partners likely noticed his worry on his face.

"Do you need help at all Sir?" Elio asked almost standing up when the Nyteborne Emperor stood. Doubtless he would brush it aside and leave, and Elio simply said "I am sorry for the inconvenience Xaiah, I hope you heal quickly."

When he left, the diplomats were left speechless in the room. They finished their food and departed for their rooms. Telvar told the Nuncio and his partner that she would retire to her part of their rooms while Elio and Ayanona would go to theirs. The Nuncio requested to one of the Nyteborne Guards two things: That a bottle of Amasec be sent to their chamber, and that a tour to whichever Museum in Halcon had Imperial and Cultural history be arranged for them tomorrow.

Later That Evening

Elio and Ayanona lounged in bed, nearly on the verge of sleep. The Nuncio was troubled and Ayanona could tell. "I'm not going to sleep with all your bad energy in the air" she pouted finally after a half hour of trying to nod off. She looked at him and said "is it still about dinner."

"Of course it is" Elio sighed "we just threw this man's hospitality in his face. Asked him about his personal life and clearly passed some boundary we missed! Now I probably made him closed to us opening further relations. At best I'll be sacked by the sages, at worst, I could end up dead here, fifty thousand light years from Hame..."

"Shush" Ayanona said. "Hear me out for a minute... how were we going to know anything about personal boundaries? He invited us to enjoy a casual buffet with him. He told us to call him Xaiah. And... he might not have told us anything deep but he was at least open with us about some details. If anything Telvar might have gone too far asking about their training regimens even though I know it came from a place of respect."

"Hm" Elio hummed.

"And second, if you were listening instead of silently panicking, he said and I quote: "I will see you in three days for our official visit". The talks are not off."

Elio sighed "you are right love. Ugh, Damnation, I just feel a fool for touching a sour memory. You know I'm not a strong psychic but I could feel it. It was potent enough."

"All the more reason not to despair. Now we know, and you can continue the dialogue to matters of state. You know that the trouble that is apparently plaguing this Nation is bugging him to his core. If we can offer him help, if you can tell him that the Mind Empire is going to be of real assistance to him... a broken glass in hand is hardly worth crying over."

Elio sighed again, "thank you as always for making me see we still have an opportunity here dear." He gave her a quick kiss. They were asleep within fifteen minutes.

Shortly after the Nuncio and his parties return to their rooms, there would be a knock on the door. A nondescript palace servant in simple, dark, easily forgettable attire would be stood there with two things held on a tasteful looking silver tray. A bottle of Amasec resting in a bucket of ice; which, interestingly enough just so happened to be a bottle of the '57 Covinne Red that the Emperor confessed to being quite partial to during dinner, and a carefully folded piece of thick, antique parchment which listed; over a period of several hours, trips to a trio of museums for the Nuncio and his party to visit starting late the following morning and ending early-to-mid afternoon.

The following morning, the Nuncio, his party, and the ever present squad of silent, escorting Nytelords would make their way from the palace via a small convoy of nondescript ground vehicles; if two vehicles could be considered to be a convoy that is...

Their first stop would be the Hall of Remembrance, the foremost national history museum in the entirety of the Interstellar Empire. Here, the Nuncio and his party would be able to learn of the history of the Nyteborne and the founding of the Interstellar Empire as they toured the large ringlike building and took in the mixture of physical artifacts, curios, display pieces, and holographic displays that reenacted important historic moments such as the Nyteborne's arrival in the Nostromo system, the rise of the old guilds and banks which eventually overthrew the Nyteborne's original Democratic government set up by the early Nyteborne, some fairly graphic scenes depicting some of the atrocities perpetrated by the guilds on the common peopleduring their centuries long reign of terror, the rise of Conrad Curze; the first Emperor of the Interstellar Empire of Nyte, and Xaiah Morningstar's father, and so on...

Their second stop would be the Imaginarium; a museum that focused on culture, art, and music from various periods of the Empires several centuries of history.

Their third, and final destination would be the Majestic; a three hundred year old dreadnaught that had been landed in Halcon and converted into a museum ship after being decommissioned. The Majestic displayed several examples of "antique" military weapons, vehicles, and aerospace craft, and even had a "functional" training course where visitors could get suited up in older models of power armor and run a free-for-all style obstacle course using nonlethal weaponry...

The Nuncio and his party would return to their rooms with, hopefully, a somewhat better understanding of the Interstellar Empire and of the Nyteborne as well.

The trip to the three museums (in addition to the wine) were met with joy by the party of the Nuncio. In each venue they were able to examine and take in more details about the culture of the Nyteborne. Elio Ephron and his companions each took away some details about their hosts from each place. There were a couple of art pieces, some of the livlier natural pieces, which Ayanona and Elio each noted as telling them something seemingly contradictory but oddly on point for the people of Nyte. Meanwhile: at the military museum Elio and Telvar sparred with each other in mechanized suits in the mock training range, and Telvar later remarked on how similar some of it was to training she engaged with in the fleet. Elio used this data to put together some talking points for the eventual discussion which he was glad would proceed as planned.

When that day came:
Three days hence and the party was ready to meet with the Emperor and possibly his advisors again. They would inform their companion guardians that they were ready and follow them to the designated location. Elio thought to himself as they travelled: “I wonder how Emperor Xaiah will take my proposals. They are straightforward, and I have thought long about what we ought to say, shall he accept the plan?”

Ayanona heard his thoughts and thought back to him psychically: “love this will go well. Be confident.” He took her words to heart, and Telvar nodded with a dinosaur like eye of approval which helped bolster the Nuncio’s morale. Together the three went to the designated conference space and began to prepare for their meeting with the Emperor. Elio prepared his papers with blueprints from the High Sages and his own notes with proposals to present to the Emperor and his cabinet. They would await his pleasure to begin...

The council chamber that had been set aside for this meeting was the same one that had previously been used by Xaiah's father for meetings with his advisory council. The room itself was reasonably sized, though it seemed claustrophobically small due to the massive circular table that dominated the rooms floor. The giant hunk of platinum laced sapphire that was the table seemed even larger than usual for it's relative emptiness as the current advisory council was still presently less than half the size his fathers had been.

Xaiah himself sat at the 'head' of the table; a spot marked by a slightly raised segment in the table itself, and a more ornate chair; though one falling well short of being able to be described as a throne. A few other menials and guards were also scattered about fulfilling their duties as the Nuncio and his party was announced and shown into the room. Computer terminals similar to the ones found in their rooms were set up for the Nuncio to make use of; connected to holoprojectors and view screens that had been brought in specifically for this meeting on the likely chance that the Nuncio would need to make use of them while making the Mind Empire's proposal.

"Welcome Nuncio Elio Ephron of the Mind Empire of Lotrabme" Xaiah began before going on to introduce the rest of the Nuncio's party as well. Changing to address his advisory council he continued. "Our first, and only item on the agenda for today is the proposal from the Mind Empire; the basics of which are on your personal terminals... At this point, I will hand over the floor to the Nuncio to present the Mind Empire's proposal in full. All questions, comments and debate will be withheld until the Nuncio has completed his presentation of the proposal; there will be no interruptions."

The nine advisors answered with a series of simple affirmative nods and murmurs of assent before they all turned their attention to the Nuncio.

"Nuncio" Xaiah continued. "The floor is yours..."

Nyte wrote:"Welcome Nuncio Elio Ephron of the Mind Empire of Lotrabme" Xaiah began before going on to introduce the rest of the Nuncio's party as well.

As the Nuncio and his party scooted around the table to take their places they each respectfully acknowledged their introductions by the Emperor. Elio took a quick moment to check that his files and data chips to use in the projectors were correct, and then at Xaiah's bidding, he stood and prepared himself.

"Your majesty..." he said in Xaiah's direction. "... and members of the Advisory Council..." he said facing each of the members present.

"I'll not bog you down with too much detail, though I am happy to take whatever questions you have as soon as I am done with this summary of our plan. I have been given an initiative by my executives, the High Sages, to offer you a chance to make good on our Trade Agreement. I offer you the keys to the Beta Quadrant and all it's riches."

"The Sages approached me with this initiative a mere two weeks ago, having reviewed their budget and found room for this project which they believe will make ample returns." At the word "returns" Elio turned on the holo-projectors, which showed a pair of large portals with one of the Mind Empire's trade vessels for scale. The two portals had diameters of 30 kilometers. Each had small attachments as well. He continued.

"Our scientists have been researching more efficient and safe means of projecting portals into phase space. With a supply of Red Matter and the aid of our psychic maintenance teams, we are willing to give you the latest generation in portal technologies to offer as a direct highway from your frontier of Sigma 161 to our system Karo-Darnell, where we have recently established a frontier trade post."

"In those systems" he said with purpose "we can streamline the process of our merchants having to transverse the Delta quadrant, famous for it's warfare and danger to mercantile ventures, and offer each-other havens for our vessels on near opposite ends of the Milky Way. This would be beneficial to both of us as your merchants could access the nations along the Twin Eagles Corridor and throughout the Beta Quadrant with greater ease, while we would gain the ability to trade with the powers of northernmost Gamma and Delta."

"Before you ask, you may be wondering how we plan to establish this portal and maintain it. I have the information here, which I am willing to expand on if you have greater concerns. First the fuel: Red Matter. It is a rare but abundant resource and we have been locating it and refining it for centuries. IRDaC is willing under the current budget to offer enough to provide you with one standard year's worth of fuel free of charge, and will at your behest either sell the fuel to you at a reduced "Alliance Rate" or offer you scouters to mine and refine your own. Meanwhile, to maintain the connection between the portals, we can offer some of our well-trained and talented psychic adepts who are professionals in the art of navigating and clearing portions of psy-space and phase-space for travel. They will only need your guarantee of safety, and if you wish to train your own cadre of portal maintainers we can assemble a training team for you within the period of construction."

"Which brings me to my other point, the construction of the portals themselves. We have the infrastructure necessary to complete our node in Karo-Darnell. For the node in Sigma 161 we have two options available. We can either send you the designs yourself and you can construct it at your leisure with a stipend for the cost of construction, which might be the more expedient path. You can also let us send you the portal, though it will have to travel with one of our Nomadic traders and could take up to one and a half standard years to arrive."

"That time scale alone should tell you that this portal system which offers to cut down travel time between us to a single standard week would be a boon to our ability to conduct safe and regular business. Our Empires stand to gain greater, easier access to each-other and to the galaxy at large."

"The High Sages offer this freely to you with only hopes of our continued and expanded prosperity. We think that the bonds of friendship between the Lotrabmeit faithful and the Nyteborne people would only be enhanced. If you reject this offer, our trade agreement and non-aggression pact will remain as they have stood. I believe however that you would only stand to gain from this offering. That is all for my summary, if you need me to clarify any details I would be happy to."

The Nuncio ceded the floor with a shoulder-bow in the direction of the Emperor. He waited for his approval to sit or to answer whatever questions he might receive.

There was some delay as Xaiah and his advisors took in the proposal from the Nuncio... Previously prepared notes were quickly examined and compared, and some murmurs and bickering from among the Emperor's advisors flew quickly; if quietly back and forth across the table. Xaiah, for the most part, seemed to just quietly take it all in; calmly watching the Nuncio and his party instead; though he was most certainly listening to the quick, quiet debate going on among his advisors as well.

"Gentlemen... Ladies..." Xaiah finally intoned as the back and forth finally died down. "I take it that you have reached a consensus on this matter?"

"Not quite..." The gravely sounding reply came from a large hooded figure; prematurely silencing one of the other advisors just as they had opened their mouth to reply.

Xaiah tipped his head slightly in the mans direction. "Very well... The floor is yours then Victor."

The man; a former Nytelord, and one of the few on the council who could actually claim to be the Emperor's friend rather than simply a political appointee got up slowly, and with the whine of extensive bionics.

"There is a matter of security" Victor spoke; slowly, and with some difficulty. "You've offered to send us the blueprints for this gate, and the equipment we would need to mine the fuel for it ourselves... Two things that I will admit, make me somewhat more comfortable with the offer... There's just one catch however... You've mentioned 'psychic' adepts as navigators..." There was a sound something like small rocks grinding together which could be deciphered to be laughter; if laughter were to sound painful. There's just one problem with that" he continued. "There are no Nyteborne psychics... Never have been... Probably never will be."

"So, Nuncio... Would we be reliant on some of YOUR nations psychics to run one of these things and maintain this connection between these gates?... They very well may be as reliable as you say they are, but I can't claim to be totally comfortable with this deal if we'd have to rely on non Nyteborne to keep it running good and proper... So, Nuncio, is there a solution for this or no?"

"Nuncio" the Emperor asked; clearly waiting for the Nuncio's reply.

Elio deflated a bit, though he did his best not to show it. This old cyborg reminded him of old men from the Imperial core, including his uncles and great uncles who served with the Sevashi Stellarii. To be called out by them was always a matter of good manners and of high expectations. Luckily, Elio was not entirely without an answer to this question.

“I am a bit disheartened to hear that there are no local psychics” he replied “only because I thought perhaps this accommodation might not be an issue.” Shrugging he said “that is a reasonable concern Master Victor, I do not expect you to trust too many of our agents here to make our project work. Psychics are the most efficient way of keeping the gates aligned. However, we can “boostrap” an AI core-brain or core-brains to make it work. I’ll ellaborate…”

Clicking up a diagram of the gates function, he displayed a full network and the phase space between artfully rendered in a hologram. “In the full-psychic alignment, we usually have a team of at least fifteen psychic adepts channelling the gates to each other. These are not run of the mill individuals mind you, they are taught from adolescence in specialized academies for their work, and any apprentices employed by our gates are overseen by skilled masters. They are taught to monitor the channels of phase-space between psyspace and realspace, the medium of the gates. The Mind Empire prefers live channelling, because they can accurately account for phase anomalies as they appear and maintain a consistent connection between two long separated gates.”

“However, we have had situations where adepts and apprentices could not maintain the gate alone, and to assist their channelling specialized AI core-brains have been developed to help with high speed monitoring of the other dimensions. If you do not wish to host a team of our own psychics, and you do not have any of your own to train, we could help you craft an AI core-brain or team of brains to stand in for the biological element.”

“The only risk to this solution is the overall consistency of the connection. It WILL work if properly maintained, and we have a few examples in the Mind Empire of it working. Sometimes the core-brains have difficulty differentiating gravity shadows from phase-storms in real time, and need alignment checks to account for the proper motion of stars in the galaxy. We recommend those checks take place every five years. These are all correctable issues that if you are willing to have an AI-technician advise, we can teach your specialists how to do.”

Elio turned his attention to both the Emperor and Victor. “I hope your majesty, and Master Victor, that this solution will be amenable. If properly maintained the Core-brain should provide a consistent link. I understand the desire for national security, this is our best bet for doing that without a local population of psychics to train.”

Victor Morrow remained silent for some time after the Nuncio's explanation; head cocked slightly to one side in thought as he seemed to be staring not actually at the Nuncio, but rather almost into his soul... He'd never been one to trust easily; the result of a hard, violent life, and a career as a military man in which betrayal had nearly ended him on several occasions. After a few awkward moments of silence, he turned to the Emperor and simply nodded his head in affirmation; conveying his approval of the solution that the Nuncio offered...

The Interstellar Empire already had a well grounded understanding of producing and developing sophisticated and robust artificial intelligence's... With the appropriate information; and several examples to work off of, this would be a suitable, if not an entirely elegant solution, and would allow the Interstellar Empire to maintain their security as their paranoia dictated. Typical Nyteborne over-engineering and redundancy would likely prove a match for any possible issues with consistency.

"Well Nuncio" the Emperor began. "It seems we can come to a workable solution using this method. The appropriate people will be contacted on our end, and if you could provide them with the necessary information, then I see no reason for us to delay..."

"And now, for the fun part" Xaiah continued; sounding more like he was rather dreading the next bit... "Signing all of the appropriate and necessary paperwork."

Elio Ephron produced the appropriate documents from the Mind Empires end within the minute and approached the Emperor and his council for the necessary signatures. While most of it was digital and merely required a drawn or typed confirmation in Imperial Bureaucratic Code-Script from each of the signatories, one set of documents for commissioning the gate construct itself included printed blueprints and associated paper contracts. The Nuncio informed the Emperor and his advisors that they could sign in their native script which he and his diplomatic associates in the Mind Empire could "authorize" them as legal with a corresponding translation for ease of future readers. If anyone asked about this, Elio said "you'd be surprised how many Hamans actually read the fine print."

It would take the better part of an hour for the Nuncio to confirm that all signatures had been made on his part, and he would likewise take great care to make sure he signed all of the Nyteborne documents carefully. For those that needed his own signature and those of his companions as witnesses, they each had their own calligraphic signature, both text and a symbol of themselves. Elio also carried an ornate physical and digital seal of the High Sages. This seal left a mark with the All-Seeing Eye surrounded by seven six-pointed stars and encircled with the motto "Malo Mori Quam Solveret Foedus." (I prefer death than to break the covenant)

The Nuncio would await the Emperor's orders for what to do next, when they were dismissed, he would forward everything to the Sages for their approval and to set the machines in motion at home.

The contracts covering the new agreement were closely examined, and finding that everything was indeed as had been agreed upon, the process of dotting all of the I's and crossing all of the T's went swiftly enough as far as paperwork can go swiftly. The appropriate signatures, initials, and seals were all applied in the necessary places, and each party had their own copies; both physical and digital.

"Well Nuncio" Xaiah began. "It seems that our business here is complete... I'd recommend you enjoy the next few days. Maybe partake in a little tourism if you and your companions would like. I'll have my people arrange for your return trip to your peoples embassy at Hyperion in the mean time, and you can expect to be informed of the details for that by the end of the day."

With that, the meeting was officially at it's end, and the associated persons involved from both sides began to make their way from the meeting chambers; some singly, some in small groups softly discussing matters... The talking and deal making was over now however, and the important work would soon be set to begin...
