To remain a child forever?

Postby Sanghyeok » Tue Oct 20, 2020 6:57 pm

Please consider the below scenario:

Imagine one day you are walking along on your way home, as an ordinary underpaid and overworked 25 year old with no career prospects, when you see a poor grey coloured cat with red eyes being chased by a pack of dogs. You save the poor cat from the dogs, and to your surprise it starts speaking.

"Thank you for saving me!" it says, and you gasp. Then, it tells you something else: "I used to be able to grant wishes using magical powers. However, now I can only make one of them happen: the wish to remain a child forever."

Curious, you ask the cat (whose name is Nozomi, by the way) what this means.

"Well, every time you become 18, your life will be reset, and you go back to the day you were born! You will have no memories of that time, and be able to live endless childhoods. How does it sound?"

You consider for a moment, and Nozomi creates two magic wands with his powers.

"The pink wand will allow you to enter that cycle, while the azur wand will let you remain a normal human with a normal life."

You reach out, ready to take one of them into your hands. But which one will you choose?

I choose the pink wand. I don't miss my childhood too much, but I don't want to lose my innocence and naivety.

That's a fair argument.

Azur.

Resetting every time you hit 18, with loss of memory, is equivalent to dying. If I'm gonna die, I'd rather die after a complete adult life.

I don't want to be a child forever. They have a lot of problems and those problems are never taken seriously. Being totally dependent on other people isn't great either.

Besides, I still hope that people will stop calling me cute someday. :p

Maybe Remain 21 forever would be a better deal

Sanghyeok, you've been spending far too much time around Blue Germany. It's not good for your health.

I’ll pass having the option to go back to 18 would be better.

Nah, I like my prefrontal cortex fully developed and the privilege and independence of adulthood. I wouldn't mind being 25 forever though.

Erasing/restarting a conscious entity's memory/skills/development is equivalent to destroying and creating a new one. Also, I don't want to risk getting a bad childhood.

No, thanks. Not that's it an issue for me but I would say, "Yeah, okay, but I want to reset from 40 and have memories."

Nah.

Childhood is really only great because it's fleeting. I feel like nobody really appreciates being a child at the time, and unless that pill also restores one's innocence there's not really much point to being a child again.

Without innocence, being a child just means you're more vulnerable in a cruel and heartless world.

A strategic choice. But, alternatively, I could do whatever Umbridge did in Harry Potter.
