Yet again there was no consultation about it, and yet again, you could have actually announced this rather than just slipping it in under the radar. Just saying.

Yeah we're in again.

I Manifest
Saviera for the Worldvision Song Contest

Hello Everyone,

We Have an Impotent Announcement to Make.

It Has Been Exactly 60 Editions Since We Adopted Title Case Spelling. Just Like We Changed Our Formatting Recently, We are Laying Rest to This Tradition That Has Become a Key Characteristic of Saviera. Effective Now. It may be sad, but we are getting with the times, and you should too.

Anyway, in addition to an impotent announcement, we also have an important announcement to make. Saviera confirms that we are running for the Worldvision Song Contest this time. We are committed to make an impact with our existence in the contest.

We understand that we are not perfect. Last edition, we wanted to participate, but because our boy Tom F. O. O'Leary did so good at Worldvision, we were unsure how to follow up with that. A lot of acts that were interested in taking part, pulled out because they didn't think they could one-up that.

But now, we are back, strong than ever, and we want to give back to our community. Because of that, we are looking to work together with members of the community to make a difference. That difference is a Worldvision entry like you have never before seen from Saviera. The song will be called I Manifest and will be perform to a particular tune taken from someone else's national final, with their permission of course. The singer is to be announced.

Thank you for listening to what Saviera wants to do for the Worldvision Song Contest. Please vote for us!

Postby Nekoni » Wed Oct 21, 2020 3:26 am

After spending a lot of time metaphorically in the desert, I feel that it's time that I stuck my oar in here again. As someone who has been in the system sporadically since 2013, and full time since 2017, I'd like to think I'm an experienced user around here, and I think I have the chops to be in the committee. As you've seen, in addition to hosting two contests by myself, I've also shown that I can work with others to deliver a contest, as shown with the recent pairing up with Malta Comino Gozo. As I said along the way of the last few weeks for the contest, I wanted to help out Malta and utilise my talents to create a strong contest without making it appear like I was dominating control from him. I feel like I've achieved that goal, and I believe that Malta can attest to this, too.

Well, now I've had a taste of the work behind the scenes, and I've seen for myself how the sausage is made in the post-televote Contest, I've decided that I think I'd like to experience a bigger taste of it for myself. Whilst I'm not offering some kind of big evolution of how things are run, I don't think that's what the community would want. The order of the day here, is that with Nekoni, you have a strong pair of hands to run things as smooth and as competent as the contest can be ran.

Here's what I'm bringing to the table:

- Without naming names and sticking my fingers in hornets nests they don't belong, I think there is an underlying issue that there needs to be more communication between the committee and the community. There's been a few times where an important piece of information has been lost under the radar, whether it wasn't on the Discord/forum or it was pinned underneath a bigger, more important bit, there's something that can be done about making sure that everything the committee wants to publish is displayed in both the forum, the Discord, and highlighted in a way that the message can't be ignored. Nobody wants to be blamed for not finding a needle in a giant haystack, and I believe I can help make sure this doesn't happen.
- It's no surprise that I was not particularly a fan of the new televote system, when it was initially launched alongside WV82. However, I have listened to the feedback of those who approved of it, and now we seem to have shaken the cobwebs off it, I feel like I understand how it works now, and I'm willing to work with it. As you can see, I'm willing to change my mind about things given the evidence, I'm willing to test new ideas and theories out, and above all, I'm willing to admit when I'm wrong.
- As you've seen recently, I have a strong work ethic when it comes to both behind-the-scenes data work and graphical work. I have been described (by my irl boss, in fact!) as 'the world's greatest hammer': I have a job, and I just get on and do it. My work through WorldVision 85 was all completed in a relatively very short space of time thanks to me using a skilled programming approach to it, and I'd like to extend my hand as part of the Committee to any future host that may need to use it, for either time constraints or any desire for my graphic aesthetic. I'm not doing this to push Nekoni, the brand: I wish to offer my services under the Committee banner solely out of my desire for the contest to look and run as well as it can be. My services would not be forced on anybody, but they will always be there should anybody ask for them.
- Every Friday I bring cake.

I hope you take those points to heart, and consider voting for Nekoni as a WorldVision Committee member. Thank you for your time.

I wasn't going to stand again after WorldVision 81. I really wasn't.

But the last five editions have been nasty, divisive, and disunifying, and some of the worst editions I have ever taken part in. And I have taken part in every single one going back to WorldVision 29.

In the last five editions alone:

- The televote doesn't work. The last edition was even calculated incorrectly.
- The committee don't listen, and concerns are dismissed out of hand.
- The forum continues to be neglected in favour of Discord.
- The committee have waged war on joke puppets, removing much of the fun of the contest.

People have been alienated, and are too scared to raise concerns given the attitudes of some. These are messages I've received from former and current participants within the last five editions:

WV/WHF is mostly regarded in not so pleasant light by NSSport community bc. of the level of hostility generated there [...] [redacted] being targeted won't help improving reputation on that

(in response to a Discord discussion)
[committee member] sounded rude [...] [redacted] really got shafted around by the community
I feel the idea [the televote] is cool [...] but in actuality it's always kinda complicated and riddles with issues
this whole system is fundamentally flawed due to discord [..] WV committee affects me as a non-WV player as well, due to discord moderation
consultations should be made on both so that everyone has a chance to comment // for example, people started to recognise that on NS Sports that things would be discussed on discord and not on forum, which is why now we cross-post discussions onto the forums because there's a segment of the community who doesn't use discord
What has WV become? [...] that's definitely this discord bubble that's really revealed itself here, and it just makes those not active feel unwelcome now :/ [...] It's more about the primacy of discord over forums I guess [...] [redacted] was first dismissed, and then blamed for not being always active [...] on the WV discord
This is the first time I've actually seen people not disagree with you [Mister X] though, just because its you (I feel like that's happening a lot as well [...] you make a point its dismissed)
you'd think that someone throwing shit like that would have evidence to back it up
I get that you can be quite stubborn and everything but that's still kind of dickish [from a committee member]

So in this election, don't let anyone tell you that WorldVision is fine and we need more of the same.

I have a three-point plan that will go some way to fixing these problems:

1. The Televote

The televote has been a constant source of problems and irritation. At the very least, it should be a host option, if not abolished altogether. The problems are endless, but include:

- Entirely being shrouded in secrecy and changing factorings on the fly is opaque at best and a power grab at worst, as well as no accountability if it is calculated incorrectly - they don't even let the host do it.
- When we vote we don't actually know how many points actually are we giving out after it all filters down. This means those who thought the contest had a higher standard get more of a say.
- Redistribution of DSQed pts does not happen in jury voting, but does in televote, which is worst of all worlds.
- Technically, can vote for yourself by marking everyone else minus pts (eg you give yourself 0, Kish -1, Mrx -3, Tod -6, Ele -3, etc). This wouldn't be a problem if votes 3/10 and below weren't minus numbers.
- Over-policing of televotes can be considered a conspiracy by the committee to ensure everyone votes with the hive mind. This, however, appears to be only applied selectively to non-committee members and I have seen two users in particular singled out on multiple occasions.
- The trial was deemed an unqualified success, even though it really, really, wasn't, and the televotes for WorldVision 82 have never been released publicly, making record-keeping impossible.
- The televote is designed to reward middle-placing entries (from the horse's mouth) and punishes divisive ones with high standard jury deviations.

The only advantage it has is the "two-phases" system, which could be delivered in a different way using the "old" system, similar to how it was used when I participated as a one-off in WHF. Post the 1-7s in the thread as normal, but the 8s/10s/12s submitted through telegram and announced by the host. This proposal I made was dismissed out of hand without even being voted on.

Let me just clarify one thing: I would never abolish it without the support of the community, but it must be on the table.

2. Openness and Transparency

Do we ever know things were happening before they were slipped in under the radar, or "announced" on Discord, a server with thousands of messages per day and often things go unpinned and lost forever in the endless spam? Who decided we needed a televote? It was shoved through by a committee member, trialled with a consultation period of less than 72 hours, and then declared successful enough to be put to referendum, designed to appeal to the Discord bubble that has been evident and has been mentioned in several OOC threads by several people, but dismissed out of hand by the committee.

Let's take the disqualification of the Missus Xian televote in WorldVision 85. This was kept under wraps and secretive by the committee. To this day, they have never posted on the forum about it for something of such a large magnitude. It shouldn't be on me to "leak" something that the public needed to know when it was a) under investigation; or b) came to a conclusion.

This leads into the third point:

3. Use the Forum More

Is this a contest held on NationStates or Discord? The former.
Is every single person in WorldVision on Discord? No.
Where are most announcements made? Discord.

The criticism of this goes back many, many editions. It has been raised in the past when implementing the regular special editions - the first time it was even mentioned on the forum was after the decision had been taken to have a vote. This is a point raised by Ethane in the WV82 OOC thread and the response, quite literally, was that the committee wanted to only ask Discord.

Not only does this favour users who are active on Discord 24/7 (and therefore disadvantages users like Ethane and Main Nation Ministry who are not), but also punishes newer users, who have the unenviable task of attempting to step into a brand-new community that is cliquey as hell, and if you say anything contentious it will be spammed into oblivion so that it disappears up the channel so much so that within an hour it's thousands of messages gone. One huge advantage of the forums? It's policed by impartial moderators, not by the WorldVision committee. The mods have specifically said they have no power over what occurs on Discord, and that means people have got away with the most flagrant of forum violations that would have them banned in a heartbeat. By returning to the forum, not only would constantly bumping it up the NationStates subforum lead, hopefully, to new users participating, which is always good, but it would remove much of the nastiness.

What am I proposing to do, practically? For a start, any and all committee announcements would be made on the forum, with a Discord message extending solely to "an announcement has been made, please read it here: [link]". Any other measures to mitigate the impact of Discord would need a supermajority of users to agree so this is not the place for the ideas carousel right now, but suggestions could include splitting WV and WHF up into two Discord servers (thus directly addressing the concerns of one person who messaged me), and possibly slow mode of 10-20 seconds to go some way to addressing the spam problem. But those are ideas for another time.

Any questions on anything, feel free to ask in this thread, or a TG, or a DM.

WorldVision is broken.

Vote for change.

Vote Mister X.

The period between the 80th and 85th contests have been turbulent times.

With disputes about televotes, the powers of the WVC, conduct, and even the resignation of member, we have experienced one of the most contentious periods in WorldVision history.

Perhaps we need someone neutral. Someone fresh. Someone who hasn't served before.

This is where I come in.

If elected, I shall:

1. Establish alternates. - In the case of a resignation from the WorldVision Committee, alternates shall be established. In order, they would be the:

Overseer of the WHF (at the time of this post, Britonisea)
Server Owner (Kalosia)
Anyone who ran for committee but lost (TBA)

2. Further democracy. - If there are major issues that occur (for instance, the televote), it should be brought to the attention of the public to vote on. Everyone would be able to speak for a certain amount of time, and then after that, we would vote on it. Whichever opinion gains a pluralty, wins.

3. Make the Committee more transparent. - The moderation channels should be opened up so that while everyone (or at least, everyone outside of the moderation that can be trusted) can read it, they can't post in it.

Amid security concerns (i.e., voting & the WorldVision password), the password should be changed every Committee election & ONLY shared in DMs with fellow committee members. Violation of that should result in the password being changed immediately & whoever sending the password being barred from committee activity for a temporary length of time. Voting results can be taken to an off-server group chat.

4. Establish a consensus on the televote once and for all. This ties in with number 2, but instead should be decided on by the Committee themselves, along with other vocal parties (i.e. Mister X) in order to reach a compromise on the issue until the end of the elections. My personal opinion is that we should keep it, as the ESC does the same thing as well.

Oh boy, looks like I'm doing a lot this edition. A host bid, a national final of entries, commentary, and now this? What have I gotten myself into? Well..... let's see.....

PREFACE: IN ALL SERIOUSNESS, before I begin this bid for voting I'd like to express with the utmost sincerity that this is not a joke entry. In a time where WorldVision's leadership is being polarized and there are various circles forming and arguments every other edition, I believe a humble and fun bid for a leadership position that most accurately reflects my character without any flashy rhetoric or finger-pointing accusations is necessary for this community's integrity and my chances as a prospective committee member.

Here are my policies at a glance:

POLICY PREAMBLE: I am Caryton, known as Cary informally and as the Spiritual Republic of Caryton in full. I am one of the community's youngest members at a mere 17 years of age, and I've competed in WorldVision since around WV74. I will be honest with you, I don't score well at all for a variety of in-character reasons but I don't see why the others feel it necessary to include their previous feats and achievements as if winning makes them any more qualified or valuable than a new nation. If you couldn't tell by the silly graphics, the use of Comic Sans, and the straight-to-the-point nature which will soon greet you through my policies, I take this in a casual and fun matter. WV should not be factionalized, but it is-- even when it's not election season.

I'm going to be honest with you all again. I have absolutely no formal leadership experience within NationStates. I have no idea how this leadership structure works, and I have little spare time. I see my decision to run for committee as an immediate obligation to preserve the friendships here and help bond everybody again. I am a relatively new member, but at least I must have balls of titanium to be stepping out into this minefield, right? I'm gonna keep it real, and I'm going to keep it friendly. My somewhat small presence within the community means the bias which has followed some members around for months if not years on end has not fallen on my ears. I am unaware of your drama, and I do not care about your drama. I swear that I will be impartial to each and every situation, and will play devils advocate if the WVC seems too unanimous on a controversial subject. Even if my defense gets obliterated by facts and logic, at least certain members can feel at ease that they've been represented fairly and actually considered during a decision.

If I am elected, in simple terms, everyone has a clean slate with me and balance will be restored. A new and fresh set of ideas are needed in the WVC, so please consider me for your votes!

1. Debuting Nations Should Get Host Rights: I see no reason why debuting nations can not host. I feel like it's our job to encourage new members to be creative, to go all out and to make their presence known. If elected, I will continuously push for the ability of new nations to make and submit host bids.

2. The Televote Is Fine: As some of you recall, I was hesitant on the televote when it was first introduced. I thought it would be complicated and would discourage time-pressed people from actually voting altogether. My opinion has reversed completely. I like the televote, it allows for more proportional votes. Giving only 10 point values to 10 nations is harsh, but with the televote it's easier to like a nations song, even if it's late in the edition and there are no points left over-- you can still give them some form of merit. My only stipulation with the televote is that there should be help readily available to hosts and participants so nobody-- especially newbies-- are in the dark.

3. "New Day New Dawn" Policy on Fights: As I stated before, I don't know jack crap about the drama of the inner echelons. As far as records go upon my election, each and every member will have a clean slate with me. There is a compromise to everything, and if I have a say about it, we are NOT going to crap talk a person just because they're bold enough to say what they feel-- even if it is misinformed, wrong, or whatever else. Controversies are done, and I will be a thorn in this community's side until both parties in both membership and leadership can be quiet about it and shake hands. Also, we need a strike system for the Discord chat to better reinforce this policy.

4. Discord Should Remain The Main: There's no argument about it, the Discord is by far the most active communication network for the WV Community. I personally disagree with the "return to forums" mindset because any attempt to hinder the Discord's function will only clog the OOC thread and damage our activity severely. It's easier for the few holdouts there are to just clam up and make a discord account, because we would be sacrificing too much for a network that isn't instant and without the ease of bots. I also disagree with the concept of a separate WHF discord and the 'Alternative' discord that's occasionally passed around by our older members. One for the sake of practicality, the other for the sake of morality. One strong, active, and centralized communication site please. We also need a publicly accessible bulletin where important information can be posted by everyone.

5. No Double-Standards: This is simple to say and should not be elaborated on. Everyone is under equal obligation to the rules.

6. A Facsimile Of A Status Quo: I don't like the proposals to radically change the community, but I also recognize the grim truth that we can't go on like this. So, why don't we reach a compromise and make minor changes but keep going like we always do?

7. Revisiting the Strike System and Disqualification Minimums: I don't believe in incomplete or empty entries resulting in disqualification, or at least so instantly. To be disqualified should be a severe punishment, not a default. If the other candidates disagree with me on this, at least implement a procedure to allow the member in question to provide an "allibi".

Thank you for your time and consideration, and I hope to see the new members of the next WVC.

Against My Better Judgement, I'm Running For WV Committee

Postby Elejamie » Thu Oct 22, 2020 9:31 am

Hello. I'm Elejamie, aka Ele, EJM, Placely Placington (or Placey as it's sometimes misspelt, which I genuinely don't mind even if ICly they do), that asshole who won't shut up about the Screwjob, that asshole who called the WorldVision "broken" a couple of editions ago or just "that asshole" in general. OK, definitely not those last ones. And, against my better judgement, I'm running for WV Committee. Normally, I'm actually quite content with a lot of things and would normally not run for any position of power on this site under my own choosing; in fact, I was pretty much nominated into becoming WCoH VP (the less said about that the better) and NSRB Sevens VP (which is going smoother) but after mulling it over I've decided that I might as well join in.

So what will I bring to the table?

Not much really. Yes, normally everyone running would give out some valid explanations for why they should vote for them. And trust me, everyone else that has nominated themselves have some interesting policies and platforms you should consider. But for me? I don't really have a lot new I would introduce. Don't get me wrong, I did have a few ideas swimming around in my head and I'm probably not going to rule out actually introducing them but you can see why I probably won't, other than being incredibly unpopular. To save myself from being flooded with requests or maybe if you want to see if they could be something you'd agree with, they are:

  • One edition moratorium for each song. Simply put, if a song is used in a contest then it'll be banned for one edition. For example, our WV85 winning tune (Säg att du är min by Arvingarna) cannot be used for a WV86 entry if we use this plan but it could be used again from WV87 onwards. And that would include covers and remixes even though they're technically new songs. If it's been used at the latest WHF then it can theoretically be used here, because that's its own thing. That way, we can keep things fresh and have a bit of variety going in the contest. However, as we now have a huge group of regulars and better communication between each other, gone are the days of everyone using Rhythm Inside every goddamn contest, including twice in the same one. Yes, really.
  • A one-contest ban if you win three times in a row. Pretty much what it says on the tin. Using the same logic as everyone's favourite board game Monopoly, where if you roll three doubles you don't get to move again you go to jail, if you win three times in a row you'll be forced to sit out a contest. That way, there'll be a bit more equality in the contest, especially since I came up with this idea at a time when I felt the competition was being a bit biased in favour of the bigger nations. However as the likelihood of winning three times in a row is extremely unlikely (a fair amount of back-to-back winners but no threepeaters), coupled with the fact that some people might end up getting a bit tactical with this if it did pass, and you could see why I'm hesitant to actually introduce this.
There are more but I can't really remember them at the moment; expect me to edit them in when I finally dig them out.

So what will I actually do? After all, I'm not exactly running to boost what little ego I have. There are things that I will actually do in the event I somehow get elected. These include but aren't limited to:

  • Regular OP updates. This means adding countries to the sign-up sheet and even their entries, adding and updating national finals and even their results, adding host bids, so on and so forth. Basically, if it's information that should be stuck in the opening post, it'll be added to the opening post.
  • Regular communication between forums and Discord. If I somehow end up on the Committee and we come up with an idea, I'll get up a post that essentially says "Here's what we've discussed on the Discord, what do you guys think?". Pure and simple. After all, this IS a forum-based competition and not everyone's able to get on Discord or even wants to use it, so it's unfair that they can't get a proper say in things. And there's no need to be secretive unless it's to work out the kinks before announcing any plans.
  • Trying to keep the peace. I'm lawful neutral, I generally don't care about what arguments everyone has. Sure I've had complaints of my own and people I've argued with even over petty stuff but, just as long as we all work together, then I'll try and put my opinions aside for a bit and concentrate on helping make a fun contest for everyone. So if something does pop up and everyone does start having a go at each other instead of calmly talking it out, then I'll see if I'm able to come in and calm everything down. EVERYONE IS EQUAL to me, so even if I'm friendly with you or you're one of the big names, if you mess up and cause a massive slanging match then expect me to put my foot down and put a stop to things.
  • Regular posts and reminders. I usually have nothing to do when reminders for deadlines are posted, when announcements are made or even when the sign-up thread for the next contest is up. So I have no real problem just posting all of that, as I'm probably just waiting on standby when that happens. I'm also going to use this space to let everyone know that I'll also privately remind people about any issues with their entry or votes (such as giving 19+ points to a single nation, if they've voted "me" for a nation that isn't theirs in the televote, if they've simply not posted actual lyrics to the song and instead just posted a link to their factbook, etc.) just so they can try and fix it as soon as possible before any further issues arise.
  • Hold a referendum on the televote if there's enough demand. This is an incredibly minor thing that I'll probably end up not doing which is why it's at the bottom of this list. Anyway, I was sceptical of the televote at first and wanted it to be an optional but now I don't really mind it. Sure it was pretty much forced out of the door mid-contest for its trial run, we held a vote on it without any forum-side discussion and it still doesn't really add much to the contest other than more suspense and more points for people, but I'm actually OK with it remaining a thing. That being said, if there's enough demand to actually hold a vote on whether or not we should keep it (or even have it as an optional thing which is what I originally wanted), then I'm OK with doing that and I'll just be as OK if it continues to remain a part of the contest.

In the unlikely event that I make it onto the Committee and decide to run again, I'll probably quote this post and post it in the correct thread. Saves time and effort when making a new campaign anyway, especially since I didn't have a lot to offer this go around and I probably won't next time.

So yes, not much else to say. If you've got any questions, then feel free to ask them and I'll try and answer them to the best of my ability. I don't know what else to say or how else to try and get people to consider voting for this angry, opinionated hipster so I'm going to end my thing here. Best of luck to everyone else taking part then. Thanks for reading and, well, bye.

Bid for Committee

Postby Scotatrova » Thu Oct 22, 2020 2:26 pm

Hey everyone. Now you may notice I don’t have a fancy graphic like almost everyone else does, and that’s because I decided not to make one. Most of it being laziness, but mostly because I don’t need graphical designs, gifs, and fancy fonts to get my points across. As we are all aware, the time that has passed since the last election have been, wild to say the least. Constant arguing and an overall hostile environment at times. But I’m going to get my points across and hope that they appeal to you. Thus, I hereby establish this manifesto for my bid for the WorldVision Committee.

1. "Fresh" Blood – Now some of you may know that I haven’t been here too long, and for those of you that don’t, I debuted in WorldVision 72 about a year and a half ago. I would say that likely qualifies me as being a relatively recent addition to this contest that will have run for 86 editions as of our current one. With that in mind, I think it would benefit the community to have someone on the committee that hasn’t already served as opposed to the individuals that have been staples of the committee for years at this point. Not that that’s disregarding the things that previous committes have given us, but it would be nice to have a fresher perspective on things when related to the committee.

2. Keep the Televote – One of the main talking points of this election term is definitely the televote. In my case, I advocate that it stays. It adds something new and different to the contest that we didn’t have before. There’s going to be argument that its more of a burden than its worth, but I disagree. With the conclusion of the Jury vote, people have a chance to look forward to what lays in store with the televote. It also gives everyone a good chance of bumping up their position, however this isn’t always certain. Someone who sinks in the jury could have their comeback with the televote results. I feel this is a good reason for it to stick around, as it adds more suspense and speculation about the end result instead of just calculating everyone’s jury votes and finding the winner out that way. I’ve noticed that someone else running for the committee has proposed abolishing it outright, if not making it a host choice. While I can see his reasoning in the second option, I vehemently disagree with the first. The televote was established through a referendum, and not just pure committee approval, meaning people had voted to establish it. Right out abolishing it disregards the people who voted for it in the first place, and that goes against the recent claims that the committee already doesn’t listen to the communities opinions.

3. Keep the OOC Updated – A common thing that I have noticed is how sporadic OOC updates are. While I don’t agree with the notion that the forums are neglected in favor of Discord, this is one thing that can easily be addressed. If elected, I will take up the task of updating the OOC in a timely manner when needed. That way it is easier to keep track of participants, any puppet nations, including a proper link to the IC and any potential host bids. This ensures that any newcomers can find the information they need and have it readily available.

4. Experience – Some of you might be asking “well if you’re new to the community, what experience would you have in being on the committee?” Well, I was the WA Delegate in my region for almost 6 years. That might not seem like a big accomplishment, but through it I learned how to maneuver myself to work with others in a rather large regional bureacracy. Therefore, I see this as an asset when working together with fellow committee members if elected.

5. Ensure Peace and Fun - The most important thing of all is that we all can fun while we participate. That is the whole point of this contest besides the competition aspect of it. To have fun and enjoy ourselves while we listen to other's entries and work to improve our own. That would be great if everyone could be cordial with one another, even during times where that isn't seen too much of. We need more of that, so that this community can continue to be a place where we come together for our love of one clear thing, music.

There we have it folks. That’s my manifesto. Thank you for taking the time to read through it, whether you agree or disagree with them. I look forward to seeing the results, and good luck to everyone else running.
