Format
There will be 22 teams in the tournament, with 12 automatically advancing past the group stage. The Casaran format will be used for the first stage. For the first MD, teams will be split into 2 pots of 11, and will be randomized on a list. Then, the team that is first on the Pot 1 list will play the team that is first on the pot 2 list, and so on.

Official squad for the 35th World Lacrosse Championships

Information
The Squidroidian Lacrosse Association, or the SLA, is a sports governing body in Squidroidia once ran by the Squidroidian Armed Forces, and by extension the Squidroidian government, but in the offtime between the 34th and 35th WLCs has been turned over to the Squidroidian Lacrosse Premier League, a 16 team professional lacrosse league playing in Squidroidia. Since the transition from government institution to private company, the SLPL Finals are now held at Tower Stadium, often called by locals and international audiences as Tower Park, the home to the Real Squidroid association football team.

Since nearly making the knockout stages in Jeckland 2 years ago, the Squidroidia Splatoon, the 21 members of the national team that suited up to fight for their country in a once far off Esportivan land, have slotted into their lives as members of the 16 lacrosse teams that play in Squidroidia's highest tier of pro lacrosse. Since then, however, retirements were made to the squad. Hiroto Kanda retired after the first Squidroidian Lacrosse Premier League season ended, and was joined by Haruki Iwata and Tarō Okumura. And with Rokuro "Rokit" Minami on the brink of retirement at 33 years of age, Squidroidian lacrosse may become one where the young guns, and especially the young Inklings, could dominate in. Minoru Uehara, who very nearly guided his team to a last 16 appearance only to lose on the final day of the group stage to West Phoencia, will return to fill in the voids the team has had.

Their first opponents? The defending world champions of lacrosse. HUElavia.

Manager Jordan Helms, 47
Helms was a compromise choice as Stars manager after the Incorporated Lacrosse Federation couldn't come to terms with any of their prospective choices. Helms agreed to retain former manager Carter Whitlock's coaching staff and roster, saying he wanted to give the team a chance to become "[his] guys."

Defensive Coordinator: Bill Harbour (37 years old)
Harbour’s defence was critical for the Stars in their last WLC final, when they defeated Delaclava 14-8 in Licentiapacisterra nearly five years ago. He signed on as an assistant coach after his playing career came to an end.
Offensive Coordinator: Tyler Pawlenty (51 years old)
Pawlenty helped mold offenses in college, in particular Rypien State College during a four-year period when that school won three collegiate national titles. His teams emphasise possession and patience, often including multiple passes before taking the perfect shot.
Assistant Coach: George Tomlin (35 years old)
Tomlin recently retired as a faceoff specialist after a collegiate career that saw him win 78 percent of his faceoffs. During his professional career in Sarzonia, he won 69 percent of his faceoffs. He can coach multiple styles of faceoffs, taking into account multiple fogos.
Assistant Coach: Bradley Morse (55 years old)
Serves as goalie coach. He helped several Sarzonian World Lacrosse Championship winning teams with goalies in an informal capacity. Now, he's coming out of retirement to provide assistance as a paid full-time coach after Whitlock convinced him to do so.

The goalie unit for the team is a very versatile one, being able to play anyone of them at any time in the game. Roy is a the main starter, as he has been since WLC 29. Kevin however, has been receiving increasing playing time from coach Tyrone, as he starts to exceed the skill of Roy. Dennis on the other hand, is a new, athletic goalie, who hails from a small town in eastern Kalactin.

Hi! I am excited to write my first ever article for the Concord Heights Times! There is so much going on in the world of sports right now, and many of our key writers are still in Drawkland as the team finishes up World Cup 86. It is so exciting that they are in the semifinals. Then, we will have the World Bowl starting soon, then you have Junior hockey. Plus, now they are taking signups for the Copa Rushmori and I have heard that even World Baseball Classic signups will begin soon. There will also, invariably, be junior soccer competitions beginning their own sign up period. Wait, I even forgot about the International Basketball Championships, which feel like they have been in the sign up phase forever. Now, with all of that, there is also the World Lacrosse Championships.

Lacrosse is, of course, a very popular sport here in Cassadaigua, so there is an interest in this competition but most of the other ones have more prestige. So, when I am looking for the groups and all that jazz, I am told of this format. Why, oh, why, does this format exist? Casaran. Why? Please make it go away. Judith Moreland, a spokesperson for the Cassadagan Lacrosse Commission said that, "We voted for the bid simply because there were no other bids, and we didn't see any new bids in the horizon. We do not like this format. We like the host nation, by all means this is not a statement about Northwest Kalactin. We're hoping that once they can finally do a competition like this that they will be satisfied with it, and we will never have them propose it ever again!" 34-year old megastar Jessica Crockett called the format, "Stupid. But everyone is in the same boat with it, so it will not be an excuse."

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL LACROSSE TEAM

This will be Abanhfleft's twelfth time participating in the World Lacrosse Championship? Time sure does fly fast. For reasons that can be simply summed up as "it's the best thing we've done in a while," the Democratic Republic sent forth their women's national lacrosse team for their first seven appearances in the competition. The women's team, led by the "Fearsome Threesome" of Menan Alrisheb, Fatima Alsambis, and Cecilia Cuvimi, managed to win third place in their first ever tournament WLC XIX, beating the Serbian Empire to nab the bronze from under the veteran nation's noses. They went on to win back-to-back titles in WLC 22 and WLC 23 before a miserable performance in WLC 24 saw them eliminated in the group stage, but they have come back to win it all once again in WLC 25 to set history as the first nation to win three titles in four attempts. It was then decided that it was time to switch things up, and so for the first time in WLC history, Abanhfleft sent forth a mixed team of men and women to play international lacrosse in WLC 30. And they came close, but were still unable to snag the ultimate prize, losing to the eventual winners Wrexwic in the final. Eventually, finally, Abanhfleft did pick up another title on home soil in WLC 32; unfortunately they were unable to defend it in WLC 33, and were only able to collect the bronze in Jeckland. Time to bring home the big one once again in WLC 35!

The history of lacrosse in Abanhfleft is both long and short, in that it has been in the country for a long time, but a concise summary of said history can be written down in just ten to fifteen sentences or maybe more. Lacross was introduced in Abanhfleft by vacationing Canadian college students and expatriates who missed playing the game. The first truly Fleftic lacrosse players came from association football and field hockey backgrounds, and these players played in seasonal lacrosse clubs to augment their salaries during their respective sports' offseasons. The first national lacrosse league in Abanhfleft was established in 1929, and was composed of 7 teams coming from the Capital Islands. The Fleftic national lacrosse league system adopted its current franchise format in 2001, with the National League (now called the Lacrosse League of Abanhfleft) separating itself from the pyramid and becoming an independent organization of its own right. The Fleftic Lacrosse Federation (Samahang Lakros ng Abanhfleft or SLA) was established in 1930 to manage the leagues, and to see to the creation of a national team. The Abanhfleft men's national lacrosse team played its first game in 1931, where they lost 1-0 to a team of Montreal college players.

1963 saw the first attempts to introduce women's lacrosse into Abanhfleft. Women's lacrosse had vastly different rules from men's lacrosse, and while these programs saw some success in the mid-sixties, Fleftic women decided that the rules of women's lacrosse were "too soft," and simply adopted the rules of men's lacrosse. When the women's national lacrosse team played its first games in 1969, they surprised many other teams with their extremely aggressive style of play, the likes of which were more usually seen in men's lacrosse games. This led to many incidents of broken legs, broken arms, broken ribs, broken jaws, and so on and so forth. Eventually, the SLA established another women's team, this one focusing on women's lacrosse rules. Teams playing Abanhfleft are well-advised to treat the women like men because the girls will certainly treat their opponents like Fleftic men.

They have won three World Lacrosse Championships, winning in WLC 22, 23, and 25. Starting in WLC 26, the team entered a rebuilding stage in which it maintained its ranking in the multiverse as much as possible without really challenging for the title. But in WLC 30, the SLA declared the rebuilding done, and the national team backed up this announcement with a deep playoff run that went all the way to the final, where they were unfortunately stopped by Wrexwic. Abanhfleft fell in the Round of 12 against hosts Baker Park in WLC 31, but the Amazons would come out on top of the lacrosse world once again after winning the championship on their home soil in WLC 32. Fortunes have been up and down in more recent times though; while the team crashed out of the quarterfinals in WLC 33, they were able to collect a third place finish in WLC 34. The team will want to see that bronze medal as a stepping stone to further success this WLC 35.

Style: Abanhfleft is an attacking team. The legacy of football and hockey players dabbling in lacrosse in its early days in Abanhfleft has resulted in a playing style that emphasizes getting the ball up front for chances to score. This, however, leaves the defense a bit thin, as at least two midfielders join the attackers in forays up to the goal, leaving behind only the defenders and the keeper. The midfield makes up for this by rushing back to their positions as soon as the opponents have acquired the ball.

[Squidroidia]

Have you ever wondered how the hell squids could play lacrosse? Or football? Or whatever the hell the Squidbreak are doing with collegiate gridiron? Me neither.

The Inkling population in Squidroidia is a minority. Everybody knows that. There are more humans than squids in the country, and even then the Inklings are descendants of wild squid animals who now number somewhere in the tens of thousands, a far cry from the millions that once inhabited their land. An athletic ability of an Inkling is also very different to that of a human being. For Inklings, their peak is still the same as humans, but as soon as they're 30, they take a sharp decline and are basically not "fresh" enough to play.

The word fresh in the Inkling vocabulary is sharply different to that of the human vocabulary. In human terms, something that is fresh is something that is perfectly crisp, as in an apple or beverage, just right enough to consume. For the squids watching at home, the word is, of course, slang. Like human vocabulary, slang fresh can mean being "cool" and "hip", but in more general health terms, a fresh Inkling is an Inkling who is good enough to play sports or be athletic. As soon as a squid reaches 30, their freshness runs out, and as such they can't do what they used to do.

So what the hell does that mean for lacrosse? The WLC runs in 2 year cycles, much like the World Cup does here. If an Inkling joins the team at age 18, they can reasonably play for the national team for 6 cycles, so in this case WLCs 35 to 40. For a human, this can be extended to 7 cycles, some even 8 or 9. Inklings are also flexible creatures, and although while not able to turn into squids for obvious reasons (Nobody wants their team to be down to 9 while the goalie is busy shapeshifting during a counter-attack by the other team), they can move around much more effectively than humans. The Inkling can be a serious weapon at times.

So when studying the 3 squids on this year's Squidroidia squad for WLC 35 - Kovách, Gouveia and Di Napoli, think of this - They will retire before you feel like not kicking the ball anymore.

Jordan Helms looked out at the assembled media after the final walk through completed and he'd finished addressing his Sarzonian national lacrosse team.

There was a lot of talk about the enormous shoes he was having to fill despite not being well known even in Sarzonian lacrosse circles. He was replacing a man who might be considered Mr. Lacrosse in Sarzonia, the legendary midfielder and five-time World Lacrosse Champion Carter Whitlock as manager.

The talk was blunted somewhat as Helms managed the team to a victory in the Atlantian Oceania Lacrosse Classic, the de facto championship for the region. It wasn't the big, glittering trophy Sarzonian supporters were accustomed to winning, but it was a trophy that eluded Whitlock in the previous edition since it earned the name. The Stars also finished third in the predecessor tournament, the Moravican Lacrosse Invitational.

Helms knew better than to crow too much about an AOLC title. After all, the Champion Challengers Cup that the Stars won in the second of two editions of that tournament, what might essentially be considered the lacrosse equivalent of the Cup of Harmony, was hardly a prize that Sarzonians considered worthy of their attention, even if it was the only trophy Whitlock was able to win as manager. Helms knew how revered Whitlock was in Sarzonian lacrosse. Hell, he revered Whitlock. It was all he could to to keep from asking for an autograph or a selfie with Whitlock.

"We're going to have to deal with this format," Helms said of the Casaran system being employed by host nation Northwest Kalactin. He wondered out loud if former Incorporated Lacrosse Federation President and current World Lacrosse Championships President Jonathan Price could have spoken out against the format and forbade any hosts from even considering such a hated format in the future, but Price addressed it by saying that his official position was that the presidency didn't have the authority to impose specific formats.

"That would be an overreach," he recalled Price saying. "Look, we hate it as much as anyone else, but that's really not a position we want the presidency to take. It would set a dangerous precedent."

"Right now, our focus is on our match against Pripet Socialist Republic," Helms said. "We can only play the matches that are in front of us and let the chips fall where they may."

Kohnhead National Lacrosse Team

Info: Kohnhead will be sending a team to the World Lacrosse Championships for the second time in history, and expectations are a lot higher than last time. Lacrosse is safe to say not a very popular sport in Kohnhead. Gridiron, football, tennis, and volleyball are the main sports in Kohnhead. The team is actually made up of college all stars as college is where lacrosse is the most popular. Swisston City University are coming off of the college championships for lacrosse and they have the most members on the team, as well as the coach. Kohnhead went 4-2 in the Group Stage to reach the round of 16 in Jeckland last time before an overtime loss to the eventual champs so they are hoping to do better this time around.

Kohnhead go 1-2 in pre tournament friendlies

Kohnhead scheduled three friendlies before the tournament to get the players back ready for this year's WLC which will be done under the Casaran system. Two of the friendlies took place in Kohnhead while the third had us traveling to Sarzonia.

Kohnhead 15–16 Sylestone
Sylestone who are tied for 25th ranked in the World traveled to take on us as we are tied for 21st in the World so it was going to be a close match. The two sides met at the fields of Barnley University and despite us being up 10-6 at one point, Sylestone stormed back to win this one by one point. Will Lax scored the winner for Sylestone as Jarvis Washington couldn't stop it for us giving Sylestone the win. This one was a game both sides could have easily won so it's a bit disappointing to see them leave with the win but we played well.

Sarzonia 16–6 Kohnhead
What are you supposed to do against the 4th best team in the World in their own backyard? There was not much we could do in this one and while we struck first that was basically all we could muster against a very strong Sarzonia side. This isn't a bad result but I was really hoping we could be more competitive especially as we open the WLC against the 5th ranked Banjia.

Kohnhead 14–5 Northwest Kalactin
That's more like it as we routed the hosts of the WLC at Relton Park. Northwest Kalactin are not ranked very highly being tied for 39th in the Multiverse and this was one we really needed to win. Gavin Zamora really came to play in this one scoring four times and being a constant force all over in a 14-5 statement win. This was the final friendly so I'm hoping we can carry this momentum into the this year's WLC.

After the failures of the 28th and 29th World Lacrosse Championships, and especially the 29th edition where Banija got eliminated in the group stages of the WLCs for the first time ever, everything was torn down. The Olympic Committee of Banija seized control, and voted the sport's independent governing body(a rarity in Banija) out of existence. Various reforms were introduced. Chief among them- rid themselves of those who failed. The entire coaching staff was purged, and with it, not a single player who was on the WLC 28 or 29 roster was invited back to form the WLC 30 roster. Those high up in Banija called the WLC 29 group stage elimination, on home soil, of a nation that considered themselves an international lacrosse powerhouse an 'absolute embarassment to the country' and vowed for deep reforms to ensure that this did not ever happen again.

This, of course, happened before the 30th WLCs, in Cassadaigua. The Banijans were able to escape the group stage, once again, but fell to an ancient power in this sport- Sarzonia, by a score of 10-9, in the Round of 16. It was followed by a disappointing entry at the Champions Challengers Cup, where they fell to both Baker Park and Sarzonia in West Guiana, to finish 0-2. In the 31st WLCs, the Banijans finally overcame recent struggles by geting back to where they felt they belonged, the semifinals, though they fell at that stage in Baker Park. While they regressed at WLC 32, only going .500 in the group stage and getting knocked out in the Round of 16 by the tournament's top seed, they've restructured the squad. While they kept the defense and goalies, they made big changes up top, replacing all 7 midfielders on the roster, as well as changing out a number of attacking players. The WLC 33 cycle began strongly, with the team winning the Moravica Lacrosse Invitational en route to going 6-0 in group play. However, they were downed by Sarzonia in the quarterfinals, once again giving the Banijans an early exit from lacrosse's premier tournament.

WLC 34 was the most success this team has had in quite a while. While the team only got 2nd place in their group, their 4-2 finish put them into the knockout stages. They hit their stride in the knockout stages, beating a trio of lacrosse giants- West Phoenicia, then Sarzonia, and then the Commonwealth of Baker Park, en route to their first final since WLC 21. While they were favored in the Final, HUElavia was one better, downing the Banijans by a score of 14-9, as they came out of nowhere, in their first ever WLCs, and found themselves crowned champions of the world. Banija will look to get back to the Final in our 14th appearance in these championships, the five-time WLC medalists desperate as ever to take home the gold.

NORTHWEST KALACTIN- The center of the international lacrosse world right now is Northwest Kalactin. The hosts of the AO Lacrosse Classic, Atlantian Oceania's championship level lacrosse event, Banija's lacrosse team flew in there for a few days to try and determine who was the best lacrosse side in Atlantian Oceania. This tournament, of course, is a successor of the Olympic Committee's brainchild, the Moravica Lacrosse Invitational. Banijan rivals Sarzonia were crowned the lacrosse champions of Atlantian Oceania, defeating us in the semifinal, while we also lost to rivals Baker Park in the third place game.

The tournament was the debut of the new head coach, Allen Budaye. He had this to say about Banija's performance in Northwest Kalactin. "There were things that I liked, things I did not like. We played well, obviously, in the group stages. But there is no way around the facts, even with all due respect to Qasden and Delaclava. The two best teams we played dominated us, and that is concerning. We lost by 9 goals to Sarzonia, which is an unacceptable amount. We lost by three goals to Baker Park, although we were down by 7 at one point in the second half."

"This country is always capable at a run in this sport. We've won the Champions Challenge Cup before, we've won the Moravica Lacrosse Invitational, we've done everything we can in this sport besides win the WLCs. But we've got to get better against the sport's elite." And the tournaments' format will be about as unforgiving as it can be. The Casaran format, the format used when Banija won the World Baseball Classic for the first time at WBC 47, is a formula that prioritizes the best teams playing the best teams throughout the group stages. It generates money and interest- instead of early stage blowouts, Banijan fans will be treated to quality early round matchups. It is likely we'll play rivals like Baker Park and Sarzonia earlier in the tournament, and it's even possible that we'll play even our ancient rivals Abanhfleft.

Who knows though? Opponents are not determined until the previous matchday is complete. This is a team that is going to be tested, and thoroughly. Matchday 1, we have Kohnhead as our opponents. A recognized rising power in this sport, they are ranked just 21st, but are unlikely to stay that low for long. The Galactic Empire make for an intriguing opening day opponent. The Banijans will be looking for an early win to set things off right, as their goal, of course, will be to try and clinch a spot surely in the Top 12, but really try to aim for the Top 4 and get a bye to the Quarterfinals.

The Kriegiersien Lacrosse Nationalteam

consists mainly out of Xvarts, locals from the recently conquered stolen lands, that have become very proficient in the sport. A team of Xvarts from that region was able to overcome the competition from the south and win the national championship.
Out of that team and some token orc and human players as "backup" a squad was formed to compete at the World Championship.

For a nation where nudity is mandatory, clothes are always a nice surprise. Kriegiersien comes as always in their black Olympic rags.. jerseys.

Seems like there's quite a lot of sports going on at the moment. The World Cup just finished and then immediately there was a Baseball Slam, a Junior Hockey Championship, a World Bowl, and now the World Lacrosse Championships are here as well. We're on number 35 now as well. Can you believe it? Feels like decades since the first time we ever played in this competition, but actually it's only been a short while. Someone who follows a lot of sports is just spoilt for choice when it comes to which one to follow. But I'm the one following lacrosse so here I am right now.

This WLC is gonna be stranger than the last one too. This isn't gonna be your regular group stage followed by playoffs tournament; no, we're apparently going to do something called a "Casaran system" where teams are drawn against other teams of similar strength or rank, and then as the team creates a record they will get drawn against other teams with similar records to, I don't know. Weed out the weak and keep only the strong? It's a strange thing, but given that nobody else put forward a bid for this thing other than Northwest Kalactin, guess we're stuck with this format for the whole of WLC XXXV.

Our first opponent in this Casaran format is Delaclava, a nation I haven't heard of before but apparently they've been around for a long time, isolated themselves because reasons, and then now they're back in the sporting scene trying to recapture the glory they had before. Not sure how they're doing on that on other fronts, but when it comes to lacrosse, they did not get on the right foot at all. Jenelle Eure was a new face looking to make an impact in the national team seeing as she's basically the successor to Cherish Espinal (one-third of the New Fearsome Threesome alongside Pearline Cordes and Tomiko Legaspi), and for all intents and purposes it looks like she's succeeded in doing just that. I mean, four goals in just the first quarter for a total of eleven in the whole game. If that's not making yourself known on the international stage then I don't know what is.

This team, they're really wanting to prove that the bronze medal run last time around was no fluke, that they are actually legit championship contenders once again. And they do deserve to be in the running. The SLA (Samahang Lakros ng Abanhfleft) aren't messing about now. This team has been painstakingly assembled through tough and trying conditions. Things were tough for this team and country when the original Fearsome Threesome retired and left a massive hole in our team that took only a number of competitions to finally be filled again. So far though, the new ones have been holding up to the test. They've been doing very well, and to say that they would have deserved to win another championship last time around wouldn't be completely amiss. It seems strange to see a country like Abanhfleft putting all these resources supporting a sport which admittedly is not the most popular one in this country. And yet because this is the sport where we've been the most successful, this is the basket we're putting much of our eggs in. I mean, can you blame us? With four WLCs under our belt this is literally our most successful competition. And it's quite apparent that we are looking for number 5. Only a blind man who's also lost his hands, feet, and all feeling in his skin due to some freak accident could possibly not see that. And who could blame the SLA? I want championship five too. I want it bad, and I want it now. Especially after just missing out in Jeckland those couple of years ago. That's gotta be good... no, great motivation for the gals and guys to pick up our fifth trophy of the competition. And if that doesn't work to get them all gunning for the title, then what could even get them motivated at this point anyway? Just a thought.

Jordan Helms is off to a fairly strong start with the Sarzonian national lacrosse team. After all, the Stars won the AOLC and defeated rivals Banija in the process. They also beat Kohnhead 16-6 in front of 26,814 at Franz Braddock Stadium in Woodstock.

Even so, Helms didn't like what he saw from the Stars against Pripet Socialist Republic. Sure, the Stars won 13-8 and the defence clamped down, especially in the third and fourth quarters and held their opponents to just three goals in the second half, but Sarzonia only led 6-5 at halftime. The faceoff specialists lost eight of 12 draws going into the break and the Stars gave up four man-up opportunities.

"We just needed to focus more," attackman Nick Loewe said. "Do better at the X, finish our checks defensively, develop better flow on offence." Loewen helped the Stars do just that, even stepping in to take thr opening draw of the second half while the coaching staff was working with the FOGOs. He won his first draw since high school and charged into the offensive end and fired a blistering shot past the goaltender for the goal that would seize momentum for the Stars once and for all.

The victory sets up an important match against defending champions HUElavia, one that would have been circled on the calendar if not for the Casaran format of this tournament. Regardless, it's a match Helms expects his team to be ready for.

"It's the defending champions," he said. "We have to be ready."

[Sylestone]

Sylestone have lost their first game of the 35th World Lacrosse Championship, against the 12th ranked Terre Septentrionale. The final result was a poor 19-8 loss and has put them in dire straits. Their next game is against the weak Pripet Socialist Republic, of whom they should be able to beat. But as Will Lax said, “This is a world competition. Every side will be a challenge, good or bad. We have to get over what happened today and turn it around. I have confidence in you guys. We’re a good bunch. But we need to prove it. So let’s get out there and win some games!”
