Disagreeing with family on politics

Postby Sanghyeok » Sat Oct 24, 2020 5:03 pm

Families often have disagreements for their opinions on issues, which can include politics. Obviously, this can be a major issue, since disagreements with one's family members during political discussion can show differences in core values. Such disagreements can result in breaking down of harmonious relations inside the family. So, should we not discuss politics with family is our gap is too great and there cannot be productive conversation? Or should we try to risk discussion anyways, and try to maintain civil conversation at the risk of breaking of bonds? How much should we risk, and when should we discuss with a family members that disagrees with us, if at all? Let's discuss below.

In my opinion, it is important to discuss politics with one's family even if there is a difference, as long as you believe you are right. We have a duty to preserve bonds with our immediate family, but we also owe it to greater society to advance our core values.

Different members of my family have very different views in politics (for example, different members are strongly pro-Trump or pro-Biden, view Breitbart/Drudge Report or CNN as being neutral enough to be vaguely useful sources of information, etc.). When discussing politics with them, I tend to be evasive and vague about my own views, and usually just listen to what they say.

So I don’t really state my own views or give my opinion regarding theirs, meaning that I wouldn’t be surprised if different people in my family simultaneously hold different opinions as to my political views.

My immediate family is all liberal, and the rest is mostly far right. They argue with each other and I argue with them all, though we still get along fairly well.

Me and my family barely talk about politics and I think that's for the best. I rather not let this current political climate ruin my family relations.

There are quite a number of political issues that I vehemently disagree with my bf on, such as Brexit and others.

My parents have fully bought into the Trump personality cult and everything that goes with it, so yeah I don't like to talk with them at all since they will inevitably try to turn any discussion political, and from there an infantile shouting match.

There was a point at which my folks drank the Kool Aid and were glued to FOX all day -- I simply said, "I am not going to get drawn into this discussion with you. I love you too much to fight over this."

After 4 yrs of the current clown, my mom's changed her views and choice of newschannel -- all without me ever arguing with her.

Most of my political interaction with my family is some of them sending me far-right propaganda and me refuting them, so I wouldn't say we argue.

A few years ago my family was quite hostile to seeing I had literature by Keynes in my room and I was told I should stop being socialist. I don't know how they would react to knowing I've actually become a leftist, so I pretend to be a social democrat supporter.

My advice to all of you is, never tell your family and friends who think differently than you on politics, directly or indirectly I am right and you are wrong based on Facts.

Decided by you who strongly disagrees with them, and they strongly disagree with you.

Just state your political views and leave it there, like I do.

In my family, we all happen to be Proud Cuban American, Hispanic, Latino, Republican Trump supporters. Many of our friends are too.

We respect without political insults those who think differently than we do on Trump and the Republicans.

This respect is given it is not earned.

It is called Democracy in the USA and other such nations.

Like on Republican President Trump or any political issues.

I Rest My Case.

Dad is a right winger. Me and my siblings are basically socialists, and mom is politically liberal (center-left) and socially right wing.

My dad doesn't like my anti cop stance despite being harassed by the police himself as a kid. My mom meanwhile doesn't like my belief that behavior is based on environment on not genes, since she claims the Mediterranean race is superior to Slavs.

Respect their opinion, their upbringing, and focus on finding common value, and never debate. When talking about religion, I always frame it as "I find part X in Islam questionable because of Y, why do you think it's the case?" And then we try to find info on the internet together, and discuss rather than a debate. I never frame it as "Islam is wrong because of Y".

It depends on the individual more than the ideology, though the liberal side is less crazy. Besides family, though, most of my friends are leftists.

It's very odd in my family. There are democratic socialists and social democrats two generations above mine, but the generation above mine is extremely socially conservative. I was taught that LGBT people are not natural, for example, and even today I don't discuss with them on this issue.

The rule is talk about American politics. Firstly because while we all disagree with each other we all agree American politics are stupid and no one likes Trump. Secondly because Gran (dad's side) is very pro Apartheid still and last family reunion her and other Gran were probably going to kill each other about the topic if they hadn't been separated.

My mom wasn't pleased when she found out I was attracted to a girl who was Croatian. Unfortunately my mother's biological racism makes it hard for me to ever introduce her to any girl I'm with unless said girl is from Southern Europe/The Middle East/North Africa or East Asia or obviously Latin America.
