Welcome to the White Winter Queendom of Græntfjall for the 30th edition of the International Basketball Championship. For IC purposes, this tournament will be known as “IBC30”, because Græntfjall does not have any tradition of Roman numbering. 48 teams will be vying for the title, beginning with a double round-robin group stage before heading to a single elimination bracket. This thread is reserved for roleplays and rosters relating to the tournament; please place any OOC comments or questions in the signup thread. If you wish to speak to me directly please contact me via TG or on Discord.

If you are new to NS Sports roleplaying, take a look at the guide to how things work around here, or glance at the previous edition of this particular competition. In IC terms this tournament is considered to be played using international rules, and uses a scorinator based on that. Here is a summary of the differences between FIBA, NBA, and NCAA rules.

You are encouraged to post a roster listing your team including players, any relevant details, and permissions. The four semi finalists from IBC29 provide differing examples of how to compose a roster and what kind of details to include. In strictly IC terms, a roster size of 12 players would be expected. Style modifiers are not being used.

Tournament-wide permissions:

• COVID-19 does not exist in Græntfjall and you may not RP its introduction to the country. If you wish to RP COVID or similar pandemic storylines, please do so only in a way that allows other countries not to interact with them.
• While you can RP things like players scuffling or fans getting rowdy, please don’t RP major acts of violence on Græntfjaller soil. Anything that rises to the level of questioning the security competence of the host nation is off-limits.

Group Draw

A group draw was conducted at the headquarters of Körfuknattleikssamband Græntfjalls in Háttmark. The draw involved sorting teams into ranked pots and spamming the RNG button. Once seeded groups were produced, they were then randomized again to produce random schedules.

The top two teams in each group will proceed to a Round of 16, with the single elimination bracket taking place from Nov 11 – 14.

Super Skill Contests


“Squawk! Now for something completely different!”

At the end of the group stage there will be a break day on which no games will be scorinated; instead, three individual skill contests will take place. Entry is completely optional; if you don’t want your players to take part, you can have them put their feet/hooves/tentacles up and enjoy their rest day in peace, or if they’ve been eliminated book an early flight home.

If you do wish your players to take part, simply note who will be competing, either as part of your roster post, or in a separate post, by the break day halfway through the group stage.

Rules:

1. There are three skills contests (Three Point Shooting, Skills, and Slam Dunk).
   
2. Each nation entering IBC30 may submit 1-2 players to each contest. The first player will be guaranteed entry, the second will be a reserve to be used depending on overall numbers.
   
3. Each nation can enter all three contests; however, no individual player from each nation can enter more than contest.
   
4. The events will be scorinated with modified xkoranate sport files to generate appropriate results. Results will factor team rankings, RP bonus, and randomness.

[Graintfjall]

The White Winter Queendom of Græntfjall is a nation located in Rushmore. Thanks to the wonders of fluid time *sparkly magic noises* this tournament is taking place in the depths of the Græntfjaller winter. Outside, ice, snow, and occasional outbreaks of frost giants are to be expected; inside, the toasty warm arenas will host a series of games supported by enthusiastic, if not wholly knowledgeable, fans of the game of basketball which has a growing presence in the country. Each group will be based in various cities around the country, while the knockout stages will take place exclusively in the capital.

Red Group

Kyrkdorf is a city at the foothills of the Græntfjaller Alps, which dominate the southern half of the country. It is home to the most successful basketball team in the country. Teams will play at the small, but newly refurbished Kyrkdorf MSK Arena.

Orange Group

Aigsvinger lies a few miles north of Kyrkdorf, and spans the fork in the Odinsfluss river. Given the strong regional divisions in Græntfjall between east and west, its position acusp that divide has always marked it as something of an outlier. It hosts a large folk music festival each year. Games will be played at the Aigsvinger MSK MultiSport Park.

Yellow Group

Waltenberg is Græntfjall’s premier university city, home of the famous, if unimaginatively named, University of Waltenberg. Politically it was the center of intellectual resistance to the Communist regime and many of its ancient buildings bear the scars of the bitter overthrow of the regime. UW has a collegiate system; the College of the House of God will host the group stage games at their Big Cup Sports Park.

Green Group

Griesberg is another university city. Unlike Waltenberg, it was staunchly pro-regime during the Communist years; ironically, this means its pre-regime architecture is far better preserved, having not been subject to brutal military suppression. The College of Lovers’ Athletic Arena hosts games; unlike most of the other venues in the country, title banners from the Communist era are still proudly adorned there.

Blue Group

Kuodorf is a suburb of Háttmark, the capital, located to the south east. Unlike the north of the river industrial suburbs it’s always been affluent and the Kuodorf MSK Basketball Arena is, unlike many other MSK arenas, purpose built for a single sport. Set amid quaint villas and with a housing density that would make an urban planner sit down and weep, it’s one of the more pleasant group stage settings.

Indigo Group

Hagejoki is another Háttmark suburb, this one located north of the river. It lies on the coast at the far eastern edge of the city limits. Home of the main housing blocks of the University of Háttmark, it has a large student population. It hasn’t undergone the urban renovation of nearby Steinaux – frankly, it’s something of a dump – but it has a lively nightlife. Hagejoki Play Park is the largest arena to be hosting group stage games.

Violet Group

Hofvinger is Græntfjall’s northern exclave. Control of this port city has fluctuated over the years and is home to a large naval base. It’s always been slightly ‘different’, with its hardy folk (the weather here is even bitterer than in the mainland) regarding themselves as superior to the soft southern mainlanders. North Wolf Bay Park is a relatively new purpose built arena; it’s housed in what used to be a nuclear submarine base.

Octarine Group

Altendalur is Græntfjall’s westernmost city. An industrial powerhouse with a large working class population, pretty unreconstructed from the Communist days from which it not-so-secretly still pines, vanguard of the western schism that hates the easterners. It’s the warmest city (which is not saying all that much) and visitors might be able to survive with only two or three coats on. The Florus Basketball Arena is a new, purpose-built arena, very modern, but thus far lacking much in attraction to the football-obsessed locals.

In common with other Græntfjaller teams, the Super Wolves have size and strength – but not pace or skill. They are also, how to put this delicately: a team of “scrappy gym rats”. Now to put it indelicately: they’re painfully white. The team’s offense is run through Noel Skíðisson, who led Kyrkdorf to an improbable Cinderella semi-final run in the recent IUBC; an ephemeral shoot-first-ask-questions-later combo guard. His backcourt partner Tom Farmasson looks to have a more limited offensive set but shoots 90% from the line and is an excellent perimeter defender with great size for his position. Henning Sandelsson is a wing shooter with below-average D. Up front is a twin-towers pairing of Auðunar Kristdórsson and the exciting young talent Benjamin Iirosson. Both are defensive stalwarts but offensively limited, while Auðunar would be vulnerable to hack-a-Shaq if anyone could figure out a word to rhyme with his name. On the bench is a mixture of 3 point specialists and defenders.

There was one thing the Sarzonian national basketball team is facing in their third straight appearance in the International Basketball Championships that didn't follow them in their first two appearances. Expectations.

When the Stars returned from an extended absence in IBC 28, they were unranked and took an unknown team with former coach Matt Walton seeking to reclaim their long lost glory days. They went 0-3 and completely fell off the radar. When they returned in IBC 29, they were 82nd ranked in the world and faced a group that featured the then-eighth ranked Valanora and then-15th ranked Xanneria. The Stars went 7-3 under first-time coach Thomas Manningham and qualified for the knockout rounds as the team played in an empty venue due to the SARS 2 novel Coronavirus outbreak that claimed the lives of 28,000 Sarzonians.

Now? The Stars will return to a packed Palestra on Matchday 2 against unranked Central Shaneville and are in the Green Group, which features fourth ranked Royal Kingdom of Quebec, a ZSeparatists side that are level at 21st, and Sylestone and The Grearish Union as the other unranked sides. Manningham cautioned against his team taking what may at first blush appear to be an easy group lightly.

"Remember, we weren't expected to compete for a knockout round berth and we did," Manningham reminded reporters. "We hung with Valanora on their court and we almost beat them at ours. We beat Xanneria twice. No one expected us to do anything last time and we did, so we can't afford to take any matches for granted."

Sarzonia also have the added expectations that come with a championship, as they won the Gold Coast Basketball Tournament in Northwest Kalactin using so-called NBA rules. The Stars finished undefeated after a five-point victory over the hosts in their opening game and crushed Banija by 26 points in a widely watched semifinal. This tournament uses international basketball rules, including 10-minute quarters. The Stars entered that tournament to prepare for the IBC.

"After we played 48-minute matches, this format will feel like a break to us," guard Mike West said. "We're ready."

The Stars may not enter the IBC as favourites to win the tournament as they did in years past, when Sarzonia qualified for the IBC finals seven consecutive times and won four titles, but West, son of legendary Stars manager Henry West, quickly reminded observers that this is a different era.

"We were well established as a power in the sport when my father managed the team," Mike West said. "We're trying to get back to that and make some history of our own.

The Stars parlayed a successful appearance in IBC 29 into the 15th rank in the multiverse, but they are ranked 10th among the teams competing now. That places a target on the team's backs, but Manningham is fine with that.

"People won't be able to take a victory against us for granted," he said. "We'd better be prepared."

About Vykta
Vykta is a relatively small nation of 24 million people residing over the entirety a well populated Pangea-like continent of a gas giant's moon orbiting two G-Class binary stars, aptly named Surta A and B, the moon being termed Surta IVb. The society is considered to have Post-Modern Technology representing the theorised 2030s era in the popular massively multiplayer online video game IRLstates. The nation is led not by a single person, but a council of leaders elected from the six major settlements and their surrounding rural areas. Each settlement elects 48 councilors by voting for one party to elect proportionally from a closed list, with 12 councilors total being reserved for the rural areas, who vote in their own list as well as the statewide list. Vykta is also a direct democracy with a very socialist bent, although more focused on the Nordic system than any other, however post-scarcity has almost been achieved due to massive strides in Artificial Intelligence that may take the nation deep into Science Fantasy Technology.

Vyktan Culture
Vykta is a nation founded by lost colonists from a planet only remembered by the name Solar Three, though such name has been corrupted by the millennia that have passed since the ark ship crashed on the surface of Vykta, forcing the 100,000 surviving colonists, that is... 10% of the original ark fleet to start again from essentially the stone age. Their culture essentially blossomed from the diversity and camaraderie shown during those early years from that catastrophic event, and as the world was become theirs, they still remembered the extreme climate heating that destroyed their home planet. Though Vykta's citizens are certainly humanoid in appearance, the 10,000 years of evolution on a planet where reptilians had dominated for æons had made them much more resemble horned and scaly reptilians themselves, than their old softer skinned forms with hair on their heads.

Vyktan Sports
Vyktans however, never truly forgot the rules of the three main sports on their home planet, though they had evolved somewhat in the playing skills, the rules had been pretty much set in stone to multiverse standards from the outset after the discovery of the multiverse portal system soon after the formation of the national government. The three sports are Kickball (aka Soccer), Hoopball (aka Basketball) and Gridball (American football). These sports have regular national tournaments, though recent history is unavailable as the national leagues are currently under extensive redevelopment.

An athletic magic man with great ball handling, Jorge is one of the best players on the team. Draws lots of fouls on offense and can move around anyone. Once recorded with a 44 inch vertical jump, he is a force to be reckoned with.

A big man with lots of tools, Chris can bring his power to any part of the game. He focuses on no particular part, but is strong in all areas.

Big, Strong, Center. Great on both sides of the ball, although does struggle a good bit from the charity stripe. Look for him to over power opponents in the paint, and try to force balls out to wing on defense.

Young, classic center. Has lots of strength, although can’t seem to figure out mid-range balls.

About the country

Hebitaka is a country with a thriving population of over a billion. The country is highly ethnic with mainly thirty-nine states ruled by the king. The country has three main types of culture- Indian, East Asian and French. The country has good favor for sports and the fans are here to support their national team to play in the International Basketball Championship.

Sports and Hebitaka

Hebitaka is new in the sports world with the population mainly supports the domestic teams and other countries in the international championship. But this lasted until this year. The Hebitaki teams participated in the GCF world T20, the IFC and IBC 30 this season. Even though it had a poor result in the IFC, the country hopes better results in the other tournaments. The country's most popular team sport is Cricket followed by Rugby(Union), Football and Basketball.

I know, seriously, how the hell does basketball even have a presence in Squidroidia? Truth be told, it barely does. The sport, aside from schools and the local leisure center, is unknown. There are some organized leagues for high school, college and leisure centers, but there is no professional league to speak of. Inklings are also shorter in height than humans, and seeing as they are the only ones playing the sport, they don't do dunks that often, if at all. In the leisure center leagues, there might be 1 or 2 dunks a season. Nevertheless the Inkling basketball playstyle is about jumpers, 2 or 3 points, as the squids try to use their jumps to their advantage on the court.

RWEKAZA CITY REPORT ON THIS TEAM
The Rwekaza City's is really nice really in the paint.
Most important is that the Rwekaza city ballers are healthy.
But there should be a degree of concern with the results. All five of the Rwekaza city' games have been within five points in the last five minutes, but it's been their worst five-game stretch of defense (111.9 points allowed per 100 possessions) of the season.
The next three games don't mean anything for the Ballers, who have clinched the league's best record for a second straight season. The first two games (and maybe the third) don't mean anything for their opponents either, and the Rwekaza city ballers will have the luxury of a first-round series against a below-.500 and not-completely-healthy opponent. So minutes for the starters could be limited this week.

Welcome to Squidroidian basketball.

Yes, it isn't flashy. Yes, it doesn't attract big crowds. But you know what it is? A hivemind for the best speed and power focused Inklings that isn't football. Even though the Inklings in the sport aren't tall enough to lay down a dunk (Except for a couple of times during the domestic season) they still rely heavily on jumping. The Inklings are jumpers, laying down buckets with a hop and a flick of the wrist. And with the 30th International Basketball Championships, held in the cold of Græntfjall, these squids will take on the rest of the world. Or, at least, 5 nations from the rest of the world.

For you see, Squidroidia has competition in the prized Octarine Group, or Group H to non-Græntfjaller plebs. Aside from the defending world champions Newmanistan, there is some competition to be had. None more feared than Lochario, which will hold Squidroidia's first ever game in their national basketball team's history. The team, led by Lebran Jims, the side ranked 13th in basketball, did not participate in IBC 29 in Equestria. In IBC 28, back when The Cult of Motherbread, Furby Island, Tornado Queendom and Aldaveria played basketball, they made the Round of 16, only losing to, guess who, Free Republics. God it seems like for a nation that died in a ragestorm they still knew how to play basketball back then. Hell they got 3rd place in that tournament!

Republican rambling aside (God I should not do that again), the Ginger Tigers are looking to make the knockouts again after their unexpected absence in IBC 29. Newmanistan will likely get first, so the only thing between them and a likely Round of 16 berth (Unless the unrankeds surprise everyone) is HUElavia, who they will play the very next day after their game against the Inklings. The Inklings will play HUElavia on matchday 5, right after Newmanistan.

Now this a sight for sore eyes. Two long years after making our debut in the competition, the International Basketball Championship is back and this time with both familiarity and change. Graintfjall are the hosts this time, making their debut in international basketball in the process, but the format has remained the same - double round-robin and 6-team groups, although all games will be taking place in the host nation this time around (i.e. no Unity Centre this time, to the shock of Riverside). The Hoops-Jags of TJUN-ia enter this tournament now tied-15th in the world but with now 5th-ranked Valanora part of the same group once again, to will be interesting to see what has changed from 2 years ago. After finishing 4th with a 4-6 record in debut, the BFT will be looking to use the recent surge of interest in the "Amerika Quadruble Sports" (Gridiron Football, Basketball, Baseball and Ice Hockey) in order to see a drive towards the development of this still minor sport in the TJUN-ian circles.

When TJUN-ia made its debut at this competition, it followed the traditional method used by TJUN-ian teams past: Find players, send a bunch of coaches to do their thing then find outstanding coaches to lead the team full time for the 2nd time around. Even though IBC2 was 2 years ago, who would coach IBC30 was still in the air until a few weeks ago when the BFT finally made their choice. 34-year-old Bao Zhou was chosen to lead the team, the first-ever person from the CEA to ever managed a TJUN-ian team. Bao will be a pioneer no matter how he gets on but, as always, it's good to have some backups in case they are needed. If Bao fails to deliver then the keys could be handed to 2 JagBasers with great potential: Kim Carterson (aged 23) and Kasper Waterson (aged 30). For the new HC though, the goals have been set for this edition: Top 3 at a minimum.

Tuto Fallas is the starting center of the team. Tall and heavy, his defense is his calling card, being a big threat in the paint, and can swat shots coming into the paint. His lack of offensive awareness though allows opposing team defenders to focus on their assignments and not worry about double teaming inside the paint.

#5 - PG - Marcela Picazo Medel, 18, Female, native of Mandrid - 1.52 m, 58.9 kg
Nimble and quick, the Mandrid native is one of the speediest guards of the team, and has eagle eye vision that can quickly spot openings in offense and defense. She lacks composure though, and at the crucial moments, would crack under pressure and give away possessions in quick succession.

#6 - SF/SG - Maria Teresa Aurelio Pereyra, 19, Female, native of Vigano - 1.76 m, 77.9 kg
Known for her agility inside the paint, and is the resident slasher of the team. Her IQ is so high that she usually knows when to attack the basket and when to shoot the ball... the latter skill though she does not possess and is too hot-headed to earn quick technicals and probably ejections.

#7 - PF/C - Cecilio Casias Crespo, 20, Male, native of Cebuenas - 1.91 m, 95.2 kg
Go-to guy for postups and slam dunks. Has unusually a large amount of agility which contributes to his dunking ability. Is a big liability though in defense, either causing the team defensive three second violations or being caught so off position opposing teams can score that very easy basket.

#8 - SG/PG - Amatza Beicabengoechea Achaguren, 21, Female, native of Vallezul - 1.62 m, 68.1 kg
Usually plays together with her twin, Ameli, in the court. one-half of the three-and-D twins, and usually provide secondary three point shooting responsibilities. Unusually self sufficient half of the twins and performs even better without her in the court. Is a big defensive liability like Casias.

#9 - PG/SG - Ameli Beicabengoechea Achaguren, 21, Female, native of Vallezul - 1.62 m, 64.4 kg
Usually plays together with her twin, Amatza, in the court. one-half of the three-and-D twins, and usually provide perimeter defense responsibilities. Will not play in the court unless her twin is also in the court. Her unusually fetish of shooting and bricking threes is the main cause of her not given the starting nod.

#10 - PF/SF - Xalvador Aguila Nieto, 18, Male, native of Malklan - 1.84 m, 86.5 kg
Is the shooting big man of the roster. He can efficiently do the pick and pop to shoot perimeter shots. Is mediocre in defense, and is woefully awful in inside offense that he has a 25 percent conversion rate on open, unguarded layups.

#11 - SF - Estebe Eguiralde Chazarra, 19, Male, native of Vallezul - 1.72 m, 75.4 kg
Has good defensive capabilities and is can be relied upon on clutch situations... offensively. He usually starts the game very cold on offense but can swat shots in a fly. But on the closing moments of the game, he cannot defend players but can catch a hot streak offensively.

#12 - SG - Cergio Arebalo Malagon, 20, Male, native of Mandrid - 1.69 m, 68.5 kg
Is the only player in the roster that has little to no weakness for his position. He is a deadeye spot shooter and can shoot anywhere in the perimeter area. Is speedy enough to do occasional slashes. His little weakness is that he is much an injury prone player and can miss from minutes to half a season/tournament, even worse, an entire season.

#13 - PF/SF - Peni Villafranca Balcazar, 19, Female, native of Mandrid - 1.82 m, 82.5 kg
Is the only "player" in the team. Is actually a team manager but due to the struggle of Walter Laganson to find players, she was slotted as the reserve/water girl of the team. Can only do layups and has a 45 percent conversion rate on it. Usually is off position in defense, so much that she can actually cause injuries to the rest of the team. She was also drafted in due to her looks and her height.

#14 - SG/PG - Primo Crespo Redondo, 20, Male, native of Mandrid - 1.68 m, 72.9 kg
Can provide "passable" defense and offense, and is usually a jack of trades player, master of none. Even in free throws, he shoots around 46 percent from the line. Go-to-guy for other teams to commit a shooting foul, or any foul.

#15 - C/PF - Manolo Murga Maya, 19, Male, native of Cebuenas - 1.99 m, 102.3 kg
Was formerly playing football as a defender, but switched to basketball due to excessive intentional handballs causing his local team to disown him. His natives would be surprised why he was included in the team as when he switched to basketball, he committed a lot of kick ball violations instead, disowning him further from the local team. In his best can provide excellent defense, at worst can commit multiple kick ball violations and ejections due to kicking players also.

Playing Style

The Lions are playing a small ball lineup this time around, with no player in the starting lineup and only one player on the entire team taller than 6'9. They want to spread the floor and force opponents to switch on defense to either create bad matchups for driving past taller, slower players, or shooting 3s over smaller defenders. They run whenever possible, and try to use their superior pace and stamina to wear out opposing defenses. They can drive, but their true strength is outside shooting. On defense, it starts with a 1-2-1-1 3/4 to full-court zone press that attempts to wear down opposing offenses, force them to burn the shot clock before setting up their offense, and to create turnovers. If the press fails, they typically fall back into a 2-3 matchup zone as the basic defense. However, the defense typically changes several times during the game, with the Lions showing a 3-2 against better shooting teams, a 1-3-1 if they want to trap and cause havoc, a triangle-and-two with Klein and Colbert glued to the two best players, a box-and-one with Matty Stewart in the terrier role chasing all over the court, or even a man-to-man if the situation calls for it. They also substitute frequently to maintain the pace of play and adapt their defense to the personnel they have and the opponents' personnel. It's a smart and athletic team, if not a particularly big one.
